INTRODUCTION The determination and use of mechanical properties of rock in engineering and rock mechanics are rapidly developing. Many of these properties are determined on intact rock specimens; thus, their application and repre¬sentation of rock mass properties may be limited. How¬ever, relative information often provides useful guidance in the solution to mine design and stability problems. Summarized in this chapter are some of the stan¬dardized techniques and procedures currently used to obtain these mechanical properties. Typical applications of the use of these properties are also presented. Stan¬dardized techniques include those advanced by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM), US Bureau of Mines (USBM), Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, South African Institute of Min¬ing and Metallurgy, and other individual investigators. Information on the mechanical properties of rock and the behavior of the rock under a given system of stresses represents a necessary part of the information for rational engineering design for any given mining op¬eration. The mining method, the type and extent of sup¬port, the extraction ratio, the overall dimensions of the mine, and the orientation of the rooms and pillars are all decisions that are influenced by the mechanical prop¬erties of the ore, roof, and floor material under various stress systems and the magnitude and direction of the in situ stresses (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972). Initial mechanical property information regarding a structure or mine property is generally obtained by two basic techniques: (1) static and dynamic property tests are conducted on intact and fractured rock specimens of exploratory drill core, and (2) dynamic properties are obtained by borehole logging techniques. When mining access becomes available, and as the mining horizon is expanded, additional information can be ob¬tained to verify preliminary mine design values. This chapter presents some of the standardized tech¬niques and equipment currently used in obtaining me¬chanical property data in the laboratory. The properties considered are: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (2) uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores containing planes of weakness, (3) triaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (4) triaxial compressive strength of cores with a plane of weakness, (5) Young's modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, (7) density or apparent specific gravity, (8) modulus of rupture, (9) indirect tensile strength, and (10) creep characteristics. Where possible, an at¬tempt will be made to evaluate each property measure¬ment in relation to the problems of rock mechanics and application of results. TEST SPECIMENS The selection and care of drill core for laboratory testing require some consideration. It is recognized that laboratory-determined properties are not necessarily rep¬resentative of an in situ rock mass property. However, relative information between beds or zones of interest is still valuable information in selecting mining horizons and preliminary design criteria. To provide statistical data the number of drill core samples selected to repre¬sent each of the areas of interest should be from a mini¬mum of three to a maximum of ten test specimens. A judgment must also be made on site as to whether the recovered drill core should be wrapped and sealed in plastic to preserve moisture. On the one hand investiga¬tions of air-dried and saturated specimens have shown that moisture significantly affects the elastic properties and strengths of many rock materials (Obert, Windes, and Duvall, 1946; Colback and Wiid, 1965); on the other hand it is apparent that most core drilling is done with water which may saturate the specimen to a greater extent than in the in-situ condition. Whether or not the decision is made to retain the moisture, the core should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after recovery for subsequent specimen preparation and testing. Specifications Shape: The shape of the specimens influences lab¬oratory testing in two ways: (1) time and cost of sam¬ple preparation and (2) strength of the material. Cy¬lindrical specimens of drill core are by far the least time-consuming to prepare for static or dynamic labora¬tory testing. In addition, the cylindrical shape lends it¬self to a more uniform stress distribution throughout the sample than other shapes, such as rectangles and hexa¬gons. The compressive strengths of various shapes have been studied (Grosvenor, 1963, and Price, 1960), and results indicate that the cylindrical specimens usually provide the highest strength for a given height-diameter ratio. However, reduction in strength from a cylindrical shape to a rectangular in situ pillar is not regarded as significant in relation to other considerations such as planes of weakness in a pillar or safety factors in the design process. Length-Diameter Ratio: The length-to-diameter ra¬tio, LID, has a significant effect on the compressive strength. Various recommendations have been made to use standard LID ratios ranging from 2 to 2.5 to 3 (ASTM, 1975c; ISRM, 1972). However, past work by others such as Obert, Windes, and Duvall (1946) has shown that excellent results can be obtained using LID ratios from 2 > (LID) > >/s. In selecting an LID ratio for testing, one should keep in mind the amount of material available for testing. In many instances, this may be limited. Thus, a shorter specimen such as 1: 1 LID may be necessary to provide enough test data for statistical analysis of results. Sec¬ond, it may be desirable to obtain elastic constants dur¬ing the test. This generally requires instrumentation such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or strain gages near the center of the specimen. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60% of the US coal production from underground mining methods. This represents a substantial yet gradual increase from just under 50% over the last 5 years. As a result of this increased production share, the percentage of ground-fall-related fatalities in longwall mines has also increased when compared to all US underground coal mines. Additionally, about 80% of ground-fall-related fatalities have occurred in areas where the roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current US longwall support practices, a sample of 25 longwall mines were visited representing nearly 50% of the currently active longwall mines representing all of the major US longwall-producing regions. The resulting data was obtained from a wide variety of overburden depths, geologic conditions, mining heights, ground conditions, support practices, and gateroad configurations. The data collected is reported using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Results from the research update previous efforts in classifying mining accidents and injuries as well as current support practices presented by this author at the 2017 Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration Annual Meeting. This data provides a necessary background for future research aimed at further reduction of ground fall accidents and injuries.

