Langenecker has reported significant reduction in strength of high-strength metals during ultrasonic t'ibration. Decreases in static yield stress an order of magnitude greater than the calculated stress amplitude of vibrations were reported by him for a stainless steel and for tungsten. in the present work, attempts were nzadc to verify such large reductions in yield and flats stresses using resonant librations of measured amplitudes. The results show that both the soft metals (copper and aluminum) and the high-strength metals (sleels) hare reductions in yield and .flow stresses no larger than the stress amplitude of libration. BLAHA and Langenecker,' investigating the effect of vibratory stresses on the deformation of zinc and aluminum, found a decrease in the static yield and flow stresses approximately equal to the vibratory stress imposed. Langenecker later extending this work to high-strength metals such as stainless steels and tungsten2 found a much larger effect. In these metals the static yield and flow stresses decreased by an amount more than an order of magnitude greater than the calculated vibratory stresses. It was suggested that this phenomenon could be a serious hazard to high-strength structures in an acoustic environment, such as a large rocket at launch, or could be used advantageously in the working of hard-to-work materials such as the refractory metals. Langenecker and others3 have investigated the effect of high-amplitude vibrations on many metal-forming operations. The results have been quite favorable with usually a large decrease in the energy necessary for the forming operation. The processes, however, involve large frictional forces and it is not clear whether the decreases in forming forces are to be ascribed to decreased friction or to decreased flow stresses. The present paper reports an attempt to determine the effect of accurately known vibratory stresses on the static yield and flow stresses. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The standard multicomponent resonator technique for measuring internal friction has been adapted to allow simultaneous high-amplitude vibration, internal-friction measurement, and tensile deformation. This has been described in detail elsewhere.4 Longitudinal oscillations of approximately 50 kc frequency are excited in a multicomponent resonator by a quartz transducer. A second transducer measures the amplitude of vibrations. Fig. 1 shows a schematic drawing of the resonator and grip arrangement and the displacement pattern produced. Since the centers of the dummy bars are at displacement nodes, they represent points where attachments will not materially affect the vibrations. The force is applied by a standard Instron tester. The sample may be deformed while simultaneously vibrating at up to 104 strain amplitude. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The effect of high-amplitude vibrations on the yield and flow stresses of copper. aluminum, tantalum. a soft iron, and a stainless steel has been measured. In addition samples of tungsten vibrating at stress levels up to 10' dynes per sq cm have been subjected to static stresses near the static yield stress with no indication of macroscopic deformation. Fig. 2 gives typical results for 99.999 pct polycrys-talline copper. A vibratory stress of 7 x 107 dynes per sq cm is applied at points "a" and removed at points "h". Calculation of pile foundations should possibly truly reflect its real work, mainly with respect to the value and distribution of settlements, pile internal forces and bending moments within a slab. Many empirical and theoretical methods serving for an assessment of the settlements of pile group overestimate its actual values obtained from field measurements (see Tejchman et al., 2001). In the paper a simple engineering method for calculation of pile foundations is presented. The method takes into account the interaction between the slab and a soil together with the phenomenon of non-uniform deformation of the soil-pile subsoil, particularly under large foundations. In the method the scheme of the slab resting on one-parameter elastic subsoil is assumed. The comparison of the calculation results for existing pile foundation with the field measurements shows good agreement between those values.

Based on this study, the angle of surface natural slope is the major contributor to the incremental horizontal displacement while the total movement is also playing an important role in some cases.

Two Rb-Sr ages are discernible in data concerning the leucocratic granite which is the youngest pre-sedimentation phase of the crystalline basement complex at Rum Jungle, Northern Territory, Australia. Whole-rockdata suggest that intrusion of this unit took place at about 2400 my ago, with a probable initial ratio around o·707; whole rock-potassium feldspar tie-lines indicate redistribution of strontium at about 1800 my ago. The former age correlates with other measurements on rocks which form basement to the mantling Pine Creek Geosyncline; the latter correlates also with isotopic evidence for regional metamorphism and emplacement of some younger intrusive granites elsewhere within the geosyncline. A few K-Ar ages, from scattered localities, conform generally with the later event or events which appear to have some connection with the structural deformation clearly observable both in the complex and the surrounding metasediments. It is these younger events which appear to match the residual evidence for the earliest detectable concentration of uranium minerals in the Alligator Rivers district.

