The formation of grain boundary grooves on surfaces of poly crystalline samples of cobalt and iron immersed in liquid lead has been studied. The grooves form by volume diffusion of the solutes cobalt and iron in the liquid. The diffusion coefficients of the solutes in liquid lead are derived from the measured rate of grooving. The diffusion coefficients are described by the relation D = Do exp (-Q/RT), with, for cobalt, Do = 4.6 x 10-4 sq cm per sec and Q = 5300 ± 800 cal per mole, and for iron, DO = 4.9 x 10-3 sq cm per sec and Q = 10,500 ± 1500 cal per mole. LIQUID metal-solid metal interactions occur at solid-liquid interfaces. Interfacial energy provides a driving force to change the morphology of the interface. Mullins1,2 has derived expressions for the kinetics of interface morphology changes driven by capillarity. These expressions can be applied to an isothermal system of a solid in equilibrium with a liquid saturated with the solid. Surface profile changes can occur by volume diffusion of the solute in the liquid, by volume self-diffusion in the solid, and by interfacial diffusion at the liquid-solid interface. A groove will form at the intersection of a grain boundary with a solid-liquid interface, reducing the total interfacial free energy of the system. The solid-liquid interfacial energy ? must be greater than half the grain boundary energy of the solid ?6 for Mullins' calculations to apply. If ? is less than ?b/2, then the liquid penetrates the boundaries, separating the grains rather than forming grooves. Boundary penetration did not occur in the work described here. where CO is the equilibrium volume concentration of the solid in the liquid, Dv the volume diffusion coefficient of the solid in the liquid, ? the interfacial free energy of the solid-liquid interface, O the atomic volume of the solid crystal, k Boltzmann's constant and T the absolute temperature. Eqs. [1] and [2 ] also apply to grooving by volume self-diffusion in the solid,1 with CoODv = D Self, where DSelf is the volume self-diffusion coefficient of the solid. For a grooving mechanism of interfacial diffusion at the solid-liquid interface, the groove width is given by2 where CS is the interfacial concentration of the diffusing species, and DS is the interfacial diffusion coefficient. Eqs. [1] and [3] can be used to determine the mechanism of groove growth. A t1/3 dependence of the growth indicates volume diffusion and t1/4 indicates interfacial diffusion. In some cases, volume diffusion and interfacial diffusion both can contribute substantially to the grooving process, causing the time dependence to be intermediate between t 1/3 and t1/4.3 For these cases, the relative contributions of the two processes can be separated.4 However, in many cases, one process will be dominant, and the data can be analyzed on the basis of Eq. [1] or Eq. [3] alone. The time dependences for volume diffusion in a liquid and volume self-diffusion in a solid are the same. However, the self-diffusion contribution of the solid is usually negligible compared to volume diffusion in the liquid. After the grooving mechanism has been determined, Eq. [1] or Eq. [3 ] yields the kinetic parameter A or B. The kinetic parameter can be used to calculate values for the unknown quantities in the product CD?. Usually C is known or can be estimated. If ? is known, then D can be calculated. In a measurement of grain boundary grooving of copper in liquid lead,' the time dependence indicated volume diffusion in the liquid. The quantities Co, Dv, and ? were obtained from the literature, giving excellent agreement between the observed values of A and the values calculated from Eq. [2 ].5 In a study of the grooving of several refractory metals in liquid tin and liquid silver, A1len6 educed that grooves formed by volume diffusion in the liquid. In a study of nickel in a nickel sulfide melt, Steidel, Li, and spencer7 found volume diffusion grooving kinetics. Both Dv and ? were unknown, so they could not obtain either one separately, though they did obtain a reasonable value for the temperature dependence of the product Dv ?. Several methods have been used to obtain surface profiles. It can be done by sectioning through the interface7 or by chemically removing the liquid from the solid surface after solidification of the liquid.6 However, if the liquid dewets the solid on removing the solid from the melt, then the interface can be observed directly. This method was used previously' and was utilized also in the present study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Lead of 99.999 pct purity was obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co. Cobalt sheet was obtained from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Ltd., with a nominal purity of 99.9 pct, the principal impurities being nickel, iron, copper, carbon, and sulfur. The sheet was

