WITH gold at $35 for the last four years, almost double the old figure, and 'an unlimited market, there is perhaps more activity in the mining and milling of that metal than in that of any other of the widely distributed ores. Despite threats from Russia, the Rand district is still dominant. In South Africa in 1936, 48,200,000 tons of gold ore was crushed after sorting out about 10 per cent of that mined. The pounding of 5914 trusty stamps on the 60 mi. of Rand reefs is noteworthy. At the end of 1935, 466 tube mills were operating on the Rand, the popular size being 6 1/2 by 20 ft. The grinding medium normally consists of ore pebbles picked from the ore but recently a composite load of 3-in. steel balls and pebbles has found favor for added capacity, a ratio of 2.5 tons of pebbles to one ton of halls being maintained. The total ore fed to the mills is only about 0.14 ton per hp.-hr. Such a slow rate 'of feed cannot help but result in overgrinding. Ball mills, 9 by 8 ft., some of which have come from Canada, are now being tried. Stamps have been ousted from all new flow sheets, but the old stamp mills are continually renovated and kept on duty as they are at the Homestake in the United States. Half of the world's gold and silver ores is still crushed by stamps, a few of which are single, dropping in individual mortars.'

SALT-MAKING PROCESSES THE production of salt in the United States divides itself at the outset into two distinct classes: (1) The mining of rock salt and its purification and separation into marketable sizes, and (2) the production of salt by evaporation from brines, bitterns, and other solutions. The processes employed at the present time in the manufacture of salt by evaporation may be outlined as follows: 1. Solar evaporation. 2. Direct-heat evaporation (a) in open kettles; (b) in open pans. 3. Steam evaporation, (a) in jacketed kettles, (b) in grainers. 4. Vacuum-pan evaporation. In this paper only the solar-evaporation processes practised in different parts of the United States will be described. SOLAR EVAPORATION Localities In the Eastern States the solar-evaporation process is not generally employed for climatic reasons. In the Western States, particularly in California and Utah, the great bulk of the salt produced originates in the solar-evaporation process. Of the Eastern States producing salt, this process, so far as the writer is aware, is employed in New York State only.

Slow-settling, fine-grained suspensions can often be dewatered and densified by applying direct current between buried electrodes. Although water removal rates and power expenditures depend on physical and chemical properties of the treated slurries, metal mine tailings from Idaho, Colorado, and Mexico have responded well in laboratory testing, as have 29 samples of ultrafine coal waste from mines in nine states. This Bureau of Mines report reviews field tests at two Idaho metal mines and describes the recent installation at the Henderson molybdenum mine near Empire, Colorado, and the treatment of coal sludge at a Clinchfield Coal Co. preparation plant near Dante, Virginia.

THE rate of isothermal transformation of austenite to pearlite depends upon the rate of nucleation, N, and the rate of growth, G, of pearlite in austenite.1.2 Values of N are given in terms of the number of nuclei forming in unit time per unit grain boundary area of unreacted austenite; values of G are given in terms of the linear rate of radial growth. Variations in the isothermal rate with temperature result from variation of -N and G with temperature. Depth of hardening of a steel depends fundamentally upon values of N and G; changes in carbon and alloy content effect changes in N and G and thus affect depth of hardening. Quantitative studies are available on N and G for the formation of pearlite in plain carbon eutectoid steels.3 Systematic studies in this field are necessary if the phenomena are to be well enough known to furnish. a proper basis for full rationalization and for theory. Accordingly, the studies are continuing, both with respect to the effect of alloying elements upon the values of N and G in the formation of pearlite, and to the values of N and G for the formation of ferrite in hypoeutectoid steels. The present paper is the first relating to the effect of alloying elements upon the values of N and G for pearlite. It offers special interest since cobalt is known to have an anomalous effect upon the rate of formation of pearlite, accelerating it, whereas all other elements retard it.' It will be shown that cobalt increases both N and G for pearlite and that this effect is inherent in the Fe-Co-C system and not dependent upon factors relating to austenite heterogeneity nor upon any recognizable adventitious factor. Inasmuch as the rate of diffusion of carbon in austenite and the interlamellar spacing of pearlite are variables related to G and possibly to N (in a manner not yet certain), measurements of the "effect of cobalt upon them are also reported here. In the course of the work, measurements were made on the effect of cobalt upon the martensite temperature and these are given. COBALT AS AN ALLOYING ELEMENT IN STEEL PROPERTIES OF COBALT Cobalt resembles iron more closely than does any other chemical element. Its atomic number is 27, hence it is the element immediately following iron in the periodic system. The resignation of Herbert Hoover, Director General of Relief in Europe, from his post as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Food Administration Grain Corporation, in which capacity he had served for nearly two years; and the reorganization of the corporation under the name of the United States Grain Corporation, with Julius Barnes, United States Wheat Director, as its new head, took place at the annual meeting of the stockholders, held in New York, July 1. This action on the hart of Mr. Hoover is believed to be one of the first steps in his intended withdrawal from public service upon the conclusion of the war service of the various departments of the Food Administration, or as soon as they shall have been absorbed by other agencies. The Grain Corporation has been, for the past two years, a vast collection and distribution agency. Its function has been to assist in supplying to the Allies and the American Army and Navy large quantities of wheat, wheat flout, and other foods, with very little disturbance of American prices, and with such an even control of American distribution that reserves from one crop to another have been brought down to the lowest possible compass and without the dvelopment of actual scarcity anywhere in the United States. In the year just past, it carried on all the buying and the shipping for, the Belgian Relief Commission, until the commission retired on May 1 and the Belgian Government itself undertook its own overseas supplies. During the twenty-two months of its existence the corporation had disbursed $3,500,000,000 and collected an equal amount, selling for over-seas shipments commodities valued at $1,800,000,000, at an operating expense of about $3,250,000, or one-sixth of 1 per cent. During this time it has not lost a single dollar through fire loss.

