The only outstanding development in Montana oil or gas fields during 1935 was the extension of the Cut Bank oil and gas field 7 miles southward. This field is now about 20 miles long and 3 to 8 miles wide, with 218 producing oil wells and 39 producing gas wells. Average daily production of the oil field during December, 1935, was about 6700 bbl.; total production for the year 1935 was approximately 2,020,770 barrels. The Cut Bank field in northern Montana is in a flat to rolling glaciated area used mainly for grazing purposes. Oil and gas occurs in sandstones and shaly sandstones in the Kootenai (Dakota) formation of Lower Cretaceous age at depths ranging from 2700 to 3000 ft. Prominent anticlinal or domal structure is not present, but small plunging anticlines occur locally. Strata dip westward from 75 to 200 ft. per mile. The field lies on the western flank of the Sweetgrass arch, a broad gentle upwarp over 150 miles long. Localization of oil and gas appears to be due either to pinching or lensing out of the sandstone beds, or else silting of the sandstones with clay minerals so that porosity becomes low. Within the field offset wells show marked variation in initial production, which suggests that differences in porosity of sandstone is the controlling factor. The gas-producing portion of the field is entirely updip (east) from the oil-producing portion, and the producing horizons are the same. Initial production of oil wells ranged from about 50 to about 200 bbl. per day, and initial open flow of gas wells ranged from about one million to about 37 million cubic feet per day, with an average of 11 million cubic feet. Initial gas pressures were slightly greater than 700 lb. per sq. in. Oil is brought to the surface by pumping. Both rotary and standard churn-drilling equipment are used. In the remaining 14 oil and gas fields but little new activity took place other than the drilling of offset wells and wells in proven territory. Continuation of "acid treatment" of wells in the Kevin and Pondera oil fields led to reconditioning of many old wells and the drilling of a number of new wells within these fields. Acid treatment of the oil-bearing horizon, which is the dolomitized and silicified Madison limestone of Mississippian age, has proved quite satisfactory, and some "bone dry"

A general discussion on the subject of Crushing and Grinding was held on August 24, 1927, during the meeting of the Institute at Salt, Lake City. G. H. Clevenger, Chairman of the Milling Methods Committee of the Institute, made the following introductory remarks "Several years ago, a number of us felt that the time was ripe for a fundamental investigation of crushing and grinding. At the outset, it appeared that the first thing we needed was a yardstick whereby grinding efficiency could be measured. "The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been most generous in cooperating with the Milling Methods Committee in getting this work well undrr way. John Gross, who served the committee for a year as secretary, was placed in charge of the investigation and has been ably assisted by S. R. Zimmerley. "Messrs. Gross, Salt Lake City, Utah.—-This has not been a simple problem, and when I tell you that me can give you a verbal report of what we have done during three years in five or ten minutes you will realize that we have necessarily done a great deal of work that dors riot appear in the final results. We have been in a virtually new field. Therefore, we have had to feel our way at each step so as to be fairly sure we were correet. The first thing that was realized in this problem ass that unless we had some method of measuring what happened when we crushed an ore, we might as well quit and not go further. we realized that if we tried to measure the results of crushing or grinding by the ordiuary sizing test we would not get anywhere. We could sieve down to say 200 mesh fairly accurately; we could even go one sieve size further with a little less accuracy, and then we were absolutely lost, unless we went into microscopic measurement. Even this latter method would not have been satisfactory. The question was: what were we going to measure? If we were going to measure size, we might measure one particular dimension of a particle and be off 200 per cent. or more. If we tried to measure surfaee, we would have something tangible; the surface of a particle, no matter how irregular, is something definite, far more definite than any linear dimension would be. Moreover, if we could measure surface, we would immediately have a method of checking the Rittinger law as to whether it was or was not correct. So the first thing that we sought. was a method whereby we could measure surface on crushed particles or, we