The object of crushing and grinding for leaching is obviously to permit contact of the solvent and mineral and subsequent removal of pregnant solution in a reasonable time. Heap leaching is the leaching of ores that have been mined and transported to prepared, relatively impervious pads for leaching by sprinkling or ponding, and percolation of the lixiviate through the ore. Dump leaching is the leaching of dumps or low-grade ore or overburden without the use of prepared pads under them. Run-of-mine material, e. g., low -grade ore from open pit stripping operations, may be leached without crushing, and a fairly high recovery made by heap leaching. An alternate method for better grade gold/silver ores is to crush to 9 to 13 mm (318 to112 in. ) size for pad heap leaching, as used by Smoky Valley Mining Company at Round Mountain, Nevada, on gold ore, and to 38 rnrn (1 -1 12 in.), which will be done by Candelaria Partners, at Candelaria, Nevada, on silver ore. Heap leaching of copper probably began at Rio Tinto, Spain, about the year 1752. This was done by the leaching of weathering piles of ore in the open air followed by iron cementation of the liquor that drained off the heaps. Its application to the low -grade southwestern United States copper ores was overlooked for many years, and low- grade ores from Sacramento Hill at Bisbee, Arizona, were the first to be heap leached in 1923. Site preparation used a half century ago is the same today. "The need for some form of waterproofing of the pad was evident. Before leaching ore was piled, the site was cleared of cactus and brush. After clearing a gentle sloping area, it was then covered with a blanket of rolled and tamped clay or slime tailing. When heaps are built, a layer of coarse fragments may be put down first to assist drainage. A second method of leaching without grinding, usually for higher grade ores, is by vat or tank leaching of material crushed to 9 to 13 mm (318 to 112 in.) size. Such a plant is considerably more expensive than a heap leaching installation but much less costly than grinding for agitation leaching, and a recovery higher than that obtained by heap leaching is to be expected. Vat leaching has been widely used by the copper industry on higher grade copper ores but has been used in only a few small operations on that size gold or silver ores. However, such a plant should be considered for a modest tonnage of a few million tons, 3 to 7 g per mt (0.10 to 0.20 oz per st), of Carlin-type leachable ores crushed to 9 mm (318 in.).

Reed, Jr. The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, "Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate," July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing "super"-concentrates prepared from magnetite or "blue dust" into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloys to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential. ?

MILLER, Canada. The nomination for President has attracted the attention of a large number of members, as is evidenced by the receipt of many hundreds of letters and postcards. Most of these favored either Sidney J. Jennings or Philip N. Moore, each of whom received many cordial endorsements. Such a wide interest on the part of the members is a very wholesome sign, but where there is so much activity it is natural to expect a certain amount of criticism. Some of the letters indicate that the authors feel that the nomination of President should be left entirely to the Committee on Nominations without any effort by the members at large to influence them. Others feel that the nominations are largely controlled by a small group and that the members at large can have little influence. As the result; of the experience of the last few months; a majority of the Committee on Nominations begs leave to suggest that the method of making nominations be changed so that two candidates, at least, for the various offices to be nominated, and suggests that the Directors appoint a committee to investigate this question thoroughly with. a view to making definite recommendations. In accordance with its opinion that the best interests of the Institute would be served by a change in the Constitution, allowing the nomination of two candidates, and in view of the fact that this Committee has no authority to make more than a single nomination for each office, considering the high standing of both Mr. Jennings and Mr. Moore and the large number of members favoring each of these gentlemen, this Committee respectfully suggests the desirability of ,the immediate nomination of Philip N. THE subject assigned me, "Safety in Mining," is a very broad one and only the high spots can be covered in this short paper. As this is a meeting of the Coal Division, these remarks will be directed largely to coal mine safety, although the principles of safety and effective accident prevention methods are relatively the same in every branch of mining or industrial work. The coal mining industry should take pride in the part it has played in the development of the accident prevention movement, and there is ample proof for the statement that the first real organized accident prevention, work, both abroad and in this country, was con- ducted in the coal mining industry.

