Finnish mining traditions date back 400 years. The country was then one of Europe's major iron producers. Most of the mines in current operation, however, were started during the last 20 to 30 years. The Finnish mining industry must make do with limited resources. Deposits are usually low grade and small in size. Open-pit methods are used where possible. But thin ore bodies and harsh winters can impose severe restrictions. Underground mining is often the only option. Despite these handicaps, Finnish metal miners produce copper, nickel, zinc, vanadium, iron ore, cobalt, and ferrochrome. Ironically, the success of Finnish mining is rooted in a crisis the industry faced several decades ago. Mining costs were rising. High grade mineral deposits were nearly exhausted. It was vital that Finland develop new mining machinery and methods that afforded higher productivity. Cooperation between the Finnish mining industry and its equipment manufacturers was good. Partly as a result, the Finnish mining industry has turned itself into one of the most modern and efficient in the world. The Finns did this while continuing to meet the stringent safety and environmental requirements in force in the Nordic countries. Today, the share of domestic raw materials used by the Finnish metallurgical industry is decreasing. So the country increasingly depends on imports of ores and concentrates. To better provide these imports, Finnish mining companies have expanded their foreign operations. And, while importing raw materials, the mining industry has been exporting its technological and equipment know-how and expertise. Mining methods Conventional mining methods and machinery are used in surface mines. Drilling is the exception. It is done with Tamrock hydraulic track drills and 100 to 150 mm-diam (4 to 6-in.-diam) drill holes. Pumpable slurry explosives are used in larger open pits. Underground, sublevel stoping with open stopes is the most common mining method. It accounts for about 80% of all underground stoping. The main benefits of this method are low production costs, high mechanization, and easy control. The best productivity figures exceed 10 t (11 st) per man-hour, including all mining personnel. The development of cable bolting has made it possible to use sublevel open stoping even in relatively weak rock. Cut-and-fill methods, such as concrete-pillar stoping, inclined-wall stoping, and traditional cut-and-fill have also been used, combined with sublevel caving and room-and-pillar methods, according to local demands. Various fill materials and stabilization components have been investigated and tested for cut-and-fill methods. Sublevel open stopes are often later filled, to stabilize the surface or to allow pillar recovery.

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. Introduction Clearly, many problems confront the minerals industry today. Yet, at the same time, there is too much energy spent bemoaning the negative effects of difficult economic circumstances, low metals prices, and adverse government policies. These are factors that cannot be altered by individual mineral company reactions. In fact, as we look to the future, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will continue to be faced with uncertainty. Thus, an area that demands close scrutiny and that can significantly affect a company's performance in the future is the posture it adopts to deal with uncertainty. This paper looks at how strategies are developing to deal with this issue. It also examines some of the implications that implementing such strategies have for the role of the individual explorationist. Elements of strategy Whether mineral company strategies are based on diversifying or retrenching, on emphasizing primary production or downstream integration, there seems to be increasing agreement that in the current environment strategies must have several features. They need to be information-based - developed out of access to timely and complete data and analysis about proposed directions and competitor activity, rather than simply following a current fashion. They need to be flexible - adaptable in light of changes in the marketplace and an unpredictable industry. And they need to be cost-efficient - making the most of limited resources. Whether a company is looking for gold financing opportunities, acquiring polymetallic prospects, or doing grassroots exploration for diamonds, these three elements are increasingly essential. They not only allow the company to pursue its current goals most expeditiously, but also open it to hearing and using feedback in the most constructive way. The company can then improve or change strategy as it proceeds. And it can be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. These elements of strategy place great emphasis on the skills of the individual. The need for critical intelligence and the reduced amount of capital available to manage are making it more obvious that exploration is a "people" business. This is in accordance with a general trend in many sectors of industrialized economies, reflecting the widely discussed shift from smokestack to information-based industries. Increasing the odds There is a direct connection between successfully implementing the approaches to strategy discussed above and encouraging and improving the quality of work of the individual explorationist. To illustrate the importance of this, some commonly quoted figures on the odds of discovery success can be used. These figures are arbitrary but illustrative. Assume that one out of 100 exploration prospects actually turns out to be a promising ore body, and that one out of 1000 becomes a mine. Based on our research, chances are the most of those

