General expressions are derived relating the streaming potential to the electrochemical potential of a permeable junction separating two electrolytic solutions. By the methods of irreversible thermodynamics, these potentials are related to the flux of mobile species arising from differences in pressure and chemical composition. The flux is conveniently expressed as a transference number, the equivalents of a mobile species transferred through the junction per faraday of electricity. At constant pressure, the flux equation gives the electrochemical potential across the permeable junction. The streaming potential across the junction is obtained by imposing the condition of constant chemical composition. The familiar expression for the borehole SP is shown to be a particular solution of the general flux equation. The derived exprersions were verified in experiments with seven shale samples. Both the theory and experimental data provide additional proof of the presence and magniturle of the streaming potential in shales. INTRODUCTION In the interpretation of electric logs, there has been much concern over the correction to be made to the recorded SP for an electrokinetic or streaming potential originating from the difference in pressure between the mud column and the formation. It was long recognized by M. R. J. Wyllie that such an electrokinetic potential source mas in the mud cake opposite permeable sands.' More recently, M. Gondouin and C. Scala2 showed an additional but opposing electrokinetic source of potential to be in shale beds. Their work was supported by the very extensive and excellent work of Hill and Anderson.3 n the present contribution, the general relationships between the electrochemical potential and the corresponding streaming or electrokinetic potential are examined and clarified. A notable advance towards understanding the relation between the various sources of electrical potential in a borehole has been the application of the now common methods of irreversible thermodynamics to describe the passage of ions and water through charged electrolyte junctions such as in shales.' The advantages of these methods are twofold. Unlike classical thermodynamics, they can be applied to non-equilibrium sys- tems, i.e., systems in which flow takes place, provided the flow processes have reached a steady state. They also permit conventional thermodynamic properties to be related to the steady-state dynamic properties. These methods arc used here specifically to derive expressions relating the potential behavior of shales in terms of ion and water transport. Experimental verification of the expression for the shale streaming potential is given which in turn offers theoretical support to the existence of a streaming potential in shales.' Importantly, the relative contribution of transport parameters to the SP is clarified. The theoretical treatment is essentially that of Lori-mer, Boterenbrood and Hermans3 ut has been extended to derive the general expression for the SP.

CAREFUL research into the nature of the metallic state has yet to discover, with any certainty, its essential quality. We do riot yet know, for sure, what it is that makes the metallic elements different from, if not actually unique among, all created things. We do know, of course, that metals have certain more or less characteristic properties-they are hard, strong, and tough, and good conductors of heat and electricity, and these so-called metallic properties provide a definition of a sort. How- ever, it is the structure rather than the behavior of the metals which gives the really fundamental information necessary to the understanding of metallicity. But this information is not easily obtained. Nature has a way of keeping secrets. But happily we do possess some knowledge of how a metal is built up, and it is this matter, rather than the presentation of a formal definition, that will be discussed here.

