THE highly publicized shortage of students enrolled in engineering curricula has brought about a rapid increase in the enrollment in engineering schools in many parts of the country. Though most of the various curricula in the mineral industries field have participated in this increase, the experience at Pennsylvania State University has been that the nonmineral types of engineering have been increasing at a much more rapid rate than those in the College of Mineral Industries. [ ] It has been a matter of some concern to the staff of the College of Mineral Industries that enrollment in the curricula of the school has not been increasing at a rate commensurate with that experienced in the College of Engineering. If the lack of trained young graduates for our vital mineral industries is to be overcome, this situation must be remedied.

Two problems which are common to nearly every branch of applied physics, including geophysics, are the ‘Dirichlet Problem’ and the ‘Poisson Problem.’ A numerical method for their solution is derived and a problem of heat flow in a plate is solved using a high-speed digital computer. The solution to this problem is presented in a form which illustrates the versatility of computer output.

MOST papers on xanthate have dealt with principles rather than practice. On the assumption that many millmen are interested in knowing where and in what manner the xanthates are being used in mills other than their own, this paper will summarize the results of a recent survey of North American plants. A brief background story and a description of the xanthates will be followed with the results of that survey; then a few observations will be made on storage, feeding, and ore testing. The first xanthate was made in 1822 by Zeise of the University of Copenhagen. With commendable scientific detachment (or perhaps a bad cold) Zeise ignored a more pervading quality of the substance and named it for its color, after the Greek word "xanthos," meaning yellow. During the first 80 years of its recorded existence xanthate found use only in.small quantity as an insecticide; after the turn of the century there was some further demand for it in the vulcanization of rubber. It was not until 1922, by coincidence the centennial of Zeise's discovery, that C. H. Keller of San Francisco, seeking sulphidizing agents, recalled xanthate in connection with his experience years earlier when he had seen this material used in Europe to combat grape phylloxera. His successful tests with the new flotation reagent culminated in the basic xanthate patent (U. S. 1,554,216) in 1925. In the minds of many metallurgists the introduction of xanthate as a flotation reagent is identified with the beginnings of alkaline circuits, the first use of chemical collectors, and the beginning of selective flotation. Actually, these preceded xanthatc by a number of years. The alkaline circuit in lead-zinc flotation was introduced by Lyster as early as 1912. In 1922 Sheridann and Griswold made their momentous discovery (Timber Butte) that alkali cyanides and zinc sulphate effectively inhibited the flotation of pyrite and sphalerite in pulps made alkaline with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The use of lime to retard pyrite in copper flotation began within two years after Ralston directed attention to its possibilities in 1917. These were the beginnings of modern selective flotation, which was practiced successfully on copper-iron ores at Nacozari in 1922, and at Inspiration, Cananea, and others only shortly afterward. In the lead-zinc mills, selective flotation was of even greater economic importance at that time. The Sunnyside plant of U. S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. used the process earlier than 1920, and Consolidated, Timber Butte, and others soon followed. As a chemical collector xanthate was relatively a latecomer, for the Corliss patent of 1917 covered the first of these, alpha-naphthylamine, and the Perkins patent of 1918 the second, thiocarbanilid. Specialist teams performed detailed studies of all operational aspects at Kennecott's four copper mines and concentrators, four smelters, and two electrore-fineries. The specific recommendations that resulted may transform the Metal Mining Division into the country's lowest cost producer of copper by the mid-1980s. In this article, N. J. Themelis and R. V. The formation of austenite from ferrite, ferrite plus retastable carbide, spheroidite, and pearlite has been studied in a series of irons, Fe-C alloys, and plain-carbon steels using fast heating techniques. In the absence of carbide, austenite nucleates at ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries; nucleation is followed by the rapid growth characteristic of a massive transfornation. The trarnsformation occurs at 950°C at heating rates of 106º C per sec and cannot be suppressed. Metastable carbide dissolves before austenite forms and does not influence the transformation kinetics. For spheroidite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at the jinction between carbides and ferrite grain boundaries. Growth from these centers proceeds until the carbide is completely enveloped; subsequent growth occurs by carbon diffusion through the austenite envelope. For pearlite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at pearlite colony intersections. Carbide la)?zellae dissolve at the advancing austenite interface but complete solution of carbide does not occur; the residtial carbide is eventually dissolvled or spheroid-ized depending on the carbon cuntent. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the austenite growth rate into Fe-C pearlite when incomplete carbide dissolution is assumed are satisfactorily explained by an approximate colume diffusion model. The impurities present in plain-carbon steel reduce the growth rate of austenite in comparison to that jound in an Fe-C alloy. The formation of austenite has been studied in much less detail than the decomposition of austenite. This is primarily a result of the importance of harden-ability in determining the mechanical properties of steel. Recently, more interest in the kinetics of austenite formation has resulted from the discovery by Grange1 that rapid heating techniques strengthen steel by refining the austenite grain size. Although the strengthening effect is not large, it is accompanied by no loss in ductility. In addition, interest continues in rapid heat treatment of low-carbon steel sheet for tin plate applications.2,3 Among the few systematic studies of austenite formation are the early work of Roberts and Mehl4 on formation of austenite from pearlite and recent work of Molinder5 and of Judd and paxton6 on formation of austenite from spheroidite. Also, Boedtker and Duwez7 and Haworth and paar8 have recently studied the formation of austenite from ferrite in relatively pure iron, Kidin et al.9,10 have studied the formation of austenite in 8 pct Cr steels, and Paxton has recently discussed various aspects of austenite formation in steels." The present work was undertaken to determine the kinetics of austenite formation for a variety of starting structures including ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, ferrite plus spheroidal cementite, and ferrite plus pearlitic cementite. Emphasis was placed on determining the active sites for austenite nucleation, determining the temperature and time range of austenite formation, and in the case of pearlite a careful study of the growth rate of austenite was made in the absence and presence of impurities. By using a variety of heating techniques including laser-pulse heating, it has been possible to study austenite formation in an isothermal fashion over a wide range of temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys studied in the present work are a zone-refined iron with 4 pprn C, an Fe-C alloy with 130 pprn C, 2 Fe-C alloys with 0.77 and 0.96 wt pct C, and a plain carbon steel with 0.96 wt pct C. The zone-refined iron and Fe-C alloys contained 60 pprn and 200 pprn total substitutional impurities, respectively. The plain carbon steel contained 2400 pprn Si, 2000 pprn Mn, and 900 pprn Cr. Various heat treatments were given to these alloys to produce different starting structures of equiaxed ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, fine pearlite, and spheroidite. These heat treatments are given in Table I. A wide range of heating rates were employed in this work because many of the reactions occur so quickly at temperatures in the austenite range that they are completed during the initial heating cycle unless very fast heating rates are used. Essentially the same heating techniques employed by Speich et a1.12 and Speich and Fisher13 were used in this work. For time intervals of 2 sec to 20 hr, simple hand immersion of 0.010-in. thick specimens in a Pb-Bi bath was employed. These specimens were quenched in a 10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH aqueous bath. For time intervals of 100 m-sec to 2 sec, an automatic dunking and quenching device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens. Again, liquid Pb-Bi baths were used for a heating medium but now helium gas quenching was employed. For time intervals of 2 to 100 m-sec a laser heating device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens; a helium plus fine water-droplet spray was now used for quenching. Additional information on heating times shorter than 2 m-sec was obtained by study of the zones around the centrally heated laser spot. Here diffusion of heat from the centrally heated zone raises the temperature of the specimen locally to all temperatures between ambient and the peak temperature, but for times of the order of microseconds. During the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter—the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well—than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars. DURING the early years of Homestake operations, shaft signaling from the cage tenders to the hoisting engineers was done by mechanical means. Small steel cables or jointed steel rods were suspended in the shaft compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' stations by means of bell cranks and steel wires. The system was simple and economical and served the purpose well until the mine reached a depth of 1000 ft., then the system became slow and cumbersome and required a considerable amount of muscular effort to operate it with much speed, because of the inertia of the heavy moving parts. The mechanical signaling was superseded by a simple electrical system consisting of a single pair of wires in steel conduit for each shaft compartment. In the shaft at each station a pull switch was connected to the wires. The switches were operated by means of bell cords, which extended from station to station. This electrical system was a great improvement over the mechanical one, but it had one serious drawback, which also applied to the older system; namely, the engineer did not know where a signal originated. Later on this signaling was improved to overcome this drawback, and to give the engineer a positive indication of a signal's origin. In this system a separate return wire from each pull switch is carried to an annunciator at the engineer's station, where it indicates the signal's origin. While the annunciator system used by Homestake is very safe and reliable, it has the inherent drawback of all wire-connected systems in that it is impossible to send a signal from a moving cage. A number of years ago