KINETICS of the reaction of zirconium with pure oxygen at elevated temperatures have been studied by several workers for periods of time up to 6 hr.1-1 In two cases,3-4 . the experimental values of oxygen uptake, w, as a function of time, t, were best fitted to the parabolic rate law w2 = kPt + constant. In others,3,4 the cubic rate law w3 = kot + constant, showed better agreement. The most recent data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 indicate that the choice between the parabolic and cubic laws for empirical representation of the data will often be arbitrary. This is particularly true if the first few minutes of the reaction with a clean zirconium surface is attributed to a different oxidation mechanism, for deviations from either rate law were found primarily during the initial period. Thus, the kinetics of this reaction have been too uncertain to permit safe extrapolation to oxidation periods of practical interest (many hundreds of hours). The data to be described are of interest, for they indicate that the cubic rate law applies over long oxidation times. The reaction of zirconium with oxygen at 1 atm pressure was followed at 350" and 450°C for 500 and 200 hr, respectively. Abraded test specimens of pure zirconium sheet' 3.0 X 2.0 X 0.012 cm in size were oxidized by the procedure previously described,3 which included periodic cooling to room temperature for weighing. The surfaces were polished to a 4/0 finish using polishing paper wet with kerosene, then wiped with petroleum ether and washed in redistilled acetone. Fig. 1 shows plots of log ? vs log t. Each curve represents the average of duplicate measurements, and deviations from the average were generally less than 3 pet. The cubic rate law (slope = 1/3) is closely followed. The rate constants, 5.2, x 10 -6 and 2.4, X 10- (mg cm-2)3 per hr at 350" and 450 oC, respectively, are plotted as log k, vs 1/T in Fig. 2, together with cubic constants calculated from the data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 for abraded specimens from the same lot of zirconium. Their data refer to runs of 6-hr duration at a pressure of 0.1 atm 0 and under conditions of uninterrupted heating. In spite of these differences, the latter data yield a straight line which appears to apply equally well to the new extended time data. The energy of activation for the oxidation process, calculated from the slope of this line, i.s 38 keal per mole. This may be compared with the value of 47 keal per mole found by Belle and Mallett3 at higher temperatures. It may be concluded tentatively that extrapolation of short-term oxidation data for zirconium to obtain the long-term behavior is best done through the cubic equation ?3 = kpt + constant. In an effort to conserve and extend oil resources, the use of powdered coal-in-oil mixtures (COM) as an alternate fuel in oil-fired boilers is receiving increasing attention. For the approach to be successful, some degree of stability of the suspension against settling is needed. The variety of means available to achieve stability of this nonaqueous slurry is reviewed along with some of the physical and chemical concepts which underlie each method.

An earlier paper on the general subject of the SP log has analyzed the limitations of that log, in particular when dealing with thin permeable beds enclosed in thick highly resistive ones. Under such conditions, the SP log does not give a good definition of the permeable beds. Selective SP logging is a new method which gives an accurate determination of the permeable beds; even in highly resistive formations, except when the salinity of the mud is extremely high. It also permits a close approxi. mation of the static SP to be obtained. The method consists generally in controlling the potential of auxiliary electrodes located in the drill holes in the vicinity of the measuring electrode. In this manner. the flow of SP current along the drill hole is modified to counterbalance the effect of highly resistive strata. Several procedure; and arrangements used to record selective SP curves and static SP curves are explained. Field examples illustrating these methods are given and discussed. INTRODUCTION In an earlier paper,' the shape of the SP curves and the amplitude of the SP peaks were analyzed, considering how the circulation of the SP current is influenced by the subsurface media as a function of their geometrical configuration and their resistivities. It was shown, in particular. that the permeable beds situated between highly resistive formations are sometimes indistinctly indicated by the deflections of the SP log. It is the purpose of this paper to dircuss a new method now being developed, namely selective SP logging, whose principal feature is to enable a more accurate determination of the depths of the permeable beds present in highly resistive formations, such as occur in limestone fields. It will be shown also how an addi-tional curve called the static SP log can be derived from the selective SP log, or recorded directly, to facilitate the interpretation. Another purpose of the static SP log is to provide an approach toward the determination of the value of the static SP, where this value is not readily given by the SP log. This application. although less important at the present time than that mentioned above, nevertheless is of interest, inasmuch as, according to laboratory and field experiments conducted by several investigators, the determination of oil saturation of reservoirs from the data of the electric log implies the knowledge of the resistivity of the connate water,2,3 to which the static SP seems to be related.4,5,6,7 PRINCIPLE OF SELECTIVE SP LOGGING The method of selective SP logging of the formations traversed by a bore hole consists in recording two curves under the following conditions: The measuring device comprises one measuring electrode M and two additional electrodes G-G', connected to each other. located above and below

DURING the fury of the conflict it was believed quite generally that World War II was being fought for and would accomplish a permanent peace. Yet, before the guns were actually stilled on all fronts, the American people realized that the devastated world would continue to be dominated by suspicion and uncertainty. The misunderstandings which rapidly developed indicated that it may prove unwise to rely wholly on mutual international agreements and contracts to avoid war. Before the celebrations of V-Day died down serious thought was being given toward measures for preparedness for the next conflict. Along with a realization of the enormous loss of life caused by the destructive forces of war, the American people came to understand the seriousness of the rapid and unwarranted depletion of our natural resources. During the last half of 1945 the question of stock-piling strategic and critical raw materials for a future national emergency became an intensely live subject.

