THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world's mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because, not more than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

Sulfide mineral flotation has been applied to all naturally occurring sulfides and several synthetics. Of even more importance is the fact that economic separations are now being made between sulfides of essentially all the different metals. The variety of methods and minerals involved in such practice make it difficult to characterize them except in terms of general factors which influence the practices used. Ore grade and mineral composition are the major factors determining the processing method and the extent to which processing must be carried to achieve optimum economic return for a given ore. Since the choice of treatment is also affected by such factors as mine location, shipping charges, smelter schedules, each ore is a separate problem even though mineralization may be similar; The dissemination of minerals in the ore naturally determines the fineness of grind required for liberation. However, since grinding costs are a major part of most milling costs, emphasis has been placed on means of rejecting gangue minerals at the coarsest size possible. This has led to increased flotation of middling products or bulk concentrates for subsequent regrind and retreatment. Reagent development has also played an important part in present plant practice. Relatively few new frothers and collectors have found application during the past 25 years and many have disappeared. In general practice, re- agent combination choice is now fairly consistent with the type of collector being chosen on the basis of the mineral to be floated, the frother on the basis of pulp alkalinity, and the modifiers primarily on the basis of minerals to be rejected. REPRESENTATIVE FLOTATION PLANTS The milling operations described in this chapter have been selected primarily to illustrate these differences in ores and processing methods for the major types of ore minerals. The compositions of these minerals are shown in Table 1. These concentrators were chosen as representatives, both on the basis of geographic location and mineral content of the ore treated. At least one mill is included from each of the major producers, but the primary object was to show the practice employed for the various ore minerals and the different approaches to the middling problems encountered. The individual plants which have contributed data to this study are listed in Table 2, with a summary of their operating data, and are discussed in the order shown.

A new process for leaching oxidized copper ore (CuO) is presented. Its principle advantage is that it requires low cost raw materials. For large operations the only materials used are sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3). In those operations of medium size, sulfur, which is abundant in the North of Chile, is used. However the process may also be applied to small copper plants provided low cost sulfuric acid is available as a substitute for sulfur. That is, it may be applied to those small capacity plants where large additional installations for the regeneration of the leaching solution are not needed. The method is comprised of six stages, namely: Crushing, Leaching, Washing of the Solution, Precipitation, Regeneration of the Leaching Solution, and Fusion. A flow diagram for this process in a large or medium-sized plant is given. LEACHING This process requires hydrochloric acid as the leaching solution for treating copper ores. This is easily produced from sulfuric acid and sodium chloride as follows: A small excess of NaCl is advisable to avoid the presence of free sulfuric acid. The experiments reported here were performed with 36 grams of HC1 per liter of solution to obtain a free acidity equivalent to 50 gpl of H2SO4 (the usual leaching solution concentration). Hydrochloric acid leaching may be done by either of the usual methods; i.e. percolation or agitation. The method selected depends on the characteristics of the ore. No matter which method is chosen, low pressure air can be used either as an air lift for circulation of the solution, or for agitation of the pulp with "Pachuca" tanks. In either case, there are no problems with respect to oxidation. Leaching by agitation produces good recovery; but at times, the problem of high consumption of leaching solution or the overproduction of grinding slimes which interfere with contact between phases negates this advantage. The percolation method was used in this study. Percolation took place in four 15-liter containers, 11 1/2 in. diam. by 12 in. height, having hemispheric bottoms. Each container was fitted with a wooden bottom having 1/4 in- holes. The air lift was a 3/4 in. plastic tube 10 in. high. Air at 6 psi was supplied from a rotating laboratory compressor. 10 kg of ore were charged to the container and counter-current leaching was used. The leaching solutions were fed through the center pipe in order to use the ascending solutions to reject the air in the charge. The solution circulated through the air lift in order to facilitate the movement according to the increase in density produced by the reaction between the phases present. Specific observations made in this report cannot be generalized because the leaching characteristics are dependent on the nature of the ore used, the method of leaching, and the production of primary or secondary slimes while crushing or leaching.

In spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which complicate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modification does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions. Review Although only a comparatively few investigations have so far been made on the pure system iron-hydrogen, there is a much larger volume of literature which throws some light on the problem but falls short of a place in the systematic investigations, either because no attempt was made to measure equilibrium conditions or because the metal used was not iron or the gas not pure hydrogen. Such results have been variously dismissed in the past as of no importance, or as too complicated to try to explain; or they have been explained in terms of any of a dozen or more pictures, each of which is contradicted by data from other sources. The present importance of these data thus arises from their very mass and diversity, which present a picture of occlusion as a phenomenon whose variability cannot be ignored. We have attempted to organize the literature into groups comprising similar experiments or data leading to similar conclusions, thus of necessity sacrificing accuracy of historical order. Lattice Occlusion.—Throughout this discussion, the term "lattice occlusion" will be used to denote the formation of a simple solid solution of a gas in a metal lattice, usually of interstitial distribution. INTRODUCTION. A LARGE number of papers and reports dealing with the coalfields of Montana have been published + during the last 30 years, but the information is much scattered, appearing in many technical and scientific journals and in government reports, in many cases inaccessible to those most interested. In recent years, especially since 1905, ,our knowledge of the geology and coal contents of the important fields of the State has been much increased. Fairly specific and detailed information is. at hand on all of the principal coal-bearing areas. The fields for which data are not at hand are small and inaccessible, and their omission will not materially affect an estimate of the coal resources of the State, viewed as a whole. The paper here presented is a summary of existing information, all sources having been freely utilized in its preparation. The viewpoint adopted is that of the geologist, rather than that of the engineer or colliery operator, because by far the greater portion of the coal areas present have had only the most meager development, making information that, will aid in prospecting and opening the at present little used coal lands of paramount importance to those interested in the coal fields of the State.

The protaxis of the North American continent consists, as is well known, of a large V-shaped area of Archæan rocks, which lie for the most part in the Dominion of Canada, and occupy an area of not less than 2,031,000 square miles. The western limit of this area extends from 'Lake Superior in a northwesterly direction to the Arctic Ocean, the southern is found along the Lower St. Lawrence as far as Labrador. A minor area, spoken of as the Adirondack region of northern New York, has a somewhat broken connection with the main body in a narrow band of igneous rock, which crosses the Upper St. Lawrence where it leaves Lake Ontario. The ancient crystallines are also presumably beneath all the later sediments, hut the above brief description outlines their principal exposures. This great rock-complex consists, for the most part, of a series of gneisses, which present great variations in both structure and composition. In certain sections areas of gneisses of the general composition of granite, and remarkably uniform in character, prevail. They consist largely, if not exclusively, of crystalline rocks in which a banding or foliation has been induced by pressure. These rocks constitute the basal member of the Laurentian system, and by later writers have been referred to as the Ottawa gneiss. In other and quite extended areas, gneisses, regarded by many as composed of altered sediments, are associated with crystalline limestones, quartzites, and much injected igneous matter. To this series the term Grenville has been applied. Both of these series of gneisses are penetrated by various igneous masses, of which the most important are great intrusioiis of several members of the gabbro family, such as anortho-sites, norites, pyroxenites, and gabbros proper; the whole form-

