Site-specific blast vibration prediction can be more accurate than using a universal prediction equation. Vibrations from 37 blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly, inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations predicted from US Bureau of Mines (USBM) equations. Vibration restrictions based on USBM studies could then be too conservative or too lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases, energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations. This paper deals with concentration of hematitic-limonitic iron ores. The ore sample obtained from Karakuz (Turkey) contain:. about 40-46 I Fe. First, a low intensity magnetic separation process was employed to separate the strongly magnetic particles cf "-10+2 mm" and "-2+0.075 mm" size fractions and magnetic concentrates with 59.1 % Fe aid % 58.0 Fe were obtained respectively. The non-magnetics of both fractions were then fed to a nigh intensity permanent magnetic separator. The Fe contents of "-10+2 nun" and "2+0.075 mm" size fractions were increased from 28.2 to 51.13 and from 35.4 7. to 43.25 respectively after single pass. Easing on these results, it was concluded that the high intensity permanent magnetic separator could he used as a pre-concentrator f.7.1- hematitic-limonitic Karakuz iron ore.

"Equity Silver Mines Limited, Canada's largest silver mine, has designed, built and operated a leach plant to reduce the levels of antimony and arsenic in its silver-gold-copper flotation concentrate. The orebody contained deleterious antimony and arsenic minerals in such proportions that the economic long-term sales contracts necessary to obtain project financing could not be procured. Construction of the leach plant therefore allowed development of the mine to proceed. Although the plant took some time to reach design throughput and product specifications, due to the complex and unique nature of the operation, these goals were successfully met and surpassed. This paper describes the physical plant and/or process technology modifications made to mold the main processes-concentrate leaching and filtering, autoclaving and filtration of by-products, and crystallization of salt cake-into an effective, economic operation.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited, a member of the Placer Development Group, owns and operates an open-pit silver mine and related facilities located 37 kilometres southeast of Houston in north-central British Columbia. The mine occupies a 44 I-hectare (1089 acre) site at an elevation of 1300 metres (4265 feet) on the Nechako Plateau. Producing a copper concentrate containing high values of silver and gold, it is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the largest in the western world. Equity stresses open communications, positive motivation, and production with safety, and achieved the best mine safety record in western Canada in 1984."

Bituminous coal mining in the United States is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth which began in the early 1960's. Future demands are conservatively predicted to rise to 700 million tons by 1980 and to anywhere between 1 to 3 billion tons by the turn of the century. This means a continuous expansion of coal production by a factor of at least two can be expected before the end of the century. Over the last few years, production from underground mining has decreased; yet it is about 50% of the total coal output. In the absence of any discovery of near surface coal deposits, and even after conceding that some deeper deposits can be surface mined with changes in technology it can be reasonably assumed that coal production from underground will continue to play an important part in solving the energy crisis.

This paper is the second of a series of progress reports on a study, of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States. There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value. One ,of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although Several manganese minerals acre readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.§. Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 900°C converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution. Introduction of smelter gases containing as much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulphate.

"Explosives used in blasting operations, natural and anthropogenic sources such as septic systems,fertilizers, and decomposing vegetation can potentially contaminate groundwater with nitrate in thevicinity of construction sites and make identification of blasting impacts difficult. Blasting operationsfor a private construction project in Windham, New Hampshire were indicated as the source of water quality impacts to private drinking water wells prompting the New Hampshire Department ofTransportation (NHDOT) to implement a proactive approach to limit the potential for impacts fromblasting for ongoing NHDOT projects. NHDOT has developed a baseline drinking water monitoringprogram designed to detect potential impacts and to ensure alternative drinking water is providedthroughout the construction phase of projects. In 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) andNHDOT began a study to determine the source and fate of nitrogen compounds near blasting sites using a combination of isotopic, time series, geochemical, hydrologic, and geologic data. Approximately 1.75 million cubic yards (1.33 cubic meters) of rock were removed by blasting in several locations for roadway construction at a major highway construction site in southern New Hampshire."

