This paper presents the results of a series of experiments made in the metallurgical laboratory of Columbia University, New Pork City. The object of the investigation was to determine, as far as possible, the changes in micro-structure and physical properties caused by short periods of heat-treatment and the longer malleable cast-iron process. It was proposed to do this by means of micro-photographs, heating- and cooling-curves, and tensile tests after the various heat-treatments. I. Micro-Constituents of Iron and Steel. The list of the micro-constituents of iron and steel has grown till now it includes seven different substances, called ferrite, cementite, pearlite,* martensite, austenite, sorbite and troosite. Only the first five of these are mentioned in this paper, to facilitate the understanding of which, the following brief definitions are given: 1. Ferrite (named by Prof. Howe) is, chemically, iron free from carbon. It is the softest of the constituents, and is not colored by etching, except when long-continued. Under the microscope it is easily determined by its regular polygonal etructure; or, if structureless, as in malleable cast-iron, by the ease with which it is scratched. Ferrite appears in mild steel in small amount, in grey cast-iron, and in malleable cast-iron. 2. Cementite (also named by Prof. Howe) is now generally conceded to have the formula Fe3C. It is the hardest of the micro-constituents, having the hardness indicated by 7 of the mineralogical scale; and hence it is always left in relief after

TO measure the absolute conductivity of metallic specimens it is generally necessary to have exact geometrical shapes and good electrical contact with the test-piece. To overcome limitations of the standard methods, an electronic conductivity-meter* Trade name, Sigmatest; model Dr. F. Forster; Reutlingen, Ger-many. has been developed, which works on the principle of inducing high frequency eddy-currents in the specimens and measuring the reaction of these curients on a measuring coil.',' To attach the instrument to the test specimen, a flat area of about 10 mm diam is all that is necessary. The reading is taken off a scale calibrated in pet of International Annealed Copper Standard. The induced eddy-currents are propagated in a circular motion parallel to the surface. Thickness of the layer included in a measurement depends on the frequency used. With a frequency of 60 kc per sec, the penetration of the currents was 0.8 mm at the upper limit of the scale, and 2 mm at the lower limit. The method is limited to nonferrous metals and other applications have been described elsewhere." The object of the present investigation was to detect the formation and growth of surface layers of differing conductivity, and to determine the depth to which these changes could be observed. A well known phenomenon which illustrates the problem is the internal oxidation of certain silver alloys containing base metal solutes, such as copper or cadmium, when they are annealed in an oxidizing atmosphere.4, 5 Until now, the only methods available for following these phenomenon have been metallo-graphic examination and hardness tests.0, 7 Changes in mechanical properties of copper alloys by internal oxidation were recently discussed in a more general way by Martin and Smith." When measuring these conductivity changes it must be remembered that the only absolute values of conductivity are those of 1) the nontreated homogeneous specimen, and 2) the final values obtained with a surface layer of depth comparable to the penetration of the eddy-currents. All intermediate values refer to the mixed conductivities of the transformed surface layer and the untransformed alloy, and are thus readings of relative value only. Experimental Results Specimens were annealed for 1/2 hr at 800°C in hydrogen, and the internal oxidation was carried out by thermal treatment in air at 800°C. Fig. 1 shows the results of the first series of experiments. With internal oxidation of a solid solution of 8 pet Cd in silver, the conductivity rises continuously until the surface layer formed has become thick enough to be the deciding factor (about 400µ). Precipitates of CdO are mainly in the form of points, Fig. 2, and, as a result, the electric contact between the silver crystals is not distorted by them. Brine11 tests were run with a 1.25 mm ball and a 7.812 kg load. The specimen annealed in hydrogen and oxidized to a depth of 400µ had a hardness of 40 Bhn,

