Niobium-tin has been prepared on insulating suhstrates hby simultaneous hydrogen reduction of gaseous niobium and tin halides. Stoichiometric material is greater than 98.8pct theoretical density, appears to he single-phase, and has a total impirity level less than 0.3 at. pct. Transition temperatures and lattice constants may he related to composition. Typical current densities in various fields and orientations are given. IT is known that Nb3Sn carries large current densities in high fields, 1 and exhibits an unusually high transition temperature2 and critical field.3 For these reasons high-field solenoids have been constructed of this material.4 Because of the emphasis on solenoid fabrication, much of the materials research has been directed toward development of wire geometries wherein the brittle Nb3Sn is supported by a more malleable metal or alloy. There are, however, basic studies and applications that can be carried out only on Nb3Sn supported by an insulator. Insulating substrates are desirable for a number of reasons: the substrate does not interact with applied or induced currents and fields; diffusion of metallic species into the de- posit is avoided, both during the preparation and during subsequent heat treatment; irradiated samples are not more active than the deposit itself. Unsupported Nb3Sn geometries may also be prepared by preferential chemical dissolution of the insulating substrate. This report describes the preparation and properties of Nb3Sn deposits on ceramic substrates. Experiments currently utilizing material prepared in the manner described in this report include the following: dependence of current-carrying properties on field strength and orientation 5,6 radiation damage,7,8 tunneling,9 thermal conductivity (substrate removed),1° microwave surface impedance," tube magnetization,6,12 resistivity as a function of temperature,13 and current density and transition temperature as a function of annealing.14 Possible practical applications include magnetic shielding, superconductor generators, and frictionless bearings. PREPARATION Methods for the deposition of elemental niobium and tin by hydrogen reduction of the gaseous metal halides have been known for some time,15,18 but only recently a procedure was developed in this laboratory17 for the codeposition of these two metals on a hotwire as the intermetallic compound, Nb3Sn. This method of simultaneous hydrogen reduction of the gaseous niobium and tin chlorides is used for the preparation of Nb3Sn On ceramic substrates. The procedure differs from that employed on a hot wire in that insulating substrates cannot conveniently be heated to temperatures greater than their surround-

INDUSTRIAL mineral history shows that the entrance of new, nonmetallic minerals into commercial production can be expected to occur from time to time. Latest entrant into the field is wollastonite. Except for one short-lived period in Kern County, Calif., starting in 1933, wollastonite has never before been produced on a commercial scale. But the signs are up for its entrance as an economic factor in the mineral market. Small scale experimental production from a deposit near Willsboro, N. Y., started about 1943. A pilot plant was built in 1949-50 and irregular, small scale, production has continued. In early 1951 Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. of Boston, world's largest producer of carbon black, took an operational lease on the property to study the deposits and make market surveys. This became Cabot's first venture in the mineral field, when they took over operations and began design of a new mill, expected in production in 1953. Properties The properties and major uses of wollastonite are comparable to New York fibrous talc. It has about the same specific gravity and index of refraction as talc, but is somewhat whiter and softer. The two most important fields of use, paint and ceramics, are the same as for talc. Ground wollastonite has a fiber length as much as 13 to 15 times the diameter. This particular property makes it applicable in the paint field and others. In addition, the length-diameter ratio may be controlled to rather narrow limits by choice of grinding method. Another important commercial property is brightness or whiteness. Wollastonite reads from 92 to 96 pct of MgO on the G.E. brightness meter for a 99 pct -325 mesh grind. Purity and uniformity of product are important. Chemically, the wollastonite now being mined analyzes SiO2 51.76, CaO 47.56, FeO 0.46, MnO 0.04, and H2O 0.09 pct. Theoretically pure wollastonite analyzes SiO2 51.75 and CaO 48.25 pct. This analysis indicates over 98 pct calcium silicate, with only small amounts of contaminating ingredients. That these ingredients are not detrimental to color or brightness is shown by the high brightness value of the fine ground material. [ ] By-product calcium silicate from electric furnace production of phosphoric acid has little physical re-semblance. to this wollastonite, being an off color white, and lacking in fibrous crystalline character. Minerology Wollastonite is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3, a white, medium hard, fibrous mineral. In this deposit wollastonite occurs as well crystallized aggregates of bladed crystals intergrown with garnet, and with a few percent of green diopside. The beneficiated product is about 75 pct wollastonite, 15 pct garnet, and 10 pct waste, largely middling. Wollastonite-garnet ore occurs in at least two beds. The main bed, varying in true thickness from 30 to 70 ft, dips into the hill at an average 30° and is enclosed in gneisses. Diamond drilling has proven the orebody to an average depth of 200 ft along 2000 ft of outcrop with adequate tonnage for many years of quarry operation. The wollastonite-garnet ratio varies locally, but average composition is uniform over long distances. A friable ore, it is easy to drill, shoot, and crush. Beneficiation Unlike talc this ore has to be beneficiated. Successful treatment depends upon the fact that it contains virtually nothing but wollastonite, garnet and a minor percentage of diopside. A very pure wollastonite product can be made by high intensity magnetic and/or gravity separation methods.

