The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1956 was made under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 120 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1956 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 17 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

The patterns of variation of the 21 anisotropic elastic constants with direction arc presented for all of the symmetry systems that are normally expected to occur in rocks and in the constituent minerals. The exception, which is not discussed, is the triclinic system for which no elastic constants are available. Variations are shown for rotations about the principal axes by means of polar graphs. These include graphs for all of the n-fold symmetry axes possible for elastic symmetry and thus make it possible to visualize variational patterns for rotations about any n-fold axis. Variations throughout space are shown by means of equal area projections for the only constants (those relating axial stress to axial strain) that are uniquely defined by a single closed surface. For those unfamiliar with the compliance (Sij) and stiffness (cij) coefficients, the variations that can be shown by Young's modulus (E), Poisson's ratio (v), and shear modulus (G) are also given.

Sales of diesel fuel in the United States exceeded 150,000,000 barrels during 1953 and 140,000,000 barrels during 1952. Following are some figures on the distribution of this fuel computed from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ [ ] Deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries totaled 91,170,000 barrels during the first six months of 1954, 3/ a corresponding figure for 1953 was 86,284,000 barrels.

During early development of the blast furnace, Connellsville coke made entirely from Pittsburgh-bed coal proved to be an excellent fuel. The need for blending coking coals arose as the industry grew and it became necessary to carbonize coals having voking properties inferior to those of Pittsburgh coal Most coals carbonized today in continental Europe and this country are blonded: This practise has improved the quality of coke and permitted the utilization of coals that would yield inferior coke, if carbonized sepa- rately, The depletion of the world's better coking coals, which has been noted by leading coal technologists,2/4/wes accelerated during the recent war and. It is important, therefore, that reserves be evaluated and conserved. In the principal, steel-producing sections of this country, Pocahontas coals have been blended so extensively that the terms "low-volatile coking coal": and. "Pocahontas" have become virtually synonymous. Other low-volatile coals. have been used to manufacture metallurgical coke and will be used more extensively as, the supply of the better known and more accessible Pocahontas coals decreases. Recognizing the need for augmenting the supply of high-rank coking coals, the Bureau of Mines has included both low- and medium-volatile coals in its Survey of the Carbonizing Properties of American Coals, which was started with the cooperation of the American Gas Association in 1929. Twenty coals, 12 of low-volatile and 8 of medium-volatile rank, have been blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh-bed coal, and five standard low- volatile coals have been blended with various high-volatile coals. "INTRODUCTION The Cahaba coal field is the second largest coal—producing area in Alabama. This field underlies parts of Shelby, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Bibb Counties and has an area of about 270 square miles. The Cahaba formations contain a number of coal beds, about 8 of which are mined at present. Although the area contains many folds and faults, samples from various mines and beds indicate that, except for the variation in ash content, the coal from this field is very uniform in character and quality. It is a high-volatile bituminous coal used chiefly for steam-raising purposes and domestic fuel. The coal as mined usually contains too high a percentage of impurities to be marketed without some preparation. The majority of the mines have washing plants in which jigs are the favorite type of equipment, although at some mines tables are used for cleaning the slack sizes. The washing characteristics of the coal from the Cahaba field are very uniform and differ from those of the near-by Warrior field, in that the coarser sizes contain a much lower percentage of bony material than the finer sizes. In general, the bone increases with decrease in size. It breaks into thin flakes, making difficult its elimination in the cleaning process, and gives rise to what is known among the washery operators of the Cahaba field as the ""rash problem.""A previous publication 5 referred to rash from the standpoint of jig operation and suggested some means of handling it with jigs. This report presents the results of table tests on two samples of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock beds, respectively, of the Cahaba field to determine the influence of rash on table efficiency.This investigation has been made in connection with the study of coal-washing problems now being conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators of Alabama."

The performance of four sand cones was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in three preparation plants that utilized cones in various flow schemes. The cone at plant A was a simple two-product one that provided clean coal and refuse. Plant B had two cones; one cone made a primary separation and the other a secondary separation. The primary cone separated salable coal from heavy rejects. The secondary cone separated a low-ash metallurgical coal and an intermediate-ash product suitable for plant fuel or steam markets. In plant C the sand cone was equipped with a middlings draw Which continually removed an intermediate specific-gravity product below the surface of the cone. The three primary separations of raw coal effected between floats and sinks were excellent. The recovery efficiencies for the plus 1/4-inch material ranged from 99.8 to 97.6 percent, the error areas ranged from 19 to 23 square centimeters, and the probable errors in specific gravity ranged from 0.033 to 0.024. The performance data of the two secondary separations varied from excellent in plant B, where the separation was on a par with the primary separations, to somewhat inferior in plant C, where the secondary separation was effected at the middlings draw.