INTRODUCTION Conditions for formation of porphyry copper deposits appear to have been propitious in the Appalachian orogen from the end of Precambrian into Middle Ordovician, and again from Middle Devonian into Mississippian. In the Appalachians we can now record the evolution of a porphyry copper province within a developing orogen, one that reached metamorphic and structural maturity by the end of Devonian. Fig. 15, after Irwin and Coleman (1972), locates that portion of the Appalachian orogen included in this study, and Fig. 16 illustrates general geology of the area. Deposits mentioned in Table 3 and in the text are shown in Fig. 16. Data presented summarize personal observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas noted in the bibliography, and abstracts from Provincial assessment files. Sources of previously published data are acknowledged. Few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits in this area exist, so much of the data presented is new to the literature. Porphyry mineralization has, for this chapter, been restricted to porphyry copper de- posits, although porphyry molybdenum de- posits (Clark, 1972) are also shown in Fig. 16 (Hollister, et al., 1974). Copper- molybdenum and tungsten-molybdenum skarns are also omitted to simplify discu sion, though each is known in the area studied. Gaspe Copper is included, however; min- eralization in this deposit is present in the intrusion as well as in the skarn adjacent (Bell and Scott, 1954). Porphyry deposits listed in Table 3 are included because of some important feature, although other deposits have been reported (e.g., Kirkham and Soregaroli, 1975 ) . Clearly, no table now compiled could be complete. The pace of exploration insures that new occurrences will probably be found. Summaries of features exhibited by intrusions shown in Table 3 should remain valid, however, since they appear representative and are based on an adequate number of deposits in the area studied. Paleozoic porphyry copper prospects (shown in Fig. 16) are more common, apparently, in the northeastern part of the orogen, rarely having been found south of Catheart or west of the Logan Line. Occurrences of molybdenum and other associated lithophile elements are, however, known to the south and west as well as further north. Killeen and Newman (1965), King (1970),

IT is known that pearlite forms from austenite by a process of nucleation and growth, and that the rate of formation of pearlite may be described by a rate of nucleation and a rate of growth.1,2 The manner in which these two quantities operate to produce the observed isothermal reaction curve has been analyzed in a paper published in 1939.3 Two types of process were described: (1) that in which nucleation occurs at the grain boundaries of the parent phase, with the nodules growing toward the centers of the grains, initially as hemi¬spheres and then after impingement as roughly radial-columnar structures; and (2) that in which nucleation occurs generally, with the nodules growing to full spheres until impingement with other growing nodules restricts growth. Both cases are met in the formation of pearlite from austenite (Fig. 1);2.4 the former, occurring near the knee of the S-curve has been named "grain-boundary transformation," and the latter, occurring at temperatures near Ae1, has been named "group-nodule transformation." In developing our knowledge of the factors that determine the rate of formation of pearlite from austenite, it is important 1,2 to obtain data on the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth of pearlite. Such data, when obtained near the knee of the S-curve, will furnish information of use in understanding the factors that affect hardenability; when obtained at higher temperatures, such data will be useful in understanding the behavior of steels that during heat-treatment react to pearlite.2 It is the purpose of this paper to present data on the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth of pearlite in dependence upon composition, grain size, temperature, and the degree of homogeneity of the parent austenite. The studies are restricted chiefly to plain carbon commercial steels.* PREVIOUS DATA ON RATE OF NUCLEATION AND RATE OF GROWTH Data on the rate of nucleation and the rate of growth of pearlite have been published by Scheil and Lange-Weise,5 by Mirkin and Blanter,6,7 by Mehl,1 and by Dorn, De Garmo and Flanigan.2 It is difficult to interpret the data, for in most cases too little information is given on austenitizing temperatures and times, the state of homogeneity of the austenite (presence or absence of carbide, etc.), austenite grain size, and mode of formation of pearlite at the temperatures given.

