The present study has been conducted in surface limestone mine to select the controllable blasting design parameters affecting the peak particle velocity (PPV) for assessment of ground vibration. The study aims at using two prominent statistical tools, namely, principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise selection and elimination (SSE) techniques for identifying the key controllable parameters affecting the PPV. For determining the correlation coefficient between blasting design parameters and PPV from 44 field scale trial blasts, multi-variate linear regression (MLR) technique was done. It was found that the PCA and SSE eliminated a huge number of controllable parameters to identify the most important parameters, affecting the PPV. The PCA eliminated 6 number of parameters while SSE eliminated 5 number of parameters, and the coefficients of determination (R2) obtained were 0.616 and 0.584 for PCA and SSE respectively. The predictor equations were evolved, and these equations were used to validate the PPV results for another set of 21 field scale trial blasts. The predictor equations have been found to be fairly accurate in predicting the PPV values. Further, the PCA technique provides very near prediction of PPV with high degree of correlation in comparison to SSE technique. The paper highlights the role of state-of-art statistical tools in selecting the blasting design parameters affecting the PPV in field-scale blasting.

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority(WMATA) officially came into existence in February 1967 after the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia joined in a com¬pact pursuant to Federal creative legislation signed the previous November to build a regional rapid rail transit system called METRO (1). The parent organization was the National Capital Transportation Agency (NCTA), a Federal agency, subject to Federal statutes and regulations. Soon after the completion of the transition from NCTA to the new "non-Federal" status of the Authority, the Board of Directors of the Authority formally adopted procurement policies and procedures (2). These are specific statements concerning competition by formal advertising for bids or by solicitation of proposals for negotiation, contracting authority, approval of awards, awards of contract modifications, and processing of claims and disputes. These policies and procedures are silent as to Federal procurement statutes and regulations. But because of the Authority's origin, the sensitive nature of the compact among the several sovereign jurisdictions, Federal financing of two-thirds of the costs, and the resultant surveillance by the General Accounting Office over staff operations, the Authority's procurement practices follow closely Federal regulations adapted to WMATA's needs. This is an important point and is the foundation of contractual relations between the Authority as the owner and its construction contractors. Various constraints and flexibilities of this arrangement with respect to excavation and tunneling contracts will be pointed out in the ensuing discussions.

For leach solutions containing primarily free cyanide, the silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method significantly over-estimates the concentration of free cyanide and under-estimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to fully release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, accurate WAD cyanide measurements were achieved using the MP-WAD method. Analyses obtained with the new method were found to be within about ±10% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.

Primary economical deposits of rare-earth elements (REEs) are exhausting all over the world, and it has become necessary to find new sources and methods for their extraction. In addition, increasing the application of REEs in modern technological society has increased its demand globally. One of the important movements to compensate for the future shortages of critical metals is the recovery of REEs from recyclable materials. This paper presents a review of the classification and extraction methods, as well as general applications of REEs with emphasis on secondary sources such as coal and coal byproducts, iron ore tailings, apatite, and phosphate byproducts. An overview of the current state of knowledge on the various methods of REE beneficiation and extraction is covered. These methods include physical separation, as well as hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these REE extraction techniques for enhanced recovery has been driven primarily by the unique industrial application of these important elements. This paper further explores the existing and potential environmental challenges associated with REE extraction. The authors have presented a wide array of literature, in-depth discussion of the subject, and a succinct summary of processes and relevant case studies.

"Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership of KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining and Sumitomo Corp. (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda openpit mine and coppermolybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, wellinstrumented mine in Chile. This article contains a general review of the project including geology and history.This was a fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill startup in 10 years. Highly experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied.The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (Fig. 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km (3 miles) from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m (5,600 ft) above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km (37 miles) northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic and Escondida, to name a few.The primary organizational value at Sierra Gorda is "Zero Harm." This includes employees, contractors, the environment, the community, plant facilities and mine equipment. A cornerstone of this program is called 5X5S (five by five S), which combines the lean principles of 5S with the safety model of taking five steps back and thinking about the task at hand for five seconds, five minutes, the time it takes to assess and manage the risk. "People caring about people" promotes proactive engagement in the safety of coworkers and others at work and at home."

Digital transformation (DT) is the process by which entities adapt themselves to modern technology. As digital technology becomes more prevalent (automation, cameras, sensors, touchscreens, artificial intelligence, etc.), there will be increased pressure on companies to leverage it for additional gains. For many companies in the mining industry, this will involve overcoming a steep learning curve. Furthermore, as the long-term success of the mining industry is dependent on a labor force with new skills (data management, analytics, digital literacy, etc.), new curriculum will need to be appended to the mining engineering discipline. This paper considers the mining industry’s need for DT. Then, it presents a three-part review of the foundational components of the DT process–ubiquitous data, connectivity, and decision making. Finally, it provides a discussion on the future of DT in mining as well as a research direction, which identifies the need of academia to provide support for mining companies in the form of both research and the education of digitally literate, dynamically capable mining engineers into the coming decades.

