This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. 80122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available. Personnel involved in the investigation include J.R. Wait (Principal Investigator), D.A. Hill (Co-Principal Investigator), K.P. Spies, A.Q. Howard, and Lana Slusher (Administrative Assistant).

Can the United States mining industry achieve its long-stated goal of zero fatalities ? and what will it take to do so? Does it require new laws and regulations, as some propose, and a continuation of the commandand- control model that has been born out of more than 40 years of regulation and enforcement under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969? Or, is it time to consider a new model to manage safety and health and drive continuous, sustained improvement? These are questions that many are debating as mine safety performance, while improved, appears mired in a trough where improvement followed by declines seems to have become the rule rather than the exception. Without doubt, U.S. mines have made significant progress in safety performance during the last four decades, yet the stalled decline in fatality numbers, the industry?s report card of its success or failure, has led some to question whether the industry will achieve zero fatalities in U.S. mining by relying solely on the Mine Act?s framework and implementing its regulations. These are questions the CEO-led task force, set up by the National Mining Association (NMA), considered as it sought to identify impediments to zero fatalities posed by the current regulatory regime. Out of that effort came CORESafety, a common safety and health framework that relies on a management system approach to improve safety and health performance. The goal of CORESafety is to achieve zero fatalities and a 50-percent reduction in the rate of injuries in U.S. mining within five years ? 0:50:5. CORESafety is built on the plan-do-checkact model, which has been successfully deployed by industries, mining and nonmining alike, to drive continuous improvement in safety and health performance. The improvements in safety performance that can be achieved by shifting from a command-and-control regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the plando- check-act model have been documented in numerous industries. For example, the United Kingdom quarrying industry (Fig. 1), not satisfied with the number of reportable accidents being experienced 1995-2000, established a hard target of a 50-percent reduction in the number of reportable accidents during the period 2001- 2005. Having met this target, the industry then established a further target zero for the period 2006-2010. The mechanism to achieve these reductions? The plan-do-check-act model.

The Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) method introduces and mixes cementitious materials with in situ soils using hollow-stem rotating shafts equipped with a cutting tool at the tip and mixing paddles above the tip. CDSM generally produces a soil-cement panel consisting of three overlapping soil-cement columns. The soil-cement panel is then extended to form walls, which are effective for excavation support and groundwater control due to the continuity and low permeability of soil-cement walls. Two design approaches could be taken in the application of CDSM for excavation support: 1) single wall design and 2) gravity wall design. The former one is treated as a wall technology and the latter one is treated as a soil stabilization method. This paper will review the CDSM equipment and installation procedures for the construction of these two types of soil-cement walls. Four case examples are used to illustrate the design and application of these two types of soil-cement walls.

The deep-sea ocean floor offers a great potential for mineral resources. The evaluation of these resources is both time consuming and costly and require as any resource evaluation data; geodata. The collection of hard data, physical samples, is of course preferred because the associated uncertainty is low. However, the collection of soft data or image derived data can offer a valuable supplement. In this paper image derived nodule uncertain abundance data from an area in the Pacific is utilized. Implementing these uncertain data improves the estimation when the quality of the estimation is measured using the classification indicators like the kriging standard deviation, the relative prediction error, the slope of regression and the weight of the mean. It is concluded that uncertain data is better than no data. INTRODUCTION The deep-sea offers vast mineral resources (Cathles (2011), Hannington et al. (2011), Hannington (2013), Singer (2014)). A mineral resource can according to increasing geological confidence be classified as an inferred, an indicated or a measured resource. The classification is performed by a competent- or qualified person and is dependent on the amount, quality and characteristic of available geodata. The competent person must have at least five years of experience relevant to both the style of mineralisation, the type of deposit and the performed task. Typical examples of a “task” is for example resource estimation and classification or planning- and execution of exploration activities and presentations of the results. The competent person must also be a member or a fellow of a professional organisation and thereby be bound by reporting code (-s) that defines minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting.

