A process has been developed in the laboratory and expanded to semi-pilot-plant scale for recovering titania, iron, and byproducts from two types of titaniferous iron ores. A reducing roast with coke and soda ash followed by grinding and magnetic separation produced powdered iron and slag from which titania and byproducts were recovered by H2SO4 decomposition. Based on the steps tested on a. semi-pilot-plant scale supplemented by the results of the laboratory investigations, enough data are available to make a balanced flow sheet. Combined data from the laboratory and semi-pilot plant indicated that 85 to 9O percent of the titania content of the ore was recoverable and that approximately 90 percent of the iron could be recovered as a metallic-iron powder. Tahawus magnetite from the Maclntyre mine at Tahawus, N. Y., was successfully treated as follows: (1) The ore was roasted at 1,050° to 1,080° C. with carbon and soda ash, thereby reducing the iron to metal sponge and retaining the titania in the slag. (2) The metallic iron was separated, after wet grinding, by magnetic or gravity means. (3) The slag fraction was air-roasted at 850° C. and leached with NaOH to recover Na3VO4. (4) The leached solids received a dilute-H2SO4 leach to remove interfering impurities, chiefly Na2O and SiO2. (5) Titania was dissolved from the leached solids of step (4) by a H2SO4-bake followed by a water leach. (6) Titania was precipitated by seeding and boiling the resulting solution. The spent liquor was used for the dilute-H2SO4 leach in step (4). The following scheme was found to be technically feasible for recovering other byproducts of the process. (1) The gelled filtrate from the dilute-acid leach step was washed and dehydrated to produce a commercially acceptable silica gel. (2) The wash liquor containing sulfates of Na2O, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and TiO2 was combined with the highly alkaline filtrate from the wet-grind and metallic iron-separation steps, precipitating iron and titanium hydroxides, which were separated for special treatment. (3) Anhydrous Na2SO4 and Al2O3?3H2O were recoverable from the alkaline filtrate from step (2) by evaporation and carbonation, respectively, and the barren liquor was recycled to the magnetic-separation step.

"In cooperation with The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey was conducted in 1929 and 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. The territory served approximates 650 square miles and includes 46 cities and towns. The transmission and distribution systems are on overhead construction and underground wires and cables run in underground conduits and manholes. There are 17,000 manholes on the system, and also an area in Boston proper served by the Edison tube system. These conduits and manholes are laid in various types of streets from the most modern type of cement roadbed to the older type of loose macadam. The conditions as found could be considered as typical of any public utility in the electric-light and power field. The survey extended over a period of about a year beginning in June, 1929, and ending in July, 1930, and during this time 1,765 different manholes were tested and a total of 4,068 tests were made.Previous to starting the actual survey, one of the writers, G. W. Jones, spent considerable time in Boston determining the best methods of practical· test procedure. In this work cooperation was given by John Campbell, superintendent, special service department, who for a number of years has been making a study of explosions in underground street areas and preventive measures in Boston and various cities.After this preliminary investigation the tests were continued by employees of the Edisun Company. Copies of all records of tests were forwarded to the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station so that the writers were in close touch with the progress of the survey, and changes could be made in the test procedure whenever deemed necessary."