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. INTRODUCTION This paper presents an assessment of conventional flotation technology. In addition it presents some ideas which can be used to change the perception of what may be done with conventional flotation equipment to maximize its efficiency. Perspective of Conventional Flotation Technology 1. Flotation in many coal preparation plants is defined as something between a necessary evil and a non-viable concept because: -Too much art is required on a continuous basis to achieve uniformly acceptable results. -It is expensive, the capital cost in dollars per ton of circuit feed for flotation and dewatering is high. -It is a difficult process to use when SO2 reduction governs system design and equipment selection. -It creates a product (fine coal froth) that is difficult to dewater in the presence of BTU/lb as-received pressures. -It is a difficult process to control from a management standpoint, there are no dependable set points to rely on. 2. Many froth cell circuits are 0.5m x 0 (nominal 28 M x 0) feed which is sourced from screen/cyclone underflows. The original intent was to obtain maximum yield at acceptable product quality and moisture using disc filters. (See Figure #1) 3. An alternate to conventional flotation and its perceived to be limits of efficiency, capital costs, etc. is to move towards such developing flotation technologies as column flotation, reverse flotation, and microbubbles. A lot of work is being done to move these concepts thru pilot stages into full scale, commercial plant operation. The majority of the coal producers and coal preparation plant designers view these concepts as being in the development/pilot plant stages. OBJECTIVES Based on the preceeding comments of the perspectives of the coal producers and plant designers, the options are limited. They can make do with what they have available to them in the way of industry standard equipment and practices or they can move forward with developing technology. I feel there is a third option: what can we really do today with what is available to us, without reinventing the wheel? APPROACH 1. When processing coal against ash and SO2 restrictions, the fine clean coal stream can be the best stream on the clean coal conveyor due to the release by size and the ability to create a high BTU/low sulfur (dry basis) product. 2. Targets: -Consistent raw coal size consist in the plant feed . -Do not put pyrites in the froth cells. -Adjust criteria defining good flotation away from yield towards maximum BTU recovery at minimum ash. -Limit the froth cell feed size consist to 0.15 mm x 0 (nominal 100M x 0). -Establish and maintain a correct, consistent percent solids in the froth cell feed. -Select flotation reagents with care. -Introduce reagents in the proper sequence.

Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. To derive a mathematical model, the following assumptions are made: •At time zero (t = 0), the dust source is at point x = 0 of an infinite drift. •The problem is considered a one-dimensional case. •The mean velocity of air and the diffusion coefficient are constant. •There is no source or sink of dust other than specified at point x = 0 and time t = 0. The Bethlehem Mines Corp. is a captive mining subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp. Its coal production is tied to the demands for and production of steel, a situation that has to balance between the following two extreme strategies: (1) either the mines are designed and operated for some optimum production level and the demand fluctuations within the steel corporation are met by supplementary corporate coal sales and purchases, or (2) the mines absorb all the demand fluctuations, regardless of the effects on mine costs. A rational definition of the best strategy between these extremes is, of course, needed but is very difficult to formulate in view of the complexity of the many factors that would have to be included in the analysis. Consequently, rather than setting profit targets for each given mining division and/or individual mine, the practice evolved to set production targets for producing specified tonnages of coking coal for shipments to the ovens located at the corporation&apos;s iron and steelmaking plants. This in turn leaves the mines with the dilemma of having to explain demand-related cost-per-ton fluctuations while essentially depriving them of the ability to control profit through tonnage optimization. In the early 1970&apos;s, the coal prices rose significantly, while other factors led to sagging productivity in underground coal mining. Thus, the role of Bethlehem&apos;s coal operations in the corporate profit picture gained in relative importance. This, in turn, sparked a closer attention to the coal mining cost structure and factors controlling productivity. At the same time, the drastic increase in the capital needed to open a new mine also increased the amount of planning required to minimize risks. All of this called for more well-defined, quantitative operating data. Bethlehem therefore launched, in the early 1970&apos;s, a number of innovative steps that, as the future may show, represented pioneering contributions to the growing sophistication of North American underground coal mine planning and management control practices. This case study describes the changes that led to the current implementation of a novel production reporting system at Bethlehem&apos;s coal mines. These changes took place in two distinctly different phases. The current system that resulted from the Phase II developments utilizes, of course, experience gained earlier and is expected to be amplified to incorporate more advanced concepts and technology as future experience dictates.

