Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident re-construction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed namely (i)remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sightlines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

A pilot program was undertaken to evaluate a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to recover nickel, cobalt, copper and chromite from domestic nickel laterite resources. An existing five ton per day pilot plant was modified to accommodate treatment of laterite by the Bureau process, which employs reductive roasting, ammoniacal sulfate leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning to extract, separate, and recover nickel, cobalt and copper as high purity cathode products. Three distinct types of laterite i.e., limonite, saprolite and a mixture of limonite/saprolite were processed through the plant during three operating campaigns. Nickel cathode was made during all three campaigns, while cobalt cathode and chromite concentrate were recovered only during processing of limonite. Leach extraction of nickel and cobalt averaged 83 and 67 percent, respectively, while the overall recovery was 80 and 63 percent for nickel and cobalt, respectively. Initially, over-reduction of iron in the saprolitic calcine contributed to poor settling of the leached solids. This problem was overcome by careful control of reducing conditions and flocculant addition. An economic feasibility study was made for a 5000 TPD grassroots laterite processing facility scaled-up from pilot plant data. Estimated (+ 30) percent capital cost for a Nine and plant is $367 million with an estimated $103 million per year operating cost. The study indicates that low-grade domestic laterite may he processed with marginal profit- ability.

Together with the federal government the FAB organizes bilateral working group meetings in the commodity and mining sector. Project enquiries are being distributed from the FAB among their member companies."

To gather additional field data from the western United States, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed an array of field instrumentation at a longwall coal mine in Central Utah. The purpose of this field site was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include massive, stiff overburden and relatively deep cover. To accomplish this, field instrumentation was installed in the two-entry gate road between the fifth and sixth longwall panel in the current mining district.

Keywords: Thermal, conductivity, diffusivity, expansion, history, density, specific heat capacity, industrial rich high-carbon manganese slag The thermal conductivity of slag is an important parameter in the design of furnace-containment systems based on freeze-lining technology. Literature indicates that the crystal content of a slag has a significant influence on its thermal conductivity. Industrial, rich, manganese-bearing slag was cooled at different rates to create samples with different microstructures. The coefficients of thermal conductivity of these samples were measured in a nitrogen atmosphere from room temperature to 990°C at 100°C intervals. The laser-flash measurement technique was used for this purpose. Follow-up investigations included XRF and XRD and modelling in FACTSage.

Flawed mining studies have been major contributors to poor investment decisions in mining for many years, contributing to the long period of poor industry profitability. Most of the major mining houses have now adopted quite formal processes and quality standards for mining studies to reduce the potential for poor investment decisions in the future. Other organisations such as the World Bank also have specific requirements for particular types of studies, such as bankable studies. This increasing requirement for rigour and discipline means a highly structured and phased sequence of studies is now required along with the development and adoption of industry-wide standards in mine ventilation studies. New terms in the study process such as ?independent peer review? and ?hold and review? are assisting in this process. More traditional terms such as ?feasibility study? and ?pre-feasibility study? now have much more precise technical definitions. Specific standards for the ventilation components of the various phases of a mining study are proposed in this paper.

ignitions caused by cutting tools have occurred at a rate of some 14 per year in UK coal mines since 1965, mostly on the coalface. The rate has held steady despite reducing output and number of collieries. Investigations were carried out over this period into factors affecting both the concentration of firedamp in the cutting zone and the igniting source. A study into detecting and suppressing ignitions on shearers has been undertaken and it is feasible to prevent certain ignitions from spreading outside the cutting zone. Practical measures have been adopted by British Coal to identify frictional ignition sites and to lay down working procedures to minimise risk.

