The conditioning of semifinished steel products such as billets, blooms, and slabs to remove surface defects before further processing to finished products is a necessary accompaniment to steel mill rolling operations. A knowledge of the kinds of defects which occur and of the conditions in melting, teeming, and rolling that may lead to their occurrence is favorable to the production of quality products. Surface defects may be classed as either of mechanical origin such as those that occur in the heating and rolling operations and include breaks, tears, guide marks, mechanical laps and the like, or they may have been in the ingot before heating and rolling. Examples of the latter are ingot cracks, blow-holes, scabs, and inclusions which lead to the numerous known types of seams and surface flaws. Most of the common types of surface defects and methods for their identification by visual examination or by the aid of macro-etch tests are well known. The conditions which caused their formation are also appreciably understood and this knowledge has been instrumental in the establishment of methods for metallurgical control. There are, however, defects of doubtful origin. In any endeavor to trace the causes for their occurrence, the question of first concern is: I. Whether they were formed in the rolling procedure. 2. Whether they existed in the ingot prior to rolling. In the case of semifinished products which are rerolled to finished products there is also the question of whether they were formed in the primary or in the secondary rolling. In metallurgical laboratories where numerous or routine examinations of the quality of rolled products are made over the course of time, there will doubtless be many puzzling cases of defect origin. Microscopic examination of the defects may, however, reveal a characterizing condition that can be used to classify them broadly with respect to their origin. Such a condition has been observed and, after detailed investigation, is described here with the thought that it may offer a usable and relatively simple solution to a bothersome problem. Basis For Classifying In this discussion the term "mechanical type defects" will be used to designate those that have occurred as a result of the rolling operations such as in rolling from the ingot to billets, blooms, or slabs or in rerolling to finished products. The term "steel type defects" will be used to designate those that were present in the ingot prior to primary rolling or that were in the semifinished product prior to secondary rolling to finished product. THE PROBLEM MANY hardened steels contain significant quantities of retained austenite even in cases where the carbon and alloy contents are low. In fact austenite has been detected in plain carbon steels containing as little as 0.50 pct carbon.1 Although the austenite may not be visible metallographically it causes definite dilatometric and magnetic effects during subsequent tempering or subatmospheric cooling.1,2,3 Therefore if the reactions which hardened steels undergo during later treatment are to be understood in quantitative fashion it is most essential to have some kind of absolute analysis for the austenite content in hardened steels. Once this analysis has been made, the austenite transformations can be followed precisely by observing such sensitive phenomena as changes in length or in magnetization but the latter techniques can only determine differences in the amount of retained austenite and usually an independent method must be found to put these differences on an absolute basis. In certain instances the microscope can be used advantageously to determine the percentage of retained austenite. The quenched sample is tempered to "darken" the martensite with minimum decomposition of the coexisting austenite, and then is polished and etched in the usual fashion. If the austenite is clearly distinguishable from the tempered martensite and other possible constituents its volume percentage can be measured quantitatively by point counting or lineal analysis.4 Such microscopic methods, however, depend on the etch being sufficiently discriminatory. In fairly coarse structures, if the austenite content is greater than 10-15 pct, there is probably little smearing of the etch, and point counting or lineal analysis seems to be quite accurate. On the other hand if the structure is difficult to resolve, as in commercially treated fine-grained steels which contain less than 10-15 pct retained austenite, the latter may be completely obliterated by the dark etching martensite or it may appear disproportionately low as the interfaces between the two constituents become difficult to distinguish. Another disadvantage of the metallographic method is the need for "darkening" the martensite and hence the determination cannot be applied to as-hardened steels. The required tempering may spoil the structure for other tests or may even remove a small part of the austenite which is being sought. X ray methods hold more promise for covering the range under 15 pct retained austenite. Although austenite and martensite in the hardened steel may be chemically identical, their crystal structures and lattice parameters differ, and the intensity of an austenite diffraction line is some continuous function of the percentage of re-