I reached New York at the start of my second South American adventure on Jan. 9, 1916. In the Anaconda office I found that we were not to take the steamer for two weeks which gave me time to study reports on Potrerillos and Corocoro. Reno Sales, whom I had met in Butte only casually, was to go with us to South America. Though he was only a little older than I, he was already an unquestioned leader of our profession, and we became and remained good friends. William Braden was in New York and would return to Santiago with us. Tom Hamilton would also be returning from a vacation. Leighton Stewart, a young engineer who was to work for Braden, was going on the steamer with us, taking along his wife. And of course Dr. Ricketts would go along. He had just become engaged to John Greenway&apos;s half sister, Kate Greenway, and in order not to be away from her longer than was necessary, he did not reach New York until a day before we sailed. This made eight of us who would be in the party. We were to go to Corocoro first, as Braden had taken an option on the Chilean company there. Development was already under way. As reports came in by mail we tried to get as good an idea of the property as we could before the actual examination. Mr. Thayer "put us up" at India House, one of the best lunch clubs in New York, and Reno and I ate our lunches there almost every day. Thayer, Braden, and Cornelius Kelley, who was to succeed Mr. Ryan as president of Anaconda, joined us when they could. At the lunches they told us about the under- ground war in Butte a few years earlier. When I wrote my chapter on the Butte wars in Romantic Copper more than 15 years later I could not help being biased a bit by my friends, all of whom were on the Anaconda side. But their opponents in the Clark and Heinze camp were just as biased in their comments on my book.

Introduction As the world economies continue to face an increased demand for natural resources to support growth in the established and developing world, the western mining industry has expanded its operations and funding of mineral developments into new and relatively unexplored regions of the world. Mining companies worldwide, in order to grow in a global economy, are now actively exploring and developing mineral resources in the emerging markets of South and Central America and most recently have expanded activities throughout Asia. South East Asia Resources (S.E.A. Resources) has recognized the vast resource potential offered by countries such as China, India and Indonesia, Asia&apos;s main driving forces of economic growth and has made a commitment to be actively involved in the area. These countries rich in mineral resources, represent some of the highly prospective and underexplored regions on earth. Their vast potential has been underestimated because of political reasons and overlooked as Central and South America still continue to be the focus of exploration for many mining companies. Most of these Asian countries have faced a prolonged period of political unrest and it has not been until recently that they have begun to enjoy a relatively stable political climate which has encouraged foreign investment, growth and economic development. These countries are in need of capital to develop their infrastructure and market economies. Their wealth in resources is one of the best methods to achieve their goals. Gold is usually one of the first targets to be extracted from developing economies. Equivalent-sized gold projects tend to cost less to develop and require less supporting infrastructure than base metals. These projects are easier to finance and, most important of all, tend to give a quicker return on investment than that offered by base metals. They also provide the economy with precious foreign exchange, international investment and the technology required to build the country. Following is a graph representing the global re-allocation of the total capital investment on the twenty largest gold projects now under construction with the total for those under construction in 1990.