The optimization of metallurgical processes requires knowledge of the heterogeneity carried by constituents of interest. The common scenario, almost an industry standard, is to rely on the engineering firm who in turn relies on favorite manufacturers of sampling equipment to provide the appropriate sampling systems in the plant to perform accurate metallurgical accounting. This sequence is flawed from the beginning to the end because everything should be based on a careful understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS) by the company project team and their expert who invariably would suggest various approaches and different sampling systems.The necessary progressive and iterative approach should be that the company’s project team (mining or other industries) would do its home work to have a good understanding of the geometallurgy, mineralogy and texture of the ore in each geological unit so consultants and engineers would have the best information to start with. Then a reputable sampling expert would recommend which sampling systems are needed, so the company would require engineering firms to follow pre-established, non-negotiable requirements, and finally select the sampling equipment existing on the market today that is most likely to lead to accurate and precise enough metallurgical accounting.It is the author’s experience that when this necessary progressive and iterative approach is bypassed, sampling systems installed in the plant are likely to transgress the most elementary rules of sampling correctness. Invariably the argument is that the company cannot afford correct sampling systems for metallurgical accounting as suggested in the Theory of Sampling. There is nothing that is farther from the truth when later problems will develop and inevitable reconciliation difficulties with miners and geologists become daily routine with impossible answers; as a last resource the sampling expert may be called to perform a post-mortem analysis.The progressive and iterative approach suggested in this paper should be a due diligence requirement for any bank providing a loan for an important new mining project; anything less is most likely to generate unpleasant financial losses; historical, well-known examples are referred to.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2015. Results of a complex three-seam interaction analysis in a western U.S. coal mine are presented. The physical situation simulated by the models represents the development of a set of entries underneath two previously mined seams with all three seams in proximity to each other. The layout and the geometry of the remnant pillars in the upper seams were nonuniform and not always directly superimposed over each other, creating a very challenging modeling problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines' MULSIM/PC computer code was upgraded and enhanced to perform the required three-seam interaction calculations. Analysis was limited to simple linear-elastic assumptions as only peak stresses were required. Results clearly indicated that stress concentrations in the lower seam increased approximately 100 percent when compared to cases simulating no extraction in the two upper seams. These stress concentrations generally occurred in zones directly below points of highest abutment pressures in the upper seams. Overall, the model results compared favorably with actual documented observed behavior where roof failures were known to have occurred.

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.

After a number of years of engineering and operating assignments and through many types of evaluations, the need for a simple analytical method of evaluating mine haulage alternatives became obvious. Haulage, like 50 many other facets of mining, is generally a sequence of interconnected events that change, often drastically from mine to mine. Often the operator or the mine engineer has neither the time, manpower, facilities, or information needed to prepare a detailed evaluation. For many studies or for routine variance analysis, that detail may not be necessary. The intent of this article is to present an approach for analyzing mobile mine haulage that is simple and straight-forward. These methods are not designed to replace more formal and detailed procedures that have been developed previously and are available in our technical libraries. They are offered as a tool to be applied to preliminary designs, feasibility studies, and variance analyses where more complete detail is not warranted. These methods will eliminate combinations that are not economical or appropriate before more intensive and complete evaluations are undertaken. These methods may also be used to evaluate ongoing operations and to plan changes in those operations. This presentation describes a series of steps that have evolved for the handling of haulage evaluations. It concentrates on the factors having major impact on the results. Because the approach is a sequence of distinct steps, a case study was chosen as the best method of presentation. This case is a composite of several actual situations that have been encountered within the last few years.

This paper describing mining practice at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on mining method, and practice in the various mining districts in the United States. At present (1929) practically all the mineral production in the Morenci district is from the Humboldt mine of the Morenci Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation. The mining method used is adapted to the type of ore body being exploited; it has been developed by adopting methods used elsewhere and making necessary changes to fit local conditions. Improvements in current practices are still being made.

