Very few mineral properties spend their entire lifespans from discovery to depletion in the hands of one owner. More likely, properties will have several owners, and partial interests may change quite often. Similarly, mineral companies are bought and sold with frequency, in recent years at what appears to be an accelerating rate. The reasons for selling a property can be manifold -need for additional capital in other parts of the business, need for development capital, realization of a large gain at a perceived high point in the market, pessimistic commodity outlook, retirement of principals, or resolution of estate problems. Regardless of the reasons for a sale, there are specific steps that logically follow. Spruce up the business, package the information, market the property, negotiate the terms, close the sale, and make sure it stays sold. Adherence to certain very basic ground rules in property sales can maximize the profits and minimize the effort.

A 9-meter-long drift was constructed in the unsaturated-fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain to evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing a finite volume of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations, and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

"After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP, or black lung) in the United States has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of rapidly progressive disease such as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 U.S. coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85 percent) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17 percent) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84 percent) of the individuals in that study worked in Kentucky, West Virginia or Virginia, and 169 (88 percent) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern Kentucky. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, there has been some concern that these reports may overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression — such that effective interventions can be devised.The notable uptick in CWP and PMF rates among miners in central Appalachia has led to this region being called a hot spot for disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2017). While the geographic clustering has been well documented (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Wade et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2013), the root cause is still unknown. Leading hypotheses have focused on the relative amount of rock being cut along with coal in many central Appalachian mines, as there has been a tendency to mine increasingly thinner coal seams over the past couple of decades (Laney et al., 2010; Schatzel, 2009). This shift has likely been accompanied by changes in specific dust exposure factors, such as increased abundance of particularly harmful dust constituents (e.g., silica or silicates) or increased frequency of harmful exposures (e.g., due to work in more risky environments) (Pollock et al., 2010; Blackley et al., 2016; Cohen et al., 2016; Douglas et al., 1986)."

Conventional methods of drillhole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drillholes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drillholes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. We are very proud to add these five legendary gentlemen, who have demonstrated their sound technical and management skills to advance society on a worldwide basis, to our current list of 218 inductees being honored by the National Mining Hall of Fame.? 2013 Prazen Award winner ? The increase in depth of mines due to the depletion of surface deposits leads to unsafe tunnel construction and overall ore extraction. This is due to tunnel instability associated with the surrounding rock mass’s ability to exhibit creep that occurs over time. However, the explicit description of this mechanism using conventional constitutive models has proven to be difficult and inadequate. Hence, this paper presents an integrated viscoelastic viscoplastic visco-damage model with the Duvaut-Lions function. The presented model is calibrated by experimental data to determine the viscoelastic viscoplastic and visco-damage parameters. It is further implemented in a finite volume numerical code and verified on an experimental scale by numerical modeling of a cylindrical specimen. It describes the 3-phase creep mechanism perfectly as compared to the inbuilt conventional integer-order derivative model. Results from the conducted verification show that it can successfully be employed to describe the long-term behavior associated with the creep mechanism.

This paper focuses on remediation of a 3.6 km long water conveyance tunnel that suffered two large falls of ground (FoGs), one of which subsequently progressed to the ground surface, resulting in full collapse of the tunnel. The tunnel is part of a network of water conveyance tunnels and open channels that direct water into two turbines located in an underground powerhouse, originally constructed in the 1970s. At the time of construction, the tunnel was partially supported with shotcrete or rock bolts, with no further ground support added since construction. Two sonar surveys in 019 and 01 identied two adacent large FoGs in the tunnel, approimately 1.2 km from the tunnel outlet. Historical geological and geotechnical information indicated that the FoGs occurred within a 60 m wide fault zone. Remediation plans were developed, which included stabilization of the outlet channel, the portal, the tunnel leading up to the FoG areas (1.2 km length) and the FoG areas. Several remediation options were considered to restore the tunnel, including construction of a diversion tunnel to bypass the FoGs or remediation of the FoG areas with steel ribs and backlling the void above the FoGs to surface.

