Vanadium is a transition metal, ductile and silver-gray. It is harder than most metals and steels and it has a good resistance to corrosion. It is stable against alkalis and sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is oxidized in air at about 660° C (1,220° F), although an oxide layer forms even at room temperature. The chemistry of vanadium is noteworthy for the accessibility of the four adjacent oxidation states, 2-5. In aqueous solution, the colors are lilac V2+, green V3+, blue VO2+ and, at high pH, yellow VO42-. Considered to be as abundant as zinc, metallic vanadium is not found in nature, but it is known to exist in about 65 different minerals. Economically significant examples include patronite (VS4), vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), associated to the uranium mineral carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2?3H2O) and in a vanadium mica called roscoelite K(V3+,Al,Mg)[(Si,Al)4O10] (OH)2. Other important vanadium ore oxides are montroseite (V,Fe)O(OH) and corvusite (Na,Ca,K)V8O2.4H2O. Much of the world?s vanadium mine production comes from magnetite-hosted deposits and, to a lesser extent, sedimentary-hosted sandstone.

The Coal Preparation Division of the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center conducted an investigation to assess and compare the pyritic sulfur reduction potential of coal-pyrite flotation and high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). Tests were run on three coals--an Upper Freeport bed coal, a Lower Kittanning bed coal, and a Pittsburgh bed coal--to establish grade- recovery relationships characteristic of both processes. Representative portions of each coal sample were crushed to two top sizes--nominal minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm) and nominal minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm)--and subjected to conventional froth flotation. The froth product was then beneficiated by coal-pyrite flotation or HCMS to provide a direct technical comparison of the two processes. At minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm), the size normally employed for coal flotation, both coal-pyrite flotation and HGMS effectively separated pyrite from coal, and the performance of the two processes was essentially the same. At a size of minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) , however, the performance of HGMS exceeded that of coal- pyrite flotation. The separations effected by HGMS were more efficient at minus 100 mesh (0.149 mm) than at minus 35 mesh (0.5 mm). On the other hand, it was concluded that either the effectiveness of coal-pyrite flotation decreases with diminishing top size, or the process has not been optimized to treat material finer than 35 mesh (0.5 mm).

The Dolph Mine fire site is located in Lackawanna County, PA, approximately three miles northeast of the city of Scranton. The fire was burning in both coal refuse (culm) and underground anthracite mine workings. It was reportedly begun by rubbish burning on top of a culm bank. A site investigation was completed in 2006 to define the extent of the fire and to recommend fire control measures. A cut off trench was selected as the principal control method. Plans and specifications were prepared in late 2006. The project was bid and a contractor selected in early 2007. The trench construction was completed in 2007. This paper describes the investigation and selection of the fire control method and discusses the trench construction.

This study seeks to define the mechanism of oxyanion sorption onto surfactant-modified zeolites. Zeolites which have been treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) surfactant to produce a hydrophobic surface are capable of sorbing both organic compounds as well as oxyanions such as chromate, selenate, and sulfate. Simple ion exchange and charge-balancing mechanisms do not fully explain this unusual phenomenon. The sorption of HDTMA surfactant appears to be partly ion exchange and partly sorption to non-ion-exchangeable sites. Sorption of chromate is a simple exchange mechanism with bromide, which co-adsorbs with HDTMA to form a surface precipitate. Information from this study will be used to design on-site and in situ treatment systems for contaminated water, such as filter beds and permeable barriers.

Geologic features such as structure (faults, folds, fractures, etc.), water bearing zones, aquifers, pemeability variations, and porosity variations are important for mine planning and in situ energy recovery processes. Features important for planning a mine will be important for planning the recovery of energy by in situ processes. Various geophysical techniques might be used to obtain the necessary geologic information. In this paper, case histories will be discussed of the use of electromagnetic geophysical surveys at a potential underground coal gasification site and a potential tar sand oil recovery site to obtain pertinent geologic information. Results show that the controlled source audio- frequency magnetotelluric technique shows promise for mapping faults and natural fracture systems when there is a sufficient resistivity contrast.

