A process has been developed for the successful hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The extracted copper in the form of a salt is converted by reduction to copper metal. Purification of the metal is described which includes a description of the casting of ETP quality copper wire bars.

The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. Land Use: Growth vs No Growth This is perhaps the most encompassing environmental issue. We, as a nation, are beginning to realize that land is a limited natural resource and that the way we choose to use 'this resource affects many other aspects of our lives--whether we can catch edible fish in the Mississippi, how much we pay for sewer services, if we can swim in a

The coal companies of today have to make all of their in-the-field managers MAINTENANCE PRODUCTION MANAGERS. By using a computer application to monitor all aspects of the daily production as well as the maintenance, a company can immediately effect a cost reduction by studying the down-time and delay trends on an everyday basis. This paper will outline how a company can use a program to not only put a stop to the increasing supply and maintenance costs but start trimming each of these cost centers while actually increasing the efficiency and productivity of the current work force.

Iran possesses very large copper resources, estimated to contain around 4-5% of the world's known copper inventory. There are several small private sector copper mining operating in the country, but Iran's copper industry is dominated by the state-owned National Iranian Copper Industries Company, which operates the world-class Sar-Cheshmeh open-pit Mine. This mine was developed in 1970s before the 1979 Islamic Revelation by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the former Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Current Iran?s copper cathode production is about 250,000 mtpa and recently it is targeted to reach to 700.000 t by 2014. The required finance for this target is estimated US $2.25 -b, i.e. US $5000 for each tonne capacity. The copper content of the mineable reserves of the country is estimated about 19 Mt. It is not unlikely this amount increases in close future. Currently, almost 30 projects consist of mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery, acid plant, leaching, bio-leaching are underway. These projects are a golden opportunity for the local and foreign companies, but the recent sanctions are very challenging that all studied in this paper.

Shaft alignment requirements are consistently met using conventional shaft sinking methods. Little attention has been given to achieving similar alignment accuracies using rotary drilled shaft methods. Alignment of these shafts is difficult to control and guarantee. Bare shafts and shafts that use drum hoisting systems can accept some deviation. However, combining drilled shafts with Koepe hoist installations presents new accuracy requirements for drilled shafts. This paper describes the importance of verticality with practical examples, and discusses various methods of measuring verticality and their respective limitations.

Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports which can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the United States has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems' effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a Distinct Element Method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. "In the application of the BIOX® technology, high tailings grade (2-16 g/t) may be generated with a decrease in overall gold recovery, which sometimes make it economically unattractive. This paper investigated the causes of the high tailings grade by using samples from the Bogoso BIOX plant. Partial chemical analysis, diagnostic tests and cyanidation optimisation studies were conducted to invoke understanding into the high tailings grades. Diagnostic study on the tailings showed 48.34% of gold in carbonaceous matter, 17.12% in quartz, 13.40% as liberated gold, 11.51% imbedded in sulphides and the remaining 9.65% in carbonates. Optimum cyanidation recovery of 90.4% was established for the BIOX concentrate at 7 kg/t NaCN, 40-50 g/L activated carbon and residence time of 40 hours. The recovery was sensitive to carbon and cyanide concentrations but additional cyanide was not economical. High preg-robbing indices of 72.7% and 64.4% were recorded for the BIOX product and the flotation concentrate respectively. This confirms the inability of the BIOX process to deactivate carbonaceous matter, which remains a serious precursor for low overall gold recoveries and high CIL tailings. INTRODUCTION Gold ores may be broadly classified as refractory and non-refractory. Non-refractory ores are easy to treat but refractory materials require complicated flowsheets for metal extraction (Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001; Marsden and House, 2006). As near surface non-refractory gold deposits are getting depleted, the increasing price of gold and increasing demand for gold, have encouraged many gold producing companies to treat refractory ores for gold recovery. The refractory behaviour of these ores may be due to the presence of sulphides, tellurides, cyanicides and/or carbonaceous matter. Refractory ores do not respond well to conventional cyanidation as the gold is either occluded by or in solid solution in sulphides, or is in association with cyanicides (Marsden and House, 2006). Further, carbonaceous matter preg-robs gold during leaching (Osseo-Asare et al, 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001). The two major causes of refractoriness are the presence of sulphides and carbonaceous matter, and these render the ore double refractory (Nyavor and Egiebor, 1992). Oxidative pre-treatment processes such as high pressure leaching/oxidation; biological oxidation, ultra-fine grinding and roasting are required to render refractory ores amenable to conventional cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). Biological oxidation, however, has become the preferred pre-treatment route because it is more environmentally friendly and convenient even where only partial oxidation is required. Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can achieve the same or better results than roasting or pressure leaching in terms of gold recovery (Yannopoulos, 1991; Brierley, 1997). Further, biological treatment processes are more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safer."