In this paper we are going to look at some things that may happen to the industrial minerals industry in the next decade. First, some concepts and definitions. What are industrial minerals? Not everyone agrees on an answer to this. So let&apos;s look at some of the opinions. Some say that industrial minerals are non-metallic minerals. As you well know, metallic minerals are used as a source material for metals. Copper, lead, and zinc are extracted from metallic minerals. But, some metallic minerals are also used for other reasons. Bauxite is used as a source of alumina and aluminum. It is also used as proppant in well drilling, as an abrasive, as a refractory material, and as a source of aluminum-based chemicals. So bauxite is both metallic and nonmetallic. There are other examples, too. Bastnasite is a source of rare earth metals and alloys but its concentrate is used in fluid cracking catalysts. Phosphate rock is an industrial mineral when used for fertilizer, but it is also the source of phosphorus. Ilmenite and rutile are sources for titanium dioxide pigments as well as titanium. So the nonmetallic designation is not adequate to define industrial minerals. Some say industrial minerals are called such because they are consumed in industry. How about your cat&apos;s litter box? Is that industry? Huge amounts of montmorillonite, attapulgite and other sorbtive minerals are pelletized and calcined to make animal litter. Doctors are trying to get people to cut down on their salt consumption. They are against people eating industrial minerals. When diamonds are a girl&apos;s best friend, they are not industrial minerals; when they are grinding and polishing media, they are. These examples show that industrial minerals are not exclusive to industry. Regardless, here is my list of industrial minerals: Abrasive Materials - Bentonite Antimony (Oxide) - Borates Asbestos - Calcium Carbonate Attapulgite - Diatomite Ball Clay - Dolomite Barite - Feldspar Bauxite (and Alumina) - Fire Clay Fluorspar - Pyrophyllite Fuller&apos;s Earth - Rare Earths Graphite - Salt Gypsum - Sand and Gravel Kaolin - Silica Sand Kyanite - Soda Ash Limestone - Sodium Sulfate Magnesite - Spodumene (Lithium) Magnetite - Sulfur Mica - Talc Nepheline Syenite - Titanium Dioxide Perlite - Vermiculite Phosphates - Wollastonite Potash - Zeolites Pumice There is some overlapping. Fuller&apos;s Earth takes in some attapulgite, bentonite, and other minerals, depending on the market. Some would like to distinguish industrial minerals by the market emphasis they receive compared to fuels, metallics, and precious metals. But even there, strict logic fails. Some industrial minerals are commodities. They are sold on a price basis against industry product specs, usually in large volumes. Phosphate rock, potash, sulfur, salt, soda ash, and other materials fit this category. Some are almost custom-designed for end-use and meet performance specs. These are sometimes called functional or specialty industrial minerals. Examples of these are ground calcium carbonate, water-washed kaolin, cosmetic grade talc, filtration grades of diatomite, perlite, and vermiculite. The term phosphate beneficiation often conjures up visions of processing technologies that physically separate the phosphate rock from some impurity and do not result in a change in the chemical nature of the phosphate rock. However, when we consider hydrometallurgical processing as a phos¬phate beneficiation technique we have to include all chemical treatments that convert phosphate rock into a more useful product. With most of the phosphate rock mined being used for fertilizer pro¬duction, the best known and most widely employed hydrometallurgical process is wet process phospho¬ric acid manufacture. In general, all phosphate rocks are so insoluble that there is no physical treat¬ment that will allow the phosphate content to be used by vegetation in a timely manner. However, after chemical treatment, 100% of the phosphate is readily available for vegetation nutrition. If there is a chemical beneficiation process that could be considered the standard method of treat¬ing phosphate rock it would have to be the wet pro¬cess for phosphoric acid production. In this process finely ground phosphate is reacted with sulfuric acid to give phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. The phosphogypsum crystals are removed from the phosphoric acid solution and discarded; the phos¬phoric acid is further processed to give the finished fertilizer product. The primary reason that this pro¬cess was adopted so