For some time researchers have attempted to in- crease drilling efficiency (and therefore reduce costs) by adding certain chemical agents to the circulating medium. The effect of some organic additives on the diamond drilling of quartzite was recently investigated in the laboratory by personnel of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In these tests, the penetration rate and bit life were found to increase with the use of additives. In addition, an economic analysis of a hypothetical 1000-ft hole showed that additives can reduce drilling costs by 30%. Wetting Agents Improve Drilling Efficiency Much of the interest in the use of wetting agents to improve drilling efficiency is the result of an observation made by Rehbinder, Shreiner, and Zhigach.1 These investigators postulated that drilling creates a region of increased crack formation directly below the bit and that a circulating medium that wets the rock will also penetrate the micro- cracks of the predestruction zone. Increasing the molecular affiinity (wetting ability) of these circulating media for the surface of the rock helps the deformation and destruction by softening the rock in the zone of increased crack formation. In this manner, the hardness or strength of the rock is decreased as the medium wets the rock in the predestruction zone. This is known as the "Rehbinder effect." Rehbinder's work has prompted many investigators to examine the relationship between the use of additives and the mechanical destruction of rock. Engelmann, Terichow and Selim reported that the maximum penetration of the rock by a diamond point in a solution environment was at the isoelectric point of the mineral and solution interface.2 Improvement in rock breakage with the use of additives was observed by Frangiskos and Smith.3 Joris and McLaren suggest that additives having a lower surface tension than water will also be more efficient in cooling the diamonds.4 Additives help remove fine cuttings from the face of the bit and improve efficiency. The latter two authors also report an improvement in impregnated bit life and penetration rates with the use of soluble oil additives. All of these investigations were initiated in the hope of discovering what economic benefits will accrue with the use of additives.

ALTHOUGH many physical properties of superlat-tices have been studied intensively, relatively little attention has been paid to their mechanical properties until recently. Even for the well-known transformation in 0 brass, the effect of the transformation on plastic behavior has only lately been extensively investigated.''' A partial analysis of dislocation structure in superlattices has been given by cottrel13 and his theory agrees well with the experimental results on CU3AU.4,5 His analysis, however, is implicitly limited to low-temperature effects, since it does not include the behavior of dislocations at temperatures high enough for diffusion, and hence climb, to occur. The work of Herman and Brown2 on the creep of 0 brass indicates that important effects occur under such conditions, and consequently, the theory should be extended to include them. Such high-temperature effects cannot be observed in Cu3Au, since it disorders below the temperature at which diffusion occurs at a reasonable rate. There are materials of the same structure, however, such as Ni3A1, which retain their order up to, or close to, the melting point. GEOMETRY OF THE COMMON SUPERLATTICES The two best-known ordered structures are the 0 brass type, B2, shown in Fig. 1, and the Cu3Au type, Ll2, shown in Fig. 2. In the B2 structure the (000) and (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites are different in that they are occupied by different types of atoms. The symmetry of the structure is then lowered from a body-centered cubic, A2, in which the sites are equivalent, with atoms located randomly in the sites, to simple cubic. This lowering of symmetry has the consequence that two types of regions may occur within a crystal: regions where A atoms are in the (0, 0, 0) sites, and regions where they are in (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites. The boundary between two such regions will contain bonds between like atoms, and be a surface of higher energy. These regions are known as antiphase domains and the boundary as antiphase boundary. In the B2 structure, boundary formed during the ordering process should disappear as a result of domain growth, since any domain growing to the boundary of two others will join one and engulf the other.' In any well annealed crystal, only a single domain should exist, with antiphase boundary present only in connection with dislocations, as discussed below. The L1, structure is related to the A1 (face-centered cubic) in much the same way as the B2 is to the A2. The face-center sites are occupied by A atoms, and the corner sites by B atoms. The symmetry is again lowered to simple cubic, and antiphase domains can exist. In this case, however, there are four initially equivalent sites in the unit cell: (0,0,0), (0, 1/2, 1/2), (1/2,0, 1/2) and (1/2, 1/2, 0). In the ordered structure any one may be occupied by a B atom and the other three by A atoms. Thus four types of antiphase domains can occur in this structure. This is sufficient to permit a metastable "foam structure" to exist within a crystal.''7 Antiphase boundaries along three different planes are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.