The comprehensive study of the copper-manganese-zinc alloy system in the Bureau of Mines Laboratories has so far been principally concerned with alloys that lie within the alpha solid solution field of the system. Two regions, one centering about 65 per cent copper, 10 manganese and 25 zinc, and the other centering about 70 per cent copper, 20 manganese, 10 zinc, have been carefully examined. These have indicated that when the alloys are made with electrolytic manganese considerable amounts may be readily introduced and that the strength and hardness are increased without excessive losses in ductility. In the course of the work of establishing the limits of the alpha solid solution range,3 enough of certain of the alloys was prepared to permit determination of their- physical properties at a future date. The 60 per cent copper alloys concerned here are part of that series. They cross through the alpha field and into the adjacent alpha plus beta and alpha plus X fields, and are of interest because they offer some information on the effects of manganese on alloys lying in these fields. Composition and Fabrication of Alloys The chemical composition of the alloys involved is given in Table I. They were intended to contain 60 per cent copper with manganese increasing from 5 to 25 per cent in 5 per cent steps and zinc decreasing from 35 to 15 per cent. The analyses are so close to the intended composition that the alloys mill be referred to hereafter by their norninal compositions. They were finished into sheet by cold-rolling and intermediate annealing procedurzs calculated to produce sheet $i6 in. thick, cold-reduced by 20, qo, 60, and 80 per cent in thickness. Physical properties were determined on standard flat tensile specimens with 4-in. gauge length, although the test gauge section used was 2 in. The properties were obtained on cold-worked material and on material annealed at temperatures ranging from 700' to r500°F. after 60 per cent cold reduction. Since an annealing temperature of 1200°F.

Hugh E. McKinstry (Professor of Geology, Laboratory of Mining Geology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.) Pre-Cambrian age for the Coeur d'Alene mineralization, as indicated by isotope studies and recently discussed by Silverman, Long, and Kulp' would explain some features of the mineralogy of the district that have long been a puzzle. In the Silver Belt, especially in the Sunshine mine, lead-zinc min erali zation passes downward into tetrahedrite ore. Although commercially speaking this is a rich silver zone, the silver is, quantitatively, a mere impurity amounting to a small fraction of 1 pct. In effect the zonal change is from lead-zinc down into copper mineralization—-the usual zonal change that occurs in many districts. In the Burke-Mullan portion of the district, on the other hand, lead-zinc ore does not pass downward into copper mineralization of the Sunshine type. Instead, pyrrhotite appears in depth while the tenor in lead and zinc declines. The change occurs at increasingly greater depth away from the Gem stocks, deepening irregularly by some 3000 ft within two to four miles. As noted by Crosby, biotite, grunerite, and garnet appear in the deep zone. The marked difference between this apparent zonal change and the more nomal change to a copper zone is quite explainable if already existing pre-Cambrian veins have been locally metamorphosed by a Tertiary intrusive. The chief obstacle to this explanation is the evidence that mineralization cuts Laramide intrusives, but evidence on this point is conflicting as indicated by Crosby's observations and summary. This is not the first instance of a problem in determining the time-relationship of mineralization to a spatially associated intrusive. At the Noranda mine veins of chalcopyrite extend into a diabase dike which apparently cuts the ore, although Price2 concludes that the ore is later. However, at the Normetal mine diabase of a similar dike is thought3 to intrude the orebody but is cut by stringers of chalcopyrite. In the Sullivan Mine, B. C.,4 galena follows a fracture in a larnprophyre dike which, itself, cuts the main orebody. In the Sudbury district dikes of olivine diabase are clearly younger than the nickel ore, yet where they cut the Creighton orebody they contain stringers of chalcopyrite. In the laboratory, Hawley5 has developed veinlets of sulfide (chalcopyrite) it] silicate gangue by heating specimens of ore in a stream of H2S at 410 °C. From this and other evidernce. it seems clear that sulfides can be transferred from one site to another — at least through short distances — at temperatures well below their melting points. It would seem then that even if sulfide Mineralization in the Gem stocks can be shown unequ ivocably to be later than the intrusive the possibility of "remobiliza tion" need not be more than local. Thus the zonal relationships are quite in accord with a pre-Cambrian age for original deposition of the lead, zinc, copper, silver, and uranium in the Coeur d'Alene district. REFERENCES 1. A. In all three principal dunite dikes, minute disseminated grains of pyrrhotite are to be seen in the fresh rock in amounts less than 1 pct. Traces of nickel have been reported from many such specimens. Nickeliferous pyrrhotite is the principal nickel-bearing mineral, although olivine contains very minor amounts of nickel in solid solution, substituting for magnesium