Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi's remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won't guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation's underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation's under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States' raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. The list of environmental issues facing industry in general, and the mining industry in particular, has placed greater emphasis on the concept of risk assessment and risk management. In informal terms, risk can be defined as the chance of injury, loss or damage. More formally, it is defined as the probability of an occurrence and its consequences. In simple terms, risk assessment involves three questions: What can go wrong? How probable is it to go wrong? If it goes wrong, what are the consequences? Experts on the subject of risk assess¬ment and management met in St. Louis, MO in October 1992 to discuss the extensive and innovative technology that has been developed in this arena. Each agreed that a consistent framework can be used to approach risk assessment/ management considerations in siting and design alternatives, as well as when considering financial aspects of mine development. And the environmental planning process for mines, as well as planning for operation through closures, will rely more heavily on risk assessment and management techniques. Risk assessment is a tool to assist engineers, scientists and managers make better, defensible operational decisions. A realistic and probabilistic risk analysis, coupled with a sound financial model, can combine a large set of alternatives and criteria to arrive at a defensible decision. Organizers of this regional SME conference believe that mining professionals should become fully conversant with risk assessment techniques and approaches because this arena provides opportunities to develop more rational decision-making techniques. Current health risk assessments rely heavily on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approaches. Several speakers and papers show how this approach has been applied to a variety of topics. Two major advantages come forward when applying risk assessment techniques to environmental clean-up options for contaminated sites. They are the selection of practical options and cost-effective alternatives. A probabilistic risk assessment provides results that can be directly related to clean-up costs. It has been shown that small reductions in risk are obtained for large increases in cost after a certain threshold value is reached. A preferred, practical clean-up alternative that provides permanent solutions can be selected based on a probabilistic assessment. Here are summaries of some of the papers presented at the meeting.

One of the problems encountered when constructing a roadway is the planned route often needs to cross soils that are soft and highly compressible. An approach to dealing with soft and compressible soils is to construct the fill from lightweight materials, thereby reducing the stresses on underlying soils. Most lightweight fills have approximately the same cost, so the most important consideration when choosing a lightweight fill is that the material properties of the lightweight fill match the conditions existing at the site. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been used as a lightweight fill material for more than 30 years. The EPS used for road fills is typically in the range of 0.5 to 2 lb/ft3, and has a compressive strength of in the range of 10 to 30 lb/in2. If a higher strength material is needed, then the material density is increased, which also adds to the cost of the material. Another type of lightweight fill material that is commonly being used is lightweight aggregate (LWA). LWA can be created by passing slate or shale through a rotary kiln or reheating coal fly ash with other materials to form pellets or aggregate. Several companies throughout the U.S market these materials under a variety of names. LWA can have a unit weight from 45-80 lb/ft3. For sites where trucking granular fill does not pose a problem, this material may be an alternative to EPS. One of the drawbacks to using LWA is the availability of the material. Only a few companies are manufacturing LWA, so it may not be available or may be cost prohibitive in certain areas of the country. Lightweight flyash blocks have been produced which may fill the gap in unit weight between the EPS and LWA. Blocks have been produced with a unit weight as low as 30 lb/ft3. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to handle, and have a moderate compressive strength. Although the unit weight is dramatically higher than EPS, the strength is also higher. If lateral stabilization of the fill is a problem, then geofabrics or grids can be incorporated into the design to add lateral strength.

INTRODUCTION Mine waste monitoring and management is essential when the industry is being required to accept the environmental liability for all generated, stored and disposed solid and hazardous waste. Environmental regulations mandate the operator to minimize waste production while requiring the operator to cleanup existing contamination. Since these requirements are being enforced, many operators do not have a clear under- standing, whether their existing operation will or could be required to adopt remedial plans to mitigate off-site contamination impacts. The following methods, using conventional and advanced geostatistical methods, provide a tool to make appropriate assessments whether existing or potential contaminant issues are present. BACKGROUND Generated solid wastes from mining operations are currently exempt from Solid Waste Disposal Act (SWDA) Sub- title C (RCRA), statutes and promulgated regulations, however, compliance with SWDA Subtitle D statutes and regulations is required. In order for the mining operator to be exempt from hazardous waste regulations, the operator must demonstrate that generated waste does not have hazardous waste characteristics. In many instances the operator will be able to use statistical tools and their existing data to determine whether their site could be a potential hazardous waste liability. METHODS The following statistical and geostatistical methods can be used to determine whether existing wastes could be a regulatory concern. The following presents a brief discussion of standard statistical methods and discusses, in greater detail, how advanced geostatistical tools can be used to define potential waste issues. The following will discuss how data can be screened, "Data Filtering and Reporting"; how data can be evaluated using "Conventional Statistics"; followed by a detailed discussion o f "Geostatistical and Estimation Techniques" and "Statistical Modeling". Data Filtering and Reporting Data filtering is the simplest, but potentially the most powerful statistical tool because data can be easily sorted to meet regulatory reporting requirements. Filtering includes unions and intersections of data such as date, maximum and minimum values of one or several variables. Using the data base presented in "Mine Waste Data Base Management Procedures", Robinson and Hagar, 1987, an example of a filter group is presented.