The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

"The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. [Recent investigations at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City indicate that metallurgists have given little attention to the occurrence of jarosite minerals in the oxidized ores of lead and silver. These investigations have also emphasized the importance of lowing when these minerals occur in the oxidized ores, especially those containing lead, silver, and gold, as their presence is a material factor in selecting a suitable kind of treatment. Since the question of the occurrence of jarosites in oxidized ores has come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, investigation has indicated that plumbojarosite and argentojarosite are quite common. These two minerals appear to be widely distributed and probably escaped recognition by persons who had attempted to treat certain oxidized lead ores in which the jarosite minerals represented a material portion of the metal content. Consideration of the physical characteristics of the jarosites also indicates that in many cases failure to treat some of the oxidized lead ores with success has been directly due to the fact that the greater portion of their lead and silver content was present as plumbojarosite and argentojarosite. The data and the description of these minerals given in the body of this paper indicate that attempts to recover lead and silver from ores in which appreciable amounts of too metals occur is plumbojarosite and. argentojarosite would be unsuccessful if confined to gravity methods of concentration. There are undoubtedly considerable tonnage of oxidize lead ores in the various mining regions of this and other countries, and it is quite probable tat in some of these ores the metal content of lead and silver may be largely anglesite (lead sulphate) and cerussite (lead carbonate) but that they will also contain cerargyrite (silver chloride), argentojarosite, and plumbojarosite. An important element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the development and evaluation of reliable coal interface detection (CID) systems. Commercially available CID sensors based on natural gamma radiation (NGR) are only applicable if the immediate roof is composed of shaley material. The USBM has made numerous underground and laboratory measurements using several NGR systems approved for installation on mining machines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. In addition, two small handheld NGR instruments were used to make comparative measurements. Underground NGR measurements in 10 different coal seams, potassium-uranium-thorium radiometric analyses on samples from 16 seams, and chemical analyses of coal and rock for correlation with NGR counts were made. Laboratory test results on the effect of air gap and sample thickness, size, and weight on the NGR measurements, as well as general results of the various NGR systems, are discussed.

In safety work a study of past accidents is of value in determining means of reducing future accidents of the same character. This is particularly true with reference to coal-mine explosions. Data from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and from published reports of the State inspector of coal mines of Colorado are presented in this circular in the belief that they will be of value to operators by indicating methods of preventing future coal-mine explosions. The tables included are complete only with regard to major disasters. The Bureau of Mines considers as a major disaster one in which five 'or more men are killed. However, this circular also includes a considerable number of minor disasters, Various explosions in the coal mines of Colorado from 1883 to 1932, inclusive, are listed with information available as to their probable cause, number of men killed and measures which, if they had been in use at that time, might have prevented them. John McNeil, first Colorado State coal-mine inspector, on page 43 of his first report for the period ended July 31, 1884, made the following recommendations for the prevention of explosions in the coal industry: True causes could be traced either to insufficient ventilation, carelessness and lack of rigid discipline in carrying on energetic ventilation and other precautions needed to be enforced in a mine giving off explosive gases. *** When any quantity of fine coal dust is observed in an entry, air course, or room it should be made damp and be removed from the mine, and thus beep every place as free from dust as possible. *** A system of bratticing close up to the face of each and every place in the mine from crosscut last made (whether gas should just then show its presence or not) which should not be more than 50 or 75 feet according to the nature of the mine.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

"The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automation control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool.A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the “wish list” of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight by uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made.This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content."

