Deep cover retreat mining (overburden in excess of 750 ft) is an important emerging issue which will intensify in the future as the more easily mined shallow seam reserves are depleted. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics indicates that deep cover pillar recovery accounts for a disproportionate share of the underground coal mine roof/rib fall fatalities and injuries. Past research has shown that previously recommended Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) stability factors (SF’s) may be excessive for deep cover pillar design. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the various methods and strategies by which panels, production pillars and barrier pillars are developed and extracted under deep cover, and to develop appropriate design guidelines. In the course of the research, 29 mines in 7 states were investigated to collect panel design case histories. At each mine site, underground geotechnical data were collected on the pillar line in order to document roof rock, coalbed and floor conditions. The analyses indicated that squeezes were the most likely failure mode where the depth was less than 1,250 ft, but bumps predominated in the deeper cover cases. Immediate roof rock quality, the ARMPS SF’s, and barrier pillar stability factors were all found to be important parameters in determining the outcomes of the case histories. Design guidelines, including suggestions for barrier pillars to isolate active panels from nearby gobs in bump prone ground, are also proposed.

New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines throughout the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above these mines. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10% false-alarm rate, the expected probability o detecting a miner's signal" from a depth of 1000 ft is 54% at 500 ft it is 95%. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 and 50%, respectively, of United States coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at depth of 1000 ft, the probability of detection will improve approximately 2% for each dB of increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a mining machine during maneuvers in the face area of an operating mine section. The system is the first step in the development of a guidance system for automated mining machines. The position and heading algorithm is described, and a preliminary error analysis is performed. The sensors employed were linear position transducers mounted on a mining machine with their cables attached to points on a stationary reference. Four linear position transducers were used to provide a data redundancy that increased the reliability of the guidance system. The linear position information obtained from the transducers was processed mathematically via the position and heading algorithm to provide the desired position and heading information. The algorithm takes advantage of sensor redundancy to continually test the accuracy of the sensor data. The major sources of error were determined to be the linear position transducers, the analog-to-digital (A/D) converter used to interpret the data, and the sampling frequency of the measurement system. These sources of error were evaluated to determine their inaccuracies for use in calculating the overall system accuracy.

This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

C. W. MERRILL*-Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably, a matter of vital interest.

Soviet precursors to Cunningham’s Kuz-Ram model from 1983 are described. They are rooted in the mean fragment size and Rosin-Rammler (RR) fits to sieving data and rely on approximations. Three versions of Kuz-Ram model are presented and all three are de facto based on the median fragment size x50, even if the term mean is used in the papers. This discrepancy caused Spathis in 2004 to suggest a correction procedure for the Kuz-Ram rock factor A, which was said to explain some of the missing fines in the model. This correction, while applicable to Cunningham’s 1983 paper, does not apply to his 1987 paper in which he presents his own A factor. Common fixes of the Kuz-Ram model’s fines issue are fragmentation models where the fines are mainly generated in a crushed zone around a blast hole. This is contradicted by careful model blasting tests. The lack of a largest block size in the RR function may lead to spurious values of the uniformity coefficient n, e.g. in conjunction with image based fragmentation measurements or crusher modeling. These issues may be solved by using the transformed RR function, which has a largest block size xmax or its replacement by the Swebrec function such as in the KCO model.

