My first contact with underground, bolt conveyors came when I was hired as a draftsman by the La-Del Conveyor & Manufacturing Company in 1935. At that tine relatively few nines were using haulage belt conveyors. Wore they were in use, they were usually loaded by chain or shaker type room conveyors which in turn were hand loaded at the working face. Duo to the low room tonnage, a gathering belt might receive who output of from six to eight rooms. For several years belts 26 and 30" in width were the favorites for coal mine use. Belt speeds very seldom exceeded 200 ft. per mm. at that time. Conveyor lengths for the majority of units lay between 1.000 and 2000 ft. For a number of years 25 H.P. drives were adequate for those conveyors. From 1940 until about 1950 loads and speeds went up slightly and 40 H.P. drives became the standard. Since the majority of mines were then using direct current power systems, we were able to use controllers with 3 or more steps of starting resistance. The slow belt speeds coupled with relatively long starting cycles kept the rate of acceleration low and gave us smooth, easy starts.

"INTRODUCTION The Shatin to Central Link (SCL) is a new rail line being constructed by the MTR Corporation for the Government of Hong Kong to cater for the growing passenger demand between the North-East New Territories and the urban areas of the city. Contract 1103, which will provide the 4 km of running tunnels between the new Hin Keng and Diamond Hill Stations, was tendered in a design-build framework and awarded to Vinci Construction Grands Projets (VCGP) in October 2012, with Arup as Vinci’s lead designer. One of the most challenging pieces of work on the contract involved the construction of 133m of SEM mined tunnel on the northern end of the project. The Northern Mined Section (NMS) is an undrained, twin-track, single bore profile, broken out through the southern pipe pile wall of the Hin Keng Station cut-and-cover box, Figure 1. The tunnel has maximum excavated dimensions of 14.5m span x 12m height, with track spacing of 6.175m. The general excavation sequence consisted of 3 stages; a 6m high top heading (73.1m2), followed by bench (27.3m2), and invert (26.7m2). A risk-based approach to the design was taken given the large variation in rock level, cover, and an active stream course above tunnel crown. Ultimately, six different temporary support types were utilized in order to optimize the construction process through continually changing ground while maintaining a safe and stable excavation. Three main support types were developed during the initial design phase, along with a “contingency” case, which utilized a partial heading excavation sequence and enhanced face support. The purpose of the contingency support type was to have a robust, engineered design available for immediate implementation should unexpected ground behavior develop, leading to the breaching of instrumentation trigger levels. This support type was never implemented on site. Drill- and-blast tunneling commenced once 6m of rock cover was verified through forward probing. A robust instrumentation and monitoring scheme provided valuable data throughout excavation and the means to carry out a geotechnical back-analysis of the ground behavior and support performance."

The National Italian Regulation concerning environment protection imposes that industrial areas are provided with systems aimed at preventing the circulation of contaminated groundwater. These systems can be static or dynamic and operate basically by intercepting the contaminated flow. Their effectiveness, realization time and costs depend on the intervention type and on the features of the specific site. The selection of the best solution is complex and the results obtained by this selection may be affected by residual risks related to the uncertainty of the hydrogeological and geotechnical characterization of the site. With regard to the industrial area of Portovesme, located in the south of Sardinia, the paper presents the analysis of alternative interventions aimed at the protection of the groundwater. The attention is focused on the evaluation of their effectiveness, impact on environment and, finally, time and costs of construction.

In spite of all the work that has already been done on ferromanganese deposits, studies on the Atlantic Ocean occurrences are still in their infancy and there is a clear need for investigations concerning the origin, distribution, and resource potential assessment of these deposits. Nevertheless, studies already carried out on northeast Atlantic seamounts indicate the general presence of ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenetic origin, i.e. deposits formed by direct precipitation of colloidal, hydrated metal oxides that are scavenged from the water column on hard-rock substrates. The hydrogenetic precipitation promotes the enrichment of ferromanganese crusts in many trace metals, most of which are of economic interest, such as Co, Ni, Te, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements and thus ferromanganese crusts are considered an important metal resource.

Parameter estimation of the inverse distance estimation algorithm is presented. The objective function to be minimized is a sum of squared cross validation errors. The unknowns to be estimated are the exponent of the inverse distance estimator and anisotropic angles and ratios that are used in determining the distances in the algorithm. Examples are presented for both two and three dimensions data sets.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. In concrete lined tunnels, formwork removal timing may be controversial. Contractors seek to strip the form as soon as possible, and designers seek to keep the formwork in place as long as practical to protect the fresh concrete. Formwork removal timing is normally specified as a function to its insitu concrete strength. This approach may work for smaller diameter tunnels, but fallacy occurs when applying this approach to larger diameter tunnels, since a larger diameter would experience more displacement than a smaller diameter tunnel from its own weight. Excessive deformation may fail a tunnel to meet its roundness criterion and overstress the lining causing cracking or falling from the crown. This paper presents a contractual mechanism to mitigate this issue.

Illinois No. 6 coals of IBC 101 and IBC 112 were treated in solution with sodium hypochlorite to remove their sulfur contents, especially organic sulfur. The lab experiments were conducted in two steps of leaching at room temperature and hydrolysis at 90oC. The removal of organic sulfur from IBC 101 was by 37.8% while that from IBC 112 was only 13.7% under their respective optimum conditions. This large difference in organic sulfur removal is considered to be due to difference in concentration of surface total acid group, 3.14 vs. 0.88 mmol/g of coal.

JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) became the first entity to sign an exploration contract for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts (Crusts) with the ISA (the International Seabed Authority). The contract was signed on 27 January 2014, and 15 years exclusive rights for exploration activities had started in the contracted area, located in the North-Western Pacific Ocean. JOGMEC had already conducted basic scientific surveys around the contracted area from 1987 to 2012. Activities by JOGMEC that will be undertaken during the first 5 years of the contract include examination of geological and acoustic surveys, environmental baselines surveys, and undertaking basic studies of R&D in mining, processing, and smelting technologies. Geological surveys will include analysis of rock core samples, using BMS (Benthic Multi-coring System). Deep-towed TV Camera will be used to estimate the distribution of crusts deposit and to get basic environmental data of deep-sea megabenthos. Water sampling, marine sediment sampling, and installation of mooring systems on the seafloor will also be conducted as a part of environmental surveys.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. Coupled influence of sulphidizers and xanthates on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite was systematically examined via electrophoretic mobility measurements and microflotation tests. The electrophoretic mobility results for the malachite before and after surface modification with different types (Na2S and (NH4)2S) and amounts (1×10-7?1×10-4 moles/g) of sulphidizers, showed that the isoelectric points (IEP) of malachite differed at the low dosage level depending on the type of the sulphidizer, which ranged between 5 and 9.5. However, the IEP values were observed to be shifted from high to low pH values with increasing amount of sulphidizers and finally ranged between 3 and 4, indicating that the sulphidizers played a different role on changing the surface property of malachite. In order to further understand the effect of sulphidizers on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite in a sulphidizer+xanthate system, flotation tests were carried out with malachite sulphidized with Na2S and (NH4)2S (adsorptive amount=8×10-5 moles/g) at different bulk xanthate concentrations. The results showed that the flotability of (NH4)2S-treated malachite was greater than Na2S-treated one over the entire xanthate concentration investigated, indicating that the type of sulphidizers played important role in malachite flotation; however, no obvious correlation between electrokinetic property and flotability of malachite was observed.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). The author attempted to concurrently apply the US Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and the Australian VALMIN Code to a complex mineral property appraisal assignment. This led the author into many severe difficulties. These difficulties included the high standards needed in the work of others, and information and statements needed from the client. The exercise also highlighted many positive features of both documents. Some conflicts were found between the two documents. Implications and thoughts regarding the development of a set of US minerals appraisal standards are discussed.

Construction projects may be delivered under one contract package or multiple packages divided by discipline, geographic location, or other characteristics. Dividing the construction into contract bid packages is called contract packaging, and is a vital and strategic aspect of effectively delivering tunneling projects. The process of contract packaging considers many factors, including the type of project, location, and owner?s priorities. This paper describes the key facets of the contract packaging process used recently on several tunnel projects, reports, where possible, on the success of the process, and concludes with recommendations for applying this process to achieve the right contract package.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.

In recent years, domestic coal mining companies have become more attentive to the contribution safety and loss control programs have on their financial results. Although most have adopted fairly conventional safety programs, some have created systems and processes tailored to their unique circumstances. While each coal mining business must consider the typical risks inherent to our industry, excellence in safety is most likely achieved when a safety program is customized to meet the needs of the individual business.

The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles)northeast of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is owned by Getchell Gold Corp. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 to 671 m (1,400to 2,200 ft) along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate in the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.

Lime addition to acid mine drainage waters (AMD), possibly accompanied by aeration, has been the basis for their remediation by precipitation of predominantly metal hydroxides. An efficient novel alternative technique causes precipitation of double M(II)-M(III) hydroxy sulfates which readily precipitate and are easily dewatered. When the Fe(II)/Fe(III) + Al(III) ratio of the AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate (GP) Process provides a more effective alternative to normal liming/aeration. The process can be adapted to give a continuous in-line treatment by the choice of suitable computer-controlled reactors designed to improve the liming efficiency, reduce scaling and control the rate of treatment. The processes are described in terms of the chemistry involved.

Three rock tunnel sewer systems are underway in the Chicago Area. (Figure 1) The three are designed to act independently and to be later connected to the future tunnels of the master plan. The tunnel excavation for each of the systems has been completed. One is in the Northwest area within the City being built by the City, known as the Lawrence Ave. System. Another is in the Southwest suburbs, known as the LaGrange-Brookfield Sewer or Southwest 13A, being built by the Sanitary District, the third is in the South suburbs called the Crawford Avenue sewer or Calumet 18-E, Ext. A- being built as a joint venture between the City and the District. The three are similar in that they have the same purpose, the same component parts and their tunnels were constructed in the nigaran limestone using a mechanical mining machine. The purpose of each of the systems is two-fold. First to provide flood relief for existing inadequate sewer systems, and second to reduce the pollution load to the waterways caused by combined sewer overflows. The existing systems in the areas to be relieved are combined sewers built many years ago. The main outlet for the Village of LaGrange, for example, was built in 1908, is badly in need of repair and lacks the capacity to handle the flood flow from the heavily urbanized area it now serves. Silver paste including nano sized particles maintains conductivity in high temperatures without forming oxide layers. In the industry, printing process produces wasted silver paste inside the cylinder and on silk-screen. Pyrometallugical silver recycling methods have environmental problems and do not extract pure silver after removing polymer and organic materials during the extraction process. In this study a simple wet process, of recycling the waste silver paste, using ammonia, was conducted. Silver ion extraction yield was increased using oxidant in the ammonia solution. Possible extraction yields, such as pH, concentration, temperature of ammonia, oxidant concentration and the extraction time. The particles that were obtained after the extraction process will be used as porous hydrophobic catalytic and applied to AI mask and hydrophobic ink.