DISCUSSION John G. Barry (Mexico)—"The Nerinea limestone," writes W. H. Triplett, p. 584, "is ... medium-bedded (0.5 to 1.0 m)...." This is the Zuloaga formation. It has always been described as thick-bedded (1.0 to 3.0 m). "Whether the marls and shales were less amenable to replacement," he goes on to say, ". . . is a matter of opinion." In general, it is probable that the thinner-bedded formations were less competent than the nearby thicker-bedded, so that the latter produced pre-mineral breccias when all were subjected to flexing stresses. With reference to Mr. Triplett's analysis, p. 584, under Lower Cretaceous, in the Taraises and Cupido formations some few horizons should be considered as possibly containing hidden orebodies. In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. The volcanics are also said to occur in considerable amount in the Mazapil valley.'' Turning now to the remarks under Regional Structure, p. 586, as partly indicated on the general map, Fig. 4, the Mazapil Mountains of the Mazapil region are a continuous, U-shaped range including a northern leg of some 24 km, a southern leg of similar length, and a uniting base which lies to the East and which measures some 10 km in a S 20 E direction. Thus the U-shaped mountains are continuous through a length of 58 km and also contain one continuous anticline, the adjacent valleys being synclinal. The northern leg of the U is called the La Caja range, the base is called the Concepcion del Oro range, and the southern leg the Santa Rosa range. The ranges in northeastern Zacatecas and southern Coahuila contain anticlines and the valleys contain synclines, which where thin are necessarily highly compressed isoclines with very steep dips. Many of the anticlines also have isoclinal components which are overturned, original mushroom tops being indicated. The anticline in the base of the U of the Mazapil Region, Concepcion del Oro range, is a recumbent anticline, over to the ENE, with a necessarily subjacent recumbent syncline.

A combination of two factors in addition to the current Federal drilling and price regulations reduced by 120 from I942 the number of new wells completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during the year. No new prospective area was found comparable to the Armbrust gas pool, Westmoreland Co., which accounted for a seventh of the last year's drilling, and it is considered doubtful whether, even if such a field had been discovered, the drilling contractors, who have been seriously affected by the manpower shortage, could have drilled many more wells than they did during the year. New wells totaling 445 were completed for a combined footage of over 1,250,000 Dry holes numbered 131 and had a footage of nearly 400,000. Old wells drilled deeper total 55, of which 17 were found nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil Oil completions yielded an initial of only slightly over one hundred barrels from 21 wells for about the same per well average as that of a year ago. However, 65 bbl. of this total came from two wells in two new strikes. The footage drilled of nearly 33,000 gives an average of nearly I00 ft. less per well than a year ago. Two old wells drilled deeper had a combined initial of only 4 bbl. The largest oil well of the year, 40 bbl., was found in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of 3492 ft. in German township, Fayette County. The location is several miles east of the nearest oil production hut as the area that could be occupied by a pool is fairly well delimited by drilling, the extent of this production would not appear to be large. The other notable oil production was found in the Dunkard (Penna.) sand, Cumberland township, Greene County, at a depth of 1065 ft. Here the first well had an initial of g bbl. and the second 25 bbl. However, a third proved dry, and as this area is also delimited by drilling, the pool doubtless will be of small area. Gas Gas completions yielded an initial of slightly over one hundred million cubic feet per day and new wells, totaling 303, account for all but four million of this volume. Old wells drilled deeper, numbering 35, found gas. The per well average in new drilling of approximately 320 M cu. ft. is nearly 165 M cu. ft. less than a year ago and the total footage is slightly over 830,000, which is about a quarter of a million feet less than in 1942. Average rock pressure of new completions is approximately 365 lb. per sq. in. The entire volume of new production is from the Upper Devonian or higher stratigraphic horizons. In Allegheny County, the grestest activity was in Forward and Plum townships. Wells there account for more than one half the completions. One large well was drilled in Forward township and an open flow of 3.623 million cubic feet was found in an old Gantz (U. Dev.) sand area. The top of the sand was encountered

The system Ta-Rh was investigated over the entire comnposition range using metallogvaphic and X-ray techniques as well as thermal analysis. Terminal solubility limits, solidus temperatures, and the crystal structures of two new intermediate phases were determined. There are five intermediate phases: o, tetragonal, isostructural with o(Fe-Cr); a1, orthorhomnbic : a2, orthorhombic, isostructural with CozSi; 0 3, a high -temperature phase of unknozun structure; and a TaRh3, cubic, AuCu3 structure. a, aL, a,, and a melt peritectically; and a TaRh, has a maximum melting point. Five peritectic and one eutectic reactions occur. THE Ta-Rh phase diagram has not been fully treated in the literature; however, two inter metallic phases have been described.&apos;-&apos; This study attempts to work out the diagram covering the details of phase boundaries as well as the crystallography of the intermediate phases. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Starting materials were tantalum powder of 99.8 pct purity, supplied by National Research Corp., Cambridge, Mass., and rhodium powder of 99.9 pct purity, supplied by Bishop Co., Malvern, Pa. Analyses as given by the manufacturers are presented in Table I. In addition to the spectroscopic analysis, an oxygen analysis has been made of the tantalum powder. After preliminary trials, the standard procedure employed in making the alloys was as follows (see Ref. 4 for further details). The powders were weighed, mixed manually, compacted under 16,000 psi, and arc-melted at not more than 500 amp under thoroughly titanium gettered welding-grade argon of 400 mm Hg pressure. The gettering process was repeated after each melt. It had been shown previously5 that under these conditions no oxygen pick-up exceeding 0.001 pct in a hafnium button could be detected. The buttons, ranging from 5 to 10 g in weight, were inverted or, if possible, crushed and remelted three times. Melting presented no difficulty, except for tantalum-rich al- loys, which showed considerable spashing during melting. The average weight loss of 1 wt pct rose to 2.5 wt pct in these cases. Subsequent melting, however, resulted in losses of less than 0.1 wt pct. The melts obtained frequently showed small in-homogeneities, mostly in the tantalum-rich part of the system below 25 at. pct Rh. This was not due to insufficient blending of the elements, but to crystallization taking place from the cooled bottom. This condition was not improved by further re-melting; therefore the following precautions were taken. Cross sections of as-cast buttons were made. For the investigation only buttons were used where these inhomogeneities did not exceed 1 at. pct (estimated from the amounts of haSeS resent). In addition, only the center portions of such buttdns were utilized to minimize errors. Smaller buttons showed smaller concentration gradients and were used as a check. Finally, all alloys were homogenized to eliminate coring (see below). After this, the error in alloy composition due to inhomogeneity was cl at. pct. In order to confirm the concentrations of the alloys and to provide an impurity check, wet-chemical analyses and oxygen-fusion analyses of four key alloys were carried out. The results, together with the concentrations as calculated with the weight balance method, are presented in Table 11. It was found that for three alloys the agreement is very good (< 0.2

The presence of gypsum in samples subjected to standard core analysis introduces serious errors in the measurement of water saturation and porosity. The magnitude of these errors, depending upon the type of analysis procedure used, has been evaluated experimentally and theoretically. Water-saturated pore volumes determined by vacuum distillation or retort procedures may be too high by as much as 48 per cent of the volume of gypsum present. The maximum error in this value determined by Dean-Stark extraction with toluene is 36 per cent of the gypsum volume. If pore space is measured by a Boyle&apos;s law type porosimeter the maximum erorr due to gypsum is 38 per cent of the original gypsum volume present. The conscientious core analyst may eliminate the errors caused by gypsum by either of two methods. He may apply suitable corrections for the water of crystallization removed from gypsum, or take special precautions to prevent dehydration of gypsum during core cleaning and alzalysis procedures. These alternatives are discussed and methods for obtaining reliable core analysis data are proposed. Gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H2O) occurs as a common mineral in many of the world&apos;s sedimentary basins. In addition to its presence as primary bedded evaporitic deposits, it is often found as secondary replacement zones and pore-fillings in host rocks. That it may cause false indications in porosity, both on neutron logs and in standard core analysis, has been generally recognized. False porosity interpretations from neutron logs result because the chemically bound water in gypsum attenuates neutrons as effectively as free water. Errors in core analysis result when gypsum is dehydrated prior to or during the analysis. Vacuum retort procedures used by many laboratories to determine fluid saturation and porosity effect a complete removal of water of crystallization from gypsum. The crystal water, distilled and collected with free water from the sample, is counted as water-sat11rated pore space. Dehydration of gypsum results in a decrease in volume occupied by calcium sulfate and a corresponding increase in pore volume. Thus, if gypsum is dehydrated by sample cleaning and drying procedures, subsequent porosity measurements with gas expansion or compression instruments will be high. The qualitative effect of gypsum on porosity determinations by retort procedures was discussed in a recent article by Bynum and Koepl3. They concluded that since false porosity was interpreted as being water saturated, determinations of oil content were not affected. Others in the industry, however, have pointed out that porosity values are often used with values of water saturation determined independently, e.g., from electric resistivity logs in making reserve estimates. Values of water saturation calculated from the formation resistivity using the Archie equation, S4= are actually low if values of are high due to gypsum. In this case, false porosity values due to gypsum could cause serious errors in calculations of oil-in-place. This investigation was made to determine quantitatively the effect of gypsum on porosity values determined by different core analysis procedures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Dehydration of Gypsum The extent and rate of removal of water of crystallization from gypsum under conditions encountered in core analysis procedures were studied. Taken for the experiments were three types of relatively pure, naturally occurring gypsum, viz. selenite, satin spar and massive gypsum. Although all samples probably contained trace chemical impurities, each type lost the theoretical amount of water upon complete dehydration. An automatic recording thermobalance, similar to one described by Mauer2, was used to obtain dehydration rate data for samples heated in dry air. Water

G. Ansell and J. Weertman (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Northwestern University, respectively) —The great increase in creep strength that you found in your indium-glass composites is quite striking. You ruled out a decrease in the dislocation source density as an explanation of the reduced creep rates. Could you tell in greater detail why you feel this is an inadequate explanation of the phenomenon. It appears to us that it is a reasonable one. Consider the spacing between the glass spheres in your composites. It is of the order of 10-3 cm. The spacing between dislocations in a (single-phase) annealed metal with a dislocation density of the order of 106 to 107 cm per cm3 also is of the order of 10-3 cm. Therefore it is not reasonable to expect that the arrangement of the dislocation lines is the same in the composite material as it is in pure indium. If the dislocation arrangements are different the density of the dislocation sources likewise will be different. Another way of saying the same thing is the following. The presence of the glass spheres reduces one of the dimensions of the metal phase to 10-3 cm. Thus the metal phase, in effect, is equivalent to a metal whisker or a thin metal film. These are strong because they have so few dislocation sources within them. T. D. Gulden and J. C. Shyne (authors&apos; reply)—It is to be expected that the arrangement of dislocations in the indium-glass