Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of chemical additives and metal ions present either added or present as contaminants, on the flotation. Fuerstenau and Palmer (1976) have studied in detail the adsorption of multivalent cations onto oxide and silicate minerals. It was observed that the adsorption of a multivalent metal species exhibits a sharp pH dependence which is related to the formation of hydroxy complexes of the metal ions in solution. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration, namely, nitrogen, air and oxygen on ball war was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. 'Marked ball grinding, tests along with electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen towards wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry-appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

Three different refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Carlin operation in northeastern Nevada were investigated to characterize the effect of passivation treatments on the nature of the carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material was chemically isolated from the ores and passivated residues, and examined by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and gold adsorption capacity. The main component of the carbonaceous material in these ores was found to be a naturally occurring activated carbon-type compound. Hydro-carbons were detected on rare occasions, but no evidence was seen for humic acids. Ore samples were passivated by autoclaving, or by treatment with sodium hypochlorite or gaseous Chlorine. In some of the passivation tests, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra of the isolated carbonaceous material, that was due to carbonyl functionalities. However, all of the passivation treatments tested decreased preg robbing significantly. This suggested that the appearance of the carbonyl peak was due to the severity of the conditions during passivation, rather than the method used.

In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

Editor&apos;s note: Minerals concentration is a disparate area, one involving many disciplines. Flotation, flocculation, reagents, microbial processes, gravity and magnetic separation, and the areas of coal and oil shale - concentration is relevant to all of these. In his article, Nagaraj reviews the latest developments and findings in concentration that have ocurred during the past year. Flotation The Monograph Series "Development in Mineral Processing," (Elsevier, 1985) was devoted to "Flotation of Sulfide Minerals." This volume has 26 articles covering the aspects of flotation chemistry, process development, plant design and equipment, and modeling and process control. The numerous articles on sulfide flotation had one recurring theme - the role of electrochemical processes and redox potentials in flotation and depression. Significant advances have been made in this area. A differential desorption-reflotation process was developed for the beneficiation of calcitic phosphate pebble (Hsieh and Lehr, Industrial Engineering and Chemistry, 1985). The carbonate and phosphate minerals were first separated from silica using fatty acid and the modifiers diphosphonic acid and HF. The collector on phosphate was then desorbed using sulfuric acid, and calcite was selectively floated without additional collector. A two-stage conditioning - initially at pH 10, followed by that at pH < 4.5 - with sodium oleate was developed to improve the separation between apatite and dolomite (Moudgil and Chanchani, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, MMP, 1985). Separation of Mussorie rock phosphate in India from gangue calcite, dolomite, silicates, pyrite, and carbonaceous impurities was achieved with a three-stage flotation only on -75 µm (-200 mesh) fraction (Vaman Rao et al., International Journal of Mineral Processing, IJMP, 1985). The separation of fine SiC whiskers from other products of coked rice hulls by immiscible liquid and froth flotation was achieved using M1BC, pine oil, and mineral spirits (Parekh and Goldberger, MMP, 1985). Flotation was more economical. The carrier flotation separation of hematite fines from quartz fines was effected using coarse hematite as a carrier and oleic acid and ferric chloride (Cristoveanu and Meech, CIM Bulletin, 1985). Potash recovery from brines by laboratory-pan solar evaporation and amine flotation was discussed by Foot and Juiatt (Salts and Brines &apos;85, Proceedings, 1985). Flotation in a 45-kg/h (99-lb per hour) unit recovered more than 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates containing 28% and 62% K2O, respectively. The effects of fresh concrete into cement and aggregate by a single-step flotation process in aqueous suspension was described (Naegle, Chemical Engineering Science, 1985). The physico-chemical principles for the selective separation of proteins from mixtures using flotation were discussed by Ostermaier and Dobias (Colloids & Surfactants, 1985). Selective flocculation of hematite from silica was studied by Bagster and Mcllvenny (IJMP, 1985). Selective flocculation was more favorable