INTRODUCTION The art of placer gold mine evaluation and mining has had an interesting evolution beginning in earliest times. DE RE METALLICA (c.1556), documents the use of rockers, circular sieves(jigs) and riff lest for classifying, concentrating and recovering placer gold, respectively. During the late 1800's in the heat of the international gold rush, a bucket ladder mining dredge containing its own processing plant was developed that enabled digging of placers to bedrock that were inaccessible to the hand miner. The power driven churn drill was developed at about the same tie that facilitated more rapid and larger scale sampling of placers to bedrock. The mineral jig was applied in the early part of the 1900,s to begin the replacement of riffles on placer dredges. Mining dredges proliferated in California and New Zealand to mine the deeper placers and spread throughout the world. The companies that were leaders in dredge mining technology conducted experimental work that advanced the state of the art by processing of gravels with jigs and amalgam systems to recover gold on board dredges in a continuous process. This paper will synthesize the technology of placer gold exploration, mine development and operation into guidelines for evaluation and development of small-scale prospects. Prospect Reconnaissance The location of a prospect usual1 y results from some physical evidence of the presence of gold and/or past mining activity. Any earlier activity that may have produced gold from the prospect, should be investigated before making the trip. The initial reconnaissance should attempt to verify a near-surface presence and then make observations concerning the geomorphic characteristics that relate to placer gold accumulation. Estimates of the probable depth, breadth and length of mineable gravels can be made from the surf ace by the experienced placer mining engineer. With this information, he can speculate on whether there is a viable prospect to be pursued. The placer mining engineer should be experienced in panning samples found in shallow diggings or from existing pits. This will give him immediate indications of gold presence without fear of "salting" by an over-ambitious promoter of the project. The same capability of panning is important during the other sampling phases. A thorough knowledge of logging and calculating the results is essential to proper evaluation of the deposit' s tenor. Evaluation Methods Depending upon the character of the prospect such as river, benches, terraces, jungle, the type of equipment to conduct sampling of the deposit must be determined. In most cases, the drill has replaced bulk sampling. The churn drill has had the greatest amount of accumulated experience but is slow. The reverse circulation drill (RC), is limited by its lack of verification in subsequent mining in order to prove its reliability. However, in the hands of knowledgeable placer mining engineers experienced with its use and calibration, it may be used. The RC Hammer drill (such as the Becker), can be as much as ten times faster than the churn drill and compress the time necessary to prove a prospect, or, to disprove it. All costs in balance, it is often cost effective over the churn drill.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA -commonly referred to as Superfund) was passed into law in December 1980 in the wake of such incidents as Love Canal and the Valley of the Drums. Superfund was originally perceived as a way of cleaning up spills of hazardous substances and/or cleaning up abandoned hazardous waste dumpsites. In February 1981, Michael Cook, EPA deputy assistant administrator for hazardous emergency response, called Superfund "a tremendously powerful law. It could revolutionize the way the environment is protected, but we certainly don't intend to realize the full potential of the law for some time." These words have proven prophetic for Asarco's East Helena Smelter.