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and pointcloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion-point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point-cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors, such as site-specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using the Discontinuity Set Extractor (DSE) opensource software. Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from prototypes to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become critical to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width. This will, therefore, generate potentially significant reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and its associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road.This article presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined partly from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this article, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images that are analyzed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration.Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. Critical minerals are becoming more important in our technological society because they are used in many of our electronic devices, batteries, and magnets. In New Mexico, low to moderate concentrations of critical minerals are found in Late Cretaceous coal and related strata in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, REE, and Critical Minerals) program. The New Mexico coal, humate, and clinker deposits are relatively low in REE (<325 ppm TREE), Li (<90 ppm), V (<168 ppm), Co (<51 ppm), Ni (<108 ppm), Zr (<557 ppm), and many other critical minerals compared to normal economic deposits. Some of these rocks are enriched in Al2O3 (<40%) and Sr (<3740 ppm), both critical minerals. Common minerals hosting the critical minerals in these rocks include clay minerals, zircon, and rutile/anatase. As the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Ultimately, economic potential will most likely depend upon production of more than one commodity, maybe even from coal, humate, and clinker deposits.

"The last few decades have seen some remarkable advancement in information technology, but recently various digital technologies have resulted in several synergies to deliver innovation in diverse applications. The mining industry has been relatively slow in adopting these technologies compared to the other industries, but this scenario is changing fast.Challenges. Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stake-holders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance.Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus among some mining companies to imbibe operational excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos-based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organizations is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions, such as through mine-to-mill initiatives in the mining industry, have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turnover and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate level.Opportunities. The advent of digital technology has opened up opportunities to integrate interdepartmental information for a unified understanding across an entire organization. South Bulga is a new longwall operation located in the Hunter Valley coal-mining region in Southeastern Australia. The mine’s objective is to achieve productivity levels significantly higher than the current industry average. From the day longwall production began, South Bulga’s output was below both budget and industry expectations, primarily because of the poor performance of the conveyor system. In the past, conveyor systems have been seen as an adjunct to the mine plan, not as an integral part. At past production levels, this approach may have been acceptable. In today’s mining operations, the conveyor system must be treated as integral and vital to the mining operation. The conveyor system is analogous to the vascular or circulatory system of the human body. Of itself, the system does not do anything, but if it is not functioning satisfactorily, the mine cannot operate.

The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

As we compete for close margins in wholesale sales, the effects of both quality and price have a major impact on the cost of producing electricity.SO2 emission allowances have traded as low as$60/ton to as high as $215/ton over the last three years. This price spread in emission allowances clearly demonstrates the correlation between the quality of fuels versus the price utilities will be willing to pay for them. This paper provides an overview of the effects of the qualities of fuel, coupled with transportation as well as environmental concerns on the price of fuel and the ability to compete in a deregulated electric market.

"Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the last decade. Accidents rates are at a “plateau” and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas Refinery disaster, organizations that have “exemplary” safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters, the BP’s Deepwater Horizon Rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Looking into the causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset, or its culture? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since1995, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions of near zero organizations (NZO) that suffered unexpected disasters, based on extensive research by the author. More recently, the massive West Fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, and the Train Disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada underlined the same trends. Organizations may experience calamities not because they are bad, or unsafe, but because they have become “cult-like”. INTRODUCTION The train disaster of 6 July 2013, in the small town of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec, Canada, in which 47 people were killed, had many strange pre-cursorsso-called “black swan” events that have occurred in many different industries. Black swan events are so rare, that there is almost zero chance that they will ever occur again, but they are so calamitous that the responses to these are emotional and irrational, (but necessary) and in those responses, the seeds for other, different black swan events are put into place. It is not what we don’t do, or do wrong, that causes modern disasters, it is what we do. The same things in the culture that make us successful, may also cause the disasters. We slowly, incrementally and insidiously ‘float’ into disaster. One such Black Swan event: The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster, killing 167 men in the North Sea on the 6 September 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry."

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one&apos;s bias and I suspect that my contractor&apos;s outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

Siskon Gold has started gold production at the San Juan deposit in northern California. The mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) north of Nevada City, CA (Fig. 1). It is scheduled to be-come the largest underground gold mine in California. It is situated in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the Mother Lode gold belt. The property consists of 8 km2 (2,000 acres) of patented land. It is situated in a topographically high area known as San Juan Ridge, which is 213 m (700 ft) above and between the Middle Yuba and South Yuba rivers. The elevation is between 790 and 914 m (2,600 and 3,000ft) above sea level. Annual precipitation averages 1,346mm (53 in.). Most of that falls between November and April.

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

One of the critical challenges facing the mining industry ? and not just in the United States ? is the looming labor shortage. A significant percentage of the industry?s professional workforce is, well, getting old, and many will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This is not a new issue to the industry. It has been discussed at various industry meetings and conferences for many years. How does mining, with its largely negative public image, attract young people to mining schools? And, equally important, who is going to teach them? Mining schools, what?s left of them in the United States, are beginning to lose qualified faculty to retirements, and no one is available to replace them. SME addressed this issue during the keynote session at its annual meeting in February in Denver, CO. This year?s theme was ?Mining: It?s About the People.? Despite a blizzard that blanketed the city on the day most attendees were to have arrived, the meeting still attracted a record 7,202 people. And the accompanying exhibit sold 822 booths, also a record. The U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory contracted with the National Academies? National Research Council to complete a study concerning the availability of skilled workers to meet the energy and mineral security requirements for the United States. The National Research Council, in turn, asked SME to collect and analyze workforce trends in these industries. The result of SME?s analysis is the report ?Emerging Workforce Trends in the U.S. Energy and Minerals Industries.? It is available on the SME website, www.smenet.org. Click on Government Affairs. While the report did not paint a completely dismal picture, there were some disturbing results. It concluded that within 20 years there will not be a sufficient number of skilled professionals to satisfy the labor demand. That said, the report said that most of those positions would likely be filled. However, the U.S. mining will go through a period of time when the workforce will be made up of very young and senior workers.
