The Murray Mine was one of the first mechanized cut-and-fill underground gold operations in northern Nevada. At the end of 2002, mine production began to decline. So the mine entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary in previously condemned areas and in challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable, new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed the Murray Mine to remain in operation.

Cortez Gold Mines completed a feasibility study for a new openpit gold mine in north central Nevada. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing openpit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

Mine operation managers are constantly tasked with identifying new ways to produce more, while using less. Mine effectiveness and reliability is the foundation of improving operational performance. Timely decisions need to be made in order to identify production waste. Intelligent data needs to be visualized in real-time. Operational events need to be captured with impacts quantified and root causes identified. Unfortunately, complex information technology solutions often have a very poor success rate, with some reports suggesting 30 percent of complex projects are canceled before completion.

According to the classification of water conservation mining in shallow coal seams in China, when the ratio of the impermeable layer thickness to the mining height is less than 18, the mining belongs to the category of special water conservation, and the strip backfilling mining method is employed. This study is based on the geological conditions in northern Shaanxi. By analyzing the stability of the impermeable layer, the stability criterion of the impermeable layer was developed. The study also investigated the compositions and properties of the backfilling materials. The results show that reasonable subsidence of the impermeable layer is allowed during mining under the basic precondition (upward cracks and downward cracks are not connected).

This paper describes the field application of the NTH fracture classification to rock encountered in the construction of the 9.6 km long, 10m diameter, Second Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel. Excavation of the tunnel was undertaken by TBM between 1997 and 2002, in gneisses, granitic and diorite rocks. The paper outlines an adaptation of the NTH fracture classification used during the geological logging of this tunnel. The NTH fracture classification was primarily applied to assess discontinuity spacing for tunnel support requirement decision-making. The paper includes some general comparison of NTH classes with overall penetration rate.

This paper will discuss the process for making lightweight aggregate, the waste materials that make good lightweight aggregate, the chemistry of making lightweight aggregate and finally a discussion of the commercial prospects for making lightweight aggregate from wastes. Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last ten years. Many clay-like materials, such as coal-fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce a commercially saleable LWA.

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, NV began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corp. (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) to make room for the next phase of openpit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket. RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17-m- (56-ft-) high mechanically-stabilized embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, CO. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design and construction of the MSE wall.

A large underground cavern with dimensions of 25m × 175m × 49m (W×L×H) was excavated in sandstone and siltstone to house 4 units of hydropower generator and was completed in 2000. In feasibility study stage, the property of the siltstone which governs the ceiling of the cavern was questionable due to slaking phenomenon. Parameters on rock properties for design were back calculated from actual ground response measured from a trial excavation. For safety of construction, comparison between prediction and actual ground responses during excavation had proceeded. The prediction was provided by means of PHASES and PHASE2 software and the actual rock response was detected by the provided monitoring system.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is designing the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California. The project includes 6.9 km (4.3 miles) of twin-bored tunnels to be constructed through downtown San Jose using two earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs). This paper begins with a project description and update of the project status followed by a description of the relationship between anticipated ground conditions and EPBM requirements. Topics addressed include soil conditioning, abrasion resistance, annulus grouting, face pressure estimation, additional pressure control devices and control measures to limit over-excavation and settlement.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. The ability of computers to create synthetic representations of the real world in virtual reality offers a number of opportunities to enhance training methods used in the mining industry. Unfortunately, the training effectiveness of virtual reality systems currently used in the mining industry has received only limited testing. Miner Simulation (MinerSIM), an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts in a virtual mine environment is in its evaluation process at the University of Missouri-Rolla Experimental Mine. This paper discusses evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system, which consists of experimental and control groups with control students learning via traditional lecture and text formats. Preliminary results from usability tests of the first part of MinerSim, which is an online tutorial on underground rock bolting, are presented.

Interaction forces between a hydrophilic silica particle and an air bubble were measured by atomic force microscopy using simplified model systems with deionized water and dilute KCl solutions. Contributions from the hydrodynamic force were minimized by using a low piezo speed. Particle-bubble separation distance and the bubble spring constant were calculated from linear regression of the piezo extension versus cantilever deflection. The bubble surface potential was then estimated from fitting the AFM-measured forces to the Hogg-Healy-Fuerstenau (HHF) model, using the surface element integration (SEI) method. Surface potentials obtained for the bubble at a low applied force were comparable with the literature data, suggesting that the simplified model used here can give a reasonable estimation of the bubble surface potential under moderate applied forces. Interaction forces between a silica particle and an air bubble were also measured at different locations on the air bubble surface. The force curves obtained at the edges of the bubble fitted very well to the theoretical force curves regardless of the applied force, while curves obtained at the center and halfway to the center, were more difficult to fit, in particular at higher applied forces (> 13 nN), suggesting that force curves obtained at the edges of the air bubble might be less prone to deformation effects.

Mejel valley zircon ore in Iran is located in north part of Iran and was sampled to evaluate its concentration. The aim of this project was to define the mineralogy of this zone and separating zircon from other minerals using gravity concentrators and magnetic separators. It is constituted of various valuable minerals, mainly zirconium, niobium-tantalum, titanium, rare earth elements particularly cerium-bearing minerals namely zircon, sphene and rare earth elements oxides. We used statistical method for designing of experiments. Yates method used for analysis of basic experiments results. The grade of zircon in primary sample was 1.1%. Different experiments were designed to optimize all required parameters. The final concentration with 75% zircon was produced and final recovery was 79%. Finally, lab-scale based flow sheet was prepared using experiments results.

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

In the world of tunneling the glamour is in the large diameter, long tunnels, but perhaps the number of projects for small diameter and short length tunnels are greater and generally have higher risk factors. Reasons for these higher risks include both the ?boiler plate? contract provisions used on these types of contracts, the technical specifications related to the tunnel work (versus the pipeline construction), the bid practices including measurement and payment and the construction. This paper reviews and comments on some of the key issues the authors have observed in recent major pipe-line projects that involve a small percentage of tunneling footage of the total contract.

INTRODUCTION The state-of-the art in the area of soil-structure interaction is not sufficiently developed that one can accurately predict the earth load distribution on buried structures. This lack of knowledge has led to the use of high factors of safety in their design and conservative assumptions for the loading diagrams. As a step towards the improvement of the design methodology for buried structures, it is important to be able to apply new analytical techniques and monitor the performance data obtained on full-size buried structures. The performance data should preferably include: 1) the actual stress distribution on the buried structure, 2) stress distribution in the buried structure and surrounding soil media, 3) vertical and lateral movements in the soil adjacent to the buried structure, and 4) deflection of the buried structure. Brown (1967), Davis (1972), Krizek, et al (1974), Krizek and MacQuade (1978), and some few others have compared the performance of full-size culverts with finite element results. Despite all these efforts, a complete understanding of the soil-structure interaction problem has not yet been fully achieved. In an effort to make improvements in the existing design procedures for buried structures constructed in an open-cut, the Department of Environmental Services (DES), Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Howard University, undertook a detailed study of Section II of the Capitol Hill Relief Sewer (CHRS). Inclinometers were used to measure lateral movements of the excavation wall and the total normal interface stresses acting on the concrete sewer were obtained using glotzl total pressure cells. This paper describes the results of the field instrumentation program for acquisition of data, their comparison with the design assumptions, and the results of a series of post-construction finite element analyses of the CHRS project.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering (pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled “A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, Resources, and Reserves” in January 1992. Work continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. Working Party No. 79 was then renamed the SME Committee on Resources and Reserves and became a standing committee.
