In relating geology and mineral resources to the nongeologist engaged in planning and zoning, a major hurdle to overcome is often the concept of natural resources. Statements listing such "resources" generally include and often may he limited to such items as "open space", "buildings of historical value", "forest and wilderness areas", and "sites of natural beauty" but seldom mention minerals even where they are of significant economic importance to the area. Unfortunately, mention of mineral resources is often limited to statements calling for tight controls on mining to prevent "ravaging of the land". While, the concept of sequential use involving mining is sometimes acknowledged, it is frequently done in such a manner that this approach is discouraged. In the conflict for land between urban development, recreational open space and mineral extraction, far too often the mineral industry will be the loser. In Missouri, there have long been continuing requests for geologic and resource data for planning purposes from city and county government and from Federal agencies for inclusion in the various river basin studies and Soil Conservation Service projects. These reports vary in detail from concise statements of the geology of an area to rather lengthy reports on mineral and water resources, bed rock and engineering geology characteristics. In most cases, these reports as written were directed to a geologically-oriented reader. Our initial approach to presenting geologic data to the land-use planner was in the area of engineering geology with attempts to show the limitations that bedrock and soil conditions can place on development. The Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is designed to monitor shield pressures in real-time from longwall faces and to provide on-line information related to underground strata behavior and longwall mining operation. The information includes shield pressure data with statistical analysis of setting, developing and final pressures, prediction of shield pressures for the following shift or day, etc. and maintenance data on the shields. The LoSCoMS has been installed and tested at Shoal Creek Mine operated by Drummond Company, Inc. The system is providing valuable information to mine operators for better understanding of underground behaviors. As a result, it has become an effective tool for minimizing ground control hazards and reducing out of seam material.

The setting of tasks for the process control of coal cleaning, and in this connection the requirements for instrumentation can be classified into the following three fields: - Monitoring the operation of individual units, or process steps, - Control of units or process steps, - Control of the entire coal cleaning process with the intention of optimizing the operation and the profitability of the process. Instrumentation is affected by the type of cleaning processes. For introduction Figure 1 shows the simplified flow sheet of coal preparation which is usual in the German Ruhr District and in which desirable places for the measurement of ash, moisture and sulfur content are marked. The preparation plant is supplied with run-of-mine coal from the shaft via a homogenization facility. In a first step of primary classifying the raw feed coal is screened at about 10 mm. The raw coarse coal ( = 10 mm) is sorted by jig washers or heavy-medium separators. the raw fine coal (< 10 mm) at first is pneumatically sized at about 0.5 to 0.75 mm. The fines, the aspirated dust, are a finished partial product which will be added to the final metallurgical or steam coal. The material 10 to 0.75 mm subsequently is sorted in fine coal jigs and dewatered in centrifuges. The sludge obtained with the wet cleaning processes is dewatered in thickeners and fed to the flotation. Concentrate and tailings are dewatered by filters or bowl centrifuges and by chamber filter presses or belt filter presses, respectively. The partial products coarse coal, fine coal, flotation concentrate, aspirated dust, and middlings are blended to result in the sellable products metallurgical and steam coal.

Conventional and advanced coal preparation technologies were investigated through both a literature search and through direct contact with investigators and developers. In addition to a brief description of each process, performance characteristics including feedstock type, ash and sulfur reduction, thermal energy recovery and cost are provided in a tabular form. Seven of the most commonly utilized conventional coal preparation processes, including those respectively accepting coarse, intermediate and fine coal feed, were reviewed. It was found that certain properly implemented and well maintained conventional processes were capable of better than 75 percent ash removal while recovering 90 percent or more of the inherent thermal energy. Almost 50 advanced coal preparation processes were investigated based on biological, chemical and physical principles. Physical processes investigated included cycloning, homogeneous heavy media, electrostatic, high gradient magnetic, flotation and selective coalescence. Using pulverized coal as a feedstock, some of these processes are respectively reported to be capable of removing better than 95 percent ash. 95 percent pyritic sulfur, and 50 percent organic sulfur while incurring energy losses of less than 5 percent.

Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator&apos;s position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program which was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied using small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of the delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of the delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth and amount of detonating cord and cover.