and iron. Such occurences are of no economic significance. Nickel analyses of possible economic significance (up to 3 pct Ni) have been returned from samples taken near the margins of the two large western dunite dikes. These samples were from schistose zones along and within the dike walls. The mineralized shear zones, up to 30 ft wide, strike N 30 W and dip from 65" to 90" west. They consist of layers of hard, fresh, green-gray dunite, mineralized with finely disseminated pyrrhotite. These layers alternate with layers of soft, black, oxidized schistose dunite up to 1 ft wide, well mineralized with pyrrhotite and tabular-fractured pentlandite in crystals up to 1/4-in. diam. Sulfides identified in polished sections were chiefly pyrrhotite and pentlandite, with much smaller amounts of chalcopyrite. There are two varieties of pyrrhotite. One develops a fine polish and conforms to published descriptions. The other is slightly darker and browner, does not polish as well, and displays flamelike growth or intergrowth structure when etched with nitric acid fumes. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite crystallized contemporaneously in the form of veins in the olivine and as fillings of the interstices of euhedral olivine crystals. Chalcopyrite replaces the other sulfides. The most striking feature of the deposits is their occurrence in intimately fractured and schistose zones in the dunite where faulting has been localized along the contacts of the sediments and the dunite dikes. Though far too little detailed work has been done to be certain, there appears to be a higher concentration of sulfides in the shear zones along the margins of dike apophyses, sediment reentrants, and strike and dip irregularities. Much more study would be required in order to submit a plausible theory of formation of the nickel deposits, supported by laboratory and field evidence. Results of the present study, especially localization of the metals by fracturing, certainly indicate that the nickel concentrations were brought about by precipitation of nickel sulfides from fluids that used the fractures as a means of ingress. Studies of nickel sulfide deposits throughout the world have demonstrated that such sulfides were deposited at considerable depths and at temperatures of several hundred degrees. This would rule out the possibility of groundwater as the transporting medium. The two possible sources of hot nickel-bearing fluids are quartz diorite and gabbro. The first possibility is that large volumes of fluids, expelled from the quartz diorite magma during its crystallization, obtained a supply of nickel by altering the nickeliferous olivine of the dunites. The likelihood of this process is lessened by the recognition that, although the dunites show some alteration to serpentine, talc, and trem-olite, they are for the most part remarkably fresh outside the schistose zones. The worldwide association of nickel with basic rocks, together with the presence of pyrrhotite in thin films on joint planes of the gabbro on Jumbro Mountain, favors the gabbro source. The world's production of petroleum in 1926 amounted to nearly 150 million long tons, of which India contributed 0.72 per cent. In 1927, this figure jumped to some 172 million long tons, of which the Indian proportion, on a practically stationary production, fell to 0.64 per cent. In 1928, there was another substantial rise in the world's production, which reached the figure of over 181 million tons. In 1929, there was another jump to over 202 million tons, but in 1930 the world's production fell to about 193% million tons, in 1931 to about 187 million tons, and in 1932 to about 183 million tons, while in 1933 the production rose again to about 202 million tons, in 1934 to about 215 million tons, and in 1935 to 233 million tons1. Decreases were shown by Poland, Sarawak, Egypt, Rumania and France. All other important producers showed an increase in production, by far the largest being due to Iraq, as a result of the opening of the pipe line to the Mediterranean. The United States contributed 60.9 per cent of the world's supply in 1935, Russia 10.7 per cent, Venezuela 9.4 per cent, Rumania 3.9 per cent and Iran 3.1 per cent. In 1928, India contributed 0.64 per cent, which fell to 0.60 per cent in 1929 and rose to 0.62 per cent in 1930, 0.63 per cent in 1931, and 0.64 per cent in 1932, and fell again to 0.62 per cent in 1933, to 0.60 per cent in 1934 and to 0.50 per cent in 1935; her position on the list of petroleum-producing countries fell from eleventh in 1929 to twelfth in 1930 to 1933, her place being taken by Trinidad and to thirteenth in 1934 and 1935, owing to the production by Iraq. The production of petroleum in India (including Burma2) increased slightly from 322,025,280 gal.3 in 1934 to 322,662,336 gal. in 1935, the highest figure in the history of the industry. The increase in 1935 is due to an increase of some 4 million gallons in Assam, almost offset by a decrease of 31/2 million gallons in Burma. This increase in output in 1935 was accompanied by an increase in estimated value amounting to Rs. 22,73,550 (£170,944).