will sag., on particles; it would not make any difference whether crushed or not. This paper deals with equimolar solutions of xanthate and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide adsorption on copper, nickel and sphalerite powders. After an exposition of the experimental methods used and the results obtained, a thorough discussion leads to the conclusion that some molecular association between xanthates and CnTAB's does take place in the bulk of the solution as well as at the air/liquid interface. A spectrophotometric study of xanthate solutions alone and their mixtures with equimolar amounts of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CnTAB) has established the additivity of ultraviolet spectra (190 to 400 mµ) for potassium ethyl xanthate (KEtX) and C12TAB. No obvious effect of C12TAB addition on the decomposition rate of KEtX was observed, the half life of which was established as 29±3 days at 22°C and pH ~ 6. In mixed solutions of longer xanthate homologues (e.g. hexyl and nonyl) and equimolar CnTAB, colloidal precipitates are gradually formed which contain primarily the corresponding xanthate molecules. The kinetics of collector abstraction by copper, nickel and sphalerite powders were studied in 10-5 to 10"3 M solutions of KEtX alone and in equimolar mixtures of KEtX and CI2TAB. Presence of C12TAB caused a two to three fold increase in the amounts of xanthate (equivalent to many monolayers) abstracted by copper and nickel powders (and in their rates of abstraction) but had no effect on the abstraction of xanthate by unactivated sphalerite (equivalent to less than a monolayer). The adsorption of C12TAB itself from the mixed solutions was very low, at most one monolayer only, and was not influenced by the nature of the solid powder used. A change in the rates of abstraction, observed with copper powder, was interpreted as a completion of a multilayer coating (completely enveloping the grains of powder) following which the rate of reaction between solution and substrate becomes controlled by diffusion through this coating. Work of Buckenham and Schulmanl on molecular associations between different collectors has shown unusual synergistic effects in flotation of individual minerals using mixtures of xanthates and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromides. The objectives of the present work were: 1) to determine whether these molecular associations between the two types of collectors (indicated by strong surface tension lowering in Buckenham and Schulman's work) take place at the air/liquid interface only or in the bulk of solution as well 2) to establish whether different solids adsorb any species from the mixture of these amphipatic molecules preferentially or as molecular complexes 3) to establish whether there are any differences in the kinetics of adsorption. Metallic copper and sphalerite powder were chosen as adsorbents since they represent two extremes since copper readily adsorbs multilayers of xanthate (and is easily floated with ethyl xanthate) while unactivated sphalerite does not appreciably adsorb xanthate but is known to be readily floated by the amine type collectors. The problem of scrap is probably of greater importance in the pro duction of gold, silver and other precious metal alloys than is the case for base metals and alloys. Remelting of gold and silver scrap in the shop is always a costly process because it involves losses by oxidation of thc base metals in the alloy with a consequent increase in the percentage of precious metal. This is most marked in the case of alloys containing the low-boiling and easily oxidized metals zinc and cadmium. Since it is not generally feasible to assay every shop remelt it follows that the possibilities of lost values arc large. So-called rolled gold and silver plate is made by soldering or welding the precious metal alloys onto base metal. Such plate when defective must be sent to the refinery to recover the gold and silver values, thereby involving additional expense in the form of refining charges. It is obvious therefore that gold and silver alloy scrap is an important item in manufacturing cost and must be reduced to a minimum. The amount of scrap resulting from poor metal will depend on a number of factors in the manufacturing operations, not least among which is the melting and casting practice. The notes which follow are a summary of experiments performed at various times to determine what variables in melting and casting are influential in the production of sound alloys. Metals Used in Alloying Pure gold, that is, gold of 24-kt. value is very much too soft for jewelry purposes and it is therefore always alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and resistance to wear. For the same reason pure silver is seldom used alone but is alloyed with copper, the standard alloy being sterling silver which contains 92.5 per cent. silver and 7.5 per cent. copper. The metals commonly used for alloying gold are silver, coppcr, nickel and zinc. In addition to hardening the gold and producing alloys of different karat values the use of these metals makes possible the production of gold alloys of various colors such as yellow, red, green and white. Robert E. Hagen (Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp.)