Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies and miners as well as the dilution of mine air contaminants and must stay open for many years. In this study, standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled and instrumented by researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. "Underground coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the rib deformation and to stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand the performance of the mechanical bolts in coal ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted this work to understand the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of mechanical rib bolts. Different installation torques were applied to the tested bolts based on the strength of the coal seam. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response for mechanical bolts was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends mainly on the coal strength. Guidelines for modeling mechanical bolts have been developed using the tri-linear load-deformation response. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design.INTRODUCTIONThe design of rib bolting in U.S. coal mines is based on a trial-and-error process, which is insufficient to eliminate injuries and fatalities caused by rib falls. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 11 mines are bolting coal ribs, with 4 of those mines using the conventional mechanical bolts and the others using fully-grouted bolts. NIOSH researchers are developing an engineering design procedure for rib support. Pull-out test programs for mechanical and grouted rib bolts were conducted to understand the rib control mechanisms of rib bolts. Only the test results of mechanical bolts are presented in this paper.Mechanical bolt (or point-anchored bolt) is a tensioned bolt anchored down the borehole with a mechanical expansion shell or a resin-grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and occasionally a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type (Figure 1). The standard type shell is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the bar is generally 16 mm (? in) for the #5 bolt or 19 mm (6/8 in) for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled, since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the plug down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall."

With more than 20 major mines extracting copper, gold, coal, molybdenum and lime, Arizona is recognized as one of the better mining jurisdictions, not just in the United States, but in the world. However, that is not to say the road to production is always paved with gold, or in many cases, copper. Earning the license to mine in Arizona is a complex process with years of paperwork and permitting before the first tons of ore are ever processed. Now, get the federal government involved and the process becomes even more complex, and the path to production can become even longer.

"The times they are a changing, and, for the mining industry, the optimism is high. On Nov. 8, Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president of the United States, and the Republican Party won a majority of seats in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, ushering in what many hope will be a positive change for the mining and extractive minerals industries.Trump has stated that one of his top priorities as president will be to increase spending on the nation’s infrastructure, which could help spark a boom for mining. He has also pledged to bring back coal jobs and reverse many of the environmental regulations that were put in place by the Obama administration. However, before the mining industry gets too far ahead of itself and plans for another Super Cycle, there are stark reminders that any work in the natural resources sector is complicated and challenging. On Dec. 4, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it would not grant an easement that would allow the Dakota Access Pipeline to pass under a portion of the Missouri River in North Dakota. The proposed crossing of the oil pipeline is approximately a half a mile upstream from the Standing Rock Sioux’s Reservation, and for months, hundreds of protestors camped out at the site in an effort to halt the project, saying they feared how it would impact water supplies and sacred lands.Energy Transfer Partners, the company building the pipeline, said the pipeline is a $3.78-billion investment that will connect the Bakken and Three Forks production areas to major refining markets. The company signed voluntary easement agreements with landowners representing more than 85 percent of the properties along the four-state route but faced an organized protest from the Sioux Nation at Standing Rock. The protest gathered momentum and support through social and traditional media and became the focal point of global environmental and indigenous activism. The protestors claimed victory, at least temporarily, when the Corps of Engineers said it would look for alternative routes for the project. It’s a decision that could lead to a lengthy environmental review and one that has the potential to block the construction of the pipeline for months or even years."

Tunnel inspections have traditionally been carried out manually by inspectors writing up observations and taking photos of defects. The results from the inspection and the defects observed are dependent upon the rigor of the inspectors and may be subject to repeatability and consistency issues and is often time consuming with elevated health and safety risks. This paper will discuss work that is being carried out in developing and implementing an innovative hardware and software solution integrating machine learning to automate the process of capturing objective tunnel condition information, offering cost and programme savings as well as health and safety improvements

