A single stage ball mill-cyclone circuit was extensively tested for its reactions to step changes in three controllable variables: feed rate, water to cyclones, and water to the ball mill. A series of carefully designed tests are to be carried out in order to determine relationships between the various ball mill and cyclone parameters. Cyclone overflow particle size distribution is to be continuously monitored during the tests using an ultrasonic device. Other circuit variables that are to be measured and recorded are feed rate, ball mill mass flow, cyclone feed and overflow densities, cyclone feed sump level, water flows, etc. Once the circuit performance is defined, two types of grinding circuit control systems will be evaluated: (a) mass flow-based; (b) particle size- based. Results obtained by each approach in terms of feed rate and cyclone overflow size distributions are discussed. The high sensitivity of continuous particle size measurements to grinding circuit disturbances is emphasized.

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose over the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker?s daily activities. Observations about the worker?s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks, so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the Action Level or the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit. The software generates a variety of interactive onscreen displays showing where, when, and how the worker?s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations, and times that are associated with the greatest amount of the worker?s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise over-exposure of their workers.

In assessing the future markets for a mineral from a producing district, three key aspects must be considered: 1) the future growth in markets, 2) the competitiveness of the district in terms of production costs and reserve adequacy, and 3) the competition from alternative sources of supply. This paper will focus on the first issue by developing a method of predicting the demand for phosphate from the trends in the major markets for phosphate products, primarily the fertilizer and agricultural markets. The paper will show how broad changes in the final end use markets for phosphate products have evolved over time and how this has affected the needs for phosphate rock. These trends are then projected into the future to make an assessment of future phosphate requirements.

The application of multiple point statistics (MPS) in oil studies has gained traction over the years; however, the use of MPS in mineral resource estimation and classification is still limited. This is despite MPS’ ability to deal with complex and heterogeneous geology better than the commonly applied two-point based methods. The availability and choice of a representative training image (TI) are often cited as the main challenge holding back MPS’ application in mining geostatistical studies. On the other hand, the general approach used in mining whereby early focus is on higher grade areas and lower grades are planned to be mined later presents a massive opportunity for the development of representative TIs. Mined-out areas provide large amounts of historical data that can be used to develop training images or training datasets that can be used to estimate in mining extension areas (often lower in grade), provided low grade areas are underpinned by similar geology analogue. This approach will enable more robust estimates in mine/pit extension areas for both high- and low-grade extensions than with traditional two-point geostatistical methods.

Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

The power sector in India has an installed capacity of 267.637 GW as on March 2015. Out of this total installed capacity, the hydropower sector contributes 41,267.43 MW as renewable energy source. The development of various proposed hydropower schemes in India are primarily concentrated in mountainous regions of Himalaya and often involves underground tunnelling. Underground tunnelling of considerable magnitude is generally associated with adverse geological conditions and associated geological surprises. The main objective in case of Tunnels constructed especially for hydro projects, which carry enormous quantum of water is that, it should not leak. Moreover, the tunnels which are part of water conductor system should resist the inflow of water from the surrounding ground in order to avoid draining of natural water sources and lowering of existing groundwater levels. Lowering of water table may result in subsidence and damage to existing surface structures, loss of capacity of drinking water schemes and in some cases even catastrophic sliding of landmass. Grouting and pre-grouting in tunnels serve three different purposes i.e., Stabilization, Strengthening and sealing of the rock mass around tunnels to avoid leakage of water from tunnels. In present paper, results of grouting methodology adopted during final construction stage of RHEP (412 MW) along with the introspection of Water Pressure Tests conducted for determination of the efficacy of grouting were elaborately presented. The process, of contact and consolidation grouting which is respectively followed by water pressure tests along entire reach of HRT (15.177 Km long) were also addressed in detail. Pertaining to the results of water percolation tests (before and after consolidation grouting), it was also attempted to categorize the behaviour of different rock mass classes/ conditions in reference to different quantum of grout intake and corresponding Lugeon values. Importance of planned and dedicated successful grouting procedure adopted in hydropower project at RHEP is also emphasized.