—Mr. Stowasser and his associates are to be congratulated on their achievements in developing the design of a pilot agglomerating plant, based on information obtained from experiments made in a laboratory sinter pot, and subsequently constructing and successfully operating this plant. In his Transactions article, May 1955 (vol. 201) Mr. Stowasser stated that the output of his heat treating strand was about 2 Lt per sq ft of grate area per day and that the fuel consumption was 0.7 to 0.8 million Btu per Lt of product. If it is assumed that the burning zone extends from the back of the ignition furnace to the beginning of the recuperation windbox, only about 1/3 of the grate area over the windboxes is utilized for burning pellets, and the actual rate at which partially dried pellets are burned is about 6 Lt per sq ft of grate area per day. It may be interesting to compare the above operating data with that obtained at the Extaca plant, where taconite concentrate is treated on a conventional sin- tering machine using limestone or hydrated lime additives with no recuperation of heat. The entire windbox area is used for burning, and a production rate of 2.5 Lt per sq ft of windbox area per day has been attained at a fuel consumption of 1.8 to 2.0 million Btu per Lt of product, the latter being considerably in excess of that reported by Mr. Stowasser, partly because a circulating load of returns amounting to 28 to 30 pct of the machine feed is used and because no attempt is made to recuperate heat from the waste gases. With the high capital and labor costs prevailing today, it seems that future development of the downdraft grate pelletizing process should be directed toward taking advantage of the high burning rate of predried pellets and increasing capacity, perhaps at the expense of fuel economy, by decreasing the proportion of grate area utilized by ancillary functions. For example, eliminating the cooling zone and using this area for burning would increase the proportion of grate area available for burning from 33 to 50 pct of the total windbox area, and a proportionate increase in capacity would result.

The objects of this paper are: 1. To give cost data on drilling obtained at the North Star mine in California; 2. To describe the methods of testing drills employed there, giving the results of shop tests, and the correlated data obtained underground; 3. To demonstrate that these tests form a satisfactory basis upon which to judge rock drills. The rock at this mine is either close-grained diabase in the upper levels, or tough grano-diorite in the lower levels. The vein, which has an average dip of 23", consists of about 5 ft. of " formation" lying between walls of unaltered country rock. Of the 5 ft., solid quartz and stringers make up 18 in. of pay ore. The formation, which consists of but slightly altered country rock, is almost as hard as the unaltered walls. From 4 to 44 ft. is sent to the mill. One-third of the holes are drilled in the quartz; two-thirds in the formation. The holes are about 4 1/2 ft. deep and break on the average of 1.15 tons per hole. The average number of holes per stope drill shift is at present 5.65. The number of drill shifts throughout the mine in 1913 was 18,679, and the cost of labor for drilling, power, supplies, upkeep of machines and air lines, tool sharpening, and distribution, amounted to 33 per cent. of total mining expense. To do this work there are in commission 43 No. 12A, three No. 17V and eight No. 16V Waugh stopers, three Jackhamers, two Waugh pluggers, and 17 No. 8 and two NO. 7 water Leyners. For the past three years a record has been kept of the repairs on each machine and number of shifts operated by it. The figures given in Tables I and II for the cost of repairs per drill shift have been taken from this record. The underground air pressure is about 90 lb. The air consumption per drill shift was measured by aerometers. The leakage of pipe lines between compressor and meter is not included. From the number of pieces of steel sharpened for each type of drill during the year the average used per drill shift has been ascertained. For other supplies the figures given represent a year's average.

