Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the principal component of natural gas. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane, and underground coal mines must ensure that methane released into the mine during coal extraction does not build to dangerous levels. This is accomplished in part through the use of large-volume ventilation systems that remove methane from the mine and release it to the atmosphere. Although the methane concentration exhausted is quite low (typically <1 percent), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is so great that they actually constitute the largest source of methane emissions from underground coal mines. Each year underground coal mines throughout the world emit more than 500 billion cubic feet of methane from their ventilation systems. An air pollution control technology, thermal oxidation using a flow-reversal reactor (TFRR), has emerged as a potential solution to ventilation air methane (VAM) emission mitigation. One manufacturer of TFRRs has demonstrated its oxidizer design (the VOCSIDIZER?) at coal mines in the United Kingdom and Australia. These demonstrations tested the technology?s effectiveness at oxidizing low-concentration methane, as well as its ability to tap the excess heat to produce steam for electric power generation. In early 2007, the first U.S. demonstration of this technology began operation at an abandoned mine in West Virginia. The project is designed to prove the technology?s operational robustness, its ability to reliably oxidize methane at concentrations typical of mine exhausts, and its safety. If the technology is employed at active underground coal mines, it offers the potential to mitigate substantial quantities of global methane emissions. This paper discusses global VAM emissions, options for the recovery and utilization of VAM, and existing projects such as WestVAMP in Australia and the ongoing U.S. VAM demonstration project.

"AbstractHigh strain dynamic pile tests (HSDPT) on driven piles have been carried out on a routine basis in Sweden for more than 30 years. The Swedish Commission on Pile research established, in the early 1980s, safety factors based on the percentage of piles tested. The safety factors could then be reduced, creating economic incentives for the contractor to carry out testing.Energy formulas adopted by our neighbour countries, Norway and Denmark, were not accepted in Sweden as a reliable method since the dynamic testing method was considered to be a more scientific and reliable method. It has become almost the only in-situ method used to verify geotechnical bearing capacity on driven piles.The typical Swedish geology of soft soils overlaying very hard strata makes it possible to verify high design loads, typically 20 kN per cm2 of pile cross sectional area for steel piles and 1,5 kN per cm2 for concrete piles.Conventionally a certain percentage of the piles have been tested in Sweden. The EC7, on the other hand states a number of piles to be tested, regardless of the total number of piles. The Swedish NA (National Annex) states a maximum distance between tested piles, which results in better distribution of the test piles over the foundation.For shaft-bearing piles in soft clays, dynamic pile tests have to be correlated by static load tests.Historical backgroundOn a research basis stress-wave measurements have been carried out for a long time in Sweden. One example is a project in the city of Gothenburg, conducted by Fellenius and Pejrud (1964). Strain gauges were glued on the reinforcement bars in 60 m long, precast concrete piles at 3 m and 25 m above the pile tip respectively. Evaluation was done with different methods such as dynamic formulas,stress-wave measurements and in addition compared with static load tests.In the 1975 Building Code in Sweden, driving criteria for concrete piles based on stress-wave theory were introduced, as summarized in Table 1. The driving criteria are intended for 3 and 4 tonne gravity hammers. For hydraulic rigs, which have free-falling hammers, the drop height indicated should be reduced to 80 % of the values in the table. The criteria were considered to include a safety factor of 3,0. For 330 - 450 kN pile load, pile with a standard a cross sectional area of 235 mm x 235 mm was used. For 600 kN load, the standard cross sectional area was 275 mm x 275 mm."

Phosphorous segregated at grain boundaries during solidification and heat treatment dramatically decreases low temperature toughness of precipitation hardened Fe-Mn-Al-C austenitic steel. A thermodynamic analysis was performed to evaluate the possibility of decreasing P and subsequent segregation by Ca- and Ce-additives in the melt. It was shown that the predicted probability of forming a P containing compounds depends on melt composition and treatment sequence. Experimental heats were performed and several micro- and macro-structural effects of Ca- and Ce-additives were recognized by using an automated inclusion analysis technique.