Welcome to RANDOL GOLD FORUM 88. It is clear from the list of delegates and speakers that this conference will lead to excellent discussions of the latest developments in this fast-moving industry. Less than a year ago Randol International Ltd. published an eleven-volume report titled "Innovations in Gold and Silver Recovery - Phase 111". In the short space of time since then, many new developments have been noted, many of which will be described in this Forum. The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. The Homer-Wauseca Mine is operated by the Hanna Mining Company, three miles north of Iron River, Michigan on the Menominee Iron Range. The mine produces 5,300 tons of direct shipping iron ore daily. The present main producing level is at a depth of 1,500 feet below the collar. The ore body continues to a depth of 2,700 feet below the collar, to which depth the modern circular concrete shaft has been completed. A view of the property is shown in Figure #1. This paper is a report on the development of large underground boreholes used initially to conduct stope filling material into inaccessible, mined-out stopes. Later holes were drilled for ventilation raises, for mine drainage, for passageway for power cable, also for the primary breaking point for long hole stoping. Some, which were drilled as ventilation raises, were later stripped to a suitable size for a manway or ladder road. The holes varied in size from 6" to 30" with the present popular, economical working size being 16 1/4", used as a stope fill passage in mined out areas and for ventilation in deeper development. Foremost has been the desire to develop equipment suitable for drilling raises large enough for manways.

For many years there has been increasing pressure on mining companies, not without some justification, to design tailings storage facilities which guarantee some degree of protection against process solutions entering local groundwater and surface water flows. A fairly straightforward approach to achieving this has been to design conventional water-retaining type structures, and this has often been reinforced by the need to store large volumes of process water and seasonal run-off within the tailings facility. The conventional design uses naturally occurring geological barriers and a conventional embankment with possibly a grout curtain, or artificial barriers around the entire facility, using either imported low permeability soils, admixtures, or synthetic liners. While these approaches may achieve the primary objective of minimizing seepage, various other factors should be considered. Firstly, by depositing the tailings slurry in a sub-aqueous manner, the tailings, especially if relatively fine grained, will settle to very low densities and little or no on-going consolidation may occur over the operating life of the mine, There have been many cases where measured pore pressures within the tailings mass equal the total overburden stress, i.e., no consolidation and no strength, many years after decommissioning.

The main goal of this paper is to present readers with recommendations for choosing coaxial cables appropriate for mining applications of Time Domain Ref 1 ectometry (TDR) to monitor rock mass movements. Prior to discussing the recommendations, mining applications are illustrated with examples and the operating principle of TDR is discussed briefly. Items that affect the result of the monitoring system performance include the coaxial cable selected, the grouting material used, and the installation procedure.

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

Downstream dispersion curves for certain trace metals were obtained from two mineralized areas in the southeastern U. S. In Lincoln Co., Georgia, 7 sample sets were collected downstream from the Magruder mine, a polymetallic sulfide deposit (Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag-Au) in metavolcanic rocks. Five sample sets were collected along Joe Mill Creek in Grainger Go., Tennessee, downstream from a zone of zinc mineralization in carbonate rocks (Mississippi Valley-type). In both areas, analyses were made of Fe-Mn oxide coatings on lithic fragments and quartz pebbles, and the -80 mesh fraction of the stream sediment. A comparison of the dispersion curves reveals the following: 1.) the anomaly/background ratio is markedly higher in the Fe-Mn oxide coatings for zinc and copper; 2.) the anomaly/background ratlo is markedly higher in the -80 mesh fraction for lead which is not concentrated in the coatings; and, 3.) the Zn/Mn and Cu/Mn ratios in the coatings are useful in that they enhance downstream derectability of mineralization as well as provide for a simpler analytical procedure. There are several potential advantages of using coatings vs. the conventional -80 mesh fraction in stream sediment surveys. Because soluble metal is brought into the stream mainly in groundwater, deeper anomaly sources may be detectable from the oxide coatings than from clastic fractions of alluvium where much of the metal is derived from erosion of soils. Variability due to sampling may also be reduced, providing better discrimination of anomalies. In areas of glacial or alluvial cover, coating surveys may be particularly applicable.