The kinetics of silicate adsorption from aqueous colloidal (SO2 . nH2O) silicate sols on thoria (ThO 2) surfaces were determined at 100, 150 and 200°C in an autoclave system. The amount of chemisorbed silica on the thoria surface was determined by means of infrared spectroscopy. First order kinetics were observed in all cases with the anomalous result that the first order rate constant was found to vary with the initial amount of silica added to the system. These results have been correlated quantitatively by means of a strain model of adsorption involving two types of surface silicate bonding, both of which may be readily observed in the infrared spectrum. Initial adsorption occurs rapidly to produce one type of surface silicate followed by a slow transition to a second type of surface bonding, the latter transition representing the slow step in the adsorption process. Initial interest in silicate adsorption on thoria arose from the dispersive effect silica has on finely divided thoria in aqueous suspensions. Spaepen et al studied the equilibrium adsorption of silica on thoria and noted increased adsorption up to approximately 215°C with a notable decrease in adsorption at temperatures above 215°C. Similar results were observed by Cho and Wadsworth2 who identified two types of surface silica by infrared spectroscopy. At temperatures of 100°C and above, rapid initial adsorption occurred producing a surface species with maximum infrared absorbance at 9.4 After extended periods of time, the 9.4 species converted to a more strongly bonded surface silicate with maximum infrared absorbance at 10.3. The latter was very strongly bonded and difficult to remove by desorption in hot distilled water, while the 9.4 species could be removed more readily by similar treatment. The 9.4 and 10.3-p species were distinguishable from free unadsorbed silica which had maximum infrared absorbance at 9.1 The kinetics of the formation of the strongly chemisorbed silica (10.3) on thoria as determined by infrared examination are presented in this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As a source of silicate, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) or Ludox HS (30.25% SO2), DU Pont colloidal silica in aqueous suspensions, was added directly to a thoria slurry made up of one liter of distilled water and one gram of thoria. The thoria used was designated D-16-650 and was received from the Chemical Technology Div. of Union Carbide Nuclear Co. It was prepared by firing thorium oxalate at 650°C. The D-16 thoria had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 sq m per g as determined by nitrogen adsorption.* This thoria 'Determined by Unlon Carbide Nuclear Co., ORNL. had a total adsorption capacity for silicate of approximately 19.4 mg of silica per gram of thoria.1 This amounts to approximately one SiO2 molecule for every surface thoria site. Developments in California during 1942 were marked by many difficulties in operation, of which the lack of labor and material were the main factors in slowing down work. During the many years of curtailment, which has been effective since 1928, a number of estimates of the state's capacity to produce have been built up, but during the year 44 fields were 'eliminated from curtailment and valuable data were obtained as to the normal capacity of these fields to produce. Because of new discoveries and the normal decline of old fields, which is more than 15 per cent per year, it is estimated that the sustained capacity of the state for a 5-year period is not more than 500,000 bbl. per day. Decline in the rate of production was greatest in the fields in the Los Angeles Basin district. These fields have been produced nearly at capacity for many years and had no reserve of shut-in production. The San Joaquin Valley and Coastal districts have responded well to the increased allotments assigned to them by the Petroleum Administrator for War. All heavy oil fields in the state are on full production, except in the Coastal district, where transportation is the limiting factor. Although approximately 2500 more wells are on production in the state than there were in 1941, the supply of heavy crude has not yet reached the demand. A summary of statistics for 1941 and 1942 is given in the following table. Production in California for 1942 was 680,000 bbl. a day as against 631,000 bbl. a day for 1941, an increase of 7.8 per cent. The present maximum efficient rate has been estimated at 808,000 bbl. per day. This indicates that in the 15 restricted fields of the state there is only an additional 83,000 bbl. per day of light oil available. Drilling Activity Drilling activity during the year was equivalent to but 70 per cent of normal. Although shortages of equipment and labor were in part responsible for the reduced drilling activity, the main reasons were the lack of proved locations due to a cycle of very few new discoveries and the restrictions of Conservation Order M-68. Rumania produced during 1936 some 62,500,000 bbl. of oil. Of this production, 99 per cent comes from an area running east and west along the southern foothills of the Carpathian Mountains just north of Bucharest. This almost rectangular area measures 20 by 40 miles and is located in the districts of Dambovita and Prahova between the cities of Targovigte to the west and Mizil to the east. The remainder of the production is about evenly divided between the oil fields north and east of Mizil in the Buzh district and those to the north on the eastern flanks of the Carpathian Mountains in the district of Baciiu. The Transylvanian Basin to the north and west of the Carpathian Mountains has produced to date only dry gas from its numerous salt domes. Bucsani Field The Bucgani oil field produced 15,600,000 bbl., or 25 per cent of the total production of Rumania