ThE published U-Ru equilibrium diagram indicates the existence of six intermetallic compounds in this system.' The structure of only two of the compounds, u2Ru2,3 and URU3,4 have been identified. This communication reports on the crystal structure and density of Uau3, which is formed by a peritectoid transformation at 1025° ± 5°C: U3Ru4 + U3Ru5 = U2Ru3. An alloy with the stoichiometric formula U2Ru3 was prepared by arc melting electrolytic uranium and ruthenium of 99.9 pct purity on a water-cooled copper hearth under an argon atmosphere. After homo-genization at 1000°C for 3 days, a metallographic examination revealed that the peritectoid transformation was complete and less than 5 pct of a second phase was present. A powdered sample, obtained by crushing the brittle compound, was annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C and air-cooled. Debye-Scherrer patterns were obtained with filtered CrKa, FeKa, CoKa, or CuKa radiation. The X-ray patterns of U2Ru3 weFe indexed as an fcc structure with a. = 12.895 0.00lA. The unit-cell constant and its standard deviation were calculated by a computer program described by Mueller, Heaton, and Miller.5 The density, measured by an immersion method, was 14.45 g cm-3. A calculated density of 14.48 g cm-3 was obtained on the assumption that twenty-four formula units (120 atoms) comprise a unit cell. The space group is either oh7 Fd3m, or the less symmetric, T4h, Fd3, since reflections indexed as hk0 with h + k + 4n are absent. All values of h2 + k2 + 12 permitted by both space groups are listed in Table I together with dc, do, and I. values. The calculated d spacings were obtained by the computer program of Mueller, Meyer, and simonsen.6 The observed d spacings above 0.77A were obtained from X-ray" patterns prepared with CuKa radiation, above 0.90A with CoKa radiaaion, above 0.98A with FeKa radiation, and above 1.16A with CrKa radiation. An attempt was made to identify the crystal structure of U2Ru3 by comparison with published data on other A2B3 compounds. A recent compilation7 of intermetallic compounds lists thirty-two structure types with the A2B3 stoichiometry. Only two of the structure types are fcc and they are Sb2O3(r), senarmontite, with 16 Sb2O3 per unit cell, and In2Te3 for which several structures have been proposed.8 However, the two cases cited do not have twenty-four formula units in the unit cell. We therefore, cannot identify UPRU3 with any of the other known A2B3 compounds. Ternary alloys were made in which 5 at. pct Os, Rh, or A1 were substituted for 5 pct of the Ru in U2Ru3. Andres (The Technion, Haifa, Israel)-The authors are to be congratulated on their research, new and interesting, in a field which, however, the present writer and his assistants have been trying since 1962 to bring to the attention of the scientific and technical world, by means of publications covering several different aspects of this many-sided problem. We announced, in these publications, the results of magneto-hydrostatic (MHD) separation of magnetic and nonmagnetic minerals which we made in magnetic fluids (in paramagnetic solutions and suspensions of magnetic particles) which interact with permanent" and impermanent" inhomogeneous magnetic fields. There is no doubt that the authors have succeeded in creating ferrimagnetic colloids made by dispergation of 10-30 wt % of magnetite in kerosene in the presence of 7-10 vl % oleic acid. It may be judged by [Figs. 3 and 4] that the suspensions represent great stability systems and also "hysteresisless" fluids [(Fig. 5)] which bear witness to the existence of superparamagnetic suspensions. If the viscosity of these colloids is not so high, and the cost of preparing them can be covered, the fluids which have here been received can possibly be of interest to the technology of mineral separation. The potential possibility and technological perspective of similar media is demonstrated in our joint work with G. Bunin18 in 1965. The research carried out on the pushing out of cylinders and spheres from magnetic fluid is impressive; it would, however, have been interesting if the authors had compared their results with those on the pushing out of bodies from magnetic fluids adduced from our work." In my books" there happens to be described an experiment on the pushing out of a sphere in magnetic wedge field, in which the pushing out force of suspension with 5 vl % of magnetite reached 125 g per cc. This testifies to interesting possibilities of these media. Our works' shows also, on the basis of Laplace's equation the receiving of an interesting distribution of pushing out forces by selection of corresponding configurations of magnetic poles. Objection must be made to the authors' introduction of the term "antigravity force." The direction of this force does not depend on the direction of the gravity force and their opposition, i.e., antigravity is only one particular case. I am in full agreement with the authors' statement that magnetic pushing out forces "can be utilized to separate nonmagnetic objects according to variations in their densities." It is, however, necessary to make only one important addition, which can be found in our research on MHS at the Technion in Haifa, namely, that magnetic fluids in magnetic fields can be utilized in the separation of minerals according to variations in their magnetic susceptibility. The authors' conclusion is especially important considering the fact that in our publications" (including one in English") some designs of MHS separators and some technological results received on MHS-separators have already been described. Reimers (Authors' Reply)We were aware (mostly through Chemical Abstracts of the American Chemical Society) of the use of solutions of paramagnetic salts such as manganous sulfate in agnetohydrodynamic separations by the Russian school headed by G. Bunin."n Professor Andres' contributions to this school are also evident in his application of the ponderomotive forces in an electrolyte placed in electric and magnetic cross-fields to separate coal and other useful minerals." It must be realized, however, that the foregoing research by Bunin et al." involved the use of magnetic fields and field gradients of very large magnitudes, i.e., such that H • grad H - 101 Oe2 per cm. The magnetization of paramagnetic salt solutions range from 0.1 to 0.5 gauss (at fields of a few thousand Oersteds) and never reach saturation. The magnetization of our superparamagnetic ferrofluids ranges from 100 to 500 gauss and reach saturation at fields of a few hundred Oersteds. Hence, to effect the same separation, the quantity "H

