Cyclic voltammetric and potential step chronoam-perometric techniques were used to study gold dissolution in cyanide solution. Three distinct anodic and one cathodic peaks appear on the voltammogram between -0.50 and 0.80 V vs SCE. The corresponding reactions were proposed to explain the peaks and the passivations. The proposed reactions were in agreement with the effect of pH, cyanide concentration and the rotating speed of the electrode on the magnitude of the peak currents. Cyclic voltammetric tests, with various vertex potentials, were also conducted to examine the proposed reactions. Steady-state currents at various potentials were obtained by potential step chronoamperometric technique and were compared with transient currents obtained by the cyclic voltammetric technique.

Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost more than $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high costs make extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. Operations research techniques are used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate, over 35%, of the total US longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation was used to generate models of transfers under Carving conditions; and the economic feasibility of tine-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure was investigated.

San Juan Coal Co. (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, NM. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 6.3 to 7.2 Mt/a (7 million to 8 million stpy). SJCC is owned and operated by BHP Billiton. The coal seam at SJCC has been shown to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during the feasibility study for this project, it was elected to use a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Due to the combination of spontaneous combustion, methane liberation and, to a lesser extent, hydrogen sulfide, a typical wraparound ventilation system would not be appropriate. Three-entry gate roads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC uses a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Estimation of high grade epithermal vein deposits can present challenges in correctly representing the continuity of grade within an undulating structure. One solution to this problem is to use dynamic anisotropy to follow local variations in the strike and dip of veins. Dynamic anisotropy (D.A.) allows the search parameters to change block by block throughout the model to account for the local variations. Presented here is a study of a vein that changes orientation down-dip. A traditional resource estimate using one search ellipse orientation was performed. The resulting estimated grades did not accurately reflect those of the sample data. Using a search ellipse with an average value for the two distinct dips caused the grade estimation to be less representative than desired. Rather than performing domain-based analysis with different search ellipses, the issue was corrected by using Datamine Studio 3?s D.A. function. The 3D vein trend was used to estimate the dip and dip direction of the vein in each block. The resulting D.A.-estimated model follows the two dip trends of the vein. This software makes a previously tedious task faster, and allows for more accurate estimations.

The choice of ventilation schemes in the Northern Mujsky railway tunnel and definition of the nec-essary quantities of air ensuring regulated radiation conditions in the tunnel system has been accomplished. The influence of natural draught on the stability of tunnel ventilation has been estimated. The design of a portal venti-lation gate allowing minimal influence from natural factors is described. The dependence of pressure loss in the sliding ventilation gates on their spanning value of the vehicle tunnel section has been determined. The selection of parameters for an atmospheric air heating system in winter has been carried out. The operation regimes of air heaters, dependent on the temperature of atmospheric air, have been established.

The replacement of the dry mining method at Guajú Mine by the dredging method was a means of ensuring its feasibility by maintaining the production levels. Dry mining increased the cost of the deposit with the distance and presented a limited mined volume, while the decreasing grade of the deposit led to a production drop. With the new methodology, there was a considerable reduction in unit cost of the mine and an increase in the production level of a deposit with low heavy minerals content.

The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. By oxidizing the pyrite matrix through biological leaching of precious metals ores or concentrates, better than 90% recovery of gold and silver is achieved. The paper develops three precipitation processes that eliminates arsenic and all other toxic elements in the resulting liquor after the biological reactors. In addition, the precipitates are highly crystalline and resist resolubilization. The latter must be tested for at least six months by EPA test procedures. The three systems are temperature (must be at least 120°C or higher) lime or limestone. A continuous pilot plant was employed for all three systems and complete recommendations are given to optimize Fe/As molar ratio, reaction kinetics (detention time) pH, temperature, wt % feed solids as well as resultant reagent consumption based upon continuous operation.

An ongoing research program is characterizing the ore qualities that most affect mine and mill processing of iron. Current practice uses assays of magnetic iron and silica, but additional qualities are needed for advanced process control. If additional qualities can be measured from core, blastholes, or process samples, they can be modeled and controlled similarly. What qualities, other than assays, hinder or facilitate beneficiation at each processing step, and how can they be measured in the mine/mill ore stream? This paper describes preliminary determinations of the effects of ore chemistry, hardness, blasthole drill performance, fragmentation control, and grindability on mill performance.

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.

Continuous developments in tunneling require knowledge transfer between designers and suppliers to optimize the application of support systems. This collaboration allows the designer access to the latest research results, technical innovations, and support specific measurement techniques as well as the supplier?s experiences on recent projects. Project specific requirements determine the information that can be used to increase support system efficiency, advance rate, degree of safety, or decrease costs. This cooperative effort results in not only an unambiguous tender document, but also an optimized design with reduced risk that is coordinated with safe and high performance construction techniques. This paper will address the benefits of an early collaboration to both the design and the specifications in the tender document by using the A3 Hindhead project (UK) as an example.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.

The development of technologies to improve mining and mineral processing is an ongoing process. These new technologies are the result of the industry’s drive to lower costs and improve productivity. Many technical conferences allow mining industry professionals to learn about these new technologies and possibly implement them in their own operations. In early November 2005, The 14th symposium on Mine Planning and Equipment Selection (MPES) was held in Banff, Alberta. It was jointly held with the Fifth International Conference on Computer Applications in the Minerals Industries (CAMI).

