In an investigation of various equiatomic alloys of transition elements, Dwightl did not find evidence for the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn. More recently waterstrat2 has reported the occurrence of this structure in the alloy his sample had been homogenized at 1150°C and subsequently reannealed at 725°C after crushing to powder. The purpose of this note is to confirm the existence of the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn and to report a lattice parameter. An equiatomic alloy was prepared by arc-melting under an argon atmosphere vanadium and electrolytic manganese having a purity of at least 99.9 pet. The composition was obtained by charging an excess of manganese and monitoring the weight loss until the stoichiometric composition was achieved; the assumption that the loss during melting was due to the vaporization of manganese appears to be a valid one.' The calculated composition of the sample prepared was 49.85 at. pct V and 50.15 at. pct Mn. Specimens taken from the fractured as-cast buttons were wrapped in molybdenum foil and encapsulated in quartz capsules under vacuum; there was no evidence of a reaction between the alloy and foil. The X-ray patterns were obtained using filtered copper or chromium radiation with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera having a diameter of 114.6 mm. The CrKa radiation is best suited for detecting the superlattice lines since it overcomes the slight difference in scattering powers of the components by making use of the anomalies in atomic scattering factor which occur when the frequency of the radiation is close to the characteristic absorption frequency of one of the elements.394 A specimen in the as-cast condition, as well as one which had been annealed for 1 week at 900°C and water-quenched, gave a diffraction pattern for the disordered bcc solid solution. However, when samples were homogenized at 900°C for 3 weeks followed by a subsequent anneal at 700°C for 6 to 7 weeks and then water-quenched or furnace-cooled, the (loo), (1111, and (210) Ka superlattice lines were observed in films taken with chromium radiation. An ao = 2.904 * 0.001 was determined by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation from a film taken with CuKa radiation. The author wishes to thank Mr. J. W. Downey and Mr. L. J. Natural stone or manufactured porcelain pebbles are used as the grinding elements in pebble mills and the mills are lined with stone or porcelain blocks. Steel balls usually form the grinding medium in ball mills, and the mills may be lined with steel. Pebble mills are used to avoid contamination by metal of the material being ground, to avoid rapid wear due to corrosion, and for other specialized reasons. Belgian silex (silica) blocks formerly were used widely for lining pebble mills, because of their good resistance to wear, light color, and low cost, but the importation of these blocks was suspended early in the war. The stocks of Belgian silex diminished so rapidly that it was found desirable to compare the properties of a number of domestic substitutes for use in critical operations. Accordingly, a study was made to determine the best substitutes for fine grinding of white pigment and for certain heavy-chemical process work such as the disintegration of phosphate rock in weak phosphoric acid solution. A comprehensive survey of substitute lining materials was not contemplated. It was stipulated at the beginning of the investigation that only materials on the market, available in large quantities, would be tested and that these should be reasonable substitutes from a a ance viewpoint as determined from known physical characteristics. Marble and limestone, for example, could be eliminated immediately. Quartzite, granite and porcelain were selected as likely substitutes for Belgian silex and were subjected to quality tests. Materials Tested 1. Belgian Si1ex.—Sample blocks of a standard grade were taken from crates in which they had been imported. The stone was light gray in color and contained inclusions of small clusters of quartz crystals as well as light colored portions that might be calcite. This was a siliceous rock which appeared to be of igneous origin. 2. Quartzite.—Samples of quartzite were obtained from a quarry in Minnesota. The blocks exhibited a crystalline fracture. The stone was pink in color and composed of fine quartz crystals bound together with a siliceous cement. 3. Granite A was a fine-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 4. Granite B was coarse-grained granite quarried in South Carolina. 5. Granite C was a coarse-grained granite quarried in North Carolina. 6. Porcelain A.—Sample blocks of the pebble-mill lining material were obtained direct from the manufacturer. It was white in color and of lower specific gravity than the natural materials. IN the vicinity of Kirkland Lake, northern Ontario, several gold mines are producing, and three are at present being operated very profitably. At these three mines and on the adjoining properties east and west of them there have been important developments during the past year, and additional equipment has been installed to permit a large increase in output. At the end of 1924 the total production amounted to $13,688,600. For the year 1926 the production is estimated at about $19,000,000, and during 1926 the output should be much greater than that of 1925. The mines which are being operated most profitably and are producing a large part of the ore now being milled are the Wright-Hargreaves, Lake Shore and Teck-Hughes. Others which have contributed smaller amounts are the Tough-Oakes-Burnside and the Kirk- land Lake Gold mines.