Molybdenum resources around the world are mainly associated with porphyry copper ores. Molybdenite (MoS2) is the main Mo mineral that has rhenium in its crystal lattice. This paper investigates the recovery of rhenium and molybdenum from a molybdenite concentrate using a hydrometallurgical treatment method. The molybdenite concentrate is leached with nitric acid and subjected to solvent extraction to recover and separate rhenium and molybdenum from the leached liquor. The effects of pH and the chemicals? concentration on extraction characteristics of Mo and Re are investigated to define the best condition for selective extraction of these metals. The tested leached liquor contained of 8.2 g/L Mo, 1.5 g/L Fe, 0.5 g/L Cu and 60 ppm Re. A good extraction efficiency, up to 94%, was achieved for Re from the leached liquor, where the extraction of other metals, such as Fe and Cu, was negligible. In particular, at very low pH, rhenium is extracted selectively from solution, while the extraction of molybdenum is less than 10%. After removing rhenium, molybdenum was extracted with LIX984N. The selectivity of molybdenum extraction over other metals in solution was significant. Nearly 94% of molybdenum can be extracted from the solution at a pH value of -0.12, without any interference from other metal ions such as copper and iron.

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

The entire system is built around pre-designed and pre-engineered modules which are assembled to meet the metallurgical and production parameters of the project. The carbon vessels are the key to the flexibility of the system. The vessels are made of a coated mild steel, which allows the carbon vessels to be used in the adsorption, desorption and acid wash cycles. In the adsorption mode, the solution is pumped up-flow through four (4) vessels in series at 250 gpm fluidizing the carbon bed. When the carbon in the lead vessel is loaded, it is disconnected from the adsorption circuit via rubber hoses with quick-disconnect fittings. The second vessel is then made the lead vessel and a stripped carbon vessel is added to the end of the adsorption circuit.

The method used to assess the reactivity of lime was evaluated to gauge it usefulness as a quality control tool. The effect of particle sizes, different lime and water masses for a fixed s:l ratio and the same for various s:l ratios on the reactivity values obtained, were investigated. An attempt to introduce the amount of grit produced during the slaking reaction as an additional measure of limeís quality and reactivity, proved to be unsuccessful. It was also found that the relative amount of lime slaked during the different tests was independent of the reactivity value of the lime. The investigation confirmed the usefulness of the accepted test procedure as are liable method to measure the reactivity of lime, despite various reservations expressed from a theoretical point of view.

[Selenium and tellurium are rare elements in the earth's crust. Their scarcity and primary dependence of supply on copper and lead output are in consonance with the relatively small quantities consumed at 1964 level. "This paper summarizes diamond exploration techniques used in glaciated terrain, focussing on indicator mineral and geochemical methods applied to glacial sediments. Understanding the ice flow history, depositional history, and stratigraphy of glacial sediments is essential to successful sampling, interpretation and follow-up of indicator mineral and geochemical anomalies related to kimberlites. Kimberlite indicator minerals survive glacial transport over long distances and the relative abundance of each mineral in till is a function of the primary mineralogy of individual kimberlites. Indicator mineral distributions observed at a regional scale define the net effect of glacial dispersal, often along different ice flow directions. Local-scale distributions define individual dispersal trains. The medium sand (0.25 mm to 0.5 mm) fraction of heavy mineral concentrates, * GSC Contribution No. 2002028 prepared from glacial sediment samples, is best suited for indicator mineral surveys. The application of till geochemistry to diamond exploration is increasing because it is significantly cheaper than indicator mineral analysis and it can be performed quickly. The <0.063 mm (silt+clay) and 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm (coarse sand) fractions provide the best geochemical contrast between background and kimberlite-rich till. Kimberlite pathfinder elements that provide good contrast include Ni, Cr, Ba, Co, Sr, Rb, Nb, Mg, Ta, Ca, Fe, K, Ti and LREE, the relative importance of which will depend on kimberlite composition and that of the surrounding bedrock.IntroductionIn Canada, glacial erosion is the principal means by which kimberlite and its associated minerals have been dispersed, from a few tens of metres to tens of kilometres down-ice. Post-glacial weathering has had little impact on kimberlite debris in the glacial sediments, thus boulder tracing, indicator mineral methods and trace element geochemistry of the fine fraction of till (“drift prospecting” methods) can be used to detect kimberlite dispersal within areas covered by glacial sediment. This paper provides a summary of drift prospecting methods for kimberlite exploration in glaciated terrain, and includes examples of reconnaissance- , regional- and local-scale kimberlite indicator mineral and till geochemical distribution patterns.Weathered kimberlite is more susceptible to glacial erosion than the surrounding bedrock, thus many kimberlites in glaciated terrain are found in low or swampy ground, under small lakes, or covered by thin (< 1 m) to thick (>50 m) glacial sediments. Glacial erosion has removed varying amounts of the pre-glacially weathered kimberlite and, in some cases, the hard competent kimberlite below. For example, glacial erosion of the Peddie, McLean and Seed kimberlites near Lake Timiskaming, Ontario, removed pre-glacially weathered kimberlite, leaving a polished striated subcropping surface (McClenaghan et al., 1999a). In contrast, glacial erosion of the B30 kimberlite, near Kirkland Lake, Ontario (Fig.1), was much less vigorous and left a >10 m cap of soft and highly weathered dark green clay-rich kimberlite (McClenaghan et al., 1996). The thickness of remaining pre-glacially weathered kimberlite will influence the geophysical signature of the kimberlite."