Discussion by A.E Agnew Strachan's paper summarizes a wealth of data on water-storage dam "incidents" published by USCOLD and ASCE in 1988, together with a review of tailings-dam incidents published by USCOLD in 1994. The data is summarized by text and 11 histograms. The histograms present a useful compilation of these data, although the patterns within the histogram blocks did not survive the Mining Engineering printing process - so their usefulness is impaired. Unfortunately, the text discussion is too cursory and does not highlight the significant relationships among the various causes of the incidents. Four paragraphs of text and Fig. 1 were devoted to water-storage dams, but the discussion is too sketchy, and Fig. 1 is unclear. Important statistics that could be uncovered are: •the total number of dam incidents tabulated were 500+, •earth embankments constituted 73% of those in operation and •incidents related to earth embankments were 75%, of which dam failures accounted for 24%, major repairs accounted for 42% and accidents accounted for 34%. Strachan concluded that "the majority of the dam failures are associated with overtopping (p. 49), and that the majority of incidents are associated with spillway and other facility structures" - although this is difficult to discern from Fig. 1. Confusion regarding Strachan's use of the terms "dam failures" and "incidents" is compounded by his use of "failures" and "accidents" in one paragraph of his Introduction section followed by his use of "incidents" in the next paragraph. Getting to the meat of Strachan's important paper, the tailings-dam incident survey (USCOLD, 1994), the connection between Figs 2 through 11 seems obscure. First, in the four paragraphs of introductory material, one learns that "incidents consisted of failures, accidents, seepage and other incidents of performance that did not meet design criteria" (p. 50). One does learn the helpful caveat that "structures not related to mill tailings were not included in the review" - so that the Buffalo Creek (West Virginia in 1972) and Aberfan (Wales in 1966) coal-mine failures, together with the ongoing metal-mine remediation work at Summitville (Colorado) do not muddy the waters of his paper. The all-too-brief discussion of the data shown in Figs. 3 through 11 (185 dams in USCOLD plus 26 dams in UNEP) reveals the following: •Figure 3: 57% of the incidents (failures and accidents) occurred with dams less than 20-m (66-ft) in height. •Figure 4: 63% of the incidents were due to failures alone (subset of Fig. 3). •Figure 5: Active dams had 82% of the accidents and 93% of the failures. •Figure 6: Types of dams (upstream, water-retention, downstream, centerline and "unknown") separated according to incidents. •Figure 7: Breaks out the incidents in Fig. 6 by failures, accidents and ground water. •Figure 8: Breaks out incidents by type (overtopping, slope stability, earthquake, foundation, seepage, structural, erosion, mine subsidence and "unknown"). •Figure 9: Separates Fig. 8 data into active and inactive dams. •Figure 10: Separates Fig. 9 data into failures and accidents. •Figure 11: Same as Fig. 8, but broken out by tailings-dam type (Fig. 6). "Fine coal separation has been always concerned. The froth flotation is not efficient in desulfurization because of the low rate of sulfide liberation from raw coal, the natural hydrophobicity caused by sulfur concentration on the surface of sulfide, and the presence of large amounts of middling feed. An efficient centrifugal gravity separator was employed to separate for Shandong –0.5mm high sulphur coal, the partition curve of centrifugal separator was obtained with conclusion that the Ecart probable error value of the separator is 0.095, the imperfection I value is 0.128. Finally, comparing with the coal flotation using progressive release method, the result shows that the effect of the desulfurization with centrifugal gravity force field based on density difference between coal and minerals are much better than that of the floatation which operates based on the difference in surface properties. It provides a efficient technical way for fine coal separation. INTRODUCTION Coal plays the most important role in the energy consumption in China. Although natural gas, wind energy, nuclear power has made great progress in recent years, but the share of coal in the final energy consumption accounts for 70-80%, which is determined by energy storage of China. Under the requirement of environmental protection, the clean utilization of coal resources becomes more and more important, and the need has already been identified. Coal washing and processing plays an important role in the process of high-efficiency and clean utilization of coal. For the separation of fine coal, flotation is a traditional method for effective separation and has been used in large scale industrial applications in coal preparation plant. However, for the separation of difficult-to float coal, especially fine oxidized coal and low–rank coal with hydrophilic surface, flotation is usually inefficient [1-3]. Although many pretreatment methods have been adopted, including grinding, microwave pretreatment, new flotation reagents, the problem of efficient separation has not been completely resolved [4-6]. Thus, an enhanced gravity separation method using particle density difference rather than hydrophobic difference was proposed for the separation of fine coal. Many research results have proved that this is a practical and effective method of sorting. R.Q. Honaker used Falcon C10 concentrator, Knelson centrifugal separator and spiral separator to clean the fine coal with size of 600*210 µm and 210*37µm, the effects of different operating parameters on the separation index was discussed. The results show that the separation density of Falcon can reach 1.6, and the Ep value can reach 0.1-0.15. This paper revealed that for the separation of fine coal with high sulfur content or fine grained content. Falcon has high separation efficiency with low cost. Separation results present in another paper showed that the desulfurization efficiency of inorganic sulfur was better than that of flotation [7-8]."