Potash is a generic term used to describe a number of compounds containing the element potassium (K), which is one of the three major plant nutrients. Potash content of these compounds is commonly expressed as percentage potassium oxide (K20), and the market value of the products is usually dependent on contained K20. Most of the potash produced (approximately 95%) is used in agriculture as fertilizer. Potash products today are shipped by producing countries all over the world to meet the need for increased food production. WORLD POTASH RESERVES Apparent world potash reserves are shown in Table 15.2B.1 and total some 96 billion mt of recoverable potassium oxide. The Canadian reserves account for approximately one-half the known world reserves. The reserves shown represent the potassium oxide content of a variety of potash-bearing ores. The major ore is sylvinite (a mechanical mixture of KC1 and NaCl) from which KC1 or sylvite is recovered (63.2% K20 equivalent). Other ores, such as langbeinite (potassium, magnesium sulfate-22.7% K20) and carnallite (potassuim magnesuim chloride-17.0% K20) are also mined in various parts of the world, mainly for the potassium content. Theoretically, potassium is available in almost unlimited qualities from brines and saline waters. To date, the cost of recovery from salt brines has been greater than the costs by mining operations, but new technology could make brines and seawater an increasingly important source. POTASH PRODUCTION Potash production dates back to the 1860s in Germany, which was the only recorded producing country until 1912. By 1912 Germany was producing approximately 1 million tpy of K2O equivalent. Production began in France in 1913 and in the United States in 1915. World potash production and consumption are shown in Table 15.2B.2 for the years 1950-51 through 1967-68. In 1967 and 1968 the major potash-pro¬ducing countries in order of importance were those listed in Table 15.2B.3. By 1972 Canadian production had outstripped U.S. production. The variation of point of zero charge (PZC) of both simple and complex oxide minerals was studied as a function of aging time in water. In most cases the PZC's of the simple oxides moved toward more basic pH values with aging time. Evidence to date suggests that this phenomenon relates to dissolution of disturbed layers on the mineral's surface accompanied by later readsorption of metal hydroxy species back onto these surfaces. The readsorption takes place after the solution becomes supersaturated with respect to some crystalline phase. The variation of PZC's of complex oxides as a function of aging time in water is apparently related to several different mechanisms. In a few cases PZC shifted toward more basic values with time. This shift could be attributed to much the same mechanism as for simple oxides. In most cases, however, PZC of complex oxides shifted toward more acid values with aging time, probably because of loss to solution of soluble cations whose oxides possess basic PZC's.

An investigation into the effect of a material's slip character on its high strain fatigue properties has been carried out using copper and Cu-7.5 wt pct A1 as representative wavy and planar slip mode materials, respectively. In copper, the constant term and exponent in the Coffin-Manson equation, ?EpNf1/2 = const, are unaffected by the temperature of testing or the history of the metal. On the other hand, in Cu-7.5 wl pcl Al, while the exponent is invariant, the constant is increased with respect to copper and increased further with decrease in temperature. The life in Cu-7.5 wt pct A1 is double that of copper at room temperature and about four times at 78°K. Fractoflaphic studies indicate that these diffevences in life are associated with the early stages of cracking. In copper, severe surface rumpling provides crack nuclei at pain boundaries independent of' testing temperature or the history of the metal. In Cu-7.5 wt pct Al, the planar slip mode of deformation prevents grain boundary folding; crack nucleation is therefore mainly transgranular and the increase in life with respect to copper is associated with a prolonged linking-up stage of such transgranulay cracks. At the lower temperature the increased difficulty of cross slip inhibits multiplication of trans-granular cracks and retards the linking-up process, giving a further enhaancement in life. It is expected that such behavior will be found general in materials of wavy and planar slip mode, respectively. STAGE II crack propagation in high strain fatigue takes place by a repetitive process of crack tip blunting in the tension part of a fatigue cycle followed by resharpening of the crack in the compression part.1-3 This mechanism has come to be called the "plastic relaxation process".3 At very high strains (lives to failure less than 103 cycles), most of the life of a specimen is spent in crack propagation by the plastic relaxation process.4,5 Since the differences in the cyclic strain hardening behavior of metals and alloys are comparatively small in this strain range,6,7 the amount of blunting at a crack tip depends primarily on the applied strain amplitude. The rate of crack propagation in this life range is therefore nearly constant with respect to material and temperature of testing. In the longer life portion of the high strain fatigue range (l03 to 103 cycles to failure), a considerable fraction of the lives is spent in crack initiation and Stage I growth. Grain boundaries have