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911,) DURING April, May, and June, 1910, I was in charge of an examination of the greater part of the Moa iron-ore area in Oriente Province, Cuba, on the north coast, near the east end of the island. My instructions, on arrival at the properties, were to check former estimates of tonnages and grades, and to re-examine the ore comprised in claims covering 44,727 acres. This work included .the running of lines dividing the properties into co-ordinate planes, the boring of many thousand feet of holes spaced at the intersections of these co-ordinates, the taking of samples of the ore penetrated, the analysis of these samples for their various constituent minerals, and the determination of the results as to tonnages, depths, and grades, both for individual properties and for the entire group. Each section of every one of the thousand holes drilled was to be compensated for depth and grade with every other, a series of simple arithmetical calculations of no slight magnitude, the mere mechanical labor of which consumed much time, but finally resulted in giving a complete average of all the essential facts for the entire area of 18,000 hectares. Had it not been for the more than willing, active, and able co-operation of the officers of the Spanish-American Iron Co., from Charles F. Rand, President, and Jennings S. Cox, General Manager, down to the most humble water-carrier, the work would have consumed far more time than it did. Papers prepared by others, and to which my present paper may be considered an addendum, elucidate, more fully than I could hope to do, the origin and geological character of these ores. I will confine myself to the situation, method and expense of exploration, and to probable courses of development and mining, with some attention to the cost of the ore delivered in the United States.

