In addition to developing various types of coal interface detection systems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is actively involved in developing a coal rib thickness monitoring system for high wall mining applications. One particular system that appears to show promise uses a ground-penetrating radar system to detect the coal-air boundaries of coal ribs. Based on preliminary laboratory and field tests, results indicate that this method can be applied successfully in highwall mines to maintain a constant rib thickness. The coal seam should be relatively clean in the vicinity of the antenna (e.g., have minimal partings or dirt bands) for best results.

The Mogalakwena North Concentrator of Anglo Platinum Operations was built with the capability to allow for future projected expansion. Several research groups, currently working with Anglo American on collaborative research over a range of projects, were brought in to review the existing operation, with a view to releasing some specific bottlenecks and providing specialist design input to the potential plant expansion.Based on a thorough review of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and crushing circuit, a wide range of de-bottlenecking opportunities were identified. This was followed by a series of surveys to provide performance measurements and to model the circuit in detail. From this effort a full simulation of the plant has been developed, including updated models of the HPGR, crusher, bins and screens. These models have been implemented in the researchersÆ Model Development Kit (MDK) version of JKSimMet, and in a prototype dynamic simulator based on the Matlab Simulink software.The observations, measurements and simulations have provided guidance and quantified the benefits of some proposed circuit modifications. Based on these findings a number of upgrades are being planned, with the aim of ensuring full utilisation of the installed equipment. "IntroductionRecognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries, Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs.To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made throughout the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous research studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984).The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of flake and high-crystalline natural graphite from 4 domestic and 25 foreign mines and deposits in 11 market economy countries (MEC's). Demonstrated resources were estimated to be 95 million metric tons (Mmt) containing 5.61 Mmt of recoverable flake and high-crystalline graphite products. Fifty-five percent (3.17 Mmt) of the total recovered product is estimated to comprise plus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake pro-ducts and "lump" and "chip" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite A" in this study; 45 pct (2.44 Mmt) of the total is minus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake products and "dust" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite B." Total production costs, including all costs needed over the life of each operation, were determined at a 0-and 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) for both graphite A and graphite B products. For a 15-pct DCFROR, 1.74 Mmt (54.9 pct) of the graphite A products is available at $600/mt or less and 2.13 Mmt (67.2 pct) is available for $800/mt or less. For the same DCFROR, 1.08 Mmt (44.3 pct) of the graphite B is available at $200/mt or less, and 1.71 Mmt (70 pct) is available at $325/mt or less. No domestic resources were determined to be economic at present prices. A sensitivity analysis of the relative economics of the Alabama graphite deposits under various operational parameters is presented in an appendix. All evaluations are in January 1984 dollars.

The purpose of this study was to examine the problems of underground coal mining in the United States, and to develop recommendations for an integrated Research and Development Program aimed at resolving these problems. Specific objectives of the study were as follows: ? To identify the existing inadequacies that have adverse effect on Health, Safety, External Environment, and Productivity. ? To identify opportunities for technological advance s to correct these inadequacies. ? To develop an integrated Research and Development Program designed to accomplish the advances identified. Many of the recommended tasks are dearly long range; this is especially true of those for study of future mining systems. However, funding recommendations in this Report are presented for a 5 -year period, since the developments accomplished during this period will undoubtedly be a factor in the formulation of the follow on tasks. Where applicable, the recommended Research and :Development could include development and test of pilot model equipment.

Strategic alignment throughout a mining organization is critical to effective strategic execution and good business performance. The alignment of strategic goals and objectives in the different operations and functions in a large global operation is a challenge facing executive management in light of legacy organizational structure and processes. An additional confounding factor in strategic alignment of acquisition and new project expansion is that mining projects and operations are frequently multi-cultural in terms of country origin as well as organizational culture. This brings together many cultures to accomplish the project or complete an acquisition (Financial Times, 2006). The mining industry presents numerous challenges to executives and mine management by the nature of the operation and organizational processes used in running it. For example, there seems to be an inherent conflict between the individual goals of the components that constitute a mineral processing operation (the mine, the mill, the smelter and the refinery), and lowest cost production of the final product. Managers of these component operations have specific objectives passed down from the corporate executives. Those site managers tend to be compensated based on throughput and perform to this main metric. This tendency to maximize throughput for an individual operation can contradict the general process flow of a best-fit solution to producing the final product at the lowest cost. In an effort to become more aligned, firms are increasingly using balanced scorecard derivatives at great cost and effort (whether internally or externally sourced) in an attempt to help with strategic alignment. Balanced score-cards have been effective in providing a good strategic scorecard to companies with some measure of strategic alignment. Many firms make this effort of using balanced scorecards. However, most firms are not strategically aligned or, at best, are sub-optimized, in terms of strategic alignment (Kaplan and Norton, 2006). The tendency in mining operations is to focus on operating individual components as optimally as possible and stretching existing assets to the best possible production rates. ?Making tons? is the common operational focus. Numerous factors underpin this focus and can affect the ability of the operation?s ability to align properly with the corporate strategy and strategic goals. Critical factors are legacy organizational structure, culture, processes and performance measurement systems. Changing anyone of these factors to affect better strategic alignment requires significant attention to managing change.