frequently4,5,8 been found to be the sites for this growth which is also associated with a surface folding process.4'5 Such folding behavior may also be general in any material having a grain structure and capable of plastic deformation. It has therefore been suggested475 that the universality of the Coff in-Manson law,9'10 constant,* where ?Ep is the plastic strain range and Nf the number of cycles to failure, is reflected in the approximate invariance of both the crack initiation and propagation behavior. It happens that, in most investigations of the phenomena associated with failure,4,5,8 materials with a wavy slip mode have been used as vehicles for the studies, or else "normally" planar slip mode materials have been tested under conditions giving rise to wavy glide deformation, e.g., stainless steels cycled at high temperature.'' IT has been known for sometime that in an ionic lattice, such as that of Ag2S or FeO, the migration velocity of the anion may differ markedly from that of the cation, the cation being usually the more mobile. It has been shown, for example, that during the formation of silver sulfide tarnish on silver, the tarnish layer grows principally by the motion of silver cations through an essentially stationary silver sulfide lattice. Similarly, the growth of wüstite scale on iron proceeds principally by motion of iron ions, this being accomplished with the aid of vacant iron lattice sites into which the iron may readily move. Likewise investigations of solid solutions of various salts show that there is usually considerable difference in the mobility of the different cations. Measurements of the mobility of various metals in liquid mercury indicate that the various metals move at different rates relative to the mercury. In view of the foregoing it seems reasonable to suppose that when any single phase solution is acted upon by a field, the atoms of different elements respond in different ways; in particular, that the force arising from a particular concentration gradient in a binary alloy would cause the atoms of one component to move with a drift velocity which is in general different from that of the atoms of the other component. The recent experiments of Smigelskas and Kirkendall1 support this viewpoint, since they found, in essence, that during diffusion in alpha brass zinc moves appreciably faster than copper. This was evidenced by the relative motion of inert molybdenum wires. Such a phenomenon is incompatible with the place interchange theory of diffusion proposed by several authors, most recently by Birchenall and Mehl.2 This theory has, however, also been questioned3.4 for other reasons, principally because of the high energy required for direct atomic interchange. The rather large difference between self-diffusivity, as determined by tracer technique, and mutual diffusivity, as determined with the aid of another element at low concentration, might also be interpreted as favoring the above idea; however, Birchenall and Mehl have pointed out that there is another possible interpretation of this difference; this is discussed later. A rather interesting and pertinent observation was made by Schwartz,5 who noticed that tungsten lamp filaments, heated by direct current, commonly fail by necking down in the region at the temperature gradient near the positive end, with a concomitant swelling at the corresponding position near the negative end. He introduces considerable auxiliary evidence to show that this phenomenon is occasioned by the motion of tungsten cations which migrate in the high temperature region from the positive end toward the negative end. The mechanism of this migration is not clearly understood. If, however, this experimental evidence be accepted, we are forced to conclude that alloying elements in the tungsten may migrate by the same or a similar mechanism, whatever it may be, at a greater or lesser rate, thus giving rise

It is shown experimentally that, by making use of the coupled S-O reaction in ionic melts, it is possible to transfer slclJur or oxygen from a lozv to a high chemical potential through an ionic nzenzbrane. This uphill transfer of sulfur is accompanied by a counter downhill transfer of oxygen and vice versa. The Materials balance shows that the amoulits of sul -fur and oxygen lost or gained by one system are the same as those gained or lost by the other systenz — the two systejns being separated by an iofzic membmne. The systems used in these experi?nents were solid Mn-MnS-Mno and liquid Fe-S-0. Sufficient results were obtained Lo study the kinetics of the transfer and the indications are that the counter diffusion of sulfide and oxide iojzs in the membrane is the rate controlling process. WHEN an ionic oxide-melt reacts with an atmosphere containing sulfur and oxygen-bear ing gases the following reaction occurs: 1/2 S2 (gas) +O2- (melt) = S2- (melt) + 1/2 0, (gas) [1] Under the restrictions that i) electric conductance in the melt is purely ionic and ii) each constituent element in the melt does not change valence, the solution of an atom of sulfur in the melt will result in the evolution of an atom of oxygen, so that the electric neutrality is maintained. For a given temperature and melt composition, the equilibrium concentration of sulfur in the melt is determined by the ratio, po2 /ps2 , in the gas phase and not by the individual partial pressures of oxygen and sulfur. This has been demonstrated by a number of investigators, for example by Richardson and