Shortly after the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 we passed by Congress, the Bureau of Mines was authorized to begin a program of investigation of domestic sources of strategic minerals. Since World War I, the Philipsburg district had been virtually the only one in the United States that was producing manganese on a commercial scale. Consequently, the district was among the first to he investigated. During the summer of 1939, the Geological Survey mapped the geology and ore deposits of the district. In late July 1939 the writer examined the district for the Bureau of Mines. On the basis of this examination and of the work performed by the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled at several properties in the district during the summer of 1940. This report reviews the mining history and geology of the district, and presents the factual data obtained by diamond drilling.

The Bureau of Mines studied the influence of carbonization method, temperature, and carrier gas on the composition of eight different low-temperature tars produced from a Colorado subbituminous coal. A fluidized bed was compared with an entrained bed, temperature was varied from 500° C to 650° C, and external heating using recycle gas as the carrier gas was compared with internal heating using oxygen-containing gas. The entrained bed yielded significantly more m-cresol and m-ethylphenol, indicating that thermodynamic equilibrium was more nearly approached in the system. Increasing the temperature greatly increased the yield of benzenes and naphthalenes, while paraffins, olefins, and total tar acids were reduced. Using oxygen in the carrier gas decreased the yield of low-boiling phenols and increased that of paraffins and olefins at 650° C.

A comparative review of roof fall fatalities for extended and nonextended cut mining is included. Current ground control guidelines for extended cut approval are summarized. The problems and concerns of this extraction system are addressed, and typical extended cutting face operations are described.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite, the only common mineral and ore of molybdenum, occurs wide¬-spread but is concentrated as the main ore mineral in commercial quantities in only a few known deposits. Consequently, the Government sought additional sources of the minerals as a precaution against the possible shortage of moylbdenm for war uses. Upon request by the War Production Board, the New Year’s Eve and Esperanza properties of the Amargosa Molybdenum & Copper Corp. were investigated by the Geological Survey 3/ and the bureau of Mines 4/. The Survey appraised the mineral potentialities of the deposit and prepared topographic and geologic maps, and the Bureau made a preliminary engineering examination. The deposits were previously examined by W. J. Vanderwilt, consulting engineer. It was largely due to his recommendations that interest was stimulated in the deposits.Development on the New Year’s Eve deposit indicated a small tonnage of sub marginal ore. There was little development at the Esperanza, but surface examination revealed a large volume of rock containing a little molybdenite and a trace of copper in the oxidized outcrops. Some molybdic oxide was noted suggesting that some molybdenite might have been leached from the oxidized outcrops and that the molybdenite content in the sulfide zone might be higher."

The use of Diesel fuel continues to increase. In the United States during 1951 over 120,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel oil were sold. The railroads used approximately 43.5 percent of this volume; industries such as smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 12 percent; trucks, busses, tractors and bulldozers 20 percent; water craft 14.5 percent; and the remaining 10 percent was consumed by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Complete data for 1952 are not yet available, but it is known that by December 1952 over 13 3/4 million barrels of Diesel fuel per month were produced by the country's refineries and by April 1953 the monthly production had increased to 1 4,333,000 barrels.3/ Information on the properties of this type of engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

Over 80 pct of domestic phosphate rock, which is the starting material for phosphorus-containing fertilizers, comes from central Florida deposits. As K-her grade deposits are depleted, lower grade phosphate ores containing 'Mg0 in the form of dolomite are encountered. Treating high MgO ores with present beneficiation technology will not yield a concentrate meeting specifications for acidulation. The Bureau of Mines conducted research on three high-MgO phosphate samples from south Florida. The sales contained, in percent, 5.4 to 10.2 P205, 1.9 to 7.6 MgO, and 35.3 to 60.1 acid insolubles. A technique of sizing, grinding, desliming, scrubbing, and redesliming was used to produce a feed suitable for continuous flotation studies, A conventional fatty acid-fuel oil rougher flotation followed by two to three cleaner stages resulted in concentrates containing, in percent, 30.7 to 31.3 P205, 0.6 to 1.3 MgO, and 2.5 to 4.8 acid insolubles. The P205 recovery from the flotation feed ranged from 55.1 to 89.7 pct.

[A cost/benefit analysis was conducted by comparing the industry cost to protective structures on low-coal face equipment with the benefits paid for injuries/fatalities considered preventable by the use of these structures. Th industry costs were based on estimates by OEM's and rebuild shops for install protective structures on new and rebuilt face equipment. The accident benefit was based on evaluations performed by the USBM Accident Cost Indicator Model. Industry wide population data were developed on low-coal face equipment and injuries/ fatalities preventable with protective structures. The results of the analysis are to be used as a tool by USBM in determining the feasibility of continuing development of cab and canopy technology for low-coal equipment.]
