STATE geological surveys have had an interesting development in this country. They first appeared more than a hundred years ago. The fact that they have persisted and are now an important part of most state governments indicates the basic need for state departments con-cerned with mineral problems. The number of state surveys in 1941 (43) is at an all-time high, as is the aggre¬gate appropriation for their support for the fiscal year 1940-'41 ($1,600,708). The first surveys, those of North and South Carolina (see Fig. 1), made their appearance in 1820-'30, but neither survived that period. During the next two decades surveys were created in twenty states, but only three survived. In fact, it was not until the decade 1900-'10, when eighteen surveys were created and only five abolished, that these agencies became firmly established.

IN order to have ore available on the completion of the beneficiation plant at Clifton and to provide for continuous production while underground development was carried out, it was decided to develop an open-pit through the crest of a long hill in which the ore outcropped, using 40-ft. vertical benches.

Low metal prices prevailing at the beginning of 1950 stimulated the search for improved mining methods. More experience was gained during the year with such new developments as the jackleg drill, millisecond delays as applied underground, trackless mining, and Diesel powered equipment. One of the outstanding innovations in mining practice was the starting of the Round Mountain "dry land gold dredging operation." The Government is now inviting the mining industry to open up every available source of new metal supply and this circumstance will undoubtedly speed the development of new machines. New methods will also result but it is doubtful if economic efficiency will be at its peak.

(Washington Meeting, May, 1905.) SEVERAL years ago, Mr. Robert A. Cook described and illustrated in our Transactions 1 a mechanical coke-drawer, patented in 1891 by Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliff Iron Works, Sheffield, England, and first introduced in the United States in, 1896, at the coking-plant of the Latrobe Coal Co., Latrobe, Pa. This machine has not received any very extended application in this country, although it was successfully used in two places for a number of years. The present. paper describes a new and simpler machine, containing few wearing-parts capable of withstanding continued rough usage. Anything which tends to prolong the general use of bee-hive ovens will be welcome to those who are interested in cheapen¬ing the cost of producing coke in such ovens, especially if it provides satisfactory mechanical means, replacing the hard labor involved in drawing coke by hand with the old-fashioned ?duck bill.? The difficulty of finding efficient coke-drawers, especially during the summer season, and in the South, is notorious. Yet, notwithstanding the great improvements that have been made in retort coke-ovens, new bee-hive ovens are continually constructed; and a machine which will successfully compete with hand-drawing, and, at the same time, add to the efficiency of the bee-hive oven, seems to deserve notice. The machine here described was put in operation at the Frick Coal and Coke Co.'s plant, known as Continental No. 1, at Uniontown, Pa., in October, 1904, and is reported to have met successfully all the tests to which it has been subjected. The purpose of this technical note is to briefly present some data on a phenomenon—recrystallization with concurrent deformation—that has been found to occur in a plutonium. This phenomenon is unusual because a plutonium is considered brittle, not easily deformed, and not easily recrystallized; the a phase is simple monoclinic having 8 atoms per unit cell and it is stable below about 115°C. The properties of the recrystallized metal were different from the as-cast metal. Even though a plutonium is difficult to deform, Ianniello successfully rolled it' and he also observed some recrystallization at 120°C.2 Pavlick and Hanson3 detected some recovery at 109°C but they observed no recrystallization. Gardner4 and Bronisz5 studied the compression properties up to 100°C but they did not report having seen recrystallization. In the present deformation studies of electrorefined plutonium pronounced recrystallization took place concurrently with plastic deformation in compression between 24" and 115°C. The metal contained less than 300 ppm total impurities with the major impurities being 100 ppm Am, 30 ppm C, 40 ppm W, and 25 ppm U; all other impurities totaled less than 100 ppm. The compression specimens were machined to dimensions of 1.2 cm long and 0.8 cm diam from as-cast rods having a density of 19.65 g per cu cm. They were heated to the test temperature in a high-temperature silicone fluid that was evacuated to 10-4 Torr. With this procedure the specimens oxidized a negligible amount, and the temperature was maintained within ±0.2°C for times up to 3 weeks. Deformation and recrystallization