withers', Fincham and Richardson,la by St Pierre and Chipman,' and by Turkdogan and Darken.3 In his Howe Memorial Lecture for 1961, Darken discussed the possibility of uphill pumping of sulfur through an ionic membrane at the expense of oxygen. TO test the validity of this concept associated with coupled reactions, experiments were carried out in the following manner. A presintered mixture of Mn-MnS-MnO and prefused mixture of Fe-S-0, contained in platinum and iridium crucibles, respectively, and separated by a thin layer of soda-glass (to act as an ionic membrane), were placed side by side in an evacuated silica capsule and sealed. This was then kept at 1400°K for a required time to allow Reaction [11 to occur via the ionic membrane. When partial equilibrium is reached, the ratios Po2 /pS2, for systems on either side of the membrane, are equal and the flux of sulfur and oxygen through the membrane becomes zero, although the individual partial pressures po2 andp,, in these two systems may differ considerably.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map. Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90° in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. HISTORY. On the discovery of the silver-lead hearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of abort 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. At the western extremity and near the Carrolena mine, a small town called San Pedro was built. The ruined walls of the houses form a single street, and all is over-

THE properties of the Patiño Mines and Enterprises Consolidated, Inc., a New York corporation, are near Llallagua in the department of Chayanta in the west central part of Bolivia, South America, about 80 miles southeast of Oruro and 250 miles southeast of La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia and its virtual capital. The properties are accessible by railroad from three points on the west coast-from Mollendo, Peru, across Lake Titicaca, from Arica by way of La Paz, and from Antofagasta, Chile. The latter route, although the longest, is recommended by the companies as affording a more gradual introduction to the high altitudes; the mine being 13,000 ft. above sea level. The company operates its own railroad from its properties at Uncia to Machacamarca on the Chile & Bolivia R. R., a distance of 60 miles. This railroad is well equipped and well operated, and its location among the mountains surrounding Uncia represents excellent engineering skill. In fact all of the railroads, although they are of only a meter gage, are remarkable for the excellence of their construction, the arrangement of their dining and sleeping cars and the precision of their operation. There is only one drawback to rail- road and hotel accommodations and that is the absence of heating facilities, which does not seem to affect the natives but keeps a tenderfoot's teeth chattering continually. The company is a consolidation of the Patiño company, owning properties at Uncia, with the Compafiia Estanfera de Llallagua, a' Chilean corporation owning contiguous properties at Llallagua. Before the consolidation these companies were deadly enemies, and there still remain at the surface plant at Uncia the fortifications and underground defences provided during the warfare between the two factions. Also, in the Azul, or "Blue" tunnel at the junction line between the two properties is a strong steel barricade still bearing marks of the bullets fired during the various armed tilts between the workmen of the two companies. The headquarters for the mining operations and the milling plant have been moved since the consolidation from the original location at Uncia to the Llallagua side of the mountain, where the Chilean company's operations were carried on. The historic old town of Uncia, with its massive stone buildings of Spanish design, is a wreck, while the Llallagua side is being rapidly built up with modern structures.

THE high prices which lead and zinc have commanded during recent months have given a great impetus to search for workable deposits of these metals, and there has accordingly risen a demand for information about deposits which have been worked in the past and which might possibly be opened up anew under these more favorable conditions. Production of zinc and lead in Canada has been on the increase during the last few years. In 1924, 175,- 485,499 lb. of lead with a computed value of $14,221,- 345 were mined. Of this, 96 per cent. was produced in British Columbia, 3 per cent. in Ontario, while Quebec and the Mayo district of the Yukon accounted for the remaining one per cent. During the same year the production of zinc amounted to 98,909,077 lb.. valued at $6,274,791. Of this 96,000,069 lb. were produced in British Columbia and the remaining 2,909,008 in Quebec. The large producer of zinc and also of lead is the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B. C. In comparison with the Sullivan, the deposits which are known to occur in eastern Canada are relatively small. Two, however, the Kingdoll lead mine at Galetta, Ontario, and the Tetreault zinc property at Notre Dame des Anges, Quebec, are steady producers. The object of this paper is to describe briefly these and other deposits of eastern Canada, to show their relation to geological events and to point out what are the chances of any of those which are idle at present developing into active producers or what are the possibilities of new deposits being discovered.

