Cable bolts anchored with traditional two component polyester resin cartridges have successfully supported difficult roof conditions in underground mines. Resin cartridges provide a cost-effective cable bolt anchoring system with consistent anchorage performance characteristics when properly installed. The most commonly used cable bolts in the U.S. mining industry are 270 ksi (1,862 MPa), 0.7 and 0.6 inch (18 and 15 mm), seven-strand smooth cable with resin mixing bulbs (also known as bird cages), and 40- and 30-ton nominal capacity, respectively. However, there are other types of cable bolt anchoring systems aside from bird cages. Recently, many questions have been raised regarding the anchorage characteristics of various types of cable bolts. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), the affiliated engineering company of Jennmar Corporation, conducted a variety of controlled tests developed to closely model actual underground installations. These tests compared the performance of three commonly used cable bolt varieties, including plain, bird caged and indented seven-strand cable. Details of the laboratory testing and comparative analysis of the results are provided.

ITmk3®(Iron Technology Mark III) is an innovative new ironmaking technology whereby high quality iron nuggets are produced directly from iron ore fines and coal in a rotary hearthfurnace1). The reaction mechanism has been investigated in detail through fundamental laboratory research2)3), and the ITmk3 process has progressed from the laboratory to commercialization by the success of the pilot plant tests initiated at Midrex’ Technical Center and at the Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) located at Kobe Steel Ltd. Kakogawa Steel Works4)5). Pilot operations have demonstrated rapid production of the iron nuggets with complete metal/slag separation at a relatively low operating temperature. The Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) in Japan has logged 21 days continuous operation during which high quality iron nuggets were produced directly from fine ore and coal. The operation technology and the engineering data obtained from these pilot tests were instrumental for the scale-up of the ITmk3 process for the Mesabi Nugget Corp. pilot demonstration plant, which is located at Cleveland Cliffs Inc. Northshore Mining iron ore pellet plant in Silver Bay, MN. The ITmk3 process is an ideally suited technology for siting at the iron ore mine, as it allows the economical production of a value-added merchant iron product.

Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. Anecdotal reports of high rates of congenital malformations and spontaneous abortions at the Shiprock Indian Health Service Hospital in San Juan County, New Mexico prompted an interview survey, obtaining data from families of 26 former uranium miners and 30 controls. Results supported the possibility of increased fetal wastage and congenital malformations. However, definitive conclusions were obviated by methodologic limitations in terms of selection of cases and controls and interviewing technique, as well as very low numbers and lack of statistical significance. The Council of Environmental Quality (1980) published a report which singled out San Juan County, nationally, as having an extra-ordinary high rate of congenital anomalies reported from birth certificates in the years 1973-75. San Juan County is in the northwest corner of New Mexico and includes the northeastern edge of the Navajo Indian Reservation. It has been the site of uranium mining and milling and also of coal mining (Clement Associates, 1980). While much attention has been focused on lung cancer and chronic lung disease as health hazards to uranium miners, virtually no attention has been focused upon possible reproductive effects that may result from exposure to radiation. Could these reports indicate such an additional arena of health effect either on miners or on others living in the vicinity of the mines and mills? The biologic and epidemiologic literature does not lend much support for adverse genetic outcome. The UNSCEAR report (UNSCEAR, 1977) summarizes much of the existing data. For example, on the basis of many animal studies and what has been observed in atom bomb survivers in Japan, it has been estimated that mutation rates resulting from low LET radiation to paternal germ cells would be 60 X 10-6 recessive and 20 X 10-6 dominant mutations per gamete per rad. There would be a five-fold increase in the number of recognizable abortions. The doubling dose for genetic disorders in mice is estimated at 100 rads. The assumption has been that low levels of exposure, such as might be received occupationally from uranium mines and mills or environmentally will produce reproductive effects that would defy distinction from background rates. However, the possibility can not be dismissed. In man, spermatogonia are thought to be three-fold more sensitive than in the mouse. Also, the high LET radiation from alpha particles is as much as 20-fold more effective in inducing changes in meiotic and post meiotic stages of cells, compared with low LET radiation. There is some degree of localization of alpha emitters in testicular tissue after inhalation of radon and radon daughters (Blanchard, R.L. and Moore, J.B., 1971; Pohl, E., 1964). The slopes of doseeffect curves are affected by type radiation and rate of administration. Data on such curves are poorly defined and debated as to whether there may be increased or decreased effect per unit dose at low levels of high LET radiation. Increased rates of aberrations of chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes cultured from uranium miners have been reported (Brandom, W.F., et al., 1978). At cumulative exposures of 100 working level months (WLM) or less, a range of exposure lower than the limit of current occupational standards, the aberrations were increased more than two-fold. Our interest has led us to pursue the question of reproductive effects along three separate paths of inquiry: studies of the secondary sex ratio, cytogenetic study of human sperm, and studies of rates of congenital anomalies. I will present the thrust of our findings, most of which remain preliminary, comment on their interpretation and limitations, and indicate directions needed for future research. The secondary sex ratio is the ratio of males to females at birth. In the U.S., the ratio averages around 1.05. Ratios in blacks are somewhat lower (1.025) than in whites (1.053). For American Indians, the data are less definite. Values from Oklahoma and California are similar to whites (1.05). Southwestern tribes have, as we shall see, varying levels. The theoretical effects on sex ratio resulting from irradiation of the zygote are based on the principles of sex-linked genetics, including differential effects of lethal dominant and recessive mutations on the sex chromosomes, complicated by possible non-disjunctional events. Observations have done little to clarify, confirm or refute the theories. The sex ratio of progeny of survivers of the atomic bomb showed little change (Schull, W.J., Otake, M., and Neel, J.V., 1981). Observations in children of uranium miners having been inconsistent. Most frequently cited is a study of miners in Czechoslovakia (Müller, C., Razicka, L., and Bakstein, J., 1967). Compared with children born to miners prior to the start of mining, the sex ratios of children born after the start of mining were decreased -statistically significant after correcting for birth order. The ratios in first-born children were, before the start of mining, 1.118, and, after the start of mining, .713. In the interview survey at Shiprock, the sex ratio in families of non-miners was 1.03, and in families of miners it was 0.73 (p < .05). Dr. Alan Goodman at the University of New Mexico has studied trends in the sex ratio in the general population in New Mexico and Arizona with particular reference to counties in the Four Corners area and the Navajo Indian Reservation, areas where uranium mining has been active_ His findings (unpublished) are as follows: (1) Beginning in the early 1950&apos;s, there has been a modest, but persistant and statistically significant decline in the secondary sex ratio for the state of New Mexico compared with the U.S., a decline that roughly parallels the emergence of uranium mining in the Grants mineral belt in northwestern New Mexico. (2) Data available for the 11 years since 1969 show that among the five counties with ratios significantly lower than the state

Open-pit mines in the US and throughout the world are typically characterized by increasing operating costs and decreasing ore grades. Thus, companies must continue to improve their use of human and technological resources to remain competitive in the marketplace. Duval Corp. has historically been very sensitive to mining costs, in part because of relatively low grade copper-molybdenum ore bodies. These concerns have resulted in three haulage system generations at the 218 kt/d (240,000 stpd) Sierrita-Esperanza open-pit mine south of Tucson, AZ. Each generation has exceeded the performance of the one replaced. The latest system of portable crushers and conveyors reduces hauling costs by combining both hardware and technique. Savings are achieved not only bysubstituting conveyors for haul trucks, but also by permitting the crusher-convey or system to closely follow mining as the pit deepens and/or mining areas change location. The Duval system is capable of easy and inexpensive relocation in varying site configurations in relatively short time periods. Its implementation in active mining areas results in minimum disruption to both the mine operation and mine design. This haulage concept allows the mining engineer maximum freedom to design an open pit for profit rather than for equipment. Maximum savings with a portable system are achieved by minimizing truck haulage costs. At Sierrita, for example, the yearly estimated operating cost savings for each thousand feet of +10% truck ramp replaced by conveyors is about $1 million per portable crusher. A savings of $30 million could be achieved fora three-portable system overa 10 year period simply by reducing the average truck Iiftto the crusher by 30 m (100 ft), There is also the added capital expense of buying trucks to cover the additional 30 m (100 ft) of lift. Relocation costs are an important consideration in a portable system. Direct costs can become a significant operating expense if frequent relocations are necessary to take full advantage of potential haulage cost savings. A site preparation cost of $375,000, for example, would add an additional operating cost of 2.8¢/t(2.5¢/st) for a system handling 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy), assuming one move a year, In addition to the direct cost of site preparation, such as installation of retaining walls, apron feeder slots, and equipment pads, there is the cost of site renovation after abandonment. Indirect relocation costs, while less tangible and more dependent on specific mine design and scheduling, can be of significance. A slowdown in the mining rate or a less efficient mining plan can result from a site not being immediately available for mining after abandonment. Conversely, mining in narrow areas can be adversely affected if two or three month lead times are required for site preparation.