THE object of this investigation was to compare the arsenical antimony-lead alloy with some of the regular bearing-metal alloys. With this end in view, the following tests were made: 1. Chemical analyses to show the composition. 2. Thermal analyses. 3. Macroscopic examination of fractures. 4. Microscopic examination. 5. Tensile tests. 6. Crushing tests. 7. Scleroscope tests. 8. Brinell tests, at temperatures from 80° to 400° F. Tests 3 to 8 were conducted on both sand-cast and chill-cast specimens. For the purposes of this paper the alloys have been numbered from 1 to 6; their composition is as follows: LEAD, ANTIMONY, TIN, COPPER, ARSENIC, NUMBER PER CENT. PER CENT. PER CENT. PER CENT. Studies have been undertaken to determine the indicidual effects of particle size, degree of long-range ovder, antiphase domain size, and root mean square stran on the microhardness and yield strength of ordered alloys. Dnta have been analyzed for Cu3Pt initzally ordered to a value of 0.82 and after deformations of 1 and 6 pct. It was observed that deformation fleatly reduced the degree of long-range order. Furtherrnore, wztkin this range of relatively small deforntntlons, the average particle size changed very little while the antiphase domain size was greatly reduced. Smultaneosly, the mcrohardness changed by a factor of two durzng the deforrtation process. PREVIOUS studies have reported some of the effects of cold work on the broadening of X-ray diffraction peaks. These investigations were performed on powder and wire samples representing both ordered and disordered states; i.e., the specimens were initially studied in a severly cold-worked condition. By comparing the difference in line shape between the annealed and cold-worked peaks, fundamental information was obtained concerning particle size, strain distribution in different crystallographic directions, degree of long-range order, and change in antiphase domain size. Considerable theoretical work has been done concerning the analysis of diffraction data obtained from cold-worked metals. Stokes' expressed the change in diffraction profiles in terms of Fourier coefficients. Much of the work in this area has been summarized by warren2 in an extensive review article concerning the analysis of plastic deformation by X-ray diffraction. Cohen and Bever3 applied these techniques in studying the effects of cold work on alloy systems exhibiting long-range order. They utilized the Fourier coefficients of fundamental peaks in conjunction with those of the superlattice peaks to determine the change in antiphase domain size. Little work of this nature has been reported for ordered systems that have undergone small degrees of plastic deformation. The purpose of this investiga-tion was to determine the effects of small deformations in such a material with respect to particle size, strain distribution in various crystallographic directions, antiphase domain size, degree of long-range order, and hardness. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE CusPt was used for the initial investigation since the order-disorder transformation takes place with- out a change in crystal structure. The transformation is readily detectable via X-ray diffraction techniques due to the large difference in the scattering factors of copper and platinum. Additionally, the alloy is relatively low melting (approximately 1300°C) and is easily deformable in both the ordered and disordered states. 1) Specimen Preparation and Cold Working. A 100-g, 12-in. diam., cylindrical specimen of Cu3Pt was prepared by melting and casting 99.99 pct pure Cu and Pt i.n vacuo. Prior to any mechanical working, the material was homogenized in a vacuum for 60 hr at 100O0C, and surface defects were removed by machining to a depth of approximately 116 of an in. The material was then cold-rolled, with an intermediate anneal, into a strip approximately 12 in. wide by 14 in. thick. Straightening and flattening removed another 0.025 in. from the thickness. After a recrystallization treatment at 750°C for 30 min, the specimen was slow-cooled from 55OoC, at the rate of 6°C per hr, down to 150°C to induce superlattice formation. This treatment yielded an ASTM grain size of 7 and a degree of long-range order equal to 0.83 0.06. After obtaining X-ray and Knoop hardness data, the sample was cold-rolled approximately 0.75 pct in one pass through a hand-operated jewelers' mill. X-ray and hardness data were again obtained and the specimen was reduced an additional 5.41 pct in a single pass through the mill. 2) X-Ray Measurements. The specimen was examined in the ordered condition and after the two degrees of cold working previously mentioned using a General Electric XRD-5 unit equipped with a spectrometer and scintillation counter. Using Mo-Ka radiation with a zirconium filter, six orders of the 100 reflection were obtained. It was anticipated that point counting would be necessary for an accurate determination of the low-intensity peaks and tails: however, it was demonstrated that, by using a scanning speed of 0.2 deg per min and the appropriate time constant, the recorded data were sufficiently accurate. Thus, for ease of experimental procedure, all peaks were recorded on chart paper. Specimen position in the holder was considered to be insignificant after making a series of measurements of the same peak area in different positions with respect to the beam. Since peak overlapping did occur at high values of 20, it was necessary to separate the peaks graphically prior to analyzing the data in order to minimize this source of error. The peak