Jaguar Mining Inc. is implementing a 1.1 Mtpy, 7-year LOM gold project in the Iron Quadrangle (?Quadrilátero Ferrífero?), Brazil. Construction is on schedule and startup is programmed for Q2 2010. Mill feed grade averages 4.43 g/t and LOM gold production is estimated at 800,000 oz. The project entails two sulfide underground mines and three oxide/transition open pit mines. A state-of-the-art flotation/gravity concentration/CIP Plant has been designed based on testwork carried out by internationally recognized Canadian, U.S., and Brazilian laboratories. The mass recovery of the flotation section is only ca 10%, while its gold recovery is about 90%. Therefore, the CIP-ADR Plant will treat only 10% of the solids mass contained in the mill feed, while 90% will be fully cyanide-free material that will be partially used to feed a Backfill Plant. The leached tailings will be conveyed to a rather small tailings dam, whose 20- m3/h supernatant solution will be treated by a new electrolytic technology. The plant design contemplates a High Density Thickener for the cyanide-free rejects exceeding the backfill demand and a Regrinding Section before the Leaching Circuit. The estimated overall metallurgical recovery sits around 92%. This paper focus on the use of modern technologies to reduce costs, risks, and liabilities.

At some magical point, there is presumably some balance to be struck between legislation which is equitable and unambiguous on the one hand, and at the same time is efficiently complied with and administered. It is becoming increasingly clear that the legislation is not in balance, and that there is a pressing need for some simplification of the income tax rules and regulations especially in areas of critical importance to the resource industries-even though such simplification will likely involve some sacrifice of equity and certainty.Introduction""I would wish that ... the superfluous and tedious statutes were brought into one sum together, and made more plain and short, to the intent that men might better understand them."" Edward VI, King of England 1547-1553.Regal decree notwithstanding, the legislation of most developed nations continues to become more complex, lengthy, and confusing than ever before. Canada's income tax system cannot escape the accusatory finger pointing at examples of this serious problem which plagues all of us today.Although many areas of our tax law could easily warrant some degree of simplification, for those who are involved with this country's resource sector, that horrendous, almost unreadable, part of our tax legislation which deals with resource taxation must be regarded s a prime candidate for simplification. In recent decades, but particularly in the past ten years since tax reform in 1972, budget after budget, both federal and provincial, have amended, massaged, modified, and manipulated the resource tax rules to the point where not only are taxpayers totally lost in their attempts to make some sense of the entanglement of rules, but also the draftsmen themselves acknowledge that the outer limits of complexity are being reached, and that the whole set of rules is on the verge of grinding to a groaning halt under its own weight of nonsense and frustration."

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

"Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

In this paper it will be my endeavor to trace the development of the marine engine and its appurtenances, and the general progress that has taken place in marine engineering generally during the past fifteen years, rather with the object of attributing much of it to the successful efforts of the makers of iron and steel, thereby rendering my thanks to them for the valuable service they have contributed to my profession, than to recount what has been achieved by the skill, ability and perseverance of my colleagues in shipbuilding and engineering. The engineer has been at all times dependent on the ironmaster, and on more than one occasion his progress has been barred by the inability of the latter to overcome some obstacle to success in his manufacture. But on the other hand, it is equally true that the ironmaster has often been ahead of the engineer, and has been prepared, long beforehand, to supply that which would make a success for the marine engineer if he would avail himself of it.

THE use of the diamond-drill hole as a means of breaking clown ore and waste is not new. Years ago, the method was adopted in mines in northern Ontario and in the western United States to reach out to bad pillars, or to remnants of ore left on walls, the winning of which by any other method might be dangerous or too expensive. The practice is still in vogue and has generally proved a success. Of the known mineral deposits in Canada and elsewhere, many are of very low grade. Some are marginal and not even worthy of being classed as 'ore' until some means is found and proved of exploiting them economically. Other conditions being favourable, if a mining method could be found that would give a large 'bulk break' with a sufficiently low cost of development and a low cast of mining per ton, mineral deposits of this latter type might be brought into the classification of ore. We know that any block-craving system whereby the ore may be undercut and allowed to crush and cave will give a very high breakage and low costs. In some cases, however, the physical characteristics of the ore do not lend themselves to this method. In such ore-bodies, the alternative system of 'bulk-breaking' might be aided by long diamond-drill blast holes. We could obtain this 'bulk breaking' by the use of long diamond-drill holes in conjunction with a sub-level system using extremely thick benches, or possibly by the adaption of modified open-pit methods to underground mining. ln fact, if conditions are favourable, the idea would be simply ta open up a slot or free face and break into it on a larger scale with longer holes. The use of deeper benches-that is, using each level as a sub-level and thereby eliminating much development footage, slashing, setting up, and mucking time-would naturally be expected to lead to cheaper mining.