with more highly charged anionic polyacrylamides and with high molecular weight. The cationic and non-ionic polymers flocculated both minerals. In minerals mixtures, there appeared to be very little selectivity unless a combination of dispersant and electrolyte was used. The effect of dissolved minerals species, such as Cu, Fe, and Ni on flocculation of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite, and covellite was studied by Acar and Somasundaran (SME-AIME, 1985). Reagents There were some major advances made in reagent development for the minerals processing industry. Cyanamid introduced several classes of collectors, one of which - the diaryl monothiophosphates as acid circuit col¬lectors of sulfides and oxidesulfide ores - was commercialized in 1985. The monothiophosphates are more stable and powerful collectors than the xanthates and dithiophosphates. Hydrolyzed dithiophosphate containing 80% monothio and 20% dithiophosphate was found to give optimum recovery of copper from crude cementation precipitate and separation of Cu and Ni sulfides from matte (Akimova et al., Obogashch, Tonkov, Rud, OTR, 1985). INTRODUCTION An innovative Ø.1-MGD (378.5-m3/day) biological and phyicochemical wastewater treatment system at Hancock, Massachusetts, USA, has been treating the domestic sewage generated from the four-season Jiminy Peak timeshare resort since 1985. The influent raw sewage is collected and equalized in an equalization tank, then biologically treated by two rotating biological contactors (RBC). A portion of the RBC effluent is discharged to a secondary sedimentation tank to simulate conventional waste treatment by a conventional RBC system. For parallel treatment the remaining portion of the RBC effluent is discharged to an innovative Sandfloat (SASF-8) clarifier to simulate a two-stage biological and physicochemical treatment by RBC-Sandfloat. Both secondary sedimentation effluent and Saandfloat effluent are later combined together and discharged to a tertiary sand filter and two UV disinfection&apos;units for final polishing. The operation and performance data of Jiminy Peak plant in the period of May 1985 to March 1988 was fully documented in the Lenox Institute technical report No. LIR/Ø3-88/292 (391 pages, March 1988). This report presents only background information and complete plant data in the period of April 1988 to January 1989. Dr. Lawrence K. Wang and Mr. James P. Van Dyke have been the Consulting Engineer and Director of Special Projects, respectively, for the Jiminy Peak Project since 1985. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Jimmy Peak, Inc., Hancock, Massachusetts, has designed and constructed a secondary wastewater treatment system consisting of preliminary/primary treatment facilities, two rotating biological contactors, a dissolved air flotation clarifier, a secondary sedimentation clarifier, a sand filter and two ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units. Total average wastewater flow is approximately Ø.1 ) (378.5 cubic meters per day). In accordance with the Consulting Engineer&apos;s preliminary design, the total wastewater stream is initially collected and equalized by an equalization tank, and then biologically treated by rotating biological contactors (RBC). Part of the RBC effluent is diverted to a Krofta Sandfloat (SASF-8) for physicochemical clarification in order to simulate an innovative RBC-Sandfloat two-stage waste treatment system. The remaining part of the RBC effluent is diverted to a sedimentation tank for secondary clarification in order to siumulate a conventional secondary RBC-sedimentation waste treatment system for the purpose of parallel comparison. Both Sandfloat effluent and sedimentation effluent are later combined together and discharged to the subsequent sand filter and UV disinfection unit for final polishing. Figure 1 shows the flow diagram of Jiminy Peak Plant. The Massachusetts Clean Waters Act (M.G.L.c.2l,s.26-53) was amended by Chapter 246 of the Acts of 1973 to authorize the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality Engineering (DEQE), Division of water Pollution Control, Boston, Massachusetts, to regulate discharges into all waters of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including groundwaters. The DEQE regulates discharges through the issuance of discharge permits which impose limitations on the amount of pollutants which may be discharged in the effluent, together with monitoring and reporting requirements and other conditions to insure adequate treatment of all liquid wastes prior to discharge. The DEQE reviewed the application submitted on behalf of Jiminy Peak, Inc. for a permit to discharge sanitary wastes from the Jiminy Peak secondary wastewater treatment system located off Brodie Mountain Road, Hancock, Massachusetts, and subsequently developed the conditions contained in the Groundwater Discharge Permit No. Ø-188. More specifically, Jiminy Peak, Inc. (i.e. the permittee) has been authorized to discharge into the ground from the Jimmy Peak secondary wastewater treatment facilities for which the Permit No. Ø-188 was issued, a treated effluent

