The curriculum presented here is an outgrowth of discussions by the Committee on Geophysics Courses of the A.I.M.E. in previous years. It had to be a compromise between the desires voiced by employers of geophysicists, professional geophysicists and the possibilities at an average college. There one has to face the questions of the available teaching staff, the inertia of administrators and teachers set in their ways, and the red tape involved in modernizing antiquated curricula. It is, of course, not ideal to have colleges and universities lag Io years behind the times. Rather, instead of being prodded by industry, they should be ahead of industrial needs. There should also be a certain amount of leeway for the student in any college curriculum. All these points had to be considered in drawing up a curriculum, which, instead of being narrowly termed "geology" or "geophysics" was rather called "earth science." It gives the student a chance to specialize in one of the various branches represented by teachers on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State College, giving as options Geology (with subdivisions of Mineralogy and Paleontology), Geophysics, Geography, and Meteorology. Table iA represents the option of geophysics in the curriculum that envisages that a student may want to make his career in any of the fields encompassed by the American Geophysical Union or in geoexploration. This is, of course, only the start of an education that in most cases will have to be followed by graduate work for complete professional training. The outlined curriculum is definitely of an engineering type and is identical for all of the four options mentioned for the first two years. Specialization will start in the junior year but even thereafter the branches are kept as closely allied as feasible in order to permit a student to change from one tO the other (e.g., because of a different aspect in the mployment situation) with a minimum of additional work. Table IB shows the geophysics option according to subject matter, indicating the considerable amount of work in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and chemistry with a liberal number of geology courses, and some engineering. The courses in the field of geophysics are limited—just two lecture courses as a general introduction and one field course, to permit the student a visualization of the correlation between mathematically analyzed physical data and the geological realities. Thesis work is considered essential to teach the student, while he is still in college, some things S. F. Kelly has mentioned as desirable: (I) following of instructions for somewhat independent work; (2) organizing of material, and (3) producing a readable report. This, together with the personal contact with the advising faculty member, will help in forming a student's personality. The seminar course attempts to get the student into the habit of reading current literature, so that he can keep abreast of the times.

The purpose of pulverizing coal before burning it is to make available every heat unit it contains. Machinery has been developed which will pulverize coal in one operation, delivering it to bins in front of the furnaces at an expenditure of about 17 hp.-hr. per ton, in a medium-sized plant. The cost of the operation depends upon the amount of moisture that must be expelled before pulverizing, the cost of labor, and the cost of coal delivered at the plant. At a small plant, requiring a pulverizer with a capacity of only 1/2 ton per hour, the cost per ton pulverized will naturally be greater than at a plant requiring the largest pulverizer, with a capacity of 7 tons per hour. :The first step is to reduce large lumps to a size suitable for drying uniformly, before passing to the pulverizing mills; this is done in rolls, at a single pass. The second step is the elimination of moisture, in order to facilitate pulverizing to great fineness, while also increasing the heating effect and the temperature attainable when the coal is burned. There are other mechanical advantages in the handling of dried coal. Driers are now manufactured which are able to eliminate moisture without distilling any of the volatile combustible matter in the coal; they are fired by hand or with pulverized fuel. The heat first surrounds the shell of the drier, being confined within a chamber where complete combustion takes place; the heated gases are then led through a duct to the discharge end of the drier and enter the inside of the shell at a temperature not exceeding 300" F. This temperature is maintained by the operator and is indicated by a pyrometer. Volatile combustible matter is not likely to be distilled until the temperature rises above 400" F. On discharging from the drier, the coal is usually passed over a magnetic separator in order to prevent pieces of iron from going to the pulverizer. Two types are used: a magnetic pulley which automatically discharges its collection of iron, and a lifting type, from which the iron is removed by hand when convenient. In the operation of pulverizing, the coal should preferably be reduced until 95 per cent. will pass through a 100-mesh and 70 per cent. through a 300-mesh sieve. Such a product is obviously an almost impalpable powder.