composites would be quite different than that observed in annealed pure metals. The dislocations probably exist primarily as segments connecting the dispersed particles. These segments and discontinuities at the very large area of particle-metal interface could act as dislocation sources. For this reason it was considered unlikely that the very high observed creep strengths were due to a low density of dislocation sources. A more likely explanation is that the distance a dislocation can glide is limited by the interparticle spacing. The particles averaged about twenty in diam and were less than 10 µ apart in the 40 pet composite. It seems reasonable to assume that a dislocation loop in a volume of metal surrounded by these relatively large particles would not bow out around them but would be restricted to the region between particles. A general expression for creep rate is given by the product of the dislocation source density, the average rate at which loops are generated from a source, and the average area swept out by a loop times the Burgers vector magnitude. Assuming that the area swept out is limited by the interparticle spacing and the rate of generation of loops is controlled by the rate of climb of loops over second-phase particles, as suggested by Ansel and Weert-men,9 a calculation of the dislocation source density may be made from the experimentally observed creep rates. The result comes out 10" to 10" per cm3 which seems reasonable in view of the assumptions involved. Thus it is concluded that the anomalously low creep rates that were observed were due not to a low dislocation source density but rather to a limitation on the area swept out by each dislocation loop.

DURING the war there was introduced a new higher strength aircraft alloy designated 75S.1,2.3 The properties of this alloy assure extensive applications in both military and commercial aircraft. It is therefore important to understand its limitations as well as advantages. The properties of 75S alloy in the heat-treated tempers, like those of many other aluminum alloys, are affected by the rate of quenching. In general, low quenching rates tend to cause low strengths and to adversely affect the resistance to corrosion. Commercial quenching procedures are usually sufficiently rapid to permit the development of maximum properties. However, in the center of heavy sections, such as large rolled and extruded shapes, the quenching rates may not be rapid enough to develop maximum strength or resistance to corrosion. The investigations of 75S alloy described herein reveal the most critical range of temperature and the effects of quenching sheet and extrusions at different rates through that temperature range, on the tensile properties and resistance to corrosion. PROCEDURE Preparation of Specimens Sheet specimens (3 in. by 9 in.) were prepared from a commercial lot of 75S "as rolled" sheet (0.064 in. thick). The composition° was as follows: Weight Percentage Cu Mn Mg Zn Cr Al with Normal Impurities 1.64 0.16 2.58 5.66 0.27 Remainder The specimens employed for the determination of the time-temperature relations during quenching of sheet were prepared by the following procedure: the hot junction of a 28-ga. iron-constantan thermoelement (asbestos insulated) was brazed to a thin strip of aluminum which was in turn brazed into the end of a 3/16 in. i.d. by ¼ -in. o.d. by 30 in. long aluminum protection tube. Before brazing, the tube was flattened to 0.064 in. thickness over the junction and adjacent lead wires for a distance of 1 ½ in. The flattened end of the tube was fitted into a slot cut from one edge to the center of the 3 in. by 9 in. by 0.064 in. sheet and brazed into place. The brazed joint was dressed to the thickness of the sheet and the entire specimen buffed to approximately the brightness of "as rolled" material. Because of the brazing operations required, these specimens were prepared using 3S alloy. For the investigation of quenching rates in heavy sections, there were used 75S extrusions which had compositions similar to that of the sheet. The specimens consisted of 14 in. lengths of ¾ in., 2 in., 3 in. and 4 in. diam cylindrical rods and a roughly rectangular extruded section which was approximately 4 in. by 7 ½ in. THE texture of cold-drawn copper wire has been described most often as a composite of [Ill] and [loo] directions aligned parallel to the wire axis.&apos; Hibbard2 suggested that sufficient reduction will result in a single [111] texture and reported that after a reduction in area of 96.4 pct, such a texture was nearly obtained. Other work3-4 has shown that recrystallization within the temperature range of 300" to 1000°C does not alter the texture established by cold-drawing. In general, however, the texture of cold-drawn end annealed copper wire is not as well defined as the deformation texture. In the work reported here it was found that the double-fiber, deformation texture persists even after a reduction in area of 97.3 pct, and after recrystallization the texture is practically all [l00]. The wire used in this work was prepared in the following way. A 3/4-in. diam length of annealed OFHC copper was cold-drawn to a diameter of 1/8 in., a reduction in area of 97.3 pct. Each step in the drawing operation brought about a reduction in area that varied from 6 to 10 pct. Short lengths of this wire were etched in a 50-pct solution of nitric acid to a diameter of approximately 0.01 in. The texture of the cold-drawn specimens was determined with the conventional X-ray transmission diffraction technique using filtered copper radiation. The X-ray beam was directed perpendicularly to the wire axis and the diffraction rings were recorded on a flat film. Fig. la is typical of the photo-grams obtained and reveals that the cold-drawing schedule described above introduces a distinct, double-fiber texture with both [Ill] and [l00] directions aligned parallel to the wire axis. Supplementary measurements with a Geiger-Mueller counter of the intensity of reflection from (111) planes showed that the [111] component was much more predominant than the [l00]. Additional specimens of the drawn and etched wire were annealed in a salt bath at temperatures from 300" to 450°C. The texture of the recrystal-lized wire was studied with the same technique applied to the cold-drawn wire. Fig. lb is an X-ray photogram of a specimen annealed for 1 ½ at 300°C and is typical of those obtained from re-crystallized specimens. The photogram shows that recrystallization of this material is accompanied by the almost complete elimination of the [111] component of the deformation texture. A pronounced strengthening of the [100] component was evident from intensity measurements with a Geiger-Mueller counter. In summary, the deformation