The objective of the present study was to detennine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids as collectors. Streaming potential measurements were made on a plug of pure synthetic rutile in solutions of inorganic electrolytes and unsaturated 18-carbon fatty acid soaps. Experimental results from these tests are detailed in the paper. The collector effectiveness of oleic acid with one double bond, linoleic acid with two double bonds, and linolenic acid with three double bonds has been a matter of speculation for many years, and conflic- ting experimental evidence1-8 has not clarified the issue. The overall objective of the present study was to determine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon un-saturated fatty acids as collectors. Since zeta potential is dependent on adsorption and orientation of ions at the solid-liquid interface, its variation under different conditions of pH and collector concentration should throw some light on the behavior of unsatu-rated fatty acids in flotation pulps. Titanium dioxide, in the form of rutile, was chosen for the investigation because it is now available in a very pure, synthetic, crystalline state, and despite the fact that it is one of the most important synthetic inorganic chemicals in commercial use, its electro-kinetic properties have not been closely studied. A Rise in less than ten years from obscurity into great prominence economically, tersely summarizes the history and status of the Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores. The Cuyuna district produces and ships mostly high-phosphorus iron ore, but the annual production of manganiferous iron ore is increasing rapidly and productions from individual mines are becoming more regular and more dependable as to grades and tonnages. This ore bids fair to become, shortly, the principal product of the district and is responsible for its present economic prominence. The iron ores of the district have been described, by the author and others, in many publications and will not be discussed here. Lately the manganiferous iron ores have been given some attention, but the range and variations of chemical composition of the ores, the principal physical characteristics of the ores and their deposits, the relative importance of the different ores and their possibilities in future developments, and the life of the respective reserves have not been discussed. It is impossible to give all of this information with the positiveness necessary for it to constitute a reliable guide for investment or even for future mine development. Each property and each party presents a special case and deserves critical consideration. We are dealing with special ores and always with a set of new conditions. Sufficient information of a general nature can be given, however, to indicate the reason for and the trend of the presently augmented developments in the district. In a great thickness of a big variety of sedimentary rocks, probably of Upper Huronion age, prevailingly of green, schistose phases of slaty and volcanic material intricately intermixed, lies a thin bed containing lenses of iron-bear ing formation. These lenses occur singly or in groups, thus causing the variation in the thickness of the formation; or they are separated at their ends and give rise to discontinuity or they overlap and display continuity with lateral offsets. About a year and a half ago, at the San Francisco meeting of the American Chemical Society, in connection with the excursions to local smelting-works, I had occasion to show some lantern-slides illustrating the recent commercial development of electrical methods for precipitating the suspended matter from smelter-smoke, the underlying phenomena of which were clearly brought to the attention of the technical public by Sir Oliver Lodge as long ago as 1884. In the .Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, August, 1911, most of these views were reproduced, together with an account of the work from its beginning up to July, 1911. To-day I wish particularly to show you some of the further developments of the work since that time; but in order to make these clear they will be prefaced by a brief abstract of the article above referred to. The removal of suspended particles, from gases, by the aid of electric discharges is by no means a new idea. As early as 1824 we find it suggested by Hohlfeld ' as a means of suppressing ordinary smoke, and again a quarter of a century later by Guitard.2 These suggestions, which do not seem to have stimulated any practical study of the question, were soon entirely forgotten, and only brought to light again by Sir Oliver Lodge: many years after he himself had independently rediscovered the same phenomena and brought them to public attention4 in a lecture before the Liverpool Section of the So-

THE campaign now being waged to improve the quality of the rock-drill bit is the natural outcome f the scientific development of the drilling machine during the past twenty years. In this development there has been a great increase of power output per unit of weight of machine. But the development of the rock drilling engine has been seriously hampered by the need of a drill bit that would withstand, without undue wear or breakage, the heavy rapid blows of the improved pneumatic hammer. This problem was difficult to solve because an increase in the weight or section of the drill-steel bar resulted in decreased cutting speed and higher operating costs of both the bit and its actuating engine. The solution, therefore, is to make the bit of steel that, for a given weight or section, will be more shock and wear resisting. In the attempt to meet these requirements, many of the drill-steel manufacturers alloyed the steel with vanadium, chromium, nickel, etc., on the assumption that such elements would improve the rock-drill bit but due to the sensitiveness of such steel to forging and heat treatment, higher cost, and lack f continuity of effort on the part of the steel manufacturer to perfect this product, but little progress has been made in the adoption of these steels and the so-called straight carbon steel is today recognized as the standard material for all rock-drill bits. The first step in improving drill-bit efficiency is the determination f the cause of breakage and wear. For this reason, in 1917, certain rock-drill manufacturers, in conjunction with some of the larger mining interests, conducted exhaustive tests in both the field and laboratory. It was then found that, in the main, the cause of drill-steel troubles is not attributable to the duty imposed upon it by the normal operation of the drilling engine, but to improper forging and heat treating of the bit and to the subjecting of the bit to improper use. The fact that it is possible to minimize the troubles attributable to improper heat treatment of the drill steel has been demonstrated and it is recommended that such knowledge be made available by teaching those interested in the production, use, and up-keep of drill bits the principles on which success in this direction may be achieved.

Although jigging has been the subject of extensive studies, evaluation of the effect of various jigging factors on the efficiency of separation has been less comprehensive. The basic factors that affect jigging separation are reviewed, a mathematical model describing jigging kinetics is presented, and attention is focussed on the mechanisms of the stratification process. The parameters of the kinetic model (the Wei- bull distribution function) are redefined in a gravity concentration technological sense, and their values are estimated for a wide range of jigging conditions. Several mathematical relationships (regression models) are also formulated which express the dependence of total time required for the complete stratifaction of mineral particles on the operating jigging variables.