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). Mining companies often have many disparate systems and repositories of data in their organization for planning and scheduling outbound mining supply chains. To optimize ore quality, throughput, transport logistics scheduling and delivery to contract, planning teams need to model and manage the value chain accurately and achieve a consolidated, enterprise view of operational performance. Planning teams coordinate a complex series of activities to ensure production forecast accuracy. They also negotiate and execute complex contracts often with disconnected and limited visibility of production forecasts, quality, and variability with little ability to accurately market potential product specifications over longer time horizons. This market is becoming increasingly dynamic, with increasing variability and the time for planning teams to react is decreasing. This is driving the need towards using science to generate the necessary scenarios required to support the decisions made by planners on a frequent basis. Resource-to-Market is a highly flexible, user-configurable supply chain management system for the mining and metal processing industries. QUEBEC CARTIER MINING COMPANY was incorporated in 1957 to explore and develop low grade iron are deposits in Northeastern Quebec. Four separate deposits were located and identified as being of ore quality and size to support commercial development. Said deposits were located at Lac Jeannine, Mount-Wright, Fire Lake and Mount-Reed. In 1970, in preparation for the replacement of the depleting Lac Jeannine are reserves, construction of an SS-mile railway extension was initiated, towards the newly selected mine site at Mount-Wright. This orebody was selected because the physical and chemical characteristics of the ore were very much similar to those of Lac Jeannine, as well as its huge reserves, estimated at more than one billion tons. In addition to the railroad extension, a mine, concentrator and related facilities were constructed and the new town of Fermont was created. Total investment for the Mount-Wright project exceeded $700 million and initial production commenced in 1976. Quebec Cartier is presently (1992) the leading producer and seller of iron ore in North America at 15,5 million tons and employs some 2,300 people.

"Underground construction poses certain challenges for all parties involved because the actual ground conditions are often unpredictable. Highly complex projects like tunnel construction are affected by various uncertainties. To address this complexity, the construction contract has to be flexible enough to be adapted to the actual conditions (e.g. divergent ground conditions, work delays). However, the adaptation of a tunnel construction contract does not guarantee the absence of a margin of interpretation. The perfect construction contract is an illusion because ex ante statements of the actual ground conditions are not feasible. This paper will discuss contractual parameters that must be considered in order to enable an effective adaptation of the contract during excavation. It is therefore necessary to discuss the following topics: decision-making competence, variable remuneration, fair-risk allocation, value engineering and partnering between client and contractor. INTRODUCTION Thinking of tunnel construction processes, engineers’ first (or at least second) association is about ground conditions. When constructing under the surface, the project is directly related to the ground conditions; however, ground conditions are known fairly well in advance. The estimated conditions can be the same or can also differ from the existing ones. A clear view of the conditions is possible only by driving through the section. What Hoek calls “Geological unpredictability which is guaranteed to provide some surprises in even the simplest tunnelling job” is, in addition to contractual issues, one of two critical aspects of modern tunneling (Hoek 1982). Almost no research tries to figure out, what flexibility in this context means and how to approach it in the contracts. Papers dealing with the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) pose some principles to meet the requests for flexibility (cf. Austrian Society for Geomechanics 2011). However, it remains unclear how to create contracts in order to make them “flexible” enough to react to divergent ground conditions."

Dynamic permeability is a significant hydrologic condition associated with in-situ leaching at the Cyprus Casa Grande operations. Several factors contribute to changes in the permeability conditions. They are: 1) hydraulically induced fracture development, 2) geochemical changes during leaching in the rock matrix, and 3) changes in the relative degree of saturation of the deposit. Dynamic permeability conditions were evaluated using available pressure and flow rates from the 58 injection and recovery wells obtained over one year period. A finite element, 2-D hydrologic model called INVERT which is designed to estimate aquifer parameters under transient and steady state flow conditions was used for the investigation. The permeability conditions during 7 different steady state intervals throughout the one year time frame were determined. The results confirm that big changes in permeability occur as a function of time as well as a function of injection pressure condition.

