[The rapid expansion of the petroleum industry, the steadily growing use of oil fuel or steamships, the increasing transportation of oil in tankers and the extensive use of petroleum oils for many land industries, has resulted in pollution of our coastal eaters by these oils. On account of the great importance of this problem to the petroleum and shipping industries its, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute and -he American Steamship Owners Association has undertaken to ascertain the extend of petroleum oil pollution along the coasts of the United States and to indicated the principal so arcs of such pollution. Certain typical methods and devices in use and proposed for the separation of oil from water, and for the disposal of oily castes from ships and industrial plants have been studied. An attempt has also been made to point out the nature of the fire hazard resulting from oil pollution and to indicate the effect of such pollution on bathing beaches.]

Test equipment that simulated frictional impacts between coal-cutter bits and mineral inclusions at a coal face during operation of a continuous coal mining machine was used by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory to study the incendivity of impacts between various rocks, metals, and hard-metal alloys in an explosive mixture of air-7 pct natural gas. Quartzitic sandstone was found to be the most incendive of several rocks tested. Limestone concretions from a coal seam, known locally as "sulfur balls," sparked furiously but were not incendive. Among the metals tested, the type of steel used in commercial coal-cutter tools was the most incendive material tested. A l7-4PH stainless steel was less incendive and appears to be the most promising high-strength steel alloy, reasonably economical, for use in coal-cutter bits. Some hard-metal alloys, primarily titanium and zirconium diboride composites, were also evaluated as possible replacements for the conventional cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide used in the tip of coal-cutter bits. The metal-bonded diborides were generally less inc endive but more brittle than the conventional tungsten carbide. Carbonitride coatings on tool bits were also tested but found to have no advantage. The source of ignition during frictional impact between metal and rock was studied. Immediately after impact, a yellow flash was observed and a smear of metal near its melting point occurred on the rock. This hotspot on the rock, rather than the yellow flash or sparks or metal fragments, was observed to be the cause of the ignition.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of barite (BaSO4) from 35 U.S. and 41 non-U.S. mines and deposits in 17 market economy countries (MEC's). This evaluation assesses the availability of mud-grade barite, and concentrates consumed by the chemicals and fillers industries. The demonstrated resources defined in this analysis totaled 130 million metric tons (Mmt) of barite (contained BaSO4), yielding a potential 115 Mmt of recoverable barite concentrates. At the 1984 MEC production rate, the evaluated resources would last about 30 yr; however, this would include production costs of up to $100/mt concentrate. An average price needed to cover all costs of production over the life of each operation was determined for both mud-grade and chemical- and filler-grade barite products. Including a 0-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), regional weighted- average total production cost ranged from $38/mt for barite concentrates in Asia to $71/mt for U.S. operations. Transportation costs have the greatest impact, contributing up to 60 pct of the total cost of production. Rail transportation costs from the mines to U.S. markets are generally significantly higher than ocean shipping rates on imports.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

As part of its mission to assure an adequate domestic supply of metals essential to the Nation's welfare, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated a particle agglomeration technique as a means for improving the flow of leaching solution through heaps of clayey or finely crushed, low-grade, gold-silver ores. Bench-and pilot-scale experiments showed that the percolation rate of cyanide leaching solution was markedly enhanced by mixing the ore with a portland cement binder, moistening the mixture, and mechanically agglomerating and aging the feed prior to heap building and leaching. The rate of gold and silver recovery markedly increased because of the increased, uniform percolation of leaching solution through the agglomerated feed. The use of concentrated cyanide solution instead of water during the agglomeration procedure decreased the leaching time required to obtain maximum recovery. Results of bench-and pilot-scale experiments are discussed.

