The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

Spontaneous combustion in underground coal mines has become a serious problem particularly in the caved area (gob). Recent statistic has shown that approximately 17% of total 87 underground coal mine fires in the United States are attributed to spontaneous combustion (De Rosa, 2004). Spontaneous combustion results from a self-heating process in exothermic conditions. The accumulated heat, if not removed, is conducive to the rapid increase of temperature and may result in mine fires or explosions. It is well accepted that the interaction between oxygen and coal substances is the main cause for spontaneous combustion, while other factors such as pyrite, moisture, and bacteria play a secondary role to the self-heating of coal. Therefore, only coal oxidation is considered in this study. Coal oxidation occurs as coal comes into contact with air. This process involves complex phenomena in terms of heat transfer, chemical surface absorption, and energy balance related to inherent properties of coal (Wang et al., 2003). For simulation purpose, overall reactions can be simplified as suggested by Mitchell (1990): C + O2 CO2 + heat [65°- 94°C] (1) CO2 + C 2CO + heat [100°- 150°C] (2) Stoichiometric reactions (1) and (2) show that 2.66 grams of oxygen are required to oxidize 1.0 gram of carbon. Once the temperature exceeds 100°C, the reaction has little chance to stop. The crucial step in reducing spontaneous combustion risk is locating the ignition point of spontaneous combustion (hot spot). This information is useful in the effort of developing a preventive method effectively. In this study, this was conducted based on the best gathered information: ventilation surveys conducted in an existing longwall mine located in the western US; the laboratory experiments performed on a physical gob model; and the CFD models to investigate the flow behavior in the gob, the oxidation of coal, and heat transfer phenomena. The hot spot location is determined as a function of oxygen concentration and gob temperature. The critical values are the following: 5% (by volume) for oxygen and 100°C for gob temperature. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOB MATERIAL AND MODELS Permeability Concept Permeability is one of the key parameters in any study dealing with porous medium. This is determined by particle size and the ratio of void volume to the total volume (porosity) of porous medium. This relationship is known as the Carman-Kozeny equation (Scheidegger, 1957) and is given mathematically as [ ] where k* = theoretical specific permeability, m2 dm = the mean particle size, m n = porosity However, permeability tests with various particle sizes were carried out at the University of Utah?s ventilation model (Figure 1) to verify this relationship. These tests indicated a necessity to modify this theoretical relationship. A factor of 0.898 was obtained to make up the different between theoretical permeability and the experimental one. The modified version of (3) is given by: [ ] This equation is used to determine permeability of the simulated mine gob throughout the study. [ ] Mine Gob Material The gob is represented by zones filled with material of given size distribution. For physical measurements and CFD simulations, the material used were crushed rock and coal. Due to compaction, three different characteristics of gob material were used in the model: unconsolidated, semiconsolidated, and consolidated. In the real condition, the largest coal-rock particles are more likely to be located in the area behind the shields. This material is freshly broken and unconsolidated. The size of these broken particles is based on a study carried out by analyzing images taken from the area behind the shields in three coal mines in the United States (Pappas and Mark, 1993). The results have shown that the mean size of materials behind the shields is about 1.22 m. The permeability associated with this size was then obtained from (4) and permeability tests. This was 4.68 x10-7 m2. For semiconsolidated and consolidated zones, due to the lack of experimental data, these were determined through CFD simulations. These simulations were designed by assigning a permeability of 3.15 x 10-8 m2 for consolidated zone and 7.98 x 10-9 m2 to the other zone. The airflow pattern in the gob assigned with given permeabilities was expected to follow the experimental distribution (Brunner, 1985). The mean particle sizes for the semi-consolidated and consolidated zones were 0.02 and 0.006 m, respectively; smaller than those of the unconsolidated zone. Figure 2 shows the 3D view of permeability changes in the gob.

K+S is one of the world’s leading suppliers of standard and specialty fertilizers. In the salt business, K+S, with sites in Europe as well as North and South America, is the world’s leading producer. The mine sites of K+S are distributed all over the world producing mainly potash and magnesium salts and rock salt. Focus is on the sustainable use of the natural deposits in order to stay competitive. For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

Nowadays, stakeholders have a strong say to the enforcement of best practices by mining and quarrying companies. In most cases there is a direct relationship between sustainable development principles and best practices. Mining companies try to apply best practices in order to sustain their operation without lost time and effort to litigation, and other obstacles. However, when and where there is a lack of state or regional mineral policy, or when the mineral policy is fragmented and touching on conflicting laws, mining operations may be subject to additional administrative hassles, and, thus, operators feel threatened and tend to apply best practices loosely. This paper argues that the only way that mining and minerals operations can be a source of development is to ensure that they are working within the framework of sustainable development. Furthermore, in order to follow the paradigm of sustainable development they would need to be guided by a regional, national or even transnational (i.e. European) minerals policy.