"The objective of this research is to study the quality of blast-furnace iron ore pellets with binary basicity 1 fired on a pilot scale using the two main firing processes that are presently in use in the world and comparing them. Currently, the great majority of pellet producers use the traveling grate process because of its higher production capacity. In this study, the physical and chemical qualities of the pellet feed, limestone, anthracite and bentonite were determined and the amount of additives for a blast furnace pellet with the defined basicity was calculated. The physical properties of the green and dried pellets were determined accordingly. Produced pellets, after being fired on a pilot scale using traveling grate and grate kiln, were subjected to chemical analysis and physical testing. No significant difference was observed in the metallurgical quality — that is, reducibility index (RI), reducing disintegration index (RDI) and swelling index (SWI) — of the pellets produced by both processes. However, a comparison of cold physical tests — tumble and cold compression strength — shows improved quality of the pellets fired using the grate kiln process.IntroductionThe development of human civilization owes much to iron and steel (Sun et al., 2015). Iron is the most used metal in the world, and it is the main component of steel, which is present in materials for structural engineering, automotive and general industrial applications (Liu et al., 2014). Increased global demand has led to a decrease in the resources of ore with high iron content (Zhang et al., 2015), and currently 95 percent of the iron ore in China needs processing before smelting as its iron (Fe) content is only about 30 percent on average (Liu et al., 2014).Pelletizing is a process to economically agglomerate iron ore pellet feed into pellet form. After balling, green pellets are conveyed to the final step of the manufacturing process (Pena, 1982). The process is a multifaceted one, involving high temperatures, air flow gas turbulence and complex equipment geometry (Larsson et al., 2009). The pellets are fed into blast furnaces, which are now predominantly used in the extraction of iron. Ore processing also requires physical separation, including crushing, grinding and water removal (Sun et al., 2015).The increase in steel consumption favors the exploitation of low-concentration ores and the production of pellets (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Pellet quality is affected by various factors, such as their physical and chemical characteristics and their temperatures and residence times in the furnace (Halt, Silva and Kawatra, 2015). This report discusses the configuration and system deployment for the postdisaster surface seismic system for detecting and locating trapped miners. It analyzes the results of 15 field tests to define a signal model, background noise levels, and subarray performance. A waveform modeling procedure is described and compared with observed waveforms. The resulting similarity indicates that the major factors affecting the signal amplitude, waveform, and spectral character are understood. A model is presented which gives the sig-nal amplitude as a function of source type, source depth, and horizontal off-set between source and receiver. Using this model a curve is presented which gives the range at which a signal will be detected for different signal and noise levels. Finally, and most important relative to the mission of the system, the ability of the system to detect signals on one or more subarrays is put into a probabilistic framework. For a strong source it is almost certain that a subarray directly over the source will detect the signal. After signal processing, it is highly likely that signals will be detected on sufficient subarrays to locate the trapped miner. Location errors have been found to be less than 100 ft in the majority of cases. Techniques have been used that can reduce the location errors to this level even when soil layer variation between subarrays is severe.

In two decades Turkey has emerged from the debacle of the Ottoman Empire to become one of the most modern nations in the Middle East. The numerous achievements of this period were remarkable in that they affected human and social, as well as economic, fields. Most of this progress was achieved by Turkey's unaided efforts and the utilization of domestic resources; however, since 1948 various United States aid programs3/ have made significant contributions to increased agricultural and industrial output. Turkey's singleness of purpose in favor of a strong, independent, and prosperous republic has evoked universal admiration and encouraged the hope of stability in the Middle East. Much of the development of the Turkish economy to date has been fostered by the State; however, with growing strength the leaders in 1950 considered the time appro¬priate to relax the nationalistic economic policy and permit private enterprise to play a larger role in increasing domestic output and raising the tempo of industrialization. In pursuance! Of this policy, laws encouraging investment of foreign capital in Turkey and others stimulating development of mining and petroleum enterprises were enacted in 1954. This new legislation, plus the cooperative attitude of the Turkish Government, have encouraged wide interest in the mineral resources of the country.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Cyprus Shoshone Coal Corp. conducted a study of deformation mechanisms in strata around a longwall gate road system at two sites in an underground coal mine near Ham, WY. Of particular interest was timedependent (on the order of several months) roof deformation. Strata above and below the coal seam are very weak, carbonaceous mudstones that have cohesionless planes of weakness oriented along bedding, which dips approximately 8° to 16° at N 49° E. An extensive array of instrumented roof bolts, roof extensometers, and biaxial stressmeters were installed during development mining at these two sites under variable depth of cover [I83 to 335 m (600 to 1,100 ft)], seam dip (10° to 16°), and top coal thickness [estimated to be 0.30 to 0.61 m (1 to 2 ft) on the downdip side of the entry]. Bolt load and roof deformation histories during the entry development periods were compared. Bolt loads at site 2 were less than those at site 1, which is consistent with the amount of overburden. Deformation magnitudes at site 2 were similar to those at site 1, but deformation rates were approximately 44% greater and nearly constant over time, whereas the deformation rates at site 1 decreased exponentially over time. Also, most deformation occurred above the bolt horizon at site two, but extensometer measurements at site 1 showed that a significant amount of deformation occurred within the bolt horizon. The most significant factor that influenced bolt tension and timedependent strata deformation was strength and Young's modulus of the strata. Finite-difference models support this conclusion.