BOTH the foundryman and the theoretical metallurgist are now generally agreed that the anomalous "rising" or "bleeding" of certain ferrous castings of killed metal is primarily attributable to hydrogen. How and why the phenomenon occurs, however, have not been made clear. The following discussion is intended to harmonize foundry experience with metallurgical theory so that the foundryman may possibly improve his ability to prognosticate whether a certain casting may bleed or not. BLEEDING, RISING, AND PIPING The "rising" to be discussed here is not to be confused with the action in rimming ingots as a result of the carbon-oxygen reaction, although a conclusion will be drawn that may apply to the art of controlling the rimming action. Only killed metal is considered, which includes both steels and irons. In Fig. I, three killed, chill-cast ingots are shown: a porous ingot whose evolution of gas during late stages of solidification has ejected metal through the top; an ingot in which moderate gas evolution during solidification has lifted the mushy central metal, i.e., it has "risen"; and, third, a sound ingot with good piping characteristics. The first type is referred to as "bleeding," and generally infers that a solid skin had first formed through which the liquid metal later erupted. There is no fundamental distinction between bleeding and rising in reference to killed metal.* POROSITY Hydrogen appears as a cause of bleeding because the gas evolution simultaneously leaves a porosity of a type traceable to hydrogen. Twenty years ago, Melmoth1 noted that killed steel that rose unexpectedly in the mold, if returned while liquid to the furnace and heated further under a reducing lime slag, would again rise in the mold; but that if the ingot were allowed to solidify and was then remelted no rising occurred. A critical quantity of the responsible gas is therefore removed by the rising action. Melmoth associated rising with high silicon (0.7 to 0.9 per cent) and concluded that silicon increased gas absorption. Because silicon is a strong deoxidizer, oxygen must, therefore, be eliminated from consideration of the three common gases in steel-oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Butterworth2 later decided that pinhole porosity was caused by gases dissolved in the metal and that hydrogen was obtained from steam in the mold. TO the author's knowledge, only one satisfactory high-resolution technique for etch-pitting dislocations in Cu-Zn alloys has been published.' In that account, pits in 70/30 brass single crystals were produced by etching electrolytic ally in a 30 pct orthophosphoric acid bath. Thereafter, observations were made from surface replicas by electron microscopy. The method of pitting and observation permitted the high resolution necessary for the distinction of individual dislocations in arrays of pile-ups. However, no comment was offered concerning the possibility of obtaining pits which are amenable to optical resolution. Moreover, for adequate results, the electrolytic pitting process is invariably preceded by a polishing stage which could obscure the surface features of interest. Consequently, it would be desirable to be able to delineate, by solely chemical means, dislocations which could be detected by both optical and electron metallo-graphic techniques. This was achieved by the simple expedient of modifying two etchants reported by young2 to reveal dislocations on the (100) planes of pure copper. Single crystals of 70/30 a brass, described previously,3 were sectioned to provide a surface parallel to a set of {100) planes, mechanically polished, and subsequently electropolished at 2.4 v in a solution comprised of 2 parts H3PO4, 4 parts ethanol, and 3 parts water. The inclusion of ethanol tended to inhibit nonuniform surface attack. Etch-pitting was effected by a 2 to 3 sec immersion in a 70 pct aqueous solution of HNO3. The samples were then washed in a fast-flowing stream of water, and rinsed further in distilled water, and ethanol, before drying. It is important to note that this reagent should be either used immediately after mixing, or, if allowed to cool, reheated to about 35°C prior to use. No pitting was obtained at room temperature. Typical results are shown in Fig. 1 where (a) is an optical view of the pitted surface and (b) is an electron micrograph of a silicon monoxide replica shadowed with tungsten oxide. The former is characteristic of a somewhat longer etching time (-6 to 8 sec) which varied with bath temperature. Similar pits accrued from a 1/10 aqueous dilution of another of Young's solutions2—2 M FeC1,6H20 and 7.8 M HBr.

The methods about to be described have been tested in practice, and are believed to be specially adapted to such extended topographical surveys as mining engineers in particular are sometimes called upon to execute. The assistance of Mr. H. 0. Flipper in the preparation of this paper, and his practical authorship of the second part, is hereby acknowledged. I. Photographic SuRveying. The writer was recently employed; together with Mr. H. O. Flipper, to survey the properties of the Plata-Reina de Sonora Mining and Milling Company, situated in the mining district of Las Planchas, District of Magdalena, State of Sonora, Mexico. These properties, now owned by an American corporation, of which M. W. Evans, of New Orleans, is president, and Richard A. Pomeroy is resident superintendent, are famous in the history of Mexican mining, as the place where planchus, or bolas de plata were foulld about the beginning of the last century. Ward, the English CILargh d7Affaires in Mexico from 1826 to 1828, writing at that epoch, says: "The idea [that the ores in the north of Mexico were richer than those in the south] probably originated in the discovery of the famous bolas de plata [balls of silver] of Arizona [Planchas de Plata de Arizona, a stock-ranch in northern Mexico], in the beginning of the last century, which was, and probably still is, believed in Europe to be one of those fables with which mining countries always abonnd. But the attention of the present government of Mexico having been drawn to the subject, a search was made in the viceregal archives, by order of the president, for the correspondence which was known to have taken place respecting it in the year 1736. This correspondence I have seen, and I have in my possession a certified copy of a decree of Philip the Fifth, dated Aranjuez, 28th May, 1741, the ohject of which was to terminate a prosecution, instituted by the Royal Fiscal, against the discoverers of Arizona, for having defrauded the treasnry of the duties payable upon the masses of pore silver found there. The decree states the weight of the balls, sheets and other pieces of silver discovered (bolas, planchas, y otras piezas de plata), to have amounted to 165 arroba, 8 pounds, in all, 4133 pounds; and mentions particularly one mass of pure silver, which weighed 108 arrobas (2700