The investigations recorded in this bulletin were conducted by the Pacific Coke & Coal Co. in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington. They cover one phase of a comprehensive investigation to determine whether coals from an extensive, undeveloped area of Pierce County, Wash., can be used in the manufacture of coke for the iron blast furnace. The completed investigation had three parts: (1) A geological survey of the coal property, (2) washing and crushing tests of the coals, and (3) coking and by-product tests. The geological survey, which was not conducted in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington, included systematic tracing of the coal beds by test holes throughout the property, except some portions covered by an impenetrable layer of glacial drift. By this means all of the beds were correlated, their thickness and general character were determined, and tonnage estimates were made. Only such parts of the survey results as are necessary to a full explanation of the investigations described herein are included in this bulletin.

Water recycle is an important part of the coal preparation process. This study was directed toward: (1) a survey of current practice and an evaluation of both the solid and liquid components of blackwater, (2) an experimental study of blackwater flocculation, and (3) a fundamental analysis of the flocculation process. The solids contained in the blackwater discharge to the fine refuse thickener of a coal preparation plant were found to contain, on average, 56% coal and 44% mineral matter. The mineral matter was largely illitic clay, while the water phase contained relatively large amounts of S04 and Ca++. Detailed studies were made of both natural and synthetic flocculants and the influence of polymer type and pH on the settling rate, turbidity of the supernatent liquid and sludge volume of the settled solids. More tundamental studies were made that clearly indicate the need for controlled mixing of polymer into the suspension to be flocculated, and the need to evaluate, more closely, the structure of the flocs formed during the process. Research recommendations are given.

Approximately 420 VertiMills« (VTM) have been installed in mineral processing plants throughout the world, mainly in tertiary and regrind applications plus several in secondary grinding duties. Metso Minerals (Metso) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) have commenced a collaborative research program in stirred milling technology focusing on mill performance evaluation, model development and scale-up methodology. Industrial VTMs are being assessed using a consistent circuit survey protocol to evaluate the performance of VTMs in comminution circuits. The survey protocol includes identification and modification of sampling points, appropriate sampling techniques, controlled circuit stability, and best sample analysis practice. To initiate this study four surveys were conducted in the tertiary grind circuit in the Ridgeway Concentrator at Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) that treats the full circuit throughput of over 800 tph. To deal with the high feed rate the site opted to lead the world in the application of stirred mills by installing the largest VTM, at 3000 hp (2240kW) in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone bank. On average the operating work index was 13.1 kWh/t, reducing the secondary grind product by 40 - 50 ¦m to the required 80 to 100 ¦m range. The applied specific energy is relatively low in these low-intensity stirred media mills at 2.7 kWh/t. The size specific energy was 24.2 kWh/t-75¦m. This report describes the work performed by Mine Research Company in developing a prototype mobile roof shield during 1971-1972 for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, along with background information leading to the design decisions adopted for the project. In addition, the report evaluates the choice of design and analysis and the results of the project in terms of future possibilities of mobile roof support systems. The report begins with the discussion of the problems of designing, building, and using mechanical and hydraulic roof support in coal mines. It then gives a historical summary of past work with discussions of the design choices made for previous roof support systems.