"A new raw water intake from the South Holston River to the Kingsport water treatment plant is under construction. The exploration for the 335 meter long horseshoe shaped tunnel design took advantage of the site topography along the alignment to better define the complex geology consisting of Knox Limestone and Sevier Shale formations separated by a fault zone. To assess the geological conditions and to determine the extent of the fault zone, a 183 meter long horizontal boring and geophysical investigation was performed along a portion of the tunnel’s horizontal alignment. Explorations defined the fault zone width at approximately 5 meters and packer testing along the alignment provided a means of estimating groundwater inflows. As the tunnel excavation advances, comparisons of exploratory data versus encountered conditions will be made. This paper provides details on the geotechnical investigation, lessons learned, and the influence of the geology on the tunnel design. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Kingsport WTP is supplied with raw water via the South Holston River. The City of Kingsport (City) owns and operates the Kingsport Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The existing raw water intake system, consisting of pumps, power supply, raw water piping and appurtenant facilities has been determined to be vulnerable to failure. The original Raw Water Pump Station (RWPS) was constructed in 1928 as part of the original Kingsport WTP project. The 1928 RWPS operated until 1970 when it was replaced by the existing RWPS. This existing system still utilizes the 1928 piping and piping tunnel. Improvements to the RWPS hydraulics and capacity are required to meet the City’s future water treatment needs. The system extracts water from the South Fork of the Holsten River and coveys it via three pressure pipelines to the WTP. The conveyance piping exits the RWPS, ascends approximately 23 m up a near vertical rock outcropping then enters a 120 m long tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel the piping continues underground to the WTP. The drill and blast tunnel is horseshoe shaped and nominally 3.3 m high by 3.3 m wide. The easternmost 62.3 m of the tunnel is without any type of support. The remainder is lined with concrete. According to the City of Kingsport, the concrete lining was installed in the 1970’s as part of upgrades to the facility. An evaluation of the current facilities concluded that the conveyance piping was in poor condition and required replacement."

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. Mineral Resource Technologies(MRT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU)finalized an agreement that permits MRT to offer an advanced carbon removal technology process for coal fly ash from an ash residue generated by utilities. The agreement encompasses the dominant existing US patents using a wet process for fly ash enhancement. The wet process for coal beneficiation of a fly ash product involves four steps. First, a slurry mixture is formed of a fly ash material and a liquid. Second, gravity is used to separate and collect a first-material fraction of the fly ash, having a density less than the liquid. This is done by skimming off the flotation slurry material.

"On January 9, 2014, a large chemical spill occurred on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV. Within hours, the potable water supply for more than 300,000 people was contaminated, and the incident captured national headlines for weeks. Although the primary chemical, crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol, or MCHM, is deemed nonhazardous, the impacts of the spill are significant – with all stakeholders, including the public, members of industry, and relevant government agencies experiencing losses. This case highlights the need for a more proactive approach to environmental management, shifting from crisis control and remediation to crisis prevention and risk management. INTRODUCTION On the morning of January 9, 2014, approximately 10,000 gallons of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a 48,000-gallon storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal, and is deemed nonhazardous in terms of transportation and storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries, Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility where the spill occurred from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein & McWhirter, 2014). The spill site was located just over a mile upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a “Do Not Use” order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a). With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the “Do Not Use” order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until January 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below this level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at concentrations as low as 0.55 ppb by individuals experienced in odor identification (Rosen et al., 2014); and even individuals with no such training can detect pure MCHM at just 7 ppb (WVTAP, 2014). The fact that this chemical can be sensed at such low levels – indeed far below those considered safe – undoubtedly added to growing public concern. In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until February 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAWb, 2014), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAWc, 2014)."

The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

Estimates of the cost of producing any commodity generally fall into several classes depending upon the motives and needs of the estimator. There are estimates intended to show how low costs might be with favorable conditions if everything goes well. At the other extreme, there are estimates which show how high costs might be if troubles develop. The estimates in this paper for the cost of producing direct reduced iron (DRI) are accompanied by discussion to point out how the final figures may be adjusted in either a promotional or a conservative direction. Because we do not have a specific process and a particular set of conditions in mind when discussing this subject today, this paper deals with the general situation, with considerable attention to how the estimates can be made more specific once one knows the particulars of a given situation.