* *The presence of a layer of disordered material between antiphase domains, as suggested by Jones and Sykes8 does not seem likely. Such a layer would be a region of unnecessarily high energy which could readily be reduced by the formation of the type of boundary discussed here.__________________________________________________________ The notation (111) [110] means a boundary lying along a (111) plane between antiphase regions related by a 1/2 [I10] translation. It may be seen in Figs. 3 and 4 that an antiphase boundary usually results in incorrect nearest neighbors (shown connected by braces). The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. In addition to projects such as those reported in parts I and II above, the Section of Geo-physics of the Federal Government has undertaken a considerable amount of fundamental research. Two such field-projects may be mentioned, one a magnetometric study in the Comstock Dis-trict of Nevada, and the other a resistivity-study of snow and ice. In addition to the field-problems, there have been two classes of research of a mathematical type. One of these has been the preparation of tables, scales, and charts for the important geophysical functions already known; the other has been the extension of the relations involved in the resistivity-problem. The magnetometric study at Spring Valley, in the Comstock District, was made for the pur-pose of determining the value of the magnetometer in extending the knowledge of a region, as ob-tained by purely geological means. The variations in the vertical magnetic intensity were mea-sured with an Askania balance at intervals of 20 feet, along lines as shown in Figure I.. These lines were 100 or 500 feet apart over an area approximately a rectangle 6000 by 7500 feet. In addition to the lines shown, two areas were selected for more intensive study. In one, short

IRon-oRe deposits in the Philippine Islands became the subject of official record as early as 1664. Undoubtedly iron ore was known and recognized by the Filipinos long before the earliest Spanish records. It is even possible that the Filipino practice of smelting iron ore is, like the native copper smelting, older than the Spanish conquest of the islands. The first records have to do with the magnetite-hematite ores near the towns of Santa Inez and Bosoboso in Rizal Province, from 15 to 20 miles east of Manila. The magnetite-hematite ores of Bulacan were exploited in 1783. Similar ores near the town of Mambulao in Camarines Province yielded a number of specimens to be exhibited in Spain in 1834. With the exception, then, of the lateritic iron ores on the eastern coast of northern Surigao, the true nature of which was not recognized until 1914, the important iron-ore deposits of the Philippines had all been discovered before the islands came under the dominion of the United States. Indeed, in the Spanish documents relating to the history of iron mining are statements which, if their accuracy be not questioned, leave us in the Philippines today with much less iron ore than the Spaniards found. To quote, for example, a report submitted to the Superior Government in Spain in 1835 by one of its emissaries, Don Lorenzo Calvo: "The Philippine Islands, most excellent Sir, possess iron and exhibit it in nearly every known mineralogical combination, and in such abundance that the cordillera of the island of Luzon, from Montufar Point in San Bernardino Straits to Cape Bojeador, is composed of no other mineral than iron, its ranges, of the third order, being in content and structure totally iron of the best quality, the more valuable in that its combinations are such as to facilitate its fusion and to render its redaction to metal simple." Today, however, it is recognized that the iron-ore deposits in the Eastern Cordillera of Luzon constitute, not a continuous belt, but a series of widely separated deposits, including a half dozen orebodies within a distance of 10 miles in Bulacan Province, a single outcrop at Santa Inez, Rizal Province, farther south, and three deposits around

At the request of representatives of the Treasury Department, President Winchell appointed the following committee, which .held a two-day conference with the Treasury representatives in Washington Oil Oct. 6 and 7 to aid in deciding upon the principles of mine taxation to he adopted by the Government. The results of this conference, which is not yet concluded, will be published in a future Bulletin.