INTRODUCTION The quantity of seepage that will be released from a tailings impoundment depends not only on the characteristics of the seepage control system, but also on the properties of the foundation soil or rock beneath the impoundment and the nature of the groundwater in the area. The interaction between various elements of the seepage control system and the influence the various characteristics of the site and impoundment have on seepage are the subject of this paper. The results of analyses are presented herein to indicate the nature and magnitude of the effect that the various factors will have on seep¬age losses. Analyses were conducted for a uranium mill tailings impoundment located in an area characteristic of many found in the western United States or Canada. A typical seepage control system consists of placement of either a clay or synthetic liner beneath the impoundment. In some cases an underdrain system may be placed on top of the liner to collect drainage from the tailings. The parameters that were varied in the analyses included those pertaining to the liner, underdrains and foundation strata. In general, it is shown that the seepage losses will vary in a complex manner depending on the interaction of the elements of the site and the seepage control system. As may be expected, the liner and underdrain systems have the most pronounced effect on controlling seepage. This paper deals with the quantity of seepage released from an impoundment However, the impact that seepage losses from an impoundment will have on the surrounding environment will depend on the rate at which contaminants will enter the groundwater and the nature of the groundwater flow itself. Consequently, when considering these results with regard to environmental impact they must be interpreted along with considerations of geochemical factors. MECHANICS OF SEEPAGE The mechanics of seepage and methods of analysis that were used will be discussed briefly herein. For a more detailed discussion the reader is referred elsewhere (McWhorter and Nelson, 1978, 1979, 1980). A general column through the impoundment was considered to be as shown in Fig. 1.

Introduction The reclamation of mine/mill tailings areas is undertaken for a variety of objectives including safety, appearance, economical use of lands and forests and long term storage of a future resource. The establishing of criteria for these objectives at any site is a shared task of the government and mining company. Our attention in this paper is directed to uranium mine/ mill tailings as they are handled in the Canadian industry and in the unique Canadian climate. We focus our attention on the state of the art. Uranium is a ubiquitous mineral forming an average of 4 g per tonne of the Earth's crust. Ores are mined at about 500 g per tonne so that the residual content of uranium in tailings is comparable to average background levels. However, as in most mine/mill operations, the ore contains other minerals that become readily mobile after milling operations. Thus the main objective of tailings impoundment is the stability both physically and chemically of the mobile materials. Since the requirements for the operation and construction of tailings areas in Canada have changed considerably over the past decade, there exists a great many mine/mill tailings areas which while considered adequate in their day, would not meet modern criteria. However, most of these installations pose no concern or hazard to the public. The proximity of mine/mill development to inhabited land areas has necessitated more stringent modes of tailings operations and provisions for tailings site reclamation. The more important of these have been: 1) the prevention of dyke failure, with large liquid-solid outflows onto adjoining lands, and 2) the prevention of seepage from the tails of pollutants such as chlorides, sulphides, heavy metals and radionuclides. Uranium mill tailings are discharged as a slurry from the concentrator after the removal of generally only about 1000 g, or less, per tonne of uranium from the as-mined ore. As a consequence, a great volume of low level activity waste is generated. Raman Spectroscopy has become increasingly popular as a method to rapidly identify and characterize minerals, gem stones and other inorganic materials. Raman spectroscopy provides valuable information about the chemical bonds and structure of materials. In fact, the peak locations and intensities observed in a Raman spectrum can often be used to confirm the presence or absence of particular species in a sample. Some modern Raman spectrometers have been designed to analyze samples less than a micron in size while others are designed to rapidly screen bulk material with no sample preparation. Recent advances in software and automated instrument control have greatly reduced the complexity of Raman spectral analysis and provide an easy-to-use tool for analyzing minerals. We will describe the application of several multivariate statistical analysis techniques that have been developed to make use of the spectral libraries. In these techniques the spectrum is treated as a vector and sophisticated mathematical techniques are used to determine which spectral representations in the reference library best match the spectrum from the sample. The DXR Raman microscope was used to 1) Identify minerals by spectral searching, 2) Identifying several species in a sample using multi-component analysis 3) Mapping different species in an aggregate sample and 4) identifying inclusions in a sample.

