Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have been used in mining in decades past, but their use has been limited and sporadic. This has changed in recent years, with TBMs being used at Stillwater Mine, Grosvenor Coal Mine Slopes, Sirius Minerals potash mine, and more. These machines are all full face, circular TBMs—a design that has thus far have been unable to tackle a larger issue for mines: typically a flat floor is needed for mining vehicles to traverse. A novel type of non-circular boring machine is now answering the need to quickly reach underground ore bodies while cutting a rectangular profile in hard rock. This cross section allows for use of typical mine trucks and other rubber-tired mine vehicles. The machine uses disc cutters to cut the rock, and has a support structure similar to an open type TBM; however, the cutting geometry is entirely different. The machine is currently cutting an access tunnel at a silver mine. This paper reviews the design and operation of the novel noncircular tunnel boring machine, and describes possible future adaptations to provide safe, sustainable mine development.

Over 25 years ago, SKEGA pioneered the use of rubber linings in grinding mills and rubber is today widely accepted and almost standard material chosen for Regrind -and Secondary Mills. There are, however, only a few Primary Mills in operation with "solid" rubber linings because available materials and designs are often not cost efficient in comparison with steel alloys on a cost per ton basis and/or downtime for liner replacement would be too high.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. 23.1-SOURCE, POWER-SYSTEM ELEMENTS A. J. T HUM Basic considerations in providing power for mine production and collateral operations are: 1. Mining operations of any size normally use electric motors for driving all equipment except mobile service units. 2. The electricity for power may be purchased or self-generated, depending on the location, size and specific operating circumstances of the individual property. 3. The major elements of the power system will be the source, either an incoming transmission line from a utility in the case of purchased power or the power plant if self-generated. Energy for the power plant may be water, hydrocarbon fuels, waste heat or nuclear, which will govern the type of prime mover selected. 4. The electricity normally is generated in the form of alternating current and must be distributed to the points of usage. This usually requires a primary substation for transformation to suitable voltages and secondary substations at points of usage throughout the operations, The power is delivered from the primary to the secondary substations over transmission lines or cables, depending on distances, voltages and local conditions. 5. At the points of use, there will be starting and protective devices for each motor. In some instances, direct current will be needed and rectifiers of various types can be used to provide it. 6. The entire electrical system requires suitable switching and protective devices to prevent damage to the equipment in case of power failues or faults; also, in most cases, sufficient metering to establish the demand and amount of electrical energy consumed. 23.2-PURCHASED POWER A. J. THULI 1. Where public-utility or government-generated power is available, it usually is advantageous for the mine owner to purchase rather than generate. Purchased power generally will be cheaper and more reliable than operating a small generating plant except in some cases where waste heat is available as the source of energy and can be used to supply all or a portion of the power requirements. 2. If it is decided to purchase power, the owner usually must participate in the cost of constructing the connecting line from the closest existing utility line to his point of usage. If the connected load is less than 1,000 lip, it probably is best to let the utility provide the primary substation. For larger connected loads the owner can obtain a more favorable "primary voltage" rate if he provides the primary substation to receive the incoming power and transform it to the distributing and usage voltages. 3. The cost of purchased power usually is made up of a demand charge, deter¬mined by the maximum amount of power the customer takes during any 15-min period throughout a month, and a graduated energy charge for the kilowatt-hours consumed-that is, so much for the first block of energy based on the demand,

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin trend comprises over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 50 million ounces of gold (Fig. 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are four major deposits; Post, Betze, Bluestar, and Genesis, plus numerous smaller deposits (Fig. 2). Betze is located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines; Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property; and Post on both Barrick and Newmont property.

At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

Within the mineral processing Industry. a range of grinding conditions exists which include semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod milling. and conventional ball milling. Each of these mill environments presents a unique environment for grinding media, requiring the application of specific physical and chemical properties for optimum grinding media performance. The environments are characterized by varying degrees and combinations of abrasive, corrosive, and impact wear. An extensive test program has been conducted to determine the extent wear rates vary between these different applications. Test results are related to production results, ball size, and mill operating conditions.

Excessive emissions of methane from the coal seams can have a serious adverse effect on both safety and productivity of longwall coal faces. Mechanization of coal faces has increased production possibilities to the extent that normal ventilation systems may not be able to ventilate coal face areas in order to lower methane content in the air to within legal limits. Production increases may therefore be prohibited for this reason, especially in gassy seams. Methane drainage from the coal seam by means of long holes and before production starts can act as a useful remedial action. In this paper a two dimensional mathematical model has been produced. The model that is based on finite elements, simulates a methane drainage system where the resultant risk is linked to the coefficient of diffusion, coal permeability, holes pattern and the duration for which the seam is subject to drainage. It is concluded that methane drainage of this type can assist in achieving production increases in many coals seems, especially where high gas content is a virtue of the seam.

Newmont has delineated a 600,000+ ounce gold reserve in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. This is a desert range underlain by Proterozoic(?) Tumco Formation (gneiss) intruded by Jurassic granitic plutons, and cut by low angle shears of the late Cretaceous Chocolate Mountain Thrust event. Gold, associated with pyrite, quartz veinlets, and propylitic alteration, is emplaced along low angle shears. The mineralizing system, enriched in tungsten, copper, zinc and arsenic, was active during Eocene time. Gold reserves are found in eleven areas as moderate to high tenor deposits that may be mined by open pit and underground techniques. Eastmaque Gold Mines Ltd. is developing the deposit.