DEVELOPMENT of a simple radioactive tracer technique for measurement of the diffusion coefficient of calcium ion in liquid slag has already been reported. The investigation was of a preliminary nature designed to explore the possibilities of using radioactive isotopes and to establish a method, and no great accuracy was claimed for the results. It was shown, however, that Ca15 could be used successfully, and the values obtained for the diffusion coefficient appeared to be of the right order of magnitude. However, it was considered that a better technique could be devised for carrying out the diffusion. The experiments were, therefore, continued to find a more accurate method, to check the calcium results, and to extend the investigation to include measurements of the diffusion coefficient of silicon in the same slag. There were two flaws in the original technique. Convection was the cause of too many failures, and the interface between the two slags in the diffusion cell was curved rather than plane, probably due to a surface tension effect caused by the addition of the tracer Ca45 in the form of chloride. Two methods of overcoming these defects were tried. Since it was planned to study diffusion of the short-lived isotope Si"' also, the development of methods was restricted to those which gave promise of being reasonably rapid. Method 1—The principle was identical to that previously used with respect to the diffusion conditions, but there were three differences in technique. Temperature control was more rigid, the tracer was added to the slag as Ca45O rather than the chloride and, finally, an effort was made to translate to high temperatures the elegant method developed by Cohen and BruinV or bringing together the two liquid layers and beginning the diffusion. A master slag was melted in graphite, ground to a fine powder, and analyzed (38.5 pct Ca0-20.9 pct Al2O3-40.5 pct SiO2). The tracer was received as Ca45C12 in an aqueous solution of CaC12 + HC1. From this, calcium oxalate was precipitated, ignited to calcium oxide, and added as such to the slag to give an activity of approximately 5 µc per g. The mixture was then melted into the form of a cylinder 3/16 in. diam and about 1 in. long. A solution identical to the tracer solution without Ca45 was given exactly the same treatment. The resulting Ca40O was mixed with that slag which was to form the tracer-free half of the diffusion cell, and this was likewise melted into a cylinder of the same size. The paper describes a cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte sodium sulphate acid and a catholyte containing caustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to form soda and reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant solution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate site a high-grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. the results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes which permit transfer of using or cations during electrolysis are described. The Castle Dome copper deposit is of the porphyry type and occurs in a body of quartz monzonite intruded into the pre-Cambrian formations and possibly into the lower part of Paleozoic limestones. The hypogene sulphide minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, and a little molybdenite, sphalerite, and galena. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are disseminated or occur in small closely spaced veins. The hypogene mineralization shows distinct zoning in the distribution of pyrite and chalcopyrite, so that the mineralized area can be subdivided into pyritc and chalcopyrite zones. Supergene enrichment, though not extensive, played an important part in the formation of the ore body, the chalcopyritc zone being the pro-tore. Several thin, gently dipping, diabase sills occur in the mineralized area, and the copper content of the rock in and near these sills is substantially higher than average. The formation of the ore body was caused by the combined effects of three forces: I. Zoning of the hypogene mineralization, 2. Richer copper metallization associated with the diabase sills, and 3. Supergene enrichment. Introduction The Castle Dome copper deposit is about 5 miles west of Miami, Arizona, and about 3 miles west of the Miami-Inspiration ore body. The Castle Dome open-pit mine is on the south flank of Porphyry Mountain, a prominent landmark of the region. In 1941 the deposit was being explored by the Miami Copper Co., but the exploration program was cut short when the decision was made to develop the property as a war project. The Castle Dome Copper Co., Inc., was organized as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Miami Copper Co., and arrangements were made with Defense Plant Corp. for developing and equipping the mine and for construction of a concentrating plant. Construction and development work was begun in January 1942, and