Weathered mine waste consists of oxidized primary minerals and chemically unstable secondary phases that can be sources of readily soluble metals and acid rock drainage. Elevated concentrations of metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn are observed in deionized water-based leachate solutions derived from complex sedex and Cu-Pb-Zn mine wastes. Leachate (USGS FLT) from the Elizabeth mine, a massive sulfide deposit, has a pH of 3.4 and high concentrations of Al (16700 ug/L), Cu (440 ug/L), and Zn (8620 ug/L). Leachate from the sedex Faro mine has a pH of 3.5 and high concentrations of Al (2040 ug/L), Cu (1930 ug/L), Pb (2080 ug/L), and Zn (52900 ug/L). In contrast, higher-pH leachates produced from tailings of polymetallic vein deposits have order of magnitude lower metal concentrations. These data indicate that highly soluble secondary mineral phases exist at the surface of waste material where the samples were collected. Sulfide minerals from all sites exhibit differential degrees of weathering, from dissolution etched grain rims, to rinds of secondary minerals, to skeletal remnants. These microscale mineral-dissolution textures enhance weathering and metal leachability of waste material. Besides the formation of secondary minerals, sulfide grains from dried tailings samples may be coated by amorphous Fe-Al-Si minerals that also adsorb metals such as Cu, Ni, and Zn.

Empirical and numerical methods are the two extremes of the tools available for the seismic design of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Both have their limitations: when relying on purely empirical methods directly relevant experience may be scant; site data may be insufficient to justify a comprehensive dynamic analysis. The primary purpose of this paper is to review the analytical tools available to the design engineer of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Particular attention is devoted to simplifed models that appear to be applicable in many practical cases.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

The traditional method for training personnel in the mining and other heavy industries has been face-to-face, either via a lecturer in a classroom or through an apprenticeship. With the advent of applications tools such as video, computers, and the Internet, however, a much broader range of training delivery methods is available. Especially exciting are the broad capabilities of multimedia packages that combine the best features of numerous delivery methods. Applying multimedia environments in training holds great potential, especially when there is considerable difficulty in reconstructing real training environments. The authors discuss various delivery methods currently used in training employees, including perceived advantages and disadvantages of those methods. The authors then discuss and evaluate current computer-based training efforts of the mining industry and present an example of a multimedia training tool.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Almost any subsidence monitoring program may face the following difficulties:

The use of refuge chambers for use in handling underground emergencies is an issue of topical relevance within the US mining industry. Chamber design is of importance to meet some new safety requirements of US federal and some state government mine regulations. A review has been undertaken of a steel mine refuge chamber design to predict what will be internal temperature within the chamber over an extended period with miners present? The design has been examined for the situation when the chamber is sited in still mine air. Spreadsheets have been developed to allow various design assumptions to be tested. The evaluation has been undertaken using thermodynamic heat transfer models with some assumptions specified to produce a model of appropriate simplicity but with adequate degree of accuracy. Under normal still air conditions it can be seen that internal chamber conditions rise quickly to often arduous conditions. There will always be quite a few assumptions necessary in complex heat transfer process evaluations. Some important refuge chamber design parameters are: ? External surface area of the chamber, its wall thickness and construction. ? Metabolic heat generated and number of persons making use of the chamber. ? The temperature of the external mine atmosphere to the chamber over the year and the influence of geothermal gradient on temperature at depth. ? The maximum internal chamber Apparent Temperature considered safe. ? The distance inside the underground mine and adjacent ventilation conditions.