In connection with its researches on the crude petroleums of the United States, the Bureau of Mines has made a particular study of apparatus for the distillation of hydrocarbon mixtures. While this study is still incomplete it has already resulted in the development of considerable laboratory and semi-plant equipment, motet of which has been described in various publications of the Bureau. The laboratory apparatus (Hempel distillation) and method gives satisfactory comparative results in the laboratory examination of crudes and have been found applicable to crudes of all types, but the agreement of laboratory and plant distillations is not as close as might be desired. This is due, in part, to limitations in size and construction of the laboratory apparatus. Some refiners claim that the Bureau of Mines' laboratory method (Hempel distillation3) for distilling crude petroleum, does not show the full gasoline content of the oil, while others have stated that it indicates more gasoline than can be obtained from the crude commercially. This difference of opinion among refiners results largely from the great variation in stills used and methods of operating them. The Bureau's experience has shown that crude oils from different fields vary widely in character; in fact, that it is not yet possible to classify crude's adequately on the basis of their Down chemical and physical characteristics. As a result of the differences that exist among crudes, and of the difficulty of designing refinery equipment, no standard practice has yet been adopted for the commercial distillation of petroleum, and ma" types of stills are used in the refineries of this country. The occurrence of dusts in underground workings creates many difficult and, in some instances, contradictory and conflicting problems for workers, operators, and all others interested in health and safety in mining and tunneling. Moreover, there are many misconceptions both as to the actual effect of most dusts which may be encountered in underground work and as to remedial or alleviating measures. Although the harmfulness of mine dusts to health of miners has been mentioned by man; writers in ancient times, much of our really authentic knowledge of the effect of underground dusts upon health or safety in both coal and metal mines has been pained during the past 30 or 35 years. There has been, however, a considerable amount of generalizing from some local condition or occurrence or theory rather than arriving at conclusions after extended studies and observations made not only in mines and tunnels but also in town, camps, and plants, and comprising date on as many different mining and tunneling localities, conditions, etc., as could be secured with reasonable expenditure of time or money. This paper dives sortie observations based on the writer's 30 odd years of experience in and around both coal and metal mines, including approximately 20 years? close study of dust disease with detailed surveys and reports on dust occurrence and effects in considerably more than 100 mines in probably 20 States of the Union. The observatio are those of an engineer and in many respects conflict the with "going" ideas of doctors, pathologists, and others who have written on dust disease. Although these particles are usually dry, they may be wet; in general, their dimensions are so small as to be invisible to the nailed eye. Dusts in coal mines which may be involved in the initiation or extension of explosions, are generally thought to be those which are smaller than 20-mesh in size but chiefly finer than 20-mesh; coal-mine dusts which are harmful to health of workers have essentially the same general physical characteristics as other dusts, but usually consist of smaller particles.

Research conducted by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of preparing columbium and tantalum metals by the application of Kroll-process techniques. Yields in excess of 95 percent were obtained in a modified Kroll-process reduction apparatus constructed from nickel and Inconel.4 Operating conditions during reduction and distillation were determined. Optimum temperatures during sodium reductions ranged from 650° to 750° C and for magnesium from 700° to 800° C with retort pressures ranging from 3 to 7 psig. Undesirable vapor phase reactions occurred when temperatures exceeded 750° C during sodium reductions or 850° C with magnesium. Vacuum distillation at 850° C effectively removed volatile salts and excess reductant from the reduced metals. Calculations based on the results obtained in small scale tests indicate that reaction rates of up to 34 lb/hr could be obtained during columbium reductions and up to 60 lb/hr during tantalum reductions in production scale reac¬tors. The small, laboratory-scale techniques used in this study could be adapted to commercial practice. The reduced powder or sponge metals can be consolidated by conventional arc-melting techniques, and the arc-melted metals can be fabricated into ductile sheet at room temperature. Analyses of arc-melted buttons prepared from Kroll-process tantalum or columbium showed that tantalum of greater than 99.8-percent purity was obtained and that columbium purity exceeded 99.7 percent. A significant purification of the reduced metals occurred when they were consolidated by electron-beam melting, and the purity and ductility of electron-beam-melted Kroll-process tantalum and columbium compared favorably with the commercial metals. After electron-beam melting, the purity of the tantalum exceeded 99.95 percent, and columbium purity was approximately 99.9 percent.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. To help mine safety and health professionals manage and reduce hazardous noise exposure with a software tool that simplifies the record-keeping and analysis process. Background Hearing loss resulting from overexposure to noise continues to be a problem throughout the U.S. mining industry. Studies indicate that 70%?90% of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss severe enough to be classified as a hearing disability by the time they reach retirement age. To address this problem, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software program. DOSES is designed specifically for use by mine management and safety personnel to simplify the record-keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies, making it easier to identify and solve noise exposure problems.

The objective is to provide effective training on refuge chambers for underground coal miners. This training will increase knowledge about how to teach miners to operate, transport, and inspect a refuge chamber; what to expect psychologically and physiologically inside a refuge chamber; and how to decide when to use a refuge chamber. Background During 2006?2007, several disasters occurred at U.S. underground coal mines, resulting in 28 fatalities. These disasters led to new approaches to mine safety and health, as well as new federal regulations. One new technology mandated by federal legislation is the refuge chamber. Refuge chambers are movable shelters that are either made of steel or inflate from a steel skid as a tent. They can potentially save the lives of miners during an underground mine emergency by providing breathable air, food, water, and a safe environment for up to 96 hours. Because the refuge chamber is a new technology, recommendations, information, and training products are greatly needed.

The pressure pulse generated by an underwater spark \vas investigated in relation to its potential use for rock fragmentation. The study established (1) the relation between the peak discharge current and the peak wave pressure; (2) the relationships among the peak wave pressure, the discharge voltage, and the spark gap width; (3) the type and pulse duration of the generated wave; (4) the percentage of energy transmitted in the spark as a function of spark gap width and discharge voltage; and (5) the percentage of energy converted into the pressure wave as a function of gap width and discharge voltage. Spark-generated fractures were studied in two-and three-dimensional rock and plastic specimens. The laboratory results indicated that the pressure pulse generated by an underwater spark is a potential practical tool for rock fragmentation. The paper contains an appendix describing the capacitive pressure gage specially developed for the laboratory tests.

