THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

"Crushing and grinding of ores and their beneficiation by washing away gangue minerals has been practiced since ancient times. Primitive crushing was done by hand pounding the ore with a hard stone then by using metallic hammers. The mortar and pestle was mechanized using a lever and when the size of operations increased in the middle ages, the stamp mill was introduced. The grindstone played an important role in grinding of ores. Panning for gold and hand sorting of minerals were two old methods of separation, now gave way to modern techniques. Flotation started in the middle of the nineteenth century by using oils to collect the mineral particles and float them on the surface of the aqueous slurry. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that organic compounds were affective floating agents. Textbooks written by distinguished engineers such as Rittinger, Rickard, Pryor, Taggart, Richards, Gaudin, and others contributed to the recognition of this field as a new discipline to be taught in Universities. INTRODUCTIONThe ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals (Figure 1). Another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. The present day Georgia was known in ancient times as Colchis and was a center for gold working. It was known to the ancient Greek as the land of Golden Fleece. The use of special cloth to catch gold particles was also described by Agricola in his 1555 book De Re Metallica (Figure 2)."

Under an approved remining program, mine operators can remine abandoned coal mines without assuming legal responsibility for treatment of the previously degraded water, as long as the discharging waters are not further degraded and other regulatory requirements are satisfied. A U.S. Bureau of Mines review of 105 remining permits in Pennsylvania indicates that remining results in substantial reclamation of abandoned mine lands, utilization of significant quantities of coal, and reduction of contaminant loads (acidity and iron) from degraded mine drainage discharges. Normality tests performed on the water quality and flow data indicate generally nonnormal distributions and extreme right-skewness, tending toward lower values. The water quality of underground coal mines was observed to be more highly degraded in terms of acidity, iron, and sulfate than that of surface coal mines. The optimum baseline sampling scenario is 12 months in duration at a frequency of one sample per month. Analysis of water quality and flow rates before and after remining indicates that a majority of the mines exhibited either no change or a significant decrease in pollution rate because of remining. The discharge flow rate was the dominant controlling factor when the post-remining contaminant load was significantly better or worse than the baseline (pre-remining) load.

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data. Thunderbird is part of the Integrated Mining Systems (IMS) alliance. IMS offers the mining industry the most comprehensive line of monitoring and navigation products available today for mobile mine equipment. In addition to Thunderbird’s drill monitors and GPS systems, the product line includes: Fleet Management Systems for trucks and loaders; dragline and shovel monitors; GPS based navigation systems for shovels, dozers and other mobile equipment; and surveying systems. IMS uses common communication systems, operating systems, and hardware components in order to provide a truly Integrated Mining System.

"Before the war, the United States was the world’s leading consumer of tin, the industrial applications of which had become widespread. Domestic production was negligible, and requirements were met almost entirely by imports, principally from British Malaya, United Kingdom and China. Average annual imports for the years 1925-1929 amounted to 78,009 long tons.With the advent of war in Europe and signing of the Japanese-German pact, it was realized that foreign sources of supplies were threatened, and steps were taken by Congress to forestall critical shortages of tin and other minerals. These steps in regard to tin included stock-piling, improving reclamation and conservation, increasing South American production, constructing a smelter in the United States for treatment of tin, ores, and intensifying the search for domestic tin deposits. Annual imports were raised to 140,873 long tons by 1941. On 1945, annual imports had shrunk to 37,675 long tons and consumption had been reduced to 52,100 tons of primary and secondary tin but not tin content of scrap alloy.The Strategic Minerals Act, passed by the Congress in 1939, authorized the investigation of domestic tin deposits.As Alaska had supplied virtually all of the domestic output of tin, an investigation of Alaska deposits was undertaken in 1940 and 1941 by J. B. Mertie, Jr., and Robert R. Coats of the Geological Survey.The Lost River lode tin mine on the Seward Peninsula was examined by H. E. Heide of the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Possibilities for developing a significant amount of tin appeared favorable, and exploration of the ore bodies was started in August 1942."

The identification of potential accidents on construction sites has been a major concern in the construction industry and it needs a proactive safety plan to reduce the risk of accidents. There are no efficient methods for checking if safety measures are taken properly on construction sites. Consequently, workers on site are not given enough awareness about dangerous areas. In addition, construction sites are dynamic and on-site situations are changing in terms of permanent and temporary structures and facilities. This information can be represented using Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper proposes the integration of BIM and safety risk analysis by considering the risk levels associated with the work spaces of different construction tasks. Work spaces are generated in a BIM model according to the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) of the project, reference objects in the BIM, and the schedule and resources of the task. Each work space is assigned to one or more tasks or functions, e.g., work spaces for specific tasks, shared spaces (paths), storage spaces, or spaces prohibited to workers. The assignment of work spaces is based on the workers, equipment and materials involved in the task. All the work spaces are associated with a specific duration according to the schedule of the project. Then risk evaluation of the construction site is applied in order to evaluate safety risks based on their severity and the degree of exposure of workers. For example, work spaces for storing hazard materials and for heavy construction equipment have higher risks than other work spaces. The results of the risk evaluation can be visualized in a 4D BIM model.