Gentlemen : My object reads "Longwall Rapid Advance of Coal Mining in the Federal Republic of Germany". It is true that the percentage of coal obtained in your country from longwall faces, with at present 1.2, is still rather low, but it increased considerably since 1966 with 0.4 %. The coal mines of the Federal Republic of Germany ever used longwall as the classical method of coal getting. All attempts to introduce bord and pillar mining did not lead to any wider application of this method. The principal reasons, for this appear to have been: - the deeper depth of our workings, - the wish to keep working losses as low as possible and to utilize the deposits opened up by deep and therefore expensive shafts to the furthest possible degree, - the dense sequence of seams and the mutual influencing of the working points, - the high number of disturbances in the geologically much stressed deposits, - and the necessary considerations to the protection of the densely built-upon surface.

This paper presents comparison of proposed future solution and in-situ mining methods for in-situ leaching and recovery of uranium, gold, silver, and copper. We propose to show that in the future new extraction methods for each metal will eventually evolve for each hydrometallurgical process step, i.e. in-situ leaching, recovery, and concentration; precipitation and reduction; and drying, when required--without generating waste or bleed streams. In the future, to be highly profitable, these forms of mining will develop into an integrated system to eliminate waste streams using safe, powerful lixiviants. This integration will include, with some exceptions, improvements in the following areas of process development: 1. Lixiviant selection and in-situ leaching technique, 2. Target metal recovery and concentration (at a surface hydrometallurgical facility) from the circulating pregnant lixiviant stream, 3. Target metal precipitation or reduction, where decant water from the precipitate dewatering step is reusable for resin or solvent strip liquor (eluant), 4. Final preparation of target metal for sales, i.e. drying, purification, casting, packaging, 5. Restoration where most of the groundwater restoration process is performed at the same rate as multi-wellfield mining.

Coal bump, or coal burst, is one of the catastrophic disasters in underground coalmine. Among them, approximate 80% of recorded destructive burst events were occurred in mining roadway. The bump panel is often formed by hard coal seam and hard main roof; however, the cause and course of the bump events are not understood yet. This study provides a fundamental theory for the causality and progress of a coal bump event occurred in longwall roadway. Considering hard roof condition commonly existed in bump panels, we think that the abutment pressure induced by suspended roof behind the working face is the trigger of a coal bump event occurred in the roadway. Once high abutment pressure is concentrated on the hard coal seam around the working face, the roof and the coal around the working face form a seesaw-like structure, which leads the roof in front of the working face moving upwards. The movement of roof uplifting in front of the working face is a well evidenced phenomenon in practice, namely, roof rebounding, which causes unloading of the normal stress on the roof-coal interface around the roadway. A rib coal block bump mechanical model has been developed to establish the critical equilibrium equation of the coal block. Result shows that, the force source of coal bump is the horizontal ground stress perpendicular to the rib surface; and the slippage of the coal block is caused by the unloading of the normal stress acting on the roof-coal interface. Based on the causality and consequence theory of coal bump developed in the paper, several new prediction and prevention measures have been developed, including roadway design and in-tunnel reinforcing methods. The commonly used prevention measures in present have also been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of coal bumps occurred in longwall roadways, from abutment pressure at working face forming seesaw structure to roof rebounding leading slippage of the rib coal mass into roadway, which provides a fundamental theory for coal bump causality mechanism and prediction and prevention technology.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, tests were conducted with a commercial poly-fiber reinforced shotcrete mix to develop a practical means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength. Full-scale tests were conducted in a test frame equipped with concrete panels having three distinct surface roughness profiles. Adhesion test fixtures either embedded or epoxied in the shotcrete were overcored into the underlying concrete, and direct tensile tests were conducted to determine the bond strength of the shotcrete cores to the substrate after a selected shotcrete curing interval (1, 3, 7, 14, 28, or 90 days). Measured adhesion strengths typically ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa depending on the curing age of the shotcrete samples. This paper presents the results of these tests, describes the portable test system components, and addresses some of the design issues encountered in the development of a rugged and reliable method for determining shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines.