IT is a generally recognized fact that a steel quenched from the austenitic range and tempered to yield a structure composed of tempered martensite becomes increasingly more ductile with increasing tempering temperature. However, the conventional tensile test fails to yield any value that is sensitive to differences in behavior on tempering among the various low-alloy steels or among different heats of a particular steel. The notched impact bending test, on the other hand, has been recognized for a considerable length of time as capable of revealing differences in impact properties among various steels tempered to the same strength level (i.e., the same tensile strength in a conventional tensile test), However, this test is very complex and its significance has not been clarified up to the present time. Of its three characteristic features-the high speed, the notch, and the bending-the notch has been found by Davidenkov2 to be the most potent embrittling factor. Recent investigations on low-alloy steels3,4,7,8 have shown static notch-bar tensile tests to be more lucid and to evaluate the metal properties in much the same manner as impact tests, In an attempt to analyze the fundamental nature of this test,8 it was found possible to separate the effects of the two basic characteristics of the stress pattern introduced by the presence of a circumferential notch, the stress state and the high initial stress concentration at the notch bottom, The major conclusions drawn from these previous investigations were as follows: I. The magnitude of the triaxiality at fracture depends primarily on the initial notch depth. Its effect is a great reduction in the average ductility (contraction in area at fracture in the notched section) as compared with that observed in uniaxial tension, This triaxial stress state occurs at a point in the interior of the notch specimen, It determines the notch ductility if the notch is mild and/or the metal possesses a considerable ductility. On the contrary, brittle specimens probably fracture on the metal surface (at the notch bottom) at which point biaxial stress state is present, This biaxiality also considerably reduces the ductility of the metal. For small notch ductilities the notch strength and the notch ductility become very sensitive to embrittling factors, This is contrary to the behavior of the ductility values derived from a conventional tensile test, which are comparatively insensitive.

The influence of up to 2 at. pct of Ni and Pt on the yield strength of mono- and polycrystalline high-purity iron has been evaluated at temperatures from + 25° to -196°C. Current theories of solid -solution strengthening fail to explain the experimental observations. The temperature dependence of yield stress was found to be less in the alloys than that in high-purity iron. The room-temperature yield stress increased with alloy content, but at —78°C the yield strength first decreased with increasing a1loy content. AS a result of many studies, a number of theories have been proposed for solid-solution strengthening. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate these theories, as applied to the solid-solution strengthening observed in Fe-Ni and Fe-Pt alloys. Of various theories of solid-solution strengthening, those of Cottrell,1,2 Fisher,3 Suzuki,4 and Mott and Nabarro5 are most prominent, and have been discussed widely in the literature.'-' Of the recent concepts of solid-solution hardening the work of Fleischer9 is notable. Each of these models has been applied to particular alloy systems with some success, but in general none has proved generally applicable. In many of the previous studies to assess the effects of alloy additions in ferrous systems, lack of adequate control of the purity and grain size of the materials has obscured strengthening effects, so that few comprehensive data relating composition, temperature, and change of lattice parameter have been determined. In the present investigation an attempt was made to obtain data which would be meaningful in evaluating the theories of strengthening. Materials of high purity were used to minimize extraneous impurity effects, and both single crystals and polycrystalline materials were studied to evaluate the effect of grain boundaries. Nickel and platinum were chosen as alloy additions, because both belong to the same chemical group and have the same crystal structure and valence, with markedly different atomic diameters. It appeared that some conclusions regarding atomic size effect on strengthening might be made. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES Fe-Ni and Fe-Pt alloys containing 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 at. pct alloy additions were prepared from high-purity materials. The iron was supplied by the American Iron and Steel Institute from a stock of 99.98 pct zone-refined iron prepared by Battelle Memorial Institute. The minimum purity of the nickel and platinum used for alloying was 99.98 and 99.999 pct, respectively. Alloys were prepared by levitation melting, cast into cylindrical copper molds, and cooled, all under a partial pressure (0.3 atm) of purified helium. Samples were 0.375 in. in diameter and weighed 20 to 25 g. Chemical analyses of the alloys are given in Table I. A sample of unalloyed iron also was cast as a control specimen.

