Halogen vapor-transport synthesis of Ga(As,-,Px) and its preparation into laser junctions are described. Electrical and optical properties of Ga(As,-,PX) laser junctions are discussed. The present limitations in these properties are related to material proble?vzs and the very early state of development of Ga(As,-,PX), and are discussed in this context. Inhonzogeneity problems, fluctuation of As :P ratio, and problems with deep-level contaminants are described and related to Ga(As,-,PX) junction performance. Laser junctions are demonstrated which operate to wavelengths as short as 6470 A (77°K). The prospect that Ga(As,-,P,) will operate to wavelengths perhaps 100A shorter is mentioned. IN this paper we wish to describe some of the more important features of almost 1 year of experience in the preparation and properties of Ga(As,-,P,) p-n junction lasers. Because much data so far available are far from complete, some of the results still must be considered tentative and subject to correction and revision as work on Ga(As,-,P,) crystal problems progresses. Although the electrical, optical, and device properties of Ga(As,-,P,) junction lasers are understandably of considerable interest, the work to date points out that by far the most serious problems extant and those deserving first attention are problems involving the growth, doping, and perfection of Ga(As,-,P,) crystals. One of the most formidable of these is to grow Ga(As,-,P,) sufficiently free of deep levels, either due to contaminants or to structural imperfections, to allow fabrication of laser p-n junctions which can be cooled and not suffer from "freeze-out" of carriers on deep levels (and consequent double-injection behavior). In addition to the problems of growing crystals adequately free of deep levels and generally of the highest perfection, so that the best possible laser junctions can be realized, the further goal remains of increasing the phosphorus content well beyond 40 pct in an attempt to determine the practical lower wavelength limits of laser action in the Ga(As,-,P,) system. Even though the laser junctions prepared in Ga(As,-,P,) are of importance in their own right, we have considered them at this point mainly a means to study the growth and crystal problems of the material. It can be concluded that the laser junctions now available are almost completely limited by the purity and structural deficiencies of Ga(As,-,P,) crystals, and cannot be fairly compared with, for example, GaAs p-n junction lasers until Ga(As,-,P,) crystal growth has been more extensively developed. The basis for the statements above will become evident in the following sections which describe Ga(As,-,P,) crystal and junction preparation, and laser-junction properties. G(As,-,P,) CRYSTAL GROWTH As previously reported,2 we have found it convenient to employ the halogen vapor-transport process3 for synthesizing Ga(As,-,P,) crystals for use in laser junctions. Commercially available GaAs and Gap, separately prepared by halogen vapor tranport, are sealed in the desired ratio in a quartz vessel with a quantity of column-VI donor and a small quantity of metal halide which supplies the halogen for transport. The sealed ampoule, as shown in Fig. 1, is heated at a temperature in the range from 1025" to 1100°C at the position of the source GaAs and Gap. I FEAR that my treatment of this subject may not, in all instances, meet the approval of those who read my opinion as to the utility and efficiency of pyrometers in the making of glass, or bottle-glass. It may be superfluous for me to add that this opening statement is based on over 15 years' experience in an endeavor to successfully apply pyrometers, or heat-measuring instruments, to glass-melting furnaces, particularly the type known as tank-furnaces, and that such endeavors have proved more or less futile. It is my desire, therefore, to herein set forth the problems encountered, hoping thereby to stimulate further effort in the successful application of pyrometers. It is my desire, also, to invite criticism of the methods used and suggestions from those who may have a wider experience, or who may have better methods. Fin. 1.-GLASS TANK FURNACE. In general, I believe that the inefficient application of pyrometry to the melting of glass in tank furnaces is not due as much to the instruments as to the conditions under which they must be used and the character of the medium in which they must reside. Most of those present no doubt, are familiar, at least in a general way, with the methods and apparatus used in the melting and making of bottle-glass, or glass that is formed into containers of various shapes and designs. Most of this glass is made in what is known as a tank furnace, these furnaces vary widely in design and construction. In general, they consist of a rectangular tank-like form, built up of fireclay blocks, and range from 2 by 4 ft. (0.6 by 1.2 m.) to 24 by 140 ft. (7.3 by 42.6 m.) with a depth of glass from 2 to 5 ft.; or a capacity of from approximately. 2 to 700 tons. Fig. 1 shows the general