IT would doubtless have been felt by many but a few years back that there was little left to be said on the subject of crucible tool-steel, and that something akin to finality had been arrived at in its manufacture and general treatment. Probably such feeling was justifiable when it is remembered that the making of steel in crucibles is by far the oldest method known, dating back from time immemorial, it being indeed impossible to accurately trace its origin and earliest development; but it seems certain that carbon-steel was made and used thousands of years ago for cutting-tools. Proof of this may be seen by the marvelous carvings and workings on the intensely hard stone-work of the ancients, for it would be difficult to conceive by what means, other than with steel tools, such work could have been executed; and it is wonderful to contemplate that steel cutting-tools should have been used so long ago, whilst the principle of manufacturing them-that is, by fusion of iron and charcoal in crucibles-was then in a measure on the sane lines as we work on at the present day. Archaeologists have discovered that the Chinese made steel in crucibles long before the Christian era. " Wootz " steel fabricated in India centuries ago was crucible steel, as was also the celebrated Damascus steel, produced at the forges of Toledo, and, curiously, this latter steel furnishes&apos; yet another proof that "There is nothing new under the Sun," for it is recorded that Damascus steel contained certain percentages of tungsten, nickel, manganese, etc., some of the very elements, in fact, contained in the present modern high-speed steel, so that a latent high-speed steel may be said to have existed

To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior of the rockmass surrounding the underground mine excavation. The aim of this study was to investigate, at the threedimensional level, the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China. A three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software package to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in situ stress condition and by relying on the information available on lithology, geological structures, in situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities, and interfaces between different rocks. The authors also investigated the effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or equivalent continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, and stability around the tunnel. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses with appropriate geomechanical property values.

A new framework that collates and interprets pre-existing data to assess vulnerability and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise flood-related risk to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue has been developed. The æClimate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation ResultsÆ (CRATER) method tested at a coal mine in Queensland, provides semi-quantitative information to assist decision makers when designating investment for minimising vulnerability of mining operations to climate. Here we present the processes involved in this three-step approach that uses pre-existing spatial data of the mine site and local knowledge to build a set of visual tools to assist decision-making. The first step of the process is performing multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS) on ranked natural conditions at the mine, such as elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation, which is performed to identify critical flood areas. Secondly, a fault-tree analysis identifies how impact can occur and what options there are for impact reduction. Finally, a resource assessment of the mineÆs capacity to adapt reduces the adaptation options to those most suited to the mine. The results are confidential, but for the purpose of introducing the methodology, we present simplified results, particularly of steps 2 and 3. CRATER can also be used for future æwhat-ifÆ flooding scenarios to identify the most suitable locations for roads, buildings or other critical infrastructure. The methodology is transferable to any mine, series of mines or locations along the mining value chain that have sufficient data, providing a practical decision-making tool to identify æno-regretsÆ actions that not only could reduce downtime after or during an event, but in some cases may enhance production between extreme events. As metal prices fluctuated over the years, so too have the fortunes of many of those mining in Canada?s Yukon province. With a rich mining history that dates back to the Klondike gold rush of 1896 to 1898 and continues to thrive today, Yukon has experienced several ?boom-and-bust? cycles. However, during the world?s most recent mining ?bust? Yukon has held strong and has re-mained one of the world?s hottest destinations for mineral exploration. In fact, the area even exceeded forecasts in 2009, more than doubling last year. And the near-future looks just as bright.