After the phenomenal development of the new mine, the United Eastern Mining Co., with Mr. Frank A. Keith as President, decided to install a reduction plant. The character of the ore, closely resembling the product of other mines in the district, did not offer any particular metallurgical problems, since these neighboring mines had been operating milling plants very successfully for several years. Thus, with the general metallurgical treatment fairly well-defined, the matter of next importance was to design and construct a plant as economically as possible, that would give the best results obtainable. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz in about equal quantities, with some decomposed andesite, while the average value of mill feed was calculated to be $20 or more in gold, no silver being present. The tonnage to be treated at the start was fixed at 200 tons, but, in view of the favorable condition of the mine, it was considered advisable to arrange facilities for increasing the capacity to 400 tons. While it is best in some cases to adopt a distinct independent unit system where future enlargement is contemplated, in this instance the plans worked out differently. Summarized, the treatment adopted consists of coarse crushing, coarse grinding, fine grinding and cyanidation. For coarse crushing the selection of the No. 6 size gyratory crusher was governed not so much by its capacity as by the size of the feed openings to receive the run-of-mine material, which was too coarse for a No. 5 crusher. TO accomplish the coarse grinding to best advantage, a careful comparison was made between the modern steel ball-mill—the last word in crushing and grinding—and one of its older, and, at that time better-established, competitors, the rolls. The following conclusion was reached: While it is possible that for the sized plant under consideration the cost of operating rolls might be a little cheaper, it is preferable to use ball-mills because a simpler arrangement is possible, and because the handling of ball-mills is preferred by the operator. A marked departure was introduced for fine grinding. Instead of the long type of tube-mill, using pebbles, a mill of similar design was selected, but of much shorter length, using small cast-steel balls as grinding medium. In the uniform of his country for the second time, Harry Phillip Stolz. Chairman of the A.I.M.E. Petroleum Division, holds a commission as Lieutenant-Commander in the Naval Reserve and is attached to the office of Inspector of Naval Petroleum Reserves in California. During World War I he left his studies at Stanford University to join the Army and was granted a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1938 when he resigned to accept a commission as a member of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Advisory Board. Born in San Francisco Jan. 29,1899, where his father had lived since 1880, he was in that city during the turbulent year of 1906 where the city was ravaged by fire and earthquake.

IN the past five years, and without much fanfare, Turkey has emerged as a significant figure in the world mining picture. This has been accomplished by a five-year plan now in its last year. A second five-year plan is already under way, ahead of schedule. It will concentrate even more than the first in developing Turkish mines in order to increase present exports of coal, chrome ore, and copper, and to develop new mineral exports as well. To be fully understand the republicic?s mining program should be considered as something more than merely tapping rich resources in the East along the Aegean Sea, in the North among the mountains descending to the Black Sea, and in the West at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. It should also be viewed in the light of a strong nationalist policy with many aspects of state socialism. Turkey declares frankly that all mineral re- sources belong to the nation and all exploitation should be by the state for the twin purpose of modernizing the state and securing foreign exchange for the state by exports. Accordingly, the principal mines are state-operated and a few lesser enterprises, although not state-owned, have at least been put in the hands of Turkish capital.

HE results of an experimental investigation by McEvily and Machlin have indicated that a strong relationship exists between the processes of cross slip and fatigue. Whenever dislocations can cross onto an intersecting plane and expand thereon, as in AgCl crystals, the usual type of S-N behavior is obtained, but when such a process is difficult, as in NaCl crystals, fatigue does not occur in its usual manner, if at all. MgO, because of its crystal structure (NaCl type) and slip systems ({110}<110>) would not be expected to fail in fatigue. However, Cornet and Gorum2 have found something akin to the usual type of fatigue behavior for MgO crystals. The purpose of this note is to attempt to resolve this apparent discrepancy. In Cornet and Gorum&apos;s work as-cleaved crystals were tested under cyclic axial loading, whereas in McEvily and Machlin&apos;s work chemically-polished crystals were tested in reversed bending. Because of the difference in specimen preparation, the major effort of the present work was directed toward comparing the behavior of as-cleaved as opposed to chemically-polished specimens. The effect of type of loading seemed less important, but a check was made on this also. Eighteen bend tests and one axial load test were made. The specimens were cleaved from Norton magnorite blocks, and measured 1 by 3/16 by 1/8 in. To avoid failures in the grips, the thickness of the bend specimens was reduced from 1/8 in. near the ends to 0.04 in. in the central portion. This reduction was from one side of the crystal only. Twelve specimens were polished in orthophosphoric acid to remove the damage due to cleavage. The other six specimens were not chemically polished so as to maintain the as-cleaved condition of the crystal faces which had not been reduced. The annual .use of large quantities of sulphurous iron-ores (over 1,500,000 tons in the United States) has led to a search for the best methods of desulphurization, in order to make this material more available for the manufacture of a good quality of pig-iron. Although such ores can be used raw in small amounts, they must be previously roasted if they are to constitute the entire ore-charge of a furnace.