For the third successive year it appears that demand for platinum will exceed supplies of newly-mined metal, forecasts Johnson Matthey in its "Platinum 1987 Interim Review." Based on data available at the end of August 1987, Johnson Matthey estimates that western world demand for platinum could exceed 93t (3 million oz) for the first time ever in 1987. Given a likely increase in demand of 4.3t to around 94t (140,000 oz to around 3.02 million oz), up by about 5% over 1986, there would be a 1.8- to 2.2-t (60,000- to 70,000-oz) shortfall in 1987 supply. South African mines enjoying undisrupted production last year after strikes affected Impala's output in 1986. The rate of increases in western world supplies, though, has probably not kept pace with the growth in demand. A downturn in US demand for platinum was counterbalanced by substantially increased purchases from Japanese and Western European consumers of the metal. Total imports of platinum into Japan in 1987 may have reached a record level of 45t (1.45 million oz). The largest source of demand for platinum remains its use in autocatalysts US and Japanese auto manufacturers reduced their platinum purchases in the wake of falling car production. Therefore, a small decline in overall 1987 sales of perhaps 780 kt (25,000 oz) was expected in 1987. Western European demand, however, rose strongly as a result of increased output. The spread of exhaust emission control regulations has sharply boosted the number of cars equipped with three-way catalysts containing platinum and rhodium. Western European auto makers probably needed 5.6t (180,000 oz) of platinum last year, a 50% increase over 1986. The jewelry industry, the second largest user of platinum, increased its offtake of platinum in 1987. Japan, the key to the jewelry industry's consumption of platinum, could absorb 24.8 to 26.4 (800,000 to 850,000 oz) in 1987, compared with 23t (740,000 oz) in 1986. Platinum has wide and diverse applications in industry. Other major users are the chemical, glass, electronics and petroleum industries. They were expected to increase their aggregate demand by about 1.8t (60,000 oz), or 11% in 1987. Investment demand for small platinum bars and coins of up to 311g (10 oz) dropped back in relatively inhospitable conditions. This, after rapid increases in recent years and a surge in US demand in 1986. However, Japanese investors purchasing bars weighing 500g or 1 kg (16 to 32 oz), and considered more speculative, recovered last year. Over the first eight months of 1987, platinum performed strongly on the open market with average prices well up from 1986 in dollar terms. But the increase was less marked where measured in sterling or yen. Platinum ad¬vanced by $3.70/g ($115 per oz) between Jan. 1 and mid-September with the average price having been surpassed only in the heady days of 1980. Johnson Matthey believes that supply and demand appear likely to keep more or less in step on a gently rising path. The recent open market volatility will continue with prices fluctuating widely over short periods. Writing in mid-September, and basing its view on the tangible evidence of platinum's price fall since the review was written, the company's assessment of price prospects is unchanged. Demand for platinum remains strong all-round. In October, imports of platinum into Japan were exceptionally high. And in the US and Japan there was a marked resurgence of demand from private investors. Although market sentiment may have been influenced in part by the news of several potential new platinum mines in South Africa, the full effects of these prospects on supply, even if they were all to materialize, would not be felt before the early-mid 1990s, Johnson Matthey said. According to the review, no radical change in platinum supplies is discernible in the near-term. Incremental growth from South Africa can be expected as the major producers continue to make the most of their existing resources. The Soviet Union may be keener to sell than it appeared earlier in 1987, especially if prices hold up, but a substantial increase is improbable. Canadian supplies are not capable of much variation from present levels. The palladium-rich Stillwater mine will make a modest contribution. Referring to the investment market, Johnson Matthey concluded that despite this year's reduction in sales of small-denomination investment products, platinum does appear to have established itself with private investors. Bearing in mind how business multiplied in comparatively unfavorable conditions before 1986, it is reasonable to look for a resumption of growth once the climate improves.

The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

One of the best kept technology secrets in U.S coalmining history involved a robust coal geophysics program used by a local coal company to detect and map various geologic anomalies and man-made structures ahead of mining for nearly 15 years. Several original mine plans were changed as a result of findings from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) seismic data. They indicated the presence of geologic anomalies in reserve areas that could adversely impact future mine development and longwall production. By combining the surface seismic and exploratory drilling methods, the coal company learned how to properly leverage its risk by gathering a lot of useful subsurface information before making major commitments.

Many excavation and loading tasks require equipment operators to simultaneously coordinate the motion of multiple machine links, in order to achieve complex tool trajectories. Efficiency, ore selectivity, and machine wear, are all affected by the skill level and attentiveness of the operator. A software-based kinematics reconfiguration system designed to assist operators with various tasks has been implemented on a small experimental excavator using our new differential control architecture. Kinematics transformation and feedback control algorithms are being developed and tested using computer simulation, and the results implemented on the experimental excavator. Several task-specific kinematics transformations, including a virtual revolute-to-Cartesian machine reconfiguration and computer-assisted bucket steering and stabilization have been successfully tested. Progress, challenges, results, expected benefits, and planned work are described.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it.