texture of cold-drawn OFHC copper wire, after a reduction in area of 97.3 pct, may still be described as a composite of [Ill] and [loo] directions aligned parallel to the wire axis. Recrystallization of such wire at temperatures from 300" to 450°C introduces a texture which consists almost entirely of a [loo] alignment. Precipitation processes leading to drastic property changes are a frequent occurrence in titanium alloys containing large amounts of the retained high temperature P phase. In order to establish the kinetics and nature of these precipitation processes, a series of Ti-V alloys was studied. Time-temperature-transformation diqgrams were obtained for 12.5 and 15 pct V-Ti alloys. These diagrams consisted of two intersecting C-shaped curves: one in the high temperature region for the euilibrium transformation P +u+P, and another at lower temperatures depicting the formation of the meta-stable transition phase, o. Presence of the transition phase retarded the precipitation of the equilibrium a phase. Deformation of retained P resulted in the formation of the o phase. Reversion and retrogression phenomena of the transition phase were observed. A negative temperature coefficient of resistance was found in quenched alloys containing from 15 to 20 pct V. CERTAIN titanium-base alloys can be heat treated to produce appreciable changes in properties. For example, remarkably high hardness values may be obtained by aging or isothermal quenching treatments. Most of the information available to date on the hardening of titanium-base alloys has been systematized recently in an article by L. D. Jaffe.&apos; It was pointed out by that author that the hardening was the result of the decomposition of the retained j3 phase to the equilibrium constituents, a and p, and that this decomposition had many of the characteristics of an age-hardening reaction. Recent work by Frost et al.&apos; 3 has contributed much to the fundamental understanding of the hardening mechanism in titanium-base systems. These authors established the presence of a transition phase in the transformation from j3 to a + j3, which they designated o. The transition phase, in their opinion, was at least partially responsible for the hardening and embrittling effects which accompanied low temperature aging. The present investigation of the mechanism and kinetics of the hardening reaction was carried out for the Ti-V system. Ti-V alloys were ideally suited for a study of the decomposition of j3, since age hardening was known to occur readily in this system." Moreover, no intermetallic compounds occur in this system, Fig. 1, thus simplifying the interpretation of the results. Material and Procedure Alloys containing 12.5 and 15 pct V were prepared by Battelle Memorial Institute from iodide titanium furnished by Watertown Arsenal and vanadium of 99.8 pct purity. Ingots of 8 Ib each were prepared by arc melting in an inert atmosphere with a tungsten electrode and water-cooled copper crucible. Each of the ingots was melted once, forged at 1600°, and rolled at 1400°F. Following this, the ingots were remelted, forged, and then rolled to % in. sq bars, which were subsequently grit blasted, pickled, and wire brushed. Another set of alloys containing nominally 17.5 and 20 pct V was produced by the Research Div., New York University. These alloys were arc melted in an inert atmosphere in lots of 20 g each. Heat-Treating Procedure: Whenever feasible, specimens were heat treated in high vacuum resistance furnaces at pressures below 5x10." mm of Hg. IN the study of zinc-zirconium1 and zinc-uranium2 systems, vapor-pressure measurements were made in order to establish the equilibrium phase diagrams for a pressure of 1 atm. In each of these systems, only zinc has an appreciable vapor pressure over the temperature range investigated. The zinc pressure was measured over a sufficiently wide temperature and composition range to permit calculation of the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds ZrZn, ZrZn2, ZrZn3, ZrZn6, ZrZn14 , and U2Zn17. In these calculations the compounds were treated as line compounds. Although the exact composition range was not determined, metallographic and thermal data indicate that the solubility range for these compounds is small. It is to be noted that the compound initially reported to correspond to the formula UZn9, 2 has been shown by the crystal structure work of Makarov and vinogradov3 to correspond to the formula U2Zn17,. The crystal structure is similar to that for the compounds Th2M17, investigated by Florio,4 et al; here M represents iron, cobalt, or nickel. Therefore, thermodynamic calculations are based on the formpla U2Zn17 EXPERIMENTAL The dew-point method employed to measure the vapor pressure of zinc over uranium-zinc alloys has been described previously.2 The same procedure and apparatus were used in measuring the zinc pressure over zinc-zirconium alloys. In the case of alloys in the two-phase region consisting of a zirconium and the compound ZrZn, the Knudsen effusion method was employed to obtain a few values in the temperature range 600" to 560°C. In most cases, tantalum crucibles were used to contain the zirconium alloys. THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OFU2Zn17 A least-squares treatment of the vapor-pressure data obtained for 35 and 65 wt pct U alloys in the temperature range 650° to 940°C gave lOg10PAtm = 7,713/T + 6.33 Here, as in following equations, T represents degrees kelvin and P represents the zinc vapor pressure in atmospheres. The probable errors for the two constants were calculated to be 60.68 and 0.0563, respectively. This relation represents the equilibrium dissociation pressure for the reaction U2Zn17 (s) - 2U(s) + 17Zn(v) The solubility of zinc in solid uranium is negligible and the only additional information required to calculate the free energy of formation of U2Zn17 is the free energy of vaporization of pure zinc. G. Edmunds—Solid solubility is considered to be of either the interstitial or the substitutional type. Is it possible, in a binary alloy as the simplest case, that some of the solute atoms are present in the normal lattice sites (substitutionally or filling lattice vacancies) while simultaneously others are in interstitial positionss One might even ask whether a distribution of the two types may be the normal situation. H. M. Meyer—Metastable states of interstitial atoms occupying vacant lattice sites possibly occur as well as of substitutional atoms squeezed in between regular matrix positions. However (as we know since Hume-Rothery), the solute atoms choose between the two kinds of solutions; consequently, every solute will be unequivocally either substitutional or interstitial in the equilibrium state of the solid solution. M. Balicki—In