The United States is supplying by far The greater part of all The petroleum products consumed in Great Britain, France and Italy. In addition To This, we have had To supply a marked increase in our domestic consumption, not only of The refined products, but of fuel oil as well. The combination has put a strain on The oil industry, which it is very difficult To meet. The oil companies, being under contract, had no option as To who should get Their oil first, and They were delivering pro rata To everybody; manufacturers of furniture were getting oil with The same regularity as Those who were making aeroplanes or munitions, and The oil companies felt that something should be done. The first order with which I had. anything To do was The priority list for The delivery of fuel oil. That list contained 12 classifications, beginning with bunker fuel and railroads, and you will realize The complexity of The situation when you hear that munitions plants are in class 11. The priority list held during The winter, but transportation became so bad, because of The number of ships that were Taken for trans-Atlantic use, that some of The oil companies were not able To deliver more Than about 60 per cent. into class 5, and nothing beyond that point. To add To the Troubles, the Tank-car mileage fell off. The average for 1917 was about 36 miles per car per day. in January, 1918, it dropped To about 8 miles, and it must have been nearly zero in The early part. of February. Because of The extremely severe winter, furthermore, pipe lines were not delivering anywhere near Their normal capacity. A new priority list has recently been promulgated, introducing a few slight changes. Natural gas has been brought under its provisions, and it has been extended To include The Pacific Coast, which was not considered necessary last winter. The situation in The gas industry is not satisfactory; it is estimated that There will be a decrease of 10 To 20 per cent. in The quantity of natural gas available This winter, as compared with last winter.

THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yav-api County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level. The underground mining operations extend from the 300 to the 3000-ft. level. There are about 45 stopes in active operation on the 17 levels

THE martensitic transformations occurring in ,B AgCd as a result of cold working at room temp.. a-ture and cooling below room ten1erature have been reported by Masson and Barrett.1 These authors found that simple cooling to 127°K caused body-cen-tered-cubic AgCd containing 53.0 at. pct Ag to transform to an orthorhombic structure, while mechanical deformation at room temperature was found to induce a hexagonal structure. Furthermore, they observed that the temperature at which martensite first appeared on cooling, Ms, and that at which the transformation was complete, MI, as well as the corresponding temperatures for the reversion on heating, As and Af, could be ascertained to ± 1°K, although they report these temperatures only for the alloy containing 53.0 at. pct Ag (51.96 wt pct). In the work reported here the temperature range of the transformation on cooling was studied as a function of composition, and further consideration was given to the relationship between the original bcc structure and the transformation-induced hexagonal and orthorhomic structures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE All samples studied were in the form of annealed 300-mesh powder and were prepared from the constituent metals in the manner described previously.1 The compositions in weight and atomic pct are listed in Columns 1 and 2 of Table I. Method of determination of transformation temperature was the same as utilized previously1—measurement of the intensity of X-rays diffracted by the transformation product. A diagram of the low-temperature sample mount is shown in Fig. 1. This mount was made to fit a GE model XRD-3 X-ray diffraction unit. The powder sample was varnished to a flat surface on a copper sample holder at A. This sample holder was soldered to a brass rod, B, which was in turn soldered to a second copper rod, C. Rod C could be cooled to 78°K by inserting it into a reservoir of liquid nitrogen, D. A heater coil of nichrome wire was wound at E on the sample holder, and by varying the current through the heater a thermal gradient could be maintained along brass rod B. Sample temperatures from 78°K up could be attained and held as long as needed. The sample holder and nitrogen reservoir were insulated by Styrofoam, F, and the sample itself was protected by two radiation shields, G. The X-ray beam entered and left the sample chamber through windoys in the supporting container at H and I. Sample temperatures were measured by a calibrated copper-constantan thermocouple varnished to the sample holder just out of the beam at A. The low-temperature structure had been found to possess orthorhombic symmetry1 and the expected positions of the diffraction maxima were known. Therefore the sample was aligned in the X-ray beam and the Geiger counter of the spectrometer set to receive the most intense orthorhombic reflection without an adjacent interfering cubic reflection. The oil industry was very active in Wyoming in 1936, in contrast to the several quiet years preceding. Production for the year again increased about 7 per cent, following an 8 per cent increase in 1935. During the year, 85 oil wells were completed, compared to 55 in 1935. Three gas wells were completed in 1936, and three in 1935. At the end of the year 45 wells were drilling, as compared to 55 drilling at the end of 1935. Two new oil fields and one new gas field were discovered in Wyoming during the year. In the year 1936 Wyoming produced 14,475,431 bbl. of oil, a gain of 1,001,081 bbl. over the 1935 figure of 13,474,350. This increase, in the main, was due to the taking of light oil from the newly developed Sundance sand pool at Lance Creek, and from the new fields, Quealy and Medicine Bow, which contributed their first production this year. Most of the other old fields either were partly shut in in competition with the new fields, or showed a normal decline. This was especially noticeable in the black-oil fields, where production had been slowly but steadily increasing for a number of years. During 1936 black-oil production decreased approximately 100,000 bbl. as compared to 1935. The only black-oil field to show marked increase was Garland, which managed to take the market from less favorably located fields. The production of Wyoming in 1936 was 11,358,757 bbl. of light oil and 3,116,674 bbl. of black oil. Salt Creek, with a production of 6,015,000 bbl., is still the largest single oil-producing field, accounting for 42 per cent of the year's total production. Lance Creek, an old field, with newly developed production in the Sundance sand, reached second place this year for the first time in its history, with a production of 1,878,486 bbl. Lance Creek production will almost equal that of Salt Creek in 1937, if the present rate of production is maintained during the coming year. Oregon Basin, a large black-oil field, held second place in 1935, but owing to a greatly lessened demand for its production, dropped back to third place in 1936. This was in part due to greatly increased light oil available, and in part to the greater supply of black oil available at

