Mining operations are continually aiming to reduce operating costs to improve plant profitability. One way in which the Cannington operation sought to achieve this was by increasing the wear life and reducing the energy consumption of their flotation mechanisms. This was made possible using Outotec’s FloatForce mechanism. The FloatForce mechanism has been developed by Outotec over a six year period involving both CFD modelling and rigorous site testing. FloatForce delivers improved air dispersion and cell agitation efficiency; as such it can be operated at lower rotor tip speeds when compared to Outotec’s previous mechanism.Cannington trialled three FloatForce mechanisms in a train of ten OK38 zinc roughers. The mechanisms’ rotational speed was reduced by 10% compared to the previously installed MultiMix mechanisms. The purpose of the trial was to quantify the energy saving and assess whether there was any reduction in plant metallurgical performance.The trial was successful with FloatForce delivering a 17% reduction in power, an improvement in wear and improved recovery. Analysis of pre and post-installation metallurgical accounting data showed the following:The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of zinc to zinc final concentrate of 0.4 – 4.0%*The FloatForce installation resulted in a recovery increase of lead to zinc final concentrate of 0.0 – 0.3%*There was no statistically significant change in silver recovery to zinc final concentrate that can be attributed to FloatForce**95% confidence interval (CI) using multiple linear regression models.The Cannington operation is now in the process of further optimizing its power consumption and wear savings by changing the remaining OK38 zinc and lead rougher float cells to FloatForce mechanisms.CITATION:Bird, M, Oats, B and Sganzerla, M, 2015. The 2,120-foot long cable stayed Penobscot Narrows Bridge that carries US Route 1 over the Penobscot River between Verona Island and Prospect, Maine is supported on four foundation units, one below each pylon and one at each abutment. Due to varying subsurface conditions along the bridge alignment, the structure was designed to be supported on foundations consisting of high-capacity steel H-section piles (Verona Pylon), a mat bearing on a prepared bedrock surface (Prospect Pylon) and spread footings bearing on compacted rockfill (abutments). The 70-foot by 80-foot (plan area) Verona Pylon foundation was designed to be supported by 288, 430-kip design capacity steel H-section piles (HP14x117, 50 ksi steel) driven through up to 100 feet of dense glacial till deposits containing cobbles and boulders up to 3 feet in diameter. The piles were installed using a single-acting diesel hammer (Delmag D62-22) with a maximum rated energy of 165 kip-ft. Thirteen representative piles were selected for dynamic testing (ASTM D-4945) to verify pile capacity, hammer efficiency and pile stresses. Dynamic testing determined that four different pile driving criteria were needed across the site due to variation in the bedrock and soil resistance below the footing plan area. Approximately 4 percent of the production piles were damaged/rejected due to misalignment and/or damage as a result of encountering the cobbles and boulders embedded in the glacial till. The rejected piles were located randomly throughout the plan limits of the foundation mat. Subsequent structural analyses indicated that the foundation was capable of safely supporting the design loads without the need for installing replacement piles. Evaluation of dynamic testing results with signal matching and pile driving records provided valuable information on pile side and tip resistance. Evaluations were made regarding predicted versus actual pile lengths, pile bearing material, distribution of skin friction and end bearing capacities.

Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence- Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents a case study where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to calculate the surface subsidence associated with several panels of a Northern Appalachian longwall coal mine. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin seam or vein type deposits. In this paper. the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at three longwalls. The subsidence results from the model are compared with field measurements and analyzed The results from the case study in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide fairly accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies are recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