Salt, or halite, has a long and most varied history. While we know the Chinese were producing salt as early as 3000 B.C., the first written reference to salt appears in the book of Job recorded about 2250 B.C., which reads: "Can nothing which is unsavory be eaten without salt?" We do not know when man first used or realized that he needed salt. Perhaps one of our early Eolithic ancestors noted a piece of salt shining along the shore of a salt lake or a bay. He may have been attracted by its shining luster and tasted it. He found that it had a tart, zesty, distinctive flavor and perhaps chewing a large piece, became ill. However, by experimentation he soon learned that taken in the proper proportions salt was a very pleasant additive to his food. He may have noticed, too, that it increased his feeling of well-being. Thus, when the curtain of recorded history rises, we find man using salt for his health&apos;s sake, seasoning his food with it, feeding it to his animals, and using it in many superstitious and religious ceremonies. These uses, however, are a far cry from the uses for salt today. The first attempts of white man to make salt in continental United States were reported in the year 1614, while the first commercial production was in 1753 from the Kanawha licks. Practically all this salt was for human consumption, preserving food, and curing hides. Prior to the coming of the white man, Indians are known to have made salt from salt springs such as those that existed at Avery Island, LA, Charleston, WV, Saltville, VA, and Onondaga, NY. In 1862 the first rock salt was mined in the US from the Avery Island salt dome. Almost immediately thereafter, rock salt was mined at Saltville, VA and then at Retsof, NY in 1885. Of the more than 39 million tons produced annually in the United States, about 58% or 23 million tons are consumed by the chemical industry in the production of chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium metal, and some 30 other basic chemicals. These basic chemicals, in turn, are used in the preparation of approximately 14,000 chemicals which range from soap and detergents, to such chlorinated hydrocarbons as DDT, BHC, carbon tetrachloride, etc. Utilization of cavities created in salt beds and domes has grown rapidly since 1947 until now the waste salt is creating an ecological problem. The uses for both dry- and solution-mined cavities range from the storage of liquid hydrocarbons to containerized storage of toxic wastes, from compressed air for the peak shaving of power to storage of nuclear wastes. Geology Mineralogy Properties: Because of its simple structure, halite, the mineralogical name for salt, was the first structure to be analyzed by X-rays. Considerable work has resulted in the development of a formula by which the strength of coal pillars for an L to T ratio of up to 12 may be estimated. One of the factors involved in this formula is the coefficient of friction between the coal pillar and the adjacent rock with which it is in contact. This paper presents the results of studies on sandstone, limestone, shale and coal and the coefficient of friction between coal and the other three under wet and dry conditions. With the coefficients of friction thus determined and the use of results obtained earlier by Meikle and Holland, it seems probable that coal pillar strength may be more closely estimated. Several investigators1-3 have found that the com-pressive strength of cubical coal specimens can be correlated by an equation such as

THERE is at least one concrete indication that Soviet Russia&apos;s two most important iron ore producing centers are seriously depleted. While keeping in mind Russia&apos;s penchant for reverse propaganda, one piece of evidence indicates that Magnitugorsk in the southern Urals and Krivoi Rog in the Ukraine have been mined to a point where lower grade ores are being recovered. An article in Pravda, Soviet newspaper, by I. P. Bardin. a Russian metallurgist, says that ore presently mined must undergo an expensive enriching cycle before it can be used in blast furnaces. Com- pounding Russian metallurgical troubles is the low quality of coking coals. High ash and sulphur content typifies the coal Badin talks about. Coal from the Ukraine, Eastern Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the Far East requires extensive treatment before it can be used, according to the article in Pravda.