"The control of the operation of semi autogeneous grinding (SAG) mills is mainly achieved through adjustments of feed rate, water addition and speed of rotation. With the introduction of image based sensors it is possible to have on-line measurements of the size distribution of the ore feeding a SAG mill. This information could be used for the development of a control strategy to regulate a SAG mill feed size distribution to a set-point. The control of the size distribution is carried out by adjustment of the speed of the ore extractors underneath the ore stockpile. The potential and difficulty associated with the implementation of such control are assessed using a multivariable statistical analysis of data collected from the operation of the grinding circuit of the Agnico-Eagle Goldex mine in Val d’Or, QC. A control strategy for the ore feed size distribution is assessed using a simulator of the ore stockpile operation.INTRODUCTIONThe popularity of autogeneous (FAG) and semi autogeneous (SAG) grinding mills has been increasing over the last 20 years (Napier Munn et al., 1996). These mills use the ore or a combination of ore and steel balls as the grinding media. Since the ore is used as a media for the size reduction the mill ore feed size distribution impacts the performance of the mill. Several papers were recently published on this subject (Dance et al.,2011; Wennen & Murr, 2011; Dance & Valery, 2011; Allaire et al., 2011) showing the advantages of preparing the feed size distribution to maximize the circuit throughput or mill efficiency (Wennen & Murr, 2011; Dance & Valery, 2011; Allaire et al., 2011). With the availability of particle size sensor based on image analysis of the ore on a conveyor (Partanen et al., 2001; Bobo et al. 2004; Edwards et al., 2002; Wei & Craig, 2009) it is possible to control the size distribution of the ore feeding autogeneous or semi autogeneous mills (Partanen et al., 2001).This paper describes a method to control a size distribution index to a set point via the manipulation of the speed of the extractors that withdraw the ore from the stockpile feeding the grinding circuit. The paper consists of 4 sections. The first section describes the considered grinding circuit. A statistical analysis of the collected data on the grinding circuit is presented in the second section. This analysis demonstrates the necessity of using real-time adaptation mechanisms to develop a control strategy for the size distribution of a grinding circuit. The third section describes the method used to simulate the ore stockpile operation and the last section describes the preliminary development and assessment of a control strategy of size distribution of the ore feeding a SAG mill."

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. "It has been suggested that the pre-concentration of ore underground can bring positive economic and environmental benefits to underground mining, particularly at extreme depth. The integration of mineral processing systems for coarse waste rejection and disposal into the underground mining environment has a substantial impact on the economics and operation of the mine. A case study for the integration of underground pre-concentration at Falconbridge’s Thayer Lindsley and Fraser Copper operations in Sudbury, Ontario is discussed, with particular focus on ore evaluation, system design, integration, and impacts on the operation. Conclusions as to the overall feasibility and potential impacts of underground pre-concentration are presented.INTRODUCTIONObjectivesA scoping investigation has been conducted for Falconbridge Ltd on the Fraser Copper Zone and Thayer Lindsley mines in order to develop a better understanding of the operations, and to do a preliminary evaluation of the potential for pre-concentration of the ore underground. The objective was to develop a conceptual design and evaluation of a pre-concentration system for each site. The results are to be used as the basis for a more detailed future study.Underground Pre-ConcentrationThe pre-concentration of ore to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of material transported to the processing plant is not a new concept and has been in practise at several mines including the American Zinc Company in Mascot Tennessee (Munro et al, 1982), the Sullivan Mine in British Columbia and presently at Xstrata’s Mt Isa lead-zinc mine in Australia, as well as at several PGM mines operating in the South African Bushveld. For each of these mines, a high degree of waste rejection was achieved at a coarse particle size with good metallurgical recoveries. The benefits arising from the surface pre-concentration of ore are well documented in the literature (McCullough et al, 1999; Miller et al, 1978; Munro et al, 1982; Schena et al, 1990; Sivamohan & Forssberg, 1991)."

The new AIRDEK (tm) technique for pre-splitting in surface coal mines produces highwall conditions that have greater safety with lower costs for explosives, labor, and drilling. Successful applications have been made in highwalls ranging from 20 to 100 feet or more and in blasthole diameters from 3-1/2 inches to 12 inches.

"A ‘geologically constrained’ orebody model has long been hailed as vital for a Mineral Resource statement that is compliant with the South African Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code). In this paper, the requirements for geological modelling as contained in the outline for the SAMREC Code are considered, and whether the new modelling software available on the market is a ‘black box’ or is better for modelling than traditional methods of wireframe creation.Implicit geological modelling is a technique that uses a radial basis function to establish and update geological models relatively quickly and efficiently from borehole data, outcrop data, manually interpreted vertical or horizontal sections, and structural data. Assays and any coded drill-hole data, such as lithology and alteration, can be interpolated.Leapfrog Geo software is an example of this new approach to geological modelling. A case study of a short training course in geological modelling for non-geologists at the University of Witwatersrand, as part of the Higher Certificate in Mineral Resource Management, is presented. The benefits of this type of geological modelling software are considered for this type of assignment as well as for mining industry applications.The use of geological models in mine planning is reviewed and a case study is presented comparing the variations in mine plan design and financial output of 13 final-year Mine Design projects from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Mining Engineering. These designs were all based on the same geological model created in the traditional way, and yet the resultant mine designs were significantly different, with very different resulting financial outlooks for the project. This raises questions as to how significant a very detailed model in the pre-feasibility and feasibility phases of projects really is, considering the huge costs involved in gathering the required data to build a SAMREC-compliant geological model."