An entirely new concept in the effective utilization of magnetic, energy has resulted in a major break-through in the design of magnetic separation equipment. One of the first applications of this concept has resulted in the development of a Permanent Magnetic Wet Drum Separator with strength .and operating characteristics equal to Electro Wet Drum Separators. Prior to this development when strength and adjustability were required, electro wet drums were specified even with all their drawbacks. The electros, by nature, are subject to coil failure or burnout, over-heating and loss of strength, high power consumption and generally high maintenance. Now the high strength and the adjustability, formerly the exclusive property of electros, has been engineered into permanent wet drum separators. These units combine maximum field strength in the separation zone with strength adjustment to suit changing conditions. Adjustment can be effected while the drum is in operation without stopping either the feed or the drum.

Eastern Jamaica consists predominantly of non-carbonate rocks reaching elevations of over 2200 m. The area is drained by a well established river network which supplies close to 30% of the sand and gravel used by the building and construction sector. Present high extraction rates and slow rates of replenishment will result in early exhaustion of this source of aggregate. A number of volcanic and carbonate rocks are being examined as a possible source of high quality aggregate which meet the requirements for all types of construction. Preliminary evaluations show a dacitic deposit to be the most suitable source for aggregate use.

The evolution of longwall mining is briefly traced from its inception in England in the 1620's. In the beginning this method recovered 90% of coal with roof closure controlled by packs and walls. Mechanization began with kerf cutting, crude face conveyors, and improved face support. Full face mining was accompanied by the introduction of self-advancing hydraulic supports. U.S. longwalls evolved a retreating system to recover blocks of coal outlined by room and pillar panels. Computer control combined with the most modern technology has greatly increased productivity. Past trends are used to predict future technological directions.

No academic program of reasonable duration can provide a geologist with all the skills that may be needed for applied work in industrial minerals, but any curriculum that does not provide background in such basic subdisciplines as mineralogy-petrology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, structure, and geomorphology will leave the practitioner handicapped. Enough geochemistry to understand materials requirements, and sufficient geophysics to utilize geophysical data, are essential. In addition to purely scientific considerations, the industrial minerals geologist must be able to evaluate economic factors and may be faced with legal, social, and political problems in land use, zoning, environmental protection, and reclamation.

The thickening and dewatering characteristics of refuse slurries are as variable as the coal mining operations and preparation plants that create them. This paper discusses these characteristics based on field studies at a number of mine sites. The connection between bench and full scale performance is confirmed with the design, construction and operation of an integrated 18m (60 ft) diameter thickener and 2.5 meter belt filter press system in Western Kentucky. The data from this system are presented.

