N. A. Degerstrom, Inc. has constructed and operated a processing plant approximately five miles north of Soda Springs, Idaho for processing a byproduct phosphate treater dust from Monsanto's elemental phosphorus plant, also located in Soda Springs. The plant is designed to produce agricultural-grade phosphoric acid, gallium, and silver. The design capacity of the plant is 54.4t (60 st) of treater dust per day, which can produce 16,326t (18,000 st) of phosphoric acid, 6,600 kg of gallium, and 6,033 kg (194,000 oz.) of silver per year.

An accepted statement of fact is that transportation next to agriculture is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States contributed immensely to the growth and prosperity of our nation. My objective is to make each and everyone here aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, covered wagons or whatever. If this is your only exposure to the transportation industry then you probably spent most of your life in a cave.

The world's reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India, and the U.S. are expected to remain the leading producing countries. The U.S. will continue to be the largest consumer of the production. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4,410Mt. This is about 50% of the projected capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydro-carbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the U.S. requirements.

During the ten year span from 1978 to 1987, the number of fires which occurred in under-ground coal mines doubled from the previous ten years. Anyone involved with underground coal mines is well aware of the associated tragedy that can result from these fires, both to personnel and to property. Every day mine management and mining personnel face this threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. As a direct result of the ever-increasing interest in the Mine Emergency Preparedness Program and the Mine Fire Training Programs currently being conducted, the Emergency Preparedness Center was created. As a branch of the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University, the Center provides preparedness training at several different levels on a varying range of topics. Classes are conducted at a new especially-designed training laboratory at the National Mine Safety & Health Academy in West Virginia. By maintaining the proper equipment and levels of training allowing for immediate response, the personnel who are part of the Center believe that the impact of a mine fire or other such emergency situation can be minimized. This paper will present recommendations for maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness program and will provide information regarding the Mine Fire Training Program as conducted by the Emergency Preparedness Center and describe the advantages of the newly constructed training facility.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high loss-of-ignition (LOI)fly ash. Using froth flotation to achieve selective separations requires long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash — low LOI ash and a high-carbon product suit-able for reburning or further upgrading.

The Brunswick Mine, a Division of Noranda Inc., produces zinc, lead, copper, and bulk lead-zinc concentrates through underground mining of a large massive sulphide deposit. The mining method employed is longhole open stoping with delayed backfilling. In 1996 Brunswick began a review of its mining methods and backfilling operations. In 1997 the decision was made to convert the backfill system from cemented and uncemented rockfill to paste backfill prepared from mill tailings. This paper will describe the features of the backfill preparation and distribution systems, review the handling of technical issues, and discuss experiences since plant commissioning.

The Mineral Park Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine located in northwestern Arizona, approximately 74 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The property has been owned by the Duval Corporation, Cyprus Mining Company and Equatorial Mining of Australia. Mercator purchased Mineral Park from Equatorial in 2003. Mineral Park commissioned a 25,000 tpd copper and molybdenum concentrator in November and December of 2008. The process includes two stage milling (SAG and Two Ball Mills) fed by primary crushed ore. Metals are recovered in a copper-molybdenum flotation circuit consisting of mechanically agitated roughers and cleaners. The copper- molybdenum flotation concentrate is thickened and further processed in the molybdenum flotation circuit which separates the copper and molybdenum minerals into salable concentrates. The molybdenum circuit also uses mechanically agitated cells. This paper describes the plant and some of the highlights of the commissioning process.

Early studies in the carbonate leaching of uranium ores led to the investigation of pressure leaching as a method to enhance the dissolution of the metal values in this system. The initial investigations conducted at the University of British Columbia supplemented by the work done by the group at the A.E.C. Grand Junction pilot plant, all established the higher efficiency and better economics of the alkaline pressure leaching system. This work was conducted either in laboratory autoclaves using oxygen overpressures, or in pilot plant sized horizontal autoclaves with air as an oxidant. Both of these testing vehicles utilized agitation provided by relatively high speed impellers (300 to 700 rpm), which apparently enhanced the oxidation of the uranium to the hexavalent state. The installation of vertical autoclaves on a production scale, which through design considerations require relatively slow agitator speeds (68 rpm), led to the studies of the utilization efficiency of the air addition and the use of catalytic type oxidants to effect a greater usage of the oxygen added through the aeration system. In addition to investigating the effects of the chemical additives, studies were also conducted on the effect of different impeller configurations on the extraction of uranium, which in itself is a measure of oxidation efficiency. The material presented in this paper was compiled in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, and the majority of the data was obtained in the Homestake- Sapin Partners mill, located at Grants, New Mexico.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study copper ion adsorption, and its effect on subsequent sulfide collector adsorption, on pyrite and pyroxene minerals under flotation related conditions. Copper was found to adsorb on both of these minerals and cause enhanced sulfide collector adsorption. The distribution and depth profile of copper and collector on these mineral surfaces were obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. The results of this study have provided a valuable insight to understanding pyrite and gangue flotation observed frequently in operating plants.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. Large quantities of phosphate rock are mined and processed in Central Florida (Figure 1). The phosphate rock from the mines is further processed in "chemical plants" to produce phosphoric acid (Figure 2). A by-product of the processing&apos; of the phosphate rock to produce fertilizer chemicals is an impure form of gypsum referred to as phosphogypsum. For each ton of phosphate rock processed, approximately 1.5 tons of phosphogypsum is produced (Figure 3). The typical method to dispose of this by-product gypsum is to stack it in large piles, locally referred to as gypsum stacks or gypsum fields (Figure 4). These gypsum stacks have been the focus of many studies in recent years in an attempt to identify the potential for ground water and/or air pollution associated with the stacks. This paper attempts to discuss some of the ground water impacts and current attempts to minimize these impacts.

INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation&apos;s mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

The 2014 George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center, City University of New York in New York City was presented under the theme, ?21st Century Challenges for the Tunneling Industry. Bruce Grewcock, chief executive officer and president of Peter Kiewit Sons? Inc., opened the conference with a keynote address in which he set the tone for the rest of the day by touching on the many challenges the industry is facing, which are plentiful and complex. Covering the breadth of the industry, he spoke about everything from the technical challenges that come from working beneath the streets of some of the most densely populated regions in the world to the challenges that come from working with the people who live in those areas. ?My observation is that we, as an industry, are being asked to put structures in places where they are needed, but are complex environments to work in,? said Grewcock. ?We work in an industry that relies on some of the most technically challenging engineering in the world, and when we are done with a project, we cover it up and no one ever sees it.? Despite these issues, Grewcock said that, in his opinion, the biggest challenge the industry is facing is that of people; more precisely, where to find the next batch of people. Looking out at the conference-record crowd of more than 400 registered attendees, Grewcock quipped that he saw plenty of gray beards and asked aloud, ?Where will we find, educate and train the people to tackle the issues that this industry will face in the future??

The design and construction of a new 140-ton-per-day R. O. M. phosphate rock scrubbing and washing plant was undertaken by Western Knapp Engineering Company, a Division of Arthur G. McKee and Company, for the J. R. Simplot Company, Minerals and Chemical Division, Pocatello, Idaho. The new plant replaces the owner&apos;s existing facilities at Conda, Idaho, seven miles northeast of Soda Springs in the southeast corner of Idaho. Replacement of the existing facilities became necessary because of loss in production and recovery. These losses were due in part to varying grades of raw ore from the mine and to the type of process equipment used in the old plant to upgrade the ore. Increase In production and grade was further necessary by demands created by expansion of facilities in Pocatello, Idaho, where all process ore from this plant is shipped. The new process scheme includes an ore-feeding system, scrubbing, screening, classification, wet cycloning, attritioning, filtering, drying, storage and shipping facilities. Space was also left for future increases of scrubbing and classification capacity and for heavy media separation. It is the purpose of this paper to take up some of the considerations necessary in the design of small mills in order to achieve the desired objectives of a successful plant, such as production, minimum operating cost and maintenance cost.

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million ton&apos;> of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization -"scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who burn coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

This report describes a computer program for the solution of material balances in complex mineral processing flowsheets. The program, which is entitled MBS Metallurgical Balance System), evolved as the culmination of a series of material balance programs whose development began in 1967 at the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University. The need for such a program became evident when the Institute became heavily involved in a large number of short-term pilot plant projects. Calculating material flows from analytical data by means of the standard two-product formulas grew increasingly difficult and time-consuming as the complexity of the flowsheets increased and as choices between conflicting analytical values had to be made. It was recognized that what was needed was a program that would assimilate all of the available data and calculate mass flow rates so that steady-state inputs and outputs would balance at each point in the flowsheet. Such a program should be capable of handling underdetermined, overdetermined and mixed systems, and when the given data are inconsistent, the program should adjust the data in such a manner that the adjustments are minimized. Missing analyses should also be calculated whenever possible. In addition to solving material balances, the program should be convenient to use and print out the results in a useful form. Thus, the inputting of data should be simple enough to be handled by relatively untrained personnel with diagnostic messages being printed out to identify errors and anamolous data when they occur. Most importantly, the program should produce well-formatted output which can be directly included into a report without the necessity of retyping. The proper spacing of table titles, column headings and the ability to control the columns being printed are important features in this respect.

Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). "For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. Considerable potential for metallic mineral resources in the lower Proterozoic rock of the Lake Superior region exists (Mudrey and Kalliokoski, in press). Most of the identified resources occur within a 2.0- to 1.9-b.y.-old lithotectonic assemblage characterized by extensive sedimentary strata in the north and thick volcanic se- quences in the south, all deposited on a two-terrane, composite basement of Archean age (DeMattis, 1989). Since the late 1960s, measured resources of nearly 90 Mt (100 million st) of typical volcanogenic massive sulfide at eight localities in Wisconsin have been discovered. The largest of these, near Crandon, contains about 61 Mt (67 million st) of ore averaging 5.6% zinc, 1.1 % copper, and 0.5% lead. Although none of these properties are in production, estimates by Mudrey (1978) suggest that Wisconsin could become a major contributor of newly mined zinc and copper in the United States. These discoveries and uranium and gold discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian are what have led to in- creased metallic mineral exploration throughout the northern half of Wisconsin (Fig. 1). In this chapter, we discuss the geology and legal framework in which the Proterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits were found. Exploration activities for other metals have generally been negative, and have been background noise for the legislative activities related to the massive sulfide discoveries. Uranium exploration has been consistently negative, although several different environments have been assessed. Other metal discoveries. such as titanium/vanadium, have been subeconomic.