Homestake became interested in the possibility of using some sort of radio transmission for shaft signaling. The company did much experimental work with purely radio signal transmission, but no practical way was discovered to use radio transmission in a mine shaft for signaling to or from a cage. Therefore, all efforts were directed to devising a practical way of using the hoisting rope as part of the circuit. It was realized that the return circuit from the rope would need to be through electrostatic coupling between the cage and the earth or ground sides of the shaft, because the guides would not always be wet enough to make possible good electrical contact between the cage and earth, therefore relatively high-frequency alternating current was chosen as the medium of transmission. Soon a practical system was developed for transmitting an electric current from a moving cage over an electric circuit of which the hoisting rope was a part. Until recent years, maintenance of surface coal handling facilities was a relatively simple task. Equipment consisted principally of conveyors, screens and crushers of comparatively simple construction. Electrical equipment consisted of motors and starters, with little, if any, interlocking. In most cases failure of any component affected only the grades of coal loaded so that even a prolonged breakdown did not affect mine operation materially. However, with the introduction of modern cleaning plants, the picture has changed. The equipment is much more complex and therefore more difficult to maintain. In many cases failure of any component of the plant prevents loading of coal. Even if provision is made to bypass, the quality of coal loaded is lowered, affecting markets. In the case of plants designed to permit full seam mining, marketable coal cannot be loaded without operation of the cleaning plant. Under these conditions it is apparent that considerable thought and effort toward better maintenance are justified. In order to assure continuous, efficient and economical operation, maintenance should receive consideration, not only after the plant is in operation, but while it is being designed. It is hardly necessary to say that the designer should strive for sturdi-ness and wearing qualities. It is sometimes not realized, however, that even the best parts will sooner or later require replacement or repair. The designer should, there- fore, give consideration to accessibility. Anyone who has had to do with cleaning plant maintenance is familiar with installations where several hours are required to get at a part that can be repaired or replaced in a few minutes, once it is accessible. As in most cases, experience is the best guide. The men who operate and maintain this equipment know the problems encountered. Whenever available, the opinions of these men should be sought and heeded. As an example, we might consider the refuse elevator on a Chance Cone. Our company is now operating three of these cones, the first of which was installed in 1941, and the latest in 1946. Exact records are not available, but well over 50 pct of delays charged to the Chance Cones have been caused by the refuse elevator. This elevator receives refuse from the cone and carries it to a point above the water level of the cone, discharging onto a dewatering and desanding screen. Since the elevator operates under water and necessarily has close clearances in the lower boot, it tends to jam on large pieces of refuse or tramp iron. The chain, buckets and boot are also subjected to the action of water, sand and refuse, which accelerate normal wear. In case of jamming or chain-breakage it is necessary to drain the elevator and the cone so that even a minor fault in the elevator causes a considerable loss of time for the cone. In our new plant, which will contain two Chance Cones, the refuse elevator has been eliminated. The sessile-drop technique was employed to study the effect of atmosphere and alloy additions of titanium and chromium on the surface tension and contact angle of nickel on sapphire substrates at 1500oC. Shear tests were conducted on the solidified sessile drops. The liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel on sapphire was found to be 1747 ergs per sq cm, with a contact angle of 109.6 deg. The surface tension and contact angle were not affected significantly by the four atmospheres, vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen. Small additions of titanium and chromium decreased the contact angle and for the same alloy content, contact angles were lower in pure argon than in pure hydrogen. On the basis of shear-test results , the most probable cause for adhesion in the Ni-Al2O system is the formation of NiO:Al2O3 spinel at the interface; in the titanium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is thought to be due to a mechanical interlocking effect; in the chromium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is believed to be the result of solid-solution formation involving Cr2O3 and Al2O3 at the interface. In the last few years there has been considerable interest in reinforcing metals with ceramic whiskers. It has been postulated that, by reinforcing nickel with sapphire whiskers, high-temperature strengths su- perior to those of the best current nickel alloys can be achieved.' To fabricate a whisker-metal composite having optimum density and strength, understanding of wettability and adherence in the system is of prime importance. Although there has been some previous research in this a a need for further studies has been cited4-8 to understand better the effects of impurities, alloys additions, and atmosphere on the wetting and bonding of metals to metal oxides. The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors involved in