A new method of reservoir evaluation called pulse-testins has been developed for describing formation properties between wells. Pulse-testing utilizes a sensitive differential-pressure gauge at a responding well to measure and record the response generated by a series of flow rate changes (pulses) at an adjacent or pulsing well. Since the pulse-test instruments have a sensitivity of about 0.001 psi, pulses of several hours or less in duration will generate a measurable response in most reservoirs. For this reason, many well pairs can be tested in a short period of time with little interference in field operations. Comparison of pulse-test results to conventional testing methods shows that the pulses obey unsteady-state, compressible-flow theory and thus provide a measure of both transmissibility (kh/µ) and storage (Fch). In additian, the method can be used qualitatively to describe communication across faults and between zones, and direction and tnagnitude of fracture trends. INTRODUCTION To obtain maximum usefulness of new reservoir analysis methods as well as to aid the field engineer in understanding local reservoir anomalies, improved methods are needed to describe heterogeneities in specific reservoirs. Optimum well spacing, equipment specifications, well completion design and especially the economics of pressure maintenance and secondary recovery programs depend on the extent and location of the heterogeneities that affect flow behavior in the field. One method for obtaining a measure of areal reservoir heterogeneity is an interference test. In the simplest interference test. constant-rate production or injection is initiated at one well and the effect of this flow is measured as pressure vs time at another well. Thus, during interference tests the flow characteristics of the formation are determined in situ. Despite their obvious usefulness in reservoir delineation. interference tests have not enjoyed frequent usage. Reasons for this have been the weeks or months required in many fields to obtain a pressure response measurable with conventional gauges, and the interruption of routine field operation during the field-wide shut-in normally required during these long times. Also, only average properties of the relatively large volume of the reservoir disturbed during these long times can normally be obtained — variations in properties between individual wells cannot be delineated. To eliminate these drawbacks of conventional tests, a special reservoir description technique called pulse testing' has been developed. Pulse-testing has several advantages that make it more convenient and practical for field use than interference tests. Valid tests are more certain because use of a series of flow disturbances gives rise to a diagnostic pressure response that can more readily be distinguished from unknown trends in reservoir pressure and other "noise." The time required is only a fraction of that for an interference test because a special, high-sensitivity differential pressure gauge can detect a much smaller pressure change. Variations in properties between individual wells can be delineated because of the relatively small volume of the reservoir disturbed during these short times. Finally, wells other than the pulsing and responding wells do not have to be shut in or carefully regulated.

BEFORE an audience which included many notable members of the engineering profession, the John Fritz Medal was presented to Senator Guglielmo Marconi on July 6, 1922, in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, in New York. The medal was awarded for achievements in the development of wireless telegraphy, but all of the speakers emphasized the inventor's service to mankind, in saving life at sea, especially, as well as his remarkable scientific attainments. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE JOHN FRITZ MEDAL The John Fritz Medal is presented from time to time for notable achievements in applied science, as a memorial to the engineer and metallurgist whose name it bears, one of the charter members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The medal fund, contributed by friends of Mr. Fritz, is administered by representatives of the four national engineering societies. Seventeen awards have been made to men of eminent distinction in the various branches of the profession of engineering, whose names are more familiar to the civilized world than are the names of most of the presidents of the United States. Four of the medallists were present on the evening of July 6: Dr. Elihu Thomson, the dean of the electrical engineers, General Goethals, Orville Wright, and J: Waldo Smith, who developed the New York City water supply, system. In opening the meeting, Dr. Comfort A. Adams, president of the Board of Award, said in part: The profession of engineering knows no national boundaries. That the engineers of this country sense this fact deeply is evi-denced by the absence of any limitations as to nationality in the award of the John Fritz Medal. The engineer is seeking for the truth wherever it may be found, and it frequently happens that the most helpful sugges-tions for the solution of a particular problem are the results of the work of men of other nationalities on the other side of the world, whom we have never seen. Thus through this long range interchange of information and of ideas, there has grown up a feeling of real kinship among the engineers of the civilized world, a sense of interdependence and of the need and value of cooperation, in wide contrast with the all too prevalent sense of conflicting interests, of racial and national antagonisms of bitterness and misunderstanding. We often think of the nations of the earth as separated by walls or barriers, of various kinds and of various heights. Some of these are the natural results of evolution, for example, differences of language, customs and traditions; while others are more artificial, being maintained by law and dictated by fear, greed, and shortsightedness or ignorance. There is deep conviction that the degree in which we can abolish these barriers is a true measure of our progress towards real civilization, and that the destruction of these barriers is the only method of attaining that world-wide peace for which every