tails were also carefully drawn to obtain the best possible data. Fourier coefficients of the line profiles were calculated on an IBM 7072 computer, and graphical meth-ods2j3 were employed in analyzing the results. For this type of calculation, in which the line profile is represented by intensities taken at set intervals, the intervals selected must be sufficiently small to give an accurate representation of the line profile. The experiments herein described were carried on in 1908-9 by- the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coalmines, a subject which is engaging the attention of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been 011 the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and a very great increase in the amount of explosive used. This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a " pay" of two weeks, while within the memory of men still active, one keg (25 Ib.) would last two men for a " pay." So great has the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. The heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,' and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The values for tensile strength have been converted from tons per square inch to pounds per square inch. Figs. 3 and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700' C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, howevcr, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600' or 700' C. and quenched. EXPERIMENTAL work on the concentration and agglomeration of low-grade iron ores was started many years ago at the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota by E. W. Davis and his staff. From these laboratory results and the work of 0. G. Lellep, consultant for the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., there were indications that the use of a downdraft continuous- grate furnace, patterned from a conventional-type sintering machine, would be practical. Consequently, a pilot plant was designed and constructed by the joint efforts of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. and Arthur G. McKee & Co. at Carrollville, Wis. Several years of work resulted in plans to build a large-scale pilot plant for commercial application. Such a pilot plant, built at Babbitt, Minn., by the Reserve Mining Co., was designed to produce 1000 tpd. Sufficient metallurgical and operating data were accumulated to permit the successful application to the design of a commercial plant of any desired capacity. Based upon this data, a pelletizing plant having a 3 ¾ million ton per year capacity was erected by the Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, Minn. and started operation in October, 1955. Provisions were made in the design to permit future expansion to a capacity of 10 million tons per year.

THE work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and Glocker;1 Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45° to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (113)[112], (001)[100], and a combination of (110)[115] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,6 who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. TEST MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT For this investigation, one commercial heat of 68-32 brass was cast in the form of bars for cold-rolling, 13 ½ in. wide and 1 ½ in. thick. The analysis was as follows: 68.83 per cent copper, 0.04 per cent lead, 0.01 per cent iron, 31.12 per cent zinc (by difference). The bars were so processed to the final thickness, 0.020 in., as to obtain on this thickness all possible combinations of the variables listed below except those involving the sequence of 84 per cent penultimate reduction and 84 per cent final reduction: I. Penultimate reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent and 84 per cent; 2. Penultimate anneals at 800°, 900°, 1050° and 1200°F.; 3. Final reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent, 69 per cent and 84 per cent;

ARTHUR H. STORRS, Scranton, Pa.-I would like to ask whether this same process is applicable to bituminous coal? FELLS A. VOGEL, New York, N. Y.-This Dutch process is applicable to bituminous or any other kind of coal. The Berwind Fuel Co. has had a plant in operation, in Superior, Wis., for about 2 years, using the Dutch process, and it has made a very satisfactory briquette, using Pocahontas coal. There is just one item in Mr. Frey's paper I would like to discuss; that is, the matter of cost. Mr. Frey figures a total cost of $3.35, based on the use of 7 per cent. of oil. Of course, the price of oil has advanced seriously within the last year or two, and any possible reduction in the percentage of oil required in the manufacture of briquettes is very important. I believe that Mr. Frey will agree that very good briquettes can be made with considerably less than 7 per cent. of oil; in fact, actual experience has shown that it can be clone with less than 5 per cent. The only possible effects of a low percentage of oil, particularly in anthracite briquettes, are that the briquette might not burn so freely, and that it might not be quite so hard. Briquettes made by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., using 7 per cent. of binder, are extremely tough. Those briquettes have been handled in one of the local yards in Brooklyn, chuting them from railroad cars into boats and digging them out by grab buckets, and the losses average less than 2 per cent. This compares very favorably with domestic anthracite coal, with which the losses from breakage amount to between 7 and 10 per cent.