A basic model has been developed to help assess methane control needs for longwall mining of coal in gassy areas. Rather than depending upon reservoir and rock mechanic theory, it uses an empirically-determined gas emission rate as an input and operates on the assumption that, within a specific region and zone, gas emissions will be relatively equivalent for uniform incremental volumes of gob created by mining. The computer program divides longwall panels into segments, keeps track of the face advance, and generates emission rates and volumes for both the entire panel and for individual zones within the panel by summing values for all undermined segments. This model can aid the determination of the number, size, and location of vertical wells or other methane control applications that are needed for gob gas control.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Mine drainage sludge consists of a variety of hydrous iron oxides, usually ferric oxides, contaminated with other neutralization products such as calcium sulfate. "The Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension Project is part of a metropolitan Program that was launched in 2009 by the Transportation Ministry of Quebec to add additional extensions to existing metro lines in the cities of Montreal, Longueil and Laval with the intention to meet current demand and future growth within the Montreal agglomeration. Specifically the Blue Line Extension Project will add five underground stations to the East of the Montreal. The paper addresses the preparation and the implementation of a three-step geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation program and preliminary design considerations such as the selection of a preferred horizontal and vertical alignment, the selection of construction methods based on previous local experience and current industry trends, as well as preliminary sizing of underground infrastructures. PROJECT BACKGROUND An agreement between the three mayors of the Montreal Metropolitan City agglomeration, namely, Montreal, Longueil and Laval prompted the Government of the Province of Quebec to create a project office to oversee the studies of extending the existing metro network. The last extension of the existing metro network was completed in 2008 with the Laval extension, which consisted of adding three stations from the existing Orange line. The current extension Program consists of three different extensions, namely extending the Orange Line to Laval and finishing the loop, extending the Blue Line to the East of Montreal by adding five stations, and adding five stations on the Southshore of the St-Lawrence River for the Yellow Line extension. The extension program also requires the construction of an underground storage and maintenance garage located to the north-west of the existing Cote-Vertu station on the Orange line. Figure 1 shows the overall extension program with the existing network."

Nassau County, New York, is undertaking several projects to improve the water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major step forward will be the completion of the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which will divert most treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 miles of microtunneling, 7 miles of sliplining, 14 shafts, and a 75 MGD pump station. This paper provides an overview of the design and an update on construction progress through December 2022. The project is a collaborative effort between Nassau County, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the design-builder, and various consultants.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. "INTRODUCTION Contemporary city is made of layers. Physical structures layers (built fabric, residential, commercial industrial etc. ), infrastructural layers (below and above ground), “green” layers (parks and open spaces), and also informational layers, i.e. connections, links, between sectors of the city and other territories. The “city of layers” concept represents the exercise of “rebuilding the city” per each layer, highlighting those physical built structures that are functional to define a relation. For example, if consider the “connection” relation, the city is re-designed by considering only transportation built structures. The layer obtained in such fashion is hence the “transportation” layer, including below grade infrastructures (subways) and above grade lines (rail, bus, tramways etc.), as below shown in Figure 1.In this sense, the contemporary city is represented by separate constructs assembled together according to a specific functionality (e.g. “connection”). As a consequence, the relation between what is built underground, and the related above-ground development, can be perceived in his most evident appearance. What could happen within the contemporary city if the planning process would begin from below to above and not vice-versa?INTERACTION The question risen in the introduction is strategic when approaching the difficult task of designing (or re-designing) a multi-level organism like the contemporary city. Nowadays, the theme of integration between underground and at-grade master planning has become the subject of many urban renovation projects, where the design process has begun within the transportation layer, underground, and further developed by interacting with at-grade structures already existing or in phase of design.A series of case studies where below/above interaction plays a key role in the project will be further analyzed. Moreover, it is relevant to understand the mechanics of an urban transformation process that originates within the transportation layer and ends up with the design of entire sectors of the city. The Transit Oriented Development approach is a useful tool to clearly understand such transformation process. TOD has become, in particular in the last decade, one of the most effective tools for urban design, in order to solve simultaneously the many different instances related to transit planning, urban design and real estate market."