According to accident statistics (l, 2), roof fall accidents occur quite frequently at the intersections of underground? openings and account for up to 30% of the roof fall fatalities. But this figure will certainly go up considerably if roof falls not associated with any fatal accident are included in the analysis. Unfortunately, nonfatal roof falls are seldom documented. In the underground coal mines, there are two types of entry intersections. One is the three-way (V type) and the other is the four-way (T type) intersections. A three-way intersection occurs whenever the mainline track haulageway turns at an angle into a section haulageway. The four-way intersections by far the most common type in the U.S. under-ground coal mines are formed by the intersections of two entries which are oriented perpendicular to each other or by the intersections of entries and crosscuts. However, crosscuts are frequently driven at an angle to the entry to facilitate machine movements. The four-way intersections formed by this method of crosscut development are angled. At the intersection of two underground openings, the diagonal roof span is wider than the width of each individual opening. This is one of the major reasons why roof falls occur more likely at the intersections than in the entry between pillars. Consequently, special intersection support plans are usually employed (Figs. 1 and 2) for intersections. The most popular practices are to decrease roof bolt spacing 1 ft. less than or to increase roof bolt length 1 to 2 ft. longer than those employed in the entry between pillars (3). The increase in bolt length or decrease in bolt spacing can be applied to all of the bolts in the intersection or employed only for the strategically located bolts depending on the individual mine practices. These rather generalized practices seems to be adequate for some areas but in many cases inadequate for others. Occasionally, the neighboring two lines of chain pillars are staggered such that the crosscuts in one row of chain pillars face the centers of the chain pillars in the neigh-boring rows. This layout forms T-type three-way intersections which are also inadequate for most weak roofs (3, 4). A study was therefore initiated to develop special techniques for intersection supports. The first phase of the study was the analysis of the stress fields for the underground entry intersections. A three-dimensional stress analysis was necessary for this purpose. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional problems of complicated boundary conditions are beyond the existing analytical methods. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was therefore employed in this study. In the analysis, square pillars of 40 feet wide and an entry height of 8 feet were assumed while entry widths varied at 14, 20 and 26 feet. This model was selected to simulate the mine where roof falls data were collected. The second phase of the study was the collection of field data. The sizes of the roof falls including heights, lengths and widths were collected and analyzed. In the third phase study, the results of the first and second phases were compared and discussed. The analysis of field data revealed an arching zone within which roof falls occurred. The arching zone above an entry obtained empirically was compared with the calculated stress contours. Assuming that the bolts must be anchored in the rock strata outside the arching zone, the preferable systems of bolting were proposed. Also the amount of pretension required to inhibit sliding between layers was discussed.

The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

The wide use of bulk ANFO in surface coal mines is questionable in our energy conscious environment. At many locations, bulk ANFO is not the proper economic selection. Water conditions, energy requirements, waste and spillage, and vibration control are factors too often overlooked in the proper choice of blasting agents. Cost savings over 20% have been realized by converting bulk ANFO to packaged blasting agents. Future trends suggest greater concern for energy conservation in blasting will limit bulk ANFO applications and promote packaged products where quality can be maximized, waste and spillage eliminated, and water compatibility in wet areas assured.

An example of market development is described. The market in rail-lake movement of coal is vital to a rail carrier because of its location. This market is threatened by nuclear and other competing fuel sources and by depressed all-rail unit train rates, The first step to develop the rail-lake transportation market consists of rate adjustments and tariff changes to force tighter scheduling of mines, railroad, port and boats, and thus reduce cost. The second step provides a surge pile at the port to eliminate most of the seasonal disadvantage of rail-lake movement and reduce car detention at the port to almost zero.

Data on sulfonate adsorption by silicate minerals are very scarce in the literatures. Perhaps the only comprehensive paper written on the topic was done by Fuerstenau and Bhappu (1); this work dealt exclusively with quartz but included many important suggestions as to the form and nature of the hydroxy-sulfonate species of some cations formed during the conditioning step and their effect on the flotation response of quartz. Another paper by the same authors (2) contains additional data on the role of hydrolysis in sulfonate flotation of beryl. As postulated by Fuerstenau and Bhappu, a solid form of cationic sulfonate functions as the collecting species to produce flotation of quartz and beryl. According to the authors, the solid compound is a hydroxy-sulfonate of a given cation, where the hydrogen of the hydroxyl part provides a means for bonding of the species to the mineral surface; thus, the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance to produce flotation. Although the preceding examples illustrate the effect of a sulfonate collector in silicate systems other than plagioclases, they are important as examples of processes of hydroxy-sulfonate complex formation. Since the plagioclase minerals con¬tain Ca(II) and Al(III) cations, which are very reactive in sulfonate media (1), the formation of hydroxy-sulfonate compounds with these cations released from the solid phase may well prove to be the cause for their flotation.