Introduction The last two or three decades have been marked by striking developments in methods of mining and tunnelling. In view .of increased competition and various economic factors, intensive ' mining has been largely practised, and no effort seems to have been spared to increase outputs and lower the cost of production. In metalliferous mining, the compressed-air rock-drill has effected marked savings in this direction, while in coal mining, the coal-cutting machine has revolutionized mining methods and materially contributed to economical working. Yet, for many years, little or no advance was made in methods of handling the rock, or coal, once it had been successfully broken. Loading by hand is, undoubtedly, the most laborious occupation in the whole of mining operations, and it is also the greatest single item that enters into the cost of production. In view of this, the lag of improved handling methods behind the process of winning the rock or coal is rather surprising. The point, however, was appreciated by mining men, and the introduction of various forms of conveyors and loaders is the result. The belt conveyor, the chain conveyor, the shaker conveyor, and the mechanical shovel entered various parts of the field, but it was left to scraping to provide a method of both conveying and loading. From the pure loading point of view, the choice lies between mechanical shovels and scraper loaders. While it is realised that each of these machines has applications peculiar to itself, yet it should be realised that much work which has hitherto been done by mechanical shovels can be done equally effectively with scraper loaders and at a considerable saving both from the point of view of initial outlay and upkeep.

A mine production locomotive, the world?s first applied industrial fuelcell vehicle, has been designed and tested in the context of a number of proof-of-concept projects supported by the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, an international consortium of stakeholders dedicated to facilitate the commercialization of fuelcell vehicles. The locomotive?s simple electric-powered motor and controller system was ideal to study a number of requirements related to fuelcell power application: hydrogen power plant operation, underground hydrogen use, risk and regulatory requirements, production performance versus the conventional battery-powered locomotive version under measured duty cycles and production requirements, power plant design improvements for other fuelcell vehicles, and cost-benefit aspects. This article will focus on the design and testing aspects of this project which has led to successful performance demonstrations of the vehicle under surface and underground conditions at two mines. It will also present information on the creation of a safe, reliable and efficient power plant which fulfilled its design objectives, including longer productivity time for a given vehicle fill-up.

LARGE-SCALE production of zirconium by the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Albany, Oreg., is an anomaly that justifies some explanation. The reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert atmosphere, as perfected by Dr. W. J. Kroll before 1940, aroused renewed interest in zirconium, and in 1945 development work on this metal was initiated at Albany under Dr. Kroll's technical direction. Preliminary results were promising, and in February 1947 a pilot plant with a weekly capacity of 60 pounds of zirconium-metal sponge was put in operation. Shortly thereafter the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission requested production of 1 ton of zirconium-metal sheet, with the provision that it have a low hafnium content. The Bureau of Mines was furnished with a. supply of Brazilian baddeleyite ore, containing less than 1 percent hafnium with respect to zirconium, from which was made about. 2,700 pounds of relatively low hafnium zirconium sheet of 0.080-inch thickness for test purposes. This was accomplished by melting zirconium sponge in a graphite crucible, hot-rolling the ingot in an iron sheath, and finishing by cold rolling. Concomitantly the Oak Ridge Laboratory developed a method for separating hafnium from zirconium; and, in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bureau of Ships of the Department of the Navy, a, larger pilot plant was erected to produce zirconium from very low hafnium zirconium tetrachloride furnished by the Commission. Pilot-plant work on producing zirconium tetrachloride from zircon sand and baddeleyite was discontinued. Production of zirconium sponge in the larger pilot plant of 500 pounds per week capacity was begun in June 1949.