milling operations started June so, 1943. Since that date, the mine has been in continuous operation by the Castle Dome Copper Co, under a lease agreement with Defense Plant Corp. producing copper at an average rate of 4,000,000 lb per month. To January I, 1946 the total production amounted to 121,088,000 lb of copper,4,271 oz of gold, and 211,755 oz of silver. A detailed study of the copper deposit and the surrounding area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey in June 1943. Other members of the Survey participating in the work were C. M. Gilbert, G. L. Quick, and J. P. Albers. The results of this work will be published as a comprehensive report by the Geological Survey. The reflection method in seismic prospecting has aroused much interest in the past few years. The purpose of the present paper is to present the method of reflections in the mapping of geologic structure and also to give some indication of its limitations. The reflection method is well adapted to the mapping of geologic structure in the Mid-Continent fields, and has been found most useful there. The refraction method is ideally suited to the finding of structures, such as domes, where the amount of relief is very large. This explains the brilliant success of the refraction method in the Gulf Coastal region of Texas and Louisiana. The additional fact that salt has a much higher velocity than the surrounding sediments made their discovery much easier. By the use of the reflection method, differences of relief of 25 to 50 ft. to the mile may be detected at a depth of 5000 ft., and the depth points accurately plotted on a map. This is hardly possible by the use of the refraction method. The reflection method has been in almost continuous use in the Mid-Continent area since 1926, but very little, if anything, has been published until recently'(7) † regarding either the method or the results. The discovery of several oil fields is now attributed to the use of the reflection method. Reflection methods have been used by the Germans to find the thickness of the ice of several glaciers. WheN attempting to lift mill pulp containing a considerable percentage of wolframite, in an ordinary bucket elevator, difficulty was encountered from the tendency of the tungsten minerals to settle, on account of their high specific gravity. Lifts not exceeding 20 ft. (6 m.) could be accomplished without particular difficulty, because there was insufficient time for consolidation of the heavy minerals in the bottom of the bucket; but with higher lifts, the heavy tungsten minerals would settle so solidly that when the bucket turned over at the top of the elevator the contents could be only partially dumped. In this case it was necessary to lift the material a distance of 34 ft. (10m.); hence some means had to be adopted to prevent settling, at least to such an extent that the material could be dumped from the buckets. To reduce the carrying time to a sufficient extent would have required a belt speed of 475 ft. (144.7 m.) per minute, which was not feasible. It was decided to try, by vibrating the belt about midway of its span, to keep the material sufficiently agitated during elevation to prevent settling. Underneath the rising side of the belt was placed a 12-in. (30.48-cm.) idler pulley, 18 ft. (5.5 m.) up in the total lift of 34 ft. The idler pulley was set eccentric by % in. (19 mm.) and it was hoped that the vibration thus imparted to the belt, running at a speed of 280 ft. (85 m.) per minute, would prevent settling in the buckets. It was found that the pressure of the belt on the idler, due to the small inclination of the elevator, was not sufficient to overcome sliding on the idler, and the agitation was insufficient to accomplish the desired purpose. The idler was then connected to the drive shaft of the elevator through an intermediate pulley, gearing down to a speed of 20 r.p.m., so that a positive vibration was imparted to the belt; this imparted enough motion to the belt to prevent settling and the contents of buckets dumped satisfactorily. THE reflection method in seismic prospecting has aroused much interest in the past few years. The purpose of the present paper is .to present the method of reflections in the mapping of geologic structure and also to give some indication of its limitations. The reflection method is well adapted to the mapping of geologic structure in the Mid-Continent fields, and has been found most useful there. The refraction method is ideally suited to the finding of structures, such as domes, where the amount of relief is very large. This explains the brilliant success of the refraction method in the Gulf Coastal region of Texas and Louisiana. The additional fact that salt has a much higher velocity than the sur-rounding sediments made their discovery much easier. By the use of the reflection method, differences of relief of 25 to 50 ft. to the mile may be