widely is because the phosphogypsum solid that is formed can be easily separated from the phosphoric acid, thereby removing the calcium portion of the phosphate rock and the sul¬fate portion of the sulfuric acid. Other acids have been used to treat phosphate rock but nitric acid is the only other acid used commercially. Nitric acid gives a mixture of phos¬phoric acid and nitrates that can be further pro¬cessed into N-P fertilizers, but the range of N/P grades that can be produced is limited. Hydrochlo¬ric acid has been used to react with phosphate rock, and it can be used to generate a pure phos¬phoric acid but only after solvent extraction to separate the calcium chloride from the phosphoric acid. And then there is the problem of what to do with the calcium chloride. The acid that has received the most attention as a substitute for sulfuric acid is phosphoric acid. In this process, the phosphoric acid reacts with the phosphate rock to give a mono-calcium phosphate solution. This process does not dissolve all the impurities in the phosphate rock, and these solids can be removed from the solution before sulfuric acid is added to convert the soluble calcium to insoluble phosphogypsum. Despite all the claimed advantages, this process has not found favor. A suc¬cessful application of this process to treat some of the lower grade phosphate rocks being used today would seem to have some distinct advantages. This device offers a significant power savings on wet fine grinding applications when compared to conventional tumbling mills. This paper describes the laboratory application of this mill wet grinding hydrated alumina to products of 50 percent passing 2 to 6 microns.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I would like to thank Hans von Michaelis for inviting me here today to talk to you on the subject of "How to Reduce Capital and Operating Costs at Heap Leaching Projects". The comments I have to offer are based on my experiences in gold heap leaching by Newmont Gold Company in Nevada, by Newcrest in Western Australia (formerly Newmont Australia), by Minera Yanacocha in Peru, by Penmont in Mexico, by Z­Mont in Uzbekistan, by the Hochschild Group in Peru and expe­riences in copper heap leaching by Magma Copper Company in Arizona and as a consultant on several other smaller projects worldwide. These comments are a mixture of technology, ideology, philos­ophy, strategy, logic and opinions and might be looked at by many of you as "one man's view". I like to look at them as "a view from the bridge". Let me add that it doesn't bother me that you may not agree with my comments and that I would be interested in your comments or criticisms at the end of this presentation. I don't intend to discuss the details of the mineralogical and metallurgical test work. I will assume, for this talk, that the test work has been conducted very carefully and that the ore in ques­tion has been determined to be heap or dump leachable. Let's begin with a couple of don'ts! ! First, "don't build the mill until you have a mine". This might sound to many of you as fundamental but believe me it continues to happen. The minable reserves should be well known and established as being economical to mine and leach. NPVs, ROis and IRRs are fine if you can be sure of the gold price you use in your calculations. The best method is to carefully estimate the capital cost and, most importantly, the operating cost per ounce of gold recovered which should include the repayment of the borrowed capital and the interest thereon. For example, if the operating cost under these conditions is $200 per ounce, you have a project. If it is $400 per ounce, walk away f om it. Incidentally, the same prin­ciple can be applied to projects involving other metals such as silver, copper, lead, zinc, etc. The second don't is - "don't be sheep". Don't climb on the bandwagon with respect to design and operation because every­one else does it a certain way. Keep an open mind, be versatile, look for change, look for every possible innovation for reducing capital and operating costs. Beware of those who will tell you "we tried that it won't work" or "it's too expensive" or "that's a crazy idea" , <' ''what do you know about mining - you are a metallurgist aren't you" or "what do you know about metallurgy - you are a miner aren't you" or "only geologists can handle this issue". Be careful about pigeon-holing people according to their basic degree and experience. In these days of low metal prices, we need to consider everybody's ideas, as crazy as some of them might seem.