Although near-term prospects are poor for recycling most present wastes, urban refuse is an important exception. Such wastes comprise a mine above ground, and much less processing energy is normally required to recycle the constituents of urban ore than to obtain them in equal amounts from natural raw materials.

An increasing part of the world's needs will be supplied by manufactured diamond, which was introduced commercially by General Electric Co. in 1957. Use of diamond for glass cutting roes bark several centuries, mid diamond drilling of rock became important to the mining industry M the 1870's. Today, diamond drilling is the most extensively used method of exploring the world's ore reserves; diamond drills two also used to determined the nature of bedrock below the foundations of buildings, dams, and bridges. Diamond drill bits are now used extensively in the petroleum industry, and replacement or steel rock bits with diamond drill bits in hard rock formations has affected substantial savings.]

In a consideration of the various means whereby more economical and more efficient use may be made of the fuels in the United States, the possibility of obtaining for the production of illuminating gas other and cheaper fuels than the Pennsylvania coals demands attention. For the Government, as well as for private corporations and the householder, there can be no more economical and efficient way of using some coals than through the medium of illuminating gas. In the stove, gas reduces the labor cost of heat production and lessens the drudgery of the kitchen; burned in the Welsbach mantle, it is an excellent and cheap illuminant. In addition, the coke that remains after the gas has been recovered furnishes a smokeless fuel that has about the same heating value as anthracite. Hence any investigations that will indicate how local coals through proper treatment may be substituted for the higher priced and rapidly vanishing Pennsylvania gas coals will bring about lower prices for both gas and coke and will also aid to conserve for use in metallurgical processes the coking coals of Pennsylvania and of ot,her States. The annual drain on the gas-coal resources of this country and the importance of the gas and coke industries are indicated by the fact that 8,390,129 tons of coal were carbonized in retorts in the United States in 1909. The resulting salable products from by-product ovens were 15,791,220,000 cubic feet of coal gas, 6,254,644 tons of coke, and 60,126,000 gallons of tar. The total value of all by-products was about $28,508,637.

That the maintenance of proper air conditions is a most important factor in the control of occupational hazards is shown by the large amount of material presented each year through the technical journal's on the effects on workers of injurious dusts, gases, and variations in temperature and humidity.. SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

WHEN THE BUREAU OF MINES was created in 1910, the organic act had as one of its main provisions the following: That it shall be the province of said bureau and its director, under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior, to make diligent investigation of the methods of mining, especially in relation to the safely of miners and the appliances best adapted to prevent accidents, the possible improvement of renditions under which mining operations are carried on, the treatment of ores and other mineral substances, the use of explosives and electricity, the prevention of accidents, and other inquiries and technologic investigations pertinent to said industries, and from tinge to time make such public reports of the work, investigations, and information obtained as the Secretary of said department may direct, with the recommendations of such bureau. The nationwide nature of the health and safety work of the Bureau of Mines has given its representatives an opportunity to study and report on matters pertaining to health and safety in mines and related operations from the time the Bureau was established to the present. Regular annual reports and numerous additional papers and reports have been published each year to place on record and to make available the information gathered. While the basic purpose of this bulletin is to describe health and safety reports for the period January 1947 through June 1955, a selected number of earlier publica¬tions that are believed pertinent for reference purposes are included.

Her talk contained a lot of fresh ideas, and practical versus theoretical concepts.”Talk about values, not economicsPraise was unanimous for Poulton, who gave a thought-provoking talk on “The New Face of Mining: The Culture Change for Compatible Mining.” Corporate social responsibility has been embraced by the metals mining industry, and it’s being done right, she said. “So why do we have more conflict? Why are there more protests? Why does permitting take longer and longer?” Poulton made a case for an approach based on compatible, rather than sustainable, mining to present a new face of mining that can be compatible with communities, cultures and the environment, and still be profitable. When the mining industry starts to talk about compatibility between what it is doing and what “me,” as the consumer, wants, what “we,” as citizens of a community, want, and what’s good for the “world,” we’re going to see the next culture change happen, she concluded."

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a research and development project sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe containment for disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is currently being developed 2150 feet below the surface, in a thick salt bed which will serve as the disposal medium. Provision of a proper ventilation system at the WIPP Project is a major priority of those responsible for its design, management, and operations. As an ongoing effort towards this goal, it was decided to simulate the mine's ventilation system using Dravo's MINEVENT computer program. Specifically, the work included the development of the following simulation models: 1. Simulation of the current ventilation system 2. Simulation of the designed ventilation system for the following modes: o Mine Construction mode/shift o Waste storage mode/shift o Fire or exhaust filtration mode These computer models are useful in solving complex ventilation problems likely to be encountered in an R&D project, like WIPP. They are particularly helpful for the development of contingency plans to incorporate during emergency situations, such as fires, fan stop- pages, radiation leaks, etc. Also, they can be utilized when considering expanding certain underground areas to ensure the availability of adequate ventilation.