The influence of friction on the force required for an idealized bit tooth to penetrate a "plastic" rock is analyzed. The rock is assumed to obey the Coulomb-Mobr yield criterion and the tooth is represented by a two-dimensional sharp wedge. At the tooth-rock interface the stress field not only satisfies the yield condition but also is such that the ratio of the shearing stress to the normal stress is equal to the coefficient of friction. The solution relates the force on the tooth to the depth of penetration, the tooth angle, the coefficient of friction between the rock and bit tooth and the angle of internal friction and compressive strength of the rock. INTRODUCTION Most rocks are brittle at atmospheric pressure but exhibit ductility and increased strength as the confining pressure is increased. In a previous analysisl the force required for a bit tooth to penetrate a rigid-plastic rock was computed for two limiting conditions: (1) a perfectly lubricated tooth-rock interface which should correspond to a lower limit for the penetrating force, and (2) a perfectly rough interface which should provide an upper limit. Experimental results2 for rock indentation under confining pressure have confirmed that the analysis generally predicts upper and lower limits for the penetrating force as a function of rock properties and tooth angle. The present analysis extends the previous work to account for the friction between the rock and the tooth. ANALYSIS The force required for incipient plastic flow of an idealized model of a rock under a bit tooth is computed subjected to the following assumptions. BIT TOOTH 1. sharp two-dimensional wedge (end effects neglected) 2. rigid tooth (elastic deformation of tooth neglected) 3. displacement of tooth is normal to rock surface 4. friction exists between tooth and rock ROCK 1. semi-infinite, isotropic and homogeneous 2. rigid-plastic (elastic deformation of rock neglected) 3. non-work hardening (horizontal stress-strain curve) 4. Coulomb yield condition* (linear Mohr envelope) 5. smooth, flat surface According to the Mohr theory of failure it is assumed that failure occurs when the state of stress is such that the Mohr stress circle becomes tangent to an experimentally determined envelope. The Mohr failure curve is frequent1y approximated by a straight line and referred to as the Coulomb-Mohr failure criterion. If the rock is under sufficient pressure to be ductile we can use the linear envelope as a yield condition. The Coulomb-Mohr yield criterion is illustrated by Fig. 1 and is expressed by the following equation:l

THE value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an, invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both, surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,1 has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.2 A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the percentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. Many thousands of proximate analyses have been made by the West Virginia Geological Survey, covering nearly every county in which coal is found. Numerous others have been made by the. A number of experimental rnethods—X-ray powder diffractometry, Laue photography, X-ray small-angle scattering, and transmission electron microscopy and dijfraction—have been utilized to examine the morphology associated with precipitation from the terminal, g, solid solution of a Zn-1 pct Cu alloy. A significant age hardening was observed in a 1 pct Cu alloy. X-ray and electron diffraction results showed that the structural inhomogeneities associated with the hardening were isotructural with the matrix. The average size and shape of the inhomogeneities were deduced from the electron microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering. The preprecipitates are hexagonal platelets some 300? in diam. and some twelve unit cells thick. The orientation of the platelets was deduced from Laue photographs and electron diffraction. The platelet plane is (0001). When a large amount of pre-precipitation is present in a localized volume the new lattice is often disoriented by a rotation about (0001) of of the matrix. WhILE dilute Zn-Cu alloys have been commercially important for some 50 years, relatively very little is known metallographically about this material. The "Zilloys", zinc with about 1 wt pct Cu and sometimes a small addition of magnesium, are used to produce rolled zinc which is harder and stronger than that produced by other rollable zinc alloys.' According to the phase diagrams of the zinc-rich side of the Cu-Zn system, such dilute Zn-Cu alloys should age-harden;2-5 the solubility of copper in zinc, g-phase, at 424°C is 2.68 pct, while at 0°C it is only to 0.3 pct. However, the published literature on the aging of this system appears to be limited to a documentation of the contraction of 1, 2, and 3 pct Cu alloys aging at 95°c,6 and an attempt to measure changes in lattice parameters during aging.' In the latter work, no lattice parameter changes were detected, although a broadening of the highest-angle lines was detected and considerable diffuse scattering was observed. Micro-structural investigations have been limited to the latest stage of aging, wherein Widmanstatten precipitates are formed.3,47 These alloys are of interest for still another reason. The two most zinc-rich phases in the Cu-Zn system, 77 and E, are both hcp. Moreover, the change in a, between 17 and t for a 1 wt pct Cu alloy is onlv 3.64 -,~ct: the change in Co is 12.0 ict. It would be anticipated that precipitation in such a material might occur through metastable phases or G.P. zones with epitaxy along mutual 0001 planes. The goals of the present work are aimed at partially filling the void of knowledge concerning