The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Exhaust emissions were measured from 25 aircraft turbine engines using Jet A fuel. Analytical apparatus, procedures, and results are described. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aldehydes were measured at engine operating modes representing power levels used in airline operation. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions were highest at idle and lowest at takeoff; oxides of nitrogen were lowest at idle and highest at takeoff. Of the total oxides of nitrogen emitted, nitrogen dioxide constituted from 10 to 100 pct, depending on the exhaust gas temperature. Engines retrofitted with smoke-reducing burner cans produced less carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions, and slightly more oxides of nitrogen then engines with standard burner cans.

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for re- generating chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching solutions used in metal surface treatment operations. The technique utilizes a diaphragm cell equipped with a cation-selective membrane to oxidize cr3+ to cr6+ at the anode and to remove copper, the major metallic contaminant, at the cathode. Normally, spent etchant is discarded after approximately 3 days of use. Using the electrolytic cell, the etchant can be used for a year without replacement, From data obtained from industrial-scale cells, the installation of a regeneration cell with a 1,000-gal catholyte- holding tank has been estimated to save at least $240 per day, The payback period for the investment is estimated to be about 10 mo or less. Because the magnitude of these cost savings will vary at different locations, several graphs are presented to aid in calculating payback for a specific site. Using these graphs and the capital costs presented in this study, the payback period can be determined for installing a regeneration cell with a 500- or a 1,000-gal catholyte-holding tank in an existing surface treatment plant.

To minimize the equipment operator?s respirable dust exposure in enclosed cabs of mobile equipment by install-ing cab filtration and pressurization systems and by keep-ing doors and windows closed. Background Enclosed cabs are used on mobile equipment to protect operators from health and safety hazards. The primary health concern is overexposure to respirable dust. Examples of such equipment in mining include drills, dozers, haul trucks, and other equipment. When equipment is new, the operator?s dust exposure is normally at acceptable levels. As the equipment ages and gaskets and seals deteriorate, the air quality inside an enclosed cab can reach a point where it is no longer at acceptable levels for the equipment operators. In an effort to improve the air quality in enclosed cabs of older mining equipment, NIOSH has been performing research to retrofit cabs with new filtration and pressurization systems. Over the past few years, this research has shown that retrofit systems can substantially improve the cab?s air quality back to safe and acceptable levels. How-ever, this is only possible when a positive cab pressure is achieved and maintained. Thus, when a cab door or window is opened, the cab pressure drops to zero and the cab filtration and pressurization system is rendered ineffective. During a recent field study, the magnitude of this impact was noted when a drill operator repeatedly opened the cab door throughout the course of the drill cycle. Upon closer examination, it was determined that the cab door was being opened to manually guide the next drill steel into place each time an additional section of steel was needed to drill deeper holes.

"The relationship between exposure to coal mine dust and the development of various respiratory diseases is well recognized. The cause of these diseases however. Is still uncertain. To study this cause-effect relationship, It Is necessary to characterize the coal mine dust In terms of the quantity of dust present and mineral content of the dust. Dust samples were collected using a Portable Continuous Aerosol Monitor (PCAM) and 4-stage cassette Impactors at various locations in an upper Freeport seam coal mine In West Virginia. The samples were analyzed using an X-ray microdiffraction film technique and energy dispersive scanning electron microscopy. This paper presents the results of the first phase of this characterization work which Includes determining the size distribution of the dust and the mineral content of the size intervals.IntroductionDiseases associated with dusts in coal mine environments continue to afflict miners in today's modem mines. These diseases still persist because, as Olishifski points out an employee rarely experiences exposures to a single environmental stress but rather to an Intricate Interplay of multiple stresses.(1) In the case of coal mining the multiple stresses are varying sizes of dust particles originating from coal imbedded minerals. Immediate roof strata bottom strata. Incombustible rock and the coal itself. The site of this Intricate Interplay Is the miner's lungs and the resulting diseases are a function of the composite dust exposures.The proper study of coal mine dust toxicity requires that the dusts used replicate existing coal and mineral dust compositions in their relevant size fractions. The purpose of this project is to develop the size and mineral content data necessary to support this ongoing toxicological effort.Existing coal mining standards and regulations also address total and respirable dust exposures. These dust terms refer to both the quality and quantity of the dust segment in the mine atmosphere. Dust quality addresses its coal and mineral content. whereas dust quantity Is described by mass per unit volume (mg/m3) The comprehensive characterization of coal mine dust exposures will enable revision of these standards and regulations to address the specific minerals and size fractions found to be toxic to human lung tissue."

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"