This paper presents a case history of design, prediction, probe and production pile driving monitoring, loading tests and installation of over 3,300 prestressed concrete piles for a building complex consisting of 12, 5- and 6-story over parking buildings. The project was recently completed in three-phases over a span of 4 years. The subsoil conditions were explored by performing 25, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings throughout the site. Various types of driven pile foundations were considered and following an evaluation of high structural loads and site-specific constraints such as variable depth of bearing layer of Florida limestone and quality of clay and limestone layers, a prestressed concrete pile support system was selected as the most economical and effective foundation approach. The building foundations were designed for a pile capacity of 353 kN (40 tons) in compression, 45 kN (5 tons) in lateral capacity for a deflection of 0.64 cm (0.25 in.), and 133 kN (15 tons) in uplift capacity. The axial and lateral allowable pile capacity and lengths were predicted using SPT91 and LPILE computer programs, which are generally used in Florida. The validation of these capacities was derived from 144 probe piles and performance of 12 pile loading tests on selected probe piles. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared very well with the capacities from the loading tests on probe piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 4,186 prestressed concrete piles (including 144 probe piles) in different building areas across the project site to depths ranging from 8 to 21 m (25 to 90 ft) below existing ground elevation as part of foundation support system. This engineered, monitored, and tested foundation solution provided an effective and satisfactory basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for this 12, 5- and 6-story over parking building complex. The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

The augered cast-in-place piling technique was used to install deep foundations 20 feet into weathered sandstone. The project involved the upgrading of the Air Quality Control System (AQCS) for a 560 megawatt coal fired power plant located in Stillwater, Minnesota. The site subsurface consisted of 20 feet of overburden overlying weak sandstone. The overburden consisted of sands and gravels with cobbles and boulders, and variable thicknesses of peat. Ground-water at the site was approximately 8 feet deep. Two foot diameter piers were selected to facilitate installation through the cobbles and boulders in the over-burden and to penetrate the sandstone 22 feet. During installation of the first pier, the weak sandstone broke down to sand-sized material that could not be cleaned from the pier hole without the use of slurry to hold the material in suspension. However, the use of slurry would significantly impact both schedule and cost. Since the sandstone could be easily drilled with the pier equipment, it was believed that 2 foot diameter deep foundations could be installed as designed using augered cast-in-place piling techniques. A brief test drilling pro-gram was conducted to evaluate the viability of 2 foot diameter continuous flight augers penetrating 22 feet into the weak sandstone. The test drilling indicated that augered cast-in-place installation techniques should be successful. Following a short delay to mobilize the additional required equipment, construction commenced. Installation of the 2 foot diameter augered cast-in-place piling to a depth of 22 feet into the weak sandstone was successfully performed.

The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

Ground characterized by hard boulders embedded in soft matrix represents one of the most challenging conditions for TBMs, as the cutterhead must cope with the non-optimal conditions of cutting hard blocks while simultaneously excavating through soft, soil-like matrix material. Dowden and Robinson (2001) and Hunt and Mazhar (2004) summarize several case histories relating to the problems of advancing a TBM through boulder-laden ground and provide guidance with respect to appropriate site investigations and baselining strategies. Some rock types constituting boulder-laden ground include: ?Sedimentary Rocks?cemented alluvial channel deposits, colluvium/talus, landslide debris, and glacial till. ?Igneous Rocks?agglomerates, lahars, and pyroclastic deposits. ?Metamorphic Rocks?tectonic mélange and cataclastic fault zones. ?Decomposed Rocks?corestone bearing saprolites. Disc cutters are commonly utilized to cut the hardblocks; however, as compared to the understanding of disc cutter behavior in hard continuous rocks, little is known regarding fundamental cutting mechanisms in highly heterogeneous bouldery ground conditions. To advance this understanding, a suite of full scale tests have been performed using a linear cutting machine at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). This paper summarizes the observed cutting mechanisms and their practical implications for TBM excavations through boulder-laden ground.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

The 2005 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention continued the upbeat mood found in 2004. The global mining industry is booming due to higher commodity prices in nearly every sector. Other factors include low commodity inventories, China’s strong resource demands, the weak U.S. dollar, the very strong Euro, global uncertainties, an almost overripe investment climate for natural resources and the highest mining exploration budgets in seven years. Even unglamorous commodities, like iron, uranium and zinc, received copious attention in talks, the investors’ exchange, the core shack and in certain hospitality suites. The following impressions were gathered at the convention and enhanced by conference handouts and some abstracts that are available on the PDAC’s Web site, www.pdac.ca. At least 119 papers were presented, almost twice last year’s number.

