According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. The processes of magnetic separation and cyclone classification are common in the mineral processing industry, and frequently the two are found in consecutive stages in the beneficiation of a magnetic mineral ore. The application of a magnetic field across the cyclone, to combine the two stages in treating a magnetic mineral pulp, has been investigated with a view to possible practical applications in the mineral industry The results of this research reveal that magnetic particles can be manipulated within the cyclone body by the application of a magnetic field, and that magnetic grades may be significantly upgraded with recoveries in excess of 90%.

Coal production and coal use for electric power generation are diminishing worldwide. Germany will phase out lignite mining as well as lignite and hard coal-powered electricity generation by 2038. In the United States, coal production has dropped by more than 50% since 2006, including in key coal production states like West Virginia and Wyoming (EIA 2021). Closing mines and power plants across entire mining regions has significant socio-economic impacts. Existing industries must be focused on the post-mining economy by attracting new industries, and implementing job retraining programs for displaced workers, as former mining regions transition towards agricultural, industrial and recreational use. This paper examines the German “exit from coal” under the 17 UN Sustainability Goals and illustrates the complex procedures, interrelationships, risks, and rewards of the transition towards renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydrogen, and bioresources.

Abstract. The commercial importance of hydroxyoximes as extractants for copper has given impetus to basic studies on the chemistry of metal extraction by these compounds. The discovery of accelerator compounds which produce catalytic effects on hydroxyoxime extraction rates has led to mechanistic studies of these rate processes. While these studies have highlighted the importance of interfacial chemical reactions in the extraction process, it is not yet possible to unambiguously describe the mechanisms of metal extraction in these systems or the associated catalytic effects. This paper reviews progress in understanding the mechanism of metal extraction by hydroxyoximes.

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970's. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

The Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating the recovery of phosphate from beneficiation slime, as part of the Bureau's efforts to conserve mineral resources through increased use of wastes. Phosphate equivalent to about two-fifths of U.S. production is discarded annually in the wastes. Exploratory flotation tests on the plus 5-um fraction of a slime sample showed promise for a classification-flotation technique. Onsite classification tests at six phosphate washing plants were conducted with a two-stage hydro cyclone system designed to recover the plus 5-um material. The cyclone underflows contained 8.3 to 19.1 percent P2O5, and the recovery of the plus 5-um PZOS values ranged from 81 to 95 percent. The percent P2O5 recovery from the total slimes ranged from 38 to 47 percent. Batch-flotation studies are currently being conducted.

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

As the mining industry faces increased challenges with declining ore grades and harder to access deposits, operating mine sites in an environmentally responsible and economically viable manner will require innovations that improve efficiency in energy logistics, and automation. Technological advancements in mining have been successful primarily because of the willingness and capability of these solutions to share information with one another, for example OEM payload systems sending information to Fleet Management Systems, and in turn Fleet Management Systems interfacing to ERP systems. To promote and facilitate the sharing of data, there has been a push towards open standards with initiatives led by organizations like ISO, ISA, EMESRT, and GMG. These efforts are aimed at creating a more collaborative and interoperable environment within the sector. However, when it comes to implementing autonomous solutions, a different trend dominates— closed-stack solutions. These closed stack solutions not only prohibit a mine site from selecting best-of-breed solutions, by blocking the competition from entering the market, they also risk slowing innovation that could help overcome the challenges the mining industry faces. Open Autonomy, an internationally published standard that allows any FMS to work with any Autonomous solution, breaks this closed-stack approach and invites competition from other industries. This competition comprises of autonomous suppliers from other industries and manufacturers of smaller, civil-sized haul trucks. The availability and capabilities of these smaller-sized autonomous haul trucks will help tackle the challenges of responsibly and economically mining lower quality ore grades and mining harder to access deposits.