Introduction The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation will present its contribution to the A. M. Gaudin Flotation Symposium in four parts. The first two segments will discuss briefly the historical development of the Utah Copper Division and describe the ore body. The third segment will review the facilities and operating procedures for the Utah Copper Division&apos;s newest plant, the Bonneville Concentrator. The fourth segment describes flotation process circuitry, including molybdenite recovery procedures, at the Arthur and Magna concentrators. (The Bonneville concentrator is a crushing and grinding unit and does not have its own flotation plant). 1. Historical Development Progress through change has been the key to the successful operation of the Utah Copper Division for more than 70 years. As the original low-grade copper operation, the pressures to remain competitive and profitable have dictated the timing and extent of each change. Much of the change has occurred through technological and economic advancements in the area of ore concentration. The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation had its origin June 4, 1903, when the Utah Copper Company was organized. The initial mill of 300 tpd (tons per day) capacity was built at Copperton a few miles below the present Bingham Canyon mine site. From 1904 to 1910, the Copperton mill was expanded to a capacity of 1,000 tpd, and all of the known apparatus for gravity concentration were evaluated.

The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. The ore reserve modelling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore-forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high-grade and low-grade drill hole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realtistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

The design of 6 km of tunnels, plus enlargements, deep shafts in glacial and sandstone deposits for the conversion of the existing LEP underground laboratory at CERN, Geneva adjacent to the Jura Mountains/Lake Geneva had to be undertaken in an operational environment and in conjunction with other underground constructions associated with the US$3bn refurbishment.

Direct mineral carbonation has been investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2 into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results have been achieved using heat pretreated serpentine feed material and high partial pressure of CO2 (PCO2). Specific conditions include: 155°C; P002=185 atm; 15% solids. Under these conditions, 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy has been utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products, and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths.

This paper focuses on maintenance of underground salt air curative quality using environmental friendly solutions. Possible ways to preserve its curative properties, in relation with the admissible salt air quality parameters, are analyzed. In situ investigations regarding microbiological impregnation in walls and the air inside the Romanian salt sanatorium were initiated. The results of a pilot project, which is in progress at Praid salt mine, are presented. After the end of the investigation at this site, investigations will continue in other Romanian salt mines, such as Slanic Prahova, Targu Ocna and Cacica.

For a better appreciation of this let&apos;s look into the a day of the life of a fellow named John, and see how much we depend on industrial minerals. The sounds of soft violins nudged John from his sleep. The melodic sounds of Beethoven&apos;s Pastoral coming from his radio alarm clock brought him out of his dreams. He reached for the reading light switch, then checked his watch--6:30 a.m., and another day of work. As he got up, the darkness outside reminding him of winter coincided with the soft voice of the all night disk jockey forecasting the fall of four inches of snow. Warm beads of water beating on his face removed all remnants of sleep and, like a stimulant, the morning shower brought thoughts of yesterday and plans for a new day. These carried over as he looked himself in the mirror while shaving and brushing his teeth.