"Re-occurring face ignitions in U.S. coal mines are concerning and require a closer look at air quality monitoring systems and practices employed in these mines. The explosion disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia in 2010 caused 29 fatal injuries and was largely caused by inadequate water sprays and inadequate ventilation monitoring. In this comparison, the author compares ventilation system monitoring in Australian, German and U.S. underground coal mines and makes recommendations for improvements and best practices. Mines in Germany and Australia are adhering to more stringent requirements for monitoring air quality and quantity and for monitoring water spray systems on cutters to prevent frictional ignitions. Air quality should to be monitored for sufficient oxygen, toxic gases, explosibility and for fire gases indicating a potential fire. Ventilation monitors must also confirm that sufficient quantities of air are available. Fully automated, continuously recording atmospheric monitoring and alarm systems are established practices in Germany and Australia and should be mandated for U.S. mines as well, in addition to the current, regular spot inspections of the ventilation system by certified mine examiners. BACKGROUND: METHANE EXPLOSIONS, FACE IGNITIONS AND NEED FOR AIR QUALITY MONITORING Accumulations of methane in face areas of underground coal mines frequently lead to ignitions that can cause burns, traumatic injuries and, in the case of the 2010 Upper Big Branch disaster, cause major explosions with multiple fatalities. Table 1 shows the number of reported face ignitions in U.S. coal mines between 2010 and 2014, based on statistical data published by MSHA (MSHA 2010 – 2014). Although there appears to be a downward trend in such ignition incidents over time, ignitions continue to occur with some regularity; and each ignition may cause a potentially catastrophic mine explosion.Per regulation, all U.S. coal mining machinery, continuous miners and longwall equipment, is outfitted with continuously monitoring methane sensors wired to cut power to the equipment as the methane level exceeds 1%. Face ignitions keep occurring because these sensors are usually not positioned in sufficiently close proximity to the coal cutting drums or to the freshly exposed coal face where the methane is most likely released. Therefore, methane may accumulate in explosive concentrations near the coal face and the cutting drums long before the gas concentration reaches the 1% level near the monitor and creates an alarm."

Many people involved with mining have argued that the industry throughout the world has always supported the communities where they operated. They say that the mining industry was employing sustainable development practices before the phrase became fashionable. The mines employed residents and supported the local economy through tax payments and the purchase of goods and services from local businesses. In many cases, mining companies have built medical facilities and contributed money, equipment and services to local schools. In modern times, mining companies have donated reclaimed land to the local communities for use as parks and recreational facilities.

Large mining companies use a number of sophisticated analytical techniques for introducing the element of risk into the valuation of mineral reserve sites. These methods include, but are not limited to, sensitivity analysis, computer simulation, conditional probability, and portfolio theory. Such techniques enable the managements of these large companies to have an awareness of the many possible ramifications of their investment decisions. On the other hand, small mining companies and individuals in the mining business, due to limited financial and technical resources, still rely primarily on single point estimates of the value of mineral reserves. These small miners introduce the aspect of risk only through the application of an appropriate "speculative" discount rate. This paper illustrates the application of a technique for the introduction of risk into investment analysis. The method appears to be most suitable for use by small mining companies and individuals contemplating a large investment in a new mineral reserve site.

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Your personal assessment of the minerals business. Gosh! When I think about what has happened to the minerals industry over the past 27 years that I have been a member of SME! There have been fundamental structural changes in the industry. And I think that SME has been quite successful in coping with these changes as well. There has been a reorientation in how the minerals industry does business. It used to be called rationalization. Today we call it reengineering. In addition, the minerals industry has become more complex and more global. Shareholders have become more vocal and demanding in the management of the business, asking for protection of their shareholders' value. In the 1980s, a fundamental change was precipitated by a merger and acquisition fever in all industries, including the minerals industry. Raiders such as T. Boone Pickens put enormous demands on companies that, in turn, had to spend substantial management time to fend off the raiders. This resulted in a major restructuring of the mining houses. Today, for example, Anaconda, Kennecott and Amax are only historical names.

Limited research has been conducted related to the development of mathematical optimization models for production scheduling at large surface coal mines using the area, i.e., strip, mining method. Increased economic and technical challenges have led to a new interest in production schedule optimization models for these type of mining operations like those currently applied to model underground and open pit mines. While area mines share similar characteristics to both open pit and underground metal operations, neither an open pit nor underground production scheduling model adequately depicts an area mine mathematically. We present an integer programming model with blending constraints and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation for area mines as well as future research in area mine production scheduling.

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor.