the early stages of precipitation from the g phase. In particular, we have attempted to document the magnitude of the age hardening of this system and to determine the size, shape, and orientation within the matrix of the elements of precipitation in an early stage of condensation. EXPERIMENTAL A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were prepared In two somewhat different ways, one method being used for X-ray Laue and diffractometer measurements, optical microscopy, and Rockwell hardness measurements and the other used for electron microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering. In the first case zinc and copper in the proper proportions to yield a 1 wt pct Cu alloy were melted together in a closed graphite crucible. Castings so made were free of apparent segregation or oxidation. The castings were then solution-annealed at 400°C for several days and then quenched in water to room temperature. Filings of portions of the specimens were made for use as X-ray powder diffractometry specimens. The electron microscope material was made as follows. Castings were made under vacuum with copper powder placed inside a hollow zinc cylinder to insure good contact of the materials. These 1 wt pct Cu pieces were then rolled to 0.1 mm with an intermediate anneal in vacuo. The rolled sheets so formed were then annealed for about 6 hr at 225°C. Finally the specimens were electropolished slowly until thin enough for transmission electron microscopy. The polishing is discussed in greater detail in the Results section. B) Measurements. X-ray measurements of three types were performed. A G.E. XRD-5 diffractometer was used to examine powders of the alloy for identification of second-phase material. A Kratky small-angle camera, also operating from a G.E. tube, was used to investigate the sizes of small precipitate particles. In both cases, nickel-filtered copper radiation was utilized. Finally, individual grains of the large-grained castings were examined in the back-reflection Laue geometry. Electron microscope studies were carried out with a J.E.O.L. Model 6A instrument. RESULTS A) Hardness Measurements. Hardness measurements performed at room temperature on the large-grained polycrystalline specimens showed a hardening which was essentially complete in 3 hr. Fig. 1 shows a typical plot of hardness vs aging time. The relative magnitude of the ultimate hardening varied from run to run between 150 and 200 pct of the value for the material immediately after quenching from the solution anneal. Most probably the variations reflect small changes in the time taken to remove the specimen from the vacuum furnace after the solution anneal.

ON Oct. 5, 1926, the day before the general ses-sions of the fall meeting of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at Pittsburgh, a round table conference on the combus-tibility and testing of coke was held at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station. There were about fifty present, with A. C. Fieldner, chief chemist of the Bureau of Mines, as chairman. The following organi-zations were represented: American Institute of Min-ing and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society for Testing Materials, American Gas Association, Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, Gas and Fuel Division of, American Chemical Society, and Southern Ohio Pig Iron and Coke Association. In opening the proceedings, Mr. Fieldner explained that the meeting had been called at the suggestion of several members of the Institute and members of other organizations. The subject is of interest to the pro-ducer and the user of coke whether it be in a blast furnace, cupola furnace, house-heating furnace, open grate, gas producer, or in a water-gas generator. There has been much confusion on this subject largely because there is no common definition of combustibility. Does the blast-furnace superintendent, the coke-oven operator, and the fuel engineer have the same under-standing of the term "combustibility"? If a common understanding can be reached, many differences of opinion will disappear. COMBUSTIBILITY OF COKE R. H. Sweetser of Columbus, Ohio, disagreed with the statement of P. H. Royster, T. L. Joseph, and S. P. Kinney in Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2524, of the Bureau of Mines, in which it was stated that the coke-oven op-erator cannot change coke combustibility by modifying oven practice. Mr. Sweetser held that the coke-oven man can change the combustibility of coke. Blast-furnace men know that coke that will burn easily with low pressure and will. come down in the regular way in the furnace can be pro-duced from a given mixture of coal. His idea of the combustibility of coke is the rate of flow through the com-bustion zone of the blast furnace. If the coke does not pass through in normal manner it is highly incombustible. H. J. Rose of the Koppers Co., Pittsburgh, objected to being pinned down so closely on this phase of the com-bustibility and incombustibility of coke. Coke-oven men are frequently obliged to change oven conditions to make a coke which gives blast-furnace men what they want. The size of the coke and the screening have an important bear-ing on combustibility, and there are many cases on record where by simply changing the different sizes of the coke, everything worked smoothly, and that is a much more combustible coke.