An overland belt conveyor system is installed for only one reason to save money. It must pay its way on a ton-mile basis over a stated period of time, and do so in competition with other forms of transportation. Such a system with its economies has recently been installed at Simco-Peabody&apos;s mine near Coshocton, Ohio by Link-Belt Company. Three miles in length, this system carries coal from open pit and underground mining facilities to the Conesville Power Plant of Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company. The coal was formerly trucked from the mine direct to the power plant; but over the years the mining operations have moved progressively farther and farther from the plant, making the over-the-road hauling distance correspondingly greater. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. The majority of the coal is recovered by conventional strip mining. Some underground mining` is performed by the high wall method.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd&apos;) rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco&apos;s total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World&apos;s copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata&apos;s known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. To maintain metal production at cur¬rent levels, it will be necessary to increase ore production rates by about 50%, as mentioned, to 153

Introduction Contract miners have long played an important role in the minerals industry. Historically, these were individuals who worked as underground miners and were paid by the ton or the day. These hardy types still ply their trade in the industry. However, today the term "contract miner" generally refers to an independent contractor who supplies the people and equipment needed to conduct surface mining operations for an owner or lease holder. At one time or another, contract miners have probably handled virtually every mineral commodity from sand, gravel, and stone quarrying to mining uranium and precious metal ores. In today&apos;s market, though, contract mining appears to be concentrated in just a few areas. These include precious metal mines, various types of solid fuel operations, and reclamation of abandoned mines. This article covers market areas, contract mining organizations and services, and their advantages and disadvantages. Gold and silver mines Although exact figures are not available, contract mining represents a significant element in the precious metals segment of US mining. For gold and silver, the growth in contract mining appears to be paralleling the overall growth in mining activity itself. Nevada is the largest gold producer in the US. The latest available data (1985) on open pit gold/ silver mines is summarized in Table 1 (Nevada Division of Mine Inspection, 1986). These figures show that contractors mined nearly half of the ore in 1985. Total tonnage mined, of course, was much higher for both owners and contractors. Assuming an average stripping ratio of 2.5 to 1, the total daily mining rate for the contractors was more than 145 kt (160,000 st). This translates into a contract mining rate of about 36 Mt/a (40 million stpy) based on 250 operating days a year. This approximate 50-50 split between owner and contractor also appears to hold for the future. Metals Economics Group (1987) published a survey of 51 short-range and 54 long-range precious metal projects being considered throughout the US. Contacts with owners, requests for proposals, and past corporate philosophies all suggest that about 55% of the open pit operations scheduled for the near-term will be contract mined. This represents an estimated 26 kt/d (28.5 stpd) of ore. A similar assessment of the long-term projects indicates that about 12 kt/d (13,000 stpd), or just under 50% of the open pit tonnage will be contract mined. There are several reasons why gold and silver represent such an attractive opportunity for contract miners. One is that many properties are owned or leased by individuals or partnerships that are essentially entrepreneurial. Many of these owners or lease holders have minimal mining experience. They must therefore either rely on contract mining organizations, sell an interest in the project to another mining company that will become the operator, or hire an experienced management team. For about the same reason, junior mining companies also represent good prospects for contracting. This is because most junior companies focus on exploration. They would prefer to spend their generally limited funds on drilling programs. Thus, they tend to minimize additional capital requirements by using contract miners or farming out the property to another mining company. Another good reason for using contract miners is the size of the deposit. Many properties are so small that their reserves will not support the capital expenditures

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. De¬pending on local geology and hole diameter selected, drilling patterns of 8 x 8 m, 8.5 x 7.3 m, and staggered patterns of 11 x 5.5 m

Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. The commenters may be trying to make the point that the four-hole configurations with respect to the original bench face are not exactly the same. In fragmenting the