view of the fact that the authors apparently correlate the analysis of the alloys at the ingot stage with the properties exhibited at the testing stage, I would like to ask whether this is a fully justifiable procedure. In other words, how good are their determinations of solute concentration for correlating them with the mechanical properties. The answer to this question may explain some of the divergencies. Assuming good enough homogenization of the samples and exact determination of mechanical properties the position of the plotted experimental points will depend solely upon the accuracy of composition determination. If this is not accurate, say due to loss or pickup of elements during processing from the ingot to the testing stage, or due to a systematic error in the method employed for obtaining solute concentration data, the points will deviate from their true position and may align themselves along a different curve than the one expected. H. V. Kinsey—We have been studying the creep-rupture properties of titanium-base alloys at 1000°F. In the course of this work, anomalies in behavior of the alloys that would suggest that the material under test was becoming stronger as the test progressed have been observed. If this was so, the most likely explanation that we could think of was that the test bars were absorbing oxygen and nitrogen from the air during the test and were thereby becoming strengthened. In an attempt to determine the strengthening effect of absorbed oxygen and nitrogen the following experiment was conducted. A length of cold-rolled titanium was supplied by the E. I. du Pont Co. Two test bars, having a 1/4 in. diam gauge length, were prepared from this material. One bar was tested in the as-received condition. The second bar was heated in air at 1550°F for 100 hr and subsequently air cooled prior to testing. A testing temperature of 1000°F was employed. The results of these tests are tabulated in table 11. In the author&apos;s opinion, is it reasonable to assume that the bar that was exposed to air at 1550°F for 100 hr was stronger because it absorbed oxygen and nitrogen from the air during this heat treatment? W. L. Finlay (authors&apos; reply)—Direct experimental evidence for or against Mr. Edmunds&apos; interesting suggestion will probably never be available. It seems possible, however, that mixed interstitial-substitutional solid solution might well occur with interstitial elements. INTRODUCTION The degree of success of an association between parties in establishing a new venture ultimately depends on three factors: a. the venture&apos;s underlying economic strength, which is based on the complementarity of the comparative advantages brought by each party to the negotiating table; b. the ability to reach an agreement which satisfies each party&apos;s objectives and constraints; and, c. the capacity to design and implement a funding structure which is consistent with the project economics. A thorough assessment of the venture&apos;s profitability and associated risks under alternative technical and economic scenarios is the basis for a sound "go" or "no go" decision. In-depth evaluation of the risks and rewards to each of the parties involved under alternative legal and financial structure must be the foundation for a long lasting "how to go" decision. The allocation of risks and rewards should be consistent with the objectives and constraints of all parties and the sharing mechanisms, established in the contract, should be flexible to assure the long-term stability of the agreement. Rapidly changing economic conditions during the last decade have had a dramatic impact on the envisaged allocation of risks and rewards between host countries and private investors. The effects of these changes, and the fact that the relative strengths of the parties involved may shift during the life of a project (e.g. before and after major capital investments have been made), have forced the renegotiation of a multitude of contracts. Therefore, the present and future stability of an economic agreement would depend not only on the originally designed provisions, but also on provisions which allow for the automatic adjustment of rewards to project sponsors under a variety of future economic situations. A pre-condition for the allocation and quantification of risks and rewards is the definition of standards of measurement used by each of the parties. This is critical in international negotiations when one of the parties represents the national interests of a country. The understanding and use of different standards for the measurement of rewards for risk taken between a government and private enterprise facilitate the negotiation of a satisfactory agreement. This is possible because certain trade-offs between the negotiating parties may have different relative values. STANDARDS OF MEASUREMENT OF REWARDS FOR RISK TAKEN The negotiating process takes a step forward when the parties are able to focus on their interests, explore different alternative solutions and then base results on a set of objective standards. Unfortunately, the parties frequently put more effort into "staking out" and defending positions, than into understanding their intrinsic interests. Moreover, when one party, such as a governemnt owned corporation, represents a country&apos;s national interests, the negotiation process increases in complexity. Private firms focus on commercial profitability, using discounted cash flow techniques such as NPV, IRR, or ROE. In contrast, the government is also concerned with the project&apos;s impact on the local socio-economic environment. Without entering into a discussion of alternative economic development theories and approaches, there exist several possible measures that could be pragmatically utilized by each party in evaluating the socio-economic impact of a project. The more complete measure is the National Profitability (NP). The NP is a discounted cash flow procedure similar in structure to IRR or NPV but in which the project&apos;s financial cash inflows and outflows and discount rates are adjusted to take into consideration the local conditions. The NP is calculated on an unlevered basis and all taxes and duties are removed from the project

