Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. This paper describes the core logging process with case examples showing how the logged data can be used for underground and open pit mine design.

In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Ivan caused the Pigeon River in western North Carolina to flood. This flooding eroded the embankment below Interstate 40 (I-40) and sent one of the eastbound lanes, along with the roadway shoulder, into the river below the embankment. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed to reopen all the lanes of I-40 as soon as possible and considered this damage to be an emergency situation. NCDOT contracted Schnabel Foundation Company to design and build a repair that would keep this important interstate open and reestablish the eastbound lane. The obstacles included limited work room, the requirement of keeping the remaining lanes of I-40 in service, and producing a final product that would be relatively maintenance free and last at least 100 years. The proposed repair had to consider that the existing interstate was founded on a rock fill that was constructed from rock blasted off the adjacent mountain side. The selected design included two, tied-back micropile walls to address these obstacles and other issues. Each of the walls were constructed of 10.75 inch diameter micropiles and corrosion-protected tieback anchors installed through the existing rock fill into competent bedrock, concrete wales, and a reinforced shotcrete facing. This successful project was completed during the coldest months of the year and within the timeframe established by the State of North Carolina. This paper will discuss the design and construction of the repair and the many challenges that had to be overcome.

In 1995, mining engineer Alain Gachet thought about using Earth-observation satellite imagery to search for precious minerals. The latest radar Earth-observation satellite, Canada’s RADARSAT-1, had just been successfully launched at the time, creating new opportunities for commercial applications. Gachet was working in Congo Brazzaville as an oil executive and general secretary of Elf Congo for the French national oil company Elf Aquitaine. He understood that the RADARSAT-1 launch promised new and cost-effective sources of data for mineral and oil exploration. “It was early 1996 before I ordered my firstRADARSAT-1 satellite images,” said Gachet. “I was first struck by the quantity of information delivered by the radar images. Linear structures and faults were clearly defined and subtle topographic features were tremendously enhanced,” he said. “It was ‘tree top geology,’ but this kind of information appeared to be key for finding new gold seams.”

Clearly a plant designed only to treat average ore at the nameplate rate will fail to achieve nameplate in any typical year. To insert the necessary capability to achieve nameplate it is common process engineering design practice that plant must be able to treat an ore with 80th percentile value (hardness or competence values for example) at the nameplate rate. In the authorÆs experience, apart from a couple of notable cases, this has been applied reasonably well as a principal, and with widespread success. However, in a number of recent instances it became clear that the use of the 80th percentile number would have resulted in significant under design of the plant. This paper makes the case that the 80th percentile, as a principal, has can have serious flaws and its use needs to be assessed on a case by case basis. The discussion in this paper is the first step in developing a new design principal, and the associated methodology for selection of a design value, that will ensure plants are designed to achieve their nameplate capacities.CITATION:David, D, 2013. "The McClean Lake operation is located in the Eastern Shore of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan some 700-air kilometers north of Saskatoon. It is operated by Cogema Resources Inc., the major share holder of the joint venture consisting of Cogema Resources Inc., Denison Mines Limited and OURD, a consortium of Japanese utilities.The JEB mill is the first uranium mill to be constructed and licensed in North America within the last 15 years. The mill uses conventional uranium unit process but employs innovative techniques unique to the JEB mill.This paper presents brief descriptions of the various unit processes, the innovations and the commissioning strategies developed to achieve the designed production capacity in the shortest possible time.INTRODUCTIONThe McClean Lake ore body was discovered in 1979, followed by the discovery of the JEB ore body in 1982. From 1985 to 1990, a cluster of deposits named Sue A, Sue B and Sue C were discovered. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) of the McClean Lake project began in 1990 under a joint federal-provincial process. Following the public hearings in 1993, the governments gave approval to proceed with the construction of the project, subject to fulfilling licensing requirements.The McClean Lake ores are located in the uranium-rich geological region of Saskatchewan known as the Athabasca Basin, 700 air kilometers north of Saskatoon. The JEB mill is located near the mined out JEB open pit that is now used as the tailing depository.The approved mill has a production capacity of 6,000,000 pounds of U3O8 annually and is capable and licensed to process JEB, Sue A, Sue B, Sue C, McClean Lake, and Midwest Lake deposits. Although the EIS has been approved, Mining of the Midwest Lake deposit has not been approved at this time."