The mineral aggregate industry is the world&apos;s largest mining and processing endeavor, yet it is graced with little of the romance or public awareness that accompanies mention of gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, or aluminum mining efforts. Much of this reaction is undoubtedly due to the fact that the uses to which crushed stone and sand and gravel are normally put are not fully recognized or appreciated by the general public. Few individuals ever have occasion to purchase mineral aggregates for anything other than use for decorative shrubbery beds or walkways. They may, however, buy ready-mix concrete for a new patio, bituminous concrete for a new driveway, concrete blocks, or other building materials for a new room and never realize that the primary ingredients of their purchases are either direct or indirect products of the mineral aggregate industry. The average person driving past an operating crushed stone quarry or an active sand and gravel pit rarely realizes the economic impact the industry, represented by that operation, exercises on the general economy. He is not aware, nor does he really care, that elements of the modern comfortable environment to which he has grown accustomed rely to a great extent on the products of the crushed stone and sand and gravel industries Iron and steel, glass, cement, agriculture, and highway and building construction are but a few of the major industries to whom the products of the mineral aggregate industry are basic. Without these industries or without the stone, sand, and gravel basic to them, most of the major elements of our modern day civilization would be non-existent.

The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

The balling section of the pelletizing plant at Hoogovens IJmuiden consists of 7 balling drums. Each with an average capacity of 100 tons of green pellets per hour. The balling drums are equipped with rotating scrapers and water-spraying systems. The scrapers are installed in order to restrict the growth of the race to a certain thickness. The spraying system is used to adjust the desired value of the moisture-content of the rewetted ground ore, the pellets and the race. The desired value is the value by which the balling- process is stable, good pellets are formed and surge occurs within certain limits. In October 1980 the construction of one of the balling drums has been modified. The rotating scraper was removed and the inner wall of the drum was supplied with a rubber-lining. In 1982 a second balling drum has been rubber- lined. At the same time the Tyler vibrating screen of this balling circuit has been replaced by a roller(bed)screen. By the end of 1983 all 7 balling circuits will be equipped with rubber-lined drums in combination with roller(bed)screens. The combination of these two modifications will improve the quality and the screen analysis of the green pellets, moreover resulting in savings on energy- and maintenance costs. This paper describes the influence of a rubber- lining on the balling process and the green pellet quality by carrying out in-plant testruns in November/December 1980. The testrun results have been compared with the results of a not modified balling drum.

For compliance with the Hazard Communication Standard and other federal and state regulations, numerous minerals, chemicals and products need to be evaluated for crystalline silica content at a threshold of 0.1 %. The polymorphs of crystalline silica that can occur in chemical and mineral products are quartz, cristobalite and tridymite. Other natural, industrial and synthetic amorphous silicas and hydrates must be distinguished from these polymorphs to prevent over-regulation in the workplace and environment. A number of industrial silica products are composed of glasses, expanded perlite, diatomite, slags, and precipitated and fumed silica products. Amorphous silica hydrates used for industrial products, include opal (hydrated silica of biogenic or inorganic origin), perlite, pumice and tuffs. In addition, crystalline and amorphous silicate minerals and chemicals, abundant in nature and industrial products, must be distinguished from the polymorphs of crystalline silica.

Technologic advances in materials utilization during the past two decades have brought is a long way toward the point where we can make the products we need from the materials we have readily available. Notable examples are the synthesis of diamond, zeolites, quartz crystal, mullite, and mica, and the development of phosphate bonded tale. Two of these--zeolites and mullite--involve the use of clays. There is little reason to doubt that equally important advances will be realized in the next decade, and that clays will play an important role in the developing materials technology. Indeed, the stage is already set for many of them. This discussion is concerned primarily with the high quality, relatively high priced clays, kaolin, bentonite, fuller&apos;s earth and ball clay. The first three have enjoyed demand growth rates over the past two decades which on the average exceeded the growth rate for the economy as a whole. There are indications that demand for ball clay will be growing at a faster rate in the future.