Blowing acid Bessemer converters with oxygen-steam produces steel of below 0.002 pct N2 content. This method of blowing, combined with a dephosphorizing treatment in the steel ladle, results in low-carbon steels of low nitrogen and low phosphorous (under 0.035 pet) contents, which has physical properties equivalent to open-hearth steels of similar analysis. Using a 50-50 mixture of oxygen and steam, the refinitzg rate is increased 25 pct over blowing with natural air, and scrap charge increased from 3 to 10 pet. Bottom life is normal with proper tuyere area and arrangements, fumes are decreased, yields increased, and hydrogen content is normal. THE acid Bessemer plant at the South Works of Wheeling Steel Corp., consists of two 15-ton bottom blown converters with a monthly capacity of 57,000 N.T. The product of the shop is skelp billets for continuous welded pipe and slabs for ordinary drawing and forming quality sheets. Approximately 50 pct of ingot production is regular Bessemer steel of natural Phos content and the remainder is a dephosphorized grade of steel made by a special treatment of the blown metal as it is poured into the steel ladle. The low Phos grade of steel has certain advantages over the higher Phos grade but since both grades were produced by blowing natural air, the N2 content was in the range of 0.015 pct which limited its application. In 1954 it was decided to explore the possibilities of blowing with a steam-oxygen mixture for the production of steel of both low N2 and low Phos contents. The necessary equipment was installed to operate one converter in this manner and early in 1955 an experimental run of 160 heats was made by blowing with a steam-oxygen blast and excluding natural air entirely. During this period the proper operating techniques were established, such as blast pressures, steam-oxygen mixtures, valves and instrumental control equipment, tuyere arrangement in the bottoms, blowing times and production rates, and a thorough study made of the final steel quality. Also during this experimental period the dephosphorizing practice was improved by the use of a tap hole below the lip of the vessel. This provided a clean separation of the acid converter slag and blown metal which made the dephosphorizing treatment more effective. The results of this experimental run dictated further development of this practice and a second run of 720 heats was made in 1957. The quality features and conversion cost results were in line with expectations and accordingly a 400-ton per day oxygen plant is now being installed. The plant is scheduled for completion in September of this year. This will provide sufficient oxygen to operate both vessels on steam-oxygen blast and delete natural air blowing entirely. The steel will then be below 0.002 pct N2 bar content and the dephosphorized grades will be between 0.015 and 0.040 pct Phos. STEAM-OXYGEN BLOWING The steam for the process is fed to the plant at 220 psig pressure through a 6-in. line. The high-purity oxygen is compressed to 200 psig and conducted through an 8-in. line. The oxygen from the main line is valved down to 100 psig and passed through a steam heated heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is regulated to supply oxygen at 300°F to the steam-oxygen mixing station. It is essential that the incoming oxygen be held at this temperature to avoid condensation of the steam with resulting excessive erosion of the clay tuyeres in the vessel bottom. Oxygen is admitted to the mixing chamber by a 6-in. hydraulically operated valve driven by the ratio control regulator on impulse from the flow of steam. Steam is admitted to the steam-oxygen mixture station through a 2 1/2-in. hydraulically driven valve. The ratio control regulator acts to increase or decrease oxygen input as the steam flow increases or decreases with changing positions of the Blower's control lever. The important point to note here is that steam flow always precedes the oxygen flow as a safety measure. The control valves have sufficient capacity to afford protection should blow pipe trouble develop. A 50-50 mixture for these 15-ton heats demands an oxygen flow of 3800 standard cu ft per min along with 317 lb of steam. The Blower's stations is provided with an indicating blast pressure gage, and indicating steam and oxygen flow meters. Signal and warning lights indicate the valve positions and line pressures. A control room at the real of the Blower's pulpit room houses the ratio control and pressure regulators, as well as the various meter bodies. The hand actuated wheels used to change the conditions are mounted on a panel on the front of the meter control house. The recording steam and oxygen meters used for totalizing and accounting purposes are also mounted on this panel.

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Ltd., of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240-kW (3000-hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years and full production was attained alter several mouths operation.