in 1936. Bucgani is a deep-seated salt dome 7 miles south of the old Moreni oil field. A slight surface doming, not dissimilar to the topography observed on some of the oil fields of the Californian basin, called attention to the area. It is the southernmost oil field and, together with the deep-seated and prolific Boldesti field, points to the great oil possibilities of the deep-seated domes along the northern edge of the Rumanian plains south of the Carpathian foothills. The Government is the principal owner of the oil and gas subsurface rights in the areas south of the foothills. The acquisition of leases by the operating oil companies may be made either by application for an exploration permit, the company being assigned part of the acreage in case of successful wildcatting, or, if the area has already been declared as proven territory, through competitive bidding. A block of 164 acres was auctioned recently for $200,000, or $1200 per acre. The largest producer in the Bucgani oil field is the Steaua Romana, which produced 39.5 per cent of the total for the field. The Steaua Romana is a post-war company and 50 per cent of its shares are owned by the British Steaua and the Steaua Franpaise and the other 50 per cent by a group of Rumanian banks and by the Government. INTRODUCTION DURING the years 1942-1944, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailed studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country's needs in normal times, for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. The data analyzed below were collected for the Geological Survey by D. M. Larrabee, A. H. McNair, J. J. Page, V. E. Shainin, G. W. Stewart, and the co-authors of this paper. The cooperation of officials of Colonial Mica Corporation and of mine operators and owners in furnishing information is gratefully acknowledged. D. M. Larrabee, A. H. McNair, and V. E. ANALYSIS OF WARTIME OPERATIONS In considering the data presented in this report, it must be remembered that the scale of mica operations is very small compared with that of many other mining industries. The typical New England mica mine of 1943 and 1944 was worked by a crew of five or six men. Equipment was varied but on the whole extremely simple. The first stage of operation at a deposit was normally opencut mining. Drilling was done mostly with jackhammers powered by portable compressors driven by gasoline engines. Muck was shoveled by hand into buckets with a capacity of 1/3 to 2/3 ton and commonly hoisted by derrick to a dump adjacent to the cut. As operations were carried to greater depth, and the transition to underground mining was made, these methods were modified to a degree depending largely on the attitude of the deposit mined. H. F. Ryan and J. Suiter (CSIRO)—In this paper the authors have presented "a physical model which has as its central hypothesis the solution strengthening of regions along grain boundaries in the order of tens of angstroms thick", and their calculations have used 40Å as the zhalf-width of this boundary region. Selection of this value by the authors suggests that they were unaware of a number of recent field-ion microscope observations of grain boundary structures (e.g., Refs. 29 and 30). The accompanying figure, Fig. 9, shows a portion of an ion micrograph of a tungsten specimen containing a grain boundary, and the regular arrangement of atoms in various crystal planes in each grain can be seen, except in the boundary zone which is not more than two atom diameters in width. Since it is expected that solute atoms will segregate only to the region where the lattice is disturbed, it would seem that a value of 4Å for the half-width of the boundary region would be more appropriate than the value of 40Å assumed by the authors. If the former value is used in Eq. [8] of their paper to obtain curves showing solute concentration in the grain boundary as a function of temperature, the resulting curves differ significantly from those obtained by the authors. Although there are only relatively slight changes in the regions corresponding to higher temperatures (i.e., grain boundary concentrations of approximately 1 at. pet), at lower temperatures the curves are no longer realistic. For example, the curve corresponding to u = 7000 cal per mole gives a solute grain boundary concentration in excess of 100 pet at a temperature of approximately 360°K, and "flattens out" at a grain boundary concentration of about 300 pet! Similar results are obtained with each of the other curves. Ion microscopy of dilute solid-solution alloys has shown that solute atoms give rise to image points which in most cases are of higher intensity than those of the solvent atoms.31 If the same behavior occurs when the solute atoms are present in much lower concentrations then ion microscopy should provide a sensitive tool for studying the segregation of impurities to the grain boundary regions. Although many grain boundaries in tungsten have been examined after different thermal and mechanical treatments, there has not been, as yet, any systematic study of such segregation. In general the micrographs show no clear indications of marked grain boundary segregation, but occasionally areas are found where the grain boundary contains an appreciable number of image points of high intensity in a very narrow zone, see Fig. 9. If it is assumed that these correspond to impurity atoms then it is possible to estimate the impurity concentration both in the grain boundary and within the body of the grains. During the years 1942-1934, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailcd studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country's needs in normal times? for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. The data analyzed below were collected for the Geological Survey by