A theory is presented for the static penetration of a single rigid wedge into brittle material. The material considered is one which exhibits both crushing and chipping phases in the penetration process. If the wedge angle and three parameters are specified, the theory predicts forces and associated penetrations during both the crushing and chipping phases. For certain ranges of the parameters agreement with the limited experimental data available is promising, except for the initial phase of the penetration process where refinements on the proposed theory are required. The theory also predicts that for certain values of the wedge angle and other known parameters, the chipping process does not occur and penetration is due entirely to crushing. When viewed in detail, the drilling of rock by percussive means involves, among other things, system dynamics, actuating forces, dynamic stress levels and the actual penetration mechanism of the bit into rock. If rock drills are to be significantly improved, a thorough understanding of the entire system would be highly desirable. In this paper, one aspect of the system, namely the mechanism of penetration of the bit, will be studied in detail. It has been found1 that for the velocities encountered in percussive drilling (of the order of 20 fps) a static analysis adequately describes the penetration process, at least for some rocks. Hence, we will only be concerned with describing analytically the static penetration of a single wedge shaped tool. It will further be assumed that the wedge is long enough to permit a two-dimensional analysis. Numerous authors have studied the static penetration of a wedge into rock. The following papers give some of this work and provide additional references to other work. Cheatham2,3 has assumed the rock to behave plastically and has obtained force-penetration equations for both Coulomb-Mohr and parabolic yield criteria. Evans and Murrell4 have studied the penetration of two types of coal and have found equations relating the penetration characteristic (P/dSc) to wedge angle for the various strength coals tested. race' attempted to find a correlation between hardness as determined by indenting the material and other mechanical properties and concluded that the results of such a test are generally inconclusive. His paper however contains a very extensive bibliography on the indenting of many different materials. Gnirk6 also has a fairly complete literature review on the static penetration of rock, of which he makes use in his indexing studies. A wide range of behavior is found in the wedge penetration of different rocks under different external conditions. For example, a rock that is essentially elastic-brittle at standard pressure may become elastic-plastic at a high confining pressure.7 It has also been observed4. " that some rocks will merely be crushed and indented by a wedge, whereas others will crack and form chips, furthermore the existence or non-existence of chips depends in great measure on the geometry of the indentor, type of rock and the depth of penetration. Hence, to attempt a theory which embraces all possible behavior is not practical at present. We, therefore, confine our attention to predicting the force-penetration characteristic and volume removal behavior for a type of rock which exhibits both crushing and chipping phases in the penetration process. Such behavior is characteristic of the harder rocks such as granites and represents a more difficult problem than the behavior of softer rocks such as coal and certain sandstones. In this preliminary study an attempt will be made to describe only the essential features of this complex penetration process. A qualitative description of these essential features is obtained with the aid of Fig. 1.1, where a wedge of vertex angle 28 is shown at some intermediate stage of the penetration process. As the wedge advances, the rock is fragmented (i.e. crushed) in some local region surrounding the wedge, the shape of this region being unknown. Simultaneous with the fragmentation in this local region, essentially elastic stresses are assumed to be building up in the surrounding rock. When a certain penetration level, di+1, is reached, the stresses along some surface are sufficient to cause failure and a chip is thus formed. The process now repeats, i.e., a crushing phase followed by the formation of a chip.

