For the first half of the 21st Century the USA will rely on the same mix of fuels as for the past 50 years: Petroleum will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in severe stress on gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging ‘piggy-back’ trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluents is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10mg/l cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a pre-neutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40g/l NaOH. A pre-neutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was approached by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to present a paper on the current practice in terms of the valuation of mineral projects and properties, given the development of a Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, developed in Australia (the VALMIN Code), and a similar Code in Canada (the CIMVal Code).This paper is the result of research and investigation into the matter, in terms of the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves, financial reporting practice, the Listing Rules of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and various practices in valuation. The paper establishes that a strong linkage has already been established between the SAMREC Code for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves and the Listing Rules, and that, for completeness, a Code for Valuation needs to be developed. This Code will be similar to its international counterparts, with the necessary inclusions which are relevant to South Africa, and will provide guidelines and definitions on matters such as transparency, materiality and competency in valuation. It proposes that a multi-stakeholder steering committee be established under the auspices of the SAIMM, to deliberate and design a process for establishing such a Code.

At least for the time being, these seems to be general but not universal agreement that Mississippi Valley type ore deposits formed entirely or in major proportion from heated connate brines (e.g. 1) Even with that agreement, major questions remain. I will present a coherent geochemical model and look at alternative views in the context of that model. The pattern of the following discussion is 1) the general geochemistry of the ore fluid, 2) the density-temperature relations and possible mechanisms of flow of those fluids, 3) the mechanisms of transportation and deposition of the ore minerals, and 4) a summary of a coherent model of genesis. The data equivocally define much about the deposits. The answer is still elusive.

Commencing with early experiences in iron ore beneficiation made at Beeshoek Mine, the paper follows through the process of extensive mineralogical and metallurgical investigations carried out during feasibility study. The paper will discuss the design process and logic followed over the last years, the challenges and decisions the design team faced in order to draw the conclusions that ultimately resulted in today’s value add approach at Assmang’s Khumani Operations.As integral part of the benefi ciation concept, a focus is set on the jigs, explaining the plant concepts, planned expansions and their contribution to the overall value add approach at the mine.The case study is intended to describe the outcomes of the design versus the actual achieved and the further value add projects to be implemented. As for future prospect, the incorporation of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) demonstrates Assmang Khumani’s pursuit to maximise productivity and overall recovery.DMS was evaluated as an alternative to jigging within a comparative test work study, but in conclusion the option had to be excluded due to its inability to achieve the high density cut point required to achieve the sales specifi cations. In contrast, the investigation on producing an additional middlings fraction on the lumpy ore jigs prove to be an adequate option for further improvements of overall mass yield. With further liberation, a saleable product will be achieved by secondary beneficiation on Fines Jigs and WHIMS.Concluding, jigs are considered the most viable and cost effective benefi ciation process for off-grade ore +0.8 - 32 mm at Beeshoek as well as at Khumani, while WHIMS is the process under consideration for super fines recovery.

The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. Over time, a robust and thorough process has been developed at the Trident Gold Deposit to understand and then successfully mine these complex mineralised systems.CITATION:Sinclair, S, Wilson, B M, Buerger, R J and Turner, B J, 2012. 21 Moorfields is an oversite development in central London spanning Moorgate tube station. It required the installation of both the highest loaded bearing piles and the highest top loaded static pile test ever undertaken in the UK, at 50.5MN (5,680 tons). The 17-storey building is founded on only 15 large diameter bored piles installed through the roof of the live station. The piles are located in two parallel rows 50 m (164 ft) apart, bridging the underlying train lines and the Crossrail tunnel below. This unique project required a diverse cross-section of skills and experience from the Project Team as we not only pushed the boundaries of design but also those of construction practices. Our team therefore needed to be made up of members from multiple businesses and disciplines. The team worked together, in a highly collaborative environment, for around two years before any work started on site. A key challenge for this project was that there was only one opportunity to construct each pile. If a position had to be abandoned there were no alternative locations and the impact on the project would have been catastrophic. It was therefore vital that all events that may have led to the abandonment of a pile were investigated ahead of commencement on site. Risk elimination and mitigation strategies were developed for all eventualities whether they be associated with the design or construction processes. The successful pile load test, coupled with all contract piles being fully instrumented with state-of-theart fiber optic (CemOptic) cable along their full length, has improved our understanding of the performance of such large and heavily loaded piles. The works piles will all be monitored during the construction of the new building, providing new insight into their real-world performance. Such groundbreaking work has never been undertaken before in the UK and has the potential to significantly influence the industry’s understanding of pile behavior, and design, in the future. This paper will discuss the challenges the team encountered during the design and construction of this highly complex urban project, particularly when adopting, by necessity, a pioneering approach.