In metalliferous mining operations, subdrill is that portion of the blast hole that is drilled below the target grade elevation, and in most cases loaded with explosives. Its primary aim is to enable efficient excavation down to the target floor level. Subdrill is often described as being expensive and that excessive subdrill should be avoided, as it can result in damage to the subsequent floor, lead to difficult drilling conditions and higher vibration levels. As a result, many operations aim to apply the bare minimum amount of subdrill in order to excavate to the target floor. At a large open cut copper operation, challenging geological structure resulted in slabby and blocky fragmentation in the stemming region, resulting in poor crusher throughput due to bridging. To overcome the poor fragmentation in the top of the bench, longer than conventional subdrill was used to precondition the top third of the bench. The technique significantly improved the run of mine fragmentation and resulted in feed to the in-pit crushers that is more consistent, which produced less crusher downtime due to bridging. A new method of quantifying the energy in a blast has been created. Termed the linear powder factor, or energy factor, the calculation considers the energy contributed by the subdrill of the upper bench and its impact on the energy in the lower bench. The technique enables blast designs to be optimised to deliver finer fragmentation and more consistent blast outcomes. To support the layer of preconditioned rock at the top of the bench, an innovative new device was developed. The device is inserted into the drill collar immediately after drilling and remains in position throughout the subsequent steps of hole depth measurement, priming, loading and removed prior to stemming. The device not only supports the broken rock at the top of the bench, but also minimises the amount of drill cuttings that fall back into the hole. Furthermore, the device helps protect the hole from damage by external factors such as weather events, drill tracks, vehicle tyres and movement around the collar during measurement and loading of the blast hole.

Improvements in remote fire fighting technology are needed to reduce miner exposure to the dangers of fires and possibly save the lives of those who may become trapped. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with U.S. Foam Technologies, Inc1., conducted a series of experiments at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to study the stability, transport, control and fire extinguishing effectiveness of nitrogen-enhanced foam technology. Seventy three technical sessions highlighted innovative technologies and applications for the development of mineral resources. And the exhibit featured 421 companies worldwide and 632 exhibit booths. The 1999 SME Annual Meeting had 10% international attendance. Professionals from outside the United States were guests at the first SME International Reception.

The 21st Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel in Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Thomas J. O’Neil, recently retired president and chief operating officer of Cleveland Cliffs Mining. Prior to Cliffs, O’Neil spent 10 years with Cyprus Minerals. He was also professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct James Boyd and Thomas F. Walsh. Walsh discovered a rich gold telluride vein in Ouray, CO, which became the Camp Bird gold mine. Boyd was a former director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, vice president of Kennecott Copper and later president of Copper Range.

"The seventh National Safety Competition, that for 1931, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, was participated in by 350 mines and quarries operating in 34 States. Tables 1 to 5 show the relative standing of the various plants, Bronze trophies, known as the ""Sentinels of Safety,"" which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines were awarded to five companies, each company having established the best accident—prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided — namely, anthracite mining companies, bituminous—coal mining companies, metal—mining companies, operators of nonmetallic mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or open—cut mines. The trophies are awarded for one year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The outstanding feature of the contest of 1931 was the operation of a bituminous coal mine without a lost—time injury to any employee. While accident—tree records had previously been made by certain quarries, metal mines, and nonmetallic mineral mines, never before has such a feat been accomplished by a bituminous coal mine in the National Safety Competition. Whether or not such a record has been made by a bituminous—coal mining company not enrolled is the competition the writer does not know, but it is believed that the case referred to is unique among large coal—mining companies. The mine to which reference is made is No. 1 mine of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Dawson, N. Mex. To that company belongs the distinction not only of being the first coal—mining company among those enrolled in these yearly safety contents to operate its mine without an accident but also of occasioning the 'Sentinels of Safety' trophy for a bituminous mine to take its first journey west of the Mississippi River. For the past six years the trophy has been in West Virginia, Alabama, or Pennsylvania."

Environmental conflict management approaches and procedures have been used to successfully address and resolve a variety of issues, problems, and conflicts related to the extraction of natural resources. Companies in the mining industry have been involved in a range of controversies over planning, siting, permitting, environmental, and enforcement issues. Through the use of conflict resolution case studies, this paper will present approaches and procedures that can help companies and other involved parties to successfully manage and resolve differences in a mutually acceptable manner.