The Tigre Mining Co. of Mexico, owned by the Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co. of Kansas City, decided early in 1910 to enlarge its mill, which consisted of a concentrator milling 3,000 tons of ore per month. The enlarged plant was designed to crush and concentrate 6,000 of ore and to cyanide 7,500 tons per month. The extra tonnage cyanided was to be obtained from tailings which were stored below the old mill. Power was supplied to the old mill from four boilers; a 150-h-p. Corliss engine and two Weber 60-h-p. gas-engines using producer-gas made from charcoal. The total horse-power required, including 60 h-p. used for machine-drills in the mine, was approximately 275. Cord-wood cost $4.32 per cord, 8 by 4 by 3 ft., and charcoal $15 per ton. The fuel supply in the surrounding country was approaching exhaustion; more than 150 mules and 50 men were engaged in cutting and transporting this fuel, and the unsettled political conditions in Sonora were such that it would be practically impossible to keep an organization of this kind together. The price of fuel was steadily rising and at times it became almost impossible to get sufficient fuel to operate. It was estimated that the enlarged plant, together with the mine, would require 750 h-p., as follows: Horse-Power. Unfortunately, Mr. Meissner has not indicated a single statement or conclusion in my paper that he wishes to controvert; but as there is evidently a difference of opinion between us I will disregard this fact, and will discuss those conclusions of his that seem to me not to be justified by the facts of general practice, or even by the data which he produces to support them. An equation is derived for calculating approximately the solubility of nitrogen in an alloy steel over a temperature range from 1200" to 1900°C using data on the effects of alloys on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in iron at 1600°C. Calculated values are compared with experimental data. STUDIES involving the solubility of nitrogen in complex iron alloys have been aided by a system devised by Lanenberg for calculating the solubility of nitrogen in ternary and higher alloys of iron at 1600C using available data on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in binary alloys. Calculated nitrogen solubilities agree well with experimental determinations on complex alloys,' and the calculation procedure is useful when experimental data on specific alloys are not required. A method for extending calculations of nitrogen solubilities in alloy steels to temperatures other than 1600°C would be useful because of the paucity of experimental data in this area. Assumptions which must be made to permit this calculation introduce an element of approximation; however, the calculation is useful in cases where a large number of alloys and temperatures are under consideration, and the precision of experimental measurements is not required. The activity coefficient can be freed from the isothermal restriction of Langenberg's calculation if it is assumed that the solution is "regular". This is a reasonably good assumption for solutions of nitrogen in iron alloys, because usually they are dilute and the heat of solution is relatively small. The presence of large amounts of certain alloying elements would make this assumption less tenable.3 One of the properties of a regular solution is: when "f" is the activity coefficient of a solute and "T" is the temperature in OK. If the activity coefficients at temperatures T and T2 are denoted by subscripts 1 and 2 respectively: The activity coefficient of nitrogen in a complex alloy then can be calculated at any temperature from the sum of the effects of the other solutes on the activity coefficient of nitrogen at 1600°C. It will be convenient to incorporate this expression into an equation which will give directly the logarithm of the solubility of nitrogen at any temperature in the presence of alloys. Two constants, the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron at 1600 "C and the partial molar heat of solution of nitrogen in iron are required. The heat of solution value of 1400 cal at 1600 °C quoted by Kubaschewski and vans will be used. The accuracy of the calculation will suffer if the heat of solution should change materially with temperature. In the absence of experimental data on the temperature dependence of this quantity, it will be expedient to restrict the application of the calcula-

IN my review a year ago I pointed out that a small coal-mining companies as well as large had decided that the so called ?central shop? was a benefit. These central shops replaced in a large measure the commercial shops operated by those who have no direct connection with production of cod. Central shops in this time of salvage and major repairs have proved their worth. In addition, many of the larger companies had in their central shops equipment available for the production of many thousands of parts for our vast war machine and, as subcontractors, are doing this type of work. This is a real contribution to the war endeavor. Lack of new supplies has resulted in exhaustion of those stocks formerly stored or hidden in underground shanties. Stress measurements taken at Climax, El Teniente, Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines indicate that the deposits cited are generally subject to an inclined stress field that can be highly anisotropic. The horizontal stresses vary significantly between deposits and exceed the measured vertical stresses at Henderson and El Teniente mines. Experience at Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines is used to suggest a relationship between cavability and the premining stress. In poorly fractured, high strength rock masses, high stresses can assist the caving process. In well fractured, low strength rock masses, caving is ensured by breakage along fracture planes. The relationship between ground weight and the premining stress is also investigated. Ground weight problems appear to be most related to the competence of the ground rather than the magnitude of the premining stress as supported by experience at Climax and El Teniente mines. Recent developments in block caving favor the extraction of poorly fractured, high stressed rock. Accompanying the development of these deposits are new problems such as rock bursts. These pose particular problems to mine designers in that no experience currently exists in combatting rock burst problems at block caving mines.