A geophysical survey was made in Kylertown, Pa., in an area where the ground water is polluted with acid mine drainage. Since acid mine water is a good electrical conductor, both direct-current electrical and electromagnetic loop methods were examined for their ability to determine the subsurface electrical conductivity structure and from this to imply the location of the acid water. Consistent results were obtained with the two methods and the interpreted subsurface resistivities were consistent with the electrical resistivity measured for water samples. It was demonstrated that fracture traces which act as conduits for ground water flow can be located with electromagnetic surveying methods. Thus geophysical methods for measuring subsurface electtrical resistivity can be used to advantage for monitoring the environmental impact on the ground-water system of acid mine water.

The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

The history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. 'She elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,090 tons of 012 and 18,000 tons Of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4½-cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. Equipment On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-diii~lp trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: I. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4½-cu. yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

The history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. 'She elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,090 tons of 012 and 18,000 tons Of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4½-cu. yd. dippers. We are concerned with the problem of calculating the forces produced by passing waves on a submerged object (in particular a drilling barge) located on the ocean floor. We employ the linearized theory of waves (the Airy1 theory), since solutions are generally more easily obtained in such a theory. It will be indicated how an approximate solution to the problem can be obtained for waves of finite height by use of a linear combination of Airy waves. We shall assume the submerged object has an infinite length, thus neglecting diffraction and making the problem two-dimensional. We find that there is not a considerable difference between our solution and the usual engineering solution. The force, as a function of time, is plotted in Figs. 4 and 5, together with the usual solution for easy comparison. So far, no experiments have been found to compare with the results. As will be shown, the calculations can be extended to waves of finite height (Stokes2-Struik3 waves) in an approximate fashion. This can be done by calculating the force produced by each Fourier component of the wave, separately, and omitting the coupling between the various harmonics produced by Bernoulli's theorem. The problem and its boundary conditions will be briefly stated. We seek a function, +, the velocity potential, which is harmonic, ?2?=0...........(1) and which satisfies the boundary conditions ??/?n =0 .......(2) (the normal derivative of + is zero) on the ocean floor and the sides of the barge, and s??/?y = ?..........(3) on the ocean surface, where s = g/w2........(4) The physical reasons for these choices and an interpretation of ? are given by Lamb.' DETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and de-watering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.' During the past fifteen years a number of new surface measurement techniques have been developed. Those that are broadly applicable to materials dealt with by mineral engineers include the permeability method in which a gas or liquid is passed through the sample, and the low temperature gas adsorption methods first described by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller."" Efforts to make surface determinations from size distribution curves have long been attempted"."." but because of the uncertainty of sub-sieve size distribution and inaccuracies in screen analyses, the method is at best only a rough approximation. The most widely used gas adsorption method utilizes nitrogen gas." Nitrogen adsorption, however, is not particularly suited as a tool for most mineral engineers because the method is not applicable for surface determinations on coarse materials, that is, materials coarser than approximately 150 to 200-mesh. Other gases have been used in mineral engineering studies, particularly ethane."' lo The use of ethane gas, however, involves .a technique that is too sensitive for most mineral engineering work. The permeability method of surface area determination has the disadvantage of not being sensitive enough to detect the surface represented by minute cracks, the so-called internal surface of a particle. The low temperature krypton adsorption method described by Beebe1 utilizes apparatus and techniques that are essentially the same as those used in the ethane adsorption method."1° The surface area is calculated by the B.E.T. method."