AFTER investigating the work of coal-dust fired reverberatories of the Canadian Copper Co., at Copper Cliff, Ontario, the management of the Washoe Reduction Works decided to experiment with and ascertain the advantages of using coal dust as a fuel in their reverberatories. Consequently, during the month of June, 1914, reverberatory furnace No. 8 was changed in order to use powdered coal as a fuel. The results obtained by this method of firing are gratifying and show a decided saving in cost of smelting as compared to grate firing with lump coal. The furnace, as remodeled; is 124 ft. long by 21 ft. wide, and varies in height from 8 ft. 6 in. at the back end to 5 ft. 7 in. at the skimming end. The general construction of the furnace is similar to that of the other furnaces at this plant. There are no side doors to this furnace, as it was thought that with the present arrangement for feeding no "fettling" or "claying" would be required. The interior of the furnace can be inspected through the burner port holes, after shutting off the burners and giving a few seconds' time for the gases inside the furnace to clear away. The charging is done on either side of the furnace from longitudinal hoppers, extending a distance of 74 ft. from the back end of the furnace. Leading from the hoppers into the furnace are 6-in. pipes, spaced 194 in. apart, through which the charge is intermittently dropped. The charge is kept well above the slag line at all times; in this way the side walls are protected and no fettling is needed on this portion of the furnace. The remainder of the furnace requires fettling. After operating for three months, we found that the bricks were eaten into along each side wall from the skimming door back to the point where the charge had been dropped. The depth of this cutting away was 8 in. close to the front end and gradually tapered to zero at a distance of 50 ft., and was greatest on the side of the furnace having the larger flue connection. Hoppers will be put in for the entire length of furnace, from which fettling material will be dropped, to prevent this cutting.