"Mining of ore bodies that are located at great depths enforces long distances to move the excavated rock masses to the surface. The excavated rock mass contains not only ore that can be economically extracted from the face but also waste, which is usually discarded several steps further downstream in the process. As a result, a large amount of rock is transported to the surface, influencing the costs at which the ore is produced. Reducing the amount of waste rock being transported to the surface by introducing a near-to-face sorting plant would improve the in many cases strained transport system in the deep mine. In this study, one of Boliden’s cut-and-fill mines was analysed with respect to the challenges related to rock transportation and increasing mining depth. The study aims to evaluate the potential use of a new near-to-face sorting system in the operating underground mine. Discrete event simulation was used to study and analyse the rock transportation system with and without the near-to-face sorting plant. The paper shows how the underground rock transportation system and the production were influenced when the near-to-face sorting equipment was added into the current system. INTRODUCTION The locations of waste rejection in the mining processes and the cost of removing waste from the system compared with the cost and energy necessary for further comminution are important parts in the material handling system (Bowman and Bearman, 2014). In an underground mine, longer material transportation distances generate the need for further investment in the mobile fleet and ancillary equipment in order to reduce the waste from the material handling as early as possible. One of the ways of reducing the waste (coarse particle size) in material handling is by use of pre-concentration. The benefits of pre-concentration are well known (Schena et al. 1990; Feasby, 1995; Peters et al. 1999; Klein et al. 2002), as well as the factors governing the feasibility of underground pre-concentration (Peters et al., 1999) and the mining integration issues (Klein et al. 2003). In the Onaping Depth orebody in Sudbury, Ontario the study of implementing the pre-concentration resulted in increased capital costs of 6% and a reduction in the operating costs of between 20-40% (Bamber et al, 2004). In this paper, the effects on the production and the transportation system of implementing underground pre-concentration by means of a near-to-face ore sorting plant in the Kristineberg mine are modeled and analyzed using the AutoMod tool. This tool is based on discrete event simulation (DES) (Banks, 2004), allowing high flexibility in customization and enabling the user to view the production of the system before ore sorting plant integration. The sorting plant selected in the simulation is built from modules. The material is fed by conveyor and goes through the comminution, classification, sorting and service processes after which the waste is redirected to backfill headings via trucks. The system mechanically ejects the particles from the feed stream on the basis of the information obtained from both the XRT sensor’s signal and 3D laser scanner based on both density and rate of refraction of light within a particular mineral. The sorting plant could pre-concentrate the metal ore up to 300 mm size. The plant requires little auxiliary infrastructure, is easily modularized for underground installation and can be easily relocated to different areas."

The significance and role of industrial minerals in Canada differ from those in the United States, The smaller Canadian industry has recently become well diversified and self-sufficient in most commodities, However, it depends on exports, principally to the United States, for much of its market, Imports are small, but imports of several basic products manufactured from industrial minerals are large. This nation is a leading world producer of asbestos, gypsum, sulphur, nepheline syenite, titania slag, potash and barite. It has reserves in asbestos for at least 30 years enough potash to supply the current world's needs for 2,000 years and sulphur reserves for 40 years of current world demand, One of the ilmenite deposits contains enough titania to supply the current world demand for at least, 25 years.

Teleoperation is a technology that can provide significant health and safety improvements in mining, by relocating machine operators hundreds of meters away from the face area. The U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a teleoperation system for continuous mining and haulage equipment. This system features near-real-time closed-loop control. A prototype system was developed and demonstrated on the surface. This system could be used in thin-seam applications down to 914 mm. Details are provided on the developed teleoperation system, results of testing, and expected, future applications of this technology for improved safety.

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

"The Earth’s properties, composition and structure ahead of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be mapped for hazard assessment during excavation. We study the use of seismic-exploration techniques for this purpose. We focus on a seismic system for soft soils, where shear waves are better and easier to interpret than compressional waves, as has been shown over the last decade. The system is intended to be deployed on the machine’s cutter head, with a few seismic sources and sufficiently many seismic sensors to tackle spatial variability and noise characteristics. An important property of the newly developed system is its ability to process data with very little human interaction. Images need to be available in near real time, without human interactions slowing down the imaging process. This can be achieved by employing Full Waveform Inversion, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed data. Because this method may suffer from local minima in the cost function if the data lack low-frequency information, we employ a dedicated seismic source that can generate sufficiently low frequencies for the relevant length scales. With data acquired in a number of field settings that mimic realistic TBM configurations, we show that the designed seismic system can successfully look ahead of the TBM and offers a valuable capability to support decision-making during tunnel excavation. INTRODUCTION While excavating a tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the geology and the ground conditions along the planned tunnel trajectory need to be investigated in order to safely and efficiently carry out the underground operations. This entails detecting the occurrence of boulders, foundations, pipes and faults, necessary to prevent hazards and time-consuming delays in the tunnel boring operations. In order to facilitate ground prediction ahead of a TBM, techniques as used in seismic exploration can be deployed. Two components common to seismic-exploration techniques are data acquisition and processing, the latter including inversion. We will discuss each of these for the application to tunnel excavation with TBM, in particular for soft soils."

The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant has been studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, pH of the solution, iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium was investigated. It was found that high temperature and high pH of the solutions were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.77 kJ/mole.