PST investigations into the possibility of concentrating the low-grade iron ores of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin have been hampered by the complex association of the constituent minerals. In part the problem arises from the fact that the iron occurs essentially as two minerals, hematite and goethite, having nearly the same chemical composition but exhibiting different physical properties. Individual grains of these minerals are usually so small that the ore must be ground to a size finer than 325 mesh if substantial liberation of the minerals is to be secured. Appraisal of beneficiation tests on this iron ore requires, therefore, some method of determining quantitatively the contents of constituent minerals in the various products of the beneficiation. Because of the chemical similarity of the two iron minerals, chemical analyses do not provide a means of differentiation. Although the minerals are different physically, they are both opaque and friable, and as the ore must be ground to a very fine size for liberation to be secured, quantitative microscopic methods of analysis are extremely difficult at best. In an effort to overcome these analytical problems, a quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis method has been developed at the University of Wisconsin for the research program on iron ore beneficiation. The X-ray diffraction analysis of chemical compounds of crystalline form has proved of inestimable value for structure studies and rapid qualitative analytical purposes in a number of fields.&apos; In some cases X-ray diffraction analysis has been found suitable for quantitative determinations. H. P. Klug2 found that quantitative procedures for quartz powders when mixed with calcium fluoride were reproducible within ±1.0 pct. Talvenheimo and White3 reported quantitative analyses of clay minerals to be accurate within 10 pct and also detected 1 pct of bentonite in 99 pct illite. In other investigations,&apos;" powders of quartz and mica have been analyzed quantitatively with accuracies from 1 to 5 pct. A powder of tungsten carbide was analyzed similarly by Redmond7 and Rooksby8 reported the determination of small amounts (0.11 pct) of calcium oxide in magnesium oxide. In the most generally practiced use of X-ray diffraction, traces of the diffracted beam are recorded as lines on a film much as lines of elements are recorded on an optical spectrograph film. As with the spectrograph, the darkness of the lines denotes the amount of the constituent in the sample. If the film is replaced by a Geiger tube assembly and a graphic recorder or a scaling unit, the intensity of the diffracted beam can be registered as a peak on a chart or energy impulses per unit of time on the scaler. Several methods of quantitative measurement have been investigated and reported in literature. Klug2 used manual operation of the goniometer and a counting technique to determine the difference in counting rates at the diffracted angle and for the background. In another case3 the area under the recorded diffracted peak was the basis for the determination. In other instances the height of the recorded diffraction peak above background, measured while the goniometer was moving, has been the basis for the measurement. The sizes of particles most suitable for diffraction techniques are reported in the literature as follows: for tungsten carbide a maximum of 40 microns7 and for quartz a maximum of 5 microns.&apos; Very fine sizes of crystals are known to cause a broadening of the diffused beams; hence some workers have set a lower limit of 0.1 micron for quantitative results. Guinier10 has indicated that broadening of the diffracted X-ray beam is not appreciable for crystallites larger than 0.02 to 0.03

On an average of at least once a year there comes to the attention of the Institute Headquarters the activities of some individual who represents himself as a member of the Institute, and by a hard-luck story or other means secures loans or advances of money which are never returned. On one or two occasions the Institute has been able to secure the arrest and conviction of these frauds. Recently some individual has been operating in California and defrauded several members of the Institute. He is described as a man of 5 ft. 7 or 8 in. height, decidedly slim, and his weight is about 140 lb. His hair and mustache are gray, eyes blue or gray and he claims to be near-sighted. He is also said to have had a keen, furtive, "Hang-dog" look and claims to have been raised in Bethlehem, Pa. He speaks with a German accent. If a man answering this description presents himself before any members and claims to be a member of the Institute it will be to the good of the profession if he can be caught making fraudulent representations and placed where his ability to defraud will be under control. The most effective means of apprehending persons of this character is the very prompt notification to Institute Headquarters of any persons claiming to be members of the Institute in hard luck. If such persons are asked to supply their signature or photograph or both to be, forwarded to Institute Headquarters for identification this will serve as an excellent check on their operations. Reluctance to comply with such a request is in itself a suspicious circumstance.