-' The krypton adsorption technique is particularly suited to the needs of the mineral engineer because: (1) The method can be used for making surface area measurements of rather coarse materials (35 to 48-mesh), as well as extremely fine materials, such as clays or colloidal slimes with specific surface that might be as high as 20 to 30 mb er g. (2) The use of krypton gas offers the advantage of low saturation pressures (2-3 mm) at the conveniently obtained liquid nitrogen temperature. Therefore the krypton vacuum system need not be designed to measure or withstand internal gas, pressures above one atmosphere as is the case with the nitrogen gas method. (3) The krypton technique offers the safety feature of employing liquid nitrogen, as contrasted to the ethane technique in which liquid oxygen is required. Furthermore, ethane vapor pressure at liquid oxygen temperatures is low (about 10 microns), and a high sensitivity McLeod gage is required for pressure readings. (4) The measurement technique with krypton gas is much simpler and faster, and the apparatus is less elaborate than that required with either nitrogen or ethane gases. Apparatus A krypton surface measurement apparatus like that used at M.I.T. is shown in Fig. 1. It is constructed of pyrex glass. A vacuum is maintained by two mercury diffusion pumps in series backed by a mechanical vacuum pump."' The vacuum thermocouple gage is used for checking the vacuum within the system. This type of gage is quite sensitive down to a pressure of 1 micron of mercury," but may be used to indicate pressures much lower than that

Mining by hydraulic process of the important gold-bearing gravels of the Sacramento Valley in the basins of the Yuba, Bear and American rivers began in 1853, and continued at an ever-increasing rate for 30 years. In its most active days it reached an annual production of $15,000,000, and averaged $10,000,000 per year over the 30 years. During that period no provisions were made to prevent the debris from being discharged into the water courses, and ultimately large quantities of silt, sand and gravel were washed down to the lower valleys; filling channels, causing overflow of agricultural lands and difficulty in maintaining navigable depths in the Sacramento River. Agitation and suits filed because of these damages finally resulted in the injunction decision of Judge L. B. Sawyer,' in the U.S. Circuit Court, Jan. 23, 1884, which closed down practically all hydraulic mining operations not having means to restrain their debris. In 1893 (approved March 1, 1893), Congress passed the act introduced by Representative Anthony Caminetti, of California, creating the California Debris Commission, composed of three officers assigned from the Engineer Corps of the U.S. Army, and since that time it has been legal and possible within the drainage systems of Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to conduct hydraulic mining of gold-bearing gravels behind dams built under this commission's permit and supervision. In the watersheds of the Trinity and Klamath rivers, which flow directly to the Pacific Ocean and do not affect navigation or agriculture, operating permits from the California Debris Commission are not required. There is a measure of restriction there, however, through what is known as the Trinity and Klamath River Fish and Game District. Chap. 215, Stat. 1931, in order to secure relatively clear water for the fishing season, provides that between July 15 and October 15 each year there must not be discharged into these rivers debris that will cause a turbidity greater than a content of 50 parts per million in the

With the Report of Mining Statistics, for the year 1872, there was published a geological map of the United States and Territories. This is, I believe, the only map which represents the geology of Arizona, and is, as far as my observations go, correct. It is, however, on so small a scale as to be of little practical value to the miner. I know of no other maps, even of localities, of this Territory. The topographical maps are also on so small a scale as not even to serve as guides from place to place; the largest, that of Eckhoff and Ricker, being only 30 by 30 inches to represent a territory of 135,000 square miles. For these reasons, it makes it exceedingly difficult to describe the various mining centres in an intelligent manner, and equally so to examine such a hilly country as it is intended to describe in this paper. When I first came into this Territory I soon realized the troubles I had to encounter in trying to form an opinion, or even to get the needed information on the geological contour. I have, therefore, labored as best I could to get a topographical diagram of the section of country represented by the map which accompanies this paper.* The lines run by the Land Department up the valleys of the Aqua Frio, and those west of the Hassayampa, and connected east and west to the north of Prescott, enabled me to inclose correctly the space covered by the Bradshaw and Sierra Prieta mountain groups, but the territory covered by these mountains, and the most difficult part, I have had to fill up as best I could. I have met with such success as to meet the approbation of those most familiar with the country, and, with the map in hand, any one would he able to cross it in any direction. As there has not been a single line of survey made across it, this has been no small undertaking, and I have had to depend upon sights from prominent points with the pocket-compass, or, in the absence of that, to make observations, with watch in hand, and guess as near as possible the meridian direction. The vapor pressure of palladium over a series of Rlz-Pd alloys has been measured by the torsion-effusion method. The thermodynamic properties of the alloy system at 1575=K have been calculated from the vapor pressure data. The activities and the free energies of formation exhibit large positive deviations from ideal behavior. The enthalpies of formation are endother-mic. The entropies of formation are positive and larger than the ideal entropy of mixing. All of the thermodynamic properties suggest that a strong tendency toward phase separation exists in the solid solutions. The possible origin of the phase instability and the various factors that influence the thermodynamic properties are discussed. RECENT studies of the thermodynamic properties of alloys of palladium with nontransition elements have indicated that a significant contribution to the enthalpy of formation is related to the redistribution of the conduction electrons upon alloy formation.'