This marks the 100th year that the aggregate industry has been served by a national association. Of all the accomplishments this longstanding relationship has achieved, there is probably none greater than the progress made, in worker safety. Perhaps the best way to measure this success is to examine injury trends in the aggregate miner population. For example, in the first half of the 20th [ ] century, 16 quarry mining disasters (a "disaster" is an incident with five or more fatalities) claimed 157 miners between 1909 and 1952. The largest of these was the disaster at the Sandts Eddy Limestone Quarry near Allentown, Pa., on March 26, 1942, where 31 miners died of asphyxiation by fumes/explosion. Thankfully, no mining disasters have occurred in the aggregate industry since 1952. It is these kinds of information that help us characterize improvements in aggregate worker safety over the last 100 years.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in the interest of the prevention of injuries and fatalities in coal mines, has engaged in a study of the circumstances and conditions under which falls of roof and coal contribute to coal-mine accidents, and this publication is devoted to the result of a study conducted in mince developed in the Pittsburgh or No. 8 coal in eastern Ohio.To emphasize the need of this study a statement of the fatalities which have resulted from falls of roof is presented, followed by a brief description of the field and its geology. The mining methods, regulations, and timbering practices are presented and discuss, as well as supervision and discipline, all of which are important factors in the control of the roof and the prevention of falls of roof material that are liable to result in injury to the underground workmen.During the five-year period, 1924 to 1928, there were 10,820 fatalities in the cool mines of the United States, of which number 5,573 or 51.5 per cent resulted from fells of roof material, such as draw slate or roof coal, and of coal from the fact or sides. These fatalities generally occur singly, consequently they are given little publicity compared with major disasters consulting from explosions which, during the same five-year period, amounted to only 17.8 per cent of the total fatalities.Seven,mines in eastern Ohio, each typical, of mines in its locality, have been carefully studied, and the result of this study is herein presented so the information may be and beneficial to all who may be operating mines having,similar natural or physical conditions.In general, it will be found that measures taken to prevent injuries or fatalities from falls of roof as well as other safety measures, will have the effect of increasing the efficiency and economy in mining operation. The result of the study so far made on the falls of roof problem indicates that such features as mine management, supervision, inspection, discipline, character of roof, timbering methods, and blasting have a direct bearing on any scheme that may be evolved to prevent injury or loss of life by falls of roof."

Mineral aggregate, the most widely used mineral resource globally, has attracted little academic or public interest. Of all mining developments, the aggregate resource is seldom factored into resource management decisions. This lack of recognition to the strategic aggregate resource has significant economic, environmental, and social implications. Impact to the economics, the environment, and the community coincide with the key elements of the United Nations concept of ?sustainable development?. To build on the concept, the mining sector contracted the International Institute for Environment and Development to assess how mining activity contributes to sustainability. As a result, a useful assessment process was developed by the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Task Group entitled ?Seven Questions to Sustainability: How to Assess the Contribution of Mining and Mineral Activities.? In Alberta, recent opposition to mineral resource development by community residents offers an opportunity to employ the MMSD?s assessment procedure. The public opposition to the mining activity was addressed through a stakeholder planning process initiated by the municipal council of Sturgeon County, Alberta. As a result the Calahoo/Villeneuve Area Structure Plan (CASP) was formulated and adopted. To measure the effectiveness of the CASP planning process in terms of sustainability, this paper applies the MMSD?s Seven Question assessment to the Calahoo/Villeneuve Area Structure Plan.