Discussion of the paper of, RICHARD H. RICE, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 89, May, 1914, pp. 721 to 743. S. G. VALENTINE, Oxford, N. J.-In a paper read at the New York meeting of the Institute last February I presented some notes taken from our experience with the turbo blower operating on a blast furnace. In connection with Mr. Rice's very interesting paper there are a few items that might be of further practical interest. The question of the reliability of this type of blower will naturally be presented. In this connection we would say that our turbo blower has been in practically continuous use during the present blast, which was begun June 7, 1912, with only three interruptions for repairs of any consequence. Soon after blowing in there was developed a tendency of the blower to surge or pulsate. This occurred on operating at a point considerably below the normal capacity of the machine, and was checked with comparatively little trouble by throttling the intake slightly and taking up a small lost motion on the governor connections, a legacy of the previous blast that had not been attended to. All this required only a few hours' time. In. March, 1914, the furnace being banked on account of a blizzard that cut off our freight deliveries for five days, the opportunity was used to replace the carbon packing on the steam-turbine shaft and to repack the steam inlet valves. In June, 1914, the blower was off 8 hr. to replace an oil ring and scrape a bearing. With these exceptions we have made continuous use of the machine and find we can depend upon it with entire safety as a piece of machinery.

Molybdenite mineralization occurs in the hood zone of the Questa mine aplite-porphyry intrusive, one of the three sil ica-rich intrusive5 occurring along the east-west trending Red River Trench that crosses the northerly trending Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico. The Trench is located immediately north of the circular Gold Hill positive block between the Red River and Cabresto Creek drainages. The aplite-porphyry bodies intruded a mid-Tertiary volcanic section consisting of lower andesites, overlain by latites and rhyolites. They occur largely in the andesites and were emplaced mainly by metasomatism rather than by sloping. Hydrothermal alteration occurs both as blanket propylitization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the porphyries and as halo-type alteration outward from veins and shear zones resulting in strong biotization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the aplitic rocks. Mineralization consists of: ( 1) molybdenite- quartz veinlets; (2) banded molybdenite, quartz veins frequently with biotite and potash feldspar along the walls and occasionally with minor lead, zinc, and copper sulfides and with fluorite and carbonates when again reopened; ( 3) high grade molybdenite locally along shear zones; and ( 4) molybdenite paint along joint and fracture surfaces. The mineralization was associated with faulting that resulted from numerous periods of gravity adjustment along the Trench and was controlled by the major shear systems that trend northeast, east-west and north-south to northwest. Molybdenite has been well oxidized in nearsurface exposures to ferrimolybdite and the molybdenum-bearing ferric hydroxide, akaganeite. The oxidation of the abundant pyrite within the veins and shear zones and of the alteration pyrite in the volcanics resulted in a low pH environment under which the acid molybdate ion released by oxidation was fixed either in the ferrimolybdite or the akaganeite molecule in the veins and shear zones or in the soils. Little has been lost in the runoff.

ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. (Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN the copper-mining district of northern Michigan a fair-sized mine usually operates two or more shafts along the strike of the lode, these shafts being usually at least 1,000 ft. apart. The tonnage to be hoisted from each shaft is large-from 13,000 to 25,000 tons per month. The hoisting-engines used are generally steam-driven, non-condensing, duplex engines with Corliss valves, supplied by steam from separate boiler-plants where the distance between shafts is great. In an attempt to centralize power-plants and secure central-station economies, the Winona Copper Co. installed an electric hoist of the Ilgner type, with Ward Leonard control. A brief description of this plant has already been published.1 The only point of variation from the simple Ilgner set lies in the connection of two generators to a single induction-motor by flexible couplings. These generators serve motors which operate hoisting-drums at separate shafts, viz., No. 4 shaft, Winona, and No. 1 shaft, King Philip. , The hoist for No. 4 shaft, is about 1,700 ft. from the power-plant, and in this building the motor-generator set is placed. No. 1 King Philip hoist is 1,500 ft. from the motor-generator set. The equipment of the motor-generator set is as follows: In the middle of the set is a 12-pole, 450-h-p., 600-rev. per min., 2,080-volt, three-phase, 60-cycle, variable-speed induction-motor, connected on each side to a 20-ton fly-wheel which is 10 ft. in diameter, and to a 6-pole, 170-kw, 575-volt, interpole, direct-current generator. On each side of the shaft is placed a separate exciter, which delivers current at 125 volts. SINCE its first mention in the literature in the eighteenth century1,2 the phenomenon of passivity in metals has stimulated much speculation and attendant controversy as to its nature and cause. No one of the numerous theories so far proposed has been generally accepted. ? Faraday,7 in 1836, associated the passivity of iron with a protective film over the surface of the metal, which materially prevents or slows down reaction with corrosive environments. His theory was that oxidizing acids like nitric acid form an unstable oxygen or oxide layer over the iron surface, which protects the underlying metal from further attack. This concept was simple yet plausible, and without alteration has frequently been assigned in present-day discussions as explanation of the passivity of many metals. With the advent in recent times of stainless steels, it is not surprising that this oxide film theory of passivity proposed by Faraday has been used to explain the phenomenal corrosion resistance of stainless steels and other passive alloys. The passive alloys, such as the chrome-iron alloys, are supposedly covered with a protective oxide film, which forms on exposure of the alloy to air, is extremely stable and self-healing, and accounts for the remarkable resistance of these alloys to corrosion. Within the past few years, several investigators, following the theory of film protection, have attempted to gauge the resistance of the supposed film on steels. Brennert8 and Donker and Dengg9 determined the poten-tial at which a negative ion (e.g., Cl-) moving in an electric field reacted with the metal anode, as detected by increased current flow or change in potential of the steel electrode in an electrolytic cell. The potential corresponding to reaction Brennert called the film break-through potential.

The role of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride species in determining the zeta potential of apatite in aqueous solutions was investigated in this study. The zeta potential of apatite was determined by streaming potential measurements over a wide range of concentrations of potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and potassium fluoride solutions at various pH values. While the addition of phosphate made the apatite surface more negative at all pH values, calcium caused a significant increase of the zeta potential only when the zeta potential was negative. Fluoride addition had only a minor effect on the zeta potential, but both negative and positive values were increased.

USE of oxygen in metallurgical operations was investigated by a committee of unusually able engineers more than ten years ago. A record of their work appeared under the title "The Use of Oxygen or Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical and Allied Processes," Serial 2502, Report of Investigations, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Shortly thereafter the A.I.M.E. published "Use of Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical Operations," based on a symposium at the New York meeting, February 1, 924. Quoting from the Bureau of Mines report In view of the many recent developments in oxygen manufacture, and considering the increasing cost and decreasing quality of our raw materials, the Bureau of Mines has taken the matter of the application of oxygen or oxygenated air to the metallurgical centers for consideration and has appointed an advisory committee to study the problem.

For the past two and one-half years, various emission control strategies were jointly developed by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners to com- ply with the clean air requirements at its Homer City Power Plant. Some of the available options for the SO2 emission control by the Homer City Owners were:l)cleaning of run-of-mine coal,2) scheduling of mining operations at its captive mines, 3) blending the captive mine coal with externally purchased low sulfur coa1,and 4) placing a partial FGD system. This paper describes two specific emission control strategies developed and implemented. These are: 1) production scheduling at the mining face to minimize sulfur variability, and 2) external purchasing of low sulfur coal for further blending. The main objective of this paper is to share our experiences on implementing the developed strategies. This paper emphasizesthe need for proper mine planning on a short-term basis, if the power plant is to meet the desired objective.

THE Santa Barbara Unit of the Compania Minera Asarco, of which the San Diego mill is a part, is in the Parral District of southern Chihuahua. Although the concentration of sulfide ores has been practised in Santa Barbara since 1900, the San Diego mill, completed in 1921, was the first plant in northern Mexico to attempt the treatment of oxidized lead ores. From the milling point of view the many ores that have been treated at San Diego are very similar, the differences among them being rather of degree than type. Since 1921 the number of ores from different sources treated simultaneously has varied from four to eleven; in no case have any distinctive characteristics warranted the separate treatment of any of these. The zone of oxidation, source of the ores milled at San Diego, extends to a depth of 300 to 400 ft. below the surface. These ores carry more gold and less silver, lead, copper, and zinc than the underlying sulfide ores; the gangue minerals appear comparatively unchanged by oxidation and leaching. Lead occurs in diverse minerals, chiefly in cerussite, galena, and angle-site, the proportion of the lead in galena varying considerably in the different mines. An average of the feed to the mill would show the following approximate distribution of the lead content:
