The objectives of mining grade control are presented and examples of the techniques used in various open pit and underground mines are used to define the attributes of good grade control. Reasons are discussed for the success of various improved practices. The progressive development of grade control is presented and the balance between quantitative and qualitative data is analysed. The skills and resources required for grade control on mine sites that are using best practice are also presented. A number of problems in grade control have been solved recently however there are still issues that need to be addressed. Examination of the grade control process frequently stops after sample quality has been examined. There is much more beyond this that can now be optimised using conditional simulation models. Other future directions of mining grade control are also suggested. An extensive bibliography of published papers on grade control is included that will be maintained and updated on a website.

"Long distance slurry pipeline systems have been successfully trans-porting steam coal, iron concentrates, copper concentrates and limestone for an aggregate of nearly 60 years and nearly three billion ton-miles annually. A phosphate concentrate pipeline is nearing start-up and systems for coking coal, lead/zinc concentrates and fly ash are planned. The solids pipeline concept, first patented in the early 1900's and commercialized in the 1950's, is now a proven technology providing an economic, environmentally pleasing and safe method for long distance bulk transport.The challenge for larger tonnage and longer distance movements of solids, for traversing increasingly rugged terrain in grass roots mineral developments, for transporting untried materials and for shipping more economic forms of proven materials still remains. This has necessitated continued refinements and optimization of the technology. The economic and environmental incentives for slurry pipelines when compared to other transport alternatives has justified substantial activity in this area. The scope of planned systems in coal, iron and other minerals is indicative of the firm place slurry pipelines will have in worldwide mineral development.In this presentation, the state-of-the-art in long distance slurry pipelines is reviewed with a focus on major systems of interest to the mineral processing industry. An overview of new developments in the application of this concept is presented, and finally, a projection of the future of pipelines in mineral development both worldwide and in Canada is discussed."

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

An extensive laboratory grinding study was carried out on a magnetite ore in order to assess the grinding behaviour of magnetic concentrate and tail from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS).The test work involved Bond ball mill testing, rod milling, low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), and batch ball milling down to product sizes of around P80~25 microns. A total of 18 Bond tests and over 150 batch grinding tests and sieve sizing were carried out. Throughout the grinding tests, power draw was continuously monitored. The relationship between the grinding energy and product size was analysed using the conventional energy-size concepts. It was found that the Rittinger equation fits the experimental data well. However, Bond?s equation does not fit the experimental data well, and therefore a modified Bond equation was developed. Differences in grinding properties between the magnetic and non-magnetic component were analysed and compared to the bulk ore. It was found that grinding properties differ significantly and therefore separate grinding test work may be required for each grinding step in the magnetite ore beneficiation flowsheet. "INTRODUCTION The United States, although the leading consumer of chromite, depends almost entirely on imports for its supply. For instance, the consumption during. 1941 amounted to 714,645 long tons, whereas the domestic chromite production, although the highest since 1918, was 12,731 long tons or only 1.78 percent of the domestic consumption. 9/ Domestic production was tremendously, accelerated,after 1941 by war demands; however, only a small proportion of this domestic product was of sufficient quality to be substituted for the high-grade imported chromite demanded for metallurgical purpose. Chromite is used largely for making ferrochromium, an alloy containing 60 to 70 percent chromium which is used in making alloy steels. Peacetime specification for ferrochromium required that it should contain 68 to 69 percent chromium. These specification were lowered to between 60 and 63 percent, chromium in 1941 to permit the use of lower-grade ores. The specifications for metallurgical chromite, used for making ferrochromium, were established first by the Metals Reserve Company at 48 percent Cr203 and a Cr. Fe. ratio of 3 : 1 but later were lowered to 45 percent Cr203 and a Cr : Fe ratio of 2.5 : 1. The ratio of chromium to iron in chromite is important, because the contained iron enters the alloy in making ferrochromium and, although an ore may contain the required 45 percent Cr203, it may contain too much to be suitable for ferrochromium production. The principal sources of domestic chromite are California, Oregon, Montana, and Alaska minor, small, and widely scattered deposits in another dozen States. Without exception, these deposits are low-grade, require beneficiation to produce a commercial product, and are not competitive with imported high-grade ore in normal times. Nevertheless, these deposits form strategic reserve, which must be utilized in periods of national emergency. Recognizing this fact; the Bureau of Mines for many years has undertaken investigations to develop methods of utilizing domestic chromite ores. The problem has been approached from three angles: (1) Mechanical methods of concentration; (2) beneficiation by chemical or metal¬lurgical methods; and (3) production of metallic chromium by electrolysis of solutions prepared from ore or concentrate."

The availability of renewable energy does not meet the demands of consumption. Hence, fossil fuels will continue to be an important energy source, and coal promises to cover the requirements for the coming decades. Because of its high energy content, deep lying bituminous coal and anthracite are important for energy generation. One trend in the future of coal mining is thin seam mining, because thick seams more and more have been exploited. A well-known and approved longwall mining method for thin seams is plowing which has big advantages compared to a shearer because of its compact design. The extraction of those thinner coal seams will become more and more important in coal industry and therefore the plow will receive more attention in future. Most approaches in longwall automation are focused on the shearer and need a more or less intelligent exploitation machine. Therefore those approaches cannot be used for the plow technology. The authors introduce a shield-data-based horizon control (SDHC). The developed approach integrates the shield data provided by the roof support and process monitoring into the horizon control process to keep the plow in seam even if the seam trend changes. This control concept can be used for the shearer as well as for the plow. The basic idea of SDHC for plow application will be introduced in this paper and first simulation results will be shown.