Extensive solid solubilities of CdTe (zincblende-type struckre) and InTe (B37 type) in each of the rock salt-type compounds, PbTe and SnTe, have been observed. Partial phase diagrams have been determined by thermal analysis and X-ray metallography. The limiting mol fraction. X,, of the solute in the rock salt-type a phase and the corresponding eutectic temperatures, T,, are: (PbTe)l-x(CdTe)x: X,- 0.2, T, =866°C; (PbTe),-,(lnTe),: X, - 0.35, T, = 646"C; (SnTe),-,(CdTe),:X,- 0.11, T, = 784 "C; (SnTe),-,(lnTe),: X,-0.53, T, = 630°C. The lattice parameters of the a phase decrease linearly with X, even in (PbTe),-,(CdTe),, where a, (CdTe) = 6.481A > %(PbTe) = 6.459A. This is taken as proof that the cadmium atom enters an octahedral interstice of the tellurium atom sublattice; i.e., the formation of the a phase entails the direct replacement of lead by cadmium. The a, us X curve extrapolates to 6.16A at X = 1, in agreement with the value predicted for an ionic crystal of CdTe; it is also consistent with the reported lattice parameter It is well-established that the compositions of intrinsic semiconducting and semimetallic compounds conform to normal valence rules.1"5 The apparent exceptions can be explained by taking account of anion-anion covalences, as in CdSb, or of multiple cation valences, as in In Te.'This empirical generalization is the basis of the chemical approach to semiconductors2 by which the properties of an intrinsic semiconductor are rationalized in terms of the ionic-covalent bonds necessary to saturate the valence-electron complement of the anion sublattice. A fundamental shortcoming of this approach is its disregard of long-range crystal interactions. It cannot, accordingly, deal with the phenomenon of charge conduction except through the use of ad hoc postulates. As an example, a crystal of CdTe would, in the valence-bond picture: be described in terms of electron pairs, each with the same discrete energy, localized between every cadmium and tellurium atom. This is, of course, contrary to the Pauli of the high-pressure rock-salt form of CdTe, corrected for decompression from 36 kbar. The free energy of formation of the a phase of pure CdTe at room temperature is calculated from the phase diagram to be +10 kcal per g-atom, in accmd with the value calculated from the transformation pressure. The standard enthalpy is +13 kcal per g-atom, and the standard entropy is +9 eu. The latter value implies the formation of extra classical particles, such as vacancies, interstitials, or nondegenerate charge carriers, but these alternatives are not consistent with the semiconducting properties and the densities of the a phase. The extrapolated values of the lattice parameters of (PbTe),-,(lnTe), and Spectively, for the rock salt-type modification of InTe. The corresponding interatomic separation is intermediate between monovalent and trivalent indium. The qualitative implications of the results are considered from the viewpoints of both valence-band theory and energy-band theory. principle, and is corrected by methods of molecular-orbital theory in which bonds are replaced by bands of molecular orbitals whose energies, E, depend upon a crystal-momentum vector, k.7 Each band is derived from a linear combination of atomic orbitals with two electrons required to saturate each molecular orbital in the band. In a crystal of N atoms containing z atoms in its primitive unit cell, there are 2 N/z states per band which lie in a region of k space bound by the Brillouin zone. In an intrinsic semiconductor, the bands can be grouped into valence bands which are normally filled and conduction bands which are normally empty. If the highest valence band and the lowest conduction band overlap anywhere within the Brillouin zone, the material is rendered semimetallic. The quantity defines the effective mass, m*, of an electron in a conduction band (or of a hole, i.e., an electron deficiency, in the valence band) and leads directly to the concept of charge mobility through the relation \x = et/m*, where e is the electron charge and t is the lattice relaxation time.