My "outside exploration" began in November 1908, only 16 months after I had come to Bisbee as a raw engineer. The well publicized reputations of eminent engineers up to that time, including John Hayes Hammond, Herbert Hoover, James Douglas, D.C. Jack- ling, J. Park Channing, and a few others had been due to new mines they had found or brought to successful operation. And here was I, a mere youngster, given a chance to join the group. I knew there would be disappointments but I had no idea how many of them. In spite of the many prospects that turned out to be worthless I never looked at a new one without the feeling that this one might turn out to be the big success. This confidence, blind as it was, gave every arduous examination a zest and it made me climb every mountain on which the owner said there was something worth seeing, or on which T could see a distant staining that might mean ore. If I looked at every showing the owner suggested he at least would think I was honest and would bring other properties to our attention. This reputation of never refusing to go to see an outcrop, no matter how hot the desert sun or how rough the terrain, was probably one of my best assets. High as my hopes were at the start, they proved not to be exaggerated and if I were given a chance to do it again I would not hesitate, in spite of the jaundice, rheumatic fever, and other maladies that beset some of the expeditions. On the whole the results have equaled all my hopes. Toward the end of my years of active exploration I totaled up the score. Out of the prospects submitted to us about two out of three were eliminated after questioning the owner or prospector, without an examination. This left about a 1000 mines or prospects that seemed worth at least a preliminary look. One out of seven of these was worth a little development and a seventh of this seventh turned out to be a modest success or better. And nine or ten in all, or one out of 1000

Boling Dome. a piercement salt dome in the Texas Gulf Coast basin is (was) the single largest deposit of native sulfur in the Western world. Total sulfur production has been over 81.000,000 long tons and the mine is still in production. Data from over 60 years of operation and 8.000+ wells reveal a salt dome rich in history as well as minerals. Sulfur mineralization and production correlate well with caprock structure and morphology. The occurrence of Mississippi Valley-type deposits in fracture zones is notable in some areas and may warrant additional study. DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION HISTORY Boling Dome is located in the south- east corner of Wharton County, Texas, 60 miles south-west of Houston. It is a piercement type dome in the Houston diapir province. It was discovered in 1922 when the county surveyor noticed sour gas seeps along the San Bernard River (Haynes. 1942). Several companies including Gulf Production Company. Humble, Texas Company, Sun and others quickly began drilling for oil and gas. Traces of native sulfur were reported in cuttings from many wells penetrating the caprock, but the first commercial quantities of sulfur were not found until Gulf Production&apos;s E.M. Chase 3 and 4 wells were drilled in 1927. Texas Gulf Sulphur, then mining sulfur at Gulf Dome in Matagorda County, secured the sulfur rights from Gulf for $3 million in cash and half of the profits after expenses for development and construction of plant and townsite were met (Haynes, 1942). The drilling results from 200 or so Wells revealed a massive deposit destined to become the largest single source of native sulfur in North America. Original reserves were estimated at just over 46 million long tons and were increased in later years. Production by the Frasch method was begun by Union Sulphur in 1928, and continued by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in 1929, and Duval Sulphur Co. and the Baker Williams Co. in 1935. Union produced 8,009 long tons, Duval produced 571,123 long tons, and Baker Williams produced 1,453 long tons. Through its deal with Gulf, Texasgulf acquired the largest and best mineralized portion of the dome and has produced 88,544,466 long tons through 1990, and production is planned for several more years. That amount of sulfur is equivalent to a cube measuring 1,152 feet on each side, or a sulfur highway 1 foot thick, 20 feet wide and 14,479 miles long. Peak production averaged 8,376 ltpd in 1948. A price war between North American sulfur producers and Mexican sulfur producers in 1956, followed by the recession of 1957 and 1958 (Haynes, 1959) coupled with a rapid increase in mining depth to below 700 feet began a gradual production decline that was never reversed (Figures 1 and 2).