A digital computer program has been developed to mathematically simulate the effect of limited changes in feed rate on the grinding circuit of an operating mill. The data on which the program is based was supplied by the staff of the mill in question. Samples taken around the complete grinding circuit were analyzed for solids content and particle size distribution for two feed rates. Matrix models were used to represent the grinding units: rod mill and pebble mills. Parameters for these models were computed using a method developed by Mular(l). Classifier parameters were computed by the Powell search method(2) for the Plitt model (3) . The simulation program, which permits the computing of the size distributions in the circuit resulting from the changes in feed rate between the two measured values, assumes that a linear relationship exists between the corresponding parameter coefficients. The program uses an iteration method to bring the simulated grinding circuit to a steady-state material balance for any specified' feed rate between those measured. The program is, in addition, extremely fast and economic in computing time. The results show that the simulations are not everywhere consistent with practice. For example, higher feed rates on simulation predict finer products. These errors are shown to be attributable to anomalies in data gathering techniques. I have been asked to talk to you this morning about phosphate marketing and distribution. In discussing this I will attempt to answer such questions as: What is phosphate? Where do we get it? What form is it and how do we sell it? How do we distribute it? How is it applied? And last, but not least, What about the future? To start with, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients. It is the element essential for root structure of plants. Plants, like humans, need a balanced diet. Thus, the amount of phosphate required by individual plants is, in part, related to how much of the other nutrients are used. Virtually all soils contain a certain amount of available phosphates. Back at the turn of the century the most common source of additional plant nutrient, including phosphates, was from cattle manure. The use of chemical fertilizers is something that has grown significantly during the last half century, and in particular, the last 20 years.

Once mining compromises the stability of a rock mass, the dangerous task of roof bolting begins. Many attempts have been made to automate this process, but there are still many refinements that need to be made. In the past, roof bolting modules were designed around the abilities of a human operator. Currently, researchers are taking a new approach that focuses on designing modules that can utilize bolting methods that are easily automated. A non-rotating anchor that is locked into position by a linear force (as opposed to a rotational force) was designed by researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Once the bolt is secured in the bolt-hole by the anchor, the bolt is tensioned and a collet is used to secure the other end of the bolt. This process replaces the traditional bolt-nut fastening method. This program is part of an effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to automate the coal mining process.

Pursuant to the Federal Surface Mining Act of 1977 and the Illinois Surface Mining Act of 1980, Illinois has adopted revegetation success standard regulations that include the Agricultural Land Productivity Formula. The Formula establishes yield goals and standards to measure the success of meeting yield goals for reclaimed prime farmlands. The formula compares the quality of the pre-mining soils in the permit area and the county, to the crop production achieved on the reclaimed permit area and the county crop yield in a given crop year. The regulations also specify acceptable crops, erosion control requirements and time frames for demonstrating success.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the manufactured product. Clearly, the engineer who is responsible for selecting a mode of transport must base his decision, at least in large measure, on economic comparisons. And today, the engineer usually finds that he has to choose between several modes, including slurry pipelines. For the purpose of an initial economic screening, it is not necessary to go deeply into the technical details of a slurry system. What is usually needed, however, is a method with which the engineer can make a quick economic assessment to determine whether a slurry pipeline should be included in the detailed final analysis. This paper presents a rapid method for making such a preliminary appraisal. Experience with commercial slurry pipeline systems in several countries and with a variety of solid materials has shown that if several assumptions pertaining to critical design variables are made, it is possible to roughly estimate the transportation cost of a slurry system on the basis of only three factors: the specific gravity of the solid material, the length of the system, and the quantity of slurry to be pumped each year. It is assumed that conditions pertaining to field construction, corrosion inhibition, and the like, will be favorable. This assumption is critical because any factor which analysis shows to be particularly unfavorable will raise the total transportation cost estimate which this paper establishes. If the engineer employs this estimating procedure and decides that the use of a slurry pipeline is economically unattractive, his chances of being wrong are small. Conversely, if his quick appraisal indicates that the use of a slurry system is economically favorable, the engineer is justified in committing the time and money needed to make a more detailed investigation of the slurry pipeline potential.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. (Figure No. 1 illustrates this model.)

Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible' lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such Working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31,1970 a notice of proposed ru1emaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working p1 aces of underground coal mines. In 1ight of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed ru1emaking, the proposed standards were with-drawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974 and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976 which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed ru1emaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27, 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination; Conso1 felt that expertise in this field would become increasingly important. Conso1's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigati.ng practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage.

Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

Sometimes in assessing where we are and where we are going it is informative to take a look at where we have been. Whether or not it adds to our understanding of the present, I think it may be interesting to review some of the past history of our industry. As a starting point I chose to use the famous Paley Commission Report, formally known as "The U. S. President's materials Policy Commission -Resources for Freedom."(l) The Paley Commission report said "Fluorspar is an essential raw material for the steel, aluminum, and chemical industries." Of course this statement is still true. It also said, "United States known reserves of fluorspar would be sufficient for some 15 years at present rates of consumption--about 426 000 short tons in 1960. Projected consumption for 1975, however, is several times as great, and reserves in other free countries do not appear adequate to supply United States deficiencies during the next 25 years." This simply demonstrates how even the most learned and competent people can observe all the facts avail-able to them at a given time and yet be unable to predict the future very accurately. We all know that reserves in other countries are more than adequate to supply the United States today, 25 years since the report was published. In fact, the report estimated free-world reserves at something over 36 million tonnes (40 million short tons). Contrast this with 246 million tonnes (271 million short tons) estimated as total world reserves from the section on fluorspar from Commodity Data Summaries of 1974, published by the Department of the Interior. (2) The Paley Report discusses other matters pertaining to fluorspar that are still of interest, such as improving mining methods. Furthermore, it certainly did a good forecasting job in noting that greater recycling should become possible in the aluminum industry in regard to fluorine lost in wastes and also concerning the substitution of fluorspar in the steel industry by other fluxing materials. It also suggested that non-fluorine containing propellants should be investigated as a replacement of those containing fluorine as a conservation matter. Some discussion was devoted to recovering the fluorine content of phosphate rock, which is being practiced today, but was in its infancy in 1950.

In opening, I want to thank the program committee and members of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME for the opportunity to speak to you. Various chapters of AIME this past year have expressed interest in the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act. We want to see that interest continue, because the reason for the legislation was the safety and health of the industry's workforce. The Department of the Interior was directed by the Congress to administer the provisions of the Act and is therefore held directly accountable for the success or failure of its intent. We intend to see it succeed. Among other things, the Act does provide for education and training under Section 15. This provision has been implemented and is expanding. However, the responsibility of my office is inspection and enforcement and that is my subject today.

Constructed by stonemasons over 120 years ago, a portion of the Trout Brook Storm Sewer Interceptor (TBI) owned and operated by the Capitol Region Watershed District in Saint Paul, Minnesota, needed rehabilitation. A routine inspection of the 10-foot limestone block tunnel revealed degraded and missing mortar between the blocks, allowing significant infiltration and soil migration through the tunnel joints. Conditions, including damaged and missing blocks, were considerably worse in a 250-foot-long segment beneath a busy mainline railroad corridor. Barr’s solution included tuck-pointing to repair the mortar joints, shotcrete overlay, and construction of a hybrid cast-in-place/shotcrete “tunnel within a tunnel” to support the mainline railroad loads.

INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution.