This paper is concerned with the problem of calculating ground movement that occurs as a consequence of mining. Solution to this problem is straight forward in principle but rather complex in practice. The complexities of the problem arise from the ever present constraints of technology and economics. However, the identity of these constraints is often obscured by a faulty understanding of the fundamentals of the problem and a lack of appreciation of current computational capabilities and costs. As a consequence much time and effort are sometimes wasted on gathering information that is of little direct value to ground control programs while important input data are neglected. This paper therefore reviews the essentials of the process of formulating the ground movement problem. Emphasis is upon application to longwall mining, although much of the discussion applies to other mining methods as well. In many instances, the hardrock term stope could be substituted for longwall panel because the fundamentals of the problem are independent of the excavation dimensions and numerical values of rock properties. The latter affect the outcome of a calculation, of course, but not the underlying formulation. Only the major features of the problem are discussed in this brief review. The objective of the discussion is the generation of a reliable basis for developing a technically sound ground control strategy. Any rational ground control strategy must be consistent with basic physical laws. For example, under static conditions, equations of equilibrium must be satisfied. Operational, that is, tactical, details may vary widely with local conditions, but the basic approach must be based on physical laws. The alternative empirical route is intrinsically unreliable and unnecessary as well. Empirical descriptions of ground motion caused by mining including recent statistical curve fits to specialized data sets (for example, surface subsidence data) as well as antiquated "theories" of ground pressure and so forth, however dignified with mathematical formulas, are hardly worthy of the label "theory". Extrapolation of statistical data is always accompanied by rapidly diverging confidence limits, while empirical equations simply lack predictive capability under circumstances even slightly different from those of the original development. For example, applications of surface subsidence curves generated empirically in the United Kingdom to coal mines in the United States generally result in considerably greater subsidence and wider subsidence troughs than actually observed. Locally, empirical criteria for specific ground control actions may be made practical through trial and error, but such tactics are no basis for the development of a general ground control strategy. In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall the traditional scientific distinctions between speculation, hypothesis and law, between the empirical and the proven.

Research methods to develop an economic model for the determination of regional mineral advantage are discussed. An industrial complex conceptual framework is used to study potential mineral resource outputs of Kansas. A procedure for making a comparative cost analysis of potential outputs for a Kansas-based industrial complex is outlined and illustrated. Methods for estimating aggregate demand and for developing an input-output matrix for a hypothetical limestone complex are explained. The input-output matrix is expressed in physical units. A computer algorithm for converting physical production data and input cost data into total cost per unit of output information is briefly explained and flowcharted. Limitations and usefulness of this procedure in determining regional advantages are surveyed.

Henderson Mine’s primary production transitioned from the main portion of the 7700 level to the 7210 main panel in 2005. On the 7700 level, the southwest (SW) panel was brought into production in 2014 and produced through 2020. A-Panel was brought online in 2019 and took over primary production in 2020. The 7210 north panel is under development with production expected to commence in 2025. The 7700 northwest panel is expected to be the mine’s last production panel.

"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

"The case for innovation in the mining industry has never been more compelling—whether you believe the industry is in a sharp dip in a significant ‘sawtooth’ cycle or in the midst of a bust — the imperative is the same. Despite record production levels and still above-average prices compared to the lows of 2000, the industry is struggling to make profits and provide the returns on capital that investors are seeking. This represents a large-scale destruction of value over the last 15 years.The last 10 years have seen a sustained rise of operation expenses and capital development costs while there has been a rapid decline in productivity. This trend is unsustainable especially against other key structural challenges and forces shaping the future of the industry:1. Despite short-term fluctuations, there is longterm sustained demand for commodities.• Demand is driven by relentless urbanization, population growth and a rapidly growing middle class.2. Environmental concerns continue to mount.• Existing mining methods and their environmental footprint are becoming increasingly unacceptable to society.3. Geopolitical pressures and community activism are growing.• An estimated $25 billion worth of projects are on hold due to community activism.• Increasing nationalism tendencies and government expropriations of close to $30 billion.• Social license to operate is being challenged.4. Finding, building, operating and closing a mine just keeps getting harder and more expensive.• Costs have been increasing at an annual rate of 10 to 15 percent for the last 10 years.• More assets are stranded as they become uneconomical to mine under current mining methods, e.g. Olympic Dam.• Ore grades continue to decline.• Declining productivity at an annual rate of more than 10 percent for the last 10 years.5. Simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments on a pyritic ore from Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, were carried out. Mineral characterization, agitated leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic tests results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted in a temperature range of 40 to 80 °C, an oxygen pressure range of 87.5 to 200 psi, and cyanide concentration range of 0.8 to 1.2 weight percent in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. Dissolution rates of 81 to 86 percent were achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 weight percent NaCN and processing time of one hour.