PORPHYRY mining in the Bisbee district in Arizona did not begin until 1923, though Bisbee had been the scene of profitable copper-mining operations since 1880, and during the interval had contributed roughly 2,000,000,000 lb. of copper to the world's supply. At that time it ranked third among the copper districts of the United States, first place for total production going to Butte, Montana, and second to the district centering around Calumet, Michigan. Bisbee's production had come from the so-called "limestone" mines operated principally by the Phelps Dodge Corporation and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. Each of these companies had a large smelting plant at Douglas, 25 miles southeast of Bisbee on the Mexican border. The town of Douglas owed its existence primarily to the copper mines of Bisbee, the particular location having been determined, first, by the fact that water in adequate supply could be obtained by sinking wells; and, second, by its position about equally distant from Bisbee and the mines in Sonora, Mexico, of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a Phelps Dodge subsidiary. Three partners, Martin, Reilly, and Ballard, conducted the first operations of consequence at Bisbee about 1880; and in 1881 a smelting plant consisting of two 36 in. water-jacketed blast furnaces was erected near by. The ore came from open-cut workings on the later-to-be-famous Queen orebody. The furnace charge is said to have averaged 23 per cent copper-twice as rich as the concentrates from the mills and four times as rich as the smelting ore shipped from Bisbee in recent years. As early as 1881, disputes arose among owners of various claims, and groups of claims, over the ownership of orebodies under the law of apex and extra-lateral rights. 13.6-1. Importance. In Germany there are large tertiary brown coal reserves, most of which are located close to the surface. Therefore, brown coal has been recovered for many years by means of opencast methods. By utilizing a high degree of technology, a rational operation has been achieved, and as a result, the mining techniques have become renowned all over the world. After the war, all the dredgers and overburden spreaders, as well as the means of conveyance, had to be redeveloped for adapting this equipment to the changing conditions of the deposits. Numerous auxiliary machines were adopted from the American earth moving industry and altered according to the different requirements. As a result of such technical developments, the output per man and per shift was increased remarkably in spite of the deterioration of the geological conditions. In the whole of Germany, the total reserves of brown coal amount to 100 billion metric tons, of which 60 billion tons are situated in the Federal Republic of Germany. In the latter area, 8.5 billion tons will be recover- able by opencast means, of which 3.5 billion tons are already developed. The annual output reached 102 million tons in 1965. This total figure comes from four different mining districts: Rhineland, Helmstedt (town at the border of the Soviet occupied zone), Hesse, and Bavaria. AN observation by Squires, Weiner, and phillipsl has stimulated interest in a mechanism of deformation at high temperature (above -0.5 of the absolute melting point) that is not usually thought to be involved in the creep of metals. They found precipitate-free or "denuded" zones along grain boundaries normal to the stress axis in tensile specimens of a hydrided Mg-1/2 wt pct Zr alloy after slow straining at 450° and 500°C. Their suggestion that the zones were a result of directional diffusion of magnesium atoms was supported with calculations from Harris and Jones2 which also tended to identify the process as Nabarro-Herring (N-H) creep3,4—a process that is characterized by Newtonian viscosity, with stress (o) directly proportional to strain rate (C), and one that proceeds by lattice diffusion. Material transport by diffusion along grain boundaries is an alternative basis for Newtonian viscosity, as demonstrated by Coble,5 and is favored over N-H creep for fine grain size and lower temperature.6 In either case, the strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, defined as m = d log o/d log E (which commonly appears in the empirical a = KEW), is unity. The experiments to be described here gave metallo-graphic indications of diffusional creep which were no less clear than those just cited, but the associated m (as measured by the method of Ref. 7) was much more like that of a Bingham material. For true Bingham behavior, (a — ao) E, where oo is an initial yield stress. Therefore, even if flow after yielding should occur by diffusional transport, m must increase from 0 as < is raised to reach unity only in the limit as One result is that the resistance to tensile necking conferred by Newtonian viscosity is lost, which would become increasingly apparent through the formation of more sharply defined necks as 6 is lowered. That trend appeared in these experiments. Most of the work was done on an extremely finegrained alloy of magnesium with -6 wt pct Zn and ½ wt pct Zr (Mg ZK60); the initial mean-intercept grain diameter, L, was 0.55 µ. Shown in Fig. l(a) is a germanium-shadowed carbon replica of the surface of a specimen that was coated with silicone oil,* heated to 270°C under a helium atmosphere, and then stretched locally -200 pct at an initial E = 3.3 x 10-5 sec-1. Experimental work on the properties of high-purity alloys of the copper-man-ganese-zinc system has necessarily required extensive metallographic work to determine the equilibrium conditions in this system. Previous work on these alloys is fragmentary and, unfortunately, based on alloys made with impure grades of manganese, thus introducing significant amounts of iron, silicon, aluminum and carbon. Since these elements are known to affect equilibrium conditions, it became desirable to re-examine these alloys made from the pure metals. The alpha solid solution field was of particular interest and, therefore, was chosen for the initial work, which was outlined to determine the composition limits of this field. Previous Work Heuslerl conducted an extensive survey of the liquid-solid regions of this system and also made an estimate of the solid-phase boundaries at 340°C. The pertinent part of his diagram is given in Fig. I, but it is of limited usefulness, since it applied to a single temperature only and is based on impure alloys under admittedly nonequilib- rium conditions. Bauer and Hansen,2 likewise working with impure alloys, have determined the phase boundaries for alpha-beta brasses containing small amounts of manganese and indicate an increase in the extent of the alpha field with increasing manganese. This is not in accordance with Heusler or with data obtained on pure alloys.3 They also described a third constituent precipitating in the alpha plus beta field below 350&apos; to 400°C. but did not identify this constituent. Guillet4 and Heike and Ledibur6 have also noted this precipitate. Each of these investigators recognized that impurities present in the manganese could and did have an effect on the structure and properties of their alloys. Corson6 in particular pointed out the hardening effects of silicon, aluminum, and carbon in copper-manganese alloys and Heusler reported that his alloys containing more than 25 per cent manganese were extremely brittle. In all probability this brittleness was due to the impurities present. This early work, therefore, should be taken as a general guide for preliminary studies only, and high-purity alloys may be expected to produce different results. The work of the Bureau of Mines laboratories with electrolytic manganese has been briefly summarized by Dean7 but includes only a short section on this system. Later work3 outlined a limited portion of the alpha field in the neighborhood of 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, and 25 per cent zinc. The present work was under-