This study was conducted to provide experimental evidence on the effect of modifications of gasoline front-end composition on the photochemical specific reactivities of automotive emissions. Evaporative and evaporative-plus-exhaust emissions from an automobile operated with four fuels of different volatility and varying levels of C.-C5 olefins were irradiated in a 10040 environmental chamber at three sets of initial hydrocarbon-nitrogen oxides concentrations. Reactivity was measured and expressed in terms of rate-of-NO2 formation and dosages of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. The compositional changes that were necessary in reducing fuel volatility were found to have no significant effect on the reactivity of the emissions. However, replacing C4-C5 olefins with saturated components resulted in sharp decreases in all reactivity manifestations observed for the evaporative emission samples. A lesser influence (of C4-C5 olefin replacement) was found with the composite exhaust-plus-evaporative samples; the effect that was observed could be attributed to the evaporative emission portion of the sample. The data therefore suggest that saturation of front-end fuel olefins had no large effect on exhaust emission reactivity.

WISH to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphhrets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chi¬cago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crude argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. Current practices in electrolytic winning and refining of copper , nickel and zinc are reviewed from the point of view of their respective energy requirements. The electrical energy requirements of these processes are broken down in to the individual components, which belong to two basic categories: (a) thermodynamic energy requirements (G of the desired reaction) : (b) energy losses (anode and cathode polarizations, ohmic drops in the electrolyte and in the cell hardware, energy losses due to unwanted side reactions and electrical shorts). The individual energy components are separately examined for each electrolytic process and the potential for energy saving in these processes is discussed. It is shown that many potential energy-saving measures are uneconomical at the present time, as they increase over-all operating costs. The discussion is focused on those approaches which hold most promise for the future.

On installing the Metso Superior MK 54x75? primary gyratory crusher in Nkomati mine the crusher experienced severe power spikes greater than 1000kW which subsequently led to the crusher tripping under load while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ores. Likewise significant losses in throughput were also experienced while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ore types. Interestingly the crusher was capable of processing the PCMZ ores without experiencing any power spikes or losses in throughput. Investigations into the challenges faced by the crusher while processing Nkomati?s MMZ ores were conducted using the DEM model in conjunction with the fast breakage model present in Metso?s High Fidelity Simulator. The intentions of the study were to establish the most suitable operating conditions or cavity design that would potentially enhance the performance of the crusher. Likewise an understanding of the effects the feed conditions (size distribution and hardness) had on the crusher?s performance was established. Ore characterization tests were conducted on Nkomati?sPyroxenite, Diabase, Calc silicate and quartzite ores which were from Nkomati?s MMZ ore body. The ore characterization tests conducted were drop weight tests, slow compression tests and elastic modulus tests. Four simulations were conducted used the existing cavity design with various open side settings (OSS) and throws. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s operating conditions on its performance. Four additional simulations were conducted on two cavity designs with reduced volumes. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s cavity design on the crusher?s performance. Thus through the simulations a better understandings of the impact of the crusher design, operating conditions and feed conditions on the crushers performance. Furthermore an analysis of the crusher?s performance was made which was used as a basis for comparisons with the base case simulation. "INTRODUCTION The Edison mine comprises workings on two irregular spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes which outcrop near the town of Keystone in the southern portion of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Edison mine as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the Second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the then small productive capacity of the industry.During the course of the project, the Bureau of Mines completed 13 diamond core-drill holes, aggregating 2,114.5 feet of drilling. Twenty-six cannel samples were taken from the main Edison shaft, and 13 miscellaneous samples were obtained to permit analysis of the efficiency of phases of mining and sorting operations. Metallurgical tests were made by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the feasibility of beneficiating spodumere-bearing ores from the Edison mine. 3/"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Indiana cooperated with AMAX Coal Co. and its consultants to determine the effects of coal mine overburden blasting on nearby pipelines. Five pressurized 76-m pipeline sections were installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN, for testing to failure. Four 17-to 51-cm-diameter welded steel pipes and one 22-cm PVC pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the test pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale, close-in blasting for construction, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 950 kg per delay in 31-cm blastholes. Analyses found low pipe responses, strains, and calculated stresses from even large blasts. Ground vibrations of 120 to 250 mm/s produced worst case strains that were about 25 pct of the strains resulting from normal pipeline operations and calculated stresses of only about 10 to 18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No pressurization failures or permanent strains occurred even at vibration amplitudes of 600 mm/s.
