Coal ribs present a major safety hazard in underground mines, and there is currently no unified approach for their design in the United States. To tackle this issue, this study investigated the stability of underground coal pillar ribs under development load. Utilizing over a thousand 3DEC models, a framework for calculating coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) was developed. A detailed step-by-step method was outlined for computing the CPRR based on a 3DEC analysis, which was then validated with various 3DEC models, demonstrating a strong correlation between the two models. The results demonstrated that the rib factor of safety (RibFOS) under development load is directly proportional to CPRR, coal mine roof rating (CMRR), and floor strength, and inversely proportional to the overburden depth and rib height. Moreover, a regression equation was formulated to predict the RibFOS based on the aforementioned parameters. Furthermore, empirical relationships were developed between the RibFOS and the applied primary rib support density (PRSD) in U.S. coal mines. To ease the calculations, a stand-alone application, Design of Rib Support (DORS), was developed. This application can be used to assess rib stability and easily calculate CPRR, RibFOS, and PRSD.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of different reagents, such as limestone, lime, magnesium oxide, and sodium hydroxide, in experiments carried out in the single purification step and in two consecutive purification steps by raising the pH of a rare earth sulfuric liquor with the aim to remove or reduce the impurity concentrations in the rare earth sulfuric liquor. The choice for the best purification condition was made based on the minimum loss of rare earth elements (REEs), reagent consumption, and residue generation. The exploratory experiments show that it takes place in the two consecutive purification steps, the first one consists in dosing the limestone pulp until it reaches a pH of 3.5 followed by an addition of a lime pulp reaching a pH of 5.0. Under this condition, the results were a total removal of Fe3+, PO4 3− , and Th4+ ions and a reduction of 99%, 87%, and 37% w/w in the Al3+, UO2 2+, and SO4 2− concentrations, respectively, in the purified rare earth liquor. Furthermore, the lowest REE losses (8.3% w/w) and reagent consumption (4.3 kg/m3 ) and also a low residue generation (7.5 kg/m3 ) were observed in this condition. Despite reaching similar results regarding impurity removal, the experiments done with the addition of limestone, lime, magnesium oxide pulps, and sodium hydroxide solution in the single purification step, where the pH was raised to 5.0, presented higher REE losses (64.9%, 42.5%, 44.8%, and 60.9% w/w, respectively) and a higher residue generation (43.2, 25.1, 11.1, and 13.6 kg/m3 , respectively). This occurred due to the co-precipitation of salts containing rare earth elements in their composition. The experiments conducted with limestone, lime, and MgO resulted in a higher consumption of reagents, while the same result was observed when NaOH was used (4.3 kg/m3 ). In the experiments carried out with the addition of magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide, the respective purified rare earth liquors presented a high concentration of magnesium, sulfate, or sodium, which could impact the quality of the marketable rare earth salts, whereas the salts obtained under the best condition observed in this study seem to be amenable for use as raw material in an attempt to obtain rare earth products with an acceptable chemical quality.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

Over the last 20 years, the manufacturing sector of our country has been called upon to comply with ever core stringent environmental standards. The primary metals sector was particularly hard hit early on, to develop the technology, acquire the equipment, and implement the programs to eliminate or reduce the by-products of metal making. To this end, through a combination of technological innovation and extensive capital expenditures, the metals industry has met, and in many cases, exceeded the minimum standards. It is to this escalating cost - liability exposure issue - that Dereco has addressed itself. As we move into the decade of the 90's, the challenge facing the metals industry concerning the environment will be even more difficult than the previous decade. To focus in on one major aspect of legislated environmental regulations, the issue we will address today is; now that the by-products of metal production have been identified, accounted for and collected, how are they to be disposed of? "This project is exploring the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in soils and tailings containing high metal concentrations with minimal post-planting human intervention. The research is being conducted in an underground greenhouse located 100 feet below the surface in the old Orphan Boy Mine Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) located on Montana Tech’s campus in Butte, Montana. INTRODUCTION In an effort to improve Butte Area One natural resources, the research project was proposed to help restore tree growth in the Butte Priority Soils Operable Unit Boundary (BPSOU). Research by Blicker, et al. (2003) found that, the BPSOU, which is part of the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area National Priorities List (Superfund) Site within and near Butte, Montana has multiple historic mining sites situated entirely within the urban setting of Butte. Mine wastes and mill tailings, accumulated from over 100 years of gold, silver, and especially copper mining are dispersed throughout Butte, posing health risks to human and environmental receptors. Stabilization of tailings sites is needed to control fugitive dust, prevent run-off of toxic material resulting in subsequent sediment deposition in streams, reducing the volume of water seepage through acidic and heavy metal contaminated material, and improving land productivity and aesthetic VALUES ((Watkin and Watkin, 1982). If successful, the project will help restore water quality and maintain stream flow in Silver Bow Creek where it flows through Butte Area One. Trees native to Butte are being grown in an underground greenhouse located in the UMEC and will be planted in five areas located within the BPSOU designated for tree planting by the Butte Silver Bow government. Growing trees is expected to help restore vegetative ground cover within the watershed contributing to stream flow in Silver Bow Creek. They will prevent soil and tailings from eroding and being deposited in Silver Bow Creek where they could degrade water quality and choke stream flow."