In most published discussions and theories of in situ combustion, the combustion fronts are assumed to be vertical. However, evidence from field tests leaves no doubt that combustion fronts often advance more rapidly along the top than near the bottom of a formation as a result of difference in density between injected air and formation liquids. The approximation proposed in this paper to determine the movement of the resultant tilted combustion surfaces states that the vertical rate of movement of combustion surfaces is proportional to the horizontal oxygen flux. Where self-ignition is possible, the proposed method demands that a secondary combustion surface exist around production wells which produce some oxygen. These secondary combustion surfaces may be formed long before the primary combustion surface can advance from injection to production wells. Heat liberated near production wells at these secondary combustion surfaces can contribute to an early increase in production rate. Results indicate that significant oil recoveries cannot be obtained from the usual flood patterns (five-spots, seven-spots, etc.) without producing large volumes of unused oxygen. Ideally, to increase oxygen- consumption efficiency, well patterns should allow oil production from a first line of production wells and gas production from more distant lines of producers. However, it may be desirable to produce some gas at all wells to support (and benefit from) active secondary combustion surfaces. Results indicate that the well spacing through which combustion can be advanced is larger than that predicted by other methods. A large number of production wells may still be desirable to take quick advantage of gravity drainage. From a comparison with results at South Belridge field, California, it appears that this method adequately describes oxygen concentration and temperature histories and combustion-front shapes. However, this method does not accurately locate the most advanced point of the combustion surface. There is some field evidence to substantiate the actual presence of secondary combustion surfaces at South Belridge. Use of the proposed method appears warranted at this time when lay-over of the combustion surface can be anticipated. INTRODUCTION The assumption of vertical combustion fronts has been embodied in all previous publicationsl-6 which use the movement of combustion fronts away from injection wells to determine the temperature and fluid distributions in the reservoir. The only paper concerned with a mathematical model of the combustion process in which a nonvertical combustion front is used was written by Gottfried.11 Actually, nonvertical combustion fronts have been observed in most in situ combustion field tests for which adequate data are available.7, 8, 6 In practice, the typical vertical extent of the burned zone decreases with distance from the injection well, and this burned zone is at or near the top of the sand body. In some cases, such as at South Belridge field near Taft, Calif., the combustion surface is almost horizontal over a very large area.8 Thus, for some years an obvious and serious gap has existed between theory (vertical fronts) and practice (tilted fronts). This is indicated in Fig. 1. Tilted combustion fronts such as observed at South Belridge8 sometimes result from the natural tendency of injected gases to rise to the top of an oil sand. An initially present gas cap, even if thin, would make apparent the effect of gravity segregation from the first, particularly since formations considered for in situ combustion field operations are generally selected for their

This paper presents a method for obtaining the correct values of the breakthrough sweep efficiency of the staggered line drive, taking into account the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. Results obtained were different from those previously published, which were obtained by using an inexact shape of the breakrhrough streamline. INTRODUCTION In Section 9.31 of Muskat's' The Flow of Hotnogeticous Fluids Through Porous Media, it is stated that in a staggered line drive flood "the streamline of highest average velocity [is] the line of centers between input and output wells" (see Fig. I). Muskat used this concept to determine the relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the geometry of the staggered line drive pattern. Although it is clear from symmetry considerations that the breakthrough streamline passes through the midpoint between input and output wells, it is equally clear, as shown in Fig. 239 of Ref. 1, that the breakthrough streamline is not represented very well by the straight line joining the input and output wells. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the proper relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the pattern geometry by using the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. METHOD OF SOLUTION It was found that the effect of the geometry of the staggered line drive on the breakthrough sweep efficiency can be investigated easily by making use of the method developed in Ref. 2. With this method, it can be shown that the general complex potential for the staggered line drive, which can be considered as a rectangular five-spot, is given in the coordinate system of Fig. 1, by O(z) = In cn(z\m) = +(x,y) + i $(x, y) . (1) where z = x + iy, +(x, y) is the potential distribution and $(x, y) is the stream function. The function cn (zm) is a Jacobian elliptic function of parameter m and has simple zeros at z,. = (2n + 1) K + 21iK and simple poles at z, = 2nK + (21 + 1)iK. Thus, the complex potential behaves like a(z) = ln(z - zr.) in the neighborhood of the production wells and behaves like a(z) = - ln(z - Z,) in the neighborhood of the injection wells. Electvomotie -force measurements hazle been made on ten Au-Ni alloys at temperatures 7754 825O, 900O, and 935°C using galvanic cells with solid electrolyte. Partial and ivtegral thermodynamic functions are derived from the determined activities. which show la9,ge positive deviations jvom Raoult's law. The enthalpies of mixing- are in close accord with calorinletric data and are of comparable accuracy. The results are used to determine the miscibility gap and the spinoidal curL1e, and are qlalitaticely interpreted in terms of the large size difference and electvonic interactions between gold and nickel. Tabulated nalues of the actielities and partial and inteqal free energies, entropies , and enthalpies of mixing are given in the appendix. The Au-Ni binary alloys are of particular interest thermodynamically as despite the large size difference between gold and nickel atoms they have a simple phase diagram.' This shows complete solid solubility above a miscibility gap with a maximum at about 71 at. pct Ni and 810°C. Activity measurements (over a range of temperature) have been made previously on this system using an electrolytic-cell method with a liquid chloride eletrolyte. The accuracy of this data has, however, been queried3'4 as it leads to values for the enthalpy of mixing which are too high when compared with calorimetric measurements.46 Also, the entropy of mixing is too high when compared with the values derived from specific-heat measrements. It was therefore considered worthwhile redetermining the activity data using a galvanic cell with a solid electrolyte (0.85 ZrO, 0.15 CaO). This method is based on a technique introduced by Kiukkola and aner'' and has been used to determine the thermodynamic data for Cu-Ni alloys.' THE ELECTROLYTIC CELL The cell used to determine the activity of nickel in Au-Ni alloys was: The cell reaction, which is discussed for a similar cell by Rapp and Maak, gives a direct measurement of the activity of nickel in the alloys as where aNi(alloy) is the activity of nickel in the alloy, 3 is Faraday's constant, E is the measured electromotive force, R is the gas constant, and T is absolute temperature. For the valid application of this type of cell the arrangement must be ther modynamic ally stable, which means that: 1) The free energies of formation of the oxides fulfill the relation 2) The vapor pressures or dissociation pressures of each component must be so small that during the time of the experiment the amount of any material transported by the gas is negligible. 3) Side reactions which change the alloy composition must be negligible. These reactions are possible both with the surrounding gas atmosphere and with neighboring solid material. The first two conditions are fulfilled by the above cell.' The third condition is approached by care in the experimental technique. The factors which control the attainment of equilibrium in this type of cell have been considered by Rapp and aak, who conclude that metallic diffusion in the alloy is the rate-control ling step. A lower temperature limit for the practical application of this cell is therefore set by the condition that equilibrium must be attained in reasonable times. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE The starting materials were mint gold (99.99 pct Au) and Mond nickel (99.9 pct Ni). Alloys, nominally 5 at. pct Ni and then each 10 at. pct across the system, were produced by vacuum-levitation melting compacts of mixed drillings of the pure metals. THE writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.1 The copper referred to in his in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the Westinghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 ½ in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of overpoling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.