Morphological and electrical properties of GaAs epitaxial layers are influenced not only by changes in the nominal substrate orientation but also by small amounts of misorientation from the exact crystal planes. Deviations up to 5 deg from {11IA}, {11IB}, and (100) planes were investigated. Growth rates increase progressively with angle, approximately I u per hr per deg. Size and density of growth pyramids fall off with increasing angle, but other effects that are deleterious to the surface may occur which are heightened by increased misorientation. Carrier concentration decreases and electron mobility consequently increases as the angular offset increases, except in the case of strong compensation, where the mobility trend is reversed. It has long been known that changes in the crystallo-graphic orientation of the substrate may cause pronounced effects on the morphological properties of vapor grown semiconductor films. Reports of orienta-tion-dependent growth rates and surface characteristics are as old as the literature on epitaxy itself. shawl has recently published a comprehensive study of the dependence of growth rate on substrate temperature and orientation in epitaxial GaAs. It is also well-known that misorienting the substrate surface a few degrees away from the nominal low-index crystal-lographic plane often produces a much smoother epitaxial surface. This was reported by Tung2 for silicon, Reisman and Berkenblit3 for germanium, and by Kontrimas and Blakeslee4 for GaAs, and use is commonly made of this fact in the semiconductor industry to help guarantee smooth vapor deposits. The effects of substrate orientation on the carrier concentration and mobility of vapor grown GaAs were first documented by williams5 in 1964 and have been observed by several other authors since then,6,7 but no one has yet reported a careful study of how small changes influence these properties. We have made such a study and have found that sizable differences in growth rate, morphology, carrier concentration, and mobility can indeed be observed for epitaxial films grown on substrates that are oriented by progressive small increments away from the exact crystal plane. EXPERIMENTAL Early in the investigation an arsine synthesis system of conventional design8 was employed to produce growths on {111A}-oriented GaAs substrate crystals. In that early work, pronounced effects on carrier concentration and electron mobility were observed as a function of slight misorientation from this low index plane. That observation led to the more careful study that is reported here. An AsC13 system, differing in major aspect from those commonly in use today9 only in that the reactor is vertical rather than horizontal, was used for the detailed study. The gallium source was at 900°C and the substrates were at 750°C. The flow rate of pal-ladium-diffused H2 through the AsCl3 bubbler was 200 cu cm per min, and the flow rate of bypass H2 was also 200 cu cm per min. The substrates consisted of chro-mium-doped semiinsulating GaAs to facilitate elec-trical evaluation of the overgrowth by means of Hall and conductivity measurements on conventional eight-legged Hall bridges. They were misoriented by 0 to 5 deg from the {111A}, {111B}, and (100) planes, toward the (100) from the {111A} and {111B} and randomly toward the <111A> or <111B> from the {loo). The crystals were oriented for sawing by the Laue back-re-flection technique, which is good only to about ±1/2 deg; but after polishing or sometimes after epitaxial growth the wafers were checked by a diffractometer technique which is accurate to about * 0.1 deg. After lapping, the wafers were polished with NaOCl after the technique of Reisman and Rohr,10 and just before use they were cleaned in NaOC1, thoroughly rinsed with de-ionized water, and blown dry with nitrogen. Each run employed four wafers, each misoriented by differing amounts from one of the three major faces, and at least two runs were made for each orientation. The runs were continued long enough to provide at least a 15-µ or thicker layer. SURFACE MORPHOLOGY The appearance of all the films that were grown in a given run always changed from wafer to wafer as a function of increasing misorientation, but not always in the same regular fashion. The Transactions of the Institute contain nothing, as yet, on the subject of pocket-compasses; and in the belief that American miners, explorers, geologists, and engineers will gladly welcome any infor mation about new forms of apparatus, simple in construction and adapted to rapid use, I offer a short description of an improved French combination pocket-compass, which, if once introduced into use, would seem likely to supersede similar instrumens of older pattern. The instrument in my possession I owe to the kindness of M. G. de.La Bouglise, of Paris. The frame of the compass is a double-bottomed box, 2 1/2 inches square and 9/16 of an inch high, made of white metal, and with its sur faces very carefully planed. The sides of the box make true right angles with each other. Two sides are parallel with, and two are normal to, the north and south line of the principal graduation. The bottom is accurately planed, so that the instrument will lie true on a plane surface. A glass, 2 3/8 inches in diameter, is set in the top plate. The graduation for the needle is engraved on the upper face of a ring, connected with the flat disk, in which the center-pin is in serted. Between this disk and the bottom of the box there is a hollow space a quarter of an inch deep. The needle is 1 7/8 inches in length, and can be balanced by means of a small sliding piece of metal. The graduation extends from 0° to 360°, reading from right to left. The stopping of the needle is effected by a screw, A, on the side of the box near the handle, H (Fig. 1). There is also a clinometer attachment, the graduation for which is engraved on the upper face of the silver-plated disk. The compass has two sights. The north sight, B, is a simple pin, a little more than an inch high, which, when not in use, is kept folded down, and is partially protected by the exterior sliding-plate, C.