Holcim, one of the world's leading suppliers of cement, aggregates and concrete, has set up a few years ago a working group “Quarry” in order to optimize the performance of its central European quarry operations in terms of work safety, environmental standards and economic performance. One of the activities of this working group "Quarry" addresses the subject of blast fragmentation in the quarries. A benchmark study of the blast work in all quarries has shown substantial differences for the various operations in terms of drill& blast costs. Especially big differences were found with respect to the drilling patterns as a function of the borehole diameters and with respect to the utilization of the borehole volume for charging the explosives.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metro, a rapid transit system that will serve the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland, has been under construction for about two years. Construction of the Metro by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority involves a large amount of cut and cover, soil tunnel, and rock tunnel construction. To aid initial construction and improve future designs, performance observations were undertaken on tunnels in the initial construction phase. The University of Illinois Department of Civil Engineering was engaged to carry out a comprehensive program of field observations and measurements for this purpose. One part of the program was on the first soft ground tunnel constructed in the system. The tunnel is a 2200-ft (670 m) twin-bore section, designated Contract A-2, in downtown Washington. Two objectives of this program were to determine the relationship of construction procedure to settlements and to observe the pattern of soil movement around the tunnel as an aid in evaluating underpinning criteria for nearby structures. A test section, consisting t three instrument lines located across the tunnel path, was established prior to mining in Lafayette Park to measure in detail both vertical and lateral soil displacements as the tunnel was mined through the section. The site was selected because it is free from surface structures and access for installation and reading of the instruments was convenient. Load and distortion measurements on the lining were also made within the test section; observations of construction procedure were maintained throughout construction.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

"Hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is the most prevalent industrial disease. It is ranked on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) priority list for major work related injuries. Uncontrolled noise not only has a physical effect, but is also a psychological hazard affecting the performance and well being of man. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is irreversible, yet it is preventable. The first defence against noise (noise control engineering) is a high priority in the mining industry. Second defences should be a last resort when the engineering control of noise is inadequate. Hearing conservation programs and the use of conventional hearing protection devices seem to have failed in the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. If compensation payouts that quadrupled in the past ten years are used as a barometer for the success of existing hearing conservation programs, then new strategies and technologies need to be investigated. The best practice Hearing Protection Device (HPD) may be seen as the minimum standard for second defence noise control.Conventional hearing protection is widely applied, but also misused in the industry as well as in the mining sector. Empirical research results, ownership, general attitudes of workers as well as qualitative aspects will be explored. The paper provides reasons, evidence, case studies and strategies regarding the best practice hearing protection philosophy (the Noise Clipper Model) as implemented in the Implats Mining Group. Worldwide tendencies towards custom-made HPD’s, findings that indicate improvements in hearing conservation programs and finally the successful application of Custom-made Hearing Protection Devices, will be outlined."