Part one of this two-part series covers conceptualizing and developing a maintenance information system. It explains what information is necessary to manage such a system. Next month, part two will discuss using this type of system with administrative information, including error and absentee reports as well as open work files. Introduction There is no doubt that quality, timely, and accurate information can make a solid contribution to maintenance cost reduction objectives. Yet, despite obvious benefits, methods being used to acquire information systems are proving costly, frustrating, and often unsuccessful. Those needing the information are disappointed. Mine managers, hoping to reduce costs with quality information, are instead seeing no system, no savings, and massive spending on information endeavors of questionable benefit. Options Any software vendor will happily sell you his program. Numerous mining organizations, having "gone to the cleaners" themselves, will gladly make their programs available to help cover huge trial and error development costs. Any package can only be a generalization. Any program bought from some other organization must undergo numerous modifications to make it work properly. In the process the initial cost is doubled. Many mining maintenance organizations do not know how to go about the task of conceptualizing, developing, installing, and effectively using a maintenance management information system. Consequently, many have hedged their primary responsibility of specifying what information they want, how they will get it, and how they will use it effectively. Into this void have jumped many who claim they can help. But some may not understand the special information needs of maintenance in the mining industry. By default, the whole scene of maintenance information systems has become confused and in need of clarification. A Starting Point Four broad phases are used to organize the steps by which maintenance acquires an effective maintenance management information system and initiates its use. Conceptualization is an identification of needs, factors that influence development, and an assessment of support for the system. Development is a plan of action for bringing the conceptualized information system to life. Consideration is given to the practical aspects of collecting field data, processing it, and converting it into useful information. Implementation consists of those actions by which the newly developed system is integrated into the organization and put in the hands of its personnel so that its value can be derived. Use addresses the means by which personnel use the information to accomplish maintenance improvement objectives. These phases are preceded by establishing the need for the information system. They are followed by a requirement to measure its success (Fig. 1). Conceptualizing the Information System Responsibilities - The information system user must acquire the system best suited for its use. A step-by-step process is essential to avoid many serious problems than can easily occur. The most important step is to clearly identify its objectives and lay out a course of action to achieve those objectives. The major reason for the failure to achieve information objectives is not carrying out this responsibility. Maintenance cannot delegate the task to data processing. It can obtain technical assistance but it must retain responsibility. Nor can maintenance purchase

Introduction Until recently, there were many jobs for mineral engineering graduates. Traditionally, minerals-related career paths available to university graduates stem from rather standard offerings in the disciplines of mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology, geophysical engineering, and mineral economics. Within each discipline, there exists many career opportunities. In fact, until fairly recently, the most difficult decision for most graduates was choosing among all the available alternatives. Unfortunately, this relative state of euphoria changed quickly and dramatically within the minerals sector. Within two or three years, graduates from minerals-related engineering disciplines found it exceedingly difficult - and then almost impossible - to secure employment in the minerals sector upon graduation. At the same time, there were dramatic reductions in production requirements and, ultimately, mine closings. This resulted in massive layoffs and often termination of professional personnel possessing significant and valuable industrial experience. Obviously, this worsened an already bad employment picture for those hoping to begin a career in minerals. Certainly, there is no universal agreement on what the future offers for the US minerals industry or the career opportunities associated with it. However, there are a number of considerations that deserve study by students, faculty, administrators, and industrial personnel before minerals-related career paths are chosen. Where Will the Jobs Be and How Many? Everyone is aware that the minerals industry is very cyclic. It is not surprising then that job opportunities for new graduates also fluctuate. Typically, there is a two-to-four year lag between industry&apos;s engineering manpower needs and the academic community&apos;s ability to produce this talent. Due to the response lag, there will necessarily be years when supply and demand do not match. Employment Projections It is extremely difficult to anticipate what the key career paths might be within the next few years. Considerable speculation remains with respect to whether activity in the US minerals sector over the short-, intermediate-, and long-term will improve, remain status quo, or further deteriorate. However, some information pertaining to the prospects for career opportunities in mining engineering was offered by Tingley and Ghose (ME, Sept. 1983, p. 1274) from a study performed by Fenvessy and Schwab. Results from this industry-sponsored survey suggest that the US will experience 700 more mining engineers than needed in 1985, 1300 in 1990, and 1800 in the year 2000. These conclusions were based on the assumptions that future graduate levels remain flat and demand increases 3.6% annually. Educators quickly argued that depressed job markets, coupled with university student mobility, would negate the assumption of flat mining graduate levels in the immediate future. Student Mobility Student mobility from one engineering discipline to another is high. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous growth in programs such as computer engineering and computer science at the expense of enrollments in the more traditional engineering programs. The ability and willingness of students to quickly change engineering disciplines in response to existing and perceived job market demands have created significant student, faculty, and resource dislocations within universities nationwide. This has resulted in problems for university faculty and administrators responsible for effective use of