The Tayoltita Unit of Minas de San Luis, S. A. is situated in an isolated corner of the state of Durango, Mexico. The ore deposits in the region were first worked by Indians, but by 1757 the Spaniards had discovered them, and the first systematic exploitation of the mines commenced. By the early 1900's most of the mines had been acquired by American interests, and the San Luis Mining Company was organized. The modern period of exploitation, uninterrupted for the last 74 years, began. In 1962 the company was fully "Mexicenized" in compliance with the modification of the mining law, and the name was changed to Minas de San Luis, S. A. Tayoltita continues as one of Mexico's most important silver and gold mines. The ore is extracted in en extensive underground operation, mining epithermal fissure veins by selective methods. The ore is milled and treated in an efficient counter-current cyanide plant, where 95 % of the silver and 96 % of the gold is recovered. Current annual bullion output is 55,000 kg (1.7 million troy oz) of silver and 1000 kg (31,000 troy oz) of gold from milling 165,000 try (181,900 stpy). Rough, 33-kg (1000-troy oz) bullion bars are smelted at the mine, shipped by air to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and are thence sold to the Met- Mex Peñoles smelter in Torreon, Coahuila. Ore reserves, blocked by very conservative methods, are currently at 540,000 tons (595,000 st). Ore reserve grade is 425 g of silver and 6 g of gold per ton (12.4 troy oz Ag and 0.18 troy oz Au per st).

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a filtered air delivery system to reduce respirable dust exposure of roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. When performing roof bolting operations, roof bolter operators may experience exposure to high levels of respirable dust during a working shift, especially when working downwind of the continuous mining machine. While drilling and installing roof bolts, this filtered air system supplies a clean curtain of air over the roof bolter operator by means of a plenum mounted beneath the canopy. This experimentally designed air curtain, adapted for roof bolting machines used in this study, is based upon previous design prototypes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and trial-and-error testing. Both the prototype and final designs were tested in the full-scale mining galleries at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) in Pittsburgh, PA before being taken underground for field testing. Test results of the system in both laboratory and field studies show reductions in operator exposure to respirable dust when the operator is positioned directly under the protected zone of the canopy.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

Multivariate cluster analysis, MANOVA, canonical analysis, and discriminant analysis of hydrochemistry data were used to investigate the directions of ground water movement in basalts in the vicinity of the Hanford Reservation, Washington. The statistical analyses indicate that the hydrochemistry of the ground waters in these basalt formations is distinctly different on each side of the Columbia River. This suggests that the river is a ground water divide or that the river is roughly coincident with a hydrogeologic barrier boundary. The statistical procedures used in this study constitute a quantitative means for differentiating ground waters according to hydrochemistry.

Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

Current mining regulations require revegetation in reclaiming surface nines. Excessive soil compaction can be an impediment to successful revegetation in poor soil conditions common to Eastern coal nine sites. A field study was performed to determine the bulk densities of soils that had been spread by either bulldozers or scrapers at a strip nine site. Moisture-density relationships for the soils were determined from the field samples. These were compared with stockpile samples compacted by the Standard Proctor compaction test. The results of the study indicate that the degree of compaction could be lessened through proper soil handling procedures.

The results of column leaching tests on 3 different mixed oxide/sulfide ores from a Chilean deposit are presented. The 3 samples contained different ratios of oxide copper minerals to chalcocite and chalcopyrite. The results of the column leach tests are interpreted in light of the shrinking core model for coarse particle leaching. The copper recovery from the oxide minerals and the sulfide minerals each conforms to the shrinking core model with the total recovery equal to the weighted average of the individual minerals. The use of column test results to predict field heap leaching results using the multi-mineral shrinking core model is discussed.

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. It is expected that a similar trend exists across ASM operations in Ghana."

There are many methods to estimate costs quickly. One of these is the Parametric Method, where costs are estimated from general algorithms (or curves). Derived from an original tool based on the O’Hara model, a software called MAFMINE was developed. MAFMINE is based on parametric models to estimate investment and operational costs in mining. The software itself is based on the use of a computer model known as client-server. However, the model needs new inputs from advances made by the mining industry, mainly in terms of electrification, automation, digital transformation and preconcentration to face Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concerns. Thus, this work was to prepare a new core module ready to incorporate the new technologies aiming to deliver operation and capital costs associated with environmental impact mitigation. The tool generates an order of magnitude estimate for CAPEX and OPEX to establish a very first Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) in a mining venture. For quick evaluations, at a preliminary level, the results are very promising.

The Candelaria copper-gold deposit is located in Region m of Chile, 805 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago. Candelaria was discovered in 1987, following a six month exploration program. In late 1986, induced polarization (IP) surveys outlined an anomalously high response within the area of interest. The first test hole bad three intersections totaling 49 meters, with an average grade of 1.97% copper. Drilling eventually outlined approximately 390 million tonnes, grading 1.09010 copper and 0.26 grams/tonne gold. Production began in early 1995 and is estimated at 120,000 tonnes copper and 80,000 ounces gold annually.

Mining always leaves a mark behind. Dealing with this legacy is not only a tremendous challenge in Germany, but internationally too. The Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, Germany, has established a Research Center for Post-Mining. Researchers combine expertise from a variety of technical and nontechnical fields in their quest to shape the post-mining era that completes the mine life cycle. In this respect, the Research Center focuses on four research areas: Perpetual tasks and mine water management, Geomonitoring, Material sciences and site transition. With more than 200 years of successful partnership with the mining industry in Germany and abroad, THGA offers a perfect setting for fresh and sound ideas in order support mining’s social license to operate. The aim of the paper is to describe the Post-Mining Research Center along with exemplary research projects that are of interest to the mining industry globally and to foster technical communication and research networking.

The detection of hazardous geological anomalies through remote sensing techniques is the subject of current research efforts sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this review, hazardous geological anomalies are discussed with respect to the "view" presented along with potential operational concepts for each technique. The design and development of a borehole radar is described with emphasis on the potential range and resolution capability of the system under realistic underground conditions. Results of field tests at two coal mines and at a hard rock future subway location are presented.