An apparatus and a procedure for determining the viscosity behavior of hydrocarbons at pressures up to 10,000 psia and temperatures between 77 and 400° F are described. The equipment is suitable for measuring viscosity of either the liquid or vapor phases or the fluid above the two-phase envelope for systems exhihiting retrograde phenomena, according no the phase state of the system within these ranges of temperature and pressure. Equations are developed for calculation of viscosity from the experimental measurements, and new data for the viscosities of ethane and propane at 77° F are reported. INTRODUCTION With the advent of higher pressures and temperatures in industrial processes and deep petroleum and natural gas reservoirs, demand has increased for accurate values of physical properties of hydrocarbons under these conditions. Proportionately, more frequent occurrence of natural gas and condensate-type fluids is encountered as fluid hydrocarbons are discovered at greater depths. This increases the importance, to the reservoir engineer, of being able to predict accurately the physical properties of light hydrocarbon systems in the dense-gas and light-liquid phase states. Reliable gas viscosity data are limited primarily to measurements made on pure components near ambient temperature and at low pressures. Few investigations have been reported for high pressures, and except for methane, data on light hydrocarbons are subject to question. This is demonstrated by the large discrepancy between sets of data on the same component reported by different investigators. For mixtures in the dense gas and light liquid regions and for fluids exhibiting retrograde behavior there are very few published experimental data. Viscosity data for methane have been reported by Bicher and Katz,1 Sage and Lacey,12 Comings, et al,3 Golubev,3 and Carr,3 with good agreement among the last three sets of data. Comings, Golubev and Carr utilized capillary tube instruments for which the theory of fluid flow is well established. The theory permits calculation of the viscosity directly from the experi- mental data and dimensions of the instrument alone. Sage and Lacey, and Bicher and Katz used rolling-ball viscometers. The theory of the rolling-ball viscometer has not been completely established, and these instruments presently require calibration by use of fluids of known viscosity behavior before viscosities of test fluids can be measured. To obtain accurate data it is necessary that the rolling-ball viscometers be calibrated by use of fluids of density and viscosity similar to the test fluids, a difficult selection for the gas phase. From the methane data and experimental tests on various natural gases, Carr developed a correlation for predicting the PVT behavior of light natural gases.2,3,4 This correlation was based on data for a very limited composition range; its application to rich gases and condensate fluids is questionable. The object of this investigation is to develop an instrument which can be used to obtain viscosity data at reservoir temperatures and pressures, for rich gases, condensate-type systems above the two-phase envelope and light liquid mixtures. These data will be used in an effort to develop correlations to represent the viscosity behavior of these fluids. APPARATUS In a previous viscosity study Carr2 utilized a modified Rankine capillary viscometer configuration," Fig. 1. In this instrument the gas to be tested is forced through the capillary tube in laminar flow by motion of a mercury pellet in the fall tube, the measured displacement time being that required for the mercury slug to move between the brass timer rings. The viscometer is constructed of glass and mounted in a steel pressure vessel. The test gas pressure in the viscometer is balanced by an inert gas (usually nitrogen) in the vessel. Excellent results have been obtained with instruments of this type, with Carr2 and Comings5 reporting repro-ducibilities of 99.5 to 99.3 per cent and an estimated absolute accuracy of 99 per cent. However, these instruments have limitations which have precluded their use for liquids. The need for maintaining a balance between pressures of the test fluid and inert gas in the viscometer vessel presents operating problems, and requires charging the test fluid to the viscometer very slowly. The principle drawback to the Rankine unit is behavior of the mercury slug which provides the pressure differential across the capillary. Steam-injection tests in the field have shoum that heat transport into the oil/water region, ahead of the steam zone, may have a significant effect on the production process. Earlier theoretical work on reservoir heating by hot-fluid injection can be used to describe the growth of the steam zone, but only if heat transport from steam zone into oil/water region is neglected. It therefore became necessary to re-examine and extend the earlier theory. It was found that this theory ceases to be consistent with the physical model of the process at a certain critical time, tc, which depends on reservoir thickness, temperature, and quality of the steam. The critical time marks an important change in the heat flow across the condensation frovt: the heat flow, which is purely conductive during 0 < t < tc&apos; becomes predominantly convective at t = tc. Accordingly, at t = tc, the equation which governs expansion of the steam zone changes. On the basis of the new equation, an approximate description for the steam-zone growth