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

Although grouted piles have been used for several decades since the idea was proposed in the 1970s, their design is mostly based on experience and unpublished proprietary methods. There is little research on grouting drilled shaft tips and even less on grouting shaft sides. This paper presents the analysis of 4 instrumented pile loads tests on base and shaft grouted piles from different sites in Egypt; with emphasis on one of the tests, to demonstrate the analysis process. The data from the tests are analyzed to model the development of unit side friction (USF) with relative displacement. A numerical model using the finite element software PLAXIS is used to investigate the effect of grouting on the surrounding soil stress state. The paper combines the observations from full scale pile load tests and results from the numerical model to suggest an idealized behavior of side friction development with relative displacement of the grouted part of the shaft. The suggested model considers an envelope of Unit Side Friction (USF) with relative displacement, initially dominated by the grout resistance then at higher relative displacements, the friction with radially pressured soil takes over. The grout provides very high USF values up to a relative displacement of 2mm. Then, the USF drops to a typical pile soil side friction behavior; however, this friction is affected by the contact stress between pile and soil, which significantly increases due to compaction grouting. INTRODUCTION Base and shaft pile grouting has been significantly developing in recent years to accommodate the unfavorable conditions in major projects such as the high loads in high rise building and founding on problematic soil formations. Grouting aims to decrease settlements and increase the capacity of the pile under axial load. The technique is first introduced by Kraft (1974) but gained popularity in the 1980s. Typically there are two types of grouting; compaction, and permeation. Compaction grouting is more common in pile foundations practice, and many researchers have provided case histories of pile load tests on base grouted piles and base and shaft grouted piles (Gouvenot and Gabaix,1975; Stocker, 1983; Ghazali et al., 1988; Fleming, 1993; Kusakabe et al., 1994; Robson and Wahby,1994; Joer and Randolph, 1998; Hamza and Leoni, 1998; Mullins et al. 2000; Littlechild et al., 2000; Suckling and Eager, 2001; Dapp and Mullins, 2002; Ho, 2003; Fu and Zhou, 2003; Brettmann and NeSmith, 2005; Ruiz, 2005; Mullins, 2006; Dapp and Brown, 2010; Beadman et al., 2012; Nguyen et al., 2013; Miller et al., 2013; Sinnreich and Simpson, 2015; Hui and Lin, 2015). Compaction grouting is meant to densify the soil around the pile and below the base rather than permeate this soil and increase its cohesion. Research showed that grouting increases the capacity of the piles by a factor of 2~5. The variation in capacity increase depends on pile type, grouting process, and especially grouting pressure. Although there are many case histories of pile load tests on grouted piles but there is no well-defined agreed-upon method to predict grouted pile capacity as typically done in ungrouted piles. Few lab experiments discussed the shaft grouting effects on the soil especially the compaction grouting. The experiments concluded that the compaction grouting forms a homogeneous layer between the pile and the soil, and a residual effective stress is achieved simultaneously with a significant densification of the soil around the pile with noticeable decreasing in void ratio. (Fattahpour et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015). Recently, studies used numerical analysis to investigate the behavior of the grouted piles and the changes in the surrounding soil (Chiang et al., 2013). Several advancements to the technique were made in response to the technical design and operational challenges posed by the unique site conditions. New geophysical resistivity monitoring techniques were developed to monitor solution migration during the injections. These developments are presented along with discussion of gold production resulting from the project.

Introduction Joints often have profound effects on elastic properties and strength of rock masses and therefore on rock slope stability. In surface mine slopes, joints are usually too numerous to be taken into account individually, so an equivalent properties approach is necessary. Previous work that treats a jointed rock mass as an equivalent composite material of joints and intact rock between resulted in excellent agreement between estimated and true rock mass elastic moduli in case of fully persistent joints (e.g., Pariseau, 1999) Rock mass failure mechanisms on joints and through intact rock were retained obviating the need for an equivalent rock mass strength. Impersistent joints, which are not continuous on a joint plane, can be accommodated (Pariseau, 2003). However, slope stability analysis of a large, deep copper mine indicated a need for computational efficiency even in two-dimensional analysis of vertical sections through pit walls (Puri, 2006). The analyses by the popular finite element method used small elements of bench size near the pit slopes and much larger elements away from the pit walls. The reasons for the graded meshes were numerical quality (small elements) and computational economy (large elements). Small elements contained only a few joints, while the larger elements contained hundreds of joints and led to impractical computation run times (days!). A new modeling procedure that recognizes sufficiently large elements as representative volume elements (REV’s) overcomes this obstacle. A companion improvement recognizes the concept of a representative area element (RAE) in association with joint impersistence and the probability that joint material occupies a considered site. Both are steps towards greater model realism and a practical slope stability analysis procedure. Consider the open pit mine photo shown in Figure 1(a), a companion plan view in Figure 1(b), and the problem of slope stability where high slope angles favor economics but low slope angles favor safety. These competing factors in surface mining generally result in some sections of the mine that have unstable slopes that require monitoring and perhaps mitigating action to improve stability. Although stability of a given section may not be easy to quantify with a single number, useful design guidance can be obtained from a finite element analysis of a proposed mining sequence leading to future pit slopes and profiles.