detected at a depth of 5000 ft., and the depth points accurately plotted on a map. This is hardly possible by the use of the refraction method. The reflection method has been in almost continuous use in the Mid-Continent area since 1926, but very little, if anything, has been published until recently(7) ? regarding either the method or the results. The dis-covery of several oil fields is now attributed to the use of the reflec-tion method. Reflection methods have been used by the Germans to find the thick-ness of the ice of several glaciers. THIS paper presents results on an exten¬sion into the realm of high-carbon steels of some work recently published' on the effects -of time at temperature, quenching temperature and prior structure on the hardenability of one 0.20 and four 0.40 per cent carbon alloy steels. It was shown at that time that unless the conditions of time, temperature and prior structure are substantially the same in performing the hardenability test as in conducting harden¬ing of parts in production, the correlation of hardenability information with the [ ] hardness and properties of production parts is often not of satisfactory accuracy. The general effects of these variables on the austenitic grain size, distribution of excess carbides and critical cooling rate have been known for many years and one or more have been investigated by Shepherd ,2 3 Davenport and Bain,4 Digges,5,6 Digges and Jordan,7 Post and associates' and Roberts and Mehl,9 to mention only a few. There has been no systematic investigation, however,' into the quantitative variations produced on the hardenability of commercial high¬carbon steels by changes in these factors of time, temperature and prior structure. PROCEDURE A plain carbon hypereutectoid steel, S.A.E. 52100 and Graph-Mo, a molyb¬denum-bearing high-carbon steel contain¬ing some graphite, were chosen for this investigation. The chemical analyses of these electric-furnace steels are given in Table I. [ ] The procedure used was exactly that reported previously,' hence the details will not be repeated here. Normalized (1650°F.) and spheroidized prior structures were utilized on all steels with hot-rolled and quenched (1600°F. oil) prior conditions added for the plain carbon steel. The end-quench test developed by Jominy10 was selected for use in this investigation and, with the noted exceptions, the American Society for Testing Materials standard. procedure was followed. The effect of time at temperature was examined at intervals of 0, 10 and 40 min. and 4 hr., and a few i6-hr. tests were run. Trinidad, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10" and 11" N., and opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,-250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi. (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it even encroaches on the lake. Vessigny Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated 2 mi. (3.2 km.) south of Pitch Lake. Lot One Field, operated by the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and Stollmeyer, Ltd., is situated 3 mi. south of Pitch Lake upon Lot One of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Parry Lands Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., is situated 31/2 mi. south of Pitch Lake on Lot Three of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Point Fortin Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., is situated at Point Fortin, 6 mi. southwest of Pitch Lake. Fyzabad Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles southwest of Fyzabad Village and 6 mi. south-southeast of Pitch Lake. INTRODUCTION THE development of residual stress in strip during rolling has not been systematically studied. A few scattered papers1-3 mention the existence of residual stresses in rolled strip or touch upon some of their consequences,4 but there is no report of experimental studies in the literature describing the effect of roll diameter, strip thickness, reduction per pass, metal or metal temper on the magnitude of residual stresses developed in strip. A knowledge of the effect of these factors is of utmost importance since the present trend in some mills to roll thicker castings brings the rolling operation directly into that set of conditions which, as will be brought out in the present paper, can develop residual stresses of a high order of magnitude. Fundamentally, residual stresses are developed when a metal is inhomogeneously unloaded from a plastic stress state. A quantitative treatment of the problem requires a reasonably complete understanding of both the plastic stress state existing in the metal during deformation and the elastic stress state that would exist in the metal if the metal deformed as a perfectly elastic body. Our knowledge of either state during rolling is so meager that we can make no more than certain limited predictions. The external stress state* operating between the roll