For mining geologists, the most important trends during 1962 have been the increased concentration of the exploratory activities of American mining companies in the United States and Canada and the greater use of the combined techniques of geology, geophysics and geochemistry in searches over larger areas for wider varieties of metals and minerals. The principal reasons for these changes in approach have been the deterioration of the political-economic climate in many areas of the globe of equal or greater geologic promise and the realization that modern exploration is most efficiently and economically conducted through the use of all available means of detecting ores in areas sufficiently large to raise to a maximum the chances of success. The attitude of certain major U.S. metal-producing companies can be shown by the officially ex- pressed positions of their principal officers. Early in 1962, Clyde E. Weed, Chairman of the Board of Anaconda, remarked that "because of unsettled conditions and disruptive influences in many of the copper-producing areas of the world, it is imperative that domestic copper-producing capacity be improved and made as efficient as possible in order to meet consumer demands at reasonably stable prices." In November, Robert G. Page, President of Phelps Dodge, pointed out that his company is not only concentrating most of its exploratory effort on this continent but is also increasing the number of metals for which it is searching. Frank R. Milliken, President of Kennecott, recently said that "most of our exploration money is going into the northern part of the Western Hemisphere."

The sand and gravel industry is the largest nonfuel mineral industry in the nation. In 1981, the production of sand and gravel totaled 755 million tons valued at $2.3 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 110 million tons, together with Alaska, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm (3 ½ -in.) maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see the chapter on "Silica and Silicon"). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material which is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15-20% water, 7-14% cement, and 66-78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman, 1956). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.003 in.), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Except for the addition of mineral filler, sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement concrete aggregate. General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. Intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift pumping is a variation of the common practice in that the gas is delivered to the well for a short period, called the "on time," followed by a period during which none is admitted, called the "off time," instead of being admitted continuously at a constant rate or by intermittent flowing in which it is occasionally delivered to the well in just sufficient quantity to flow off the accumulated head of fluid. The term "gas" is used throughout this discussion but it should be remembered that in so far as the operation is concerned either air or natural gas may be used. The equipment at the well is the same as commonly used in gas-lift installations and gas may be admitted to either the tubing or the casing. It seldom occurs that all the wells on a lease can be pumped economically by intermittent injection from one header. Wells that have flow characteristics which permit their being handled together have their intake lines grouped at a central compressor station. Well groups may consist of two or more wells. The total volume of gas delivered by each group of compressors goes to one well at a time through a quick opening valve, each well connected to the header receiving its charge of gas in turn. Special cases may require a deviation from this arrangement. The distribution of the gas to the different wells is effected by an automatic timing device which operates quick-opening valves on the intake lines. The timing mechanism may be actuated by electricity, liquid or gas pressure, The essential factor in the operation of the timing mechanism is that as one intake valve is closed another must be opened. Water-operated Timing Device Timing devices operate the intake valves either directly, or indirectly by pilot valves. Of the former type one that is operated by water and has given satisfactory service is shown in Fig. 1 and can be made on the lease. The horizontal cylinder is a piece of 10-in. casing about 7 ft. long, closed at each end and free to oscillate about a fulcrum at the center.

THE process of plastic extension of face-centered cubic single crystal-line rods is so well understood, since the notable studies of Taylor and Elam,1 that the change in orientation of any crystal by slip and rotation may be predicted from the measured elongation. It is customary to assume a very homogeneous deformation, wherein gliding lamellae are free to rotate so that their slip direction continually approaches the axis of the rod, until a second slip system comes into operation; whereupon conjugate slip proceeds quantitatively to an end adjustment with the [112] direction in the axis of the rod. This process has been checked in many face-centered cubic materials and readily permits the preparation of specimens that have been sub-jected to various determinable amounts of shearing action. It is clearly of interest to study in such measurably strained specimens the development of a recrystallized structure on annealing and if possible detect the source of nuclei from which the new crystals grow. Strain-annealing experiments of this character have been performed by others but not in detail sufficient to permit a study, for example, of the number of recrystallized grains vs, the amount of shear. In the experiments now reported, this was done with a wide variety of orientations covering nearly the entire range of slip on a single system and corresponding to amounts of shear (ratio of shearing distance to distance between lamellae) at the conclusion of a test of from 0.08 to 0.57. A particular point was made of determining the crystallite rotation, or small angular range assumed by the octahedral slip plane after these various amounts of shear. The mechanism of recrystallization and the magnitude and effect of recovery on the recrystallization process was investigated.

IN ORDER to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly depends on-the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1).