PRIOR to 1912 the only rail outlets for a large part of the coal regions of Carbon and Emery Counties. Utah, were over single-track lines of the Southern Utah R.R. and Castle Valley Ry. Companies, forming a route extending from Mohrland and Hiawatha, Utah, to a point of connection at Price, Utah, with what is now The Denver and Rio Grande Western R.R. Co. These two tap lines were poorly and inadequately constructed, with impracticable grades, lacking in equipment, and incapable of being put into condition to serve this region and handle the output of the mines, to say nothing of making possible increased production and new development. Any plans for the new development and increased output necessarily involved new and adequate railroad service. It was essential, not only that additional facilities be provided but that these facilities be in the form of an efficient and up-to-date railroad providing an independent through operation from the coal mines to a point of direct connection with the lines over which the product would be distributed to consumers. Mr. Tays (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Wynne&apos;s criticism of my paper* brings forward a few points which are really important, and might properly have been considered in the original paper. By calling attention to them he has rendered me a service. It is quite true, as Mr. Wynne says, that, in the tests reported by me, the Bryan mill was always working at a relative disadvantage, and my comparison of the work of this mill with that of the stamp-battery should be interpreted, therefore, so much the more favorably to the mill. Of course, wire screens can be used to advantage on the Bryan mill, if they are not of smaller size than 30-mesh; but

THE technical material in hand and the plans under way for the 141st meeting of the Institute clearly indicate a well-rounded program of unusual excellence. The meeting will be held in the Engineering Societies Building, Feb. 15 to 18, and while it is too early to announce definitely the time of the various sessions much of the detail has been organized up to that point. Every group in the Institute membership will find much of special interest, and several features should prove generally attractive. The various committees in charge of the lighter side of the meeting are hard at work to emulate the standard established last February In this connection and in this paragraph it will suffice to say-there will be a Smoker-dinner! The Committee on Mining Methods plans two sessions for which these papers are in prospect:

The laminarturbulent transition was studied for monodisperse rigid polymer latices as functions of particle diameter and concentration at several tube diameters. Breaks in the graph of friction factor US Reynolds number were used to characterize the transition; rates of shear were sufficiently high so that Newtonian behavior at the high shear limiting viscosity could be assumed. No abnormal behavior was noted at concentrations below 30 volume percent. At higher concentrations, suppression of turbulence was observed with critical Reynolds numbers rising to as high as 5,500 at 50 volume percent. No definite effect on the transition was noted due to variation of particle size or tube diameter. The type of surfactant used to stabilize the latex was found to have an important influence on the critical Reynolds number. INTRODUCTION For some polymer solutions and solid-in-liquid suspensions, the transition from laminar behavior to turbulence in pipeline flow has been reported to take place at unusually low1-5 and in some cases at higher than normal6,7 critical Reynolds numbers. Extreme values of critical Reynolds numbers (NRe*) have been found to range from 1 to 6,000, as opposed to the values of 2,000 to 3,500 which are obtained for ordinary liquids. Observations have also been reported of drag reduction in fully developed turbulent flow, i.e., a decreased value of the friction factor in the Reynolds number-friction factor plot6*10-14 in colloidal and polymeric fluids. In some cases, turbulence suppression (unusually large values of Nre*) was noted to occur preceding the drag reduction,6 while a normal transition was noted in other cases of drag reduction.14 To relate the occurrence of turbulence suppression and drag reduction to the molecular or particulate structure of the fluid, it is desirable to characterize the structural variables with some precision. For most colloidal dispersions and polymeric fluids, this is very difficult; particle sizes, shapes and stiffnesses may vary over wide ranges in the same sample. Recently, however, a colloidal fluid has become available which consists of rigid spherical particles of highly uniform diameter dispersed in a simple Newtonian liquid. These are monodisperse polymer latices, prepared by carefully controlled emulsion polymerization reactions. The purpose of this research was to study the transition to turbulence in these well-characterized colloidal fluids as a function of concentration, particle diameter and tube diameter. Typical flow curves of latices of high solids content are shown in Fig. 1. While these curves were obtained with monodisperse latices, the general shape of the curve is also typical of a polydisperse latex. It is observed that a shear-thinning region occurs for low to moderate rates of shear. At sufficiently high shearing rates a limiting Newtonian viscosity is reached. The viscosity µ diminishes with decreasing volume fraction 4 at all shear rates. Most lead-zinc mines worldwide have moved to further mechanized techniques to boost productivity, improve safety, and lower costs. The mining session, chaired by S. C. Fall, NL. Industries, and C. J. Beattie, Callahan Mining Co., reviewed mining methods at five operations in the US, Australia, Peru, and Japan. Where massive sulfide-type and irregular ore bodies are encountered, resourceful operators have modified and varied the mining method with the localized ore zones. In all cases, mechanization of operations has registered gains in productivity.