and the metal consists of compressive stresses acting almost perpendicularly to the strip surface but vary [ ] ing in intensity both across the width of the strip and along the length of contact between the roll and the strip. An example of such a stress distribution is shown in Fig I. The nature of the internal stress state, produced by this distribution, is not known. Various investigators,5-7 however, have felt that a qualitative similarity must exist between the internal stress state so produced and that produced in a wide strip that is compressed between two flat-nosed punches. In the latter case the external stress state is represented by a uniformly distributed compressive stress acting perpendicularly over the face of the tool. Although wildcatting was hampered by the general overproduction and low price of crude, several developments, worthy of note in the history of the petroleum industry in the Rocky Mountain region, were made in 1927. This district records production from six new fields, two of these having been heretofore productive of gas. Deeper pay horizons were found in two other oil fields. In order to facilitate transportation from fields, six new oil pipe lines were completed or in the course of construction at the end of the year, and one line is proposed for 1928. Four gas lines were completed, one was under construction, and one was proposed for 1928. The total production in 1927 in the Rocky Mountain district was 29,591,379 bbl.,' a decrease of 7,771,991 bbl., or 21 per cent., fro111 the previous year. This was occasioned by natural decline and the general curtailment of production and drilling. A review of the development by states follows. Colorado Production from horizons in the Morrison and Sundance at Craig and at Ilrs Dome, and the bringing in of the deepest producing well in the Rocky Mountain district on North McCalluin anticline (Waltlrn) in Jackson County are the outstanding developments for the year in Colorado. In March the Midwest Refining Co.'s Parkinson 21 SD, SW SE, Sec. 22 T p. 4 N R 92 W, Iles Domr, Moffat County Colorado, found gas in sands in the Morrison estimated at 15,000,000 cu. ft., and at 3242 ft. an oil sand was encountered in the Sundance. Initial production from this horizon was 2575 bbl. in this well. This structure previously was only productive of water in the sands of the Dakota group but has been producing shale oil from horizons in the Benton. The second well completed by the Midwest Refining Co., No. 18 SD in Sec. 23 was also productive of gas in the Morrison and made an initial of 300 bbl. from sands in the Sundance. By the end of the year three other wells wrrc nearing the completion stage but none of them indicate that they will be as big producers as the discovery. To date the productive area has

THE Achotla mill of the Cia. Minera de Pe[n]oles is of special interest in that it is one of the few still employing the chloridization process. The ore milled comes from the Suriana mine and consists of both oxide and sulphide, from neither of which can the gold or silver be extracted by a simple cyanide treatment. The mill was built in 1927, after several years of study in the development of the process1, and operated from December of that year until October 1930. Operations were resumed in February 1935, and have been continuous since, treating approximately 5000 tons per month, while the mine is getting up to full tonnage of 6500 tons per month. Transportation Of Supplies The property is in Guerrero, Mexico, some 175 km. by airline southwest of Mexico City. The mill site is at Temisco (Fig. I), 8 km. from the Balsas River and 4.8 km. by aerial tram from the mine. At Temisco are the general office, shops, warehouses and laboratory serving both mine and mill. Here sufficient water is available either from a small creek running through the property or from the Balsas River, also convenient and ample storage space for the tailings. With the exception of the mine timber and a few native building materials which may be obtained locally, all supplies for both mine and mill are brought down the Balsas River from Balsas, the terminal of a Mexican National Railway line out of Mexico City. The method of transportation on the river is interesting. Rapids with very fast water are numerous, prohibiting the use of mechanically propelled boats. Those used resemble large, flat-bottomed rowboats some 22 ft. long by 8 ft. wide (Fig. 2). They are manned by two oarsmen sitting in the bow, each handling one large oar, and usually another man in the stern who, with his oar, assists in steering the boat, especially when the rapids are run. Development and exploratory work in Mississippi during 1934 was rather active, resulting in the expansion of the proven area and the drilling of a number of important wildcat wells. Mississippi showed a decrease in drilling operations during 1934. There were 36 completions from 