A general model which approximates the effect of cross- flow has been developed to give a practical method for predicting the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. The model is based on a modification of Dietz&apos;s theory and allows for variations in both the permeability and hydrocarbon pore volume. In the particular cases considered, it is assumed that the permeability can be characterized by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume by a normal distribution. A simple graphical method which enables the practicing engineer to predict the behavior of a stratified system is presented The results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the Dykstra-Parsons method. As a result of this study the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) The effect of cross-flow in a stratified system can be appreciable, particularly at very favorable or very unfavorable mobility ratios; (2) Under normal conditions, the effect of variations in the hydrocarbon pore volume can be neglected; and (3) The failure to use all of the available permeability data can lead to large errors in the prediction of the behavior of a stratified reservoir. INTRODUCTION Various methodshavebeenproposedto characterize and to predict the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. Most of the methods assume that the reservoir is composed of discrete homogeneous continuous layers. With this model, the degree of stratification can be measured by several parameters based on core-analysis data. Among these are the Lorenz coefficient1 and the variation of a log-normal permeability distribution? The behavior of stratified systems is usually predicted by the Stiles, Dykstra-Parsons method or some modification of these. In both of these methods the reservoir is divided into discrete homogeneous layers with no cross-flow between layers. In the Stiles method the mobility ratio is assumed to be equal to unity while in the Dykstra-Parsons method it is allowed to take on any value. Other predictive methods have been proposed; method allows for cross-flow between the beds and a method by Schmalz and Rahme6 correlate.s the recovery directly with the Lorenz coefficient. In this new approach, which is essentially a continuous analog of Hiatt&apos;s method, the effects of both mobility ratio and cross-flow between the beds have been included. It is assumed that the permeability can be represented by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume or porosity by a normal distribution. These types of distributions have been observed by several authors, 1,2,4 and most field data seem to confirm their observations; e.g., if these distributions are assumed and there is a 1:l correspondence between porosity and permeability samples, the commonly encountered linear relationship between porosity and the log of permeability is obtained. Since, in many field cases the permeability and poro sity data are truncated or cut-off at predetermined upper and/or lower values, the effect of discarding part of the data was investigated with the proposed method. A better technique for truncating the data is suggested. THEORY In the derivation of the method to be described in this paper the following assumptions are made: 1. Capillary forces are negligible per se; their effects are only manifest in the relative permeability curves. 2. The fluids are immiscible, incompressible and homogeneous. 3. The reservoir is horizontal and uniformly thick; it is initially liquid saturated i.e., connate water and oil. 4. The reservoir is composed of discrete layers, each having its own permeability, porosity and connate water saturation; each layer is homogeneous,

PLACER dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry&apos;s history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. DEEP DREDGING At Hammonton, Calif., Yuba Consolidated Gold Fields has, within the past two years, built its dredge No. 20. The company has operated continuously in that field since 1904, digging successively at maximum depths of 60 ft., 8o ft., 112 ft., and now 124 ft. below water level. The first dredges were equipped with buckets of 6 and 7 ½ -cu- ft. capacity; six dredges operating in the field today have 18-cu. ft. buckets, digging now 65 to 124 ft. below water level. INTRODUCTION Project financing has been defined by various authors in this book. It is founded on reliance upon the project&apos;s own future cash flows and secondarily on the collateral value of the asset base developed. It is chiefly provided by the banking community who, after an assessment of the risks involved (See Chapter 9) analyse the company&apos;s presentation (See Chapter 10) in order to structure a financing package often at a leverage of up to 80% debt. This paper describes the various support and structuring techniques used to delimit and abate the risk components perceived from the banks&apos; experience on project development especially for the period before cash flow is generated (pre completion). ADVANTAGES The advantages of project financing extend beyond the offloading of risks to banks. Among the advantages are the following: 1. Longer loan maturity than conventional, unsecured financing; 2. Loan disbursement and repayment tailored to specific mine; 3. Ability of a joint venture without a "track record" to raise financing; 4. Obtain financing where further direct borrowing (corporate credit) limited by existing indentures; 5. Possibility of arranging finance off-balance sheets; 6. Leverage return on equity; 7. Obtain tax savings with certain project financing structures; and 8. Obtain flexible loan repayment conditions. It can also be said that from the point of view of the company, project financing has certain disadvantages which can be summarised as follows: 1. Perceived higher cost (risk premium) compared with straight corporate credit; 2. More documentation; and 3. Need to negotiate risk-sharing aspects. The main attraction of project financing is the ability to pass certain risks on to the lenders within a flexibly funded transaction. (For a more detailed description of the specific risks see the author&apos;s paper at the beginning of Chapter 9. The same risk system is followed here.) The typical project financing has corporate support prior to completion and will usually carefully control the resultant cashflow after completion to ensure the bank does not unnecessarily assume further risks of an equity nature. WITHIN THE COMPANY&apos;S CONTROL Operating Risk This is broken into three interrelated segments for ease of description. Technical Component: This must be specifically addressed if new technology or unproven adaptations are to be used. The banks will have scrutinized the sampling and bulk testing work, perhaps grilling the geological, mineral processing, metallurgical, and mining engineering staff or consultants directly. A number of supports are available such as: TECHNOLOGY GUARANTEE: Either the company itself or the process developer will guarantee that the technology will work for a period of, say, six months to two years after startup. If not, then financial penalties will apply although these are rarely sufficient to repay the loan. Many process developers are weak financially and may have little substance to back such a guarantee.