"Since about 2002 there has been significant capital cost escalation, not inflation, in the mining industry causing turmoil for successful project completion. Project capital costs have more than doubled and some cases tripled in this time period. This has rendered many projects to be economically challenged and in some cases not viable. In addition higher than expected operating costs have further adversely affected project metrics such as NPV and IRR. Capital cost increases for projects have been widely reported globally. This current paper reviews three items. Firstly, why such capital increases and the various components that make up capital estimates. Secondly, it looks at reasons why preliminary estimates, for example at scoping and pre-feasibility level, have been lower than the ultimate constructed costs. Such increases and differences in estimates have caused major problems for mine builders and have led to a general nervousness on the part of those providing project finance. Thirdly, what discipline is needed in project execution in an attempt to mitigate such capital increases. The paper will hopefully give a better understanding of the various issues and factors involved for those in the mining industry.INTRODUCTION The years 2012 and 2013 were a turbulent time for the mining industry. The European economic crisis, politics, metal price volatility and a wave of changes of CEO´s in some of the major mining companies all contributed to a challenging couple of years. Two issues stood out. First, the huge increases reported in the capital costs of projects, where increases of 100% - 300% were not uncommon and in some cases exceeded that during the first decade of the 21st century. Second, company write downs related to takeovers during the boom and the stabilization/correction in commodity prices. These have led to great uncertainty, made it difficult (or impossible) to raise project financing costs, contributed to the changes at CEO level and placed many projects either on hold or cancelled altogether. It is commonplace now to read of companies talking of reduced capital expenditure and making a complete review of their projects and operations to contain costs."

An innovative sprayable waterproofing membrane in combination with the traditional Nordic method of waterproofing with polyethylene foam sheets was used for the waterproofing of the tunnel. The sprayable membrane was integrated in the final sprayed concrete lining in a sandwich structure, hence constituting a composite water-proof lining based on sprayed concrete. The spray able membrane was applied in areas with small to moderate water ingresses, making up approximately 50% of the total area requiring waterproofing in the tunnel. State-of-the-art application technology with a computerized spraying robot was used. A consistent application of the required thickness at a high speed was thereby achieved.

Various circuits were tried at Mount Isa Mines during the period 1959 to 19G3 with the objective of improving the differential flotation of galena and sphalerite. Many benefits and disadvantages of the various circuits were revealed. An analysis' of ore characteristics and their effect on flotation was made -and resullted in the design of a proposed circuit which is currently in the process of installation.INTRODUCTIONSince 1936 when lead-zinc sulphide flotation commenced at Mount Isa, at least three types of ore have been encountered.Each ore has presented problems to flotation metallurgists.The three types of ore are,1. partially oxidized upper level sulphide ore,2. Black Star ore from the lower levels with its carbonaceous fraction, and3. Black Rock ore which is similar to 2, but more free milling.In retrospect a number of the metallurgical successes of the past were short lived. Often flowsheets or 0perating practices were designed to solve a single metallurgical problem associated with the current ore being treated. As the ore changed the problem would vanish and the method originally taken to counter the problem could become unnecessary or deleterious to the treatment of the new ore. This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. Complex and distinct geological units spread along the 7-mile long 30-ft inside diameter Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project in Detroit, Michigan. Its construction is divided in two tunnel construction packages: The South Tunnel, to be driven in finely laminated weak TG Limy Shale, will be excavated by a shielded TBM with precast concrete segmental lining, while the North tunnel, predominantly in a relatively more competent geologic formation Antrim Shale, will be excavated by a main beam TBM with a two-pass lining system. The adits and deaeration chambers will be excavated by sequential excavation method. This paper addresses the process of selecting excavation methods and lining systems for shafts, tunnels, connecting adits, and deaeration chambers.