18 counties during this period compared with 58 completions from 22 counties during 1933. There was a considerable decrease in activity in the Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties with only 9 completions, resulting in 8 gas wells and 1 dry hole compared with 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells and 7 dry holes during 1933. Leasing and geophysical work was reported from several sections of Mississippi last year. Extensive exploration and drilling were carried on in Lamar, Hancock, Pearl River, Greene and Stone counties and on the flanks of the Jackson anticline. Exploration will be continued in these areas during 1935. Four important wildcats were completed during 1934, all of which were reported as being structurally high, but without having important shows of oil or gas. These tests were: Hix and Germany's, J. J. Newman Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 21-4N.-15W., Lamar County, abandoned at 3520 it. in the Wilcox; United Gas Public Service Company's Davis No. 1, sec. 30-1N.-5W., Greene County, abandoned at 7439 ft.; Gulf Refining Company's May L. Williams No. 1, sec. 33-5S.-17W., Pearl River County, abandoned at 4800 ft.; and Clarke County Oil Company's S. B. Kirkland No. 1, sec. 10-2 N.-16E., abandoned at 4002 ft. in the Eutaw. Another interesting wildcat was Gulf Refining Company's Dantzler Lumber Co. No. 6, sec. 22-4S.-llW., Stone County, abandoned at 7700 ft. (according to reports below the Selma chalk). A total of 114 of the 132 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field are still producing and have a combined open-flow capacity of 4,145,-696,000 cu. ft. Four of the abandoned gas producers were never connected to the lines. The open-flow capacity of three wells in the Amory field is approximately 1,000,000 cu. ft. Producing against a line pressure of 50 lb., the demand during December greatly exceeded the capacity.

Reported world production of natural diamonds approximates 40,000,000 carats a year (1980). The Republic of Zaire is the leading producer, with an output which is primarily industrial rather than gem grade. The USSR ranks second, the Republic of South Africa third, and Botswana, fourth. Diamonds are also mined in South-West Africa (Namibia), Angola, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and other African countries. In the western hemisphere, Brazil and Venezuela are the principal producers (Fig. 1). A very small output of diamonds is mined today it India, which was the first source of commercial production. In the US, efforts at commercial diamond mining have been confined to a small area near Murfreesboro, AR. The first diamond was found in a kimberlite pipe there in 1906. Small-scale trial mining has not, however, proved economical. Since diamonds were first discovered over 2,000 years ago, only about 260 tons have been mined. In order to obtain I g (5 carats) of diamonds, it is necessary to remove and process approximately 25 tons of rock. Recovering this small percentage involves a combination of highly developed techniques in mining, quarrying, and earth-moving, and extremely sophisticated recovery processes. End Uses Diamonds are used for two unrelated end uses; gem diamonds are jewels of great beauty while industrial diamonds are essential materials of modern industry. Although imitation stones are substituted for the gem diamond, none of these matches its properties sufficiently well to offer real competition. Synthetic industrial diamonds are now of a quality and size that permit them to be substituted for natural diamond in numerous industrial applications. For example, synthetic diamonds are available today in sizes up to 100 stones per carat (14/16 US mesh size). In addition, polycrystalline synthetic diamond inserts, such as De Beers Syndite®, General Electric's Compax® and Stratapax® and Megadiamond's Megapax® have replaced natural diamond in turning tools, mining and oil drilling bits and dressing tool applications. Gem Diamonds A diamond is a natural prism. It has the ability to bounce light rays (reflection), to bend them (refraction), and to break them into all colors of the rainbow (dispersion). This ability to modify light gives the diamond three characteristics for providing beauty. First is brilliance, the reflection of light back to the eye. Second is fire, dispersion of light into the colors of the spectrum. Third is scintillation, the "twinkling" that occurs when the diamond is moved (Bauer, 1969). The skill of the diamond cutter is required to unlock the brilliant, fiery beauty of a gem diamond (Fisher, 1966). Diamond-cutting skills have gradually developed over the centuries. The first cutters, in India, learned how to grind one rough diamond against another to remove their "skins" and to give them various shapes. This revealed some fire and beauty, but little compared to that of the diamonds that are cut today.