A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical when responding to a fire incident, as an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring fire contaminants, such as toxic gases and smoke, unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been developed by researchers and scholars around the world. However, those proposed methods rely heavily on a vast number of mine ventilation simulations, which is time-consuming and computer-resource intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this study, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation is developed and implemented into the MFIRE mine fire simulation software. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method is proved to be reliable and accurate.

Tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) are extracted from many different ore types. The major economic orebody mined for tantalum and niobium consists of tantalite ((FeMn)Ta2O5) and columbite ((FeMnNb2O5)) in a solid-solution mineral commonly referred to as “coltan.” The largest supplying region, The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is unfortunately also the most ethically compromised source for this critical mineral. Officially, the U.S. government has deemed coltan ore from the DRC a “conflict mineral” [1]. The lack of pragmatic and effective local mining regulation in Central Africa, when coupled with high levels of violence and corruption, has spawned a widespread, illegal, unethical and, most importantly, unsafe economy. This illicit economy is centered around first, illegally mining these valuable conflict minerals and second, smuggling these minerals into the global supply chain. Handheld spectroscopy devices could provide further transparency to these opaque supply chains, giving miners, traders and refiners the ability to authenticate the provenance of the minerals they encounter, and allowing companies to prove compliance with the regulatory agencies attempting to curtail illicit mining.

The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

This study aims to investigate the reduction thermodynamics of ilmenite and pre-oxidized ilmenite, and reveals the isothermal reduction kinetics of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate by carbon monoxide. The results indicate that the ilmenite concentrate and pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate can be selectively reduced by controlling the temperature. The pre-oxidation process leads to the breakage of complex mineral structure, and the formation of porous simple oxides, which is an effective method to increase the reduction and leaching rate.

Ventilation monitoring and control in mines are becoming an integral part of day-to-day activity for maintaining the health and safety of miners. This paper evaluates potential real-time monitoring solutions for detecting and reducing diesel particulate matter (DPM), mine fires and dust in situ and examines the state-of-the-art use of ventilation monitoring and control in underground mines for detecting and reducing air contaminants to acceptable regulatory limits. In this study, relevant documents, including research papers, trade publications and manufacturer website information, are reviewed to identify research gaps. This paper also includes evaluations of contemporary sensors (airflow, gas, dust and silica), control system and software technologies, data transport systems, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), ventilation network simulators and control devices to identify potential health and safety research gaps. Examples of some mines in Canada, Australia and the United States that have been using ventilation monitoring and controls are included as well. Overall, this review identifies multiple challenges and research gaps in applying mine monitoring and control systems that could be the focus of future research, offering potential improvements to miner safety and health and financial benefits.

Researchers are exploring the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to measure concentrations of gas emissions in situations where such measurements are otherwise extremely difficult to obtain, such as NO and NO2 (NOx) emissions from surface mine blasting. Recently, countries have imposed or are planning to impose surface blasting gas pollution regulations, which creates a need for an improved understanding of UAV-based gas measuring systems. The experiments detailed in this paper were performed to determine if airflow generated by the rotors, also known as downwash, unnaturally alters concentration measurements. Downwash turbulence could create locations of varying pressure, which could affect density-based concentrations as measured by some governing entities, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