The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been utilised in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years. The technology was recently identified as having potential value in iron ore, where latent bound moisture may affect ore handling even after dewatering and extraction. The first step in introducing this technology to iron ore involved laboratory tests on drill core samples. These results established the parameters for a downhole borehole magnetic resonance (BMR) tool for iron-rich environments, which was subsequently developed. A major challenge involved shrinking what is a very large tool in the oil industry to a slimhole, lightweight, 1-man deployable mining tool.Of primary concern was the ability to measure the very fast transverse relaxation times (T2s) seen in the lab results on iron ore samples. Iron creates local field gradients that significantly decrease the T2 times. As a result, the BMR tool had to be able to measure T2s in the range of hundreds of microseconds, a level not required in clastic sedimentary formations. The choice of T2 cut-offs in iron ore is critical to successfully separating the free and bound fluids. The industry has typically focused on T2 cut-offs in clastics and carbonates, but not in systems with high iron content. Using core analysis results (poro-perm and NMR) we were able to verify the BMR response. The T2 cut-offs were determined from NMR core analysis and then applied to the logs so as to provide a continuous, calibrated permeability log.Field results that highlight the challenge involved in logging in iron-rich environments are presented, as well as some minimum requirements for a successful BMR log. Examples from boreholes in an active iron ore mine in the Pilbara iron ore province in Western Australia are presented, as well as explanations for how NMR data can be combined with bulk density logs to provide a continuous dry weight density log based on the original density-porosity equation from Alger et al (1963).CITATION:Hopper, T A J, Trofimczyk, K K and Birt, B J, 2017. In blasting large tonnages of ore or material, the economy of the operation 'depends mainly on the mine manager's judgment in placing the holes to the best possible advantage and in determining the most effective size of hole to suit the conditions and requirements.The placing of holes is often looked upon as a problem involving so many uncertain factors that the application of simple mathematics is impossible. The uncertain factors arise when dealing with strata of different character, in hardness toughness and resistance to shearing.A study of the practice at many mines where all types of strata from hard ore to relatively soft overburden, and even coal, is being mined, suggests that the problem is not as complex as generally believed. There is, without doubt, some uniformity in the amount of burden given to holes of equivalent dimensions, regardless of the material being mined. The reason is simple. With too great a burden hard rock will not break out and soft rock will "bull". The nature of the strata is taken care of by the strength, quantity and distribution of the explosive charge and, to some extent, the spacing of the holes.It is because burdens are uniform in all classes of strata met with in mining, that a formula can be used to design blast hole layouts.The formula introduced in this paper is empirical as it is based on prevailing practice. It has been tested and proved remarkably accurate against every example available to the writer. Many thousands of blast holes, at many different mines, are represented by the examples given in the attached tables; to give further examples would only mean, unnecessary repetition. Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. Quality assurance and quality control (or QAQC) plays a key role in safeguarding the level of confidence of the data generated during mineral exploration and mine development, and is also part of the reporting code requirements for resource estimation and reporting, as well as mining investment. Implementation of good policies and working protocols in quality management will result in the generation of reliable information, which is critical for decision-making on the future of the mining project. The use of certified reference materials, i.e., standard, blank, and duplicate samples, proves effective and efficient for ensuring the level of data confidence in terms of precision, accuracy, and sample contamination. This is well demonstrated by the practice of QC in the exploration programme for the chrysotile tailings storage facilities of Havelock Mine, using 1254 samples from 53 drill-holes. Different statistical tools were applied to analyse the assay results from these samples. The outcome substantiates that the QC practice established during the Havelock exploration project is aligned to best practice guidelines in the industry. The resource delineated indicates that the tailings material at Havelock could potentially become a significant source of supply to the global magnesium market.

There are two distinct coal fields in Kentucky-the Eastern field constituting a part of the Appalachian coal region and the Western field constituting the southern part of the Eastern Interior region. The outcrop pattern of the State is dominated by the Cincinnati arch. Coal-bearing Pennsylvanian strata occupy a low structural position on either flank, preserved thereby from erosion, which in the past has removed these same beds, though a much thinner succession, from the crest of the arch. General geological relationships are shown in figures 1 and 2. On April 13, 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker discovered the first coal recorded in Kentucky. He entered the State through Cumberland Gap (Cave Gap) and found coal a few miles north.

"There are signs that the commodity downturn that has battered the mining industry for the past five years is beginning to ease up. As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

The North Shore Connector (NSC) project will extend the Allegheny County Port Authority?s Light Rail Transit System from downtown Pittsburgh below the Allegheny River to the North Shore via twin bore tunnels. Jet grouting, diaphragm walls, and soil mixing were selected as cost-effective technically viable ground improvement and support of excavation techniques. Jet grouting was specified to provide break-out (egress) and break-in (ingress) block sections at the tunnel boring machine (TBM) launching and receiving pits. Jet grout treatment was also used adjacent to buildings with shallow foundations and below retaining walls along the tunnel alignment. A new method for measuring jet grout column diameter based on electrical resistivity was employed on the project. New equipment was introduced in the U.S for constructing soil mix temporary support of excavation using a soil-mix technique termed Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) due to the use of two vertical cutting wheels that have evolved from diaphragm wall trench cutter technology. The system allows for continuous water tight soil mix panel construction including steel beams. This paper highlights some applications of jet grouting and various support of excavation systems (e.g. slurry walls, cement bentonite walls and CSM walls), including new innovative techniques (e.g. Cyljet and CSM) used under the constraints of an urban environment.

"With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. However, injuries involving a part of the body being struck by, or caught between, during bolting and drilling occurred with relatively high frequency (Burgess and Steiner, 2007).Roof drilling and bolt installation is labor-intensive and repetitive. These labor-intensive and repetitive requirements can lead to cumulative trauma. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin, 1998).In South Africa, the majority of the roof bolting machines used are “man-in-position” style machines (Fig. 1). This puts the operator in close proximity to where the drilling and bolting process is performed. When proper operation procedures are followed, it has been proven to be a very effective, productive and safe system. The MSHA-certified automatic temporary roof support (ATRS), canopies and dust collection system of Fletcher bolters all provide the operator with unparalleled protection. However, there are some occupational hazards inherent to the zone located next to the drilling and bolting zone. This has led some customers to request relocating the operator away from this zone. The idea being that the operators will no longer be located in the face area, greatly reducing their exposure to dust, noise, machine and geological hazards."