Disseminated gold deposits are the object of major search and development efforts by many mining companies throughout the world. The invention of more advanced equipment for open pit mining and and use of heap leaching methods, taken together with favorable gold prices has led to rising profits in the gold mining industry.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ leach mining "(ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits using light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and their microscopic characteristics, including the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channelways. Low grade disseminated deposit types from the western U.S. were found to contain fracture-hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Geologic features readily observed microscopically include ore and gangue mineral identity, size, and their association with each other and with fractures. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data to: (1) select the proper lixiviant based on chemical reactivity of the host rock, ore, and gangue minerals, (2) determine potential permeability characteristics when designing lixiviant flow patterns, and (3) understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching encapsulated ore minerals. Careful examination of the geologic characteristics of each ore body is required because of the observed diversity of characteristics in deposits from the same "class" and even within the deposit itself.

This paper describes a method to improve coal mine entry intersection design. The method considers the effect of in situ stresses, local geologic conditions, rock physical properties, and mining sequence. Development of the method is discussed, including the results of field instrumentation studies and numerical modeling investigations. Data required to evaluate the effects of roof span, mining sequence, entry orientation, and bolting patterns on intersection stability are also presented. Ground control studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in two underground mines in the Illinois Coal Basin have shown that in situ horizontal stresses and roof geology have a critical effect on intersection stability. Methods to reduce the adverse effects of these parameters are emphasized. Typical failure behavior associated with specific geologic and horizontal stress conditions is&apos; presented to illustrate proposed control methods to alleviate adverse ground conditions.

Copper and gold were discovered in the Copper Canyon area of the Battle Mountain district of Lander County, Nevada, in August of 1866. By 1876 a gravity plant was con¬centrating oxidized Copper Canyon copper-gold ores. The history of mining in the district to 1967 has been summarized by John E. Frost (in press) as a case history of the discovery of the Battle Mountain porphyry copper deposits. His summary is not repeated here; rather, the present case history covers exploration since 1967, primarily for gold ores. Subsequent to the construction by Duval of facilities to mine the porphyry copper deposits in 1967, Duval established a geologic staff at the mine to continue district exploration. The staff was guided by David W. Blake, who acted as chief geologist for Duval&apos;s exploration in this part of Nevada. Blake&apos;s activities led to the publication of numerous technical articles, including his contribution to the US Geological Survey Professional Paper 798-B. A part of that volume is attached as a reprint (pages 23 through 66) as an explanation of the geological setting of mineralization in the district. The work by Blake and his staff recognized metal zonation in the skarn environment at Copper Canyon, and their studies were incorporated in the development of the Tomboy-Minnie gold deposits that are peripheral to the porphyry. Exploration continued beyond the immediate vicinity of the porphyry and the Fortitude ore zones were discovered. These skarn deposits are described in the attached article by Wotruba, Benson, and Schmidt, published in the July 1986, MINING ENGINEERING. The continued exploration successes at Battle Mountain reflect on the well organized and effective exploration team developed at the mine. The team has provided successive discoveries in a district known mostly for ore bodies that are exhausted in a few years&apos; time.

Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.

The Homer City Station, jointly owned by New York State Electric and Gas Corporation and Pennsylvania Electric Company is a three unit coal fired station. The first two units were put into commercial operation in 1969; the third unit became commercial in 1977. Units 1 and 2 are subject to the Pennsylvania State Implementation Plan (SIP) emission limit of 3.7 pounds of S02 per million BTU. Unit 3, having started construction later, is subject to the Clean Air Act, New Source Performance Standards emission levels of 1.2 pounds of 50-2 per million BTU.