The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

Les ressources naturelles ont en général été le moteur du développement économique et social des nations. Les pays aujourd?hui développés sont pour la plupart d?anciens eldorado, charbonniers ou pétroliers. D?autres le sont toujours. L?Afrique fait cependant figure d?exception : même en étant comblé de ressources naturelles exceptionnelles, les pays de ce continent croulent sous le poids de la pauvreté et de ses acabits que sont les maladies, la famine, la guerre et l?insurrection sociale. On reconnaît néanmoins qu?il y a des cas particuliers comme le Botswana, la Namibie, l?Afrique du Sud. Face à cette situation, beaucoup de scénarii ont été proposés sans pour autant porté les fruits espérés. Le rapport Brundtland suggère que le développement durable est la clé du succès car elle veille à la prospérité économique, à l?équité dans la société et à la pérennité dans l?environnement. Pour l?Afrique, beaucoup de facteurs doivent être considérés et les solutions se doivent d?être pratiques et éthiques. Le futur ingénieur des mines qui a écrit ce rapport, apporte sa vision de la situation non sans avoir auparavant analysé les faits. Cette démarche, qui se veut avant tout éthique, inclut les aspects sociaux, économiques et politiques. Introduction In the 40s, 50s and the 60s, many economists, among which Harold Hotelling from South Carolina University, thought that developing countries could reach socio-economical success by extracting their natural resources such as oil and minerals. The current economical disaster seems to have contradicted that belief and critics like Davis Graham (Colorado School of Mines) and Michael Ross (University of California at Los Angeles) even suggested that extractive activities stop in Africa. But the experts of the World Bank (Mining Department) and some mining and oil companies are committed to reverse the tendency by implementing a new approach. Considering the principles of sustainable development defined in the Brundtland report (1987), we decided to analyze the possibility of giving the extractive industry a catalytic role in creating a socially, economically and environmentally development in Africa. In other words, can we continue to mine and extract oil in Africa for its blossoming future under the ruling of the sustainable development? In the following, we start by explaining the African socio-economic and political context. After a brief definition of the sustainable development, we explain why, for Africa, some believe in the extractive industry and some don?t. In the end, we draw out conciliatory arguments.

The area, A, under a gamma-ray log that passes through a horizontal bed given by: A = gl/k. Here is the equivalent concentration of U3O8 in the body, l the thickness of the body, and k the calibration factor or sensitivityof the logger. The area is independent of the logging speed or logger time constant.This relationship, together with the first moment about the maximum of the log and its value there suflicient to determine the thickness, position of the centre of the bed from the log maximum and the concentration of U3O8.Numerical results obtained from artificial and field data show that the computed results arc as good as those obtained by methods such as the inverse filter technique and the iterative method. The present method yields results that arc easier to feed into an ore reserve data base.

When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. In starting to dredge, a tackle was attached to near the upper end of the boom, and a line or chain was carried over a cat head from the crab winch...

Ontario Power Generation is building a 10.4-km water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Canada. The tunnel is a two-pass, cast-in-place prestressed concrete-lined pres-sure tunnel with a nominal internal diameter of 12.7 m. It is mostly situated within the Queenston formation which swells in contact with fresh water and has very aggressive groundwater. Tunneling in this material presents challenges in both design and construction. The tunnel design includes for a membrane to eliminate the potential for rock swelling and to protect the concrete liner from the ground conditions. A unique three-stage Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) is being used and is expected to provide an equitable method of dealing with any variations in subsurface conditions.

When xanthates or dithiophosphates are used as collectors in sulphide ore flotation, adsorbed species may be identified by gas chromatography of the volatile products formed during low temperature pyrolysis. For collector additions ,as low as 20 g/tonne of ore, pyrolysis of the flotation products usually gives' an olefin directly related to the particular xanthate or Aerofloat reagent used. The method is able to provide valuable qualitative and quantitative data relating to the extent of collector adsorption and the resulting changes in the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the mineral surface.

Automation technologies are increasingly envisaged to improve underground mining productivity. However, the technologies need to be used and adopted gradually in order to get the best benefits. This paper presents the technical and operational aspects of autoguided production vehicles at Brunswick Mine. During 2001 Noranda?s Brunswick Mine has successfully commissioned an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two orepasses. Operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. The data obtained up to now indicate that the system can operate reliably in mine production