during t > tc is developed by making use of upper and lower bounds for the exact solution of the problem. The boundary conditions for heat and mass flow inside the oil/water region are established, and a simple method of detennining the saturation at the downstream side of the condensation front is presented. Experimental results show that the theory gives an accurate description of steam-zone expansion before the critical time. At times near critical time, and also after critical time, experimental data show theoretical steam-zone volumes to be high. Even so, the accuracy of the calculated steam-zone volumes is sufficient for practical purposes. THEORY OF STEAM-ZONE GROWTH INTRODUCTION The engineering evaluation of steam-drive processes is based mainly on a mathematical description of reservoir heating by hot fluid injection presented several years ago by Marx and Langenheim.l This theory can be used to determine the growth of the steam zone,2 provided the flow of heat from the steam zone into the liquid zone ahead of the condensation front (Fig. 1) is neglected. Since we must expect, however, that heat transport into and inside the liquid region (the region between condensation front and production wells) will affect both the water/oil flow and the growth of the steam zone, it is necessary to re-examine and to generalize the Marx and Langenheim theory as applied to steam drive, which will hereafter be termed the "old" theory. Observations made in several field tests emphasize the need to study the heat flow across the condensation front (CF). On several occasions it was discovered that heat was transported in the liquid zone far ahead of the advancing CF, resulting in an early breakthrough of warm water. The administration of industrial organization today embraces more than the cost of production and selling prices. Competition is deeper seated than mechanical devices, overhead charges, and a shrewd manipulation of the markets. Despite the " down-to-the-minute " equipment and the "last word in organization," it is quite evident that "capacity production" will be an unknown quantity until the workman is considered as a producer, in relation to his home, as he is now considered in relation to industry. Whether or not a man shall do an honest day&apos;s work is as much a psychological condition as it is a matter of physical strength or skill. His attitude toward his work each morning is determined, to a large degree, by the environment of his home. Whether this attitude, good or bad, obtains the day through will depend entirely upon the one fact as to whether the corporation which employs him does or does not differentiate between the mechanical factor and the human factor in industry. To be more specific, sociological work, under whatever name, should be of such a character as to influence the life of a workman in such a manner as to establish a cooperative interest in his work, foster within him a spirit of contentment in his home, lead him so to employ his leisure time that he will not lower his efficiency as a workman, destroy his domestic happiness, or endanger his standing in the community as a citizen. While no fixed rules of procedure can well be formulated for the development of the work, yet definite lines of activities will readily present themselves as applicable to the individual needs of a community. This is especially true where community influences and agencies pertaining to general welfare are easily correlated. Any definite work attempted must be determined by the type of the

Earnings of engineers in the period 1956 to 1958 continued the upward trend observed in the previous survey interval, 1953 to 1956. The overall median (all graduates) was $6500 in 1953, $7750 in 1956 (a 19 pct upstep or about 6.5 pct annually), and $8750 in 1958 (up 13 pct from 1956 or 6.5 pct average yearly). The latter represents an increase from mid-1956 to mid-1958. For this same two-year span the Consumer Price Index rose 1.5 pct and the Average Gross Weekly Earnings for Production (Manufacturing) climbed close to 10 pct. Median earnings for the major classifications studied are presented in Table I. The increase in engineering earnings are not distributed equally among the various activity classifications or among the experience levels of the survey. Summary results of the changes of the median lines for the major divisions are presented in Table 11. Data in this table are approximations- dollars are rounded to the nearest $50 unit and percentages to the nearest full percentage.

With the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator&apos;s problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement. Major Facts Concerning Behavior of Clays In the study of clays, as in that of most other colloidal materials, it has been impossible to make progress by the study of isolated facts. On the other hand, analysis of large groups of facts, many of which seem at first completely unrelated, can lead to a deeper insight into the structure of clays and the mechanism of their behavior. It will be well to list the major facts on which the analysis here presented is based, starting with those that have emerged repeatedly from past investigations and which thereby constitute an impregnable foundation upon which must rest any comprehensive theory of clay behavior: 1. Clays consist of hydrated aluminosilicates of extremely fine and variable particle size. 2. Suspended in water, clays exhibit variable degrees of swelling, depending upon their origin and upon the chemical and colloidal nature of any other substances present. The magnitude of the swelling is a direct indication of the extent to which the clay has become dispersed.