the wetting and adherence of nickel/nickel alloys to sapphire (single-crystal a Al2O3). Sessile-drop experiments were conducted in vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen, to determine the effect of atmosphere on the contact angle of the metals on sapphire, and the liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel. The solidified sessile drops were sheared from the sapphire substrate to measure the bond strength between the metal and ceramic. The alloy additions chosen were titanium and chromium since both enhance the wetting of nickel on sapphire.2, 3c Also, titanium is commonly used when brazing metal-to-ceramic seals to improve adherence. Since chromium forms an oxide that is completely soluble in sapphire, it was thought that the oxide could serve as a transition phase to promote bonding between the Ni-Cr alloy and sapphire. I) EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The sessile-drop apparatus was a horizontal furnace, with an induction-heated, cylindrical molybdenum susceptor in a water-cooled Pyrex chamber. THE " Tar-Sands." is the name which has been given to the extensive horizontal deposit of fine Cretaceous sand, blackened by tarry petroleum, which forms the banks of the last or lowest 130 miles of the Athabasca river before it terminates in Athabasca lake. The Cretaceous strata, to which these sands belong, extend northwesterly from Dakota all the way to this lake and for 500 miles beyond it. The Athabasca river forms the uppermost section of the Athabasca-Mackenzie, one of the great rivers of the world. It rises on the Pacific side of the Rocky mountains, westward of Edmonton, and flows north of east to a point called Athabasca. Landing, 100 miles north of Edmonton, where it turns northward and runs about 280 miles before it falls into the west end of Athabasca lake. The section of this river-system which discharges the lake just named into Great Slave lake, is called Slave river, and below the latter lake it becomes the Mackenzie river. Along the section of 280 miles of the Athabasca river above mentioned, the Cretaceous strata consist of bluish-gray and drab-gray marls, on top, from Athabasca Landing to Drowned rapid, 110 miles down stream; then heavily bedded gray sandstones, 225 ft. in greatest thickness, underlying these, form the banks for about 40 miles further. The strata appear to be horizontal, but they really clip very slightly to the southward. At Drowned rapid, we see the first of the tar-sands resting on almost horizontal beds of bluish-gray limestone of Devonian age. In some places the limestone is associated with shaly or marly bands. Notwithstanding the great hiatus between the two series, the horizontal tar-sands lie conformably upon the almost level upper beds of the limestone wherever the two formations are seen together, all along the river, throughout a

NO ONE could fail to be gratified to receive so profound an approbation in his calling from the members of one's own profession. To have re-ceived this distinction from men, many of whom have been professional associates and friends over more than a quarter of a century, warrants a pride. and satisfac-tion that could come from no other source. It has often been said that men are really known only to their brothers in labor and in profession. The long friendship I have received from Mr. Saunders and the distinguished service that he has contributed to the mining industry add to my appre-ciation of this event. Mr. Kelley's remarks bring my mind easily to the beginning of that period of great advance in the engineering, profession of forty years ago. Three great forces contributed to the development of the profession. The first was the era of intense development of minerals, metallurgy; and transportation in our great West. It greatly stimulated invention; it made a demand for training and skill on the part of our engineers. The pressure of national development advanced our American practice beyond the rest of the world. Moreover, the skill of our engineers of that period owes a great debt to American educators. The leaders of our universities were the first of all the educators of the world to recognize that upon them rested the responsibility to provide fundamental train-ing in, the application of science to engineering under the broadening influence and cultivation of university life. They were the first to realize that engineering must be transformed into a profession in the highest sense, not only in the training and character but that the essential quality of a profession is the instillation of ethics. That implies not alone the job but the responsibility of the community for the job. Our uni-versities poured into our development a great stream of men with this background and training. A third distinction that grew in American engineering was the transformation from solely a technical profession to a profession of administrators-the business manager with technical training.

THE aftermath of a world war brings up a number of economic problems for the consideration of all thinking and patriotic citizens. The solution of the problems which confront the country at this time cannot well be accomplished by reference to past experience, for such conditions as confront us today have not existed in the past. We must, therefore, in any attempt to solve the present problems, rely to a great extent upon a careful analysis of present conditions to determine what is wrong; and after this is determined, seek the remedy and apply it. It needs no argument to establish the fact that, in the effort to win the war, the cost of so doing, and the waste in connection with it were, to a large extent, lost sight of; and this situation caused high wages, high cost of all materials, and of food supplies.