THE extension of metallurgical control of steelmaking processes has always made it desirable to have some quick method for determining the oxygen content of molten steel. To meet the practical demands of the steel industry, this method must also be simple enough so that the sampling can be done by the regular furnace crew. This requirement was kept in mind continually in the work to be described. An oxygen value is required for proper control, whether it be of a rimming steel or of a fully killed steel. However, two factors have discouraged the development of such direct methods: I. The reaction C + FeO -+ Fe + CO is rapid enough to make the correct sampling of the bath a difficult problem. The most generally accepted means of circumventing this difficulty have been the aluminum-killed bomb test of McCutcheon and Rautio1 and the aluminum-killed spoon test of Herty.2 The theory of these tests is that all of the oxygen in the iron is converted to A1203, which can then be determined by chemical methods. Even when simplified so that the analysis is made by a measurement of turbidity, this method is too slow to be used in routine control. Furthermore, the results obtained have never been entirely satisfactory, and some of the reasons for this will be discussed later in this paper. 2. The ordinary chemical methods of analysis for oxygen in steel are not reliable. The only analysis that seems to possess sufficient dependability to be of value is vacuum fusion,3 and the apparatus and technique developed for this have been too complex and slow for routine work. INDIRECT METHODS Indirect methods of estimating the oxygen have been resorted to in mill practice. Generally these depend upon the chemical equilibria involved. The oxygen in the bath is related to other components in the slag or metal that can be analyzed more readily. These methods have many difficulties in common. Steelmaking processes involve a complicated set of interrelated reactions, all of which tend to approach equilibrium at varying rates. The degree to which any particular equilibrium is approached, is not , well established. Moreover, a proper use of theoretical equilibrium constants requires a more extensive knowledge of the activities of the reactants than we now have. This is well illustrated by the irregularities observed when trying to determine the oxygen in the metal by its ratio to the iron oxide in the slag. Equilibrium relations may be used more readily if they are evaluated by plant experience, but the extent of approach to equilibrium remains an undetermined variable and lack of an entirely satisfactory means of determining oxygen for the calibration is felt keenly. For example, the statistical analysis of the relation between carbon and oxygen4 5 illustrates that even in a single plant wide variations exist under normal conditions of operation. Recent research work has shown that coal can be produced, at reasonable cost, from almost all coal-mining districts containing not more than 3 to 8 per cent. of ash. From coal so produced, an abundant supply of coke, suitable for blast-furnace operation, can be made containing from 12 down to 6 per cent. or less of ash. These statements apply broadly to the Appalachian coal belt, including most of the mining districts in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. The exceptions will generally be found among those coals carrying a prohibitive percentage of sulfur. Any gravimetric heavy fluid method of separation will effect a reduction in the percentage of sulfur, but this reduction may not be sufficient to produce, from coal unfit for metallurgic use, a product that can be so used. When a large part of the sulfur is in the form known as "organic sulfur, "or is present as very finely disseminated and homogeneously distributed pyrite, possibly it cannot be eliminated from the low-ash coal produced. When the sulfur exists as pyrite in distinct layers, bands, or nodules, or when it is finely disseminated but is irregularly distributed, often a low-ash coal low enough in sulfur to make good metallurgic coke can be produced from relatively impure coals. It has generally been assumed that the quality of coke on which blast furnaces must be operated depends on the geographic location of the furnace, and that the grade of coke on which a blast furnace must operate is that produced from the best coal obtainable by careful mining; or if the coal is prepared by washing, hand picking, or other means by which the foreign impurities are removed, that the grade of coke on which the furnace must operate depends on what has been termed the "inherent ash" of the particular coal. The term "inherent ash " is generally understood to mean the percentage of ash present after all removable (free) impurities, slate, fireclay, high-ash bony coal, and pyrite have been removed, and is usually applied to the percentage of ash present in run-of-mine coal from any mine after these impurities have been removed. Perfect washing, or perfect preparation, is understood to be attained when the percentage of ash in the washed coal is reduced to the percentage of inherent ash; that is, of ash that cannot be removed by the washing processes in common use. A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions. It is based on the dead oil viscosity and the solution GOR. The correlation was developed from a study which showed that at a fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the correrponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates. Data from 457 crude oil samples from the major producing areas of the U. S., Canada and South America were used. The best straight lines through the data were fitted by the method of least squares with a digital computer. The correlation is presented in the form of an equation and also in a convenient gra-phical form. INTRODUCTION The viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions is an important physical property used in reservoir engineering calculations. Many difficulties are inherent in the sampling of gas-saturated oils and in the laboratory measurement of their viscosities. Therefore, it is frequently neither possible nor convenient to obtain measured values, so the viscosity must be estimated from other, more readily available data. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils. The correlation is based on the amount of gas in solution and the viscosity of the dead oil at the temperature of interest. A previous correlation of these variables was presented by Beal. In comparison, the correlation presented here extends to a higher GOR and to a lower dead oil viscosity. Over the range of variables covered by both, this correlation is based on approximately 11 times as many oil samples. DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION A study was made of the variables or parameters which could be used to relate the viscosity of a gas-saturated oil to its dead oil viscosity. Preference was given to those variables which are easily and commonly measured in the field or in the laboratory. It was found that either the differential liquid formation volume factor or the solution GOR of the gas-saturated oil could be used as a correlating parameter. The solution GOR was se- lected for the correlation because of its simplicity and availability. In an attempt to refine the correlation by introducing a second parameter, the following additional variables were tested: differential liquid formation volume factor at the reservoir bubble point, the formation volume factor at the saturation pressure for the GOR of interest, reservoir temperature, viscosity of C+ fraction at 100°F and atmospheric pressure, weighted average gravity of gas in solution, oil gravity, reservoir bubble point pressure, saturation pressure at the selected GOR and reservoir temperature, and gas mol fraction. None of these improved the correlation to any significant extent. It was found that at any fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the corresponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates, for the range of variables investigated. This straight-line relationship was used for the correlation. Viscosity data on a total of 457 crude oil samples were used. The data were obtained with rolling ball-type viscometers. The samples came from all of the important producing areas of the U. S., as well as from Canada and South America. Their geographical distribution is shown in Table 1. MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory state of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which are useful for predicting machine performance and give, acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary in commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed' in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted. In its first form, as stated by P. R. Rittinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include .the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin2 as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended. According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps, 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported' that support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in. different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work" done on. the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is relatively harder to grind at the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory' is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-1.5 If a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The'evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of 200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of -200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. This paper is concerned primarily with the development, proof, and application of a new Third Theory, which should eliminate the objections to the two old theories and serve as a practical unifying principle for comminution in all size ranges. Both of the old theories have been remarkably barren of practical results when applied to actual crushing and grinding installations. The need for a new satisfactory theory is more acute than those not directly concerned, with crushing and grinding calculations can realize. Many problems associated with potential hazards in a proposed mining area may not be adequately appraised because of the complexity of trying to evaluate them in terms of production requirements. Frequently, encountered hazards have to be dealt with by day-to-day operational schemes that require the miner to either force a way through them or avoid them by blocking off the area in which the hazards are known to exist. These considerations, after the mine is in full production, can be costly to the mine operator and can increase the danger to the miners. A hazard-evasion computer program for mine planning that will appraise proposed mine layouts on the basis of existing or potential hazards has therefore been developed. The program is intended for use during the planning phase of a mine, where it should assist the mining engineer in making decisions in mine design, With the output from this program, the mining engineer should be able either to corroborate his judgments made on the basis of mining experience or to find unanticipated solutions to design problems. The program tests hundreds of possible solutions to a mining layout, and by sorting out the 10 best (based on a criteria of minimum-abandoned-coal) limits the number of choices that need to be considered and appraised for applicability to a given mine scheme.

The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. The DIAGRAM computer program has been used to develop stability diagrams such as Eh-pH, log [CNI-pH, and log [Me]-pH for the systems Me-CN-H 0 where Me = Au, Ag, Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co. More complex 2 diagrams involving sulfur- and arsenic-containing species are also presented. With the aid of these diagrams, a discussion is presented of the solution conditions (e.g. pH, [CN], [CNS], Eh) vhich influence gold and silver extraction in cyanide solutions. Special emphasis is given to the effects of ore minerals or calcination products, such as pyrrhotite, pyrite, arsenopyrite and hematite on gold-silver dissolution. Application of the stability diagrams to solution treatment operations such as cementation is also indicated.

The use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material must be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, granulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, but to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits. Methods of Placing Sand Sand may be transported and placed underground by several methods, which may be classified as follows: 1. By Hand.—The sand, which must be comparatively dry, is taken down the shaft in cars on cages and is distributed to its destination in these cars, or it is dumped down raises and is drawn off and distributed by means of cars, wheelbarrows or scrapers.