Quantification in recording geologic phenomena and application of well-known geologic principles to engineering works continued at an increasing rate during the year. Highway departments, water resources agencies, private firms and governmental agencies involved in tunnel excavations, dam site locations and construction, consultants and government experts in subsurface liquid-waste disposal, designers of underground storage facilities and city and regional planners all confirmed greater use of applied geology in their planning and implementation of plans. Applications of quantified geologic data to highway locations, slope control of cuts, raw material sources, water sources and water run- off showed a striking increase in number. Environmental geology and geologic hazards became part of the jargon of the geologic profession, and the American public began to realize more fully the significance of where they live, and on what and near what geologic phenomena which might effect their well-being. Tunnel work for water projects of almost dream-like magnitude kept geologic engineers busily engaged in predicting and testing local geologic conditions for construction projects. Disposal of industrial and radioactive liquid wastes continued as problems, but use of stratigraphic data, fluid flow rates and direction of flow helped solve some critical waste disposal problems. Unusual applications of seismic networks, remote sensing methods and X-ray techniques in geological engineering applications added other tools to this increasingly important profession.

THE opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was redeposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May,6 in a discussion of Abrams&apos; paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to alpha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,8 in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed during the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (As203),

RAPIDLY rising world demand for mineral products has accelerated depletion of the more readily accessible ores, particularly those of premium grade. Operations must proceed at a faster rate to deeper horizons, where there are problems of ground control that restrict economic recovery of the mineral and introduce new hazards to mine personnel. For some of the new Canadian mining fields severe problems of ground stress are still in the future, but much of Canada&apos;s mineral output comes from well established mines that have reached considerable depths. It must also be anticipated that the depletion of premium grade ores will eventually necessitate mining low grade material at competitive cost, and unsolved problems of ground control can materially increase costs. Studies of ground stress phenomena in underground workings are therefore considered a present-day necessity, especially since these investigations must be a long-term effort owing to the highly complex nature of the problem and the difficulty of making full-scale observations. In recent years the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys in Canada has conducted such an investigation. This report of the work is primarily concerned with stress problems in some Canadian coal mines and, in particular, with mine bumps. Mines Branch investigations of this and related problems are carried out by a small team of mining engineers and physicists who, with assistance from geologists, pool their special skills in an integrated program. These Canadian investigations combine a field and laboratory approach. Since data obtained under contrasting mining conditions allow useful comparisons of ground behavior under stress, this article will present data gathered under a wide range of Canadian coal mining conditions. Two contrasting longwalls in eastern Canada will be discussed and two dissimilar pillar extraction operations in western Canada. Locale of Observations In eastern Canada observations are being made in the collieries at Springhill, Nova Scotia. The district&apos;s No. 2 mine, which has a history of bump occurrences dating back to 1917, is currently being worked at a depth of 4200 ft. The mining method is longwall retreating along the strike and the practice is to retreat three walls in line, each about 350 ft long. There is no machine cutting or shooting—the coal is hand-picked and hand-loaded onto face conveyors. There are three rows of hardwood chock block supports parallel to the coal face. These supports are built during the two daily coal loading shifts, and the rear line is withdrawn during the midnight shift. The goaves are partially packed by stone midwalls 12 ft wide which are built forward daily in step with the face advance. The seam dips at 15° and averages 9 ft of strong, well cleated bituminous coal enclosed in competent beds of shales, sandy shales, and sandstones of Carboniferous age. The bumps rarely disturb the retreating longwall faces but manifest themselves as violent upthrusts of pavement in the levels leading to the walls. THE purpose of this paper is to describe, in a general way, gold-dredg-ing operations in California, with particular reference to unusual features, including types of deposits and recent attempts to improve the recovery of the gold. DREDGING AREAS The gold-bearing formations that traversed the western slope of the Sierra Nevadas for a north and south distance of some 300 miles furnished the immediate source of the gold found in most of the placer deposits of California.. Erosion through a long period carried the gold, together with various forms of partly disintegrated material, to lower elevations and formed placer deposits. Through the classifying action of water in motion, the coarser gold and heavier material of various kinds were deposited relatively near the source; consequently, in&apos; the higher moun-tain country, old river channels were worked feverishly during the early California gold-rush days because of their high gold content. With the working out of these known high-grade channels, and from the knowledge thus obtained of prehistoric stream beds, drift mining was started and flourished until about 1890. Even today many drift mines are operating with the objective of opening other old Tertiary river channels that have been covered by volcanic flows.