"Mining is an inherently risky business. Over the years, major mine disasters have resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands of miners in the United States. These disasters also resulted in innovations in approaches to mine design, operations and the training of miners and mine rescue teams. The U.S. Congress responded to these disasters with new laws designed to create mandatory safety and health standards as a means to eliminate fatal accidents; to reduce the frequency and severity of nonfatal accidents; to minimize health hazards and to promote improved safety and health conditions in the nation’s mines.Following a mine emergency preparedness and response holistic gap analysis in 2012, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) identified the need for the development of risk and readiness assessment models for MSHA and the mining industry. MSHA’s objective was to evolve existing theoretical concepts for risk and readiness assessment into simplified tools that can be applied by the mining industry for use at operational levels. In 2012, MSHA hired ABS Group, a recognized industry leader in safety risk management and a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Bureau of Shipping, to develop self-assessment models to help meet this objective.In September 2012, MSHA chartered a project to supply the coal mining industry with a pro-active toolset for mine operators to:1. Self-assess the risks associated with underground coal mining operations in order to prevent major mine emergencies.2. Assess the preparedness of mine operators to respond to an emergency.3. Measure the readiness of mine rescue teams and responsible persons to execute emergency plans.MSHA’s objective was to evolve existing theoretical concepts for risk and readiness assessment into simplified tools that can be applied by the coal mining industry for use at operational levels."

A mining company plans to extend its surface coal-mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accountings for the site shows an overall Neutralization Potential to Maximum Potential Acidity Ratio (NP:MPA) of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to be mined. If traditional dragline-mining methods are used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. To prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using truck-shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, amine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Therefore, mining this site should not result in the formation of AMD.

Mining accidents due to inrushing water are caused by sudden changes in seepage owing to structural damage to key strata of the aquiclude. The backfill mining method can be used to control the movement of the strata, weaken the evolution of fractures owing to damage by key aquiclude strata (KAS), and control the channel for inrushing water. This study develops a mechanical model of a composite beam on a non-uniform elastic foundation of the KAS by analyzing the coupling relationship between the filling body and the key water-resisting layer of the aquiclude. Equations of the deflection-induced deformation, bending moment, and maximum tensile stress of the KAS are analyzed, formulae to calculate the allowable tensile stress and backfill materials’ compaction ratio (BMCR) to ensure structural stability are derived, and are used to provide the critical BMCR for their structural instability. The results of field measurements show that the subsidence of the roof was 600–700 mm with an average BMCR of 80.63%. Damage to the overlying strata was controlled to ensure safe mining and the disposal of solid waste from the aquifer. The research here is useful for ensuring safety during mining while protecting water resources.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. "The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

The development and use of short-lived radioactive tracer methods for the on-stream determination of residence time distributions in large-scale ball mills is described. Tests are reported on a pilot-plant ball mill with 0.43 m diameter and 0.86 m length and on an industrial mill with 1.83 m diameter and 2.74 m length. Tests with different tracer feed sizes indicate that the residence time distributions on both mills are independent of charge particle size. Similar tests are planned for a-large ball mill of 4.57 m diameter and 9.30 m length. No safety problems were encountered in these tests and none are anticipated in tests of the larger mill.

In January, 1969, the Central Research Division of Continental Oil Company initiated a research program on roof control. The purpose of the research was to improve roof stability. Toward this end, it was necessary to determine which of the many geological and geometrical variables have a significant effect on roof stability. The isolation of these significant variables would allow research effort to be concentrated where it would be most effective in improving roof control. The research effort was directed toward two major objectives. One was to de-fine the geological and/or geometrical parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. This study was concerned with roof fall intensity. The second was to define why roof falls in Humphrey No. mine (and in northern West Virginia-south-western Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. This study was concerned with roof fall orientation. To provide a reference framework for further discussion, a geological description of the area is presented in Part II. In Parts III and IV, the procedures, methods, and 'results of the research applied toward the afore-mentioned major objectives are presented. Part V contains the conclusions and recommendations for-warded by this study.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

Our industry is in trouble. Real trouble. It has never been an easy, secure business. But to-day it is engulfed in revolutionary currents. No longer can there be reliance upon the checks and balances of market forces. Supply and demand largely dictated the economics of business enterprise in simpler days. To-day politics, in particular nationalism become increasingly dominant. And as governments expand and put out tentacles of interference in the direction of the mining industry, far too little understanding is evidenced as to how that industry works. Then there is something which is relatively new -stagflation. As the prices of minerals falls, the capital investment required for new extractive facilities soars at rates which far outdistance those which are cited by governments to indicate the magnitude of inflation. To illustrate; 1) In 1971 it was calculated that $355 million would be required to bring the Cuajone property in Peru into production. Five years later that stage was reached at a cost of $680 million. 2) With the Caridad mine in Mexico, estimated capital investment doubled between 1971 and 1976. 3) The requirements calculated for Cerro Colorado in Panama have risen in two years from $560 to $800. 4) The budget of $240 million for Sar Chesmeh in Iran in 1971 had become $500 million by 1976.