Discussion by B. Beatty This is a response to M.J. Hrebar&apos;s paper, which tracks in detail the highly productive stripping capabilities of modern large bulldozers at two separate installations. It proves the old adage "economies of scale" and quantifies the advantage of being able to move large loads of dirt over comparatively short haul distances by sliding rather than carrying the load. This discussion examines whether a bulldozer is the most efficient way of using this geotechnical principle. Case 1 - Study eastern US: Contour coal stripping application The energy consumption for the Case 1 mining method (eastern US contour stripping operation) shows the D11 averaged 117 L (31 gal) of diesel fuel per scheduled hour, and produced 333.3 bank m3 (436 bank cu yd) per scheduled hour (0.351 L/m3). Assuming 1 L (0.26 gal) of diesel fuel contains 10.4 kW-hr of energy, the unit expenditure of fuel energy for Case 1 Study was 3.66 kWh/m3. Another way of shifting this material is by using an overburden slusher (OS), as shown in Fig. 1. The OS as shown in Fig. I. The OS is electrically powered and consists of a manned low wall winch (LW ), a remote controlled (radio telemetry) highwall winch (HW) and a hoe. The winches operate to pull the hoe back and forth across the pit. The hoe carries load in the forward direction ahead of a rear mounted blade and returns empty. A spreadsheet (Lotus 123) simulation package, BOSSIM, models the OS operation on a load by load basis over a wide range of pit configurations. The geometry shown in Fig. 2 of the paper was modeled using BOSSI M and the results are summarized in Table1. Table 1 shows a LW with 150 kW (200 hp) and a HW of 120 kW (160 hp) installed power, towing a 15-m3 (19-cu yd) hoe, would accomplish the Case 1 stripping task at about the same scheduled stripping rate (D11=333 m3/hr or 433 cu yd/ hour, OS=342 m3/hr or 447 cu yd/ hour). It was assumed the winches in this equipment have an electromechanical efficiency of 90%. This gives an average electrical energy expenditure rate of 151 kW-hr, and a unit energy expenditure level of 0.44 kWhr/m-3(0.57 cu yd/kWh)-an improvement of 8291%- over the D11 alternative. The energy comparison illustrates the importance of using more efficient electric power if possible, ahead of the internal combustion engine, and delivering power from a fixed ground position rather than through a moving track system. Another important energy observation is the comparative action of the dozer blade and the OS hoe. The former implement continuously digs and spills as it works the load forward. The OS hoe digs the load until full, the blade then lifts due to the contained load pressure and a shear plane forms under the mass, enabling it to slide forward in a force reduced - transporting mode. Economic comparison Table 2 operating cost per scheduled hour and unit cost comparison follows a format used in Tables 2 and 3 of Hrebar&apos;s paper and compares Case 1 Study with the OS alternative. Drill and blast costs are kept constant in both cases, although when larger OS units are considered, it is expected these costs will reduce because bigger hoe sizes will permit larger rocks to be transported efficiently.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.&apos;s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Introduction In view of the continuing depletion of natural resources, requirements for energy conservation, plant optimization and hazardous waste management, and environmental consciousness, recycling and secondary recovery of materials are being developed with increasing interest Many secondary recovery processes are being developed that apply mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation have all emerged as explicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. The concept of the alternating magnetic field eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago using rudimentary electromagnets (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889). Widespread acceptance was, however, hindered by high costs, marginal results and poor economic incentives for secondary recovery. With the recent increased interest in secondary recovery and the development of high-energy rare earth permanent magnets, the eddy-current separator has now gained prominent acceptance. The separation forces imparted by an eddy current separator are the function of the magnetic field intensity and the alternating frequency of the magnetic field. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high-intensity magnetic fields. High-energy rare earth permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymium-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits. The eddy-current separator has been successfully applied in several metal sorting and recovery operations. Most common is the sorting of metal from shredded automobile scrap and municipal waste. With the advent of high-frequency, high-intensity magnetic fields, the separator has advanced to the point where it has direct application in the beneficiation of fine sized metals. Relatively fine sized (-1/4 in.) metal bearing slags and spent foundry casting sands as well as precious metal hearing electronic scrap demonstrate excellent metallurgical response to the eddy-current separator, and applications have progressed to finer materials and more selective separations. Theory Electrical currents are induced in all conductors when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. The induced current generates a magnetic field in the conductor that opposes that of the alternating magnetic field. Figure 2, is a schematic illustration of generated eddy currents. In this particular example, the alternating magnetic field is produced by a series of permanent magnets mounted on the circumference of a rotor. The permanent magnets have alternating polarity. As the rotor revolves, an alternating magnetic field is produced, and the rate of revolution determines the frequency of the alternating magnetic field. When a conductor, such as a metallic disc in the illustration, is placed in the alternating magnetic field, a closed loop current flow occurs. The current loop in the conductor produces a magnetic field that is a mirror image of the alternating magnetic field. At any point in time, the induced magnetic field in the conductor directly opposes the alternating magnetic field. This opposition of magnetic fields produces an instantaneous repulsion in the conductor. The conductor is consequently repelled from the rotor. The alternating magnetic field has no effect on nonmetallic materials as they pass through the magnetic field and discharge the rotor in a natural trajectory. [ ]