Lime made in a coal-fired rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh- percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly three orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically intert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chromium and nickel has been measured in the temperature range 1550° to 1700°C at nitrogen pressures to 1 ah. The solubility surface has been determined for the iron corner of the liquid metallic ternary to 21 pct Cr and 11 pct Ni. The nitrogen solubility increases markedly with increasing chromium concentration. The effect of nickel and the bilinear effect of chromium and nickel are less pronounced. The solubility data are presented, and interaction coefficients are determined from them. THE solubility of nitrogen has been determined in liquid Fe-Cr-Ni binary and ternary alloys. The work in this laboratory has been directed toward a relatively limited composition range, that is to 20 pct Cr and 10 pct Ni. Humbert and Elliott1 studied the entire ternary; but their investigation was, understandably, limited in this region. The region considered here is of the greatest commercial interest. Knowledge of the solubility in these alloys is important for accurate control of the nitrogen levels in various stainless alloys. Also, the solution behavior is of theoretical interest because of its deviations from ideal dilute solution rules at moderate chromium levels. The nitrogen solubility in the iron binaries has been reviewed extensively by Pehlke and Elliott,2 particularly with respect to the dilute solution interaction parameters. More recently, there has been some interest in accurate descriptions of solute interactions in non-dilute solutions. Most of the investigators have adopted a power series fit to accommodate any non-linearity of the data. The Taylor series expansion is adopted here, using Scimar's notation3 for the interaction coefficients. An alternate method, instead of requiring higher-order expansions, is to restrict the range of the composition variables. A planar solubility surface may be fitted to the data and its range of validity determined. If the axes of this region are displaced from the usual origin—the solvent pure iron—a change in standard state is required for the solution reaction. The standard state for nitrogen in iron is commonly taken as the hypothetical 1 wt pct solution of nitrogen in pure iron. However, for an alloy of appreciable solute concentration, e.g., 13 pct Cr or 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni, it would be convenient to use that base composition as the solvent and redefine the solution reaction in terms of that particular solvent. A brief derivation follows, defining the free energy of solution in an alloy solvent. Following the treatment by Darken and Gurry,4 for a nitrogen pressure of 1 atm: N (pure component) = N (1 wt pct in solvent) [l] AG=RT ln100/ wt pct N in solvent Taking this reaction for an alloy solvent less the same reaction for a pure iron solvent the relation between nitrogen in pure iron and an alloy is: N (1 wt pct in Fe) = N (1 wt pct in alloy) [2] AG = RT[ln(wt pct N in Fe) - ln(wt pct N in alloy)] Adding ½ N2(g) to each side and subtracting N (1 wt pct in Fe) = ½N2(g), the total free energy for solution of nitrogen in an alloy, referred to nitrogen at infinite dilution, is given by: ½N2 (g) = N (wt pct in alloy) L3] AG°3 = -RT ln(wt pct N in alloy )PN =1 atm Interaction parameters have their usual meaning when ?G°/RT is differentiated with respect to the proper composition coordinate. If desired, the dilute alloy treatment may be utilized with the new reference composition as the solvent. This has. indeed, been done by Small and pehlke5 in their analysis of nitrogen solution in liquid 18-8 alloys. The Sieverts' technique was used for this investigation on an apparatus previously described.6 The materials used in this program were: Ferrovac-E iron, 99.95 pct, Crucible Steel Co.: chromium, 99.95 pct, Union Carbide Metals Co.; nickel, 99.9 pct, International Nickel Co. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. RESULTS The locations of the ternary compositions investigated are shown in Fig. 1. The data of Turnock7 and small8 have been alluded to in other papers.5'6 There were no departures from Sieverts' law observed for

STEEL is the basic metal, the main metallic prop of the modern industrial world, a good gage for measuring the state of our complex economy. Any who had doubts on that score should have had them dispelled by the many evidences of public concern over the affairs of the steel industry in recent months. I do not need to relate the various criticisms of the industry, nor the questions about its policies and performance which have come in a rising flood, especially from unthinking and irresponsible sources. Introduction Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corp. (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corp., is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, UT. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt, and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The CSL Sulfate of Potash Complex: The GSL potash complex (depicted in [Fig. 1]) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit containing primarily kainite (KC1 . MgSO4 . 3H20), schoenite (K2SO4 . MgS04 . 6H20), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KC1 . MgC12 . 6H20) and epsomite (MgSOq . 7H20). Other minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. During a "short" evaporation season, the tonnage deposited decreases, but depending upon the short-term weather, the potash mineral content can vary greatly. A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. An analysis of the design of medium to hard rock tunneling machines is presented. The developed equations are used to compare performances and machine requirements using kerf and fixed pick cutters to bore a given rock. With the use of pick cutters, required thrusts can be greatly reduced and still achieve the same boring rate as with present day tooth or kerf cutters. It appears that the cutting coefficient, which for most boring machines is of the order of 0.1, should be increased to one or larger to facilitate rock removal by cutting rather than grinding. The depth of cut and the indexing distance should be greatly increased to make use of inherent rock weakness.