Laboratory experiments were performed on a Brazilian diatomite from Bahia State to produce an industrial product for use as a filter aid. Bench and pilot plant tests were conducted consisting of: diatomite desegregation, organic matter and clay removal, filtration, drying and calcination. Calcination temperature and sodium carbonate addition influenced diatomite particle size distribution. Optimum filtration rates for calcined products were obtained at 900°C and 47 min. residence time with 3% (w/w) of sodium carbonate addition, and resultant products met specifications imposed on filter aids.

During 1975, the Reclasource Corporation constructed and commissioned a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust, blast furnace sludge and basic oxygen furnace dust at the site of Crucible Alloy Division, Midland, Pennsylvania. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This Process takes the solid in-plant fines as listed above, commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes and forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system and cures the binder through a final heat-treating step. 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets have been tested in the Crucible blast furnace in several campaigns structured to assess material handling properties, burden feasibility and finally culminating in an iron and carbon assessment campaign. Data are presented from the records of the blast furnace operation and conclusions are drawn that both iron and carbon utilization have been demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION In late 1970, an experimental geophysical program was undertaken at the Lake Huron Tunnel for the purpose of developing a geophysical technique that could be applied to determining the thickness of rock above the crown of the tunnel and identifying anomalous geologic conditions ahead of the face as the tunnel was advanced. The Lake Huron Tunnel is an 18.5 foot diameter machine bored tunnel having a total length of approximately 6 miles. The easternmost 4.5 mile section of the tunnel extends offshore beneath Lake Huron. At the time this study was started, approximately 1.5 miles of bore remained to be completed at the east end of the project. The tunnel is part of a raw water intake for the City of Detroit water supply. The Lake Huron Tunnel is bored in Antrim shale, a dense marine shale of Mississippian or Devonian age. The west end of the project encountered banded brown shale containing numerous calcareous concretions ranging in size from a few inches to more than 16 feet in diameter. As the tunnel was advanced in an easterly direction, a transition was encountered into very uniform gray shale. One set of prominent vertical joints was encountered with a strike running approximately 15 to 20 degrees askew of the tunnel axis. Bedding is essentially flat. Variable quantities of salt water and natural gas occur in the rock. The results of exploratory drilling carried out for preliminary design studies indicated that as little as 30 to 35 feet of rock cover could be expected under the lake at the east end of the project.

Underground mining has yet to see an industry wide solution for control of their ventilation systems due to the complexity and sensitivity of the underground environment. Complexity arises from multi-level, multi-zone operations and sensitivity is associated with the impact that changes in equipment status and output have on air flows and quality throughout the mine. Our approach to solving this challenge incorporates system modeling and industrial control systems in a unified architecture. Although this approach can be applied to other processes and industries, this paper will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of an integrated model-control system (MCS) as it applies to underground mining ventilation.

INTRODUCTION The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) serves unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, parts of the cities of Sacramento and Folsom, and the cities of Citrus Heights, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove. SRCSD maintains 145 kilometers (km) (90 miles) of interceptors that convey a combined total of 0.6 million meters3 per day (160 million gallons per day) or more of waste-water, with additional miles of sewer interceptors that are scheduled to be built by 2020. Wastewater is conveyed to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in the southwestern portion of the County, also managed and operated by SRCSD, in interceptors with diameters as large as 3.0 m (120 inches.) As part of its overall expansion program, SRCSD has constructed a number of major interceptors over the last few years with tunneling methods due to concerns associated with either the impacts of open cut construction in an urban environment (traffic, safety, noise, environmental concerns) or the need to achieve a crossing of a stream, river, or transportation corridor. This paper focuses on a specific issue that affected construction of the Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) Sections 3&4 project, located at the northern limit of the SRCSD service boundary and within the limits of the City of Sacramento. This project involved the construction of 3.2 km (2 miles) of 2.1-meter (84-inch) and 2.4 km (1.5 miles) of 1.7-meter (66-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) using MTBM, EPBM, and 3.3-meter (130-inch) two-pass TBM methods. The owner elected to install the RCP using tunneling for a number of reasons including a desire to avoid traffic impacts in a dense urban corridor, to minimize disturbance to the neighborhood, and to avoid potential dewatering-induced settlement issues along the western one-third of the project. For the western portion of the alignment the 2.1-meter (84-inch) reinforced concrete interceptor pipe was to be installed using a 2.7-meter (105-inch) earth pressure balance machine (EPBM). No external dewatering of shafts or tunnels was permitted for reasons of concern about settlement, discussed previously. At the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Natomas Boulevard (at the extreme northwest corner of the project) the 2.7-meter (105-inch) EPBM tunneled past a recently constructed 11-million liter (3-million gallon) water storage reservoir, passing within 3 meters (10 feet) of the tank?s shallow foundation while tunneling through clean sands with a shallow groundwater table. The paper will discuss the implemented solution to mitigate additional settlement risk that was developed as a joint collaboration between the owner, CM, designer, and contractor.