Steele: The global nuclear power industry is a major contributor to the electrical needs of the world. Though generation by nuclear reactors has primarily attracted attention through the reactor accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, nuclear power continues to quietly and safely provide power to a growing and power-hungry world population. As of March 2008, 30 countries were operating 439 nuclear power reactors. Nuclear power plants provided about 15 percent of the world?s electricity production in 2007. France leads the world in nuclear utilization, with 77 percent of its power coming from nuclear plants. And Lithuania, Slovakia and Belgium each derive more than 50 percent of their power needs from nuclear plants. For much of the developed world, nuclear generation has already been contributing significantly to the supply of electricity. Additionally, 34 new nuclear plants are under construction in 14 countries. Leading the rush to build new nuclear generating plants are China, Russia and India. Each of these countries is building six new nuclear power plants. These 18 plants, totaling almost 12,000 MW of generation capacity, will require about 7.25 kt (16 million lbs) of U3O8 for their initial fuel load and will consume about 2.45 kt/a (5.4 million lbs/year) for the rest of their operating lives. The rest of the world, outside of the United States, has used nuclear power as a viable and economic generation alternative since the commercialization of utility nuclear reactors. This paper sets out to examine the possible relationships between three factors, they are, the rate of growth of world production of minerals, the growth of Australian production and the growth of scientific and engineering knowledge.The first two are quantified, in terms of tonnes and value. The third, an abstract concept "knowledge", requires to be quantified, in terms of manpower.A mathematical model, which has general application, was derived to demonstrate certain axiomatic premises and to define, more precisely, basic concepts related to the philosophy of knowledge.Finally a summary is made of education-cum-industry issues.

An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

Air tabling of zircon-rich non-conductor products containing quartz enables most of the fine quartz present to be rejected without a markedloss of zircon. The coarser quartz in the air table feed can be separated from the zircon by screening one or more air table products, the oversize products containing most of the quartz and little of the zircon. Air tabling, with or without screening, is more efficient than wet tabling alone for the removal of fine quartz, but not for the removal of coarse quartz. Practically all of the quartz can be separated from the zircon by using wet tabling in conjunction with hydraulic classification, or by using air tabling in conjunction with dry launder treatment, in which a degree of sizing takes place that is advantageous for subsequent air tabling.INTRODUCTIONBack-dune and inland beach sand deposits usually contain fine wind-blown quartz, and neither spiral nor wet table concentration, alone or in conjunction, makes a clean separation of heavy minerals from quartz. Many rutile plants recover rutile and zircon from a low-quartz, wet-table concentrates by means of magnetic and electrostatic separation; some rutile and zircon are lost in the table tailings. Other rutile plants, and two of the ilmenite plants in Western Australia, recover rutile or ilmenite respectively, from a spiral concentrate containing several per cent of quartz, and then subject the non-conductor product to an additionalgravity concentration process to separate the zircon from the quartz. Some zircon is lost in the additional gravity process, but all of the rutile or ilmenite in the spiral concentrate is, or should be, recovered as high-grade concentrate. The higher recovery of rutile or ilmenite by this treatment method is offset by the expense of drying part of the feed twice, as a wet process is usually used to separate the quartz...

Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

Pre-reduction of chromite outside the submerged-arc furnace (SAF) can significantly lower the specific power consumption in the SAF process. Conventional processes for the pre-reduction of the ore operate at relatively high temperatures, at 1400-1500°C. It is possible to enhance the rate of reduction at low temperatures by optimizing the flow rate of inert gas over the reaction site. The influence of the flow rate of inert gas on the rate of reduction of chromite ore was investigated. The rate of reduction initially decreased wit the flow rate of the gas. It increased subsequently at higher flow rates to be followed by a decrease again. There was an optimum flow rate at which maximum reduction could be obtained. It was possible to achieve high levels of reduction at 1200°C by optimising the flow rate of the gas. The degree of reduction obtained was comparable to that obtained at 1400-1500°C, by conventional process routes.

Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it comes into contact with the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb onto bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can facilitate the adsorption of oleic acid onto bastnaesite. Results from attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that all of these collectors adsorb strongly onto bastnaesite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected. The ATR-FTIR results confirm those obtained by AFM. In general, hydroxamic acid collectors (HA and SHA) adsorb onto bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

Factors governing the dissolution of nickel and iron in pentlandite and pyrrhotite concentrates from Mt. Windarra were studied for aqueous solutions at normal temperatures and pressures. The effects of dissolved dioxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen ions, and chloride ions are described. The direct reaction of aerated water wiili pyrrhotite is much faster than with pentlandite, and reaction rates are proportional to the dissolved dioxygen concentration. In both cases divalent metal sulphates are produced initially. The subsequent oxidation of iron(II) to iron(III) and its oxolation produces acid solutions which rapidly attack both minerals. The presence of carbon dioxide or chloride ion has little effect on these rates.

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.