A value for the enthalpy of formation of z2 of -3.14 i 0.21 kcal per g-atom has been measured by the technique of acid solution calorimetry. This result is in quite good agreement with two earlier determinations by tin solution calorimetry and by direct reaction caloriinetry, and averaging of values determined from the three independent calorimetric techniques gives enhanced precision and accuracy with AHh8 (CaMgZ) = - 3.15 i 0.05 kcal per g-atom. For comparison with experimental data, values for the enthalpies of formation of CaMgz, SrMgz, and BaMgz of -9.8, -7.9, and -2.8 kcal per g-atom were estimated from a calculation based on the LVigizer-Seitz approximation as modified by Raimes for polyvalent elements. While complete quantitative accord between these calculated talues and available experimental data is lacking, nonetheless numerical accord is better than might be expected and, more importantly, parallel numerical trends are observed between experimental and calculated vnlues. WITHIN the past decade the enthalpy of formation of CaMg, has been determined a) from measurement of magnesium vapor pressures over binary Ca-Mg alloys,' b) by solution calorimetry with liquid tin as the solvent,' c) from measurement of hydrogen vapor pressures over ternary alloys of calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen,3 and d) by direct reaction alorimetr. The value from tin solution calorimetry is the most precise and is probably the most reliable, and this value is within the quoted uncertainties of the other three experimental results. The overall agreement among the four independent investigations is quite good, particularly so when the diversity of techniques is noted. On the basis of this agreement, CaMgz was chosen as a test material to evaluate the operation of a newly constructed apparatus for the determination of enthalpies of formation of intermetallic phases by acid solution calorimetry. This was believed to be a severe test because of the high chemical reactivity of both calcium and magnesium which reactivity presumably accounts for the fact that an early determination5 of the enthalpies of formation of Ca-Mg alloys by acid solution calorimetry yielded values significantly more negative than the four recent determinations. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND MATERIALS Experimental Apparatus. The enthalpy of formation of CaMg, was determined by measuring the difference between the heat evolved when dissolving the metallic compound and the heat evolved when dissolving equivalent amounts of unreacted metallic elements in hydro- chloric acid. This was done differentially with an apparatus consisting of twin calorimeters which were constructed to be as nearly identical as possible. The advantage of differential calorimetry is that systematic errors arising from the individual calorimeter design tend to cancel. A schematic representation of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. A dead air space around both calorimeters was provided by a large, thermally insulated jacket. Each calorimeter consisted of a 2-liter Dewar flask which was completely enclosed in a copper container. Each Dewar contained 1600 g of 2.5hr HCl to act as the solvent, and thermal effects resulting from solvent evaporation were minimized by covering the acid with 50 g of mineral oil. There was no detectable reaction between the acid and the mineral oil. Equivalent amounts of mechanical energy were added to the calorimeters through twin stirring rods which were driven at the same rpm by a single motor with the intent of the stirring being to maintain thermal equilibrium throughout the solvent. To calibrate the heat capacities of the calorimeters, known amounts of electrical energy could be added by passing measured voltages and currents for known times through submerged heaters, approximately 20 ohms, which were wound noninductively from Manganin wire. A 6-v storage battery was used as a power source, and a dummy heater was used as an exercise circuit to allow the battery to stabilize at a constant electromotive force before energizing one or the other of the calorimetric heaters. A type K-2 potentiometer was used to measure the potential drop across an energized heater while the current was determined from the potential drop across an external standard resistor.