BELL (communication to the Secretary*).-I have to thank Mr. Merrill not only for his very kind remarks, but for the weight of his implied opinion that the work accomplished probably has an important practical aspect. I think there is a distinct although unuttered impression among engineers, that it will be time enough for them to begin to take an interest in the law of crushing when it emerges from the cloud of violent and even vituperative controversy that has hovered over it during the last 6 or 7 years. I have a very confident feeling that as the result of the work done by Mr. Gates, by me and by Messrs. Mitchell, Baily and Cockfield, who so loyally helped me to obtain the necessary data, at least the practical law of crushing has emerged; that it is ready and available for use by our fellow engineers, and that it will help them to unravel a number of the many practical problems they are con¬stantly confronted with. In regard to Mr. Gates&apos; discussion, I would indeed like to believe that McGill could claim, as a minor achievement, the credit which Mr. Gates so generously bestows of having established the "law" of crushing. I think that more work would be required to establish this claim in the, strict sense of the word, as there is a fairly large gap between the coarse and fine crushing results. I am not worried about that gap, because the reason for it is quite clear to me; at the same time I-think it will be well to bridge it by a series of tests, and I am bound to admit that the testing machine is the most promising machine right at hand to work with, although whether the minute amounts of power required to crush small quantities of rock can be so accurately integrated as to insure high accuracy in the final result is still a question in my mind. If we had an Amsler-Laffon machine I would certainly try it. Mr. Gates&apos; remarks about choke crushing are extremely interesting. He compels me to wonder, too. It is a new and probably a very important factor to be considered in this connection. I am in perfect accord with Mr. Gates about the desirability of the determination of crushing constants, because when this is accomplished the efficiencies (not relative mechanical, but real efficiencies) of different types of rock-crushing plants in any part of the world will then be comparable. For this reason it would, seem desirable that the American Institute Committee should not only consider ways and means for accom-

FREDERICK LAIST, Anaconda, Mont.-I am going to tell you of some of the results we have been getting in Anaconda during the past two or three months in a large plant which was finished in May. We commenced work in Anaconda a year and a half ago on the construction of a leaching plant which was to have a capacity of 2,000 tons per day. The plant was to treat tailings from the concentrator, containing about 12 1b. of copper to the ton. During the past year we changed our plans and decided to use the flotation process on the tailings from the concentrator, which contained no oxidized copper, and apply the leaching process only to tailings which had accumulated in a large dump below the works. This dump contains about 15,000,000 tons of tailings, and since some of the copper in it is oxidized, we felt that the application of the flotation process would result in the loss of too much of the oxidized copper, particularly as time went on. In starting up we had a number of difficulties to overcome, as is usually the case. They were not of a serious character. The results obtained, so far, have been decidedly encouraging. During July the plant treated a total of 50,000 tons of tailings, or an average of 1,610 tons per clay. The extraction was about 83 per cent., which, on material of the grade treated, meant a. tailing assaying under 0.1 per cent. copper. The acid consumption was about 65 lb. per ton, and the fuel percentage in. roasting was about 4 ¼ . We expect to cut the fuel percentage in the next month or two to about 3 per cent., the high percentage during July being clue to starting up and shutting clown furnaces. We find that iron builds up in the solution to a marked degree. This is not a serious platter with us, because we have cheap sulphuric acid and can reject solution whenever it gets too foul. The extraction of silver has been remarkably good in the large plant. It has averaged better than 75 per cent. It seems that so long as we maintain salt in the solution to a percentage of 10 per cent., the extraction is good. We allowed the salt to fall off in order to find how low a percentage we could use. At about 7 per cent. the silver extraction fell to 65 per cent. This was to be expected, because silver chloride is soluble in strong brine, but not in weak brine.