A process has been developed for increasing the grade of chalcopyrite concentrates from about 25 percent copper to about 60 percent copper. The concentrates are treated with two steps of autoclaving and then by flotation. Because of the lower associated weight, copper in the concentrates could be shipped and smelted at less cost than untreated concentrates. Use of the process can also increase overall yield from an orebody if a lower grade concentrate is sent to enrichment than would be sent to a smelter. Potential applications of the process would be for treating concentrates that must be transported a long distance for smelting or for treating concentrates so as to increase the capacity of a smelter.

A simple method for estimating the steady-state water quality of a pit lake is presented. The steady-state concentration of a conservative chemical constituent in a pit lake is shown to be a simple function of inflow rate, evaporation rate, and inflow concentration. An analytical method is presented for estimating the equilibrium ground water inflow rate for use in water quality predictions. The time required to reach chemical steady-state is estimated using an iterative mass balance model. Mine operators should find the methodology useful for planning and screening-level regulatory applications where conservative estimates of pit lake water quality are desirable.

Efficient flotation of fine phosphate minerals from a deslimed waste phosphate stream (-74 microns) has been achieved by both bench-scale flotation and by flotation with a 2-inch air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) unit. A sample was collected from the waste phosphate slime stream at the SF Phosphate Limited Operations near Vernal, Utah, for flotation experiments at University of Utah laboratories. The collector used was a mixture of fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate and kerosene. Bench-scale flotation test results show that the minus 15-micron particles have a significant adverse effect on phosphate flotation. When the minus 15-micron material was removed by a classifying hydrocyclone, improved flotation recovery and concentrate grade were realized. A bench-scale flotation recovery of 86 % with a concentrate grade of 16% P2O5 was obtained from classified waste slime (74 x 15 microns) feed material containing 11.3% P2O5 In contrast, a 90% P2O5 recovery was achieved with a concentrate grade of 16-18% P2O5 by single-stage ASH flotation. With a second stage of ASH flotation, a concentrate containing 23% P2O5 was realized at an overall recovery of 75%. These results indicate that the industrial application of ASH flotation technology for phosphate recovery from waste slimes is promising.

Innovative mining technology came to Texas in the form of bucket wheel excavator/cross-pit spreader systems. Texas Utilities Mining Company put the first system to work at its Big Brown Mine in December 1985. The second such system was put into operation at the Monticello Mine in February 1991. The cross-pit spreader systems are mobile, electrically powered, excavation and conveyor systems, the principal components of which include bucket wheel excavators (BVE) and an across-the-pit conveyor (spreader). These crawler mounted machines operate as a unit; the BVE's excavate overburden, feed it via conveyors to the spreader which in turn conveys the material across the open pit and onto the developing spoil bank. The system at the Big Brown Mine is composed of 2 BVE's and an across-the-pit conveyor while the Monticello system is made up of 1 BVE and a spreader. The BVE's prestrip overburden preparing a dragline bench for the final removal of overburden. Numerous evaluations, including lignite production requirements, economics, overburden characteristics, rehandle reduction, spoil stability, and the compatibility with dragline operations, led to the selection of the cross-pit spreader system at the Big Brown Mine. The system has proven itself as a viable and economical means of prestripping. The system's success at the Big Brown Mine led to the development of a second such system at Monticello. The advent of the cross-pit spreader system is viewed by Texas Utilities Mining Company as a viable solution to recovering deeper lignite reserves in a safe and economical manner.

"Fluorspar is one of the most important industrial minerals. It has a wide range of applications, for example it is used in the steel and aluminum industry, and is also the raw material to produce hydrofluoric acid, Teflon or Gore-Tex. There are only a few major fluorspar mines worldwide, with China being the most important fluorspar producer (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). At Okorusu, Namibia, fluorspar has been mined with conventional open pit mining methods from 1955 until 2014 from a large scale metasomatic fluorspar deposit with seven identified orebodies. There are about 7 million tons of measured resources left with an average grade of 27.5 % CaF2. This paper is based at an MSc thesis at Technical University Freiberg and describes the design of an underground mine for the A and D orebodies with an annual production rate of 100,000 t acid-grade fluorspar product. By comparing different mining methods and adapting variants of access to the underground orebodies the paper will emphasize on the selection of a suitable mining technology, with a special focus on the economic considerations to decide about the most profitable operation. INTRODUCTION Mining holds an important part in the economy of Namibia. In 2016 11.1 % of the GDP was made through mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists an underground mining operation. The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 6 to 7 million t (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu produced on average about 50.000 t annually in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals In-formation Center, 2015). Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an open pit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014 the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village. The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 7 million t of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 % CaF2. This study focusses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged."

New technology for removal of nitrate from low-temperature waters has been developed. Typical results from the first operational-scale system (operating at a metal mine in Montana since January 1996) are over 90 percent nitrate removal at a flow rate of 130 gpm and a water temperature of 12°C. The system also operated successfully at flow rates as high as 300 gpm and water temperatures as low as 2°C. The ABC is advantageous because it is: a) cost-effective to design, construct and operate, and b) effective at cold water temperatures. The system can be designed for a variety of flows, nitrate concentrations, water temperatures and water qualities.