"INTRODUCTION Typical grinding electrification requirements are defined by high power, constant torque and slow speed. Dual pinion mills also include a need for tight tolerances in torque between the two motors, to avoid overloading any single motor. Standard induction (asynchronous) motors have often been used but only in combination with mechanical gearboxes (reducers), required to reduce process speed to the correct level for mill pinions. The gearbox introduces added system complexity, capital cost, maintenance and energy cost due to mechanical losses. SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS MOTORS Elimination of the gearbox requires a motor designed to operate at a very low speed (rpm). Traditionally, mill motor requirements were best served by synchronous motors. The benefits of synchronous motors include- • Higher Efficiency (no conductor losses in rotor) • Very high power at low speed • Flexible Power factor (leading or lagging) • Constant speed (not load dependent) • More accurate speed control Synchronous motor cost is higher due to construction complexity, need for exciter and excitation panel, brushes, brush lifters. Figure 1 represents the equivalent circuit for a synchronous motor.Asynchronous motors, also known as squirrel cage induction motors, are singly excited, per Figure 2, the resulting equivalency circuit is less complex and only in need of a single voltage source.Commonly, a DC voltage supply is connected to the rotor (both physically and electrically) via brushes. The DC voltage enables the production of flux in a single direction. The brushes are connected to rings. The slip rings encircle the rotor but are insulated from the rotor. The slip rings are connected to a rotor winding known as a field winding. On large motors, brushless exciters are often used. A brushless exciter is a small AC generator whose field circuits are mounted on the stator and armature circuits are mounted on the rotor shaft. The exciter generator’s 3-phase output is rectified to DC by a 3-phase rectifier (mounted on the shaft) and fed into the main DC field circuit. It is possible to adjust the field current on the main machine by controlling the small DC field current of the exciter generator (located on the stator). [1] Brushless synchronous motors are often preferred over the traditional brush design but introduce additional complexity to motor construction in the form of additional windings and rectifiers comprising the excitation circuit. It stands to reason that because of the additional complexity, a synchronous motor will be higher in cost than an equally rated asynchronous induction machine."

Automation technology has many facets, some well tested and proven, some yet to be put to the acid test of economic reality. In this paper, we will limit our purview to the former. Consider, if you will, an automated handling system combining high-speed conveyors and automatic devices on-line which not only provide signals for routing and sorting, but also format those signals for the production of manufacturing, inventory, shipping and billing paperwork. This is not futuristic, but practical and a realistic accomplishment. Therefore, the following discussions will address today's challenges not with tomorrow's solutions, but rather, with an established technology which is playing an increasingly prominent role in materials handling systems. Until recently, relatively modest importance has been attached to the timeliness of information feedback from the production or assembly line, warehouse or distribution center. Thus, initial applications of automatic identification equipment focused almost exclusively upon the control of materials flow - that is, routing, sorting, etc. However, these systems have performed successfully and quietly established an enviable track record as reliable materials control tools.

A river delivers a given load of sand, and hence of heavy minerals, into the sea into which it empties. This load is fixed by drainage basin characteristics and processes. Wave energy available for redistributing that load is fixed in an entirely different way. An equilibrium diagram of these two parameters (load versus energy) permits a tentative prediction of what will happen to the heavy minerals. The Chattahoochee River delivers a load which, over the past few thousand years, appears to have been greater than the available coastal energy could handle. As a result, much of the sand has been accumulated in various delta-margin features: barrier islands, beach ridges, and large furrowed off-shore shoals. The bulk of the trapped sand is found today in the shoals, which are attractive deposits for possible exploitation. If coastal energy levels are high enough to move the total load delivered by the river, accumulations of sand (and hence of heavy minerals) should be sought in the down-drift direction. Energy levels are rarely constant over any great length of coast. Decreases in energy may be due to widening of the shelf, convexity of, the shore, restrictions on the fetch, wave decay, or other causes. Such decreases result In deposition. Hydrodynamic mapping of coastal areas, as outlined here, should prove useful in the location of additional reserves. Part of this type of work can be done on maps, charts, and air photos.