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale.The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 6·2.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions.As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased.The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.

The southwest Pacific has produced at least four of the world’s premier porphyry copper-gold deposits, and the current level of exploration is likely to produce even more. An appreciable amount of gold is being produced with this copper, with obvious economic advantages. Gold content, in addition to their large size, makes the southwest Pacific’s porphyrycopper-gold deposits very attractive exploration targets. The recognition of telescoping and overprinting of porphyry systems has produced a greater awareness of the likely surface expressions, in particular the significance of advanced argillic lithocaps in porphyry exploration. The recognition of the spatial and genetic association of porphyry copper and epithermal gold systems (Sillitoe, 1972), as in other parts of the world, has had important implications for exploration in the Asia Pacific region.

To improve SO2 emission compliance, pyrrhotite from Sudbury copper-nickel ores is being depressed with DETA. To understand the mechanism of depression, the role of complexing in controlling metal-ion activation of pyrrhotite was investigated. DETA was found to remove Cu and Ni ions but leave hydrophilic ferric species on the pyrrhotite surface. The metal:DETA ratio appeared to be 1:2. Cu was more readily removed than Ni, but the combination of DETA with sulphur dioxide was equally effective for both metal ions. Certain combinations of DETA, Ni ions, xanthate and dithionite (S2O4) or dithionate (S2O6), as representative derivatives of SO2 in water, produced hydrophilic precipitates. With the production increase of Oil Sand in Fort McMurray Alberta, more efficient tailings disposal has become a priority for Syncrude Canada Ltd. A lot of work on tailings research and development has been compiled to determine the most effective deposition to increase reclamation options, water re-use and thermal energy recovery. Efficient flocculation of fine oil sand tailings is the key technology for thickening. It was identified that flocculation of fine transition/marine ore tailings using a single flocculant was not effective. The thickener overflow contains 1-4% solids content compared with the target solids content of <0.5% obtained with Estuarine ore. As a result, novel processes for treatment of fine transition/marine ore tailings have been developed at Syncrude Bitumen Production Development since June 2004. While the conventional processes using a single flocculant, a single coagulation, or a coagulant-flocculant combination was ineffective for transition and marine ore tailings, the new processes including Coagulation-Flocculation-Coagulation (CFC), Flocculation-Coagulation (FC) and Flocculation-Coagulation-Flocculation (FCF) were acceptable options. The key components of these technologies consist of the recipe of chemicals and their adding sequence. With these technologies, almost all sub-micron clay minerals are aggregated together and settle as a whole, resulting in a clear supernatant of less than 0.1% solids.

For the deep foundation of podium and tower of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, BAUER (MALAYSIA) SDN. BHD. constructed 225 bored piles with diameter range of 2.0 to 2.5 m. In order to comply with the depth requirement of the design, for planning purposes and preparation for site, the drilling equipment was required to achieve a maximum drilling depth of 150 m. Actual piles constructed on site were deeper than 120 m. These dimensions caused superlative challenges which included but were not limited to; controlling the open hole stability over time with polymer, installing 70-ton heavy steel cages, pouring up to 550 m³ concrete continuously, in conjunction with installation of kingposts into workable, fresh concrete. The piling works were executed with a BG 72, the biggest drilling rig globally available, and the stringent verticality of the pile bore holes which required approval prior to cage installation. For verification of verticality, Bauer’s patented Drilling Inclination System was successfully used.

Traditional simulations of mineral processing circuits are solved by straightforward numerical techniques which require iteration to accommodate recirculating loads. Depending on the complexity of the simulated circuit, this solution technique can be inexact, computationally intensive, and potentially unstable. In this communication, an alternate calculation approach is presented, wherein an exact analytical solution is determined as a function of the individual units? separation probabilities. All the stream data, including recirculating loads, may be solved simultaneously, negating the need for iteration. Furthermore, with an analytical solution available, circuit analysis may then be utilized to diagnose the relative separation potential of the circuit. By integrating these tools, the authors have developed a software package for evaluating circuit configurations. This paper presents the theory, development, and limitations of the software?s methodology along with industrial examples which highlight the tool?s applicability to industrial circuits.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