An environmental monitoring program was established to assess the baseline of parameters which may be impacted by a research and development hydraulic borehole mining operation. During the baseline program, two aquifers were identified at the borehole site with the overlying sand aquifer being distinct from the ore sand aquifer on the basis of radiological parameters. The direction of flow of groundwater was determined to be north 19° west at a rate of 1.82 feet per year. Tests to determine the effect of backfilling the boreholes indicated that using overburden from the open pit mining operation would not significantly increase the radiological consti¬tuents of the ore sand aquifer. Mining measurements of the- radon flux from the borehole indicated that the actual release rate of 0.035 pCi/sec was several orders of magnitude less than the calculated estimate by the Environmental Protection Agency. Finally, a gamma survey conducted at the site indicated that the terrestrial component of background radiation was consistent with that in areas near uranium deposits. The methodology used as well as the supporting data are given in this report.

STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office-workers at the mine or plant site. Injury and employment data at metal mines and metallurgical plants in the United States for 1960 are shown under the following general sections: 1. Periodic dilute sulphuric acid treatment ofstill, batch-fed, molassesenriched, microaerobic, manganese-dioxide-Ieaching microbial cultures led to marked improvements over untreated cultures. Percentage Mn++ recoveries increased (7X), rate of Mn++ formation improved (3X) and yields of Mn++ per molasses use were more economical (5 X). The yield in terms of molasses used improved with decreasing sugar used (eg 1.17 g Mn++/gram molasses at 0.2 per cent molasses (w/v) feed and 24 per cent (w/v) pulp density MnO2 tailings). The most effective Mn++ leaching in terms ofpercentage recovery (97 per cent) and rate ofleaching (46 mg Mn++/day) was at 0.5 per cent molasses (w/v) and 14 per cent pulp density (w/v) MnO2 tailings.

The method of Substance Flow Analysis (SFA) provides a helpful tool for the study of the industrial metabolism of a certain metal within a regional level, such as copper, lead etc. In this paper the flows and inventory of cobalt in China, 2008, were traced with the STAF model, and the situations of production, fabrication and manufacturing, use and waste management in China were introduced. The result revealed that the resource of cobalt in China was so poor that a large amount of cobalt material or cobalt products needed to be imported, and there was lack of recycling of cobalt resources.0

The number of railroad coal cars (open top hoppers), dominated rail car orders and deliveries in 1975 according to announcements made February 11, by the Association of American Railroads and the American Railway Car Institute. Acting to keep ahead of increased coal production, the railroads installed 21,748 new coal cars in 1975, the most since 1957. The 1975 installation resulted in a net increase of 6,560 coal cars and an overall gain of 4.5 percent in the total capacity of the hopper car fleet. With most of the new coal cars going into unit train service --where car utilization is greatest --the railroads actual coal-carrying capacity was increased far more than 4.5 percent. The AAR estimated that unit train operations now move 50 percent of all rail-hauled coal compared to only 42 percent 2 years ago. COBALT - The Societe Miniere de Tenke Fungurume (SMTF) copper-cobalt project in Zaire reportedly was suspended in January for an indefenite length of time. According to officials, the deferment resulted from a number of adverse factors, one of which was exceptional increases in capital costs. The project was scheduled for completion in early 1978, with an eventual production of 14.3 million pounds of cobalt per year. Reserves of cobalt were reported to be 505 million pounds. SMTF is a consortium and includes American, British, French, Japanese, and Zairian interests.

The Kwaggashoek East pit is one of the four production areas of Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine. The Kwaggashoek East Open pit mines through the abandoned sublevel caving operations of the Kwaggashoek East underground workings. A risk assessment indicated that the primary risk is the occurrence of surface subsidence. Based on local knowledge, a hypothesis, that most of the cavities were filled with broken rock as a result of roof collapse and bulking of failed material was formulated. To test the hypothesis a number of geophysical methods as well as probe drilling was utilized. The results of the resistivity, gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys were inconclusive in determining the position of voids. Either there were no voids present or the resolution of the surveys was not high enough to pick it up. It is accepted that only small voids remained, and that the supported roof hypothesis is valid. As a precautionary measure all the production blast holes within the caving area were over-drilled by forty percent. This would collapse the roof of any small voids or tunnels immediately below the block. This operation proved to be successful as two of the three underground levels have been mined out with no subsidence occurring in the pit floor.