-' The present work was undertaken to ascertain the importance of this contribution in Pd/transition-metal alloys. The Rh-Pd system was chosen for this investigation for several reasons: 1) The thermodynamics of the system were unknown. 2) Rhodium and palladium are completely soluble at high temperatures; below 1118OK the solid solution becomes immiscible.', 3) The difference in magnitude between the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium permitted the use of an existing effusion apparatus. 4) Additional information was known about the alloy system that would facilitate the interpretation of the thermodynamic results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermodynamic properties of the Rh-Pd alloy system were calculated from the vapor pressure of palladium over solid palladium and over several solid Rh-Pd alloys. The vapor pressure was measured by means of the torsion-effusion apparatus that has been described previously. In this method, an effusion cell is suspended from a tungsten filament inside a high-temperature furnace. Two orifices are located eccentrically such that the effusion of the vapor creates a rotational torque in the filament. The angle of rotation is directly related to the total vapor pressure within the cell. As the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium are approximately five orders of magnitude apart," the total vapor pressure was considered to be effectively equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure of palladium. The effusion cells were made from high-purity alumina since auxiliary experiments indicated that essentially no reaction occurs between alumina and solid Rh-Pd alloys. Unfortunately, because the orifices were irregular, an accurate calculation of the Free- man-Searcy correction factors" could not be made. The constants were determined in an independent experiment where the vapor pressure of copper, as measured in the alumina cell, was compared with an accurate value of the vapor pressure, which had been determined previously.4 Depletion of palladium from the surfaces of the specimens was minimal as the deflection of the cell remained constant, for at least 15 minutes, at each of the experimental temperatures. Lattice parameter measurements of the postrun alloys also indicated that no changes in the composition of the surfaces had occurred. The alloys were prepared by arc melting the requisite amounts of the 99.99 pct pure elements. The four most palladium-rich alloys were remelted in a levita-tion furnace since complete melting of the components had not occurred in the arc furnace. All of the alloys were subsequently homogenized at elevated temperatures in sealed alumina thimbles. After heat treatment, the alloys were analyzed chemically and were in essential agreement with the nominal compositions. The thermal histories and nominal compositions of the alloys are given in Table I. Lattice parameters of the heat-treated alloys were computed, by means of the method described by Mueller et a1. ,I2 from X-ray diffraction powder patterns obtained with filtered copper radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera. The results, which are tabulated in Table I, exhibit a slightly greater negative deviation from Vegards' law than the values reported by Raub et al.13 The diffraction lines were sharp and well-resolved and thus indicated that the alloys were homogenous. RESULTS The logarithms of the individual values of the vapor pressure of palladium were fit, by the least-squares method, as a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperatures. The constants of the equations are given in Table I along with the temperature range over which the data was accumulated. The latent heat of vaporization at 298.15"K for pure palladium, calculated by the third-law method,14 showed no systematic temperature dependence. The average value of 88,920 * 20 cal per g-atom agrees favorably with the average of the results obtained in the most reliable previous investigations.15"19 The activities of palladium were computed from the vapor pressure data at 1525', 1575", and 1625OK. Consistent with the mass spectrometric study of the atomicity of palladium vapor,lg the vapor was assumed to be monoatomic. The activities of rhodium were determined by integrating the Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the a function.20 In the calculations, the activities of the pure solid metals were assigned the value of unity. From the activities, the partial and integral free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of formation at 1575° K were computed; they are assembled in Table 11.