Results of linear correlations of two to four variables by the least-squares method are presented. The variables include 63 parameters representing coal composition, coal plasticity, and coke strength. The composition parameters are on chemical analyses; the plasticity parameters, on three plastometer and dilatometer tests and four miscellaneous tests; and the coke-strength parameters, on three ASTM indices. Seventy-two to eighty-four plastic coals were used in the plasticity and carbonization tests, which together form the basis of this report; 43 nonplastic or weakly plastic coals were used in the coal-band studies. Plots of relations between volatile matter, carbon, and oxygen contents of 1,860 U.S. coals and the 84 coals used are shown. Similar plots between volatile matter and hydrogen or atomic H/C of the 84 coals are also included. Significances of regression coefficient signs for coal composition parameters in the significant correlations found are discussed. Based on these significances, the following relations are shown: (a) coke strength versus average aromaticity, or mineral matter content, of the parent coal; (b) characteristic temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers, the free-swelling index, or the Gray-King type versus average hydroaromaticity of the coal; and (c) nontemperature parameters of the plastometer and dilatometers versus the physical properties of a certain group of compounds from thermal decomposition of coal. Similarly, significances between the positions of coals in the coal band and the aforementioned relations are also discussed. A structural theory of coal plasticity is proposed. Applications of the correlation results are discussed. Composition parameters, such as carbon, atomic H/C, and calorific value may be used as a basis for selecting coking coals for stronger coke. Plasticity parameters, such as the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers and the free-swelling index, may be used for the same purpose. Based on the best correlations found, coke-strength indices may be estimated to within 4 to 8 units of the observed values; the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometer tests, 5° to 10° C.; and the free-swelling index, within 1 unit. Accuracies of all these estimated values are examined, based on the experimental errors of the data involved. Finally, estimations of plasticity parameters from one test with those from others are shown.

To determine the availability of manganese for metallurgical purposes from selected world resources, the Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential production of contained manganese in concentrates based on the demonstrated resources of 23 foreign and 8 domestic mines and deposits in 9 market economy countries. All but 2 of the 23 foreign deposits are operating mines; none of the domestic deposits are in operation. The demonstrated resources of the mines and deposits used in this study represent an in situ ore resource of approximately 2.2 billion tons," containing 780 million tons of manganese with a total recoverable production potential of 514 million tons of contained manganese in concentrates. The analyses of mines and deposits in this study indicate that about 213 million tons of the contained manganese (41 pct) is potentially available at a January 1981 constant dollar long-run total cost of up to $1.50 per long ton unit (22.4 lb, or 10.15 kg contained Mn), approximately 428 million tons (83 pet) is potentially available at a cost of about $1.75 or less, and 491 million tons (95 pet) is available at less than $3.30. The remaining 23 million tons, which is potentially available at much higher costs (about $8 to $35 per unit), represents the U.S. deposits. On an annual basis, with a cost range of up to $1.75 per long ton unit, the availability from currently operating mines would last at least 80 years based on 1980 world production data. Total manganese production costs are estimated to comprise mining-8 pet, beneficiation-3 pet, transportation-26 pet, and smelting-63 pet.

This paper highlights two aspects of the mineral sands industry in Australia: the development of the industry from approximately 1870 through to 1980, and the author’s experience in the industry from 1966 to date.The first real heavy mineral (HM) mining in Australia started in 1870 with the mining of heavy mineral slicks on the beaches along the east coast of Australia. The real potential of Australian heavy minerals was however only realised in the 1920s with the first production of a heavy mineral concentrate that was shipped to Canada for processing. Post WW 11 and the Korean War, Australia was the largest producer of mineral sands products in the world as well as a significant developer of associated separation equipment and technology. The number of producing companies in the east coast peaked at 33 in 1957, was reduced to ten by 1965, and subsequently further reduced to five in 1980 as a result of potential mining areas being declared National Parks or Conservation Reserves. Today there is one company, Unimin Australia Pty Ltd (formally Consolidated Rutile Ltd) operating on the east coast. In contrast there were three companies on the west coast in 1965, four companies in 1980, and four companies today (albeit not the same companies).There have been considerable ups and downs for the industry in Australia, however world wide it was renowned in the past as being an industry that attracted numerous interesting and innovative characters that played a major role in developing it into the vibrant industry that it is today. This, given the current climate, is predicted to continue into the future.The author has been continuously involved in the industry for over 45 years from 1966, initially as an electrician at Consolidated Rutile Ltd culminating in the role of General Manager/President of Iluka Resources Limited USA, prior to his retirement in 2009. His exposure has been world wide and has covered all aspects of the industry but in the main focused on project development and operational areas. During this time there have been significant technological advances, yet to some extent the basic principles have not changed at all. Some of the most noteworthy advances include the development of the Wright Spiral in 1977, the development of the Reading High Intensity Wet Magnet (WHIMS), the rare earth magnets, the CRL floating thickener and the improvement of analytical techniques. From a safety, health and environmental perspective there has been significant advances that the industry has much to be proud of. These include wetland restoration both in Australia and in the US, the restoration of farmland in Virginia and Capel, and the re-establishment of native species, for example at Eneabba and Richards Bay to name but a few.

This paper consolidates the key elements of seven contributions, on strategic long-term planning, to two of the three international conferences on Strategic versus Tactical approaches in Mining held over the period 2005?2008. The holistic concept of strategic long-term planning as developed and implemented at Anglo Platinum is described. Consideration is given to the planning cycle, principles supporting the construction of the long-term plan, and aspects of unique best practice as developed in Anglo Platinum. Further description of Anglo Platinum?s approach to corporate governance, including the processes, methodology, systems, unique tools and techniques that are applied to value and select capital investment options is also given.