Water infiltration into subgrade infrastructure can cause major impacts on their performance. In addition to damaging the structure, water intrusion leads to deterioration of installations including electrical and mechanical components and in patron discomfort. To remedy these impacts, leak remediation is often carried out to halt water infiltration. Remediation methods include coatings, drainage, injection/stitch grouting, curtain (backside) grouting, and/or internal umbrella systems. Selection of the rehabilitation method depends on the structure’s use, owners’ priorities, its installations, structural conditions, surrounding ground, and hydrogeologic conditions. Since many factors influence the rehabilitation method chosen, a novel holistic approach is undertaken to understand leakage causes and consequences to develop the most appropriate, efficient, and reliable solution to extend the structure’s life. A reconnaissance phase combines geologic, hydrogeologic, and as-built information with detailed digital scans and visual observations to develop a database of existing conditions. This database, called a tunnelband, is used to develop the rehabilitation solution and made part of the contract documents, allowing for an informed bid by specialty contractors. Tunnelband and the preferred rehabilitation system are portrayed in contract documents, which are procured in various contract types depending on the owner’s preference and project characteristics. The pool of contractors are required to submit their understanding of this holistic approach by developing and supplying the owner with a detailed workplan. The completed rehabilitation is portrayed in detailed as-built drawings which also provide the owner with an operation and maintenance manual outlining for periodic observation of the structure and checking of its performance. Ultimately, this information is implemented into a “BIM Digital Twin” that is used by the operations and maintenance staff for long-term observations. This proposed novel framework for leak rehabilitation is currently being used successfully in a number of projects throughout the United States.

A 4.5-mile-long, 96-inch-diameter outfall pipeline was constructed between North Texas Municipal Water District’s proposed Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility and the Stiff Creek Discharge Structure. Two TBM-mined tunnel segments were excavated for the outfall pipeline through rock and mixed-face conditions within the Austin Chalk Formation. The TBM mining performance was tracked in detail and evaluated during mining. This paper discusses the TBM configuration, TBM utilization, advance rates, and challenges of both tunnel segments.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

In 2015, the Subtropolis Mine in Petersburg, OH, experienced a massive ground collapse that continues to grow over time. Horizontal stress effects have affected the roof at this operation in the past and may have played a large role in this collapse. Horizontal stress can impact the roof and floor stability and endanger the health and safety of underground stone miners. Mines experiencing damaging effects from horizontal stress typically find that the principal stress direction is the same throughout the mine and the region. At the Subtropolis Mine the principal horizontal stress direction appears to change as conditions change and differs from the regional horizontal stress, particularly near the collapse or other roof fall areas. The growth over time of this collapse and other roof falls have been captured and analyzed using geologic mapping, 3D LiDAR scanning, numerical modeling and geographic information systems like ArcGIS. Utilizing these tools to better understand sitespecific conditions can be critical to reducing the potential of massive ground collapses in the underground limestone industry.

In 1910, Colonel Boyce Thompson, who owned Inspiration (now Cyprus Miami) and various other mining interests, formed the Magma Copper Company and leased the Silver Queen claims around Superior, Arizona. At the same time, he purchased other claims around the Silver Queen claims from what was then called the Magma Mine. The mine continued to operate until 1982 when Newmont Mining Company, who owned Magma Copper Company, shut down the operations due to high costs and low copper prices. When Magma was spun off by Newmont as an independent company in 1987, new studies of Superior were started. It was clear from these studies that the mine had been shutdown and over 1400 employees laid off for two basic reasons: first, as a resu1t of a mine plan that was technically flawed and second, be-cause of very high production costs mainly due to the low productivity from a very high cost work force. During 1989 a plan was formulated to re-open Superior with the determination to over-come the problems that resulted in closure. A new mine plan was developed and a management style developed that promotes team work and high productivity.

Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head.