D. M. Larra-bee, A. H. McNair, J. J. Page, V. E. Shai-nin, G. W. Stewart, and the co-authors of this paper. This paper describes a technique which permits visual observation of oil displacement processes througlrout the interior of a porous structure as thick as 2 in. A model having glass walls is filled with finely powdered glass. Such a model becomes completely transparent if the powdered glass pack is saturated with an oil having the same refractive index as the glass. When water or gar, with a refractive index different from that of the oil (glass) is injected, the model becomes opaque in the space occupied by the water (gar). visual observation and photography of these displacement processes are thus rendered possible. The following processes have been studied: (I) displacement of oil by water (linear drive) in a homo-geneous formation and in a stratified formation, (2) water flooding (five-spot well pattern), (3) solution gas-drive process, and (4) oil-bank formation. INTRODUCTION Most of the scaled model experiments heretofore carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amsterdam, have been done in steel containers, in which oil-saturated sand packs represented the oil-bearing formation. In such experiments, for instance those on the displacement of oil by water, the cumulative oil production was measured as a function of the cumulative water injection. In order to interpret the measured production data, a need has for some time been felt for a means of observing visually what happens in the course of such experiments. Some information of this kind was obtained earlier by observing the water-oil distribution in various cross sections of the sand after the conclusion of the experiment.' However, the technique used did not guarantee that the fluid distribution remained undisturbed. Moreover, the procedure was somewhat elaborate and the information obtained limited. Therefore a new technique has been developed, which is described below. DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE AND APPARATUS Glass models simulating part of an oil reservoir are filled with ground Pyrex glass of a specific grain size, representing the porous structure of the prototype. Before an experiment is started, the porous formation has to be saturated completely with an oil having exactly the same refractive index as the Pyrex glass powder. All light-scattering surfaces of the glass grains become invisible and the formation is then transparent. If the oil is displaced by another fluid (e.g. by water in a water-drive experiment, or by gas liberated from the oil in a solution gas-drive experiment) the formation becomes opaque in the region where the oil is expelled from the rock.* The back of the apparatus is painted black and illumination is from the front; therefore, in the photographs of the experiments, the oil-bearing formation appears black, whereas the water- or gas-invaded areas are white.

Extensive studies have been carried out on electric furnace and blast furnace slags obtained in the winning of iron from its ores. These slags normally consist of elements of the gangue minerals present in the ores, as well as the added flux materials. In consequence, melts of CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 can be considered as representing typical slag compositions. When a slag of this composition cools, it usually crystallizes according to predictions possible from an equilibrium diagram of these constituents, providing the melt is not undercooled to form glass. The melt is either viscous or fluid, depending upon the ratio of binary cations to silica, and crystallizes easily or forms a glass for the same reasons. If the melt is not overheated so that carbides of the metal components of the slag are formed and if the composition of the slag is so adjusted that it has a high fluidity, liquid equilibrium is attained and the slag can be held in a liquid state for extended periods of time. Upon tapping, the slag crystallizes into minerals, the type and proportion of which are determined by the melt composition. Since equilibrium is attained, the holding period is not critical. In melts containing a large increment of titanium, however, the normal slag procedures are not applicable. Titanium, as one of the atomic transition elements, is, at elevated temperatures, capable of being reduced to form metalloid compounds much more readily than the refractory oxides present in normal slags. In consequence, an oxide melt containing titanium never reaches equilibrium in a reducing environment, but continues to shift its composition until cooled. If melts of this nature are cooled and samples submitted to metal-lographic and X ray analysis the course of reaction and crystallization in this type of slag can be determined. Preparation of Slag The slags investigated fell into the system CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3-SiO2 and were produced from ilmenite ores reduced by carbon in an electric furnace. Since the equilibrium series1 and the laboratory smelting of ilmenite2 are described in two of the accompanying papers, detailed description of the smelting procedure is not required here. However, certain essentials must be mentioned. Two types of melts were used to produce slags studied in this investigation. The first series of smelts made to determine proper flux addition were produced in a 4 lb Ajax induction furnace. The charge, consisting of ore with the proper flux addition, was heated in a graphite crucible until fluid, held fluid for a sufficient time period to obtain 1-5 pct FeO content, and poured. Because of the small size of the charge only the final sample of these melts could be examined. In the melts made in the 50 lb arc furnace, however, grab samples taken at 10 min. intervals between time of initial