During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment process was compared to a new technology system with the following observations: - Using the existing alignment process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/-300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. - The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: - Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. - This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from the trials stipulates that if the new technology were in use for a full 12 months, when applied to FY17 full year data, a 10 percentage point reduction in dilution would represent a net 45.4% decrease, and would result in AUD8.2M (USD5.9) additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M (USD3.2M) less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 (USD63) to AUD106 (USD77.1). INTRODUCTION Dilution – planned and unplanned – remains a significant cost impairment in the mining process. A series of trials were held over a six-month period in FY18 which established the cost-benefit of new technology as it applies to the alignment accuracy of production drilling rigs in underground mining, thus confirming its ability to limit drilling as one of the causes of dilution. The trials identified three underlying factors affecting drilling accuracy, measurable by blast-hole deviation surveys of planned vs actual toe data. These were; rig alignment error, collar location change/error, and in-hole deviation. The trials involved a comparison of existing rig setup processes and technology, with the new technology (Minnovare’s Production Optimiser system). The trials were undertaken in the same environment; an operating underground gold mine - Cracow Gold Mine. The comparison first revealed the extent to which rig alignment impacts blast-hole deviation. Secondly, the new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%.

It highlights the impact of continuous airflow monitoring on improving model calibration. The paper discusses an experimental study at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to understand the use of continuous airflow data for model improvement. It also addresses practical problems in calibration and tuning using this data, including analysis of air velocity sensor fluctuations and application of sensor location correction factors for accurate average air velocity.

The Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority (DELCORA) will be adding tunnel infrastructure to its wastewater conveyance system. This program involves the construction of a conveyance/storage tunnel and related facilities. The proposed 12- foot to 14-foot (±) finished diameter, TBM mined deep rock tunnel spans over 8.5 miles and lies approximately 80 ft-120 ft below the surface. The system is connected to the surface by at least five vertical online shafts and one offline shaft with associated 800ft long adit. This paper provides project details including data on the geologic conditions in which the tunnel will be constructed.

Outputs from industrial activities planned in the Riley Ridge natural gas project are modeled to determine the potential locations of air pollution impacts on the Bridger and Fitzpatrick Wildernesses in Wyoming. The nature of modeling, especially with regard to its realism, is discussed. Alpine lakes which, along with their watersheds, have minimal buffering capacity are being studied because of their sensitivity to acidic deposition from proposed new air pollution sources. A hypothesis which relates a source's emissions to deposition and lake chemistry in a worst-case sense is presented. Research designed to test the hypothesis and reduce uncertainties is outlined and progress reviewed. Focus is placed on the meteorological transport and atmospheric deposition parameterization contained in the hypothesis.

The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) held its fifth annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada earlier this year. “The Minerals Industry: Responding to the Global Challenge” was the first MEMS conference to be held outside of the United States. About 125 mining- and minerals-related professionals attended. The MEMS program included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. The session topics included: “Minerals in the Macro economy: Development in Demand,” “Trends in Global Metals Supply: The Producers’ Challenge,” “Global Environmental Issues: Policy Perspectives,” “Global Environmental Issues: Quantitative Analysis” and “Minerals in the CIS: Phoenix or Albatross?” A student session was also offered. It provided a competition for monetary awards for outstanding papers.

Previous studies have shown that separation of clay minerals from non-clay minerals is the key to economic recovery of the phosphate from the waste phosphatic clays (slime) which represent about 20- 300/0 of the phosphate mined. Small hydrocyclones of different sizes (4" and 6") were tested for sizing the slime at +10 microns in order to remove most of the clay minerals. The effect of design variables and operating parameters were evaluated. Multi-stage cycloning and the effect of dispersant were also investigated. Chemical and mineralogical analyses of different size fractions of both the underflow and overflow samples indicated satisfactorily separation efficiency.