In mid 1978 Inland Cement Industries Ltd. brought on-line their new one million megagram (Mg) per year cement plant at Tilbury Island, Delta, British Columbia. The Plant--Its Philosophy of Design The design of this plant began in 1974, at the beginning of the rapid rise in petroleum costs later referred to as the "energy crisis". The trend in fuel costs was clear, so one of the basic criteria for the selection of process equipment was high thermal efficiency. Throughout the process of selection of materials handling and process equipment, energy consumption was a factor in decisions. A second factor which influenced the design of the plant was its location on navigable water. The plant is designed to make maximum use of this means of transport to minimize transportation costs. All raw materials (and some fuel) are received by water, and a major portion of the cement and clinker is sent out by barge. Extensive modern dock and material handling facilities were provided to accomplish the shipping and receiving functions. A plant meeting stringent environmental regulations was the third major factor which formed the basis for design. To meet this requirement, all storage facilities had to be covered, 53 bag type dust collectors were applied throughout the plant, and materials handling equipment was designed to minimize dust and spillage.

"Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading minerals and coal fines. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Further, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically, forcing companies to discard part of the ultrafine materials to impoundments. To overcome these problems, a new method of separating and simultaneously dewatering ultrafine particles has been developed. Following extensive laboratory-scale test work, the process, known as hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation (HHS), has been tested successfully in continuous operations at proof-of-concept (POC)- and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the HHS process is capable of producing high quality clean coal with high recoveries and low moistures. INTRODUCTION Coal preparation plants are designed with up to four parallel processing circuits for treating coarse (> 12 mm), intermediate (12x1 mm) small (1x0.15 mm), and fine (<0.15 mm) particles. The plus 0.15 mm fractions can be effectively cleaned efficiently with gravity separation methods (Wills, 2006). At present, the only commercially viable option for cleaning the finest fraction is froth flotation (Yoon et al., 1999). In flotation, air is dispersed in the form of small air bubbles in a tank in which coal fines are suspended. The small air bubbles selectively collect the hydrophobic coal particles and float to the surface, forming a froth phase which overflows into a launder. As is well known, ultrafine coal particles of less than 30-50 µm are difficult to be collected by the air bubbles, resulting in low recoveries. Furthermore, fine particle flotation suffers from low carrying capacities and poor selectivity due to entrainment problems. (Bethell et al., 2005; Luttrell et al., 2014). Mechanical dewatering in general becomes inefficient with decreasing particle size due to small cake porosity and high surface area, resulting in high moistures (Hucko et al., 1988). In 1977 Kawasaki Steel Corporation (KSC) built No. 6 BF (Blast Furnace) with an inner volume of 4 500m3 as part of our program to produce 8.5 million tons of crude steel a year at Chiba Works. As the primary raw material to be used in No. 6 BF, we decided to use sintered ore, because we were confident in the obvious advantages of our technology developed by that time on sintering and BF operation using sintered ore. At Chiba Works, however, we had no space for the construction of a sinter plant, so we decided to build it abroad. Sintered ore is easily crushed and degradated. Producing sintered ore at a point far away from the blast furnace and transporting it across the ocean was the world&apos;s first attempt. To successfully realize it, we conducted a series of fundamental surveys and studies with special stress on the real aspects of degradation of sintered ore caused by long-distance transportation and handling and the ways and means to prevent the degradation. As a result, we decided to build a plant on the Mindanao of the Philippines.

Hydrolytic stripping is the process whereby metal ions in a loaded solvent extractant are hydrolyzed by water, typically at 130°-200°C. Equilibrium hydrolytic stripping tests were done on Versatic 10 solutions of various metals, singly and in mixtures. Single solutions of Fe, Xi, Cu, Mg, and tin precipitated aFe2O3, Ni(OH)2, Cu2O, Mg(OH) 2 and ?Mn203 respectively during hydrolytic stripping. Several mixtures containing iron precipitated magnetic spinel ferrites, MFe20k. No other combinations formed mixed oxides. It is proposed that the mechanisms for hydrolysis and precipitation of iron in loaded Versa- tic solutions are similar to those for iron hydrolysis in aqueous solutions. Infrared spec- troscopy and thin-layer chromatography of mixed iron-nickel Versatic solutions indicated that mixed Fe-Ni carboxylate complexes are present. Magnetic interactions between mixed complexes are thought to be responsible for the homogeneous nucleation of magnetic mixed oxides in preference to single oxides.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solution of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solutions is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit.