The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

The American Mining Congress and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have formed a collaborative research team to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive control strategy to reduce diesel particulate matter concentrations without degrading other air quality parameters at an underground noncoal mine. Other participating organizations include Caterpillar, Inc., the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the University of Minnesota. After extensive baseline information and air quality data are collected, available control strategies to reduce diesel particulate matter exposures will be implemented, individually or in combination, and evaluated. This paper discusses the objectives and protocol of the collaborative effort to evaluate diesel particulate control technology.

"In order to accurately detect whether the collision occurs between particle and bubble in flotation process, a collision detection method of particle and bubble, which based on morphological image processing and Otsu method, is presented. First of all, it utilizes image pre-processing to optimize images, the target area and the background area are segmented by Otsu method. Then, particle and bubble are fitted to a circle combined with the least-square method. It’s convenient to obtain the coordinate information and radius. Finally, the position of all particles is extracted to an image, which achieves the particle tracking and avoids the complexity of the continuous frame image tracking.Experimental analysis shows that the relationship between the two ordinate difference d and the bubble radius r has a certain influence on the collision detection when the dripping particles are close to the bubble, when d>r, the detection accuracy is 92%;When d=1/2r, the detection accuracy is 97%;When d=0, the detection accuracy is 100%. The result indicates that this algorithm can detect the collision between particle and bubble quickly, and the working hours of manual test are saved effectively ,the best position of dripping particles close to the bubble which is taken with a CCD camera should be in the range of the particle and bubble’s ordinate difference less than half of the bubble radius.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is an important technical means to separate useful minerals from ores. The flotation process of ores and materials in the world is treated by flotation technology up to billions of tons every year, so the study of flotation process is particularly important. Raising the collision probability between mineral particles and bubbles in flotation process is one of the key factors to improve flotation separation efficiency[1]. The study indicates that[2-4] the collision probability between particles and bubbles is influenced by many factors, such as particle density, particle size bubble size, etc. The analysis of these influential factors requires a lot of experiments. Therefore, it is of great significance to design an accurate collision detection method for the research of this field."

Since the introduction of "boxhole" drilling in South Africa in 1973, the concept of a blind raise, drilled upward from below, has become an accepted mining practice. A combination machine, capable of constructing raises to a mining level below, or blind raising upward from a single setup position adds a further dimension in versatility. A machine with these dual operating modes was designated by The Robbins Company as the 53R and was introduced into the Western Deep Level Mines, South Africa in 1984. The unit is powerful (200 hp) and compact (18,000 lbs., in a 10 ft x 4 ft 5 inch x 4 ft 6 inch package). This paper describes the design considerations for the new machine, provides field data from early trials, and looks briefly at its overall market and potential.

Grouting technologies are ground treatment techniques used for modifying the behaviour of a mass of soil or rock by injecting a mixture. The sleeved port pipes (also called Tube A Manchette) are highly diffused for grouting treatment of coarse soils and fissured rocks. This paper describes a combination of jet grouting and rock grouting with MPSP (multiple packer sleeve pipe) technique that has been used to realize waterproof curtains under fluvial structures for a cascade hydro-power plant. This is composed by five mini hydro-power plants, placed along the Iskar River, in Bulgaria, and composed by a penstock followed by the power house, a spillway, and an earth dam containing the reservoir. The geology of the site is characterized by an upper alluvial deposit lying over the bedrock. In each site, similar treatments were carried out: an impervious curtain along the plant section, obtained by executing jet-grouting columns in the surficial alluvial layers and grouting the underlying fractured rock by means of port pipes. The temporary embankment, built during the works for protecting each site from the possible river floods, has been waterproofed and stabilized by reinforced jet-grouting columns. The grouting processes have been controlled and monitored by a computerized system. INTRODUCTION The Iskar river cascade hydropower plant is situated northern of Sofia, Bulgaria, and it is composed by nine plants. Actually five of them have been built and produce energy. Each plant is composed by a penstock followed by the turbine building, a spillway, and an earth dam that contains the reservoir. The Iskar rivers runs in a narrow valley characterized by diorite or diabase rocks, with an upper deposit of alluvial soil, composed mainly by gravel and sand. Each plant requires an impervious curtain under the structures and in correspondence of the earth dam: this has been obtained by means of a jet grouting treatment of the alluvial coarse soil, and a grouting treatment with cement mixtures of the underlying rock using the MPSP technology. During the construction of the structures, the site has been shielded from the river water by a temporary earth embankment that has been statically improved and waterproofed by jet grouting columns reinforced with steel tubes; this allowed to work without interruption even in case of flood of the Iskar river.