A SELF-RESPECTING miner doesn't wash the cuttin's off his hard hat until he quits his job but, on the other hand, he keeps his lamp clean and a "spot" focus on the work at hand; the former habit is a matter of pride and the latter serves for efficient operation. During 1949, the mining engineer got all the "wet raises" for the problem of cutting costs to meet the drop of metal prices and keeping research work up to schedule when strikes tied up his work were his headaches. We note, not without admiration, that he hasn't washed the muck off his hat in token of surrender but, on the contrary, his light shines bright on the job to be done as can be seen in the following pages. Few people have any conception of how much ore and rock have to be mined and how much sorting it takes to cull a pound of copper from a 1 % ore body. These people would be even more startled to picture the problems faced by the engineer in mining and extracting, profitably, .2 oz of gold from a ton of ore as is done at some of our lode mines. Strikers have sometimes kept our researchers from their pilot plants and research laboratories, but the end of the year shows progress in making ore out of taconite and ferruginous sandstone, with a pilot plant in operation at Aurora, Minn., and plans for one near Birmingham. Unfortunately, it looks as though the mining engineer will have to make John Doe secure in mineral resources in spite of himself. Coal for steel, power, and to warm our homes is still economically possible, in spite of Mr. Lewis, through development of mechanized tools for mining. During the year, the use of continuous mining machines has extended, transport systems are being adopted to keep the ore flowing from the face to the tune of 40 tons per man-shift. Experiments in the gasification of coal are going forward in several places and may eventually extend our fuel reserves by the addition of coal seams now too lean for mining. Liquid fuel from coal, oil shale, or natural gas will become economic when oil consumption exceeds our supply; but, at less than 30 cents a ton direct cost for mining oil shale, the engineer is almost making it competitive under present market conditions. In this age of specialists, the mining engineer is still holding his own as a broad-gauge man. As a matter of fact, he is emerging from a stage of semispecialization as a coal, nonmetallics, or metal mining man to the realization that, with mechanization, mining is fundamentally materials handling whether it is fluorspar, coal, or copper ore. From the coal business come rubber-tired mechanical loaders to the iron mines of Birmingham. Shuttle cars are also finding application in the lead mines of the Tri-State. Open-pit methods are universal. Belt conveyors, trucks, Diesels, and mobile, jumbomounted drills are finding application in all types of mining. In preparation, such methods as flotation,- heavy density, electrical, and centrifugal are finding application in coal, nonmetallics, and metals. These concepts have been recognized by the mining engineer who has kept himself informed and has been quick to seize a method, machine, or a process from another operation and, with ingenuity, applied it to his problems. This, our Annual Review issue, is written by mining engineers. In gathering these separate articles under one cover for publication, we think of it as a trrbute to the tireless energy and skill of these men. They get little of the publicity accorded physicists, medical men, labor leaders, or company executives, but they supply raw materials without which industry would die.

BUSTS of James Douglas and his friend, Ben Williams, placed in front of the library at Bisbee, Ariz., were unveiled there on April 8, and the connection of the two men with the development of the. Copper Queen mine was reviewed. Judge Bisbee, the brother-in-law of Ben Wil-liams, secured an option on the Copper Queen claim, financed its development and sent Ben Williams in to build the smelter, which turned out its first copper in November, 1880. Dr. Douglas, who was then superintendent of the Chemi-cal Copper Co., at Phoenixville, Pa., had a refining plant and, looking for more metal to refine, came to Bisbee early in 1881, where he negotiated a contract to refine the Copper Queen copper.

The National Labor Board, on June 25, ended its activities preparatory to final, dissolution by the President. No new cases will be heard nor new applications received. Controversies, jointly submitted, that could not be concluded prior to June 30, were assigned to the joint chairmen or a section of the board for disposition. The conclusion of the board's activities marks the passing of. one of the governmental agencies created during the war to further production of war materials. The board was organized under a Presidential proclamation with former President Taft and Frank P. Walsh of Kansas City as joint Chairmen, and with five members representing labor, five employers' representatives, and two members acting for the public. Mr. Walsh resigned soon after the signing of the armistice and was succeeded by Basil M. Manly of Washington. During the year that ended May 31, the hoard received 1245 cases, made awards in 462 cases, dismissed 391 for various cases, referred 315 to specified agencies, and suspended one case. Fifty-three cases remained on the docket because the hoard could not agree, and 23 cases were pending.

THE announcement of this World Conference on Mineral Resources briefly traced the development of the metals industries over the past 75 years The various phases were characterized as iron and steel for the railroad era, then copper and the electrical age, through alloy steels to the age of light metals in World War II, ending with the curtain rising on the atomic age at the end of the war The interests of mining and metallurgical industries in the atomic age may perhaps be divided broadly into three - groups (1) production of the special materials required by atomic-energy installations and processes, (2) use of atomic power in the mining or refining of materials, (3) use of radioactive isotopes and radiation in metal and chemical processes both for laboratory study and in the production of materials for use in any field In the production of special materials, the mining and metallurgical, scientific and industrial groups have already contributed much to the start of the atomic age The mining, refining and fabrication of the basic uranium to a degree of purity and form suitable for production of plutonium in the Hanford Engineering Works is just one example.