IN spite of the fact that in 1944 Canada experienced a decline in production of all her leading base metals-nickel, zinc, lead, and copper; despite uncured headaches in the coal-mining industry; and cheerfully ignoring a still further drop in gold, the most valuable product of her mines, which had the lowest output of any year since 1931, the Canadian miner retains the traditional optimism of miners everywhere as he looks forward to the postwar period. Some factors should keep the Canadian mining industry from being too optimistic of the coming era of peace, but the fraternity generally holds that its confident attitude towards the future is based on sound reasons. The decline in production in the Canadian mining industry last year can be almost wholly attributed to the serious shortage of labor and the difficulty in obtaining transport and supplies in remote areas. Some falling off occurred in the demand for certain strategic metals, but the diversion of gold miners, especially, without replacements being obtainable, to direct war work or allied pursuits, was certainly the principal cause of the reduced output in 1944. But that is a situation which will right itself at the close of the conflict.

SELF-DIFFUSION of iron in austenite is a process which may play a significant role in some of the practically important reactions which occur in solid irons and steels. It also provides a system in which the interaction of vacancies on substitutional sites and atoms in interstitial positions may be investigated. For both purposes, accurate values of the diffusivities are required. Two sets of previous measurements exist, each containing features which require checking. In the course of an investigation to determine the rate of diffusion of iron in certain steels, Garwick and Rosenqvist' measured the self-diffusion coefficient of iron in a 0.10 pct* C steel and obtained a dicated that while at lower temperatures D increased with increasing carbon content, at the higher temperatures it first increased and then decreased. At the same time the activation energy decreased linearly from a value of 69,000 cal per g-atom for pure iron to 33,000 cal per g-atom at 1.06 pct C. This rapid decrease in activation energy implies that iron at higher temperatures within the austenite range would diffuse more slowly in high carbon steels than in steels of lower carbon content. Experimental Procedure The radioactive iron used in this work was obtained from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The unit consisted of about 1 microcurie each of Fe7 and Fe It was allowed to decay for two years. At the end of this time most of the Fe with a half-life of 46.3 days, had decayed, while most of the original Fe(half-life 2.91 years) still remained. The iron as chloride was extracted into an ether layer, using the method of Ashley and M~rray. After evaporation of the ether the iron chloride was dissolved in 250 ml of aqueous solution containing 2.4 gpl Fe. The compositions of the steels used are listed in Table I. Disks of ¾ in. diam and about ¼ in. thick were machined from these steels for use in diffusion couples. The disks were surface ground on both sides to ensure parallel opposite faces. Joseph E. Thropp, Jr., Indiana Harbor, Ind.:—To what do you attribute the fact that in some localities the by-product coke sells at a premium over the ordinary bee-hive coke for foundry use ? If the cell-structure is preferably soft and rather thick in coke for foundry use, as I understand it, do you mean that by-product coke has soft and thick cell-walls ? William H. Blauvelt, Syracuse, N. Y.:—As I say in one of the paragraphs of my paper, the tendency seems to be towards the manufacture of foundry- and furnace-coke under somewhat different conditions. The development of the best cell-structure in coke, of course, has not reached perfection, but we are making progress, and we are inclined to believe that under ordinary conditions the best furnace-coke, that is, coke with the hard cell-wall and the well-developed cell, is produced at fast coking-time and high heats, whereas the best foundry-coke seems to be produced at somewhat lower heats. In one of our plants we are making furnace-coke in 16-hr. coking-time, and foundry-coke in 20-hr. time. Foundry-men want the strong, tough coke. I think the furnace-men present will agree that the best furnace-practice requires a hard coke, with a well-developed cell-structure. Replying to the question as to the reason for higher prices being realized for by-product foundry-coke than for bee-hive coke, of course, the immediate reason is that it suits the foundry-men better. Perhaps one cause may be that we are able, by the selection of coals, which is not usually practicable at bee-hive plants, to get a quality and analysis best suited to foundry-work, with high carbon-content, and with cell-structure and physical strength especially suited to the foundry-men's ideas.