At the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rcjections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blastfurnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. The writer has been unable to find much information relative to tests made to determine the effect of forging on the specific density of steel. The opinion, however, among men engaged in the business, seems to be that forging greatly compresses or consolidates the steel. While such is doubtless the case with spongy or porous steel, the following experiments indicate that there can be little or no change in the density with steel initially free from cavities. Ten ingots of basic open-hearth steel cast as shown in Fig. 1 were used in the experiments. All the specimens were 0.53 carbon with all other elements the same, the analysis being determined from drillings taken midway between the center and outside of the upper end, as shown in Fig. 2. The specimens were selected from over one thousand ingots so that the tests could be comparative for the work done in forging only, but no two of the ingots were cast in the same heat. Each ingot remained in the mold approximately 30 min., when it was removed and sir-cooled. About 12 hr. later, when the temperature had been reduced to approximately that of the surrounding atmosphere, the head was discarded and the ingot heated in an oil furnace to approximately 2250" F. (1235" C). Approximately 1 min. was required to forge under the steam hammer to 1 1/4 in. (31.75 mm.), rough diameter, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. All ingots were allowed to air-cool after forging. Cylinders 1/2 in. (17.7 mm.) in diameter and 1/2 in. high were then turned from the forged and unforged parts of the ingots and numbered. The ten pairs of specimens were submitted to Louis E. Endsley, Professor of Railway Mechanical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh; A. N. Talbot, Professor of Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois; L. Z. Slater, chief chemist, Scullin Steel Co., St. Louis, Mo. The Spies mine is located in the eastern half of the northwest quarter of section 2443-35, near the village of Iron River, Mich., and is operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Speaking generally, the jasper hanging walls of most of the deposits in the Iron River district dip at a steep angle and are exceedingly strong, standing without caving, even after mining has been continued for years and after large excavations have been made. The ore is fairly hard and tough and contains no slippage faces. It occurs in large masses, which are often egg shape, with the smaller end down, and can be mined in open stopes without the use of timber. The common system employed in the district is the shrinkage stope, or some modification of it. The Spies system was developed to utilize the advantages of the open-stope method and to avoid the disadvantages of the shrinkage stope. The Spies shaft was sunk to such a depth that the bottom, or third level, was in rock at a short distance below the bottom of the orebody, the shape and extent of which had been previously determined by diamond drilling. This is shown in plan and by the ore contours at the first, second, and third levels in Fig. 1, and in section in Figs. 2 to 7. In order to provide the necessary mills and raises, three parallel crosscuts were driven on 25 ft. centers on the bottom level. Drifts on the second and first levels were driven to the orebody and followed the foot wall in a southerly direction to the end of the ore. In crosscut 3, Fig. 1, raises 30, 40, 50, and 60 were carried up on the foot wall and holed into the second level, and were ultimately carried up and holed into the first level. These foot-wall raises carry the pipes and ladders, provide a means of ventilation, and furnish safe communication to all working places in the stope. From crosscuts 1, 2, and 3, raises were completed to a height of 32 ft., or the elevation of the first sublevel. They were then connected by east and west crosscuts to the main foot-wall raises 30, 40, 50, and 60, shown in Fig. 4. The crosscuts in raises 1 to 5 were then driven west and the

The effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. Increasing the chromium, vandium, or aluminum content increased the strength of quenched structures with chromium being the most effective strengthener. Appreciable aging response was obtained with low chromium alloys, but high chromium alloys age softened rather than. hardened. High vanadium contents had a similar effect. Aluminum additions shifted the aging behavior toward that observed in lower chromium alloys, enabling high chromium alloys to be age hardened. DURING the course of titanium alloy development many a and a-ß alloys have been evolved to commercial status. However, only one all-ß alloy has achieved this same stature. This is the Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al alloy. It is characterized by a very sluggish ß-phase decomposition reaction such that very slow cooling rates can retain the 0 phase at room temperature. In addition, very high strength levels can be obtained by long-time aging treatments. Combinations of cold or warm working followed by aging produce even further improvements in strength. This paper describes the results of a research program in which the effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Electrolytically refined, high-purity titanium was used as the alloy base for these studies. Iodide chromium, electrolytically refined vanadium granules, and high-purity aluminum sheet were used as alloying additions. The compositions of interest were melted as 250-g ingots in a direct current arc melting furnace under a flowing atmosphere of argon. The ingots were hot forged to 3/4-in.-diam bars, vacuum annealed for 6 hr at 1800°F to reduce residual hydrogen content, and then hot swaged to 1/4-in.-diam rods. Fabrication history, and interstitial analyses after fabrication are given in Table I. All specimens to be heat treated were sealed in Vycor capsules under a partial pressure of argon. Samples used to define the ß transus were quenched from temperatures ranging from 1350° to 1100°F after holding at temperature for 15 min. Samples for aging studies were quenched from above the ß transus temperature and then aged for up to 64 hr at 750°F and for 100 hr at 850°, 900°, and 950°F. The effects of straining prior to aging were also investigated. The results of these studies were used to select the heat treatments for the tensile specimen blanks. Heat treatments of the tensile specimens are described in Table 11. Alloys were aged after solution heat treatment or after solution heat treatment and cold swaging to 50 pct reduction in area.