Zeolites were first recognized as a new group of minerals by Cronstedt with the discovery of stilbite in 1756. The word zeolite was coined from the two Greek words meaning "to boil" and "a stone" because of the loss of water when heated in the mineralogist's blowpipe (Breck, 1974). In 1845 it was discovered that certain soils lave the power of retaining ammonium salts Way, 1850). These were the first ion exchange experiments. Later it was discovered that it was the hydrated silicates in the soil that produced this phenomenon. Several years later a paper was published dealing with the action of dilute salt solutions on silicates which showed that this base-exchange principle, which we now call cation exchange, is reversible. The quantitative cation exchange behavior of zeolite minerals, such as chabazite, was studied. As a result any aluminosilicate which exhibited the property of ion exchange was referred to as a "zeolite," even today the term has been applied to clay minerals as well as synthetic organic ion exchange resins.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Case-based reasoning can be a catalyst for improvement). A new computer software technology known as Case Based Reasoning (CBR) can be used to produce small decision support systems that are economically viable. This is because the knowledge that they contain can be owned and maintained by their users. A CBR tool has been used to perform a pilot study with Anglesey Aluminium Metal Ltd. The results are encouraging. They suggest that a combination of CBR and participative design and implementation techniques (such as Checkland's Soft System Methodology) can achieve sustainable improvement in mineral processing functions. An explanation is presented of why traditional, rule based systems are often an ineffective way to implement support systems. It is shown that CBR may provide an appropriate technology solution. Methods of achieving sustainable benefit are indicated. The pilot study with Anglesey Aluminium Metal is used as a practical illustration of the development of a CBR application. A review of potential application areas and some observations about the implementation are presented

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1945 resulted in the discovery of 23 new fields; one Miocene, eight Frio, three Cockfield-Yegua and eleven along the Wilcox trend. The Wilcox trend appears to he the most active at this time. Producing depths of the new Wilcox discoveries range from 2050 to 10,050 ft. Drilling along the Frio trend has been, for the greater part, projected to the deeper downdip sands. Eighteen of the new discoveries are classified as oil or condensate and five are gas discoveries.

A theoretical model based on DFN models and 2D DEM numerical modelling has been developed for evaluating the rock mass mechanical properties. The description of the methodology is non-site related and can be applied in any site for this type of characterisation. The methodology was developed in the frame of the Site Investigation programmes for a Deep Repository for spent fuel in Sweden, and validated on sets of data coming from the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory. Un modèle théorique base sur des modèles probabilistiques de réseaux de fractures et sur un modèle numérique DEM 2D a été développé dans le but de déterminer les propriétés mécaniques de la masse rocheuse. La méthodologie développée peut être appliquée à tout type de site pour ce genre de caractérisation. Le modèle a été élaboré dans le cadre des programmes de recherche d’un site d’enfouissement des déchets nucléaires en Suède, et validé par une application au laboratoire de recherche souterrain à Äspö. Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

The evident need to improve the reliability of fluid power systems in underground coal mining equipment prompted the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and later the Department of Energy, to contract with the Fluid Power Research Center at Oklahoma State University for a research project to develop methods for achieving this end. Since the work of the contract was completed at about the time DOE was relinquishing its underground coal mining projects to BOM it was decided to issue the final report under 80M cover. The contract revealed that the major causes of poor reliability were: (1) poor overall system design, (2) poor component contamination toleranace, (3) poor system filtration, and 4) poor maintenance practices stemming from a lack of defined maintenance procedures and enforcement of same. This report demonstrates the variability of the reliabilities of components of similar performance description when subjected to standard tests. Improved design procedures are recommended and the information needed to specify and select components whose reliability is predictable and optimum without sacrifice in performance or significant increase in envelope size.

The cost of corrosion as measured by such cost components as the renovation or replacement of coated steel, or the use of expensive coating systems on steel, is considerable. Extrapolating from figures for the USA would place the overall cost of corrosion for South Africa as a figure of the order of magnitude of something over 1% of the GNP. This is a sizeable amount, of which costs associated with atmospheric corrosion would be a significant proportion. The corrosivity of an atmosphere can be defined as the ability of the atmosphere to cause corrosion in a given metal or alloy (International Standards Organization [1]). The ISO Standard 9223 specifies the key factors in the atmospheric corrosion of metals and alloys, and defines categories of corrosivity on the basis of these factors. Prior to the publication of that ISO standard, Callaghan published the results of his twenty-year exposure programme and his excellent corrosivity map of Southern Africa [2]. The present author published updates of the corrosivity map in 1999 [3] and again in 2003 [4]. The summary of the individual areas of corrosivity around Southern Africa was published in the latter paper, and is reproduced here as the following TABLE 1. Of significance in TABLE 1 are the numerous regions of very high corrosivity (C5 or beyond), particularly the rural West Coast shoreline, the North East Coast (KZN) shoreline, and the coastal cities Cape Town, Durban and Richards Bay. The corrosivity map as published is obviously based on much extrapolation as only a small number of points have been measured. During the past three years further measurements have been made, mostly however at the same sites in order to give greater reliability and to monitor long-term trends with changes in pollution. These two aspects are incorporated in this update. There has become available a greater amount of air pollution data for centres in South Africa than was the case some years ago. In this present paper the pollution data are used to extrapolate the corrosivity over areas where little or no direct corrosivity measurement has been made. This methodology is described in ISO 9223.