IN a Bolivian tin concentrator an appliance was needed to furnish a suitable product for fine jigging from a pulp of the following composition: Mesh Per Cent. +20 8.0 +40 36.5 +60 9.0 +80 10.5 +100 5.5 +150 4.51 -150 25.0 99.0 Loss 1.0 IN the jigging process, particles of cassiterite as small as 0.1 mm. can be recovered, provided they are not present in excess, that is if the material treated on the jigs contains sufficient coarser sands to keep the interstices between the grains open. Removing the fine material from the pulp by screening, to prepare the jig feed, is impractical, because that means the use of an 80-mesh screen or finer, and is not as effective as hydraulic classification. A screen would eliminate mineral grains from the feed which can be recovered by jigging, and in addition would throw more gangue and low-grade middling on to the jig. Formerly a one-spigot Richards vortex classifier had been used to accomplish this separation, but the tangential openings through which the hydraulic water enters became clogged by fine vegetal matter with which the water was contaminated, and which it was impossible to remove from the water. Consequently the work of the classifier was imperfect and a good deal of slime was sent to the jig. When designing the plant referred to in this paper it was decided to use a hydraulic classifier as shown in Fig. 1. Solving ventilation networks of natural splitting is a basic problem in mine ventilation. Several mathematical techniques are used to solve this problem. This paper proposes a new method which combines the advantages of both classical Hardy Cross method and unconstrained optimization techniques. The trials carried out on model networks have shown that the method offers some facilities in the analysis of mine ventilation networks. A combined size reduction- liberation model of grinding has been developed to predict the product size distribution for both free and locked particles. The model is an extension of the population balance model for size reduction. Locked (or composite) particles have been subdivided into discrete classes of different compositions to obtain more detailed information. The model has been tested on a sphalerite ore from Tennessee. Liberation data have been obtained using an areal scanning technique on microscope images of polished particle mounts.

A viable flow sheet of the sorption-flotation technology for gold recovery from low-grade ores and concentrates using powdered activated carbon modified by organic compounds as the sorbent-bearer has been developed. The powdered activated carbon, with high kinetic ability and sufficient specific area, was selected as the all-purpose gold cyanide complex-bearing sorbent which is active during flotation. To improve carbon adsorption capacity and to provide the required floatability its porous structure was filled with a quaternary ammonium compound which can extract gold cyanide complexes and render additional flotation properties to the carbon. To optimise the process and to simplify the layout, adsorption and flotation processes were carried out simultaneously in a mechanical flotation cell. The proposed technology was used for extended and pilot-plant tests of sorption-flotation gold recovery from 0.6 g/t Au final tailings and 2.0 g/t Au gravity tailings. The extended tests were carried out on Taseevskaya (Chita Region) flotation tailings, whereas pilot-plant tests were conducted on Kommunarovskaya (Krasnoyarsk Region) gravity tailings passing to cyanidation, followed by processing with filtration technology. Additional gold recovery from Taseevskaya final flotation tailings was 50.8 per cent. Gold recovery from Kommunarovskaya final gravity tailings was 92.5 per cent. Compared to the complete sludge process conventionally used at the plant, gold recovery was increased by 7.5 per cent due to lower gold losses in the liquid phase and conversion of the refractory non-cyanided metal into a carbon concentrate. This paper presents the experimental results of gold adsorption onto powdered activated carbon modified with quaternary ammonium compounds (sorbent-bearer) as well as sorbent-bearer flotation with various collectors from cyanide solutions and pulps.

"INTRODUCTION This paper addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of Coal Exploration Results, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or “saleable” tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal – therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (“ROM”) and Saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information. Competent or Qualified Persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provide. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their Public Reports, which is as comprehensive as possible” (CRIRSCO, 2013): too often this isn’t the case and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed. According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document - “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw Saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the Saleable Coal Reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” As an example to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are highlighted. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a Calorific Value (“CV”) range of 19 to 20MJ/kg, an Ash content between 29 and 34% and Volatiles between 20 to 21%. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities such as a CV range of 22 to 23MJ/kg, an Ash content between 20 and 28% and Volatiles between 22 to 23%. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it isn’t just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station” (Chetty, 2010). Sulphur content is also another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1% Sulphur."