THE critical shortage of asbestos fiber in the world today brings to the foreground the question of locating and developing new deposits. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the more important factors which should be considered in the examination and valuation of a new asbestos enterprise. Some of the more important uses of asbestos fiber are for textiles, heat insulators, building materials, filters and a series of other uses. The properties of this mineral, such as fibrous structure, color, strength, silkiness and flexibility, coupled with resistance to fire, certain chemical action and decay make its application unique for certain industrial uses which consume over 500,000 tons annually. These same unique properties which make this mineral so valuable also make a deposit one of the most difficult to appraise accurately, because of the many undeterminable and varying factors which must be considered before a deposit can properly be termed commercial. The majority of the asbestos fiber today, having the above mentioned properties, is sold by grades which are based on fiber length. Present day fiber prices vary over a wide range from $800 to $225 for crude fibers and $300 to $20.00 per ton for milled grades. For valuation purposes a careful study should be made of existing fiber prices and markets. EXAMINATION OF DEPOSITS In carrying out prospecting and examination of a deposit, considerable caution is required to get the necessary information in the form that will have the most value for the final determination. There are two main classes of asbestos fibers, chrysotile and the amphiboles, the chrysotile being, by far, the most important both in abundance and uses. This paper will stress mainly chrysotile deposits, however, the amphiboles have many important uses, especially amosite and crocidalite. Their valuation presents special problems as other factors may be involved, especially as they are not graded according to any well defined and adopted standard but usually according to the use for which they are being supplied. Most chrysotile deposits occur in two main types of rock, (I) mainly in basic igneous, such as dunite and peridotite, (2) to a lesser extent in sedimentary rocks, such as dolomite and limestone. All of these require a certain degree of metamorphism to be favorable to asbestos formation. Approximately 90 pct of the asbestos deposits are derived from serpentinization of dunite or peridotite, whereby the magnesiumsilicate olivine was altered to hydrous magnesium-silicate serpentine. Under certain favorable geological conditions, this serpentine takes a fibrous form having a definite crystal structure, probably due to molecular rearrangement, and is known as chrysotile. THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher

The pressure and composition of the solid solution of nitrogen in chromium has been investigated as a function of temperature. The partial molal heat of solution, the activity of nitrogen in solid solution, and the partial molal free energy have been computed. The enthalpy of three reactions is summarized: N + 2Cr(3) = Cr2N(4), H° = —28,500 cal per mol 1/2N2(p) + 2Cr(8) = Cr2N(3)1 ?HO = —23,500 cal per mol 1/2N2(p) = N, ?H° = 5,000 cal per mol. WORKERS who have investigated the problem of the preparation of ductile chromium have been concerned with the effects of minor amounts of impurities upon this refractory metal. In particular, gaseous impurities such as oxygen and nitrogen have been suspected of causing trouble because of many known cases where brittleness in transition elements has been definitely traced to these elements. In order to evaluate the possible effects of the nitrogen impurity in chromium, it appeared desirable to learn something of the dependence of the nitrogen solubility upon temperature and pressure. Previous Work Maier3 in 1942 in his treatise on sponge chromium reviewed the thermodynamics of the chromium nitrides Cr2N and CrN, both of which are well-estab- lished compounds, but which apparently have not been studied in much detail. Maier presented some free energy-temperature expressions for the reactions 2 Cr,N = 4 Cr + N2 [1] and 4 CrN = 2Cr2N + N2 PI based mainly on the work of Satoh2 and Sano." Pearson and Ende3 in 1953 briefly reviewed the thermodynamics of Cr-N using the same data available to Maier, and also derived a free energy-temperature expression for reaction 1. Of the two nitrides mentioned previously, the present investigation was only concerned with Cr,N, since this nitride is in equilibrium with the metal phase, at least over most of the temperature range, Blix4 in 1929 established the structure of Cr2N (close-packed-hexagonal) by X-ray diffraction methods, and indicated that its homogeneity limits extend from 11.2 pet to 15.1 wt pet N.