One- and two-dimensional mathematical models have been developed that simulate transient, two-phase flow of hydrocarbon mixtures in porous media in a manner that accounts for interphase mass transfer. Numerical simulations of one-dimensional depletion-drive experiments using a two-component hydrucarbon fluid were used to establish the validity of the mathematical models. In addition, the experimental and numerical data were used to demonstrate that production rate had a relatively insignificant effect on the recovery of individual hydrocarbon components from the experimental system, and that attainment of equilibrium between phases is possible for a wide range of liquid and vapor velocities in reservoirs containing light hydrocarbon fluids. Results of some two-dimensional numerical simulations are also presented. INTRODUCTION This study was undertaken to develop a mathematical model that would simulate transient, two-phase flow of hydrocarbon mixtures in porous media under conditions that result in interphase mass transfer and to test the validity of the assumptions used to set up the model. In addition, the study was designed to determine if production rate influences the recovery of individual hydrocarbon components from reservoirs producing by depletion drive. Two-phase flow in porous media, with interchange of components between the two phases, is important in many petroleum recovery processes. Studiesl-5 conducted within the last 3 years have outlined methods of solving multiphase flow problems incorporating mass transfer. Some of these studies have also indicated the importance of accounting for mass transfer under various producing conditions. An earlier work6 first demonstrated the importance of combining relative permeability data with equilibrium ratios in compositional balance methods. The mathematical model presented in this paper is formulated so that a phase behavior package, as described in previous papers,5,17 is not required as an integral part of the routine employed to solve for the primary dependent variables. The finite difference formulation is designed so that all the primary variables can be solved for simultaneously. This is accomplished by utilizing one basic set of equations. These innovations, which are in contrast to other models2,3,5 but are similar in some respects to the approach used by Taylor,l render the total problem computationally simpler than any of the previously referenced formulations. The mathematical model was developed by combining Darcy's law with a continuity equation for each hydrocarbon component. The principal assumptions invoked in the formulation were (1) that capillary forces and diffusional effects are negligible, and (2) that thermodynamic equilibrium exists in the reservoir at all times. No assumption as to the type of vaporization process was made in formulating this model. Experimental data were required to complete this study. These were generated by conducting several depletion drive experiments. The experimental apparatus consisted of a sandstone core enclosed in a pressurized casing. The apparatus was designed in such a manner that the core could be charged with a liquid hydrocarbon mixture and depleted at different production rates. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsyl¬vania, about 1 1/2 miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. GEOLOGICAL SKETCH OF THE TERRITORY TO BE WORKED BY THE SHAFTS AND REASON FOR SINKING THEM. The Mammoth or E Vein of the anthracite coal-measures in that part of the Schuylkill region near and north of the town of Pottsville lies at a great depth below the surface, and has, in consequence, never been worked in that locality.

The general geology and mineralogy of bentonite, including pertinent technological details of clay minerals in the montmorillonite group, are summarized. Worldwide occurrences of bentonite deposits are reviewed, with emphasis on geologic methods and economic principles of evaluation. Active mining districts are described and areas with potential for current and future development are assessed. The production history of bentonite, principal producers, major consumers, and indicated trends are noted; also attention is directed to the hundreds of minor industrial uses of this versatile material, ranging from the manufacture of (A)cid neutralizers to (Z)eolite water softeners. Recent significant results of both basic and applied research are reported, with suggested lines of investigation for current and near-future consideration.

The deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of copper, re-sulting from heating in contact with reducing gases, is well known, but the mechanism of the action does not appear to have been definitely established. The purpose of the present investigation was not to determine the exact variations in physical quality of commercial copper, with its various impurities, as dependent upon the composition of the gas, temperature of exposure, etc., but rather to study the nature of the action and the conditions under which it occurs. The physical result of the so-called "gassing" of copper has been generally described as the development of "brittleness." There appears to be a striking decrease in tensile strength, associated with a considerable loss of ductility, and a small copper strip or wire affected in this way can be snapped in two when bent. Larger articles may have an outer layer alone affected, which can be detached from the core by hammering or bending. Perhaps the earliest reference to this subject is that of Heynl in 1900, and among the later observers may be mentioned Archbutt,2 Bengough and Hill,3 Johnson,4 Mathewson and Thalheimer,5 and Ruder.6 Bengough and Hill, while working with arsenical copper, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gases within the copper itself, while Ruder endeavored to explain the action by the reduction of the