The Kemess Mine tailings impoundment is retained behind an earthfill and rockfill dam that, when complete, will measure about 140 m in height with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Due to weak foundation conditions, the dam must be raised at a very flat downstream slope approaching 7H:1V. This requires an enormous volume of fill to construct the downstream shell of the dam, which has a low permeability clayey till core and is raised via the centerline construction method. For the initial years of annual dam raising, from 1996 through 2002, the downstream shell of the dam was constructed with non acid generating waste rock from the open pit, 7 km distant and requiring an uphill haul with obvious cost implications. To reduce costs, and to reduce waste haulage constraints on mining schedules, feasibility studies were initiated for raising of the downstream shell using cycloned tailings sand as opposed to open pit waste. This required inclusion of flotation cells for removal of residual sulphides from the tailings to produce the non acid generating product mandated for the downstream shell of the dam. These studies were positive, and cycloned sand construction was initiated in December of 2002. This paper describes the experience gained with cycloned sand construction for the dam. Unique aspects include environmental controls given the sulphide-bearing ores, preparation of the existing shell of the dam for subsequent placement of hydraulically placed cycloned tailings sand, on-dam settling ponds, water management issues, reclamation of the sand dam for erosion control commensurate with the wet climate, and use of the system to construct an above-water beach of non acid generating tailings to increase the closure security of the structure. A particularly unique aspect of the Kemess experience is hydraulic fill operations extending throughout the coldest winter months, as compared to other operations where such placement has traditionally been considered non-viable through the winter months

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

SUMMARY Commitment by all parties to partnering goals established early in the contract aided Affholder, Inc. in constructing 2,360m (7,700&apos;) of soft ground tunnel in Rancho Cordova, CA. Despite two zones of known contamination, encountering a zone of loose cobbles and boulders in a matrix of flowing sand, some perched water tables and a flooded tunnel after 2 upstream safety plugs failed, the Contractor finished the work 33 days early and only 1.91% over his original bid.

Fourteen samples of pyrite-bearing Archean greenstone rock (d < 6.35 mm, 0.04% < St < 1.22%) were characterized (particle size, chemistry, mineralogy) and subjected to laboratory dissolution testing. The only sulfide and carbonate minerals identified were pyrite and siderite, respectively. Quartz, chlorite and sericite typically comprised 90 to 98 percent of the mineral content. For the first 60 weeks, seven samples with sulfur contents less than or equal to 0.16% produced drainage pH values exceeding 6.0. Over this period, six of the seven samples with sulfur contents greater than or equal to 0.20% produced drainage pH below 6.0, with minimum values ranging from 3.2 to 4.7. The seventh sample (0.72% S) had a siderite content of 18%. Small amounts of magnesium and, to a lesser degree, calcium carbonates present in the siderite apparently dissolved to neutralize acid and maintain drainage pH above 6.0. Sulfate release rates generally increased as sulfur content increased, and the rates of pyrite oxidation estimated for individual samples were roughly half to five times that reported in the literature for the abiotic oxidation of pyrite by oxygen. Observed neutralization potentials ranged from 0.2 to 2.0 g CaCO3/g rock.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of &apos;mineral-geochemistry&apos;, and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

"There is a general consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western Canadian coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques. It is postulated that the concept studied extensively over the last four years at Alberta Research Council (ARC), and based on a combination of hydraulic mining, selective agglomeration with bitumen and/ or heavy oil, pipeline transportation and oil recovery from agglomerates, offers a particularly attractive solution to the problems associated with extraction, beneficiation, transportation and utilization of Western bituminous and subbituminous coals. Results of preliminary experimental work on the feasibility of pipeline agglomeration of metallurgical coal and hydraulic transportation of agglomerates are presented and discussed in the context of conventional agglomeration techniques in stirred tanks. IntroductionAlberta is endowed with enormous reserves of low-sulphur coals which could attract considerable attention of potential customers, but the remote location of this province handicaps its competitiveness on the world market. When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to &quot;orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation&apos;s coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

There are many factors affecting the strength of pillar, including width-to-height (W/H) ratio, mechanical properties of coal and surrounding rocks, property of partings in the coal, and the interface property between coal seam and the roof/floor. In this paper, the effect of varying pillar?s width-to-height ratio (W/H=3, 5, 7, and 10) and coal/rock interface cohesion (Cj =50 psi, 150 psi, and 300 psi) on pillar strength has been studied. The confinement effect of W/H ratio and interface shear strength is investigated by studying their effects on the average minimum principal stress developed in the pillar. The deformation behavior of the coal pillar is investigated. It is found that the pillar?s transition from strain softening to strain hardening behavior depends on its W/H ratio and the interface shear strength.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. Geological factors like major structures, joints, veins and alteration intensity are important factors that correlated with the stability of the Big Gossan stopes.CITATION:Sari, K, de Jong, G, Silalahi, P and Sunyoto, W, 2015.