Introduction The choice of using a dump or heap leaching process or a fine grinding-agitation leaching process is based on the grade and tonnage of the ore body. Low grade ore and small tonnages are best treated by a low-cost method, such as dump or heap leaching. Permeability, however, is the critical factor in a successful leaching operation, regardless of tonnage or grade. Without permeability in the leach bed, no percolation, no dissolution, no extraction, and no success are possible. Solution delivery to the ore is also essential. Solute-to-mineral contact is a requisite. The solute must be effectively strong and not be depleted in active dissolvers, such as acid, ferric iron, cyanide, and oxygen. It must also be moving across the mineral to be dissolved. No pockets of stagnant solution can be allowed. A third factor is recovery of the now-dissolved metal in the pregnant liquor. All such liquor should be gathered at a reasonable metal concentration to make further pumping and processing worthwhile. Control and recovery of pregnant solutions are probably the most ignored factors of solution mining. This stage in recovery is historically where many operations either fail or become viable. Permeability A permeable heap is normally achieved by taking into account heap building/construction and agglomeration/pelletizing. Even though heap building is critical for good permeability, it will not be discussed here. It has been described in detail by others. Instead, this analysis will concentrate on agglomeration and pelletizing. Differences between agglomeration and pelletizing are emphasized. Agglomeration is referred to when small particles are being attached to larger particles -the ore presents a complete size distribution. On the other hand, pelletizing is a process where all particles are fine (less than 850)µm or 20 mesh), as with mill tailings. The difference is important from two points of view: • Mechanical devices used to achieve the desired attaching action; and • Binder dosages. Mechanical Devices Due to the absence of large particles that fines can become attached to, pelletizing should be done in a centrifugal-action-based device, such as an inclined rotating plate, a rotary drum, or a series of belt-transfer points. In agglomeration, large particles play a part as a natural nucleus for the attaching action of fines. Hence, a tumbling action as strong as for pelletizing is not required. Common methods to accomplish agglomeration include: • Cascade belt system with either all belts moving forward or some of them moving forward and at least one moving backward; • Combination of belt plus inclined vibrating chute; • Large concrete mixer drum; and • Belt discharging directly onto stockpiled ore. The proper agglomeration system will depend basically on the size distribution of the ore and the amount and type of clays present. In all of the agglomerating systems described, the tumbling action takes place at the transfer points either from belt to belt, or from belt to inclined chute ore belt to ore pile. Usually, two or three mixing bars at each transfer point are also included to help the mixing action. Plows to move the ore around on a moving belt are also used.

Unlike coarse particles (40-50 µm), the fines (<10 µm) have low collision efficiencies with gas bubbles in flotation process. Among the alternative methods for recovering the fines are their aggregation with coarse particles (carrier flotation) and flocculation of the fines alone (shear-flocculation), prior to flotation. In any case, hydrophobic aggregation is the mechanism involved though the technique is known by different names in literature. This paper deals with theory and state-of-the-art of particle aggregation. To illustrate the dependence of aggregation on particle hydrophobicity, charge and, in turn, the sheer force, the results of quartz-DDACI and galena-xanthate systems are considered. In the flotation of complex ores selectivity is achieved by chemical control and aggregation of particles of the same species is analogous to that; however, more work is necessary on ores for a better understanding of the pulp chemical aspects from the view point of selectivity in aggregation. For a few ores, the results of earlier workers confirm improved recoveries of fines by aggregation prior to flotation.

A ground-water flow model was developed to simulate the post-mining recharge rate at the Belle Ayr surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin near Gillette, Wyoming. State regulations of Wyoming require that reclaimed lands should provide a rate of recharge that approximates the pre-mining rate. Steady-state calibration and transient simulations showed that the post-mining recharge rate in backfill is at least five centimeters per year, exceeding the original infiltration rate of 0.4 centimeters per year to shallow, overburden aquifers. Major reasons for the increase include the flat topography of reclaimed areas and decreased spoil density. It is expected that the backfill will disaggregate and settle over time, eventually resulting in a nearly constant recharge rate less than five centimeters per year but somewhat greater than the pre-mining rate.