melting and final pouring were available for examination. These samples allowed a much clearer picture of the course of reaction and crystallization. amounts of ferrous oxide and reduced titanium compounds is opaque to transmitted light. Therefore, all petro-graphic studies had to be made on polished slag sections. A representative sample of slag was cut or broken, mounted in a thermosetting plastic, ground flat using 400 grit silicon carbide, the coarse scratches removed with 600 grit silicon carbide and polished on billiard cloth using levigated alumina. Rouge was avoided because of the entrainment of the red particles in pores in the slag, causing a possible confusion with some of the mineral phases. In order to prevent sample projection above the plastic surface red bakelite was used to hold the sample, and backed up with clear lucite. In this manner sample labels could be permanently retained in the mounting. The polished samples were examined on a Bausch and Lomb metallograph at magnifications of 250 X, 500 X, 1000 X and 1800 X. The instrument was equipped for examination of specimens under bright field illumination and with crossed nicols. A magenta tint plate to aid in color tone differentiation was also used. Petrology of Slags In order to determine the composition and mineral relatinos of a previously unreported system petrologically, it is essential that the starting composition, reaction temperature and final composition be known. The chemical composition of the ilmenite ore used in these smelts is given in Table 1, and the complete analysis of a typical high titanium, low iron slag is given in Table 2. In the winning of TiO2 from ilmenite by a smelting process it is necessary to produce a slag which will melt at an economically feasible temperature, remain molten as the iron is removed by reduction, be fluid enough to be readily removed from the furnace, contain a high percentage of TiO2 and a low percentage of reduced titanium com-

IN 1948, the writer and his associates determined the surface tension of solid copper by balancing the force of surface tension in a very fine wire against an external load.' At that time we, in common with other early workers, assumed that grain boundary energy in a pure metal is very small in comparison to the energy of an external surface. Accordingly, we neglected the internal surface energy of the coarse-grained specimens. Since that time, experimental evidence has accumulated showing that grain boundary energy, far from being small, is generally about one-third of the energy of an external surface.2-4 This is sufficient to introduce a significant error into our determination. The differential equation governing equilibrium is: wdl - yds, + y*ds2 [I] rather than wdl = yds as originally written. w is the balancing force in dynes, 1 the length of the specimen, sl the external and s2, the internal surface area, y the copper/ copper vapor surface tension, and y* the grain boundary tension. Fortunately, we had made for another purpose a careful study of the size and shape of the grains, and found that the boundaries, with rare exceptions, traversed the specimens and were perpendicular to the wire axis. For this case, eq 1 leads to w = rry -(n) r2y* [2] where r is the wire radius and (n is the number of grains per unit length. A count of some twenty 5-mil wires indicated that - n became 80 & 10 after a short anneal near the melting point, and remained nearly constant for as long as 96 hr at temperature. An assumption of y* = 1/3y leads to a defining eauation for r: [31 The term in the brackets may be considered a correction factor applied to eq 11 of ref. 1. Upon applying this factor, the surface tension of solid copper at its melting point is found to be 1650 & 100 dynes per cm, rather than 1370 as previously reported.' The new temperature coefficient is —0.55 dynes per cm per "C. Grain boundary energy is more significant than surface energy to the physical metallurgist. It is evident from eq 2 that a series of experiments with wires of different grain size can lead to an evaluation of y*. The details of such an experiment are being worked out now. References 1 H. AT elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing. When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible' and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver. Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscale forma¬tion) in alloys of silver with 2, 7.5, and 30 per cent of copper. The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver.4 Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation. Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detail5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation. The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically; some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found. Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the I-b and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking. A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation; i.e., they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them. In a study of 4o alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found. The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently. Operations at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hy-droseparation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the mallufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement. † About 3I30 tons of limestone, 620 tons of clay and I00 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. up to the present time, the ccrporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate-heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modihed-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Red- ding, Calif., the total demand being 5,800,000 bbl. of cement.
